Geothermal Systems Can Carry Tax Credits (NAPS)—Tax credits for geo­ thermal heat pumps are a hot item. According to WaterFurnace, a leading manufacturer of geothermal systems, in many cases, homeowners qualify for a federal tax credit for installing their products. Some homeowners may also qualify for additional utility and state rebates, which can make installing such systems even more affordable. Thanks to these incentives, a homeowner can save money when installing a geothermal system and continue to experience savings for years since such a system operates more efficiently and economically than traditional furnaces, air source heat pumps or air conditioners. Some states are also beginning to acknowledge that geothermal systems offer as much benefit when it comes to clean energy generation as wind and solar technology. In fact, the state of Maryland has enacted legislation that allows a utility to claim a renewable energy credit for installing a geothermal heat pump. Stored Solar Energy In general, geothermal heat pumps take advantage of free solar energy stored just below the surface of the earth. Using a series of pipes buried in the ground, the system extracts thermal energy, concentrates it, and distributes it throughout the home using traditional ductwork or radiant floor heating. The most efficient geothermal heat pump systems can deliver over five dollars of heating for every dollar of electrical energy it uses. That translates into reductions in heating and cooling bills by as much as 70 percent. The system reverses to cool a structure. In that mode, it extracts heat from indoor air and either moves it back into the earth or into a water tank for domestic hot water. Additional Savings Geothermal systems, such as those produced by WaterFurnace, tend to produce more energy per square foot than solar systems while taking up less space. In addition, the majority of geothermal manufacturers offer equipment that can provide hot water to the home. Unlike solar solutions, these geothermal systems provide hot water around the clock, heating it at three to five times the efficiency of traditional gas or electic heaters. The Next Step In Heat Pump Technology (NAPS)—There’s good news for homeowners looking for more efficient and economical ways to heat and cool their home. The next generation in geothermal technology has arrived. These systems are designed to leverage underground thermal energy to provide ultra efficient heating and cooling of a home. That’s the word from experts at WaterFurnace who say that new variable capacity geothermal technologies are more than twice as efficient as any air source heat pumps or air conditioner and a third more efficient than existing geothermal systems. Less Wasted Energy Compressors in conventional heat pumps typically run at only one or two speeds. About 90 percent of the time, a fixedspeed compressor cycles on and off or uses some other energywasting technique to throttle back capacity. A Constant Temperature Imagine that your car had only two choices: 30 mph and 70 mph. Similarly, a variable speed compressor uses low capacities and just a small amount of energy to constantly maintain building temperatures.

This can translate to savings, since variable speed compressors cut energy consumption by varying compressor capacity to match exact cooling and heating needs. With no cycling on and off, there is less wasted energy ramping back up to capacity. This allows the system to run more often at very low capacities, keeping a building at a stable, constant temperature and improving energy efficiency. To change speed, the compressor uses an external variable frequency drive (VFD)—also known as an inverter—to slow or speed up the alternating current (AC) electric motor that drives the rotating elements inside the scroll compressor. Efficient Operation Using the earth as a natural energy source, a geothermal system can operate more efficiently than ordinary heating and air-conditioning systems, delivering five units of energy for every one unit of electrical energy used—a 500 percent efficiency rating. That means a geo­thermal system can provide a precise distribution of comfortable air all year long, eliminating hot and cold spots throughout the home while operating quietly. Ten Tips To Help You Save Energy, Money And Time (NAPS)—Your energy bills will be less likely to get you hot under the collar if you heed a few hints from the experts at the U.S. Department of Energy. ​1. Install and set a programmable thermostat to save up to 10 percent on heating and cooling costs. 2. Use sunlight to your advantage. During the cold months, open your curtains during the day to let the sun shine in. During warmer months, use light-colored window shades or blinds to reflect heat back out. Using natural lighting can also reduce your need for artificial light. 3. Set your water heater to no higher than 120 degrees. Install low-flow showerheads or temperature-sensitive shower valves. 4. Choose energy-saving lighting. Compared to traditional incandescent bulbs, compact fluorescent bulbs yield as much as 75 percent energy savings and last six times longer. 5. Get an electronic power strip. Many chargers and other devices consume energy even when not in use. Plug them into the power strip and turn it off. 6. What’s more, that sort of thing seems to be on the upswing: According to Weather. com, four of the top five costliest hurricanes have occurred since 2005, while notes that six of the top 10 costliest wildfires have struck in the last 10 years. That’s why, if you’re considering a home building or remodeling project, it’s important to choose products that best protect that investment, including the siding. There are several materials you can consider, including: 1. Fiber cement, which consists of sand, cement and cellulose fiber 2. Masonry 3. Wood-based siding, including cedar and woodcomposite 4. Vinyl. Compared with vinyl or wood-based siding, fiber cement siding is better formulated to handle the rigors of both everyday and ex­treme weather. Consider this: • Fire: Fiber cement siding is noncombustible, so it doesn’t contribute any “fuel” to a fire. Conversely, vinyl siding melts and burns and wood-based siding burns. • Impact: Fiber cement siding resists impact from objects blown by a storm’s high winds much better than vinyl siding. • Flood: Fiber cement siding is a Class 5 floodresistant material according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency. This differs from wood-based siding, which is not moisture resistant and prone to rotting. Certain types of fiber cement siding go even further to protect your home. For example, James Hardie siding is engineered for the home’s specific climate. 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened ½ cup granulated sugar ½ cup light brown sugar, packed 2 large eggs 1 tablespoon heavy cream 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract 2 cups pastry-quality allpurpose gluten-free flour 1 teaspoon baking powder ¼ teaspoon kosher salt 15 maraschino cherries— stems removed, patted dry and chopped ½ cup shelled pistachios, chopped 6 ounces good-quality white chocolate chips

Preheat the oven to 350° F. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper or silicon baking mats. Cream the butter with the two sugars in a mixer. Beat A Branch of First Neodesha Bank in the eggs, one at a time, beating until each egg is fully incorporated. Add the cream and vanilla and mix well. Combine the flour, baking powder and salt in a mixing location inside Wal-Mart bowl and whisk together. Add to the butter and sugar mixture and beat just until combined. With a spatula, scrape the bottom and sides of the mixing bowl to make sure all ingredients are thoroughly combined. Add the chopped cherries, pistachios and white chocolate chips and fold in. Drop spoonfuls of the cook­ie dough onto the prepared baking sheets. Gently flatten the cookies. Bake for 10–12 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove bacon to paper towel–lined plate to cool; crumble. Remove all but 2 tablespoons of the bacon grease from skillet. Add butter to skillet with bacon grease.
