Acknowledgement Canadian Ramgarhia Society on September 7th, 2012 has completed a journey of 40 years. The Society began with 30 to 40 families, which had no community place of its own to call a home. Executive Committee generally rented community halls and school auditoriums for holding religious functions, social gatherings and general meetings. It was a great challenge for the Executive Committee through out those years to stay connected with the membership and grow as a Community. The Sikh heritage and willingness for community service kept the Society officials involved. They crossed all hurdles that came in their path. No doubt, these hurdles could have thrown them out of the track. The hard work and will to grow bonded them together and gave them the courage to fulfill the wishes that founding members had dreamed of. The journey started almost with limited resources and after completing 40 years, the society has assets worth millions of dollars and thousands of patrons benefiting from facilities provided through Gurdwara Sahib Brookside. It was unimaginable to construct a project of this size in 2004 when the land was purchased. Banks refused to fund the whole amount for the construction but promised to do so later on after the completion. Thanks to the generosity and dedication of some members, they never let the project stop for lack of funds. During construction almost three Million dollars were raised through debentures. The members gave funds for loan with open heart. Some of the loans were interest free and others bore some interest. Some of the member borrowed personal funds and lent it to the society. To lend the money without any security was commendable. In the General Meeting of December 10th, 2006 it was suggested to celebrate the 40th, Anniversary in 2012. It is indeed an honor to document important steps in the history of the Society and persons who imprinted them through the course of 40 years. Some of them have left us for heavenly abode but I am sure they would have been equally happy, as we are, to see today’s outcome. In preparing this pamphlet I have relied on Canadian Ramgarhia Society minute books, correspondence filed in Registrar’s Office in Victoria, personal notes and records kept for years. On behalf of Executive Committee of Canadian Ramgarhia Society, I would like to express my sincere thanks to those who worked hard, walked along, and moved the society forward and closer to its goal. On the 40th anniversary of the Society, we acknowledge those, who sow the seed, nourished it and watched it grow. Today, we enjoy its fruit. CANADIAN RAMGARHIA SOCIETY IMPORTANT STEPS AND SIGNIFICANT EVENTS OVER THE 40 YEARS SPAN 1970-71:
Surindar Singh Jabal (Public Relations 2012)
The Ramgarhia Bhaichara (brotherhood) met regularly as early as 1970 with the view of having a social network for family get-together and led later on forming a Ramgarhia society in Canada.
November 27th, 1971:
Ramgarhia Bhaichara chose the name of the society as “CANADIAN RAMGARHIA SOCIETY” and process of drafting the constitution was put in motion.
December 12th, 1971:
A provisional five-member committee of Harnam Singh Kalsi, Mota Singh Jheeta, Avtar Singh Sira, Harbhajan Singh Sehra, Jagbir Singh Matharu, and Narinder Singh Grewalson was appointed to call meetings, keep record and march forward for the goal of having a society.
April 9th, 1972:
Drafted constitution was adopted and the society’s name “CANADIAN RAMGARHIA SOCIETY” was reaffirmed and was further solemnized in the constitution through unalterable clause in future. After adopting constitution, the Executive Committee was elected as follows: Mota Singh Jheeta (president), Mohan Singh Bhamra (vicepresident), Harbhajan Singh Sehra (secretary), Harcharan Singh Kundan (vice secretary), Avtar Singh Sira (treasurer), Banta Singh Sabharwal (vice treasurer). Members of the Advisory committee were: Piara Singh Rehncy, Amar Singh Burgess, Harbhajan Singh Bhumrah, Pyara Singh Mudhar & Surinder Singh Nunrah.
September 7th, 1972:
Canadian Ramgarhia Society was duly registered and the Registrar of Companies in Victoria BC issued the Certificate of Incorporation No. 9876.
March 5th, 1975:
Canadian Ramgarhia Society wrote a letter to the Mayor of Surrey Vander Zalm regarding increased attacks of vandalism in the lower mainland especially in Surrey and asked for suitable steps be taken to stop them.
August 24th, 1975:
Canadian Ramgarhia Society on the advice of lawyer Reiner O. Rothe amended the constitution in a Special General Meeting for getting a charitable status for the society and members passed the motion in support of Mr. Avtar Singh Dhillon’s brief to “Compensation Board & Minister of Labor” for his fight against wearing hardhat and in support of accommodating turban on work place. 40th anniversary (1972-2012)

May 26th, 1976:
Society received the letter from Lawyer Reiner O. Rothe that Department of National Revnue, Taxtation needs more clarification on some of the clauses, some of the documents and further amending the Society’s Constitution to conform to the department’s guidelines.
August 1st, 1976:
Once again, the constitution was amended as per Lawyer’s advice to fulfill the Department of National Revenue requirements for attaining charitable status.
August 27th, 1976:
Canadian Ramgarhia Society was registered and was granted Canadian Charitable Organization status with Registration N.o. 0472910-27.
June 23rd, 1979:
Canadian Ramgarhia Society participated with its banner in the Nagar Kirtan held inVancouver celebrating Quincentenary of Sri Guru Amar Das Ji.
May 14th, 1980
Canadian Ramgarhia Society decided in the General Meeting that society is in favor of forming an umbrella organization known as “ Federation of Sikh Societies Canada”on national level.
May 16-17-18th, 1980
Canadian Ramgarhia Society (Surindar Singh Jabal) moved a motion in the Ottawa Sikh Convention to form an umbrella organization known as “Federation of Sikh Societies of Canada” on national level. Khalsa Diwan Society Vancouver duly seconded the motion.
April 15th, 1981
Canadian Ramgarhia Society bought property 7509-7525 Meadow Avenue, Burnaby BC. Held the Religious Ceremony with Arambh Akhand Path of July 25th and Bhog Akhand Path & Kirtan on July 27th, 1981.
Nov 4th, 1983:
The Executive Committee of Canadian Ramgarhia Society passed a resolution on Nov 2nd, 1983 to support Khalsa Diwan Society in its effort to have the Birhs (Guru Granth Sahib) removed from BC Courts and wrote letter to Honourable Brian R.D. Smith, Attorney General of BC in this regard and sent a copy to Khalsa Diwan Society.
May 16th, 1984:
Canadian Ramgarhia Society presented a brief on proposed Secondary School curriculum change to the Education Ministry in the meeting held at Killarney Secondary School in Vancouver. Canadian Ramgarhia Society strongly recommended the Education Ministry to include Punjabi (heritage language) as an elective subject in 40th anniversary (1972-2012)

Secondary School Curriculum and opposed streaming in high schools.
March 24th, 1985:
Canadian Ramgarhia Society purchased the property on 6908 McPherson Avenue in Burnaby and held first Shabad Kirtan Diwan on the premises.
March 27th, 1985:
Executive Committee of Canadian Ramgarhia Society passed a resolution to hold religious functions on weekly basis after the building is altered to meet the needs for Sikh Gurdwara. The building on 6908 McPherson Avenue went through major renovations in 1990 and again in 1993-94 to get the best use for religious functions and necessary for Gurdwara Sahib up keeping.
August 15th, 1994
Canadian Ramgarhia Society 1992 - 94 raised $47,690 for 10.35% share of the amount contributed by member societies. This amount was more than sufficient to grant 5 delegate’s representation amongst 15 member societies set out under the (FRCSS) constitution. Five Rivers Community Services Society (FRCSS) was established to run the Riverside Funeral Home on 7410 Hopcott Road in Delta BC. Dharam Singh Bansal the founding president of FRCSS was the big support for Canadian Ramgarhia Society.
November 27th, 1994:
The Election of the Canadian Ramgarhia Society was held under the Court Order of Justice J Brenner issued on Friday, the 7th day of October 1994. The court order gave 1992-93 listed member the right to renew the membership seven days prior to the date of November 1994 election and the right to vote in the General Meeting.
November 27th, 1994:
Canadian Ramgarhia Society increased the term of the Executive Committee to two years.
May 17th, 1998:
The election of May 17th, 1998 ended up in courts. The Chairman declared the result with 292 votes cast out of 851 listed members and registered it in Victoria. The committee elected on May 26th, 1996 refused to accept the result citing 2/3rd clause of the Constitution, considered it illegal and sought legal help and remained in office till March 21st, 1999 the Society held election with the procedure set out By Justice Boyle in the court order.
April 29th, 2001:
The Election for 2001-02 Directors of Canadian Ramgarhia Society was held under the Court Order issued on Wednesday January 3rd, 2001 by Madam Justice Kirkpatrick.
May 11th, 2003:
The Election for the Directors of the society took place because there was an earlier 40th anniversary (1972-2012)

problem for keeping up with the quorum under the clause 2/3rd of listed members must have voted for valid election. Executive committee sought legal help on the matter and extended the voting time for another day. The votes were cast in the same ballot box used on May 11th. Counted the combined ballots of both voting days and result was declared.

Canadian Ramgarhia Society purchased land for $700,000 located on 8365-140 Street in Surrey, BC
September 11th, 2005
Canadian Ramgarhia Society raised money for pledged amount of $5,000 for Guru Nanak Healing Garden Project and issued the cheque to University Hospital Foundation, Edmonton, Alberta.
January 12, 2005:
Canadian Ramgarhia Society raised $9688.78 for TSUNAMI RELIEF FUND and issued the cheque to World Vision Canada.
March 27th, 2006:
City of Surrey Councilors passed the rezoning application for building Sikh place of worship Gudwara Sahib on 8365-140 Street, Surrey, BC.
August 26th, 2007:
Canadian Ramgarhia Society sought the blessings of Almighty Akalpurkh in the presence of Panj Pyare for the Ground Breaking Ceremony on 8365-140 Street before starting construction project.
October 9th, 2007:
Canadian Ramgarhia Society obtained the Building Permit form the Surrey Municipal Hall for constructing Gurdwara Sahib Brookside. Permit No. B-06-035749
April 30th, 2010:
Society sold the property on McPherson Avenue & Dorset Street for $1.8 M and held the last religious service on McPherson Avenue & Dorset Street premises on April 25th, 2010. Congregation & Religious services moved to Gurdwara Sahib Brookside in Surrey in cars procession with Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Leading the way.
May. 16th, 2010:
Gurdwara Sahib Brookside opened for congregation with Arambh Akhand Path on May 14th, 2010 and Bhog Akhand Path on May 16th, 2010
May 2nd, 2011:
Society purchased residential property with house on 7937-140 Street valued $530,000 and renovated it for accommodation of society employees & visiting priests. 40th anniversary (1972-2012)
