Rama Khalaf / About

A conscientious and ambitious architecture professional, I have completed my studies at the Architectural Association in London and have earned an AA Diploma along with my RIBA parts 1 and 2. I have recently been awarded my RIBA part 3 qualification and subsequently registered with the Architect’s Registration Board in the UK. While working in the UK, Jordan, and the UAE, I have been involved in all RIBA work stages, and have shown strength and interest in post concept stages and project delivery.

My wide range of experience has helped me grow my ability to multitask, and am now able to work more efficiently in all stages and with different teams. I am always eager to learn and grow from my work and my colleagues, and as a result have shown great attention to detail and exceptional diligence in my work. I have been given several opportunities to lead projects, both in early and in later design stages, and have shown great ability to coordinate with consultants and project teams in the delivery of high quality documentation and projects. I have also developed my communication skills over the years of managing both internal and external project teams.

Outside of project work, I have been involved in digital practice groups at Gensler and Perkins and Will, and have always been interested in exploring new digital platforms and innovative solutions that aid in project delivery and construction. I also enjoy organising office wide social events with my colleagues.

The Vida Hotel and Serviced Apartments is part of the Marassi Al Bahrain master plan located in a reclaimed island North-East of Bahrain. The hotel was designed and submitted for tender in 2017, then went on hold due to the client’s budget. The client appointed a new lead consultant to conduct a VE exercise, and the project was picked up again in 2018 with a new team. We were appointed under the lead consultant to implement the VE items and recoordinate the drawing package with the new consultants.

Upon its return, I led a team of four through the resubmission of the Technical Design and Construction stages. I was dealing directly with the project managers, who are the lead consultants on the project, as well as being the point of contact for the engineering team and all other subconsultants. This project has brought many new challenges for me that have taught me how to manage a team, delegate work, and deal with the wider project team.

I mainly helped with the coordination and managing the team during submission times, and provided input for QAQC prior to final submissions of the documentation. My experience dealing with the same client on the Vida Hotel project gave me better insight into their requirements and expectations, which I was able to transfer to the team for this project.

Marassi is a Mediterranean Marine & Golf resort covering more than 6.4 million square metres. The site is facing the Mediterranean Sea on the northern side. The project is an existing development nestled along the Mediterranean north coast of Egypt. The Marassi development is a destination resort that offers a variety of exclusive communities, a beach resort and a town centre. The Civic Centre is located on the south-eastern corner of the development, and will comprise of approximately 7,900 square metres of offices, retail space, F&B outlets, a medical centre and a cinema.

Section through the plaza

I joined the project for a short period during the Concept Design stage to help capture client comments into the design before resubmitting the Concept Design report. I was responsible for implementing the client’s comments into the Revit mode, and updating the master plan and landscape diagrams to reflect the changes. I also aided in producing floor plans and building sections for the Concept Design report. I am currently developing the schematic design to incorporate all MEP and structural requirements, while maintaining the client’s vision for the project.

The Diar Ras Al Hadd Development Company commissioned Dar Al Handasah (Dar), with the support of Perkins and Will as lead designers, to provide design and supervision services for the Ras Al Hadd Beach Resort in Oman. The master plan was initially designed by Godwin Austen Johnson architects (GAJ) in July 2013. The project was to be developed in two phases: Phase 1 for standalone high-end residential villas, and Phase 2 for branded villas, a 5* hotel and spa, a beach club and a dive centre.

EIA was looking to build a holistic community that will house their headquarters, as well as become a home to potential future subsidiaries. The design of the building was inherently flexible, where the same floor plate could be used for a single tenant, double tenancy, or quadruple tenancy.

Emirates Investment Authority HQ

Formation diagrams

While the building uses passive techniques for shading, the facade also plays a part in protecting it from the challenging environmental conditions of the site. Stone louvres sit on top of the glass curtain wall as a prudent response to the harsh summer sun. Built into the design of the facade are cut-outs that act as sky gardens for the offices. This allows natural daylight into the deep floor plate and act as collaboration spaces. The fins covering the sky gardens highlight the nature of the space beyond, by changing from stone to back-lit recycled glass fins for a dynamic animation of the exterior skin. I led this competition along with one colleague. Together, we worked on all aspects of the planning of the building, the design, and the presentation. We also collaborated with the Interior Design team to provide the client with many flexible options of using the floorplate. We also worked closely with visualisers to provide high quality images for the client.

Given the short time frame of the competition, I had many roles in the project that started with a programme test fit on the site. The formation exercise led to a minimum density and footprint coverage with maximum open space hence the three towers. I built the digital model of the scheme which led to the production of the renderings, several physical models, and all the drawings required for the submission. The facade was built using grasshopper to control the size of the triangles according to floor to floor heights and material thicknesses.

Work Stages: Developed Design /Concept Design GFA: 35,000 sq.m. /29,500 sq.m.

The first phase of this project was a concept master plan for the bay area in Bahrain. The development created a modern marina and waterside district with the vision to create a vibrant, high quality leisure and retail destination that strengthens the area. The development also includes a landscaped park along the waterfront. The second phase of the project is a continuity to the first phase, ensuring a seamless design that intends to connect the city with the water by providing a new waterfront public park destination for both city and community. In both phases, the development is divided into districts, each with its own unique character, expressed through land use, plan form, architecture, and landscape.

King Faisal Highway Corniche Development - Phase 2 Concept Master Plan

Phases 1 & 2: Master plan

I joined the concept design stage of phase 1 where I developed a few options for the client. I rejoined the project for phase 1 when it was in the design development phase and I was in charge of designing and coordinating all the internal elevations of the units. I was involved in the phase 2 master plan from the beginning where I was part of the team that developed several options for the expansion. Once an option was chosen, I helped develop the plans and 3d models that were used for the client presentation.

The ‘city within a city’ concept

The project thesis deals with an issue that we are facing now more than ever - that of the virtual world taking over. This is not only starting to affect the physical manifestation of existing modern corporations, but it is also redefining the physicality of corporations that still only exist in the virtual world. The argument is as follows. 1. Corporate ratios: As a digital company, the need for office space is not as imperative to that of a typical corporation. 2. Resources: This project is concerned with how this type of corporation could develop a “give and take” relationship with its neighbors, using its resources while also allowing it to use Amazon’s resources. 3. Localism: By placing Amazon in Manhattan and giving it a local footprint in a highly culture and knowledge based neighborhood. The project reverses the general model of a corporate structure by minimizing the footprint of corporate spaces while creating a platform for people to physically interact with the corporation. This interaction is further enhanced by the transparencies of its facades, giving the spaces some sort of hierarchy in terms of accessibility.

1. Controlling Chaos This was one of the concept ideas submitted for the first stage of the pavilion competition, and was one of three winners. 2. De-Lamina Pavilion This pavilion was designed based on the idea of controlling chaos. The design was based on bundles of plywood strips that are attached at certain areas of the site and organized in a controlled way that allows the strips to fall to the ground and create different spaces. The organisation of these bundles is where the control lies, however the chaos is interpreted as being the final result as it includes a degree of randomness that is only understood after construction starts.

Controlling Chaos - winning concept board

3. Driftwood Pavilion As the final winner of the competition, the pavilion was designed and built by a group of 12 students. Driftwood was made up of a timber box beam with diaphragms that are attached to the form in order to hold the sculptural plywood pieces.

De-Lamina Pavilion

I acted as the project manager within the team, and had to keep track of our progress to ensure that construction was going on as planned. After the pavilion was built in Bedford Square, it was later sold to a client and had to be transported to the South of France to be reconstructed in a private residence.
