he 73rd Annual Vermontville Maple Syrup Festival opens Friday, April 26, and continues through the weekend, offering festival-goers the opportunity to experience a host of activities and variety of maple products. The event is sponsored by the Vermontville Maple Syrup Association as a means to celebrate the village known for its maple syrup. The festival offers a midway, talent show, petting zoo, antique car displays, two parades, musical acts and hours of entertainment for all ages. Syrup producers will be set up throughout the village with a host of products to indulge any sweet tooth. For more stories on this year’s festival, look inside.

One of the official signs of the arrival of spring (the first being the South Jefferson Street St. Patrick’s Day Parade) is the annual Vermontville Maple Syrup Festival coming to a town (Vermontville) near you next weekend. The fun begins this Friday evening with the annual Talent Show, followed by carnival rides, arts, crafts, flea market, games, parades, food (pancakes for sure) and, of course, the big reason for the festivities, gallons of Vermontville Maple Syrup and Maple Syrup Candy. Bring us a bag of maple syrup candy this week from the festival and get a $5 gift certificate and a bag of Medbug Caramel Corn. Shareathon 2013, “Hats off to Music” is today (Saturday) from 9am until 1:30pm at the First Baptist Church in Hastings. Sponsored by the Community Music School in Hastings you can enjoy performances by students, faculty & special guests benefitting the scholarship program and other needs at the school. The Pierce Cedar Creek Institute celebrates Earth Day this Monday, April 22 with a “Grow Native! Extravaganza”. You are invited to gather friends, family & everyone you know to help the institute by removing garlic mustard, an extremely invasive plant species, from the grounds. On this day the institute will kick off their “Grow Native!” planting project to plant native grasses along the entrance to the Visitor Center. Also in the celebration of Earth Day this Monday, 5:30pm Charlton Park will sponsor “Exploring Our Wetlands”. Joanne Barnard of the Barry Conservation District will present a brief introduction to the wetlands on the Charlton Park property and the group will follow with a tram trip to explore the wetlands. The City of Hastings begins the annual Spring Compostable Yard Debris Pickup this Monday, Earth Day. They will start out in the second ward south of the river and progress throughout town as quickly as the amount of yard debris will allow. You can find out each day’s schedule by listening to WBCH in the morning each day. Only biodegradable yard waste is accepted - grass, leaves, small limbs (6” or less) and brush. Loose materials may be in Kraft biodegradable bags, no plastic bags will be picked up. More information will be published in the Reminder or you can call the City at 945-2468. 6. The Toddler Story Time, Tuesdays at 10:30am, and the Preschool Story Time, Fridays at 10:30am, at the Hastings Public Library will study “The Little Red Hen” this week. The Movie Memories feature on April 25 is “The Dirty Dozen” starring Lee Marvin, Ernest Borgnine, Charles Bronson and many other action stars in this story of convicted murderers recruited for a mass assignation of German officers during WWII. The movies play on Thursday evenings 5-8pm in the library community room and are free to all. 7. The Lakewood Area Choral Society will perform a Sacred Music Concert next Sunday, April 28 at the Our Savior Lutheran Church, 7910 S. Joe Hwy. Lansing. Admission is free to all (a free will offering will be accepted). 8. The annual Woodpecker Festival will be next weekend in the Village of Middleville. Activities include displays in the village, guided tours (bird walks & golf cart trips) on the Paul Henry Trail, nature and art exhibits, crafts, nature seminars and the Woodpecker Ball featuring live music & dinner. There are fees for many presentations, the ball is $35 per person and includes wine and beer tastings, a silent auction, the keynote speaker and the ball. The Free Spring Movies at the Cinema 4 Theater in Downtown Hastings continue this week with showings of “ParaNorman” at 9am & 10am this Saturday and Sunday. Next week it’s the final free spring movie “The Lorax” at the same times. There is a 15 minute intermission at each feature so all ages may attend. Admittance is free to all.
