April 25, 2015

Greetings Link Sisters, I am pleased to welcome Link sisters, guests and supporters of the Raleigh (NC) Chapter to the 6th Annual Emerald Award Luncheon. For 65 years, the Raleigh (NC) Chapter’s stellar programs have consistently represented the best of Linkdom. You have partnered with the Wake County American Heart Association to sponsor the workshop series, Healthy Eating on a Budget. In the spirit of partnership, you have forged relationships with Habitat for Humanity to provide health and wellness services to residents of Apollo Heights. In executing programs that focus on education, culture and healthy living, you are purposefully addressing the needs of your community. Today, I applaud you for recognizing outstanding leaders in your community. Betty Camp, Kelly Starling Lyons, Dr. M. Iyailu Moses, Belinda Pettiford and Eleanora Tate are trailblazers making a difference, enriching lives of the underserved, and inspiring many along the way. As you celebrate, I charge your chapter with reflecting on all you have accomplished, while also remembering there is still much work to be done. It is through the great work of your chapter that we continue to sustain the rich legacy of our co-founders and extend our organization’s reach throughout the Raleigh community. I am certain that the friends and supporters of the Raleigh (NC) Chapter join me in applauding your outstanding endeavors. I am proud of the significant impact this chapter has made in Building A Healthy Legacy: Our Prescription for the Future.

Sisterly,

Glenda Newell-Harris, M.D.

April 25, 2015 On behalf of The Raleigh (NC) Chapter of the Links, Inc., we thank you for attending and supporting our “6th Annual Emerald Awards Program.” This event recognizes five outstanding women in North Carolina who have achieved significant accomplishments in the areas of the arts, services to youth, health & human services initiatives, and trends impacting both the U.S. and globally. Funds raised from the program will support our community based initiatives. We have been a part of the Raleigh community for 66 years. Our members proudly provide many thousands of service hours annually, creating transformational programming and impacting lives in local communities of color through our five Facet Program Areas - Services to Youth, The Arts, National Trends and Services, International Trends and Services, and Health and Human Services … all focused on improving the quality of life for individuals, families and communities. The Emerald Award was established in 2010 as a program for our chapter that would reflect the essence of Linkdom. It is our distinct privilege to execute this event in a manner that makes all of you proud to be a part of the Raleigh / Wake County community. The Raleigh Links are here to serve and this program provides an opportunity for us to give back by both putting a spotlight on accomplished women and by raising funds to be able to do more programming. Since 1949, through our circle of friendship, we are proud to utilize our chapter’s collective talents and resources to make a difference. Thank you for your continued support. Sincerely,

Edwina Thompson President, Raleigh Chapter

Janine Rouson Chairperson, 2015 Emerald Award Program

The Raleigh (NC) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated The Links, Incorporated is an international, not-for-profit corporation, established in 1946. The membership consists of nearly 14,000 professional women of color in 280 chapters located in the US and the Bahamas. It is one of the nation's oldest and largest volunteer service organizations of extraordinary women who are committed to enriching, sustaining and ensuring the culture and economic survival of African Americans and other persons of African ancestry. The Links, Inc. has attracted many distinguished women who are individual achievers and have made a difference in their communities and the world. They are business and civic leaders, role models, mentors, activists and volunteers who work towards a common vision by engaging like- minded organizations and individuals for partnership. Links members contribute more than 500,000 documented hours of community service annually – strengthening their communities and enhancing the nation. The organization is the recipient of awards from the UN Association of New York and the Leon H. Sullivan Foundation for its premier programs. The outstanding programming has five facets which include Services to Youth, The Arts, National Trends and Services, International Trends and Services and Health and Human Services. The Raleigh Chapter of The Links, Inc. was founded April 18, 1949, the 13th chapter of The Links, Incorporated, and it was the last club organized before the nationalization of the organization - which took place in June of 1949. The Chapter's establishment centered on the founders' vision of creating a "link" that would bring friends willing to serve the community sharing their time, talents and resources. Then and now, community service has been the cornerstone of the organization's outreach. We contribute to the community in civic, cultural, youth development, performing & literary arts, educational, and health endeavors in the Raleigh / Wake County area. In partnership with the local community, we contribute thousands of volunteer service hours annually. As part of The Links Southern Area HBCU Endowment Initiative, the Chapter contributed $10,000 to Shaw University.

The Emerald Award Program Building on a concept by Lucille Webb (one of special local Platinum Links) to recognize women with outstanding accomplishments, the Emerald Award Program was established in 2010 by the Raleigh Chapter of The Links to recognize and honor women in North Carolina who have made significant contributions to African American communities through achievement in the five Facet programs areas. In establishing the Emerald Award recognition program, the goals of the Raleigh Chapter are:

To honor women who have been successful in their professions or careers; who have made contributions to North Carolina, the US or internationally; and to recognize what they inspire and motivate in others.

To host an annual invitational event that showcases the programmatic activities of the Chapter, commemorates the chartering of the Chapter, and raises funds for implementing community service programs.

To bring about positive change in the community; enrich and sustain positive images and role models for the African American community, especially its youth. For more information, visit, www.raleighlinks.org and www.emeraldawardprogram.com

2015 EMERALD AWARD HONOREES Services to Youth Kelly Starling Lyons writes to turn moments, memories and history into stories of discoveries. She writes so that young people can see themselves in books and know that their families and history matters and to let kids know that they are special and loved. Ms. Lyons was inspired to write when she saw the rare occurrence of an African American girl featured on the cover of a picture book. Her first book was published in 2004, NEATE:Eddie’s Ordeal. The book explores the relationship between a thirteen-year-old African American boy who loves to play basketball and his civil rights veteran dad. A plot point was inspired by a sit-in movement led by the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee, a group founded on the campus of Shaw University. Ms. Lyons strongly believes in sharing her work with children and adults. She is a regular presenter at schools, libraries, museums, clubs, festivals and conferences. She is on the roster of approved writers-in-residence with the United Arts Council of Raleigh & Wake County and a teaching artist with the Arts & Sciences Council in Charlotte. Each year, she conducts dozens of author visits in NC and beyond. She is a member of The Brown Bookshelf, a team of black authors and illustrators dedicated to raising awareness of the many African-American voices creating books for young readers. The signature campaign is 28 Days Later, a Black History Month celebration of African-American children’s book authors and illustrators. Ms. Kelly Lyons writes to give back.

The Arts Eleanora E. Tate is a children's book author, folklorist, short story writer, creative writing teacher and former newspaper reporter. When asked what she wanted to be known for -- her legacy -- she replied, "That I tried." She was named a 1999 Zora Neale Hurston Award winner (with Dr. John Hope Franklin) by the National Association of Black Storytellers, Inc. She is a former national president Of the National Association of Black Storytellers, Inc. Ms. Tate taught children’s literature at North Carolina Central University, and is a former instructor with the Institute of Children's Literature, West Redding, CT. She is also on the faculty of Hamline University's Creative Writing Program low-residency Masters Program. Included in her 11 published books are Celeste’s Harlem Renaissance, The Minstrel’s Melody, A Blessing in Disguise, Thank you Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr and The Secret of Gumbo Grove.

She was active in numerous social, community, historical and cultural organizations, including the Concerned Citizens Operation Reach-Out Organization. Ms. Tate writes “books and short stories so that everyone of every ethnic group can read about the proud history and culture of African Americans.” She “shares what she has seen and experienced, and what other folks have told” her, “to create a good read."

National Trends and Services

Wake County Commission for Women- Women of Wake; NC Association of Rehabilitation Facilities, Distinguished Service Award; . Autism has gained national attention in recent years as researchers and scientists seek to find answers to what has been and continues to be a puzzling occurrence in many children.

International Trends and Services Dr. M Iyailu Moses has always seen the need for, valued, and shared her knowledge and understanding of cultural diversity with her colleagues, her students, and her community through numerous involvements in her professional endeavors, but also in her personal experiences. Her extensive African travel has included assignments in Egypt, Benin, Swaziland, Ethiopia, Ghana and Togo. Dr. Moses has used her vast and lengthy experience as a classroom teacher, curriculum specialist, administrator, educational leader, mentor, and volunteer to advance education for African Americans and for those of African ancestry. Dr. Moses is the Dean of the School of Liberal Arts and Education at Saint Augustine's University. She has numerous professional leadership achievements and presentations, volunteer and community experiences, organizations memberships, and awards and special recognitions. She acted as a Project Manager for a USAID sponsored program awarded to St. Augustine's University entitled TAGS—Textbooks for a Global Society. Dr. Moses has, throughout her career in education, served to expand the global platform by designing, developing, and implementing programs to service the educational and cultural needs of people of African descent. Dr. Moses’ Study Abroad programs have enhanced knowledge of African citizens in those countries and American citizens who have traveled in the programs.

Health and Human Services Belinda Pettiford has 25 years of experience in public health. She is responsible for programs and services for women of childbearing age. Ms. Pettiford leads a team of fifty plus that includes nurses, social workers, health educators, and other public health professionals working to improve the health of infants, women and families in North Carolina. Currently, Belinda is the Branch Head for Women's Health at the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Public Health. She was recipient of the first C. Significance of the Award Gift to the Honorees The official colors of The Links, Incorporated are white and emerald green. The gift selected for this year's award honorees is an Emerald and Pearl Sterling Silver necklace, thereby aligning with the colors of The Links. The 2015 necklace was specially designed by Claire Brown at Fink's Jewelers. We believe the selection of this necklace provides an attractive and feminine keepsake memento that the honorees can wear proudly on many occasions. The emerald is one of the most highly valued and treasured of all jewels. Emeralds have natural facets – which makes it a perfect symbol of the five Facet Program Areas for The Links, Incorporated and the honoree categories of the Emerald Award. The beautiful faceted emerald is a power stone and said to encourage clear vision, faith, intelligence, inspiration, joy, harmony, justice, unity and friendship. The pearl symbolizes overcoming adversity through radiant transcendence. In some cultures, the pearl is seen as an emblem for feminine power, begetting birth and is said to have the power to heal or protect from harm. The Raleigh Chapter is pleased to present the distinguished Emerald Award and an elegant emerald and pearl necklace to the 2015 Honorees that will be memorable for many years to come.
