Inspired by border openings and increased confidence in travel, South African Tourism held their maiden virtual roadshow in India to capitalise on the strong consumer and corporate traveller demand in the country. The ‘VirtuallyYoursSouthAfrica’ roadshow is expected to boost tourism economies in both nations, especially as the South African national tourism board focuses on bullishly driving strategic recovery measures in India. According to the Tourism Sector Recovery Plan put together by the tourism board earlier this year, key focus areas remain re-igniting demand, protecting and rejuvenating supply and strengthening capacity. The recently concluded roadshow in India is the first of many efforts to reignite international travel demand, in order to meet a global target of 2.6 million visitors in FY21-22.
Cambodia has lifted all quarantine requirements for fully vaccinated international travellers entering Cambodia from 15th November. Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Sen said the removal of quarantine requirements for fully vaccinated travelers will enable the country to fully reopen and that it mirrored the policies of other countries in the region. He also emphasised that any unvaccinated travellers must still undergo a 14-day quarantine. “Cambodia is almost fully vaccinated at nearly 88 percent of the total population of around 16 million. So, there is no quarantine requirement any longer, except for those who have not been vaccinated who still need to do a 14-day quarantine like before,” he said.

Cruise tourism… a savior for India Tourism
The World Travel and Tourism Council calculated that tourism generated US$220 billion or 9.2% of India's GDP in 2018 and supported 42.673 million jobs, 8.1% of its total employment. Things of course changed dramatically after the pandemic. However, cruise tourism has definitely redeemed the tourism industry in India. Guests avail the best of everything from food and drink to hospitality and destination under one roof. There’s something for everyone. Cruising is certainly the perfect holiday and the best value any package can bring to the table. Local tourism hasn’t looked better. In fact, India’s cruising has shown the way for world cruising where numbers, unfortunately, are discouraging. There’s a great opportunity here in India and we are only too happy to present a fitting offering.

people are natural born hosts, storytellers, and it brings us great joy to see guests from other nations experiencing the secrets that only locals know! With 900 years of history, we have Europe’s oldest borders and picturesque and romantic surroundings just a short distance away. We have 25 World Heritage Sites, mediaeval castles, cobblestone villages, breathtaking nature parks, lakes, and numerous outdoor activities with pure fresh air, captivating cities, superb gastronomy and world-renowned wines, and a unique cultural heritage where tradition and modernity blend in perfect harmony. Many celebrities travel to Portugal in search of privacy and one-of-a-kind experiences. All year long, it's a fantastic vacation spot.
How have the numbers changed for Portugal over the past couple of years? What are the contributing factors?
Portugal is frequently characterised as a beach-loving country with pleasant weather and friendly people. It is one of the most well-known tourist destinations in Central and Northern Europe, and has won numerous awards for tourism and hospitality management. In addition, as of November 2020, Portugal had won Best European Destination for the fourth year in a row, as well as twenty additional World Travel Awards.
With world-class beaches, intriguing, active cities, and protected natural parks, it's tough to limit oneself to just one vacation in Portugal. The country boasts a well-developed and cost-effective transportation system, as well making moving around this beautiful country an ease. We noticed a significant increase in the number of travellers from India before Covid, and we foresee an increase in the number of travellers once the country opens up.
What are the marketing initiatives undertaken by Portugal Tourism to woo the Indian traveller?
The majority of tours in India are booked through travel firms. Visitors put their trust in travel agents when it comes to trip recommendations. As a result, it is important to educate travel companies, who will in turn urge passengers to visit any destination.
We opened an office here in India early 2020 covering the entire market with two objectives in mind - First one is to increase awareness about Portugal as a tourist destination and the second one, of course, is to increase partnerships with different tour operators and travel agencies to increase their knowledge and expertise on Portugal. We're currently focusing on increasing trade partner awareness and we'll be launching an e-learning programme to educate agents about the destination in greater depth very soon.
Apart from that, we aim to conduct more networking events and exhibition participations in the near future as well as a FAM trip once the country opens up for tourists. Many things are in the planning that would undoubtedly attract the Indian traveller.
How do you see Portugal Tourism evolving in next five years?
Portugal was named the Best European Destination, as previously stated. There was an upsurge in the number of Indian travellers prior to the pandemic. Once the country reopens to visitors, we expect the number to rise. Our goal is to raise awareness of our destination and culture. In the future years, we anticipate a significant increase in the number of Indian tourists

SriLankan Airlines organised a press meet at the Leela Ambience Gurugram with an aim to consolidate operations to pre covid-19 levels. The idea was to disseminate the message to Indian travellers that the Airline is committed to increase the flights to destinations that were temporarily halted due to the pandemic, at the same time restoring operations and offering Indian travellers a wide range of connections to Sri Lanka.
Mr. Ashok Pathirage, Chairman SriLankan Airlines said “India is our biggest market, and we are dedicated to re-establish operations to full scale where the Indian market is concerned. We continued to operate both passenger and cargo flights to and from India even during periods of lockdown and despite many global travel restrictions. It is an ideal time to create awareness about SriLankan Airlines’ operations in the Indian market and build confidence among travellers to book with the Airline as lockdowns are being lifted and global travel restrictions are eased.” “Sri Lanka as a destination has huge market potential for the middle class segment. It is now open and is a choice for all. We have restructured ourselves over a period of time for making journeys enjoyable and successful,” he added. Commenting on the occasion, he emphasised, “We aspire to introduce more dedicated Cargo flights to operation with 250 to 300 flights per week in the next two years. India is a strong market and is our top priority at the moment and we at SriLankan Airlines wish to cater to all the sectors, be it luxury, leisure, weddings, etc. India continues to be one of Sri Lanka’s most significant source markets for international travellers.” “The Airline was able to adapt to meet the changing needs of the industry as the pandemic raged on and played a key role in bridging countries and facilitating the movement of people and critical supplies, including between India and Sri Lanka,” stated Richard Nuttall, Chief Commercial Officer of SriLankan Airlines.

Covid was indeed tough, but Maldives is on honeymooners’ mind…comment
The Maldives is on everyone's mind. When I look around at the breath-taking natural beauty of our islands and the safety provided by the naturally distanced unique geography of Maldives, I understand why. There are so many unique experiences one can have here. It is also a destination for travellers to come, unwind, let go and truly connect with themselves, their loved ones, and the natural environment.
Is there any more information that you would like to share with us?
I want to share that the Maldives is a safe haven to travel to during this time. Stringent safety measures are implemented all across the entire island, and the naturally-distanced islands provide unparalleled safety. The traveller’s health, safety, and wellbeing are our utmost priority, and we believe this is one of the main reasons why the Maldives flourished during this time.

Visit Maldives launches “Redefining MICE” global campaign to promote the country as a preferred MICE destination. The campaign was launched during a special luncheon held on the sidelines of the MILT Congress held in Grand Hyatt Mumbai.
The purpose of this campaign is to promote the Maldives as an emerging top destination to conduct meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE) events. Our aim is to redefine the business environment, which is often thought to be somber, serious and limited to boardrooms and conference halls. Through this campaign Maldives will be promoted as a destination that is perfect to seamlessly merge business with leisure by promoting different experiences. MILT Congress is an event with a reputation for bringing together carefully vetted Indian MICE buyers to meet international suppliers.
Through this event, we also provided the attendees with latest destination information and travel guidelines and promoted the Maldives as a safe haven due to the naturally social-distanced geography and the stringent safety measures in place at our resorts, hotels, guesthouses and liveaboards, amidst the global pandemic. A raffle was drawn during the launching of the Redefining MICE campaign, which gave a lucky winner, along with a partner, a 3 nights free holiday at Paradise Island Resort.
Through this global campaign Maldives will be promoted as an ideally located venue for regional gatherings, providing the opportunity to transform any MICE event from sombre to exciting. During the campaign, many activities are planned to be held across the globe in the coming months by Visit Maldives in collaboration with our foreign PR agencies and industry partners, to promote the Maldives as a preferred location for businesses to hold their next MICE business event.
These activities will be held from October to November 2021 and will include global media campaigns, participation in MICE exhibitions, social media campaigns, distribution of digital brochures and videos, MICE FAM trips, a dedicated MICE landing page on Visit Maldives website and MICE dedicated roadshows in different countries.
