Sujata Singh to be India’s next foreign secretary

S

ujata Singh, currently envoy to Germany, will be India’s next foreign

secretary following an approval of her appointment by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, ending months

of speculation on who will head the foreign services. 59-year-old Singh, a 1976 batch

IFS officer, was a close contender for the top job along with India’s ambassador to China S Jaishankar,

who is a batch junior to her. His name was doing the rounds because of his excellent service record particularly as envoy to China. Due to retire in July next year, Singh will now have a two- year extension and will succeed Ranjan Mathai, who is set to retire on July 31. Singh, who will be the third woman to head the services after Chokila Iyer and Nirupama Rao, is the daughter of T V Rajeshwar, the former Intelligence Bureau chief known to be close to the top brass of the Congress. Singh is the wife of former secretary (east) Sanjay Singh, who retired in April this year. There were reports that she along with other diplomats who are senior to Jaishankar were contemplating resignation in case of his elevation. Finally, the Prime Minister plumped for seniority. Her name was cleared after the Prime Minister returned from his Kashmir visit last week. Though Sujata Singh has not done any diplomatic stint in India’s neighbourhood, she was undersecretary looking after Nepal from 1982-1985 before her postings in Europe including Italy and France.

Bangalore set to get first blast-proof building by 2014

I

n a first for Bangalore, a building resistant to blasts, floods and earthquakes will be ready by early 2014. It will house a vital data hub of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). Bangalore Data Centre, which will get CISF cover, will house the primary data (both demographic

and biometric) centre for the entire country. The data relates to generation of Aadhaar cards. Being built by Engineers India Ltd (EIL), the data centre is coming up next to Tatanagar Main Road, off NH-4, near Sahakarnagar. Spread over 6,245 sqm, the centre has a storage capacity of 6 peta bytes

with 4,000 servers. A senior EIL engineer said the building is blast proof with category ‘C’ rating. “The data storage won’t be impacted in explosions. The 500-mm-thick wall makes it a tough structure. In all likelihood, no structure in Bangalore has such safety specifications,” he added.

UIDAI’s office is a green building too

The building can withstand floods and quakes too. “Bangalore is under Zone-2 on the quakesensitive scale, but the data centre is being built for the next level - Zone-3 - to make it safer. The building is at an elevation of 2.1 metres from the road level,

staying free of flood threats,” a UIDAI official said. UIDAI deputy director general Ashok Dalwai told TOI the shell of the building has been handed over to Wipro Infotech for developing the data centre. “Besides meeting global standards on safety and security, the structure will be a green building compliant with Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design gold rating,” he said. The complex will also house the technology centre and regional office of UIDAI. The building is likely to be ready by March 30. The UIDAI’s offices are currently spread out in Bangalore on rented premises - mini data centre is in Whitefield, technology development office in Marthahalli and regional office on Race Course Road.

Why is it vital?

UIDAI centre will have 6pb storage capacity, forecasting Aadhaar for 120 crore people. Capture of biometrics and demographic data amounts to 12pb data. A million Aadhaar generations a day demands 15tb input/output and over 350 trillion biometric matches daily at current rate of enrolment. Rs 116 crore will be spent on data centre; cumulative investment works out to Rs 234 crore.

India defends US surveillance programmes as Snowden seeks asylum in numerous countries

E

xternal affairs minister Salman Khurshid on Tuesday defended the vast US surveillance programme of phone logs and Internet data revealed by intelligence leaker Edward Snowden.

“Some of the information they got out of their scrutiny, they were able to use it to prevent serious terrorist attacks in several countries,” Salman Khurshid told reporters in Brunei in a broadcast interview.

“This is not scrutiny and access to actual messages. It is only computer analysis of patterns of calls and emails that are being sent... it is not actually snooping on the content of anyone’s messages or con-

versations,” he added. The comments by Khurshid, who met US secretary of state John Kerry in New Delhi in June 2013, contrast with India’s initial reaction when a foreign ministry spokesman

Minor girl raped, killed in Arunachal

A

minor girl was allegedly raped and killed and her body was thrown into a jungle at Bhalukpong, in West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh. The three-year-old girl was raped and murdered by one Labi Tuksa yesterday, police said today. The minor was taken away from her house around 9 am and then raped and murdered by the accused, who left her body in a jungle area. It was also learnt that the accused was well acquainted with the victim’s family and used to visit their home almost on a daily basis, police said.A case has been registered with the Bhalukpong police station and investigation is on. After the kid went missing around 9 am, her mother reported the matter to the Bhalukpong police station and the officer in charge Mipak Riba swung into action. Tuksa, an acquaintance of the girl’s family who was seen visiting her house at Khula Camp was rounded up on suspicion by police, who spilled the beans. He had taken the girl to a tourist lodge at Bhalukpong, raped her and dumped her body in the nearby jungle after

murdering her, they said. West Kameng SP Nupur Prasad informed that the accused had admitted to committing the crime during interrogation and later he led the police to recover the body. This is the fifth case of rape and murder in the state after a Class VI student was allegedly raped by a constable of the Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) after he forced her to drink alcohol at Longding on March 2 last. A minor girl was raped by Chakma refugees on February 11 last when she, along with her friends, had gone on a picnic on the banks of the Bereng river at Chowkham in Lohit district. The rape and murder of a school girl in Tawang district, bordering China, on August 2 last year and arrest of eight students of her school had sparked a public outcry in the state. Eight students, including a girl, of the same school were arrested in connection with the incident. A girl was brutally murdered after raped while she was on way to school by foot on September 12 last year, by Bangaldeshi refugees in East Siang district.

warned that any privacy violation would be “unacceptable.” He is attending an Asian security forum in Brunei, along with Kerry and regional foreign ministers. Based on documents provided by Snowden, The Guardian newspaper reported at the weekend that US intelligence services were also spying on 38 embassies and diplomatic missions of its allies including India. Snowden, whose US passport has been cancelled, remains holed up in Moscow airport where he has sought asylum from 21 countries, including India. WikiLeaks disclosed on Monday that Snowden had prepared requests for asylum in countries including Austria, Bolivia, Brazil, China, Cuba, Finland, the French Republic, Germany, India, the Italian Republic, Ireland, Netherlands, Nicaragua, Norway, Poland, the Russian Federation, Spain, the Swiss Confederation and the Venezuela. Snowden had earlier sought asylum in Russia as well. However, Kremlin has claimed that Snowden has abandoned his asylum request in Russia. The requests were given to a Russian official at the airport and were to be delivered to the appropriate embassies in Moscow.

Uttarakhand disaster: A question of faith They’re shaken to the core, but for many faith stands strong. Pilgrims on the Char Dham trail escaped catastrophe, fought hunger and fear — seemingly clinging to their faith in God. But many coping with the trauma of seeing family swept away are trying to reason out the tragedy for their peace of mind — protecting their faith, blaming the unpredictability of weather. Many vow never to return, others say faith remains intact but pilgrimages are off the map. Gen Bikram Singh, who is visiting the state to assess conditions, said most were in the temple town of Badrinath. Meanwhile, state authorities say that up to 3,000 could be missing, far more than the previous estimate of 350. Police said 43 more bodies were cremated as aid agencies warned of an outbreak of disease in relief camps. Nearly 100,000 people have been evacuated so far, with the military continuing helicopter flights into the mountains to reach the last of the Hindu pilgrims and tourists who remain there. This year’s early monsoon rains in the Uttarakhand region are believed to be the heaviest in 80 years. Swollen rivers have swept away entire villages in the state, where there were many travellers in what is peak tourist season. Officials say the toll could rise as more bodies are found in remote areas.

N

early 3,000 people are still stranded in India’s Uttarakhand state where

more than 800 people have died in floods and landslides, the army chief says.

Faith grows: Sawar Ram Chaudhary and wife Radha Devi went five days at Rampur without food. They’re back home and this they attribute to God’s grace. “Despite what we went through, our faith in God has increased. If the almighty wills, I’ll go on the Char Dham yatra again,” Chaudhary says. His wife’s with him on this. “I’ve no fear. It’s God’s blessing that we’re back with our children.”

they scare you to death.” Harjinder Singh says he can’t forget the trauma. “People stripped bodies to save themselves from cold. I’ll never go there again.”

Kapil Kapoor’s faith is stronger than ever. He’d barely left Kedarnath with his family when the downpour came. “Trapped for five days at Phata, we lost all hope. We were rescued by God’s grace,” says Kapoor. “This was a message from God to a society where loot, violence and corruption are on the rise.”

Shaken,

shattered

“When you see bodies floating down the river, children crying, hunger, blood, starvation, you’re bound to be shaken. But losing faith in God is still the biggest sin,” Omprakash Goyal from Haryana’s Sirsa says. He was trapped at Gaurikund but will “surely go to Char Dham again.” But Jaipur’s Ram Singh is decided he’d never allow his children got for the hill pilgrimage. “Faith’s intact, but Char Dham yatra’s out.” Similarly, Ludhiana’s Jeevan Singh says, “These things can’t shake your faith, but

Rajendra Pareekh stresses the natural disaster factor. “There’s no reason for faith to be shaken. Natural calamities happen.” On that note, another survivor adds, “Terror attacks don’t mean life comes to a standstill.” P K Manna doesn’t like keeping things unfinished. “A trek to Yamunotri would’ve completed my yatra. I’m not likely to go in the next two years, but I will complete the yatra.”

Of what use faith Sonepat’s Mukesh Kumar was stranded at Badrinath with family. The experience was traumatic. “I gave away my gold rings and chain to buy five days’ meal until ITBP jawans rescued us,” he says, exhausted from fighting the exploitation. Suraj Kumar Rathi of Sambalpur performed the last rites for 17 of his family. Faith, he says, is dead. Suraj watched his relatives getting washed away — only two escaped. “We had gone on a pilgrimage. There’s no question of visiting these places ever again in my life,” he said. To go or not to go

‘Bring out the truth’ The Indian army chief flew into Uttarakhand on Friday morning. Gen Singh said the worst-hit temple town of Kedarnath had

been cleared and “there are no more people to be evacuated from there”. “From Harsil, I am told that there are about 500 survivors, who are being evacuated by road as well. In Badrinath, there are still 2,500 stranded people. If the weather permits, they shall be evacuated soon,” he added. Meanwhile, a senior state official said the number of missing could be a lot higher than previous estimates. “The objective is to bring out the truth about the missing number of people so that their near and dear ones are not kept in the dark,” The Times of India quoted

Uttarakhand chief secretary Subhash Kumar as saying. Almost two weeks days after flooding began, rescue teams are still battling to reach remote areas in the Himalayas and in the state capital, Dehradun, distraught relatives clutching photographs of missing family members have been waiting for days, hoping for news. Every summer, hundreds of thousands of devout Hindus make a pilgrimage known as the Himalayan Char Dham Yatra to four temple towns in Uttarakhand. The pilgrims usually return before the monsoon rains, which generally begin in July.

We were trapped for five days in Phata and had lost hope but by the grace of God we were rescued and are alive today... Cases of loot, violence and corruption are on rise and hence, God wanted to send us a strong message — KapilKapoor says he will definitely go back. I have believed in God since a child and will always continue to do so... If I get another opportunity to visit the shrines, I will definitely go — ArunBalaji, 23, was rescued from Gaurikund. My faith in God has actually increased after returning safely from the jaws of death. I am going to visit the chardhams again as soon as the government opens the pilgrim route — Venkatesh, rescued from Gaurikund. I had no hope that I would survive. This is like a second life for me. I will never embark on pilgrimage to Uttarakhand again —P Sivaprakasam, 66, was stranded at a guesthouse in Sugitop for 5 days Trekking for 11km at my age took a toll on my body —G Veeralakshmi, 57, says she will never go back The disaster has not affected our faith in God because we be-

India will remain an important strategic partner: US

xpressing satisfaction at secretary of state John Kerry’s first visit to New

Flexible le Timetab

Delhi, the US has said it’s keen to carry forward the “positive relationship” with India which will

“continue to be an important strategic partner.” Kerry “did enjoy every aspect

of his visit,” State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki told reporters here on Tuesday noting he

“had some very productive meetings as part of the India strategic dialogue.” “India has been and will continue to be an important strategic partner,” she said adding, “he is grateful he was able to spend a couple of days there and he’s looking forward to continuing the positive relationship.” On his return from his foreign trip on Wednesday, Kerry will be passing along to President Barack Obama and Vice-President Joe Biden and the White House all about his discussions in New Delhi, Psaki said. Kerry also met special adviser to Pakistan Prime Minister on foreign affairs, Sartaj Aziz, on the sidelines of the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) in Brunei, Psaki said. The two “highlighted the importance of the bilateral relationship and expressed the importance of continued close cooperation with Pakistan to facilitate an Afghanled peace process.” On the continued bombings in Pakistan, she said US “stands with the people of Pakistan in condemning such senseless and inhumane acts.” “We offer our deepest condolences to the families of those killed and wish those injured a speedy recovery,” Psaki said taking note of reports of numerous bombings over the weekend resulting the loss of many Pakistani.

Maoist attack: Pakur SP ignored alert, walked into a trap

y all accounts slain Pakur SP Amarjeet Balihar took lightly the headquarters alert to police superintendents to remain extra vigilant because of the operation against the Maoists in the Palamu and Latehar jungles. He travelled to Dumka with a lean force, comprising mostly his guards and an escort team. The Maoists, closely following his movements for the past few days, laid a trap and ambushed him on his return journey. Around 3,000 security officers and jawans of the Jharkhand police and central reserve police force (CRPF) have been carrying out an operation against a Maoist group in the jungles of Palamu since June 25. According to several intelligence alerts sent to police headquarters, after having lost several members in the past one week — the police, however, couldn’t recover the bodies — the Maoists were looking for an opportunity to strike at some other location to throw the police off the scent. Their targets are politicians and policemen. During the last weekend, following an intelligence alert, the police did not allow the convoy of former deputy chief minister Sudesh Mahato to cross the Bundu valley in Ranchi district

and advised him to return to Jamshedpur. Mahato followed the instruction. All political leaders have been subsequently advised to minimise their movements in rural areas after sunset. “The Maoists have carried out the dastardly act to divert our attention from the ongoing op-

eration in Palamu, where we are about to reach their strongest and safest hideouts,” director general of police Rajiv Kumar said before flying to Dumka to take stock of the situation with senior officials of the state police and CRPF. Dumka, Pakur, Sahebganj and Godda districts are among the

poorest, remotest and predominantly underdeveloped districts of Jharkhand. Sharing borders with Bihar in the north and West Bengal in the east, several parts of Dumka remain cut off from the mainstream and there is very poor road and telephone connectivity.

For more than two decades, the local Santhal tribes have successfully prevented the Maoists from spreading their base in the region. But with increasing mining activities and displacement taking place, the ultras have gradually started getting acceptance.

‘Ramaiya Vastavaiya’: Losing weight was a tough task for Girish Kumar

G

irish Kumar, set to make his debut on Bollywood boulevard with ‘Ramaiya Vastavaiya’, says nothing is more important than the viewers’ reaction. “I believe that ultimately the film should speak for itself,” he said adding that it applies to everyone - “be it a producer or a star or newcomer.” Son of producer Kumar Taurani, Girish wanted to become an actor “right from my mother’s womb. Every day has been a step towards it.” For the opening scene of Prabhudheva-directed ‘Ramaiya Vastavaiya’, the newcomer had to trim down, which was tough. “Losing weight was a tough task. I tend to put on weight quickly. My introduction scene was a surfing sequence and I had to be in good shape for that. I got professional help and I started working out and eating clean,” Girish told IANS. ‘Ramaiya Vastavaiya’, a remake of Prabhudheva’s ‘Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana’, which also features Shruti Haasan, is a romantic film with a good dose of family drama. Not willing to stick to one genre, he said: “I want to do good scripts with good makers. There is no particular genre I am looking for specifically... talks are on for future projects. All I can say is that I want to entertain audiences and make wholesome films.” ‘Ramaiya Vastavaiya’ is slated for a July 19 release.

Sikh couple was forced to leave a movie theater in California because of wearing kirpan, a move which prompted them to seek an apology from the company - AMC Theaters - which runs the cinema complex. The AMC Theaters on the other hand has justified its decision stating that it has banned weapons of any sorts in its 347 theaters across the United States and Canada. “Our ‘no weapons’ policy prohibits guests from carrying weapons of any kind into our theaters. This national policy is for the safety and security of our guests and staff,” it said. However, undeterred, Manjot Singh, who was on a night out with his wife to watch ‘Man of Steel’ at AMC cinemas in Emeryville, California, has hired an attorney to sue the firm. “Sikhs are unfortunately often the target of ignorance and discrimination in the United States due to their unique appearance. But just like all other American citizens, Manjot Singh has the right to be treated with dignity and respect in all public accommodations,” said Manmeet Singh of the United Sikh, a Sikh advocacy group based in the US. “What happened to this couple at the AMC Theater in Emeryville - singling them out because of Manjot’s

appearance - was inexcusable, and we want to make sure that this never happens again to another Sikh patron of the AMC chain,” he said in a statement. Manjot Singh said he was forced to leave the theater on June 22, after over ten humiliating minutes of

being made to stand in the lobby. “At no time did Manjot Singh ever display his kirpan, sheathed or unsheathed,” United Sikh said, adding a demand has been made to the theater company to preserve and turn over the surveillance video from the incident, apologise to the

couple and change its discriminatory policies targeting Sikhs. In a statement, the AMC Theaters, however, said, “The person in question was approached when our security team noticed the guest was wearing an approximately 5-1/2 inch unsheathed knife, in clear vio-

lation of our rules. “We stand by our policy, as this matter is about the weapon alone and not at all about religious freedoms. The safety and security of all our guests and associates is our duty and responsibility and we take it very seriously.”

n a development that has rattled the internal security establishment, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) last month apprehended a consignment of fake Indian currency notes (FICN) being smuggled in from China. This is probably the first time that FICN pushed in by Pakistan has come via China and raises concerns of ISI’s growing

network in certain provinces of China. The Rs 30-lakh consignment was sent through an international courier from China’s Xinjiang province. The development comes close on the heels of three Chinese nationals from the same province being apprehended in Leh area of Jammu & Kashmir while trying to illegally cross over to Pakistan.

They are currently being probed by intelligence agencies in Leh. According to sources, DRI officials apprehended a courier with Rs 30 lakh in FICN addressed to an old Delhi restaurant on June 22. The courier had been summoned by a history sheeter from Hapur in UP named Bhura. Laying a trap, DRI officials arrested Bhura who revealed during

interrogation that he was receiving instructions over the phone from China itself although he did not know who the kingpin of the racket was. He was merely supposed to receive the packet and pass it on to another person about whom he would receive instructions from China. DRI has already shared the details with other security agencies

which are studying the development. After the traditional routes of Nepal, Bangladesh and Dubai came under the scanner of security agencies, FICN cartels from Pakistan had started routing fake currency through south-east Asian countries such as Malaysia and Vietnam. “However, this is probably the first time that China has become part of the FICN trail. It raises concerns as it means ISI has been able to build strong networks in certain restive provinces of China which can pose bigger challenges in future,” said an officer from the security establishment. In recent years, India’s security establishment has had considerable success in breaking down or at least pegging back FICN networks in Nepal and Bangladesh through operations by the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW) and cooperation from the two countries. However, emergence of the China route could be difficult to plug as neither does India have such strong ties with China nor do Indian agencies have a robust network there. Interestingly, it would now also be difficult to get any more information on this new network as Bhura managed escape from the custody of DRI sleuths while being taken to a court last week and is now untraceable.

Student held for ransom calls to Uttarakhand flood victims kin

A

college student who allegedly made ransom calls to families of three missing Uttarakhand flood victims was arrested in Hyderabad on Tuesday, police said.

July 2013 Edition

Sunkari Sai Charan Teja, alias Chinni, claimed the victims were in his custody and threatened to sell their kidneys if they failed to pay money, they said. Based on specific information,

sleuths of the Commissioner’s Task Force (East Zone) apprehended Chinni who made phone calls and sent SMSes to family members (based in Kerala) of the three victims, who were on a ‘Char Dham’

yatra, demanding a ransom of Rs. 75,000, they said. Chinni, studying B. Com at a local college, told the family members he would sell kidneys of the victims who he claimed were in his custody

and undergoing treatment at a city hospital, if they failed to pay up. The police have seized one cellphone and four SIM cards from Chinni’s possession. During interrogation, it came out that Chinni had incurred a debt of Rs. 33,000. As he was unable to repay the debt, Chinni sought monetary help from his friend Kiran (working in Delhi) but did not get any positive response. While in Delhi recently, Chinni had gone to Andhra Bhavan and saw an advertisement in a newspaper “requesting the readers to inform whereabouts of Anand Arunachalam, Sheela and Sowmya” who went missing in Kedarnath, police said. The youngster hatched a plan to make easy money. The family members and relatives of the victims were ready to pay the ransom amount but insisted that Chinni should e-mail photos of the victims. Chinni, instead, sent SMSes demanding money, prompting the family members to approach the police. Police also nabbed Chinni’s friend Anil Kumar who provided him the SIM cards procured on the basis of fake documents.

Is India’s suicide law being misused? in cases of abetment to suicide is abysmally low - 1-2%, Mr Tulsi says. More than 135,000 people took their lives in India in 2012 more men than women, and the majority of them married. Mr Tulsi accuses the police of abusing the law. “The law is very clear about how abetment should be defined. Unfortunately, our police are not literate enough in grasping the finer definitions of laws. The result is unnecessary harassment of people,” he says. Legal experts believe India still needs the law, considering the large number of women who still take their lives following dowry

ost were saddled with steep debts, having failed to pay back loans they had taken from banks, microfinance companies and money lenders after their crops failed. Farm suicides - nearly 300,000 since 1995 - are India’s shame, a colossal national tragedy. But, can the lenders be lawfully charged with abetting such suicides? Going by India’s laws, yes. The country’s 153-year-old penal laws say abetting suicide can fetch the offender up to 10 years in prison

and a fine. In May, Sudipta Sen, a businessman who allegedly defrauded thousands of depositors in the eastern state of West Bengal, was charged with abetting the suicide of a “depressed” investor. Jiah Khan’s mother accused Mr Pancholi of abusing her daughter So was Suraj Pancholi, who was arrested after his girlfriend, Bollywood actress Jiah Khan, killed herself last month. Mr Pancholi spent time in prison after police announced they intended to charge him with abetment. He was bailed on Monday, with the judge saying he did not appear to have a motive for inciting his girlfriend to kill herself. Tuesday’s papers reported a similar incident. The former boy-

Lawyers believe many of these convictions related to the suicide of a dowry victim were secured after proving the abetment charge. However, India possibly needs to scrap the other colonial-era law that makes it illegal to take your life. It is a crime that can fetch you a year of prison time. England scrapped a similar law in 1961, but the former colony still persists with what many believe is a retrograde measure.

friend of a film editor, who allegedly took her life, has been detained and charged with abetment of suicide in Mumbai. Reports said she had accused her boyfriend of rape and, more recently, he had called off their planned wedding. India’s Supreme Court has repeatedly said that to convict a person for abetting suicide, it has to be proved that they instigated the suicide or that “there was a clear intention to commit the offence”. “It’s not easy to prove,” leading lawyer KTS Tulsi tells me. “It’s like showing the gun, showing the poison [to the victim] and telling him or her, ‘go ahead and die’. That’s the kind of active facilitation which is not easy to prove.” No wonder the conviction rate

elhi has witnessed 806 rape cases this year until June 20, a sharp increase from 330 for the same period last year. Delhi Police statistics show that the east district is the worst offender with 122 cases, followed by the southeast district which has witnessed 106 cases and southwest that has seen 102 cases. The three districts had reported 45, 56 and 42 cases respectively last year. Asked about the reason behind the increase, Deepak Mishra, special commissioner of police (law and order), said, “The Delhi police are sensitive to crimes against women, and all police stations have been directed to register FIRs in such cases. More women are coming forward to file complaints. Over 95% cases have been solved.” The jump in the number of molestation cases is even steeper, with 1,780 cases reported in the Capital in the first six months this year against 270 for the same period last year. At 230, upmarket south Delhi has reported the highest figure, followed by west with 209 and east with 200. The three districts had witnessed 20, 25 and 35 cases respectively last year.

he district police arrested a mathematics teacher for an alleged attempt to molest a Class XII student who used to visit his place for tuition classes. An FIR was lodged and the accused was produced before the court. The teacher was staying in a rented accommodation at Mach-

chi Mohala where he took tuition classes. On an earlier occasion, he had allegedly used obscene language before the girl and after she objected, he remained silent for some days, then tried to molest her. The girl’s parents said that she had been depressed for some days and informed them only on Tuesday. “She told us that the teacher had tried to molest her on June 17. When she raised the alarm, the man panicked and fled.” “I was attending my tuition classes with my classmates. The teacher asked other students to leave but stopped me on pretext of solving a question. Then he tried to molest me,” the girl said in her statement.

23-year-old Indian student has gone missing in New Zealand, prompting police to seek help from the public to trace him. Police in Manurewa, South Auckland, said Indian national Ankur Sharma, who has been missing since June 9, arrived in New Zealand in February on a student visa. Ankur had recently obtained a work visa that was valid until March 2014, they said, adding the Indian student was last known to be living in Manurewa. Ankur was believed “now more likely to be somewhere in the Auckland City area”, the police said in a statement. Ankur’s family in India have not seen or heard from their son for several weeks and are keen to

know that he is okay, as are police, Detective Grant Arrowsmith of Manurewa police said. “At this stage police are treating this as a missing persons case and have no reason to suspect anything untoward has occurred to Ankur, but obviously we would like to hear from anyone who may have seen or heard from him so that we can reassure everyone, including his worried family, that he is okay,” he said. “Alternatively, Ankur is asked to get in touch with us directly, or anonymously with no strings attached, so that we can reassure everyone who is concerned about him that he is safe and well,” Arrowsmith said.

Apple to Build Solar Farm to Power Huge New Data Center

A

pple, which has a mixed history on environmental issues, will build a solar farm to power its data center in Washoe County, Nev. “SunPower is working with Apple to design and build this project,” Ingrid Ekstrom, spokesperson for SunPower, told TechNewsWorld. “We will be building a SunPower C7 Tracker system at the site.” The farm will reportedly generate

20 MW of electricity, some of which will be sold to Sierra Pacific Power Co., a utility operating in Nevada doing business as NV Energy. What’s Happening in Washoe County Apple is building a large data center in the Reno Technology Park, about 15 minutes east of the city of Reno. An initial building occupying about 20,000 square feet was reportedly completed in March.

That building is on an Appleowned lot of about 345 acres. When completed, the Reno facility will reportedly be Apple’s fourthlargest data center in the United States. Apple approached Sierra, aka NV Energy, in 2012 and leased from it 137 acres of land for 20 years for the purpose of building the data center, according to Bobby Hollis, NV Energy’s executive of renew-

able energy. The two companies have entered various agreements, including ground and a solar-array leases and a renewable energy agreement, Hollis said. Apple will pay for the installation and construction of the solar array. About the C7 Tracker SunPower’s C7 Tracker solar concentrators, which will be used in the solar farm, consist of a hori-

zontal single-axis tracker with rows of parabolic mirrors reflecting light onto solar cells. The C7 Tracker concentrates the sun’s energy 7 times, Ekstrom said. The C7 Tracker technology was first commercially deployed at Arizona State University’s Polytechnic campus in Mesa, Ariz., in April. Apple’s Been More Brown Than Green Apple has had a spotty record when it comes to being environmentally conscious, however. In 2011, a Greenpeace report listed Apple as being the worst environmental offender in the technology industry. That same year, a the Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs in Beijing said Apple’s Chinese suppliers were discharging polluted waste and toxic materials into surrounding communities and threatening public health. Earlier in 2011, Apple acknowledged that 137 workers at a Chinese factory near the city of Suzhou had been seriously injured by a toxic chemical used in making the iPhone’s glass screens. In 2012, Apple stopped registering its products in EPEAT, a global environmental rating system for electronic products, then reversed its decision after a public outcry. EPEAT later revised its rules affecting Apple ultrathin notebooks, drawing fire from Greenpeace.

Microsoft develops 3D touchscreen oftware giant Microsoft has reportedly developed a 3D touchscreen that shows images which can be felt and manipulated. It includes an LCD flat panel screen with force sensors and a robotic arm that moves it back and forwards and by controlling how much resistance there is to a user’s fingertip the device can simulate the shape and weight of objects shown on screen, BBC reports. According to the report, Microsoft said that the device can have both medical and gaming uses. Senior researcher Michael Pahud said that when the finger pushes on the touchscreen and the senses merge with stereo vision, if convergence is done correctly and visuals are updated constantly so that they correspond to the finger’s depth perception, it will be enough for the brain to accept the virtual world as real. The report said that the company has created a demonstration using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of a brain to show how a medic could navigate through the different slices by pushing their finger against the display allowing them to draw notes and leave a ‘haptic detent’, or force-feedback marker - at certain layers to make it easier to find them again later on. Pahud said that the ‘ haptic detent’ can be extended to flag up potential problems is encountering an anomaly like a tumour, because one can change the response based on what they touch. Dr Peter Weller, head of the Centre for Health Infomatics at City University, London, is concerned that Microsoft’s screen would not be able to give an accurate enough indication of textures because if it was going to be used in the real world it would have to respond to rapidly changing shapes. Weller further said that if technology like Tactus , which

would mean the patient could be in another country or hospital and the doctor could feel their glands or abdomen from a distance, the report added.

Ishrat was not a terrorist: CBI chargesheet

I

shrat Jahan was not a terrorist, but the three others killed along with her in a fake encounter on the outskirts of Ahmedabad nine years ago had alleged terror links, the CBI has concluded in its chargesheet to be filed in the case before the

Gujarat high court on Wednesday. The CBI has said the three Pranesh Pillai alias Javed Shaikh, Amjad Ali Rana and Zeeshan Johar - were allegedly planning attacks in Ahmedabad. It added Pranesh was using Ishrat, a

Mumbai college student, as a shield to escape detection. The four were killed in cold blood “The three men were in touch with a Pakistan-based Lashkare-Taiba handler, Muzammil. The three were identified as terror suspects by the Subsidiary Intel-

ligence Bureau during telephone interceptions. They were planning to unleash terror attacks in Ahmedabad, but Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi was not their target,” said a CBI official. The Gujarat police crime branch had claimed the four had

come to the state as part of the LeT’s plan to kill Modi. CBI investigations have revealed that Ishrat and Pranesh were on their second visit to Gujarat when they were caught at Vasad in Vadodara. The CBI chargesheet includes statements of nine police officers, who were part of the staged encounter. The statements, recorded under section 164 of CrPC in a Mumbai court, prove sequence of events in the case. A crime branch official has revealed in his statement that weapons planted on the four - an AK 47 and two 9 mm pistols - after the encounter were sourced from the IB office in Gujarat. CBI also has evidence to prove the involvement of IB joint director Rajinder Kumar in this case. A crime branch official has revealed that Kumar, along with Gujarat IPS officers DG Vanzara and PP Pandey, came to Arham Farm outside the city to question Rana. At Kotarpur waterworks, where the encounter was staged, crime branch officers had fought with each other when a police inspector and a commando refused to fire at the four. Two of their colleagues then snatched their weapons and fired at them.

Australia’s new visa restrictions to hurt Indian IT companies

A

ustralia has followed the United States and Canada in tightening up its work visa programme, hurting Indian IT firms who now cannot place workers using the visas at client sites and must advertise in Australia to prove there is a genuine skill shortage. Nomura expects the new rules to affect Indian IT companies’ time and materials contracts and increase the amount of planning and time taken to obtain a visa. The companies will have to justify the number the number of visas required and provide workers on the visas with employment terms and conditions similar to those offered to Australian workers. Infosys and Satyam, owned by Tech Mahindra, have the highest exposure to Australia, with about 8-9% of invoices coming from the continent, Nomura analyst Ashwin Mehta said in a note to clients. Tata Consultancy Services has also been dragged into a visa row in Australia. A former employee was quoted by a local TV channel ABC as saying that TCS abused that country’s work-visa scheme by not making an honest attempt to hire qualified local citizens, and instead bringing in Indian engineers on visa. TCS said those allegations were “completely false and inaccurate” and that it was fully compliant with the visa rules. Australia moves mimic similar steps in Canada. The Canadian government also requires employers to pay employees on work visas at similar levels to Canadian em-

ployees and suspended the fasttrack visa approval programme in April. The Canadian government also increased its authority to suspend or revoke work permits and significantly increased visa fees. US-headquartered IT servicing firm iGate, which receives 12% of

its revenues from the Royal Bank of Canada, will be hit by the rule changes, Nomura said. But those visa rule changes are a small matter compared to massive overhaul being contemplated in the Indian IT firms’ largest market. Last week, the United States Senate approved several provisions that

could completely change the IT firms’ business models and slash their margins. IT firms have been hoping that the US House of Representatives version omits those provisions banning outplacement and sharply higher visa costs. Nomura, which has a “reduce” target on Infosys and TCS, said

it does not see the stocks pricing the rising risks from the US bill into their valuations. The brokerage said it prefers HCL Technologies, Cognizant and Wipro on greater revenue and margins surety, less severe impact from the immigration bill and more reasonable valuations.

he month-long wait for details of actor Shah Rukh Khan’s third baby, born with the help of a surrogate mother, is over. BMC officials have received a birth report with details that a baby boy was born on May 27 to parents listed as Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Shah Rukh Khan at Masrani Hospital

Finally, BMC gets birth report of Shah Rukh’s surrogate baby

for Women in Andheri. The child was born at 34 weeks of pregnancy and weighed 1.5kg at birth, said BMC executive health officer Dr Arun Bamne. The baby was reportedly taken from Masrani to Nanavati Hospital, Juhu, and finally to Breach Candy Hospital. It is believed that the child has been discharged

from Breach Candy and is home with the Khans. On Tuesday, Bamne said, “We have received from Masrani Nursing Home a birth report, which has to be mandatorily filed by nursing homes and hospitals to register every birth in the city.” Masrani Hospital is located in Lalubhai Compound, S V Road,

Andheri (W). On the basis of this birth report the BMC has to issue a birth certificate to the parents. There are no official details about the surrogate mother, but some reports in the media had said that Gauri’s sister-in-law Namita Chibber may have been the surrogate. Khan family friends

said the surrogate mother had already flown back to London. Civic officials said the birth report was received by K-West Ward officials in June-end and was immediately sent to the head office because there was widespread controversy over whether a pre-natal sex determination test had been conducted. Reports in a section of the press had said that the baby’s gender had been known before birth, suggesting the use of sex-determination methods. While Indian guidelines for Assisted Reproductive Techniques allow the use of surrogate mothers, the Pre-Conception and PreNatal Diagnostic Techniques Act forbids testing to determine the gender of a foetus. The BMC had sent a team to Khan’s residence on June 18 to determine the facts of the case, but the actor denied the reports. “Now that we have the birth certificate, we will follow the details of the child’s journey from the nursing home to Nanavati Hospital in Juhu to Breach Candy Hospital,” said a civic official. When contacted, BMC additional municipal commissioner Manisha Mhaiskar said, “Our officials will now get back to the actor and get details about whether sex-determination tests were done in Mumbai.”

Dotcom poster boys set to steer Modi’s internet drive for 2014 election

N

arendra Modi has enlisted India’s original dotcom poster boys Rajesh Jain and BG Mahesh to drive his social media campaign in the run-up to next year’s general elections.

July 2013 Edition

Jain, who famously sold IndiaWorld to Sify for Rs 499 crore triggering a dotcom rush in the late ‘90s, and Mahesh, who founded IndiaInfo and OneIndia, are putting together a 100-member content and technology team

in Bangalore to drive Modi’s internet campaign. The 2014 Lok Sabha elections will not be the first in India’s history to be fought in the era of social media, but it will certainly be the first national-level polls to

be conducted since social media came of age. India’s more than 140 million users, which political analysts say is Modi’s core constituency, is the fastest-growing internet traffic globally. And no matter which side of the fence you’re on, there’s no getting away from the fact that Modi’s social media cache is higher than anybody else’s in the land - certainly higher than the Congress’s. In 2010, Jain’s Netcore acquired Mahesh’s Greynium Information Technologies, the owner of Indian language portals OneIndia, and classifieds business click.in and the two are using their cumulative internet and business acumen to push Modi to power. Rajesh Jain declined to comment on the story, while Mahesh could not be reached despite repeated efforts. Jain, an Indian web industry pioneer, is well-known to be a BJP supporter. “He has committed his life to the BJP. He has made all the money he wanted to, and he wants to use it to get this party to power. He is also extremely internet savvy, and if he’s driving his social media campaign, it would

not surprise me at all. Rajesh has been thinking this way since 2006, if not earlier,” says a veteran Bangalore-based writer and communications consultant, who worked with Jain in the past on a mobile solutions company. Jain and Mahesh are widely reported to have been on a recruitment drive to seed Modi’s social media campaign with relevant content. “I got a call from Mahesh a month ago asking if I want to join Modi’s social media campaign,” said a 32-year-old media consultant in Bangalore, who didn’t wish to be named. Jain’s popular blog makes no bones about his support for the party or for Modi. A post from early 2012 says: “It has to be a ‘275 election’, which means one of the national parties (Congress or the BJP) needs to get majority on its own. The approach one has to take to get to 275 is very different from trying to get to 160175 seats... At a basic level, all parties are probably similar, even as ideologies and approaches differ. What will change the discourse is the leadership the parties put on offer. In this context, I want to see how I can help the BJP get to 275.”

26. While the show was doing well in its original time slot of 8.30 pm, its ratings began dipping when it was shifted to 7.30 pm to make place for the new show, Savitri. While the channel hasn’t made any official announcement yet, sources claim that the low ratings of the show are the primary reason behind the show being axed. The makers tried every conceivable story angle to revive ratings — from creating jealousy between the sisters, Amrit and Nimrit, to having look-alikes losing their memories. These dramatic tracks were unlike Shahi’s other shows like Bidaai, Kuch Toh Log Kahenge and Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai. Rajan agrees, saying, “Amrit Manthan started off on an emotional track, but later we realised that the kind of audience the channel has, wanted more drama and spice. High voltage drama and twists then became integral part of the show, which was the opposite of my other shows.” After wrapping up this serial, the producer is planning another one for the same channel in the near future.

Sources say that Yuvika Choudhary, who was seen playing a cameo in Om Shanti Om, is likely to play the desirable

Well, the character of Draupadi is definitely going to bring a lot of prominence for the actor who bags the role. PRESCRIPTION DRUG ABUSE: A SERIOUS PROBLEM

Recreational use of prescription drugs is a serious problem with teens and young adults. National studies show that a teen is more likely to have abused a prescription drug than an illegal street drug. Many teens think prescription drugs are safe because they were prescribed by a doctor. But taking them for nonmedical use to get high or “self-medicate” can be just as dangerous and addictive as taking illegal street drugs. There are very serious health

risks in taking prescription drugs. This is why they are taken only under the care of a doctor. And even then, they have to be closely monitored to avoid addiction or other problems. Many pills look the same. It is extremely dangerous to take any pill that you are uncertain about or was not prescribed for you. People can also have different reactions to drugs due to the differences in each person’s body chemistry. A drug that was okay for one person could be very risky, even fatal, for some-

one else. Prescription drugs are only safe for the individuals who actually have the prescriptions for them and no one else. PRESCRIPTION DRUGS: WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW Due to their potential for abuse and addiction, many prescription drugs have been categorized by the US Drug Enforcement Administration in the same category as opium or cocaine. These include Ritalin and Dexedrine (stimulants), and the painkillers

OxyContin, Demerol and Roxanol. Many illegal street drugs were at one time used or prescribed by doctors or psychiatrists but were later banned when the evidence of their harmful effects could no longer be ignored. Examples are heroin, cocaine, LSD, methamphetamine and Ecstasy. Abuse of prescription drugs can be even riskier than the abuse of illegally manufactured drugs. The high potency of some of the synthetic (man-made) drugs available as prescription

drugs creates a high overdose risk. This is particularly true of OxyContin and similar painkillers, where overdose deaths more than doubled over a fiveyear period. Many people don’t realize that distributing or selling prescription drugs (other than by a doctor) is a form of drug dealing and as illegal as selling heroin or cocaine, with costly fines and jail time. When the drug dealing results in death or serious bodily injury, dealers can face life imprisonment. TYPES OF ABUSED PRESCRIPTION DRUGS Prescription drugs that are taken for recreational use include the following major categories: 1. Depressants: Often referred to as central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) depressants, these drugs slow brain function. They include sedatives (used to make a person calm and drowsy) and tranquilizers (intended to reduce tension or anxiety). 2. Opioids and morphine derivatives:1 Generally referred to as painkillers, these drugs contain opium or opium-like substances and are used to relieve pain. 3. Stimulants: A class of drugs intended to increase energy and alertness but which also increase blood pressure, heart rate and breathing. 4. Antidepressants: Psychiatric drugs that are supposed to handle depression.

the Islamic mo

Ramadan in 2013 will start on T continue for 30 days until W Ramadan (also known as Ramadhan or Ramzan) is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar. It is a period of prayer, fasting, charity-giving and self-accountability for Muslims in Australia. The first verses of the Koran (Qu’ran) were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (also written as Mohammad or Muhammed) during the last third of Ramadan, making this an especially holy period. What do people do? Many Muslims in Australia fast during the daylight hours in the month of Ramadan. Fasting during Ramadan is one of the Five Pillars (fundamental religious duties) of Islam. It is a time of self-examination and increased religious devotion. It is common to have a pre-fast meal (suhoor) before sunrise and an evening meal (iftar) after sunset during Ramadan. Some groups of people, including the chronically ill, mentally challenged, and the elderly who cannot participate due to health reasons, are exempt from fasting. It is also not allowed to have sexual relations or smoke during the day. Ramadan is also a time for many Muslims to donate to charity by participating in food drives for the poor,

organizing a collection or charity event, and other voluntary activities. They are also encouraged to read the Qur’an often during Ramadan. Some Muslims recite the entire Qur’an by the end of Ramadan through special prayers known as Tarawih, which are held in the mosques every night of the month, during which a section of the Qur’an is recited. Public life Many Islamic businesses and organizations may amend opening hours to suit prayer times during Ramadan in Australia. There may also be some congestion around mosques during prayer times, such as in the evenings. Background Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar, which consists of 12 months and lasts for about 354 days. The word “Ramadan” is derived from an Arabic word for intense heat, scorched ground and shortness of food and drink. It is considered to be the most holy and blessed month. Fighting is not allowed during this period. The month of Ramadan traditionally begins with a new moon sighting,

marking the start of the ninth month in the Islamic calendar. Many Muslims (except children, the sick and the elderly) abstain from food, drink, and certain other activities during daylight hours in Ramadan. This is considered as the holiest season in the Islamic year and commemorates the time when the Qu’ran (Islamic holy book) is said to have been revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. This occurred on Laylat Al-Qadr, one of the last 10 nights of the month. Ramadan ends when the first crescent of the new moon is sighted again, marking the new lunar month’s start. Eid-al-Fitr is the Islamic holiday that marks the end of Ramadan. Ramadan conveys an extraordinary sense of emotional enthusiasm and religious eagerness among Muslims of all ages. Even though fasting is compulsory for adults alone, children as young as eight readily watch fasting with their elders. Children look forward to the thrill of the moon sighting and eating unique meals with their relatives. Adults are grateful for the chance to double their rewards from God and ask for pardon for their past sins. Ramadan highlights Muslim brotherhood and customs and brings about a special feeling of closeness.

Hrithik and Katrina set to romance on screen again

T

he intense chemistry between Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif in their upcoming action caper Bang Bang sure seems to give the audience bang for their buck. High-voltage stunts, exotic international locales and Vishal-Shekhar’s music is expected to add to that. The film, an official Hindi remake of Hollywood hit Knight And Day, has Hrithik and Katrina filling Tom Cruise’s and Cameron

Diaz’s shoes respectively. Though many producers were waiting to cast the two together as solo leads, looks like the makers of Bang Bang managed to close the deal first with the script. And director Siddharth Anand is working to ensure that the story transforms into a riveting, breathtaking action film. Two schedules of the film are already completed and the next kickstarts this July in Europe.

The crew faced rough weather during the first schedule in Thailand, but the lead pair did manage to shoot some stunning stunt sequences there. From there, they headed to Greece for the second schedule, where a romantic sequence was filmed. The film will be shot in the Far East, Europe and India. Bang Bang, produced by Fox Star Studios, is slated for release on May 1, 2014.

Is Happiness the Goal of Life?

E

verybody wants to be happy, and that is not a sin. Even the Divine created the universe for Its Ananda. There is a happiness that we get from acquisition – be it a new dress or a new car; a happiness that comes from expression – be it through speech or painting; from creation – be it a piece of literature or music, or a baby; and from discovery – be it in science, or in spirituality. Receiving love makes us happy, and so does giving love. For some, happiness resides in the bank balance; for others, in the work-life balance. Truly, one half of the world does not understand the pleasures of the other.

July 2013 Edition

When it comes to genuine happiness, we cannot start looking for it like a commodity – it is not sold anywhere. Genuine happiness is the by-product of a life lived well, a life lived meaningfully. Genuine happiness is often called joy or delight, and differs from just happiness in being sustainable, selfreliant, and shared. The happiness that comes from fulfillment of worldly desires is a fleeting pleasure. It does not last even as long as the object of desire because, either we get tired of the object, or we develop the fear that we may lose it any moment. Everlasting happiness can come only from that which is itself ever-

lasting. That is why, it is only the love for the Divine that gives sustainable happiness. Genuine happiness is something for which the person is not dependent on anything or anybody else. So long as my happiness depends on the food I get, the clothes I wear, the car I drive, the school to which my child goes, how much I earn, how healthy I am, and how my partner behaves, most likely I will be unhappy, or under the best of circumstances, my happiness will be highly vulnerable to the vicissitudes of life. Happiness that is independent of external circumstances rests on two pillars – giving in, and giving. Giving in is surrender – surrendering personal will to the Divine will. Acceptance through surrender has three levels. The first level of surrender is to accept what has happened as an expression of divine will, and therefore beyond my control. That makes God look like a dictator, to whose immense power I have no choice but to surrender. The second level of surrender is to accept what has happened as an expression of not just the divine will but also of divine wisdom. The Divine is not only all-powerful but also all-wise. Therefore, whatever has happened must be having in it something good. If I cannot see anything good in it, it is because of my own limitations; perhaps time will show me what was good in it. The third level of surrender is to accept what has happened as an expression of not just the divine will but also of divine wisdom; and even if I cannot see everything that

is good in it, I know at least one thing that is good about it – and that is: it is for me an opportunity for spiritual growth, which is the very purpose of life. Taking this approach, which has a firm spiritual basis, an accident, an incurable illness, or a failed marriage – just about anything turns into a blessing in disguise. That is how one can achieve the samattva of the Gita, and accept victory and defeat, insult and praise, with equal delight. This delight is independent of external circumstances. What brings further joy in life is giving. All of us have something that we can give, something that somebody else needs. Some can give money or material objects; some others can give time and physical effort; yet others can give knowledge, love and care. The joy of giving not only has a superior feel as compared to the happiness of getting, it is also something that nobody can stop us from doing. We cannot force anybody to love us, but we can always love somebody. Both giving in, and giving, make us self-reliant with respect to happiness. Giving in depends on how we look at the events and circumstances of life, specially those that are considered bad. How we look at an event is a freedom that nobody can take away from us, as Victor Frankl discovered while in concentration camps set up by Hitler. Giving is also something that is in our own hands. Thus surrender and charity make us the masters of our own happiness. The choices in life that bring us

sustainable happiness that is in our own hands depend on love and compassion, and therefore, bring happiness also to others. In fact, we cannot be truly happy unless others around us are also happy, and unless we make a contribution to their happiness. As George Bernard Shaw said, “We have no more right to consume happiness without producing it than to consume wealth without producing it.” Thus, the best brand of happiness – happiness that feels the best, happiness that is not contaminated by guilt, happiness that is in our own hands – is not the goal of life. It is the by-product of a life lived with spiritual growth as its purpose. Further, modern medicine has rediscovered that the mind-body connection is so strong that if we are happy, we are also healthy. Hence, to get in life everything that we are looking for, the right sequence is to live a life full of universal and unconditional love. Happiness will follow as a by-product, which in turn will lead to better health. If that fails, as it inevitably sometimes would, the illness, even an incurable illness, will fail to take our happiness away. Like happiness, spiritual growth also follows as a by-product of a life full of love and compassion, a life characterized by giving, caring and sharing. Thus, fulfilling the purpose of life is also a by-product of a life lived well. In short, we just have to do what we should be doing, and we will get everything that we need without looking for anything. Want nothing, and get everything; be nothing, and be All.

I don’t have any stature left in Bollywood: Amitabh Bachchan “The kind of character I have been given to play believes that truth always wins. Even when he puts his views in front of everyone in the end, he says that the path to achieve everything is that of truth”. Amitabh Bachchan is in a happy phase now - on one hand, he is awaiting the release of Prakash Jha’s latest film Satyagraha Democracy Under Fire where he is playing a new age Gandhi while alongside, he is busy shooting for his TV serial. Sreya Basu chats up with the superstar on his latest projects in Mumbai

After Aarakshan in 2011, you are again working with filmmaker Prakash Jha in Satyagraha. What do you like most about him?

The best thing that happens to you when you work with Prakashji is that your Hindi becomes better ... be it the accent, vocabulary or pronunciation, everything becomes crisp.

You are playing a new age Gandhi in the film. How much can you identify yourself with your character in Satyagraha? The kind of character I have been given to play believes that truth always wins. Even when he puts his views in front of everyone in the end, he says that the path to achieve everything is that of truth. I personally also believe in this.

You seem to be very excited about your television serial. What kind of a show will it be?

I don’t think I am allowed to divulge details right now. All I can say is, there are many serials running across the channels and they are very successful. We appreciate that. But we wanted to present a different kind of a story to the viewers.

Were you apprehensive before saying ‘yes’ to the project?

There are always pressures, anxieties and dangers when you set out to do something new. I too had many debates and discussions for almost six months before coming to an affirmative decision.

What was that one thing that convinced you to do a fiction?

(Jokingly) I was not getting enough work in the film industry. So I thought why not try my luck in the television world.

Being the megastar of Bollywood, don’t you think acting in soaps will reduce your stature?

People keep telling me that you make decisions on your own and you are reducing yourself from the 70 mm screen to something 25 inches. They say that will reduce my stature. But you know, I am going to be 71 in a couple of months. So I don’t have any stature left and it will be wise to do things that I have not done so far.

But you are Amitabh Bachchan.

I am just another human being. I am an actor by profession and hence I am most of the times projected as something larger than life.

At 70, how many hours can you work at a stretch without getting bored?

I can give 18 hours a day. I am ready to work as much and as long I am required. And I have never been bored in the last 45 years.

Do new projects still excite you?

I see every day as a challenge. I see my every new project as a challenge, a new opportunity. I still feel nervous when I go to the sets. I still feel that urge to give my best shot to every project. www.indian-times.com.au

Yes, we will be working together soon.” Sanjay Leela Bhansali, in whose Guzaarish, Aditya played a fey characters is also delighted by Aditya’s sudden stardom. “I felt his tremendous potential during the shooting of Guzaarish. S

uddenly, Aditya Roy Kapur is all over the place. That’s what one Friday does to actors. Having failed to make any impact in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Guzaarish and Vipul Shah’s London Dreams and Action Replayy, suddenly Aditya is the flavour of the season with two back-to-back blockbusters Aashiqui 2 and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, both turning the young Kapoor into one of the most saleable actors in Bollywood. The process of rediscovering Aditya Roy Kapur has begun in right earnest. One now hears that a sleeper Hindi-Tamil-Telugu project with Aditya in the lead that was designed to launch the Southern hottie Samantha Ruth Prabhu in Hindi would be revived and released. The action-adventurecomedy entitled Assi Nabbe Poore Sau in Hindi stars Aditya in only the Hindi version. Jeeva and Nani star in the Tamil and Telugu versions of the film. Samantha is common to all three versions of the film. Says a source from the Tamil film industry, “With the miserable flopping of

lyrics penned by Panchi Jalonvi. BOYSS TOH BOYSS HAIN is a story of four youths grappling with their own unique situations that make their life a thrilling roller coaster ride. From impotency to socially dysfunctional girlfriends and from selling sex to fending off materialistic parents and eventually a rape charge, this not-so-awesome foursome live through the most hilarious, embarrassing and even thoughtprovoking moments onscreen. With an ensemble cast, this slice of life film is the season’s most rib-tickling laugh riot. BOYSS TOH BOYSS HAIN will leave you wondering if boys ever evolve into men...!

Aarya Kumar plays Atal Bihari in BOYSS TOH BOYSS HAIN Well we are not referring to the popular BJP leader and former prime minister, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee ji here, as you may have thought so. The similarity lies only in the name and nothing beyond it. Actually, the name of Aarya’s character in the upcoming film

BOYSS TOH BOYSS HAIN, with which he makes his Bollywood debut, sounds quite same. Aarya plays the character called Atal Bihari Bakshi in this all-male outing, who believes in honesty, being truthful & giving utmost priority to principles and ideals in life. And this trait of his leads him into problems and puts him in trouble every time. His straight-forward behaviour, outspoken nature gets misinterpreted.

Says Aarya, ‘’Yes BOYSS TOH BOYSS HAIN is my first film. I play the character by the name Atal Bihari Bakshi, who is extremely honest and follows his principles ardently. Galat jagah sahi cheez bol dena aur sahi jagah galat is wajah se uske bante kaam bigad jaate hai. The biggest of the tasks get stuck because of his straight-forward behaviour, and outspoken nature.’’

Sources say while shooting for the film, the star was in such intense pain that he had to sit down on the ground in order to rehearse his dance steps. An insider says, `SRK’s pain was unbearable. The title track of

the film had several elaborate dance steps and a meeting was scheduled to discuss the it.` Apparently, the film’s crew was aghast at Shah Rukh’s discomfort but the star would have nothing of it.

`He put his foot down and said nothing would stop him from practising his moves. Often, he would be in so much pain that he had to sit on the floor and rehearse his steps,` adds a source.

I love getting into new looks every time: Vidya Balan

V

idya Balan is often praised for her acting skills and is not one to fear experimenting with her looks. She says the right combination of makeup, hair, clothes and body language is very important for an actor. “Makeup, hair, clothes, body language, accessories and accent are the important tools of an actor. If you’re able to create a different

person using all these tools, then that’s the joy. I’m glad I’m getting the opportunities to play different people on-screen, and I want to make the most of it,” Vidya said in an interview. If in “Kahaani”, Vidya sported a faux baby bump, she flaunted a geeky and simple kurta-clad look in “No One Killed Jessica”. In “The Dirty Picture” blockbuster, the actress didn’t shy away from

cleavage-baring blouses and several sensuous outfits; neither did she care about critics when she stepped into bold and bright colours with polka dots, floral prints on kurtas and short maxi dresses, teamed with big headbands, for her latest release “Ghanchakkar”. “I love getting into new looks every time. It’s always enjoyable,” said the 35-year-old. Vidya also doesn’t mind step-

ping out in her movies’ looks during the promotions. She says it only helps the film. “During promotions, if you get into that specific look, it’s so much fun! It’s so boring to wear casual outfits (for events). Also, we start promoting the film at least one month before its release. People see the trailers, and when you appear in front of them in that particular look, it derives a connect

with the character or film,” she explained. In recent years, Vidya has come out with flying colours with hits like “Paa” and “Ishqiya” and won due recognition for her work. But, initially, she braved criticism for her roles and costumes in various movies and public appearances. “It hurts,” admited Vidya. But she believes in taking it all in stride. “Yes I was disappointed. It hurts at that point of time. But it’s always better to move on and learn from it. There was a lot written in the media, but you can’t blame one person because you don’t know who has criticised you and who has praised you. It doesn’t matter to me any more,” she added. After “ Ghanchakkar”, Vidya will next be seen in romantic-comedy “Shaadi Ke Side Effects”, where she is paired with Farhan Akhtar. On a lighter note, when asked about the real life “shaadi ke side effects” on her, Vidya, who is married to Siddharth Roy Kapur, smiled, winked and said: “Oh! I am still in my honeymoon period.” “I’m enjoying living with Siddharth, but, yes, I have to take care of the house also. Like sometimes, my cook calls and asks about the food or my maid calls and asks for an off. I was not used to all this earlier. But, yes, life has changed and I’m enjoying the process of discovering myself and my partner,” she said. So far, she says, she has been able to strike a balance between her personal and professional life well.

So far the actor has been part of 50 movies, including hits like “Yuva”, “Dhoom”, “Bunty Aur Bubli” and “Bol Bachchan”. “13 years and just about 50 films, not bad! It’s been a lot of fun. But not as much fun and promise that the coming year these hold,” he posted. ctor Abhishek Bachchan took a ride down memory lane and recalled his first release “Refugee”, the buzz around his debut movie and the nervousness that he felt at its premiere 13 years ago. The 37-year-old made his debut with J.P. Dutta’s 2000 movie “Refugee”, which also marked Kareena Kapoor’s entry into filmdom. “So, it’s been 13 years to the day since my 1st film ‘Refugee’ released - 30th June, 2000. aanjhanaa is a hit and for Sonam Kapoor, there is finally a biggie against her name. With I Hate Luv Storys being her last major success, there was a lull period of three years with Aisha being the only moderate runner. Now that Raanjhanaa has not just been a commercial success, but also fetched Sonam quite some appreciation, industry in general has managed to gain some more options at least. “For last so many years, if at all there was a requirement for a young leading lady who wasn’t over exposed yet, the top choices were Deepika Padukone, Anushka Sharma or Sonakshi Sinha. There was just no youngster available and this is the reason why Deepika and Sonakshi are being seen in three-four films a year with Anushka following suit,” says an insider. With Kareena Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Vidya Balan and Priyanka Chopra being around for close to a decade each and also in a league of their own, the slots were wide open for younger heroines. “Sonam could have fitted in well but then a slew of unsuccessful films in the form of Mausam, Thank You and Players turned out to be a spanner in her plans,” says a film-

maker, “Not that there was a dearth of offers for her. However she too decided to lie low and instead of just opting for a big banner, big hero and a big director, she waited for a correct film that brought her credibility as an actor.” In case of Raanjhanaa, banner was not a problem as Eros had promised to pitch the film well. However, Aanand L Rai was still getting into the big league after scoring quite well in Tanu Weds Manu and Dhanush was making his debut in Bollywood after proving his mettle down South. It was a big gamble that she played and it paid off. This has pretty much turned out to be a win-win situation for all. So while Sonam can now breathe easy and pick up films of her choice, the pool has increased for her as well since filmmakers aren’t reaching out to her with frivolous parts. “There is someone beyond Deepikas, Anushkas and Sonakshis to look forward to,” adds a source, “Let us not forget that Sonam isn’t a newbie either. She came on the same day as Deepika; remember the infamous clash of Saawariya and Om Shanti Om? It was a matter of time before she proved her mettle. She can resume her innings now.”

bollywood music Music Review :

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag

T

he music of Rakesh Omprakash Mehra’s “Bhaag Milkha Bhaag” has eight tracks, including a Gurbani rendition. While a lot of the songs are inclined towards fun and passion, the romantic tracks also manage to steal a bit of limelight in the album. The album starts with a “Gurbani”, soulfully rendered by Daler Mehndi to create a mood of peace. “Zinda”, sung by multiple singers like Suhas Sawant, Raman Mahadevan, Mani Mahadevan and Siddharth Mahadevan, has an inspiring passion and intensity. The guitar riffs at the song’s beginning are impressive, while the background music along with tough lyrics make the song very encouraging. From hard rock music in the background, the song gradually takes a turn towards a soft, smooth melody. Javed Bashir has sung the next track “Mera Yaar” beautifully. Unlike usual romantic numbers, this one stands apart with Sufi music blended into the melody seamlessly. The lyrics prove to be a rare phenomenon with poetry being given a lot of space and the track is one of the high points of the album. “Maston ka jhund” has already become the favourite of many youngsters. With singer Divya Kumar crooning in the track, it can be easily tagged as a boys’ number. The beats are rhythmic and foot tapping. “Bhaag milkha bhaag”, the title track ofSonu the Nighm movie, is a little

disappointing. Even though the lyrics are very powerful, the regular pace of the song makes it a little uninteresting for the listener. While singer Arif Lohar’s voice is a treat for everyone, the listener keeps on waiting for a high adrenaline rushing twist, which never comes. The rock version of title track makes up for the missing element in the previous number. Sung by Siddharth Mahadevan, it is really hard-hitting and inspirational.

Not just the singer’s voice but the music also compliments the feel of the track. A very good hear. If there is one song in the album, which can be termed as simply “amazing”, it is “Slow motion angreza”. The song begins with singer Loy Mendosa singing in English. It has the style of country singing and is very catchy. The best part comes when Sukhwinder Singh comes behind the mike. His entry is commendable and is sure to

have the listeners hooked on to it. The last track is “O Rangrez”, which again has an ensemble of singers like Arshad Khan, Israj Khan, Tapas Roy, Vajid Ali, Yusuf Mohammed, Javed Bashir and Shreya Ghoshal contributing to the song. A romantic number, it also has some spiritual essence attached to its music. This is the only slow paced song in the album and has very beautiful lyrics. A listener might not be

able to get attached to the rhythm initially, but it gradually grows on you. The beauty of the track might not be appealing to all as it is a low profiled song. Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy have tried to infuse life and story in every track. While the tracks, which are peppy, score high, certain tracks may fail to meet expectations of the listeners. But, nonetheless, the music of “Bhaag Milkha Bhaag” does not disappoint.

n theory Qantas and Virgin Australia should be pushing each other out of the way to do a deal with Air-India to be its code share partner when it begins daily 787-8 services through a triangular this-way-that-way schedule that will link New Delhi non-stop to either Sydney or Melbourne and in either direction depending on the day of the week from 30-31 August. Yes, it is a bit quaint and very 90s when it comes to presenting potential travellers with a schedule like that, but, if it happens, it will be Australia’s first scheduled 787 operation. It has also taken Melbourne Airport two days to issue a congratulatory press release about Air-India flying to Victoria, and none has yet been issued by Sydney Airport. Maybe both airport managements were pinching themselves to make sure it was for real, since it was also for real, for September last year, in May last year. As a report has already noted, the Qantas code share partner in India is Jet Airways, which doesn’t fly to Australia and apparently has no immediate intention of so doing. And although the deal is currently in a state of suspension pending resolution of whatever is holding it up in India, Virgin Australia equity holding alliance partner, Etihad, is trying to finalise a 24% stake in Jet. Nevetheless Qantas hasn’t yet ditched

July 2013 Edition

Jet in favour of Air-India, and if Jet isn’t going to fly here, then presumably Virgin Australia would be mindful of the advantage of being able to offer code-shared non-stop flights to New Delhi rather than over Singapore through the services of another of its equity and alliance partners Singapore Airlines. India is of immense importance to Australia’s trade, tourism and foreign student interests. Non-stop flights to one of India’s major cities are clearly highly desirable, notwithstanding its reputation for seeking to negotiate tough, complex and difficult aviation agreements. There are other strategic issues for any players in the India-Australia aviation market. While New Delhi and Mumbai are the major centres of interest and for connections in India, the rise of centres like Bangalore mean that at the moment, Singapore Airlines has the ball park well covered when it comes to non-stop services using its own or its SilkAir subsidiary services from its Changi hub, which of course is connected to a multitude of nonstop flights to all the major Australian cities except Canberra, in fact, as of today, 121 times a week. The 787 is very right sized for doing all of the important centres in India from all of the gateways in Australia non-stop. So AirIndia is onto something. All it needs now is a dance partner in this country.

project. We will lend our expertise in finding a sustainable and viable solution to safe disposal of waste discharged by tanneries,” CEO of Sustainability Victoria, Stan Krpan said during a visit to the city. Funded through the Australian development ‘AusAID’, the project aims to clean the river that is one of the five most polluted rivers in the world today. Krpan said that experts from the agency would explore social, environmental and technical solutions for Kanpur’s tannery industry to provide it a sustainable basis. “We will prepare a road map for the tannery industry by looking at all angles including finding a technical solution for waste management, community engagement for saving the river and regulatory issues as well,” the official said. It is envisaged that successful outcomes of this work in Kanpur will be replicated in other parts of the Ganga basin. Under extreme pollution pressure, the Ganga river faces significant threats to its biodiversity, environmental sustainability, and both the quantity and quality of its flow.

or someone who started his career with television, this could be a return to home ground, except in a much bigger way. Anurag Basu, who made his directorial debut with ‘Tara’, one of the longest running soap operas on TV, has now acquired the rights of the very popular American TV series, Prison Break. Sources close to Basu revealed that Brett Ratner, executive producer of the American series, who also directed its pilot episode, was instrumental in facilitating the deal that was signed a few months ago. Basu will come on board of the Indian version of the hit show not just as co-producer but also as creative director. The desi version will be aired on a leading TV channel, details of which are being kept strictly under wraps. Incidentally, Ratner was Basu’s editor for the international version of his 2010 film Kites starring Hrithik Roshan and Barbara Mori in lead roles. Prison Break revolves round two brothers, one of whom has been sentenced to death for a crime he did not commit even as the other hatches an elaborate plan to help his sibling escape the gallows. Dominic Purcell and Wentworth Miller play the duo in Prison Break which won the 2006 People’s Choice Award for Favourite New TV Drama and was nominated for several awards, including the 2005 Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series Drama.

T

he makers of the docu-drama on Salman Khan and Sanjay Dutt, Munna Bhai Sallu Bhai – Killers or Healers?, are now conducting a four-city hunt for actors who can play the reel-life celebs in it. “Physique is always an important factor because a brawny image comes to mind first when they are mentioned. We have conducted auditions in Mumbai and will soon be in Delhi for two days,” says Muazzam Beg, who conceptualised and is directing this docu-drama. In the past, Muazzam wrote the script for Rockstar (2011) and wrote and directed Sadda Adda (2011). The makers are looking for fresh faces and after wrapping up the Delhi auditions, will visit Chandigarh as well. “Apart from the two leading men, we

are also looking for two girls- one to play the lead opposite Salman while the other will play a Facebook fan of the actor’s,” says Muazzam, whose last stop for auditions is Pune. Once they are done with the four-city auditions, all the shortlisted actors will be called to Mumbai for the next round. “We have some plans for the shortlisted actors before we zero in on the final protagonists. We are still in the planning stage and will be able to talk only once we lock our plans,” he says. The film intends to show Salman and Sanjay’s journey — both personal and professional. To be made on a tight budget, Muazzam will start the film in mid-July and release it in December.

Four-city hunt for Salman Khan, Sanjay Dutt

Shahid and Saif Ali Khan’s awkward moment

I

t is not surprising that Saif Ali Khan and Shahid Kapoor have nothing to say to each other. Considering their past history — Kareena ended her relationship with Shahid to get into one with Saif — it is understandable that her men really have no interest in even

being polite to each other. But recently, the two found themselves face-to-face at a suburban gymnasium, and guess what? Onlookers say they stared hard at each other and then moved on. They may well have been strangers.

Gossips don’t affect me now: Ranveer Singh

anveer Singh, who has been away from silver screen for past few months have five releases in 2013 and 2014. The actor is excited about the coming year and claims that he has been fortunate that people remember him and want to see his upcoming film Lootera. “Fortunately for me people remember me and people are looking forward to Lootera. For me it’s very different to come after 19 months and still they have not forgotten me. The gap is not a good thing, but hopefully this year will be good,” said Ranveer. On being asked about his way to deal with rumours, he said, “There was a time when it used to affect me a lot and I used to think about it. Later, rumours and gossips started coming on regular intervals. Now, I don’t read stories about me and they don’t affect me now. When I entered Bollywood I used to be affected a lot.” “Industry is the same towards me. Everyone is nice to me and they haven’t change. Fortunately, for me people didn’t change accordingly to my success or failure,” concluded Ranveer.

pproaching her 18th birthday, a “more aggressive” PV Sindhu has her eyes trained on the upcoming World Championships, though she says defence is something that needs fine-tuning. “My sytle of play is more aggressive now though I am working on my defence,” Sindhu said. “I am looking forward to doing well in the Championship,” said the shuttler from Hyderabad who is just one shy of breaking into the top-10 world rankings for the first time in her career. The World Championships is slated to be held in Guangzhou, China from August 5 to 11. Sindhu, who will be turning a year older on July 5, said she missed a couple of tournaments this year in order to give her injured knee time to heal. “I missed two tournaments (Thailand and Indonesia) due to my knee injury. I don’t want to aggravate it just to get fit for the prestigious World Championship,” she said during the PSPB awards ceremony. Sindhu had won the Malaysian Open and reached the semifinals of India Open this year. Doubles specialist Jwala Gutta, who is returning from an injury layoff, said it will take some time before results start to come. “It will take some time before results start to come. I am making a comeback after a six-month

injury layoff and it will take some time for me before getting back to the rhythm. At the moment, I am fit,” Jwala said. Asked about the upcoming World Championship, Jwala said, “I won’t be playing in it. I have changed my playing partner and my entry for the championship was with (V) Diju. But I am partnering someone else.” It may be noted that Jwala has decided to partner Prajakta Sawant and Manu Atri for future tournaments. Also she doesn’t have enough ranking points to qualify for the championship as her injury has affected her world ranking. On the occasion, www.pspb.in website was launched for the Petroleum Sports Promotion Board employed sportspersons who can keep a track of their progress and also know about future events. Asked about the upcoming IBL, Jwala said, “I am very excited about it. The auction is happening on July 19 and I am looking forward to it.” BC Tripathi, PSPB president and GAIL chairman said, “PSPB supports over 600 sportspersons in 15 disciplines. We have always taken pride in supporting the spirit of sportspersons. We are happy to recognise the efforts of our athletes and honouring them for their achievements for the last three years. We will continue to support them,” he said. Saina Nehwal, Gautam Gambhir

Resurgent Brazil a real threat at World Cup

I

t’s time to take Brazil seriously. In winning the Confederations Cup by inflicting a rare defeat on world champions Spain, the hosts have earned the respect of fans and rivals. They may have often flattered to deceive - remember they won the previous two Confed Cups too - but the manner of their triumph

July 2013 Edition

this year seems to suggest they may be rewriting history at the Maracana again, exactly a year from now. On Sunday night, Brazil played with a focus, intensity and freedom that had been elusive for years. They had entered the 2014 World Cup warm-up tournament after a lacklustre run of results and

jeered by their own fans. Before the event, Brazil had plummeted to No. 22 in FIFA’s rankings, but ‘Big Phil’ Scolari’s men scripted a fine turnaround and capped it off with the convincing 3-0 win over ‘the best team in the world’. Epitomizing Brazil’s upturn has been Neymar, the Golden Ball winner turning in a series of

performances to match the hype. Having been handed Pele’s No. 10 jersey, the new Barcelona recruit answered his critics in the best possible manner - with four goals, a brilliant assist and dazzling performances. Adding edge to the attack is Fred, who scored twice in the final. Going into this calendar year,

Fred had scored seven times in 19 appearances for Brazil. In 2013, under Scolari, he has added nine goals in just 10 games. The back four of Dani Alves, Thiago Silva, David Luiz - who made an incredible last-ditch goal-line clearance at a crucial time in the final - and Marcelo provide the sinewy strength. Downplaying expectations is the biggest challenge now. Looking at Spain, one may be tempted to say that this is the end of tiki-taka. Hassled and harried by Brazil, their pattern seemed disrupted and the hosts’ cutting edge took them apart. The signs could be seen in the semifinal against Italy where the Azzurri probably missed the skills of the mercurial Mario Balotelli. Spain are missing the ‘confident’ old David Villa and a relaxed Xavi; they certainly lack a freshness of ideas. Turn the page to Barcelona’s 7-0 aggregate loss to Champions League winners Bayern Munich... and you get the drift. Still, write them off at your own peril although top teams know how to play them, tactically. Boring, they said, but Spain still won the Euro last year. The World Cup is a year away, and it promises to be an exciting one. Brazil may lack the depth of Germany or Spain to last a month-long tournament but anything is possible.

Rayudu to replace Dhoni in Tri-series

O

ne man’s pain can be another man’s gain. The hamstring injury to skipper MS Dhoni during the on-going Tri-Nation ODI series in the West

Indies has opened the doors for Ambati Rayudu. This is the second time that Rayudu has been named as a replacement for an injured player.

He had got his first national call for the T20 series against England in December last year as a replacement for Manoj Tiwary but didn’t get to make his debut. He was

also among the 30 probables for the World T20 tournament earlier that year but had failed to make the cut. The talented right-handed bats-

man has had a relatively calm IPL this year - 265 runs in 19 matches but scored when it mattered most. “I am very excited about the prospect of donning the National colours. It has come as a surprise to me,” said the 27-year-old Rayudu, who was in a theatre watching a Telugu movie. “It is very unfortunate that Dhoni has suffered an injury. It is not the best of circumstances to get a call but I look forward to the series,” Rayudu added. Rayudu, who for long has been touted as an India prospect, has had many ups and downs in his career and at one point of time looked as if he had missed the bus. But his IPL stint for the Mumbai Indians revived his career and brought him back into the National contention. Rayudu followed it up with some good performances for Baroda for whom he has been playing since making a comeback to the BCCI fold. The likes of Suresh Raina, Robin Uthappa, Irfan Pathan, RP Singh, Dinesh Karthik and Shikhar Dhawan had played under the captaincy of Rayudu at the under-19 level. But a series of off-the-field happenings ensured that Rayudu was consigned to the back bench while the others went on to play for the country.

ccording to Ayurvedic Medicine the human body is body made up three constitutions, which is also called as Basic Humors called Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Among them Kapha dosha is responsible for overweight and Obesity. In Ayurveda this is consider as “Sthulya”. For weight reduction one should always look for the diet and lifestyle activities which can able to reduce Kapha. It is better to address the weight loss through Panchakarma methods which will be more beneficial. Ayurveda teaches that the balance of three subtle energies, known as Vata, Pitta and Kapha, maintains health. Kapha is responsible for strength and immunity. It also provides the basic substratum to all the tissues of the body. Biological fire humor or Pitta is responsible for digestion and metabolism and biological air humor or vata is responsible for all the movements- gross and subtle in the body. In order to balance these subtle energies, it is first important to identify the dosha which is in imbalanced, and then accordingly select the Panchakarma therapy to treat the condition from roots. The general diet composition for reducing Kapha would require the following things: ➢ Small quantities more number of times

cientists are ultimately searching for new ways to treat diet-related disorders while raising awareness that diet and obesity affect mental as well as physical health. Being obese appears to affect cognitive function, requiring

Men, women emotionally A cooperate with each other

July 2013 Edition

new study has revealed that while men tend to match their partner’s emotions during mutual cooperation, women may have the opposite response. Cooperation is essential in any successful romantic relationship, but how men and women experience cooperation emotionally may be quite different, according to new research conducted at the University of Arizona. Ashley Randall, a postdoctoral research associate in the UA’s John and Doris Norton School of Family and Consumer Sciences and the UA’s department of psychiatry, has been interested for some time in how romantic partners’ emotions become coordinated with one another. For example, if someone comes home from work in a bad mood we know their partner’s mood might plummet as well, but what are the longterm implications of this on their relationship? Randall wondered how the act of cooperating, a beneficial relationship process, might impact emotional coordination between partners. “Cooperation - having the ability to work things out with your partner, while achieving

function, an animal study by an Indian origin scientist Rahul Agrawal reported that a highsugar diet may affect insulin receptors in the brain and dull spatial learning and memory skills. But omega-3 supplements may at least partially offset this effect. Evidence from a rat study suggests that a new compound under development to treat compulsive eating disorders and obesity may be effective at blocking a specific receptor in the brain that triggers food cravings and eating when activated by “food related cues,” such as pictures or smells, irrespective of the body’s energy needs, according to Chiara Giuliano. The findings were presented at Neuroscience 2012, the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience and the world’s largest source of emerging news about brain science and health. “These are fascinating studies because they show the brain is an often overlooked yet significant organ in an array of dietary disorders,” said press conference moderator Paul Kenny, PhD, of The Scripps Research Institute in Florida, an expert on addiction and obesity. “Many of these findings have the potential to lead to new interventions that can help reduce the ranks of the obese, helping those who struggle daily with dietary decisions reassert control over what they eat,” Kenny added.

How diet affects the way we think

mutually beneficial outcomes is so important in relationships, and I wondered what kind of emotional connectivity comes from cooperating with your partner?” she said. What she found in her recent study were surprising gender differences. She and her colleagues found that during high mutual levels of cooperation with a romantic partner, men typically experience an “inphase” response to their significant other’s emotions. That is, if the woman in the relationship is feeling more positive, the man will feel more positive. If she feels less positive, he will feel less positive. On the contrary, it seems women experience more of an “antiphase” pattern during high mutual cooperation. If her partner is feeling more positive, she will tend to feel less positive, and vice versa. Social psychology literature on cooperation tells us that women generally tend to cooperate more, while men often try to avoid conflict. Thus, men might be subconsciously syncing their emotions with their partners’ during cooperation in an effort to avoid conflict or reach a speedy resolution, Randall said.

Is your doctor helpless when it comes to your hormones?

I

f you’re suffering from hormonal imbalance, your symptoms can be confusing, overwhelming — even scary at times. You would probably be glad to have a doctor who understands and can fix everything. Unfortunately, many women still tell us how difficult it is to find a physician who understands women’s hormonal issues — before, during and after menopause. When it comes to feeling better and taking control of your health, you — and your doctor — should feel hopeful rather than helpless. To help you sort through your options, it’s important to understand what you can and can’t expect from conventional healthcare providers when it comes to your hormonal health.

Why the conventional approach is ill-suited to hormonal imbalance

just as every woman is unique, so is her hormonal balance. Understanding and effectively treating hormonal imbalances requires a whole-body approach, rather than looking at your health as a set of independent issues. This is especially true with hormones, which are all interrelated. As a result, an imbalance in one can lead to a series of other prob-

lems, including weight gain, irritability, lack of libido and more serious health issues. The holistic approach we have advocated for so many years is very different from what you’ll see in today’s medical system, which at times can seem hopelessly out of touch with the care that real women need. Here are just a few examples:

Medical practitioners may still regard menopause as a disease that they need to treat, manage, or “fix.” This perspective can make it difficult to discuss concerns about menopause, which is much more complicated than simply resolving one issue. Managed care and financial considerations have forced some practices to rely on yes/no lab

tests and 6-minute office visits, rather than allow the holistic approach to tests and diagnosis that is necessary to understand the complexity of hormonal imbalance. We still hear the myth that because women’s hormones fluctuate unpredictably, even wildly, they can’t be understood or diagnosed. This is probably left over from the past (hopefully!), when anything considered a “female complaint” was dismissed out of hand. Conventional doctors may have limited or out-of-date training in endocrinology (unless this is their chosen field), and are unlikely to have kept up to date on the latest science on hormonal balance.

The impact on you

For one or many of the reasons above, your practitioner may not have the time, interest or ability to guide you through the complexities of your individual situation. In fact, many conventional practitioners focus on your estrogen levels. But fluctuations in progesterone and testosterone also cause

symptoms of hormonal imbalance, as do unusual ratios between all of your sex hormones. Finally, insulin levels, thyroid function and your adrenal health are related to your sex hormones too. No wonder the “one size fits all approach” such as hormone replacement therapy (HRT) or antidepressants usually isn’t your best option to resolve symptoms of hormonal imbalance! We believe that starting with the least invasive method makes the most sense for almost all women. Our philosophy is that you are the expert when it comes to your body, and that with our approach you can naturally guide your body back into balance so you’ll experience relief from all your symptoms – along with many other health benefits! If you don’t feel like you’re getting the care you want from your doctor, don’t be afraid to look for a new one who takes a more open approach to holistic solutions to hormonal imbalance. Having a trusted medical partner will make all the difference in finding the solutions that are right for you.

ddition of chicken in teenagers’ diet will help reduce their risk of developing colon cancer, a new study has suggested. The study of about 20,000 women, found women who consumed more chicken when they were teens had lower risks of suffering from colorectal adenomas benign tumours, which may progress into colon cancer. The researchers found that substituting one serving per day of red meat with a serving of chicken or fish could reduce

rectal and advanced adenomas’ risk by about 40 per cent. Researchers wrote in their study that Colorectal carcinogenesis is a long process which may take several decades, and the initial steps of carcinogenesis could occur at young ages. 19,771 women in the age group of 34 51 gave answered questions about their diet when they were teenagers and over 10 years, 1,494 of women were found to be suffering from colorectal adenomas of which 305 were in an advanced stage.
