SRCC boy held for Ramjas admission scams

A

second-year SRCC student is among four persons arrested for their alleged role in the Ramjas College admission scam, opening the possibility that similar rackets had taken place other colleges of Delhi

University. The student, Sahil Gulati, was in BCom (H) at SRCC, a most sought-after course in DU. He was erroneously identified as a Ramjas student in TOI’s report on December 12. The others arrested

are Mukul, a 2nd-year Ramjas student, Sanchit, an ex-Ramjas student and Rahul, owner of a cyber cafe where marksheets were forged. Police have expanded their probe beyond Ramjas College after

the arrest of a second-year SRCC student in the fake marksheet scam. But what’s shocking is that the racket was actually fuelled by unreasonably high cut-offs coupled with cut-throat competition to get into top colleges.

GMAT to debut with new format in June 2012

B

ANGALORE: If you want to ace GMAT - the key to the world’s best B-schools - it’s time you start honing your visual interpretation, too. The Graduate Management Admission Council announced the components of the new format which will debut in the June 2012 NextGen GMAT. The new section, named Integrated Reasoning, will have four basic formats. Graphic interpretation will be a multiplechoice question based on images. Multiple-source reasoning will have questions from the same data. Table analysis will be based on tables which can be sorted in various ways. Also, for the first time, GMAT will provide candidates an on-screen calculator. This will be only for the fourth format called two-part analysis. The new section will be for 30 minutes and consist of 12 questions. However, the time for the exam will remain the same (3 hours, 30 minutes) and so will the total scores. The new section will be incorporated by dropping an essay from the analytical writing assessment. So far, students had to write an essay and analyse an argument. The latter has been retained. The length of the two other sections - verbal and quantitative sections - stays as it is.

High drama over last rites of twice-married man in Godhra

With the first wife of the man being a Hindu and the second being a Christian, both families demanded that the rituals be performed as per their religions

T

he final rites of a man who had married twice raked up a major controversy at Godhra. With the first wife of the man being a Hindu and the second being a Christian, both families demanded that the rituals be performed as per their religions. The matter was eventually sorted out only late on Monday afternoon even as he had died on Sunday evening. High drama took place

over the issue and the matter reached the police with both sides demanding that the rituals must be performed according to the faith they followed. They even tried to convince the police through documents in their possession to prove that the deceased Rajendra Katariya followed their faith. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), too, took up the issue demanding that the last rites should be conducted as

per Hindu rituals. The matter was even taken to the Godhra police and senior police officers were approached by his both wives and their relatives. At one stage, some even demanded that the body be sent to the cold room till a final decision was reached after a court was approached. Katariya had died due to a heart attack on Sunday evening at the Godhra civil hospital. His body was taken by his second wife Sangita to her residence in the night, but his first wife Pushpa and her kids demanded that it be handed over to them. Godhra police faced a daunting task till late on Monday afternoon as none of the sides was willing to step down from the stance they had taken. Eventually, it was Sangita who softened her stance after convincing from some community members. “It was agreed that some rituals would be performed as per Christianity and the body would then be handed over to Pushpa and her kin. Katariya will be cremated soon as per Hindu rituals,” said Godhra town police inspector D M Parghi late on Saturday evening.

10 years on, survivors ask why attackers not hanged

It’s has been ten years since that bloody December 13 evening which nearly brought two nuclear powers to the brink of a war and can only be perhaps eclipsed by the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai. Yet for all those who were part of the anti-terror operations - and specially those who lost their kin - in the deadly attack can hardly forget the day. For a few, several acts by the successive governments - including the clemency plea

of Afzal Guru adopted by the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly has only added to their pain. But most others are happy to be alive; most claiming the enormity of the attack struck only hours after the operation was over. Even as the All India Anti-Terrorist Front led by M S Bitta will be meeting on Tuesday to submit a memorandum to the President of India demanding special terrorist courts to ensure speedy trials.

Rupee hits new record low of 52.77 per dollar The rupee slid to a record low of 52.77 on Monday as signs of a sharp slowdown in Asia’s third-largest economy prompted investors to buy dollars. Traders said possible buying by local oil importers, the biggest

buyers of dollars in the local forex market, also pressured the currency. At 4:53 pm , the partially convertible rupee was at 52.76 per dollar, after closing at 52.03/04 on Friday.

Rahul seeks to ‘Large parts of Mars are habitable’ storm Mulayam’s bastion R

ahul Gandhi will kick up dust in Uttar Pradesh afresh, taking his campaign for Congress revival to the OBC-Muslim stronghold in the central region, long considered the pocket borough of Samajwadi Party boss Mulayam Singh Yadav. The five-day foray, beginning Tuesday, is expected to nudge Gandhi to focus his attack on the Yadav chieftain. This could test already strained ties between Congress and SP at the Centre. As if to quell any ambiguity, Rahul will kickstart the second leg of his campaign from Gunnaur, an assembly seat in Sambhal once represented by Mulayam, pass through the Lok Sabha constituencies of his nephew Dharmendra Yadav (Badayun), son Akhilesh Yadav (Kannauj), and Shahjahanpur which has an SP MP, before culminating in a rally of ‘Most Backward Castes’ in rural Kanpur. Observers feel Rahul Gandhi’s UP campaign is aimed at hurting Mulayam Singh’s bid to mobilize backwards and Muslims around the anti-BSP sentiment. As if to drive home the point, Congress on Monday paraded Samajwadi “defector” Rashid Masood as its prize catch, baring its intent to hit Mulayam’s recovery among Muslims following the disastrous tie-up with ‘saffron’ Kalyan Singh

during LS polls. The SP ranks are already smarting under Rahul’s attack during the launch of his campaign from Phulpur, where he dubbed SP and BSP as equally corrupt. SP is not resenting Rahul’s focus on it, suspicious as it is of Mayawati’s attempt to frame the coming polls as a “Rahul versus Maya” affair. It sees Mayawati’s indulgence of the Congress heir apparent’s attacks with aggressive ripostes is aimed at keeping voters from gravitating towards SP, her main challenger. The resultant split in anti-BSP votes will work to Mayawati’s advantage, SP strategists reason. Rahul has his own reasons to escalate the offensive against SP. The Congress cannot be seen as soft on any of the principal poles, lest it is edged out by the main opposition party in an anti-BSP surge, as happened in favour of Mayawati in 2007. The trip through the OBC-Muslim belt is critical to Mulayam’s fortunes. The region has been the launchpad for the post-Mandal surge of backward satraps, with the ‘Mulayam vs Kalyan Singh’ fight being the top draw of state politics for over a decade. Congress has much at stake in Rahul’s second-phase campaign, as it represents the party’s new gambit on OBCs, MBCs and Muslims.

S

cientists predicted this weekend that sighting of the first strong signs of a particle vital to support Einstein’s ideas on the working of the universe will be reported on Tuesday by the Cern physics research centre. While warning there would be no announcement of a full scientific discovery , they said even confirmation that something like the long-sought Higgs boson had been spotted would point the way to major advances in knowledge of the cosmos. “I am feeling quite a level of excitement,” Oliver Buchmueller, a senior member of one of the two teams seeking the particle amid vast volumes of data gathered in Cern’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC) this year, said. “The anticipation among physics enthusiasts is almost palpable,” said theoretician Sascha Vongehr on his blog, www.science20.com. The observation of a “light Higgs”

December 2011 Edition

would be announced at a December 13 Cern seminar , he said. The boson was posited in 1964 by British physicist Peter Higgs as the agent that gave mass to matter in the wake of the Big Bang 13.7 billion years ago, making possible the formation of stars and planets, and eventually the appearance of life. But efforts since the mid-1980 s to find the particle in the US Tevatron collider and the LHC’s predecessor at Cern, the LEP, and prove Higgs correct by smashing particles together and creating mini Big Bangs, have until now failed. The boson has been called the “capstone” of Albert Einstein’s universe of elementary particles and three fundamental forces that control the cosmos under the “Standard Model” finalized by physicists in the 1970s. Some top scientists, such as Stephen Hawking, have long voiced doubt that the boson exists and should be replaced in the Standard Model by something else.

RIVER ON MARS

P

lanetary scientists have claimed “large regions” of Mars are habitable for terrestrial life. An international team, led by the Australian National University, compared models of temperature and pressure conditions on Earth

with those on Mars to estimate how much of the distant planet was liveable for Earth-like organisms. While just 1% of Earth’s volume - from core to upper atmosphere - was occupied by life, the scientists said their

world-first modelling showed 3% of Mars was habitable , though most of it was underground. “There are large regions of Mars that are compatible with terrestrial life,” the media quoted Charley Lineweaver, who led the study team, as saying.

Defence spend in 5 years to cross Rs 5,20,000 crore

D

5,20,000 crore. This does not include the huge day-to-day cost of maintaining a 13-lakh armed forces. Defence minister A K Antony on Monday gave figures for the planned development of military infrastructure, with new fighter bases, helipads, bunkers, forward ammunition dumps and the like, to strategically counter China and Pakistan. Responding to queries on major projects of Military Engineer Services (MES) in Lok Sabha, Antony pegged the planned ``development’’ of Army infrastructure and ``improvement’’ of IAF infrastructure in the northeast at Rs 7,374 crore and Rs 1,753 crore, respectively. Similarly, capability

efending long unresolved borders against two potentially hostile nuclear-armed neighbours does not come cheap. Besides, acquiring a wide array of weapon systems for billions of dollars, India will spend upwards of Rs 60,000 crore over the next five years on developing military infrastructure and capabilities for the western and eastern fronts. If the cost of raising the alreadysanctioned new mountain strike corps in the north-east is pegged at another Rs 60,000 crore and a conservative estimate of defence capital outlay in the 2012-2017 timeframe crossing Rs 4,00,000 crore are taken into account, it adds up to a staggering Rs

development along the northern borders will cost Rs 24,312 crore, while upgrade of storage facility for ammunition will come for Rs 18,450 crore. Construction of suitable habitat for soldiers deployed in highaltitude areas like Kargil, SiachenSaltoro Ridge and Ladakh, which includes insulation, dome and fibre-glass based shelters, will cost another Rs 6,000 crore. Sources say the infrastructure coming up in the Eastern Army Command includes 5,572 ``permanent defences and bunkers’’ along the Line of Actual Control with China as well as helicopter and drone bases at Missamari, Kumbhigram and Lilabari in Assam.

This is in addition to IAF deploying Sukhoi-30MKI fighters in Tezpur and Chabua as well as progressively upgrading ALGs (advanced landing grounds) in Arunachal and eastern Ladakh. The Army’s offensive punch will, however, come when the new mountain strike corps, with headquarters in Panagarh (West Bengal), takes concrete shape in the 12th Plan, with two new specially trained and equipped divisions under it. Two divisions, with 1,260 officers and 35,011 soldiers, with their HQs in Zakama (56 Div) in Nagaland and Missamari (71 Div) in Assam, have been raised over the last couple of years.

Together, the four new divisions add up to around 75,000 troops. ``For decades, our posture against China in North-East has been defensive. This is the first time we will have offensive capabilities in the mountains if they are needed,’’ said a source. They are needed, even if for deterrence. With five fullyoperational airbases, an extensive rail network and over 58,000-km of roads in Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR), China is capable of rushing over 30 divisions (each with over 15,000 soldiers) at their ``launch pads’’ on LAC in double-quick time, outnumbering Indian forces by at least 3:1 in the region.

o doubt many readers will be keen to know more about president Asif Zardari’s current situation and condition. For one thing, my guess is as good as yours. For another, as history has shown presidents come and go but the Marilyn Monroes stay forever. I’m assuming that Veena Malik will appreciate the comparison and the compliment. The case of the nude FHM cover is a curious one. When I read about the ‘expose,’ I began following the online debate on the issue. Many Pakistanis were weighing in, as were some Indians. The Pakistani debate was as follows: Veena Malik is either a tramp or a woman wronged by a crass and thoughtless publication . The Indian comments were in this vein - Veena Malik is a hero, a champion of liberalism and of freedom of expression. Malik has led the charge against FHM claiming that the photographs have been manipulated, that she never posed for the magazine. Even before the publication hit the newsstands in this city, Hayat had filed off a lawsuit accusing FHM for having falsified the photographs. There is news that the magazine has counterattacked with its own lawsuit. Let’s first tackle the issue of the shoot: was it or was it not? Sadly, I neither know Veena Malik nor

anyone who can positively confirm the reality of the situation. I suspect it may be a combination of publicity stunt and save-myselffrom-homefront-rage-lest-Iend-up-dead . Some who are more schooled in type of shoot claim it isn’t even a nude shoot since nothing is actually truly visible. I turned to the valuable Oxford Dictionary for help. According to it, the noun ‘nude’ refers to ‘a naked human figure, typically as the subject of a painting, sculpture , or photograph.’ The cover’s nude status is speculative but it’s quite clear that the inside photographs don’t reflect a nude shoot. It is, however, a rather provocative and daring stunt for a woman from Pakistan who wouldn’t be able to pull it off at home where such publications don’t exist, at least in the public domain or on newsstands. (This of course, doesn’t mean that there isn’t an active and thriving blue cinema industry and a ready availability of all sorts of underground material for sale). If it’s true that Malik did pose for the folks at FHM, it’s also quite plausible that she could deny it. Certainly many commentators in Pakistan, actively participating in the blogosphere, were of the opinion that Malik’s reputation which matches, in some sense that of her Indian counterpart , Rakhi Sawant - had been compromised

by the illmeaning publication. All publicity helps as we know and after all is said and done, the FHM covers will live on. Given the Indian chants for RahRah Veena, I decided to get myself acquainted with Debonair, having recently put down the wonderful ‘Lucknow Boy’ and read about the challenges that editorship of such a publication posed for a serious editor. One must compare apples to apples after all if freedom and liberalism are to be evaluated. The chastity belts were firmly secured and the raciest material was from the ‘farang’ contingent - in this issue the former Indian bride, Liz bountiful Hurley. I’m not sure if this then means that Indians are not liberal or progressive. However , bandying about lofty terms is a particular specialty of us South Asians. If my own two cents can be added to the debate, I’m happy to offer them. The first cent is that Veena Malik or not the woman on FHM’s cover has a killer body. Second if liberalism is being measured by FHM shoots we’ve got to go back to the drawing board to figure out what exactly liberalism means. And finally, since one plus one equals three, if there were more Veena Maliks we could happily balance the equation of extremes in Pakistan, a reality every Pakistani should covet and pursue.

Now, India’s real climate battle begins

F

or India, Durban climate change talks were about retrieving ground it had lost voluntarily over the last two years and protecting against any future encroachment. In the end, it was enable to ensure that the battle over new encroachment got postponed, and will be played out in parts over the next three years. In the last two years, India had given up on equity and discarded the principle of historical responsibilities, and even derided it. It had hollowed out the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities. The developed world was waiting for a pushover in Durban, but India had decided it was time for a pushback. The US had led at the game for two years. It had successively dismantled the differentiation between developing and developed countries and through the Copenhagen Accord and the Cancun Agreements, and drew the entire world towards a lowambition regime. It didn’t want to do much to cut its emissions and made the rest of the world slip to the lowest common denominator (what came to be known as the bottoms up or pledge and review approach). The EU watched reluctantly from the sidelines. In Durban, it hit back with its own formula that also cornered the US. The EU stitched an alliance with the Small

Island countries and the least developed nations while holding money under the Green Climate Fund as bait. They demanded a new global treaty with CBDR further diminished and equity banished. India fought back. It got equity back on the talks table, though not as firmly as it would have liked. It ensured that any new deal would be subject to the provisions of the existing convention and that it would not force legally binding absolute emission cuts on India. What would be ‘bound’ was left open and the degree of `binding’ norms also needs to be defined. The contours of this new regime are the bone of contention till 2015. India will have to constantly fight to push equity up on the agenda and ensure CBDR remains anchored in the regime. It will have to make sure any

reference to a peaking of global emissions is done on the basis of a fair equitous formula, which too would have to be inserted. It will have to forge alliances like it did in Durban with like-minded countries cutting across groups and look for strategic tie-ups on certain issues. The EU and the US will also push for ‘parity’ of obligations and attempt to shove the scientific significance of historical emissions aside to ensure that the new arrangement only talks of sharing the leftover global carbon space and not the total fair share. If the EU and the US win the next three rounds, the cost to India’s economy post-2020 could be heavy and unfair. India’s victory in Durban was the postponement of when bugles go off for the new carbon Armageddon to next year.

Off track: Express train loses its way A

n express train from Howrah to Dhanbad in Jharkhand took the wrong tracks and ended up heading for Bolpur on Monday evening. It was a good 6-7km before the error was spotted and the 12339 Coalfield Express started backing up slowly. Passengers knew something was wrong when they started going back the way they had come. Redfaced Eastern Railway officials admitted that the mistake could have led to a major accident. Train services have been badly affected in the east since morning due to dense fog. The train had Howrah at 5.20pm. Till Khana Jn (the second station after Burdwan), trains moving towards Dhanbad and beyond follow the same route as those bound for Bolpur, Rampurhat and North Bengal. After Khana, the express was to move to Galsi but the line it took would have taken it to Jhapater Dhal instead. The changing of tracks takes place at Burdwan itself.

Though trains on both routes cross the Talit and Khana Jn stations, they do so on different tracks. The error was not noticed till Burdwan where the Coalfield Express doesn’t have a stoppage. It seems that the driver sped across the station after getting a green signal and it was not possible for him to make out that he was being diverted towards Bolpur, say sources. It was 100 metres from Talit when station staff realized that the Coalfield Express had lost its way. The train was stopped at 7.30pm by “alert railwaymen”, an official said. “There was no possibility of a head-on collision. However, had the train moved further ahead, its pantographs could have got entangled as it is a non-electrified section. It seems that those in charge mistook the Coalfield Express for some other train,” an official from Burdwan Jn said. Sources said a high-level inquiry was ordered into the incident.

Mukesh Ambani to get into fast food busines

The company, which paidRs13,000 crore for the licence, is expected to launch 4G data services within a couple of months at justRs10 per GB, or almost one-tenth of current

ANGALORE/NEW DELHI: Reliance Industries, a $50-billion-plus oil and gas giant, will enter the fast-food business with its own brand next year, opening yet another front to do business directly with India’s growing young population after retail and 4G wireless services. Mukesh Ambani has roped in Rishi Negi, COO of multiplex operator Fame India, which is partly owned by his younger brother Anil Ambani, to develop a quick service restaurant (QSR) concept within 3- 4 months, two senior Reliance executives said. Negi will spearhead Reliance’s entry into a segment that is growing at

least 25% a year and where international brands such as McDonald’s and Domino’s jostle to introduce Indianised cuisines to take on popular local chains such as Jumbo King and Saravana Bhavan. Reliance is exploring a scaleable model like McDonald’s and Domino’s, complete with a standardised menu and express delivery, the executives said. It plans both independent outlets and presence in food courts. “The company is looking at anything suitable for Indian palate, be it Chinese, Italian or Indian cuisine,” one of them said. The Reliance Industries spokesman declined to comment. The executives said the company has zoomed in on

3G charges-an offer the Facebook generation may find hard to resist. Negi is coming in with some experience in the restaurant business. He was the COO of Pizzeria Restaurants, which operated Pizza Hut a few years ago, and was food & beverage manager at Taj Coromandel, the Taj Group’s 5-star hotel in Chennai.

Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore as the tentative locations to launch the business. “With a hypermarket format already attracting a large number of consumers, it makes sense to bundle in food as well,” one of the executives said. The company has already experimented with a fresh bakery at its hypermarkets, Reliance Mart. The move is in line with Mukesh Ambani’s aggressive moves to build businesses for the country’s consumer class, dominated by demanding and aspirational youngsters. His retail arm, Reliance Retail, operates around 1,146 multi-brand outlets across the country through chains such as Reliance Fresh, Reliance

Middle-aged, not young, taking more to e-crimes

he young may be cybersavvy. But it is the middleaged Bangaloreans who are finding in the web a vent for their criminal tendencies. Data collected by the National Crime Records Bureau shows that in Bangalore, those between 30 and 45 years of age are involved more in cyber crimes than youngsters. Among 17 persons arrested for various crimes under

the IT Act in the city during 2010, 10 were from the age group of 3045. Bangalore is very much unlike other Indian cities in this regard. In fact, it is the youth who top the list of cyber criminals across the country. According to the bureau data, 491 of the 1,193 people arrested for cyber crime during 2010 are people in the age-group of 30-45, while 563 are youngsters

in the age group of 18-30. Since 2008, there has been an increase in the number of middleaged people booked for cyber crimes in the city. The bureau records suggest that most cyber offences are for illegal gain, eve-teasing and harassment. According to cyber crime officials, social networking sites have turned hotbeds of eveteasing. “Impersonation, posting abusive messages and stealing photos for misuse later are some of the cases that come to us,” the cyber crime cell officials told TOI. The officials also said that there are a good number of married persons reporting threat or harassment through mails from their spouses or other family members. Family court lawyers confirm the rise in the instances of ‘online harassment’ within families. This trend of harassment by sending emails and posting messages on social networking sites has been on the rise in the past few years. This is often used as a documentary evidence to prove abuse or cruelty by either party in family courts. In criminal cases also such messages are used by the defence,” said Ramchandra MR, a family court advocate.

n 2009, Rita Di Bello, 40, flew down from the UK to Ahmedabad carrying two samples of semen of her deceased husband, safely frozen in a container of liquid nitrogen, in her purse. She desperately wanted to give birth to the child of her beloved husband. On November 5, 2011, Rita gave birth to a daughter, five years after her husband Micheal Di Bello succumbed to cancer. Co-incidentally, the daughter named Miguela, gift of God in Italian, shares the birthday with her late father. “I see this as a sign of God’s hand in my becoming a mother. It was a normal delivery. The fact that she shares her birthday with Micheal made me cry tears of joy,” Rita told TOI from the UK. Rita is buoyed at the arrival of Miguela after five years of struggle to become a mother of her husband’s child after his death. After failure of IVF attempts in the UK, Rita came to Ahmedabad at Bavishi Fertility Center in 2009. However, her first attempt failed. Not ready to give up, Rita came for a second embryo transplant through IVF in February 2011. After the procedure of placing the embryo in her womb was performed, she went to pray in a church in Ahmedabad. Her prayers were answered as she conceived this time round. Rita, who works as a civil servant in the UK, had married Michael, an engineer of Italian origin, in 2001. In 2006, Michael succumbed to

blood cancer. “Michael was an amazing person. He loved me so much that I can’t describe it. After his death, I realized that I just couldn’t love another man. I will love him till death. I feel Micheal has come back to me as Miguela,” Rita said. “We help so many childless couples become parents, but Rita tugged at my heart. We counseled her to re-think her decision about giving birth to a child after her husband’s death. However, she remained adamant,” said Dr Falguni Bavishi. Rita’s eggs were fertilized with her husband’s frozen sperms. The embryo was then transferred to her womb. However, unlike other women undergoing IVF, Rita had limited semen samples. Hence, she was desperate to conceive fast. Her husband had left only five samples, of which three were used unsuccessfully on her in hospitals in the UK, Turkey and Mumbai. Rita had come to Ahmedabad with two samples. The first was used without any result and the second sample was split in five to ensure that she does not run out of her husband’s sperm sample if the second cycle fails. “We still have four samples left. We will ask her what she intends us to do with them,” Dr Falguni said. In the UK, before initiating chemotherapy, hospitals offer to freeze semen samples as cancer treatment is known to affect fertility of patients.

It was high drama at Ahmedabad airport as rickshaw drivers stopped the shooting of Hollywood film ‘American Gandhi’ outside the domestic arrival terminal. Eyewitnesses at the airport said that if the film crew at Ahmedabad airport had not left the campus then the gathered crowd would have in all possibility damaged their expensive equipment. “At around 12.15 pm, the crew members started setting up their equipment outside the terminal. As the director started briefing the actors about the scene, curious crowd had already started gathering around. But as soon as the cameras started rolling a few people from the crowd started shouting saying ‘yeh galat kar rahe ho, band karo’ and the reel life action turned real,” said a private airline official. The protest was led by Bharat Singh, who took rickshaw drivers in confidence, and asked the director to stop the shooting. Singh in his application to Sardarnagar police station has said that such film tarnishes the image of India. Sardarnagar police station officials said that they have accepted Singh’s application and at the same time asked him to move court if

Hollywood crew heckled in Gujarat for ‘showing India in bad light’

he has any objections against the film’s content. However, film crew members said that the film has nothing to do with Gujarat and the story is about a village in India where poor people become victims of a mining scam. Directed by Joseph Mungra, the film has James Patrick Stuart, a popular soap opera star in the US,

playing Mark Martin, a skilled but unemployed mining analyst who turns protagonist. “Mark Martin comes to India and becomes witness to the plight of villagers who are victims under the hands of corruption and mining mafia. The story is set in the backdrop of a nomadic tribe of Gujarat and tells of the hardships

faced by villagers in India,” said a member of the film crew. The crew members have already shot many scenes in Wakaner and Mandvi and will be shooting at various locations in Ahmedabad for two more days. For shooting at the airport, Mungra had paid Rs 28,000 per hour to Airports Authority of India at Delhi.

“I tried to convince the rickshaw drivers that I am not showing anything that could be offensive to them. But none of them was willing to listen and the protestors only swelled in numbers. I want more people to come to Gujarat for shooting as this place has great potential but incidents like this are upsetting,” said Mungra.

After Mumbai, flash mob comes to Chennai

T

ime 4pm. Sunday . The Express Avenue mall in Royapettah was buzzing with shoppers. Some were moving from window to window for that elusive choice, some were digging into food and others were getting in and out of garments. Ten minutes past four , the song ‘Boom , Boom Robo Da , Robo Da’ boomed out of nowhere and nearly 70 persons swarm together at a point and broke into a seemingly impromptu but well-rehearsed jig . It was Chennai’s first flash mob . December 2011 Edition

The event was organized to promote the ninth Chennai International Film Festival (CIFF) to be held between December 14 and 22. Actor Shylaja Chetlur , a CIFF committee member , said the idea was born after a recent show by a flash mob at Mumbai CST railway station, which took the internet by storm . Actor Suhasini , the brain behind the Chennai flash mob , told TOI it was dedicated to actor Rajinikanth whose birthday falls on December 12. “This is our gift for him .” www.indian-times.com.au

New and upcoming Apple AirPlay products

A

t some point you've probably heard about AirPlay, a wireless streaming feature found on your iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, and your Mac. It was first announced in 2010, but with the arrival of iOS 4.3 (and now iOS 5), its features have been enhanced, and more third-party consumer electronics manufacturers are finally adding it to their products, though prices remain elevated. Alas, only a few products that take advantage of the feature are currently available, with the most popular one (Apple TV) coming from Apple itself. But the selection is growing, and plenty more are on the way, so we’ll continue to update the list into 2012. If you’ve heard of another new AirPlay-compatible product, let us know in the comments section. We’ll be updating the list as more products are announced. Few things you need to know about Airplay products Only a limited number of products are currently AirPlay-com-

patible: Right now, only a handful of products offer AirPlay compatibility (see slideshow, below) and they tend to be fairly expensive. The exception is the Apple TV, which only costs $99, and Apple’s AirPort Express (also $99 list). The majority of early AirPlay products are speaker systems, plus a few AV receivers that offer built-in AirPlay support. Video and photo streaming options are limited. At the moment, the Apple TV is the only product that allows you to stream video and photos to your TV from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch. In the future, there will certainly be other boxes that offer AirPlay video support, and rumor has it Apple is talking to TV manufacturers about licensing AirPlay technology so they can build it into HDTVs. The number of applications that support Airplay is growing. It’s pretty easy to stream audio from nearly any iOS app to an AirPlayenabled speaker. However, more apps with deeper AirPlay integration--such as streaming video to Apple TV--are beginning to appear

in the App Store. For instance, the free Vevo app lets you play music videos directly on your TV. (Unfortunately, the helpful filter that once highlighted AirPlay-optimized apps on Apple’s Web site no longer appears to be active.) Wi-Fi is better than Bluetooth-but it’s still not perfect. AirPlay works over your Wi-Fi network and, as anybody who uses Wi-Fi knows, it’s not always rock-solid. In testing some AirPlay speakers, we experienced the occasional dropout and even a few complete disconnections. However, unlike with Bluetooth streaming, your music doesn’t get compressed, so it should sound better, depending on the quaity of the speaker you’re streaming to. Using your iOS handheld as a music source has limitations. When you stream music stored locally on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch, you can only stream it to one device (such as a speaker or Apple TV) at a time. Music Review :

Don 2

A

sequel, that too of a Remake develops h u m o n g o u s expectations, be it the soundtrack or the movie, and nothing short of some elegant and stylish stuff will be accepted by the music buffs. Don 2 comes from the house of ‘Farhan Akhtar’ (Director and Story Writer) who shot to fame with his debut movie Dil Chahta Hai almost a decade ago, from thereon, he’s stuck to the same teamShankar-Ehsaan-Loy for the Music Direction and his father Javed Akhtar for penning the lyrics. The same team has produced some smash hits in Dil Chahta Hai (2001), Lakshya (2004) and Don (2006) - now with Don 2, one expects another thrilling and sizzling outing from S-E-L and the Akhtar’s. In the past two years it has not been prolific for S-E-L; Aarakshan and Game this year proved to be a huge disappointment while Patiala House and Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara were strictly ok albums. So, let’s see if the composers put an end to all the criticism they have received lately! The proceedings start with “Aa Raha Hu Palat Ke”, a 35 second monologue by Shahrukh Khan (SrK) which marks the return of Don and tries to set the mood for the rest of the songs. The second track, “Zara Dil Ko Thaam Lo” starts with Anusha Mani (“Lazy Lamhe”) knocking at the doors of “Aaj Ki Raat” from Don. The chorus is a bit loud while the musical arrangements Sonu Nighm

December 2011 Edition

maintain the same rhythm and pitch during the whole songVishal Dadlani’s entry after two minutes and SRK’s stylish onscreen presence make it more interesting and brings an evil attitude to a song that is being promoted aggressively and is sure to rise up the charts over time. However the second antara disappoints as do the lyrics which make this an average effort from S-E-L. It’s innovative, it’s fresh and certainly the best of the three originals, “Hai Yeh Maya” starts with retro-techno beats and the talented, Usha Uthup behind the mic. It’s been two decades since she sang “Koi Yaha Aaha Nache Nache” from Disco Dancer and recently “Darling” in 7 Khoon Maaf, and her voice still has the power and exuberance to thrill the listeners. A perfect choice of singer for an enthralling composition like this which will find its place at various junctures in the movie. It refreshes the memories of the Asha Bhonsle R.D.Burman classic “Jab Andhera Hota Hai” form back in 1972 and will certainly will grab ears post the movie release if not now. “Hai Yeh Maya Remix” by DJ Shane Mendonsa is a mix of various arrangements and gives a club feel to the song. There’s even more retro and techno in “Dushman Mera” which seems to be a perfect climax outing for Priyanka Chopra and SRK. Sunitha Sarathty starts off well (remember “Khuda Hafiz”

from Yuva?) and joined later by Shankar Mahadevan whose tone of voice sounds a little different from his usual self (read Kishore Kumar). The composition could have been much better if S-E-L had tried to come out of the ‘Don’ zone, the lyrics are lame and there is hardly any innovation here, on the flip side though, a terrific visual treat should blast a dynamite onscreen. Wait for the video! Sunitha Sarathy perfectly brings on the thrill element with her lines- “Har Dil Me Hulchul Hai, Aaya Hai Dekho Kaun” at the very start of “The King Is Back (Theme)” and from thereon, electrifying guitar riffs, some pretentious keyboard arrangements will take you for a roller-coaster ride. It takes

forward the majestic “Don Theme” and at 2.30 it completely goes in the “Dushman Mera” zone. Perfect ringtone material. “Mujhko Pehchaan Lo” is a reprise version of “Main Hoon Don” (from the first film) minus the chorus. It’s an animated and darker version and will disappoint those listeners who compare it with the original version by Shaan. K.K. provides the required attitude and arrogance alongside some powerful drum beats and guitar strumming. Instead of going for something new, the director sticks to the old theme but hopefully it won’t be wasted in the starting credits. What disappoints is “Mujhko Pehchaan Lo Remix” which suffers from an infinite loop of “Don Ko Pakadna Mushkil Hi

Nahi, Namumkin Hai” and SRK’s continuous chanting of ‘Don’.. Don in the first interlude irritates but 3 minutes into this you will want to rip off your hair out for sure. Skip the remix! The last track/instrumental is named “The Don Waltz” where Caralisa Monteiro throws in some opera style notes. The violins remind you of some Tom & Jerry series and refreshes the scene from the previous ‘Don’ where SRK was shown in his bath tub watching Tom & Jerry. A good innovative attempt but one wonder how and when the director will use it in the movie (may be for some Ballet Dance sequence or may be something else?). Overall Don 2 doesn’t quite live up to expectations.

Making a winner of Windows Phone 7.5

ByHarry McCracken

I

refer, of course, to Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android. Both are blockbusters, and I don’t see any reason why they can’t simultaneously thrive for years to come. But is there room for a third major player? At the moment, with WebOS undergoing an open-source reboot and RIM’s next-generation BlackBerry OS apparently nowhere near completion, only one other phone platform has an immediate shot at being a contender: Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7.5. It isn’t there yet. In fact, Gartner’s latest worldwide market-share numbers show Windows Phone capturing a piddling 1.5 percent of the market, behind five other rivals. Still, the idea that Windows Phone might go from being an also-ran to a solid success doesn’t feel like crazy talk. Recently, I popped the SIM card out of my iPhone 4S, put it in a Lumia 800 handset loaned to me by Nokia, and lived with Windows Phone 7.5 for over a week. I not only lived to tell the tale, but enjoyed doing so. In most respects that

matter, Microsoft’s mobile software is terrific. And the experience got me thinking: What characteristics does a mobile operating system need to find success? I came up with five factors: Great software. Last year’s Windows Phone 7 was tantalizing but decidedly unfinished. Windows Phone 7.5 is just plain pleasing--utterly original, easy to figure out, and both efficient and fun to use. In terms of overall pleasantness, it’s iOS’s most serious rival. (Google’s Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is easily the best version of Android to date, but it still comes off as a nerdier, clunkier echo of iOS.) Hardware that’s at least as great. Here, Windows Phone could use some help: The current lineup of available phones is far from terrible, but it’s also not anything to go gaga over. The Lumia is a gorgeous piece of industrial design, but I found its phone to be mediocre by current standards. Another Windows Phone 7.5 model I’ve used, HTC’s Radar 4G, is a nice midrange phone,

not a flagship. Samsung’s Focus models come off as repurposed Galaxy S models. I’d like to see somebody come up with a Windows-based device so sleek and capable that it leaves iPhone and Android owners jealous. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Nokia pull it off: It’s capable of building drool-worthy hardware. Apps. Lots of them. iOS still has the most programs and the best programs. Android is giving Apple increasingly fierce competition. Both platforms have app selections that number in the hundreds of thousands. And Windows Phone? Well, it certainly isn’t floundering. After a little over a year, it’s got 40,000 third-party apps to its name, which sounds like at least modest momentum to me. Of course, Windows Phone doesn’t just need lots of software; it needs the right software. So far, its roster of high-profile apps is spotty. It’s got Netflix and Spotify, for instance, but not Hulu and Pandora. And during my time with the Lumia, my single biggest issue was that I missed photo-

December 2011 Edition

sharing gem Instagram, which remains an iPhone-only delight. At this point, when I meet with a mobile app developer and learn that it plans to support Windows Phone, it still comes as a pleasant surprise. That needs to change. Support from carriers. Most Americans buy their phones from AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, or Verizon Wireless. At the moment, AT&T has five Windows handsets, TMobile have two, and Sprint and Verizon have just one apiece. These companies don’t necessarily need to stock gazillions of models--hey, the iPhone is available only in one new version and two older ones--but they need to go out of their way to tell shoppers what Windows Phone is and why they might prefer it over an iPhone or an Android handset. Wireless merchants don’t have a fabulous track record, however, when it comes to handling products that require a bit of explanation. Buzz. Windows Phone won’t surge unless people get excited over it. The reviews, such as this one by my CNET colleague Jessica Dolcourt, are about as

uniformly enthusiastic as techproduct evaluations get. And one survey showed that Windows Phone 7 owners were happy, or at least happier than Android users. But with Windows Phone sales so meager to date, there simply aren’t enough consumers out there showing off their handsets to their buddies and raving about them. I remain cautiously optimistic that Windows Phone will catch on. For one thing, Microsoft can afford to be patient with it--and the world’s leading software company really can’t afford to abandon the smartphone software market. More important, Windows Phone 7.5 is a fine operating system that deserves to be successful. Sooner or later, good products usually do okay. If Windows Phone doesn’t, it might be a sign that the dynamics of the smartphone business aren’t going to let anything that isn’t iOS or Android do well anytime soon. Correction at 8:02 p.m. PT: The story previously misstated the number of Windows Phones available on AT&T and Sprint. The updated story contains the correct figure.

Guide to the best Indian red wines

Ten years ago, the idea of drinking Indian wine would draw sniggers and the odd ‘vinegar in a bottle’ dig. Since then it has won praise from international wine experts and importantly gotten Indians to drink more of it than they ever have in the history of this spirit-loving nation. Reveilo Reserve Syrah

T

here was both incredulity and anticipation when Vintage Wines decided to introduce a premium wine with half the range priced around Rs 1,000 a bottle. After a pour, however, both issues were flushed out. Bottled under the brand Reveilo, this wine is estate grown -picked from the producer’s own Nashik vineyards and matured in new French oak barrels for nine months. This is a big wine and its elegance makes it a special one. The wine has a smokey character, it’s peppery with flavors of dark berries predominating. There’s more than just a hint of oak which sits well with this Syrah’s flavor profile and the tannins are balanced without being too soft. Syrah hails from the Rhone valley in South East France where it yields a peppery, medium-bodied red. Interestingly, the Indian style is more robust and tannic, similar to the Australia one which is referred to as Shiraz, though Reveilo insists on calling their wine Syrah. This is one Indian

oncentration delivers students to distinction. Concentration does well for the vines too and Sula scores great points on that account with this Shiraz. Straight Shiraz hasn’t been popular until recently, prior to which all of Sula’s Shiraz were going into blends. This effort though makes that decision seem ever more curious. This wine has intense, spicy aromas and the sheer concentration of fruit comes through on the palate while the oak element is subtle, at best. The tannins are however very present which gives the wine good structure. Sula maintains that it will only bottle the Rasa during the best of vintages. The first batch, a 2007 vintage, contained only 600 cases and they

t’s long held the mantle as India’s best wine, becoming an almost household name for the first generation of wine drinkers in India. The legacy has filtered through to the current generation to whom it has endeared, in spite of the variety of international reds they’ve drunk. Ironic then that this iconic wine was produced in Nandi Hills in Karnataka, not Nashik, regarded hitherto as the Indian wine capital. The first adaptation of the patently Australian style of Cabernet Shiraz was grown under the uncompromising attention of revered French wine maker Michel Rolland. Even today, the grapes are hand picked from the oldest of the estate’s vines and given

six months in French oak barrels. La Réserve is a rush of ripe fruit but in a good way. There are also notes of chocolate and vanilla. The fruit and oak contain one another and the tannins balance the two. The wine has a near perfect landing so to speak. Its astonishing consistency over the years justifies the grand name.

standard but that it bares another all together interesting style with hints of mint and eucalyptus, not a hint of sweetness and a full body that fills the mouth and the senses. The dry finish is the proverbial icing on the cake. This wine goes down very well indeed and the bottle looks beautiful too.

While it may seem like a houseboat is a houseboat, in Kashmir, there are actually several styles to choose from – there is a houseboat for everyone. Fidous: These are the largest of the houseboats found in Kashmir. They are very upscale and lush. Typically, these boats have three suits, a deck and a living area. They are considered floating palaces. Khushal: slightly smaller than the Fidous, a Khushal may be considered as a 3-star hotel. With two bedroom suites and fewer luxuries, they are ideal for those on a budget or those with families. Nishat: The most intimate of the houseboats – Nishat’s are popular for honeymooners. With one-bedroom suites and a set of amenities similar to the Khushal, Nishat’s are small and intimate. There simply is no better way to experience Kashmir than by staying on an authentic houseboat. By choosing the one that is best suited to your budget and needs, it is possible to enjoy not only the beauty and wonder of Kashmir but also its unique housing history.

llywood couple Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao have been blessed with a son, who was born through IVF to a surrogate mother at a private clinic in Mumbai Dec 1. Aamir and Kiran confirmed the news, saying: “It gives us the greatest joy to share with you the good news of the birth of our baby boy. This baby is especially dear to us because he was born to us after a long wait and some difficulty.” This is Kiran Rao’s first baby, while Aamir has a son, Junaid, and a daughter, Ira, from his first wife Reena. Aamir ended his 15- year-old marriage to Reena in 2002. During the filming of Ashutosh

Gowariker’s “Lagaan”, Aamir met assistant director Kiran, and they fell in love and tied the knot in 2005. In 2009, Kiran got pregnant, but she had a miscarriage. But now the couple is happy. Kiran and Aamir said that due to medical complications, “we were advised to have a baby through IVF - surrogacy, and we feel very grateful to the Almighty that all has gone well. We are humbled by the greatness of god, the miracles of science, and the kindness and love of our families and friends in being there for us while respecting our privacy.”

Kareena and Saif

S

aif Ali Khan’s sister Soha has confirmed that the wedding between Bollywood’s hottest couple Kareena Kapoor and Saif, will take place immediately after the release of Khan’s home-production Agent Vinod. “The date hasn’t been finalised. Bhai says after Agent Vinod releases, they will finalise the date and share it with everyone, “ said the ecstatic sister. “Tentatively, it is March, since the release of Agent Vinod has been planned for February 2012. It will be soon after that, “ she added. Soha said she’s isn’t quite sure why the couple would want to wait till the release of Agent Vinod. But we learnt from reliable sources that Khan is making the release of his home-production priority. “Saif and Kareena had decided that

they would marry in early 2012. After Nawab Pataudi’s death, the family was in two minds about postponing the date. However, both the families decided that the wedding should happen sooner instead of later, “ a source revealed. Both families are also in agreement that Kapoor will continue to act after marriage. “Why not? Marriage is no longer a hurdle in an actor’s career. Sharmila Tagore and Aishwarya Rai have done their best work after marriage, “ Kareena Kapoor said. The year 2012 seems will be one of filmy weddings. Randeep HoodaNeetu Chandra, Soha Ali Khan-Kunal Khemu and Abhay Deol-Preeti Desai are expected to solemnised their relationships next year and the year will kick off with Genelia d’Souza and Ritesh Deshmukh’s wedding in February.

HOW YOU CAN BUILD SELF-CONFIDENCE WITH MEDITATION It is a sad fact of life that as we grow from childhood to adulthood, we invariably go through various degrees of emotional trauma. This is true even for those of us with relatively stable upbringings; think about how horrible kids at school were to you sometimes. This stuff all takes it toll on our developing minds and to protect ourselves from unwanted emotional pain, we build up defensive emotional walls. These defenses can manifest as aggressive or assertive personality traits – or they can manifest as low self-esteem. By adopting an image of yourself as a person who is not very confident, your ego feels safer knowing that you won’t volunteer to put yourself in the limelight (i.e. in danger of being criticized or mocked). Now while this may (or may not) have helped you to cope throughout school and your adult life so far, you may be aware that in fact your lack of self-confidence is limiting your ability to shine, to enjoy living the full expression of your talents and abilities. And yes, it may be stopping you from showing them all (dammit) just how good you could be … if only you could find the guts to stand up and be counted. Using Meditation To OverRide the Ego and Find Your

December 2011 Edition

Self-Confidence. When you learn how to meditate effectively, interesting things happen. For starters, if all goes well, you will begin to relax. And I mean really relax. At this stage you will feel at peace, and forget about your problems, even if it is just for a little while as you meditate. Then as you go deeper and deeper, you will begin to bypass the fearful “ego” part of your personality and begin to get in touch with that part of your being that is at peace, happy and free. You may not believe that there is a part of you that is so carefree and happy – but believe me it is true. It’s just that you may have never bypassed your fearful, wounded mind enough to experience this level of contented awareness that lies at the core of us all. I could write forever about this process, but in the context of this post, it is enough to say that if you have never meditated successfully enough to have felt this state of being, then it would be well worth your while to explore this phenomenon (by reading and more importantly, meditating) until you get in touch with what I am trying to describe. When you reach this blissful stage of meditation, you begin to see things from a

different perspective. You will begin to understand life from a universal perspective, your own life with all it’s troubles will not seem as urgent and all-encompassing, but rather you will see how small you really are in the grand scheme of things and how this is not something to fear but rather is just fine. You are a tiny little speck in a vast, vast universe – and that’s ok with you. It’s how it should be. Go even deeper and you will understand how in fact you are not just a speck – a separate part of the universe – but (woo-woo as it does sound) you are in fact ALL of the universe. Everything is One Thing and you are that One Thing and in a certain way (not the egoistic Christian way) you are in fact eternal. Then your meditative thoughts may turn to your problems of self-confidence. And suddenly you will not feel so concerned about what people think of you anymore. And when you are no longer meditating but are back in the “real world” facing your selfconfidence issues, you will find that regular meditation will help you with “mind skills”, mental abilities (almost like mild super-powers) to override your ingrained patterns of low self-confidence and rise above your low-self esteem.

My parents are answerable to our close relatives and I wonder how they would be tackling such nonsensical gossip,” Anushka tells me.

“The latest rumor doing the rounds is that I am an anorexic, that I am taking size zero to another level,” Anushka says, seeming rather upset about it. Ranveer Singh, her co-star in BAND BAAJA BAARAAT and now LADIES VS RICKY BAHL, jumps to her defense. “Anushka and anorexic? No way! She eats like no other person. She loves junk food. Some people don’t have the tendency to put on weight. She’s one of them,” Ranveer states. Meanwhile, both Anushka and Ranveer rubbish the rumors that

a couple of scenes of LADIES VS RICKY BAHL were re-shot at Yash Chopra’s behest. “Absolutely untrue,” both scream in unison, “Not a single scene of LADIES VS RICKY BAHL has been re-shot. How can the media print such ridiculous stories, knowing fully well that we’re in the last leg of film promotions? How can you re-shoot the film and partake in the promotional activities at the same time? Is it humanly possible? I wish a section of the media was far more responsible.” www.indian-times.com.au

Tabu attracts Tom Cruise’s attention Hollywood actor is said to have struck a chord with none other than Tabu when they met recently Those Bollywood personalities who got to attend the party thrown in Tom Cruise’s honour understandably clamoured for his attention. Interestingly, there was one lady who did not have to do much to attract Tom’s attention “ our very own Tabu. Apparently, Tom was well versed with the kind of work she has been doing, especially since the actress is now working with Ang Lee in Life of Pi. Says an eyewitness, “Tom is a huge Ang Lee fan and it was pretty obvious that he was more than curious to know about the Indian actress who is working in Lee’s next. So when he met Tabu, they obviously had a lot to speak about.”

Apparently, the two spent a substantial amount of time chatting up about shooting in India and the actress’ experience with Ang Lee. Adds the source, “There are a few Indian actors Tom has always wanted to meet and Tabu is one of them. Also, she was in the Namesake and he had heard a lot about the film. People have been telling him about her choice of cinema and the exclusivity she maintains within the Bollywood space, and he was impressed.” Despite being such a huge star, Tom has not yet got an opportunity to work with the Taiwanese film director and he was apparently sharing his interest in the same with Tabu. “He told her that he wasn’t as lucky as her yet, because he hasn’t worked with Ang Lee.” Well, maybe our lovely lady could pull some strings for him.

Kubra

O

riginally from Bangalore India, I am currently living in Melbourne Australia. My name is Kubra, I am 29 years of age and I am incredibly passionate about bringing Indian culture to an Australian audience. As a professional Bollywood Dance Performer and Choreographer, I love to dance. The Bollywood style is a unique form of dance and is my special passion. I also enjoy cooking and therefore use my time either cooking delicious food in my kitchen or dancing up a storm anywhere I can! When not cooking or dancing I love to travel, I have been lucky enough to see many cities in India and I hope to explore many more places in the future. Travel is a special opportunity to visit new cultures and experience people from all walks of life. The power of a positive spirit is what keeps me hopeful everyday, the beauty of humanity and our ability to keep challenging ourselves and growing as people means we always have the capacity to be better, more kind, more compassionate and

more giving to our fellow man. My love for humanity extends to those furry creatures in our lives. I especially have a soft spot for cats and dogs and in respect for my fellow animal have recently converted to Vegetarianism. I am inspired by Indian ideological leader Gandhi, whose non-violent civil protests led India to independence and are still employed across the globe. Gandhi’s teachings of truth and peace can help us find peace in the modern world. The American author, Neale Donald Walsch, also inspires me. Walsch teaches humility and kindness through his books and his way of life, both these great men have taught me to be both giving and forgiving. My childhood presented me with many challenges, but through every experience I have always remembered a quote from Kahilil Gibran, “I have learned silence from the talkative, toleration from the intolerant, and kindness from the unkind, yet, strangely, I am ungrateful to those teachers”. I have learnt to be kind and loving and forgiving from my past pain. Today I am the person I am because of these challenges. Over time I have learnt to be grateful to those teachers rather than hateful towards them. I focus on the journey ahead and the journey within, for what matters most is the pure soul you carry with you regardless of where you travel. The message I would like

to send to my fellow Indians is to never be ashamed of your heritage. So often Indians seem embarrassed by their own culture, their skin tone or even their accent. We should be proud of who we are and where we have come from. I have learnt to love my brown skin, my native culture of classical dance, music, food and fashion. Indians are so

very unique and have so many different aspects of culture to explore and embrace. We should be proud of our country, proud of our skin and our culture, and Indian girls should say “No” to fairness creams. You are beautiful, exactly the colour you were meant to be, so never change the beauty you have been blessed with.

Ponting or Hussey in line to be axed from India series: Border S

electors might be forced to axe Ricky Ponting or Michael Hussey from the Australian cricket team for the upcoming four Tests against India after their dismal show in the justconcluded series with New Zealand, feels former captain Allan Border. “I think one of the old boys will go,” Border told Fox Sports show Inside Cricket. “I think Hussey or Ponting will go.” While Hussey’s dip in form is recent, Ponting has been without a Test hundred for almost two years now and former Australian players feel the ex-captain is creating a tough situation for himself by not stepping down voluntarily. “He’s a great of the game, he’s been fantastic for Australian cricket,” spin legend Shane Warne said. “Now you’ve got the situation where he’s not performing. So

now everyone’s going to talk. It’s going to annoy Ricky, it’s going to annoy the team ... it is just the worst scenario possible when he decided to play on. “I want Punter to get runs but when you see him getting out like this, it’s just disappointing. I think we’ve got to say ‘what are you going to do?’” The view was echoed by former pacer Damien Fleming. “Without putting a time limit on your career, you leave yourself open to this,” Fleming said. “If he said he wanted to play the summer six months ago I reckon the selectors would have gone with that. But he’s said before the Hobart Test that he wants to continue on. Well, his figures are making it really hard for him to get a game,” he added.

Virender Sehwag had promised Sania supports Paes-Bhupathi ODI double ton to his fans

S

unil Gavaskar’s mantra was, “Give the first hour to the bowlers, the next five are yours.” But Virender Sehwag has his own method. He is just an antithesis to the copybook style of cricket, the waiting game is not for him. He likes to dominate from the start, in all forms of the game. And he has found outstanding success with his method - two triple centuries in Test matches, the only Indian to achieve that, and now a double century in ODIs too boot, not only emulating Sachin Tendulkar but also surpassing him. What more can you ask from a batsman? Talking about his historic innings on Thursday, Sehwag said that he was patient to begin with although he still raced to his half-century in just 41 balls which already had four sixes and three fours. That for him was a patient start! His second fifth took only 28 balls (100 in 69 balls), the third fifty in 43 balls and the fourth in only 28 balls, with 200 coming in just 140 balls. Such was his ferocious hitting that the ball disappeared into the stands every time he

December 2011 Edition

decided to lift it. He played strokes all around the park and there was hardly any green grass visible in his wagonwheel. It was a fare no cricket-lover who saw it at the ground or on the telly is likely to forget in a hurry. The fans must now be wondering if he will strike a second ODI double ton, aping his two triple hundreds in Test cricket. This is what Sehwag had to say about the innings: Never expected it: Though I had said some time ago that I would like to get a double ton in ODIs, I never expected to get it. It is due to the wishes of my fans, my colleagues and wellwishers that I have achieved this landmark. I live on the expectations of the fans: I live on the expectations of my fans. Yes, I had promised my fans I would try to get a double century in ODIs. I knew the day I bat for 45-odd overs, I could attain that mark. And today was the day. The wicket was good, the outfield fast and boundaries small. All I needed was to be patient and spend some time in the middle. God was with me: The

moment Darren Sammy dropped me when I was on 170, I knew God was with me. But I never curbed my strokeplay and went about playing my normal game. The only thing I did was play straight. Even the sixes I hit were hit with a straight bat. Determined effort: Yes, I was determined today. After the Ahmedabad defeat, I had said that the top-order needed to fire. It was a true batting wicket, thus I had to be patient and not get excited. With the ball coming onto the bat nicely, all I had to do was not throw it away. But I did not change my style and went about playing my natural game. Great to emulate Sachin: I was cheering for Sachin when he got his double hundred in Gwalior and it’s great to emulate that and break his record. I’d love to come back to Madhya Pradesh. The crowd has been great and thanks to them for cheering every run. Experience helps: I think you can only get a double hundred when you’re experienced. The last time I played 47 overs in an ODI, I got 175. This time I got 200. It’s just sinking in now.

ce tennis star Sania Mirza on Wednesday backed the decision of experienced duo of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi to part ways ahead of 2012 London Olympics. The Hyderabadi felt the split of the ‘Indian Express’ pair was justified as the duo had played together in the Olympics without much success. “The fact is that Leander and Mahesh have played in the Olympics three times or four times and fallen short. The fact is that they might be the most experienced pair but they have come short. This is Mahesh’s view as well honestly,” she told reporters during an informal chat. “I think it all depends on association (AITA) and the chairman (on what to do next). I think we have to wait and watch. Eight months is a long time in a tennis player’s life. Things change. A lot of things can change. So whatever happens we will try to put our best team ahead and try to do well,” she added. Bhupathi and Paes reunited after a nine-year gap with the plan of representing India at the Olympics next year but stunningly parted ways at the end of this season. Sania, who underwent a knee surgery after suffering an injury during the US Open, is satisfied with her recovery and said she is eyeing a comeback later this month. “It very difficult to come back after a surgery whether big or small. It’s like beginning from the scratch all over again. I’ve been playing for two hours every day, doing fitness and other stuff. But at the end of the day it’s a surgery. I do feel occasional swelling, occasional problems. On a bigger scale, it is good that I can do everything. I don’t have to stop in between. “My first tournament (post-injury) begins on December 31 in New Zealand,” she added. Commenting on the demand of boycotting the Olympics because of its association with Dow Chemicals, one of its sponsors, that has bought the Union Carbide which was involved in the Bhopal Gas tragedy, Sania said she would follow the instructions given by the government over the issue. “As athletes we will go with what the country decides. Whoever is going to decide, I’m guessing it’s the government which decides or whoever, we are with the country. At least I’m. We will support whatever decision the country takes,” she said. The 25-year-old, however, added that Olympics though important was not everything for her as a tennis player. “As tennis players it’s tough for us to think about just one event. Of course Olympics is very important for us. It’s a very important year. We will try to give our best but it’s not like other sports where you can solely concentrate on only one event for a year, six months, nine months or ten months. schedule and our health,” she added.

SEXUAL HEALTH AND AYURVEDIC MEDICINE Dr. C.R.S. Kumar You are trying hard, but somehow it doesn’t work. You simply can’t perform, right? Well, just relax. You have plenty of company. Throughout the history of mankind and all over the world, all able bodied, healthy, macho men, including Casanova and James Bond have had it sometime or the other, so there is absolutely no need for you to panic. The major problem lies behind are ED (Erectile Dysfunction), premature ejaculation, performance anxiety and Low libido etc, among these ED will be common problem among the marital sexual problems. Next the important one is Performance anxiety which is very common among young people. What is Performance anxiety? It is simply the anxiety about whether you will be able to perform or not. The very fear of failure to perform makes you unable to perform. According to Ayurvedic Medicine well-planned and well-executed relaxation, mental cum physical, is the answer to it all. Premature ejaculation (PE), also known as, rapid ejaculation, rapid

till ejaculation, but this requires a great deal of couple cooperation and communication and may be difficult for some. An improvement of the start-stop method is the squeeze technique. Ayurvedic tips for preventing and promoting sexual life:

climax, premature climax or early ejaculation, is a very common sexual problem in men, affecting 25%-40% of them. It indicates a lack of control over ejaculation. With milder forms of premature ejaculation, the man penetrates the vagina and carries out the act but the woman does not get satisfaction through orgasm when the man is finished with his part. But then, many women never get complete orgasm, because the men are self-centred and never bother about the feelings of the woman.

In more severe cases, premature ejaculation occurs even before the penis penetrates the vagina. The semen spills all over the woman’s thighs and external genitals. This causes embarrassment to both partners, because their intimacy lasts just a few moments and then they don’t know what to do with each other. Again the solution for PE according to Ayurveda is relaxation and slow foreplay with the partner instead of rushing in to finish off the act. Experts feel that a start and stop technique is an effective way increase the time

• The solution lies in first identifying the underlying cause – sit down leisurely with your spouse and find out why things are no longer as electric as they were during the honeymoon. • Pay attention to the technique of the sexual act as well. Instead of hurrying up and trying to get it over with, take your time, try gentle caressing, stroking and massaging and build up the foreplay to full arousal. • Remove negative and hostile thoughts during the sex act. • Try different positions, different locations, different lingerie, different perfumes, different everything except of course the spouse. You will surely get the right magic formula all by yourself. • According Ayurvedic

medicine Charka Acharya say’s “Klaibya” is the word that indicates impotency which includes all the sexual problems which needs immediate attention. Ayurveda recommends maintaining vigour and vitality one should follow strict Ayurvedic detoxification followed by virility (Vajekarana treatment) program. Ayurveda recommends proper diet and regular exercise and responsible consumption of alcohol and avoiding smoking for the promotion of vigour and vitality. Add a glow to your skin R

ight there, on your kitchen shelf, are many ingredients that can easily be used to add radiance to your skin. Tone your skin daily with rose water. It is helpful for all skin types. Toning stimulates blood circulation to the skin surface and adds a glow. For a skin toner, take rose water and mix it with witch hazel. For dry skin, mix 3 parts of rose water with one part of witch hazel. For oily and combination skin, mix rose water and witch hazel in equal quantities. Witch hazel will be available at your local pharmacy. If you cannot get witch hazel, use plain rose water, or buy a rose-based skin tonic. Keep the toner in a bowl in the fridge and soak cotton wool pads in it. First use them to wipe the skin. Then, stroke the skin with them. On the cheeks, use outward and upward movements, ending each stroke at the temples and applying gentle pressure. On the forehead, start from the centre and go outwards on each side, again

ending at the temples. For the chin, use circular movements. Then, pat the skin briskly with the rosewatersoaked cotton wool pads. Use a facial scrub twice a week. It can work wonders on the skin, helping to remove dead skin cells and making the skin brighter. It also improves skin texture and produces an even colour tone. It is a powerful cleansing procedure too, leaving the skin renewed, refreshed and glowing. For a scrub, mix ground almonds (badaam) with yogurt. Dried and powdered lemon and orange peels can also be added. Dry and powdered mint (pudina) leaves also help to add a glow. Apply the mixture on the face and leave on for a few minutes. Then, rub gently, with small circular movements, washing off with water. A facial scrub can also be made with walnut powder. Add honey and lemon juice. Mix honey and lemon juice in equal quantities and apply daily on the face. Wash it off after 20

Bipasha’s mantra for a fit mind and body

minutes. It leaves the skin very soft and glowing. Egg white can also be added to this mixture. Fruit packs are great for adding radiance to the skin. They can also be applied daily. Mix grated apples with ripe papaya pulp and mashed banana. Yogurt or lemon juice can be added to the mixture. Apply it on the face and leave it on for half an hour. Wash off with plain water. It not only adds a glow, but also removes tan and makes the skin soft. Dried and powdered curry leaves (kari patta) can also be added to face packs, as it is said to add a glow to the skin. It can be mixed with Fullers Earth (multani mitti) and rose water into a paste. Apply on the face and wash it off when it is dry. Multani mitti also clarifies the skin and is particularly useful for oily skin. The skin is called the mirror of the body and rightly so. No other organ reflects the state of internal health as faithfully as the skin. An unhealthy lifestyle, lack of sleep and exercise,

stress, nutritional deficiencies all reflect on the skin, in terms of dull lifeless skin. Include a variety of natural foods, like fresh fruits, raw salads, sprouts, yogurt, fresh fruit juices, leafy green vegetables, “dalia”, oats, green tea, in your diet.

Fresh fruit juices should be diluted with water. Drink plenty of water. Foods like these remove toxins and cleanse the system, adding a glow to the skin. Indeed, internal health and external beauty are two sides of the same coin.

Ditch wheat to lose weight

T

o most people in India, wheat is staple food. It forms an integral, intrinsic part of our diet and it’s in practically every meal we consume in some form or the other. To the vast majority, it’s unthinkable to imagine a life without the grain. A new bestselling book, ‘Wheat Belly’ by Dr William Davis, a USbased practising preventive cardiologist, is asking you to do just that! Why? According to him, triticum aestivum (what we call modern wheat) has a variety of ill-effects. He cites commonly known facts: that it has been associated with Type 1 Diabetes and that it increases both insulin resistance and leptin resistance, conditions that lead to obesity. To add to that, he insists that it is the only common food with its own mortality rate. The argument? “What we are being sold today in the form of whole grain bread, bagels, muffins, pizzas and so on is not the same grain our grandparents grew up on. It’s not even close. Humans haven’t changed - but the wheat we consume has changed considerably.” Dr Davis feels that modern wheat is “the altered offspring of thousands of genetic manipulations, crude and sometimes bizarre techniques.” It is responsible, he says, for a whole range of inflammatory diseases, from rheumatoid arthritis to inflammatory bowel disease. He notes, “Modern wheat contains a type of sugar called amylopectin A, that raises blood sugar in an extravagant fashion, leading to the accumulation of visceral

fat on the body, the deep fat encircling organs. (You’ll notice that) wheatconsuming people are fatter than those who don’t eat wheat. Among the changes introduced into this plant is a re-engineered form of the gliadin protein unique to wheat, such that it serves as a powerful appetite stimulant. When you eat wheat, you want more wheat and in fact want more of everything else.” The point he makes is that while a sagging belly may be indicative of beer consumption, it’s equally possible it could arise from excessively consuming wheat products, hence the book’s title. We asked the city’s nutrition experts to comment on the book and its findings and statements. Noorie Gada, a sports nutritionist who has read the book feels that you can’t just minus something from your daily diet based on what a book says. “ You cannot completely eliminate something you eat daily from your diet.” She says that it’s important to know “when to eat what. Timing one’s meals

is key to losing body fat.” Ask her what she thinks about the book’s claims and she says that it is “a new fad and possibly a gimmick to gain attention. Everything in your diet needs to be balanced,” she concludes. Naturotherapy practitioner Sejal Vora agrees with Dr Davis that “wheat is harmful and overdone. Gluten does cause you to put on weight” but adds that “what normal salt and oil contain is far worse”. She continues, “I never ask my clients to completely eliminate something from their diet. I don’t believe in extreme measures. While Davis’ information and statistics may be accurate in a way, our bodies are conditioned to this current lifestyle and will show withdrawal symptoms if any item from your diet goes missing. The key is to eat in moderation and in a balanced fashion.” Her solution? “Eat other types of grains, eat wheat in moderation if you have to -- sticking to whole wheat and stay away from processed products. Balance it out.”

RECURRENT TONSILLITIS: HOMEOPATHIC HELP:

>>

Raj Kothuru

A

ll practitioners of Aura Health Concepts wish our beloved readers of Indian Times, a very happy and healthy new year. The tonsils are lymph nodes in the back of the mouth and top of the throat, at the base of the mouth at the junction of opening of pharynx and oesophagus to be precise. They are a part of our immune system. They make antibodies and white blood cells (lymphocytes) to attack germs inside the mouth. They help to filter out bacteria and other micro organisms to prevent infection in the body. Tonsils along with Adenoids serve to fight and collect micro-organisms from entering in the chest through the throat. This makes the tonsils part of the first line of defence against bacteria in food or air. Sometimes, they may become so overwhelmed by bacterial or viral infection that they swell and become inflamed, causing tonsillitis. Tonsillitis can develop in people of all ages. Tonsillitis is extremely common, particularly in children. Frequent attacks of Tonsillitis suggest low immunity, whereby the tonsils are getting inflamed as a part of defense mechanism. They do not need to be removed. There are 3 main types of tonsillitis: acute, sub acute and

forever. Experience shows that such a drastic measure increases the susceptibility and the allergic patients suffer from allergy all the more especially in diseases like Sinusitis, Allergic Rhinitis and Bronchial Asthma.

chronic. Acute tonsillitis can either be bacterial or viral in origin. Sub acute tonsillitis (which can last between 3 weeks and 3 months) is a result of bacteria. Chronic tonsillitis, which can last for long periods if not treated, is almost always bacterial. SYMPTOMS OF ACUTE TONSILLITIS: Repeated attack of cold and cold say every 10-15 days accompanied with high fever, pain in throat sometimes extending to the ear, unpleasant smell and taste in the mouth, hoarseness, snoring and breathing through the mouth, deafness, white or yellow spots of pus on the tonsils, sore throat (some children complain of pain in their tummy, rather than a sore throat), swollen lymph glands under each side of the jaw.

SYMPTOMS OF CHRONIC TONSILLITIS: Recurrent cough. Increased susceptibility to other respiratory infections eg. Sinusitis, Bronchitis, Bronchial Asthma etc. poor health, poor growth, lack of vigor, temperament issues like tantrums, bouts of crying for no reason, difficulty in speech and swallowing, enlarged cervical lymph nodes. Secondary infections – In severe cases the infection can spread to the nose, sinuses or ears. SURGERY - IS IT REALLY A WISE CHOICE? Please do not take a hurried step to get your child’s tonsils removed without checking homeopathic treatment as this simply means that your child’s first point of defense is being removed

HOMEOPATHY SHOULD NOT BE THE LAST OPTION: There is an excellent treatment in Homeopathy which can significantly help frequent Tonsillitis and the tonsils can be saved. Inflamed tonsils or recurrent tonsillitis is the result of low immunity and not the cause of it. Homeopathic treatment is essentially targeted towards enhancing the immunity and hence reducing the recurrence of tonsil infections. This is achieved very easily using safe and effective homeopathic medicines. Homeopathic high success in cases of Tonsillitis is extremely popular. Homeopathy, as you all know works effectively on children and reduces attacks, coverts enlarged unhealthy tonsils to healthy ones, avoids surgical removal of Tonsils in most cases, reduces severity of attacks of Tonsillitis and other related ailments like Sore throat, frequent coughing, red watery eyes, stuffy, running nose,

frequent colds, ear infections, sinusitis, hot head, sneezing, allergies, asthma, pharyngitis, fevers, aches, fatigue, glue ear, Quincy etc. It greatly increases the child’s immunity to prevent repeated infections of many kinds, increases appetite and reduces the need for antibiotics. FOOD: Cold foods, cold drinks, sour foods, ice cream, vinegar, fried foods, bananas, milk & milk based foods must be avoided during episode of tonsillitis. Your Homeopath will tell you all the precautions required. In general, it is important that our children minimise junk and processed food. They need very healthy food, lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, and get plenty of open air and active lifestyles on a daily basis. This not only gives them a wonderful immune system but also helps them to grow up as healthy adults mentally and physically. After all, what we get out is what we put in. You may ask your personal query to Raj Kothuru (Homeopath) via email drraj@aurahealth.com.au or phone 0425 761 826 / (03) 9077 5044 regarding any of your health problems. You will be offered authentic information and an opinion as to what best can be done pertaining to your ailment.

aking antibiotics on a self-prescription basis can be dangerous, experts tell Lisa Antao Most of us lead busy lives today and sometimes, busy to such an extent that we don’t find the time to visit a doctor. So whether we are having a fever, bad cold or sore throat, sometimes we resort to taking antibiotics to compensate our lack of time to visit the doc. But little do we know that doing so on a selfmedication basis can be harmful. Read on to find out why... What are they? Antibiotics are also known as antimicrobial agents or antibacterials. Consultant physician Dr Anil G Ballani defines them as, “Substances that kill or slow down the growth of bacteria and hence, they are also termed as bactericidal or bacteriostatic. Their basic function is to stop and cure any infection in the body.” Though antibiotics target microorganisms such as bacteria, fungii and parasites but they are not effective against viruses. When should one take them? Antibiotics are administered by an attending doctor. He/ she determines the choice, route, dose and frequency of administration after considering the possible target microbe, extent and severity of infection, and urgency of the patient’s condition. Dr Ballani says that a person is given an antibiotic when he harbours an infection in the body. It may be at any region in the human body e.g. tonsils, ears, liver, soft tissue and urinary tract. Specific antibiotics are available which attack specific bacteria in specific organs. If the infection is mild then oral anti-biotics are given. If the infection is moderate or severe then parenteral (Intramuscular or intra-venous) are administered. Are they very strong? Internal medicine specialist Dr Sunil Dalvi explains that there is nothing like strong or weak antibiotic. It’s action against the microbe has to give desired results namely, complete elimination which in turn depends upon the effective blood levels of the drug required to effectively

eliminate the microbe. These levels are in nano or micrograms and hence, the drug required also is in milligrams or grams at the most. A patient’s body weight is noted to calculate the extracellular fluid volume. Other important factors considered are lever and kidney function, haemoglobin and other blood anomalies, administration of other medicines allergies and hypersensitivity. Side-effects Dr Vasant Nagvekar, an internal medicine specialist opines that all antibiotics have some or the other side effects but does not mean it will manifest in everyone. It can be very rarely severe at times like anaphylaxsis (a severe allergic reaction which could be fatal), Stevens Johnson syndrome (severe skin drug reaction) to minor side effects like loose motions, oral ulcerations. Most of the time antibiotics are well tolerated unless patient is sensitive to that drug which at times becomes difficult for the doctor unless patient has had a reaction in the past and informs the doctor. Dr Ballani agrees saying that antibiotics do have side effects like diarrhoea, vomiting, itching, acidity, jaundice, allergic reactions, muscle pain and vertigo. Hence, antibiotics should be used under medical supervision and always wise to ask the treating doctor regarding the side effects in advance. The frequent and indiscriminate use of antibiotics leads to increased resistance levels and they do not work in the future. Hence, a course of antibiotic should never be left incomplete and they should never be used as over-thecounter products. Precautions Oral antibiotics are to be taken only when there is evidence or a high suspicion of bacterial infection, like urinary tract infection, traveller’s diarrhoea or any pyogenic (pus) infection provided simultaneously investigated. Most important is to take the complete dose as prescribed by the physician and not part doses thinking it is heavy. Also in case of any adverse effect of any drug, to stop the drug any inform the doctor, advises Dr Nagvekar.
