August August is the eighth month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian Calendars and one of seven months with a length of 31 days.[1] This month was originally named Sextilis in Latin, because it was the sixth month in the original ten-month Roman calendar under Romulus in 753 BC, when March was the first month of the year. About 700 BC it became the eighth month when January and February were added to the year before March by King Numa Pompilius, who also gave it 29 days. Julius Caesar added two days when he created the Julian calendar in 45 BC giving it its modern length of 31 days. In 8 BC it was renamed in honor of Augustus, who did not take a day from February (see the debunked theory on month lengths). According to a Senatus consultum quoted by Macrobius, he chose this month because it was the time of several of his great triumphs, including the conquest of Egypt.[2] In the Southern Hemisphere, August is the seasonal equivalent of February in the Northern Hemisphere. In common years no other month starts on the same day of the week as August, though in leap years February starts on the same day. August ends on the same day of the week as November every year.

President calls for restraint in anti-corruption fight

S

ays there cannot be one panacea or remedy to deal with it

In a strong message to civil society activists campaigning for their version of the Lokpal Bill, President Pratibha Patil said on Sunday that there is no

single remedy for corruption, and urged maturity, self-restraint, and rational approaches which would not erode the authority of Parliament. “Corruption is a cancer affecting our nation’s political, economic, cultural and social life,” said the

President, acknowledging the debate which is hogging the current political stage as a key theme of her address to the nation on the eve of the Independence Day. However, she cautioned that “there cannot be just one panacea or remedy to deal with

it, but a system of transparency and accountability should be put in place at various levels, and then, effectively enforced.” The problem must be handled “in a manner that is practical, implementable and sustainable,” she said. She emphasised the importance of credibility of the institutions of governance under the constitutional framework. “There should be no effort, consciously or otherwise, that will lead to the erosion of institutional credibility and authority,” she said. This seems to come in the context of the government’s accusation that the civil society movement led by Anna Hazare is riding roughshod over Parliament’s authority and responsibility in framing the laws of the land. Mr. Hazare plans to go on an indefinite fast from Tuesday in an attempt to force the government to accept his version of Lokpal Bill which would bring the Prime Minister and higher judiciary within its ambit. The President said that while discussions could be held across the country on public issues, they could only feed into the lawmaking process which would be left to elected legislators. “There can be discussions, debates, discourses among the people of the country for

public opinion to emerge, which is an essential input in a true democracy. The different shades of opinion should be channelised, through elected representatives for the formulation of necessary legislation,” she said. Calling for the adoption of rational approaches in pursuit of the anti-corruption agenda, the President quoted a Sanskrit sloka which says that anything extreme should be avoided. “India is known for its sobriety and wisdom, balanced and sensible thinking,” she said. The President emphasised the importance of transparency, accountability, and integrity in the implementation of welfare schemes. “The country cannot afford the loss of resources meant for its development,” she said. Noting the uncertainty in the international economy, the President said it needed to be tackled “through co-ordinated global action, as well as suitable precautionary measures in our country.” While she reaffirmed the fundamental strength and resilience of the Indian economy, she expressed concern about rising prices. “Efforts must be made to find ways and means to soften the impact of inflation, so that the benefits of growth are not blunted,” she said.

Shammi Kapoor passes away

Veteran actor Shammi Kapoor with wife Neila Devi.

H

e was suffering from chronic renal failure

Veteran actor and leading star of the 1960s, Shammi Kapoor breathed his last at the Breach Candy Hospital here on Sunday morning. The 79-year-old movie icon was

suffering from chronic renal failure. Alone among the Bollywood stars of his era, Shammi Kapoor had an appeal that was so modern and contemporary that subsequent generations of movie goers could easily relate to him. The roles he played were youthful and romantic but also

edgy and often zany. His characters were steeped in the permissiveness and rebelliousness of the sixties, even though the movie storylines invariably provided for resolution along a traditional moral axis. “As you all know, he was unwell for the past few days. He used to tell us that we should keep laughing and singing. He was a very happy and lively person. He passed away due to kidney failure. He went away smiling, he didn’t suffer much pain,” Mr. Kapoor’s son, Aditya Raj Kapoor told the media. “Please pray that his soul rests in peace. You all are his fans, even am I his fan. I will miss him, and I know so will you all. I just hope to see him more and more on the television,” he said. In the later years of his life, Mr. Kapoor defined himself as a Renaissance man, retired actor and computer buff. He was one of the earliest adopters of the Internet as a mode of communication and was active on the micro-blogging site Twitter. He is survived by his wife Neeladevi, son Aditya Raj Kapoor and daughter Kachan Desai. Mr. Kapoor’s funeral will take place on Monday. As the news of his death spread, tributes poured in from the film industry. “The flamboyance and joie de vivre of the industry lost,” actor Amitabh Bachchan tweeted within hours of his demise.

Pollution in Ganga claims more lives than bomb blasts: Advani Today most people do not realize that nearly a million people living along the banks of the Ganga die each year due to illnesses caused by its polluted water...” “A few dozen people dying in bomb blasts in India becomes big news worldwide, and rightly so. But the tragic deaths of many people, who are dependent on the Ganga, go unnoticed even in India. We must change this,” he said, quoting Swami Chidanand. “Ganga is languishing in such polluted state that people hesitate to bathe in her waters even in Kashi. This is caused by reckless and ill-planned industrialization and urbanization, made worse by lack of elementary civic facilities in towns and villages along it,” Mr. Advani observed. In the upper reaches of the river, hydro-electric projects have caused considerable damage to the Ganga and its natural ecology, leading to drying up of long stretches of the river-bed and depriving the nearby villagers of their main source of water, he said.

NRI woes on surrendering Indian passports M any non-resident Indians (NRIs) say they are facing problems because of the formalities they now have to face while surrendering their Indian passports to acquire US citizenship. “It is mind boggling how much paperwork they have added for someone born in India to revisit India,” lamented NRI Padma Golla from Houston, US. She was among scores of NRIs reacting to the IANS report about India lowering the fee for surrender of Indian passports in early July. Rules regarding surrender of Indian passports on attaining US citizenship, introduced by India’s Ministry of External Affairs in May 2010, were relaxed from June 1, 2011, after strong pressure by NRIs. Indian consulates used to charge $175 as fee for the surrender of old Indian passports and additional penalties for various “violations”. The fee has now been reduced to just $20. “I am being put in a difficult situation where I can’t get a visa while my kid has one and I can’t travel with my kid who just needed an American passport with an application for a visa,” Golla added. Many Indian consulates still have no idea about the announcement. The consulates in countries other than the US are not sure if this new ruling applied to NRIs with British and other passports. The websites of many consulates show the higher, outdated fees. Kawal Gupta from Toronto had a similar problem. He wrote: “I heard on radio that the fees for surrender of Indian passport after

August 2011 Edition

obtaining the citizenship of other country has been reduced to $20 but when I called VFS (visa processing office), they said they have not heard of any such change and that I should submit my forms with the fees of $175.” Till mid-July, the visa processing office insisted on charging a higher fee from Kawal who has four passports to cancel, which means paying about $700. Sanjay Zala of Houston, Texas (US), who became a Canadian citizen in 2006, said Trasvisa Outsourcing, which handles visa requests from the United States, insists he pay a penalty of $250 because he did not surrender his Indian passport within a year. He made representations to the Indian ministry of external affairs, ministry of overseas Indian affairs, senior officers and the Indian consulate in the US, but to no avail. In his letter to the ministry, he wrote, “By paying penalty and Overseas Citizenship of India fees together, is the government of India really interested to increase the interest of NRIs and their investment in India?” “And by imposing this penalty, is the government really doing a favour to NRIs to visit India and obtain Overseas Citizenship of India?” he asked. “I have many thousands of names of the people who became foreign nationals before 2005 and kept their valid Indian passports for over three years. On renouncing their Indian citizenship, they did not pay any penalty,” Zala added. “Why have the consular officers abroad

not drawn any attention about this to the ministry of external affairs? Why is there a gross discr imi nation against those who became foreign nationals after 2005 with valid Indian passports?” he asked. Zala has not received any replies. Tilak Sen and Raamprasad in Britain found it difficult to convince the Indian consulates that British passport holders should also pay the lower penalty. Clarence Gomes from Mississauga, Canada, wrote that the previous rule was that anyone who obtained citizenship before May 2010 had to pay only $20 to obtain a surrender certificate but those who obtained citizenship after May 2010 had to pay $175. Gomes wrote, “There are many like me who obtained Canadian citizenship in March 2011, does it mean that I have to still pay $175 for the surrender of my Indian passport? If so, there is no change in the policy as I understand it. We will appreciate if the correct policy is confirmed as it is still not clear to many Indians who have recently been granted citizenship of another country.” Gomes sent letters to the local TV stations, newspapers and the Indian consulate in Toronto and the ministries of external affairs and overseas Indian affairs but with no response.

Death Of The Item Girl

B

ollywood babes no longer afraid to shake their booty to item songs, the original dancers are feeling the pinch If it’s not Munni, it is Shelia who is making it her profession to dance all the way to the bank, never mind the girls she’s putting out of a job in the bargain. Item girls, defined as dancers who do the oneoff raunchy number in a movie, are now finding their craft being ‘craftily’ stolen from right under their noses. And sadly, there’s nothing they can do about it. B-Town’s creme de la creme actresses taking on item songs are rocking it and how!

The IPS officers who took on the establishment S

everal IPS officers have waged battle with the Gujarat government over the last decade, raising issues ranging from fake encounters to an allegedly partisan role during the 2002 riots. The government, in turn, has charged them in various cases, denied them promotions and given them postings without promise. A status report: Rahul Sharma: 1992 batch. As DCP (Ahmedabad City Control) in 2002, he made records of mobile calls by police officers and politicians, including BJP MLA Dr Maya Kodnani, which allegedly indicate that they were involved in the post-Godhra riots. Details of these records were first reported by The Indian Express in 2004. The government has initiated proceedings for violation of the Officials Secrets Act and indiscipline. Sharma moved the Gujarat High Court on Thursday, challenging the showcause notice served on him. In 2002, as Bhavnagar SP, he had quelled rioters after which he was posted in Ahmedabad City Control. After his disclosures, he was posted with the CBI. On return to Gujarat, he was sent to head an SRP unit in Rajkot. He has also submitted the CD records to the Nanavati Comission. Sanjiv Bhatt: 1988 batch, suspended for indiscipline and poor conduct. In 2009, appearing before an Supreme Court-appointed SIT, he said that after the Godhra carnage in 2002, CM Narendra Modi had called a meeting where he ordered the police to let rioting mobs attack Muslims. Since then, he has accused even the SIT of leaking information to the government

and filed a series of affidavits in the Supreme Court — as well as emails from the account of additional advocate general Tushar Mehta, once his friend, who has since accused him of hacking. The government had been denying him promotions and the DGP office later confirmed this was because of his controversial nature. Satish Verma: 1986 batch. Part of an SIT appointed by the High Court last year to probe Ishrat Jahan’s death, he went against his team-mates when, in June this year, he said the encounter could have been faked. The government has hit back with a case from the early 1990s, when an RDX consigment had reached Porbandar before being used for blasts in Mumbai. The charge is that he went soft on accused Abdul Sattar. Verma’s record includes ordered the arrest of BJP MLA Shankar Chaudhary for rioting, and once slapping BJP MLA Yatin Oza, who now heads the HC advocates’ association and is pursuing his arrest in the RDX case. Verma, given minor posts since 2003, was made joint commissioner (traffic) in Ahmedabad in 2010. Rajnish Rai: 1992 batch, now on study leave. In 2007, as DIG (CID-crime), he took over investigations from Geetha Johri in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case and arrested IPS officers D G Vanzara, Rajkumar Pandian and Dinesh MN. He was removed and later sent to the Crime Records Bureau and then to head an SRP training centre. While studying law at Gujarat University, he was charged with copying; the High Court later cleared him. He has complained to tribunal CAT about a

downgrade in his annual confidential report to deny him a promotion. R B Sreekumar: 1971 batch, now retired. He was Additional DGP (Intelligence) during the 2002 riots. In depositions to a state-appointed panel in 2004-05, he alleged the government had ordered the police to be partisan during the riots. He was denied promotion to the rank of DGP (he qualifies on seniority) as the government took up a case from 1987, when he had been Kutch SP. CAT ruled in his favour, directing his reinstatement even after retirement, an order upheld by the HC. He has written The Diary of a Helpless Man on alleged police subversion during the riots. Kuldeep Sharma: 1976 batch. Denied the DGP’s post, he is now on Central deputation in Delhi. Heading CID (crime) in 2005, he had taken on then home minister Amit Shah , writing to the chief secretary about Shah being bribed by fraud case accused Ketan Parikh. Since then, the government has arrested his brother Pradeep Sharma, an IAS officer, in connection with a land scam. Kuldeep Sharma, given minor postings, went to CAT when his ACR was downgraded, and won an order in his favour. He was later implicated in an encounter case from 1984, when he was Kutch SP, with the CID probing him for murder and kidnapping till the High Court quashed the charges in 2010. He was also probed for wrongful confinement of a subordinate and his wife during his time in CID (crime); the HC has since stayed the proceedings. Brother Pradeep has been in jail for more than a year.

Orissa plans to end untouchability, ban on dalits temple entry

I

What’s cooking between Anushka and Arjun Kapoor? Ranveer Singh has competition. His ‘close pal’ Anushka seems to be bonding with debutant Arjun Kapoor these days. If the recent developments are any indication, it looks as if a new ‘friendship’ is blossoming in B-Town. We’re talking about Anushka Sharma and veteran filmmaker Boney Kapoor’s son Arjun. In fact, there’s a strong buzz that she may be cast as his heroine in his debut movie, a Yash Raj production, given that she herself is an YRF protege. Needless to say, Ranveer Singh may have cause for concern over his kabhi on/kabhi off girlfriend’s special bond with her newest pal. The two apparently couldn’t be kept apart at a recent dinner. Says a source connected with the studio, “Even though Aditya Chopra, Habib Faisal (director of Arjun’s debut film Virus Diwan) and a few other friends were present at this outing, Arjun and Anushka were chatting and laughing as if they’ve know each other for years.”

n its bid to end the age-old practice of untouchability and ban on entry into temples in certain pockets of the state, Orissa government has prepared a strategy to deal with such situation. “It was decided to initiate prompt action against the persons delivering inflammatory speeches on the basis of caste besides launching massive awareness campaign against the menace,” a senior official in the ST, SC, OBC and Minorities Development department said today. The state government’s plan to check the dual issue was part of the strategy prepared to be submitted with the National Commission for Scheduled Caste (NCSC). The state government had earlier assured NCSC that it would prepare a strategy plan to combat the practices last month. “District administration along with police should move the administration of major temples in the state to issue necessary advisory to managing committees to take all possible steps for ensuing that there is no discrimination between one community and the other so far as entry and offer of puja are concerned,” the strategy plan report said. Earlier NCSC chairman P L Punia had expressed grave concern over the ban on entry of dalits into a temple at Brahmagiri in Puri district. Punia visited the temple and asked the government to ensure that all should get equal opportunity to enter temple and offer puja. The report said the district authorities will take steps for printing posters, handbills, leaflets and distribute them in villages. “Hoardings need to be erected near temples and conspicuous places of gram panchayats. Steps may also be taken to create awareness through street play and other cultural activities,” it

said. The government also decided to make it a point to discuss the issues of untouchability and dalit’s temple entry in monthly meetings of Panchayat Samities and Gram Panchayats in vulnerable pockets. The strategy plan also suggested that there should be added effort to create awareness about the ill effects of untouchability in the curriculum of elementary and secondary level of education. “The students of elementary schools should not only be taught about the bad of

untouchability but also should be encouraged to ensure that the school becomes an example of for setting a suitable ambience where children interact with each other free from caste-affiliations,” the official said. Stating that greater level of urbanisation, economic development and education had resulted in substantial blurring of the caste discrimination, the government admitted that in some remote and backward pockets stray incidents of untouchability related issues have been reported.

Army, cops exposed as ‘encounter’ unravels

A

s police and Army officials distance themselves from the killing of a civilian in a fake encounter in the border district of Poonch on Saturday night, the picture that is emerging is of either willing ignorance or a complete collapse of authority. It was nearly a month ago that almost 50 Rashtriya Rifles and Special Operation Group (SOG) personnel were deployed to recce forests in Mehrote, where the alleged encounter took place, reportedly at the behest of a Territorial Army jawan and a Special Police Officer — the same two who are now under arrest for “murder” for having

led the security forces into believing that they were chasing a top Lashkar militant, and for shooting a civilian and passing him as the militant. Official sources confirmed to The Indian Express that they had been led to believe that some wanted militants, including Pakistani national and Lashkar ‘divisional commander’ Abu Usman alias Adnan alias ‘DOC’ was in the area, by the jawan and the SPO. Jawan Abdul Majeed and SPO Noor Hussain reportedly assured senior officers of 25 RR that they would get a “prized catch” in the next few days. “As troops do not go for

operation without taking local police with them, five SOG personnel were sent from Surankote to the RR Post at Mehrote on July 20,” a senior police official said. The official added that while the SOG personnel and RR troops were supposed to give a report on their activities to seniors on a daily basis, there had been no regular contact with them for days, till the evening of the alleged encounter. Police officials at Surankote and Poonch reportedly got a message from SOG personnel at Mehrote about the Lashkar militants. Accordingly, additional police and RR reinforcements from Surankote and other nearby areas were sent. The RR troops were reportedly headed by an officer of the rank of Major. Majeed and Hussain reportedly now managed to convince these additional officials and troops to take positions 300400 m short of the encounter site, and keep waiting through the night as, sources said, nearly 2,000 bullets were fired. Questions are being asked about how troops participating in the operation along with their officers were virtually left to the command of a TA jawan and SPO, and that if the two of them were indeed alone involved in the shootout, how they carried such a large quantity of ammunition. With the pistol seized from the deceased found to be “rusted” and incapable of firing even a single shot, it also raises the question as to how, in the absence of retaliatory fire, did the additional troops not conclude that the encounter they were witnessing was fake.

Eighteen Reasons For Fasting R

amadan is a month of fasting and prayers for the Muslims. The fast consists of total abstinence from food and drink from dawn to dusk. There is, however, a greater significance to fasts than mere abstinence from eating and drinking. The real objective of fasts is to inculcate in man the spirit of abstinence from sins and of cultivation of virtue. Thus the Qur’an declares that the fasts have been prescribued with a view to developing piety in man, as is clear from the verse quoted at the top of this page. How are the many facets of piety sought to be cultivated through the fasts? 1. The prime consideration in undertaking fast, as in any act of devotion, is to seek NEARNESS TO GOD and beseech HIS PLEASURE and FORGIVENESS. This itself generates a spirit of piety in man. 2. The wilful creation of the stringent conditions of hunger and thirst for one’s own self, simply in obedience to the Divine Order, measures the FAITH of man in God and helps to strengthen it by putting it to a severe test. 3. Fasting enhances through creation of artificial non-availability, the value of the bounties of God, which man is apt to take for granted in the midst of plentiful availability, and thus inculcates in man a spirit of GRATITUDE and consequent DEVOTION to GOD. Nothing else can bring home to man the worth of God’s bounties than a glass of water and a square meal after a day‑long fast. This also reminds man that the real joy in enjoying God’s

bounties lies in MODERATION and RESTRAINT and not in OVER INDULGENCE. 4. Fasting makes us deeply conscious of the pangs of hunger and discomfort suffered by the less fortunate among our brethren, who may have to put up with such stringent conditions all through their lives ‑ it thus enkindles in man a spirit of SACRIFICE leading to CHARITY towards his suffering brethren. 5. Fasting affords man an unfailing training in ENDURANCE ‑ i.e. a SPIRIT OF. ACCEPTANCE of the inevitable, which could well prepare him to put up with the unchangeable situations in life in the same spirit of RESIGNATION as cultivated during the fasts. 6. Fasting develops COURAGE, FORTITUDE and a FIGHTING SPIRIT IN man to surmount the heavy odds in life with a cool and tranquil mind. It sharpens his, power of CONCENTRATION to overcome obstacles, through a vigorous exercise all through the month, leading to a steeling of his WILL POWER and RESOLVE, which could help him in trying situations in actual life. It is seen that many an undesirable habit which is found hard to leave, is more easily left off during the days of fasting. 7. Fasting teaches man RELIANCE on God and CONFIDENCE in HIM in facing the bitter situations in life with the comforting thought that these too, ordained by Him, could well be surmounted through His assistance alone, even as the rigorous state of fasting for a complete month. For, fasting develops the quality of PATIENCE in man, with the realisation that, as the days of fasting,

though seeming unending do have a successful and, so are all the bitter situations in life. It therefore infuses a spirit of GOOD CHEER, (driving away BITTERNESS and DESPAIR) in his attitude towards life and in his demeanour towards others. 8. Through quick alternation of the state of plenty and of scarcity, fasting seeks to inculcate in man the right type of attitude in different situations in life‑ of GRATITUDE and THANKSGIVING in plenty and of PATIENCE and FORBEARANCE in difficulty. 9. Fasting is meant to CONQUER ANGER, not to augment it, and to develop SELF‑CONTROL in man; for the vigorous effort of wilfully putting up with a continued state of hunger and thirst can well be extended to conquer other infirmities of human character that lead man into error and sin. 10. Fasting inculcates a spirit of

TOLERANCE in man to face unpleasant conditions and situations without making his fellow-being the victim of his wrath on account of his adverse conditions, such as deprivation of his basic needs of life, which constitutes the common cause of dissension among men. 11. Fasting MELLOWS a man and enhances his character, giving jolt to the human instincts of ‘PRIDE, HAUGHTINESS, ENVY and AMBITION, for when fasting, a man’s energies are too sapped to follow these instincts which are the chief causes of discord and conflict among men. 12. Fasting exposes the weakness of man in the event of his being deprived of but two of the bounties of God ‑ those of food and drink; it thus infuses in him a spirit of MEEKNESS and SUBMISSION, generating HUMILITY and PRAYER in an otherwise arrogant man.

13. Fasting breathes the spirit of FORGIVENESS in man towards his subordinates, as he himself seeks God’s FORGIVENESS through fasts and prayers. 14. Fasting affords lessons in PUNCTUALITY through man’s strict adherence to various time‑schedules in the observance of fasts and offering of prayers. 15. Fasting can be made to effect ECONOMY in an individual’s life, which can be extended to wider spheres. 16. Fasting enforces in man rigid DISCIPLINE ‑ mental, spiritual and physical ‑ a trait of character which forms an essential ingredient to success in human life. 17. Fasting provides LEISURE, that could he gainfully employed in devotional or intellectual pursuits. The month‑long duration of fasts creates a proper climate for the SPIRITUAL REFORMATION in man, infusing in him a spirit pf enthusiasm and zest to turn over a new leaf ‑ an opportunity provided every year. 18. On the physical side, fasting cleanses the human system of the accumulated impurities of uninterrupted eating throughout the year. It prepares the body for toughness and hardihood to face disease or conditions of scarcity. The rigid abstinence that the fast provides, regulates man’s HEALTH, sharpens has INTELLECT, gives spurt to his SPIRITUALLY and enhances the qualities of his HEART. With the cleansing of the human body, it paves the way for its easy and effective rebuilding through meals at the end of the day or after the month is over.

Rakhi Celebrations in India R

akhi is undoubtedly one of the most popular cultural festivals in India. It is an occasion that speaks of the undying love between a brother and a sister. Raksha bandhan is a promise to protect and cherish forever the sacred bond that symbolises this relationship. This is one of those rare ancient cultural occasions that does not limit the rituals to a brother and a sister. You need not be a related by blood or family to tie a rakhi and do pooja on Rakshabandhan.

Regional Raksha Bandhan Celebrations Owing to the regional influence of the local legends and their relevance in different parts of the country, the celebrations of Rakhi vary throughout India. This festival is primarily known as being associated with the north and north western part of the country. But, it can be safely said that with changing times and the world having become a smaller place, this occasion has gained popularity in many parts of this country and even so the world.

Rakhi Purnima or Rakhi Day Rakhi or Rakhi Purnima or Rakhi Day on a full moon day in the month of Shravana of the traditional Hindu calender. Rakshabandhan represents the sacred bond between a brother and a sister. Accompanied by chanting of mantras, sisters tie the thread of Rakhi on her brother’s wrist. Rakhi is a brothers promise to protect his sister from all negatives of life. It is also a amulet protecting the brother from all evils and is understood to bring in luck and prosperity in his life.

A Societal Ceremony - Rakhi The rituals of Raksha bandhan are not binding to brothers and sisters or members of a family alone and they transcend the confines of blood and familial relations as well. When a Rakhi is tied on the wrist of people close to you, it brings everyone closer so much so that everyone is the part of a secure social structure. It is thus that Rakhi Utsavs, too, take place where large gatherings of people from a society or community take part in Rakhi ceremonies.

Independence Day in India I

The Constituent Assembly, to who power was to be transferred, met to celebrate India’s independence at 11pm on August 14, 1947. India gained its liberty and became a free country at midnight between August 14 and August 15, 1947. It was then that the free India’s first prime minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru gave his famous “Tryst with Destiny” speech. People across India are reminded of the meaning of this event - that it marked the start of a new era of deliverance from the British colonialism that took place in India for more than 200 years.

ndia celebrates Independence Day on August 15 each year. India became an independent nation on August 15, 1947, so a gazetted holiday is held annually to remember this date.

What do people do? Independence Day is a day when people in India pay homage to their leaders and those who fought for India’s freedom in the past. The period leading up to Independence Day is a time when major government buildings are illuminated with strings of lights and the tricolor flutters from homes and other buildings. Broadcast, print and online media may have special contests, programs, and articles to promote the day. Movies about India’s freedom fighters are also shown on television. The president delivers the ‘”Address to the Nation” on the eve of Independence Day. India’s prime minister unfurls India’s flag and holds a speech at the Red Fort in Old Dehli. Flag hoisting ceremonies and cultural programs are held in the state capitals and often involve many schools and organizations. Many people spend the day with family members or close friends. They may eat a picnic in a park or private garden, go to a film or eat lunch or dinner at home or in a restaurant. Other people go kite flying or sing or listen to patriotic songs.

Public life Independence Day is a gazetted holiday in India on August 15 each year. National, state and local government offices, post offices and

Symbols

banks are closed on this day. Stores and other businesses and organizations may be closed or have reduced opening hours. Public transport is usually unaffected as many locals travel for celebrations but there may be heavy traffic and increased security in areas where there are celebrations. Independence Day flag raising ceremonies may cause some disruption to traffic, particularly in Dehli and capital cities in India’s states.

Background The struggle for India’s Independence began in 1857 with the Sepoy Mutiny in Meerut. Later, in the 20th century, the Indian National Congress and other political organizations, under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, launched a countrywide independence movement. Colonial powers were transferred to India on August 15, 1947.

The sport of kite flying symbolizes Independence Day. The skies are dotted with countless kites flown from rooftops and fields to symbolize India’s free spirit of India. Kites of various styles, sizes and shades, including the tricolor are available in the marketplaces. The Red Fort in Dehli is also an important Independence Day symbol in India as it is where Indian Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru unveiled India’s flag on August 15, 1947. India’s national flag is a horizontal tricolor of deep saffron (kesaria) at the top, white in the middle and dark green at the bottom in equal proportion. The ratio of the flag’s width to its length is two to three. A navy-blue wheel in the center of the white band represents the chakra. Its design is that of the wheel which appears on the abacus of the Sarnath Lion Capital of Ashoka. Its diameter approximates to the white band’s width and it has 24 spokes.

Krishna Janmashthami

J

anmashtami also known as Gokulashtami marks the celebration of the birth of Lord Sri Krishna. Sri Krishna was born in the ‘Rohini’ nakshatram (star) to King Vasudeva and Devaki Devi on the eighth day of the dark fortnight in the month of Sravana. This festival is also known as Sri Krishna Jayanti and Krishnashtmi. The actual day of celebration can be on two different days as the star ‘Rohini’ and Ashtami may not be on the same day. These days correspond to the August and September months on the Gregorian calendar. Sri Krishna is considered as the eighth avatar (incarnation) of Lord Vishnu’s, (one of three major Hindu Gods) on earth. He is considered to be the Lord’s most glorious incarnations. It is said that

his remembrance true heart brings extreme joy and pleasure because Sri Krishna himself was a manifestation of joy at all levels and in all walks of life. No other God in the Hindu pantheon, or for that matter in any other religion, is associated with so many romantic tales and so fully radiating with all the divine attributes as Sri Krishna. Since Sri Krishna lived in luxury throughout his life, Sri Krishna Jayanti is celebrated with pomp and splendor. Plenty of sweets are made on this day. Among these are laddus (yellu oonde), chakli, cheedai, payasam (kheer), and so on. In addition, plenty of milk products especially butter, which was Sri Krishna’s favorite childhood food, is given in offerings. A wide variety of fruits are also offered. The most common sweets made laddus and payasam. Great indeed are his many Leelas and the way in which he charms one and all. Several sages and seers have paid homage to him. Narada, Sri Kulashekara Azhwar, Andal, Tirumangai Azhawar, Nammazhwar have sung glorious verses in praise of Lord Krishna who embodies Shudda Satvam. The Bhagavad Gita coming from the Lord is the absolute truth which has withstood the test of time and has formed the basis and inspiration for many Acharyas and Azhwars. The life and message of Sri Krishna is the most stirring saga

of one of the greatest saviour and profounder of Dharma. Born in the dungeons of Kansa who was out to kill him at the very moment of his birth, Sri Krishna’s life is replete with many such mortal dangers which he successfully triumphs over. He was the unchallenged hero of his times both in terms of his bodily prowess and his intellectual brilliance. Sri Krishna Jayanti, therefore, signifies not merely the birth of a great and Divine teacher of mankind in some distant past but the lighting of the spark of the Divine Power in every one of us, which spurs us on to play our dynamic part in this world of practical and hard realities with a sense of high spiritual purpose. Krishna represents the total power of attraction (Aakarshna Shakti) like a magnet of infinite rise. Hence Krishna is the source of joy. The cultural aspects are represented by the traditionally dressed devotees. The raas or dance is also done with devotees taking part with spiritual fervor. Sri Krishna who manifests all levels of joy, is also the source of spiritual joy, which overrides mental or emotional joy, just as emotional joy overrides physical joy. If all the three are integrated and interdependent, then the observance of the festival takes on the full meaning of Sri Krishnaarpanamastu - let everything be offered to Sri Krishna.

An industry source reveals, “The idea of casting Aamir and Sharman came up during the shoot of 3 Idiots. Hirani felt that a new pair would bring in a fresh breath of air into the film. Aamir and Sharman have amazing comic timing and also great chemistry onscreen. You can see that even in their first film together, Rang De Basanti. When he shared the idea with Aamir, he loved it. He told Rajkumar that he would be game for it if the script was interesting.” Another source says, “Though Sanjay played Munna Bhai to perfection, having Aamir on board will take the franchise to the next level. He is not only a fine actor, but also a much bigger brand name, and a marketing genius.” A source closely working with the franchise informs, “A few months ago, Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Rajkumar Hirani had a closed door meeting with Sanju, where they told him that they would not be going ahead with him in the Munna Bhai sequel. This definitely upset Sanju.” It may be noted that Chopra and Hirani were conspicuous by their absence at Sanjay and Maanyata’s party, recently. When contacted, Hirani denied these claims.

BODYGUARD

Phhir

R

T

he music album of BODYGUARD does carry huge expectations as it is the comeback for the once numero uno composer-singer Himesh Reshammiya, who has delivered some chartbusting as well memorable love songs for Salman Khan in films like PYAAR KIYA TO DARNA KYA, TERE NAAM and KYON KI. While Himesh has been absent from the music scene for quite a while as had quit composing for other actors (except himself) and it was quite a waste of a musical talent like Himesh and so it’s good news to see him back to composing for other actors as well and especially to Salman Khan who had given him his first big hit. With Salman Khan ruling box-office after hits like WANTED, DABANGG and READY, we are sure that this album will provide Himesh with the perfect comeback vehicle. And also with the numero uno composer Pritam coming in for a guest track one can indeed look forward to a great album, so let’s move on! The first song, “Bodygaurd”, introduces the lead protagonist and can be labeled as the title song which is rendered by Salman Khan and the Band of Power. However, without doubt the title track is a disappointment as the net result is a pedestrian effort with a ‘khichdi’ tune that appears to be very heavily inspired by “Ringa Ringa”. What one expected was heavy duty stuff like the DABANGG title track or even a la SINGHAM. The song has an unusual or as one might add a novel start with an announcement that a film called BODYGAURD is releasing this Eid, and it has a very good title track and then comes the Salman Khan monologue, “Mujh par ek ehsaan karna

ke mujh par koi ehsaan na karna”. It’s mainly a chorus song that will naturally be used as a background score, especially during the action sequences where the heroics of the bodyguard is shown as he is required to save the damsel in distress. The lyrics by Shabbir Ahmed too are slightly kiddish but they do manage to do the needful; that is to convey the theme of the movie and list out the character of the main lead and relies more on Salman’s on-screen persona. Will be appreciated by those countless Salman Khan fans! The remix version called the “Title Track Remix” is a tad better than the original and the arranger needs a pat on the back for making it spicier and more peppier. If you have missed Salman and his sugary sweet romantic side during his latest hits- WANTED, DABANGG and READY, he is back and how! And helping him in this endeavour is the guest composer, melody king, Pritam, who delivers an ace in the form of “I Love You”, rendered effortlessly and beautifully by Ash King along with Clinton Crejo. While Pritam’s detractors might call it a rehash of his previous memorable love ditties but this is not the typical trademark Pritam style composition (except of course in the ‘antara’) as melody reigns supreme here and the very gentle soft tune comes as a whiff of fresh air that is bound to conquer the hearts of the die-hard romantics as well as those who have an ear for good music. Lyrics by Neelesh Mishra are very good and light on the ears as well. “I Love You” remix version was not needed, but who minds listening to an absolute gem of a song in a more racier tune with lovely background crooning. Shaan is absolutely delightful in the “I Love You” unplugged version, and the composer deserves kudos for making this a totally new enchanting fare as much effort has been put in to make the arrangements different. More of electronic flute, guitar and harmonica dominate proceedings. Director : Siddique Music : Pritam and Himesh Reshammiya Lyrics : Shabbir Ahmed and Neelesh Misra Starring: Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Mahesh Manjrekar, Shatrughan Sinha, Aditya Pancholi, Hazel Keech, Rajat Rawail, Asrani, Katrina Kaif, Raj Babbar, Mohan Kapoor, Himani Shivpuri

aghav Sachar takes a deep plunge into loud raunchy disco buzz and thrills out with a moderately paced cabaret number in average sounding ‘Karma Queen’. It’s situational, routine and predictably garish ‘item number’ type of soundtrack that tries to entice, enthrall and seduce in its four minute plus duration. Sunidhi Chauhan’s haughtily pitched voice is at the helm of affairs with Raghav Sachar chilling out with a couple of lines in the middle interludes. The song tries to be intimidating like any stylish ‘Bond’ theme number with strong affixation of Bollywood-ish style of alluring dancing appeal, overall a strictly mediocre track. After delivering out a feeble track with the dependable Sunidhi Chauhan, Raghav Sachar picks up another winning ace in the form of Shreya Ghoshal in composing out a stereotypical sentimental track in ‘Gumsum’. It sounds more like a meek version of Shreya’s sung ‘Kyun’ (KAMBAKKHT ISHQ), where mediocre sounding arrangements in outmoded display disappoints. Saxophone played at intermittent places serenades out a western feel but overall the soundtrack is too feeble and proves to be another disappointment from the composer. ‘Loot’, the last original soundtrack of the album, a sporadically live disco beat number rejuvenates the decorum again. Raghav Sachar regains some ground with this above-average number that pitches racy disco-beat fillers played randomly with energizing electronically tuned beats and enthused vocals. Raghav Sachar along with Neha Bhasin and Jankee Parekh sings this with great vocal passion but arrangements aren’t too catchy to make any strong impact. Like the previous numbers, it plays to the situational needs and ends up as another addition in the album.

Twitter on Attack- A new twitter virus is out!

L

atest news reveals the fact that the social media micro-blogging website Twitter is experiencing difficulties with a rapidly spreading virus. A malicious hacker has exploited the service by causing messages and thirdparty websites to pop up when a user moves their mouse over a link. The virus also causes users to “retweet” the virus to their followers. This has allowed it to spread like wildfire. The Twitter virus is potentially dangerous as it opens the potential for cybercriminals to redirect users to sites with malicious code or spam advertising pop-ups. The mouse over virus has worked on both Twitter’s original site and the redesigned version it introduced last week. Third-party Tweeting websites, such as TweetDeck, are not impacted by the virus. Twitter users should stay off Twitter.com for the time being and use one of the third-party service websites. Twitter Officials says the attack is now quarantined, and needs no panic; but we are not sure about it as we personally met the virus an hour before! Initially we thought like the rollover / lightbox like effect is specific to some profiles where users changed some new settings in twitter but once we started reading the recent tweets; we finalized it as the outbreak of the new virus!

ndia, a country of 1.2 billion people, now has 851.7 million mobile phone subscribers, with 11.41 million connections added in June, according to official data released Monday. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) said the wireless user base grew 1.36 percent, from 840.28 million in May. While the share of urban subscribers declined to 66 per cent from 66.02 per cent, the share of rural subscribers marginally increased from 33.98 per cent to 34 per cent, the report said Monday. With this, the total number of telephone subscriber base touched 885.99 million, registering a growth of 1.29 per cent. Overall teledensity in India reached 73.97. However, of the total 851.70 million wireless subscribers in March, only 594.77 million were active subscribers on the date of peak visitor location register (VLR). VLR is a temporary database of the subscribers who have roamed into the particular area which it serves. Each base station in the network is served by exactly one VLR, hence a subscriber cannot be present in more than one VLR at a time. The growth in this category was led by telecom giant Bharti Airtel, which added 2.12 million users to take its subscriber base to 169.19 million users. Reliance Communications followed next with an addition of 2.1 million new subscribers, taking its subscriber base to 143.27 million. Vodafone added 2.1 million subscribers to take its total number of customers to 141.5 million. Idea Cellular added 1.36 million subscribers, increasing its subscribers count to 95.1 million while Uninor added 9,43,924 million subscribers to have 26.33 million subscribers. According to the data, the broadband subscriber base grew 1.64 percent from 12.12 million in May to 12.32 million in June 2011. However, the wireline segment declined marginally from 34.4 million in May to 34.29 million at the end of June.

Pierre Cardin PC-7006 7-inch multi-touch Designer Android Tablet

T

he designer and luxury brand Pierre Cardin , know for its pens and designer clothes , has launched their first ever gadget , a 7-inch tablet running the Android OS and powered by a 1GHz processor.

It does not comes with the latest version of the Android OS and also the specs are also not very exciting but it is good for the fashion savvy people who want to flaunt their stylish gadgets or who wants their gadgets to make a fashion statement.

J

esse Sullivan is better known as the world’s first bionic man. In 2001, the American electrician was acscidentally electrocuted. Both his arms had to be amputated at the shoulder. But about two months later, the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) gave him what was then one of its prototypes: a bionic arm. So Sullivan could hug his grandkids, hold a cup of water and drink from it, mow his lawn, and perform several such activities that many use their arms for everyday, without even thinking about it. Todd Kuiken, director of RIC’s Center for Bionic Medicine, who had pioneered the bionic arm that Sullivan uses today, explained to ET how it works. “We take the remaining nerves in an amputee and transfer these to the muscles that are still present. This allows us to get information on what the person ‘wants’ to do with the robotic arm,” says Kuiken. In a neural surgery , four of Sullivan’s nerves were dissected from his shoulder and transferred to the muscles in his chest. The grafted nerve endings could consequently then transfer impulses to muscles that are actually present --rather than to the amputated muscles, it was originally meant for -- thereby allowing Sullivan to move his robotic arm attachment just like his real arm.

A combination of biology and electronics

B

ionic is literally a combination of biology and electronics. It implies using engineering into our bodies, or as pop culture science fiction puts it: the merging of man and machine. Like the 1970s’ science fiction TV series The Six Million Dollar Man, bionics today is more than just a mechanical limb like the Jaipur Foot. New-age prosthetics are robotic, controlled by micro-computers, are heavily focussed on “sensing” and are working towards attaining thought-control. So, Sullivan can sense things like pressure, allowing him to perform tasks like fishing . He can hold a paper cup or a glass, just right, neither so hard that it breaks nor so loose that it crashes to the ground. He can sense like those with their real hands do. That’s also why Amanda Kitts is not just a bionic woman but a bionic mom. Kitts, who is the mother of a nineyear-old boy and runs three day care centers, lost her arm in a road accident. The RIC robotic arm’s advanced features like pressure sensing have helped her reclaim her life. Today, she can perform delicate tasks at her daycare like blowing bubbles, changing diapers, making cookie dough and of course hugging all of her day care kids safely, irrespective of their size. But prosthetics is neither affordable nor are these always covered by insurance. Each bionic surgery costs between $5,000 and $50,000 plus taxes, costs of trips to centers like RIC, and other costs. Global Industry Analysts (GIA), estimates the global orthopaedic prosthetics market will be $19.4 billion by 2015.

THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR BIONIC HUMAN

G

IA cites the rising incidence of degenerative joint diseases like osteoporosis and arthritis, aging global population and the desire for maintaining active lifestyles, as being the primary driving factors. War is just as vital a driver, as US Marines Greg Gadson -- who lost both of his legs in Iraq -- and John Cunningham -- who lost his arm -- will tell you. The computerised PowerKnees Gadson wears today, might not bring back his football days, but they certainly let him get out of the wheelchair, take a walk and even climb stairs. At John Hopkins University’s Applied Physics Laboratory (JHUAPL), scientists are building bionic limbs to give soldiers their lives back. Last summer, the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) awarded JHUAPL a $34.5-million contract to further develop and test on humans , its revolutionary modular prosthetic limb. At nine pounds, the prosthetic arm weighs as much as a typical human hand, looks like a natural one and most amazingly, acts like one! This limb uses tiny motors and a brain-controlled interface to offer 22 degrees of motion -- almost as dexterous as a natural arm -- including amazingly independent movement of each finger.

Does Indian TV Need Censorship?

F

OR a few days now, non-news channels across networks have been periodically running a strip that urges viewers to voice their complaints regarding the content, if any. This follows the formalisation of Broadcasting Content Complaints Council (BCCC), a central body that will address viewer complaints regarding “inappropriate content”. “Indian channels are responsible enough and don’t need a governing body such as the Censor Board of Film Certification to ensure that objectionable content is curbed. However, the BCCC now gives viewers a chance to complain if they find any content offensive,” says Uday Shankar, the president of Indian Broadcast Federation (IBF) and the CEO of Star India. Notwithstanding Shankar’s stance, Indian television has been showcasing a number of shows that may not fully comply with Indian sensibilities. This month, Mad Men and Californication, two popular American television shows, will premiere in India on Zee Café. Their content — with themes of drugs, sex and debauchery — is highly controversial. But on Indian television — with a few beeps to block out profanities and some blurring of cigarette butts — both the series have been scheduled to play out in the post-11 pm slots. “According to the content code provided to channels by the Information and Broadcast Ministry, the 11 pm slot is similar to the ‘A’ certification of film censoring, so the timings are mostly reserved for adult shows across most English channels,” says an official from Zee, on condition of anonymity. However, one does wonder how Dexter, with its display of blood and violence, made it to the 10 pm slot on Star World. Or, that while Modern Family’s animated promos with sexual themes play out all day, the show with “inoffensive” content, but a homosexual couple is pushed to 11pm. Yet, Hindi soaps with similar “scandalous tracks” make it to prime time slots. “It’s not so much the concept but the presentation that makes all the difference,” adds the Zee official. Discrepancies seem to be galore. That’s because television content isn’t monitored before telecast since there is no central censorship body. IBF is the only unifying

August 2011 Edition

factor. The channels operate by a thin set of I&B guidelines, aided by self-regulation rules that are specific to each channel. Most of the guidelines under Standards and Practices (S&P) include editing out extreme nudity and gore, beeping out cuss words and editing scenes involving gambling, smoking and drinking. Debates over censorship of television content have been on for years now. “Ever since international content began to pour in, saasbahu shows adopted Bold and the Beautifulesque themes. The reality shows too altered the nature of content on prime time television by bringing in rude and shocking content,” asserts TV producer Vinta Nanda. This emphasises the need to monitor TV content, especially since it has a far wider reach compared to cinema. Recognising this need, IBF formalised BCCC. This means channels will continue to follow their self-regulation guidelines. “We already beep out cuss words and soon, we will also blur out the mouth so that one can’t lip read. Channels self-edit international shows to make them fit for viewing on Indian television,” Shankar explains. However, the Zee official adds that in certain cases, channels find a loophole in the guidelines to get away. “So if you were wondering how the Delhi Belly song DK Bose played out without beeps, it’s because there is no rule to say that phrases which sound like profanity need editing too,” he says. At present, there is little in place to address offending of sensibilities. For example, most talent reality shows will allow the physically disabled to audition but after much drama, they are often evicted on the basis that they may be unable to go ahead due to “natural elimination”. But Shankar explains that BCCC intends to cover that aspect now. “We have included members from special interest groups on the panel to look into such complaints.” The key problem, however, lies in the fact that the content on television is to much too monitor. Shankar insists that IBF is doing as much as is possible to address viewers’ concerns without compromising on the creative freedom. “There may be no monitoring system but the complaint redressal mechanism should give us direction,” he says.

t Hosabale, a remote village in Shimoga district, pineapple wine could soon be made on a commercial scale. Manjunath Hegade (46), a pineapple grower, is knocking on the doors of the state excise department to get a licence to produce wine from pineapple. If he succeeds, Hosabale will have India’s first pineapple winery. Discovery Trail Experimenting at his makeshift brewery located on a sprawling 18-acre plot, Manjunath has successfully brewed a couple of barrels of pineapple wine in the last two years. Ecstatic over the results, Manjunath has sent a proposal along with the wine samples to the technical committee of the excise department, responsible for permitting liquor production from a new substance. “It is something new and being done for the first time in the country. We are analysing the samples in our laboratory before giving our nod for the actual production,” said Excise Minister M P Renukacharya. Anti-cancer Pineapple has medicinal properties and is commonly used in the Malnad area as a cure for various ailments. While tanning areca and tobacco, the major crops in this area, farmers develop mucous fibrosis which can eventually lead to cancer. But this can be prevented with pineapple. “Also, pineapple wine has bromelain enzyme which can act as an anti-cancer drug. Lalitha Mahal Palace, MysoreMysore is believed to be the corrupted form of ‘Mahishasurana Ooru’, which means ‘the town of Mahishasura’. According to a legend, Mahishasura was a wicked demon who had secured a boon for himself that no man could kill him. However, when his atrocities grew too much, Chamundeshwari, the Goddes and the patron deity of Mysore royalty killed him and freed the kingdom from his cruelty. The palaces and fragrant smells mark this erstwhile capital of Karnataka that blends perfectly with the clean, serene and easygoing aura of the city. The old world charm and rich aromas adorn the city. Imposing and magnificent palaces and monuments testify the rich heritage of the city with well-planned beautiful gardens and sacred temples. The Wodeyar family continues to enjoy the mark of royalty since 14th century except for the turbulent forty years in the late 18th century when Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan took over the city. Befitting the capital of Maharajas, Mysore has been carefully planned and has a distinctly native identity of a princely city. Besides the architectural heritage, Mysore has much to boast of including being the centre of fine arts such as music and dance, art and literature, a city of the learned and renowned scholars and skilled craftsmen, who flourished under the patronage of benevolent Wodeyar rulers.

Shopping Attractions:

The Mysore shopping highlights are sandalwood products, oil, and fine silk fabrics featuring the hand-woven silk sarees and garments along with rosewood and sandalwood handicrafts, copperware, stoneware, brassware, wooden furniture, sandalwood powder, perfumes and lacquer ware. Sayaji Rao Road is the best market place of the town. However, during the festival season, wares from all over the country are available here.

I have no regrets: Shriya Saran

P

ost the success of Sivaji, in which this young actress starred with Superstar Rajinikanth, Shriya seems to have had few good movies to boast of in Kollywood. With Rowthiram set for release, will the tide turn for Shriya? Some industry insiders say her bad luck started with Indiralogathil Na Azhagappan when she opted to do an item number with comedian Vadivelu. Ask her about this and she says nonchalantly, “One of the many things that I learnt from my mother is to never regret. I don’t look back. What I did then was part of my career and I don’t think I made a mistake. There are ups and downs in my career and I take both in my stride. There are lot of good things that happened to me in the industry and I’m very happy with the way my career has shaped up.”

M

iss India and “ Dil Dosti Etc” actress Nikita Anand is a self-confessed fitness freak. Such are her gymming skills that her act has many a times caused the other male members at her gym intimidating about her. In town for a promotional event, Nikita confirmed the news and said, “My instructor came up to me one day and asked me to slow down my daily workouts because it was intimidating the men who came there.” Talking about her fitness regime, she said, “I have a tremendous amount of will power. I can control any sort of temptation, so no bad or junk food for me. As far as my fitness regime is concerned, I do a mix of both - yoga and gym. Yoga gives you flexibility and gymming tones up your body.” 5’8” tall Nikita Anand won the Sunsilk Femina Miss India-Universe title in 2003. Nikita was born in Jalandhar and her father was a doctor in the army. As her father got transferred to different cities (Delhi, Ranchi, Mumbai, Pune) Nikita had to change her school many times. She got into modeling early in life with the dream to become a fashion designer eventually. Nikita has been hosting the popular car race show called NASCAR on Zee Sports. And she will make her Bollywood debut with a movie to be produced by Prakash Jha. In the audition for the film, Nikita excelled over a dozen other Bollywood aspirants to clinch the role. Anand began participating in beauty pageants at an early stage, and was even crowned as Miss Ranchi at the age of 13. She even went on a dietary regime when she was in class 10. While being a 2nd year student of NIFT Delhi, she won Femina Miss India contest in

2003. Her final question in the contest was whether she thinks that forgiveness is better said then done; to which she answered “To err is human, to forgive divine, and we have to forgive and move on to make life better.” She was crowned by preceding winner Neha Dhupia, and given the chance to represent India at the Miss Universe pageant in Panama City, Panama. However, she failed to place breaking India’s 11 year streak of placing in the Top 10 from 1992 to 2002. At the Miss Universe contest, her national costume and ethnic dresses were designed by Ritu Kumar, while Ashley Rebello put together her evening gown and western outfits. She was also helped by Dr. Sandesh Mayekar (dental care), Dr. Jamuna Pai (skin care), Bharat and Doris Godambe (hair and make-up), Dr. Anjali Mukherjee (diet), Finesse Shoes, New Delhi (shoes), Sabira Merchant (speech and diction), and IDEA (Integrated Dance Exercise Academy, physical fitness). After doing stints of modeling for print, walking the ramp, and anchoring shows on fast cars and cricket on television, she debuted in Bollywood in movie Dil Dosti Etc. Her costar in the movie was Shreyas Talpade and she played the role of Prerna, an outgoing college student.[8] Although the movie received mixed to negative reviews, her performance was appreciated by Taran Adarsh who went on to say that she has the trappings of a fine actress. She then signed Ek Second... Jo Zindagi Badal De? and Nileish Malhotra’s Monopoly - The Game Of Money where she worked with Manisha Koirala and Zeenat Aman respectively. While the former was released in 2010, and received negative reviews; the latter has been delayed.

I don’t know how they manage to do sex before marriage: Sridevi “I don’t think we are anywhere close to coBorn as Shree Amma Yanger on Aug 13, 1963, Sridevi started her acting career as a child artist at the age of four in Tamil movie Kandan Karunai. Besides acting in numerous Tamil, Telegu and Malayalam films, she literally ruled Bollywood (Hindi film industry) in 1980s and early 1990s with films like Mr India, Nagina, Sadma, Tohfa, Aakhree Raasta, Chaalbaaz, Lamhe and Khuda Gawah. She also acted in television serial Malini Iyer in 2004-05. She married producer Boney Kapoor in 1996 and has two daughters Jhanvi and Khushi. She will reportedly make a comeback in films with Gauri Shinde’s debut flick titled English Vinglish. Excerpts from her interviews given to various magazines and newspapers over the years:

In fact the first time I was away from my parents for a long time was during the shooting of Gurudev, Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja and Lamhe which were shot back to - back, overseas. Every morning before I left for my shoot, I made sure I spoke to my parents, they called me without fail. One particular morning, I never got a call from my father and the next thing I was told that he was ill, but the truth was that he was no more... and the same thing happened at the time of my mother’s death - I was away on a shoot for the filming of Judaai when she passed away. My mother had always thought of me as her son , she used to tell me that. My lighting the funeral pyre was simply my way of paying homage to her belief in me. It was a traumatic and emotional decision but I had to do it.

Sridevi on cinema:

Sridevi on love:

Cinemas was, has and always will be a major part of my life. It has made me the person I am today and I do not know a life apart from movies. It’s true that I did take a break for a while, but that was to tend to my children and my family. Even then, I was always active with Boney’s production company.

Sridevi on her parents: My parents were lovely people, they installed good manners in me, taught me to respect elders and always guided me.

I wouldn’t know how important the emotion love is to the kids of today. Love for me is not just saying ‘I love you’ neither is it physical attraction. Love does exist. And there are some people who do believe that virginity is the most prized possession a woman takes with her to her husband’s house after she is married. What’s wrong with that? But yes, it seems to have become a trend to have a lot of affairs and indulge in sex before marriage. I would never be able to do it. I don’t know how they manage.

s Anna Hazare continues his fight against corruption in the real world, we have got Mussaddi Lal Tripathi (Pankaj Kapur) taking on corruption in the reel world through CHALA MUSSADDI-OFFICE OFFICE. The film is the adaptation of the serial Office Office, which was loved by one and all. The basic characters from the serial and their peculiar traits remain the same. Mussaddi Lal Tripathi (Pankaj Kapoor) plays the common man. Pandey (Hemant Pandey) gets terribly annoyed if someone doesn’t add ji to his name. Bhatia (Manoj Pahwa) is the gluttonous food-loving officer. Patel (Devan Bhojani) explains things in his do batein hongi style. Shukla (Sanjay Mishra) is the perpetually paan-eating peon, who spits just about everywhere. Ushaji (Asawari Joshi) prefers Jamuna Bank Limited

Retired schoolmaster Mussaddi Lal Tripathi loses his wife (played by Farida Jalal) due to the careless attitude of the doctors in a Delhi hospital. As Mussaddi was unable to fulfil his wife’s wish of visiting the char dhams (Holy sites) when she was alive, he along with his unemployed son Bunty (Gaurav Kapoor) leaves for the char dhams to immerse her ashes. While he is away, government officials Bhatia and Patel erroneously declare him dead in the pension files. On his return, Mussaddi is traumatised to find that he’s dead on paper. As bizarre as it may sound, he must prove that he is alive to get his

Synopsis CHALA MUSSADDI OFFICE OFFICE initially seems like watching the serial Office Office on the big screen. It takes some time for the actual story to start. But once it does, you are completely involved with Mussaddi’s crusade against corruption. At one point, he says in a police station that his crime is that he is a common man. You feel

Sahi Dhandhe Galat Bande Yaara O Dildaara

for his predicament and completely relate with his character in this satire. Like A WEDNESDAY, it shows what difference a common man can make if he takes things in his own hands. There are enough light-hearted moments to keep you entertained. The climax, though a bit contrived, is sure to leave with a lump in your throat. Manish Jaitly’s editing could have been tighter in the first half. SajidWajid’s music is fine. Carlton D’Mello’s cinematography is nice. Pankaj Kapoor is fabulous and extremely believable as Mussaddi. Watch out for the India Gate scene just before the climax. Gaurav Kapoor acts really well. Hemant Pandey is good. Manoj Pahwa is underutilised. Devan Bhojani is excellent. Sanjay Mishra acts wonderfully. Asawari Joshi is decent. CHALA MUSSADDI OFFICE OFFICE is an effective satire that takes on the menace of corruption. Don’t miss it.

Kangna booted out of Dutt camp. Has their friendship gone sour? B

uzz is that her friendship with Sanjay and Maanayata has soured after she declined two films with the actor While it has been widely reported that Kangna Ranaut opted out of Ram Gopal Varma’s Department to do Vishal Bhardwaj’s sequel of Ishqiya, there seems to be more to her exit than meets the eye. The latest is that she was ousted from RGV’s movie for declining two films with Sanjay Dutt (who plays the lead in Department). And that’s also why she apparently wasn’t invited for his wife Maanayata’s birthday party last month, though they are believed to be good friends. A well-paced source reveals that the first movie Kangna refused with Dutt was his next home production, the remake of Satte Pe Satta. “Even though she gets along very well with Sanjay, Kangna felt that she should space out her films with him, lest they get too repetitive, “ says our informer, adding that this refusal wasn’t taken too unkindly by the Dutt camp.

My wife doesn’t get bothered with all the kissing: Emraan Hashmi C

ontrary to his onscreen playboy image, Emraan Hashmi is quite a family man. He spends every free minute with his little boy, Ayaan and basks in his wife, Parveen, appreciation of his films. And he’s quick to add that she doesn’t mind him doing steamy scenes. But what she does poke fun at is the fact that little Ayaan can’t watch any of his daddy’s films till he is an adult. The otherwise reserved Emraan, who has a number of films due for release this year, gets talking to CS:

Race to India’s Sexiest Bachelor: John knows what women want!

On cloud nine Obviously, I am very elated about the success of my latest film. I went to Gaiety in Bandra and watched the film with the audience. It was fun sitting quietly in the back row with Parveen (my wife) watching the film and the audience’s reaction. I am glad that my wife liked it too. And no, she doesn’t get bothered with all the kissing scenes (laughs). But honestly, I have been so busy that I haven’t had time to celebrate the success with my family or friends.

Not kidding In fact, I’ve been too busy to unwind too. Frankly, I don’t get much time to watch films. In theatres, I

H

watch only English films and my own projects. I might sound narcissistic, but I don’t take time out to watch the regular Bollywood fare. I am a huge fan of science fiction, horror and thrillers. I like watching anything that is bizarre -- think Psycho, American Psycho and Seven.

Given a chance, I would love to essay Anthony Hopkins role in Silence Of The Lambs. But for now, I want to star in a film that my son (Ayaan) can watch as a kid. My wife complains that he can’t see any of my films till he turns at least 16. I want to do a children’s film, but something a little offbeat.

e might have broken off with his long-time girlfriend Bipasha Basu, but Bollywood hunk John Abraham knows what a woman wants in her man. The 38-year-old actor is one of the competitors of the “India’s Sexiest Bachelor” show that will go on air at the end of this month on BIG CBS PRIME. A source from the show revealed what dating tips the “Jism” actor gives to men. “Women are not lured by materialistic things any more. Good looks, great physique and a fat bank balance are not a sure-shot way to a woman’s heart. What touches a woman’s heart is a man with an even bigger heart - a good deed a day will have her closer to your heart!” the source quoted John as saying. The show which has been conceptualised by BIG LIVE, the intellectual properties division of Reliance Broadcast Network Ltd, is an initiative that will see “10 of India’s sexiest men” on one platform, allowing for viewers to select their sexiest preference through public voting. John will compete with nine other hot and sexy contestants like Saif Ali Khan, Ranveer Singh and Virat Kohli.

Kareena wants her song to be hotter than Kat’s I

s she upset over Salman’s decision to rope in Katrina for a song in ‘Bodyguard’?

Katrina Kaif might be the reigning item queen of Bollywood, but Kareeena Kapoor’s not the one to feel cornered in her own film. Apparently when Kareena got to know about this much hyped song shoot with Salman and Katrina, she stepped up and demanded a hotter number. A source says, “When both Kareena and Katrina’s songs will be released, there is definitely going to be comparison between the two. So Kareena wants to be prepared. The song ‘Teri meri prem kahani’ that has been shot over the past few days in three different locations is one of the sexiest songs Kareena has ever shot and she wanted it to be that way.” The song is quintessentially Bollywood as it gets the heroine dancing under the rain in a translucent sari. Interestingly, Teri Meri Prem Kahani is the theme track of the film. And though it’s hardly an item number, there are portions of the song, which have now been designed to look like one. This is the first time Kat and Bebo’s professional rivalry is out in the open, though the two A-listers have always been pitted against each other in some way or the other. According to a source, “Apparently Salman’s decision to rope in Katrina for a song in Bodyguard did not go down well with Kareena from the very beginning. Even on Katrina’s birthday, she dropped in to meet Salman only after Bebo left the scene.” Both Kareena and Katrina denied the story.

Just like Shah Rukh, Mr. Bachchan was so nice to me: Deepika Padukone A fter an eventful 2010 where Deepika had as many as five of her films arriving in quick succession, she also gained in her personal life with love coming her way. Now that she is resuming her campaign with Aarakshan, Deepika talks nineteen to the dozen about Saif, Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan and then of course Siddharth Mallaya.

On her return with Saif after Love Aaj Kal... It didn’t matter if Saif and I were romancing in Love Aaj Kal and are now a part of a more dramatic journey in Aarakshan. And come on, even Love Aaj Kal didn’t have us playing quintessential romantic souls. Remember how we broke up in the very opening sequence of the film? On her film dealing with a rather dry subject of reservation... I guess it is futile to pass judgement before checking out what Aarakshan actually has to offer. In any case, if you look at my track record, I have done a number of such films which have been meaningful but then within commercial parameters. A film can be entertaining even without those regular song and dance affairs.

August 2011 Edition

On her confidence in Aarakshan...

Whether a film is in the right direction or not is something that you get to know only on a Friday when it releases. However, one thing that I am very sure of is that the team’s intentions are quite good here. If that wasn’t the case, people like Prakashji, Mr. Bachchan and Saif wouldn’t have come together. On her journey that has spanned from Shah Rukh Khan (Om Shanti Om) to now Amitabh Bachchan (Aarakshan) Just like Shah Rukh had done so much for me in Om Shanti Om, even Mr. Bachchan was so nice to me. He made me very-very comfortable. However, even as the camera is rolling and you are mouthing your dialogues, you are constantly wondering if he is judging your performance. Really, it is indeed a big deal to be actually looking into his eyes and mouthing your dialogues. Trust me, it isn’t easy. On love and Siddharth Mallaya

I don’t like to hide facts and even earlier I presumed that when I would talk about a relationship of mine, media will respect my privacy. Unfortunately, it doesn’t always work out well. This is the reason why I am a lot more conscious now about making any announcements related to my personal life.

ven when you think anything that Rakhi Sawant does or says can’t shock you, she drops another bomb. Now she says she is keen to marry the yoga exponent, controversial figure, Baba Ramdev. She has recently confessed that she likes him. Earlier Rahul Gandhi was her dream man but she has now changed her choice to Baba. Quite a varied taste we must say. Is it any surprise that the girl decides to make this shocking statement, just before the launch of her new show? The queen of all controversies has made yet another controversial statement. Rakhi Sawant in a recent interview has said that she was willing to marry when Baba Ramdev was ready to wed her.

Final ‘Harry Potter’ crosses $1 billion mark

The final ‘Harry Potter’ film ‘Deathly Hallows 2’ has become a part of the exclusive billion dollar club. ‘Deathly Hallows’ has earned USD 1.01 billion as of Sunday, including a domestic total of USD 318.5 million and international cume of USD 690 million. The pic tied the record for the fastest climb to USD 1 billion, accomplishing the task in only 17 days. The film also is the top grossing film in Warner history worldwide, the Hollywood Reporter said. ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’ is also in the race to join the club. The film’s worldwide collection rose to USD 983 million over the weekend, including a domestic total of USD 337.9 million and international

haul of USD 645 million. As with Deathly Hallows 2, Dark of the Moon will become the first title in its respective franchise to hit USD 1 billion in global grosses. The billion dollar club include ‘Avatar’ (USD 2.8 billion), ‘Titanic’ (USD 1.8 billion), ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King’ (USD 1.11 billion), ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest’ (USD1.07 billion), ‘Toy Story 3’ (USD 1.06 billion), ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’ (USD 1.03 billion), ‘Alice in Wonderland’ (USD 1.02 billion), ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2’ (USD 1.01 billion) and The Dark Knight (USD 1.00 billion).

Freida Pinto, boyfriend Dev reach ‘understanding’ to prioritise career

‘Slumdog Millionaire’ star Freida Pinto has revealed that she and her actor boyfriend Dev Patel have reached the ‘understanding’ that they should prioritise their career more than their relationship. “We’ve arrived at a situation where understanding is primary,” Contactmusic quoted her as telling the Independent. “Now we don’t need to Skype all the time, we don’t need to talk every day over the phone. “It’s just understanding that OK, he’s doing a film right now, so today is gonna be a busy day for him, he’ll call me up tomorrow...” she added. The 26-year-old actress has been dating Patel for the last two years.

“ Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes ” is ape-solutely wonderful Cast: James Franco, Andy Serkis

and Freida Pinto

Director: Rupert Wyatt Rating: **** Every revolution has three phases: rampant injustice, germination of revolt against it, and full-fledged revolution usually led by someone. “Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes” (ROTPOTA) chronicles these stages, reminding us to be grateful that animals perhaps cannot rise up against brutal humans who butcher them in the millions everyday even when they can eat other foods. Caesar, a genetically modified ape who’s been secretly raised by a scientist Will Rodman (James Franco), grows up with an intelligence exceeding human’s. After being confined with other apes, like the Buddha he witnesses injustice for the first time. He unifies other apes, and rises up against the ruthless humans. Hollywood has a history of action films full of computer generated imagery (CGI) but lacking basic imagination. ROTPOTA is surprisingly good in almost every department making it one of the most perfect commercial films ever. Action films are not simply the display of violence. They are essentially about humanism and feelings whose subjugation finds expression in physical violence. Thus,

August 2011 Edition

the violence outside becomes a metaphor and a physical representation of the violence inside and is a statement against the rampant injustice that causes it in the first place. External violence is thus shaped by internal conflict. Most filmmakers don’t understand this and though one does not need to know this to like an action film, the disproportionate nature of internal vs external violence makes for a far less satisfying film. Director Rupert Wyatt understands this

perfectly and though he could have gone overboard, considering the potential the story presents, he exercises restraint making ROTPOTA that much more enduring. Despite its predictable plot, there are so many parallels, allegories and metaphors in the film that it’s a delight for discerning viewers. In Caesar we have the representation of a typical revolutionary and unlike many real revolutionaries he displays rare humanism and regard for life.

The true core of Caesar is love for his apekind and not the hatred of those who brutalise his kind. Thus, the fact that the ape Caesar is more human than most people is a satire on entire humankind. When he refuses to kill even when he can, he rises higher in his morality than every single human in the world who eats animals that are as living and feeling as humans are. Frieda Pinto tries hard to imitate the accent of a South American. Thankfully, she is meant only to be an eye-candy. James Franco, expectedly, is good but the winner is CGI. All the apes in the film exist only on the computer. But to get right so many facial expressions makes all the difference in the film and brings the apes alive in the viewer’s imagination. It is Caesar’s expressions that give representation to the fact that his humanism exceeds his superior intelligence, again unlike most humans. In terms of the Planet of The Apes franchisee, it is similar to the fourth film - “Conquest Of The Planet of the Apes”. Those following the film closely will see a foreshadowing of the first Charlton Heston movie, which will perhaps follow ROTPOTA, either immediately or after a few films. In essence though, this has the humanism of “The Elephant Man” and is the closest any film in the franchisee has come to the basic premise of the first film, revolution against injustice and the stupidity of humans.

In the past 12 months, India has lost nine ODIs, including its last two ODIs against eighth ranked West Indies and one in the group stages of the ICC Cricket World Cup. (Reuters)

W

orld champions India have slipped to third place in the ICC ODI team rankings after an annual update of the list in which Australia have extended their lead at the top to 12 points. Despite capturing the World Cup 2011, India fell behind runners-up Sri Lanka in the updated rankings. “This is due to the fact that in the 2008-09 rating year, now dropped, India won 17 ODIs and lost only five games, which was easily the best record during that period. “In the same year Australia won 11 and lost 11 ODIs and so now Michael Clarke’s side are no longer penalised for that relatively poor year,” the ICC explained in a statement.

“In the past 12 months, India has lost nine ODIs, including its last two ODIs against eighth ranked West Indies and one in the group stages of the ICC Cricket World Cup, and has a win-loss ratio that is poorer than World Cup finalists Sri Lanka and quarterfinalists Australia and South Africa,” it added. Meanwhile, Australia captain Michael Clarke says he is determined for his side to maintain its lead at the top of the table. Clarke said that his side is looking to maintain its position in the table. “This Australian side is extremely proud to be ranked the number one one-day side in the world. However, we realise there is some significant work to be done if this is to remain the case,” said Clarke.

“Being knocked out of the ICC Cricket World Cup at the quarterfinal stage was very disappointing and our group has already started its planning to reclaim the title on our home shores. This summer in Australia will be a great stepping stone towards this aim as we take on World Cup champions India and runners-up Sri Lanka in a return of the tri-series competition throughout Australia,” he added. The annual rankings update is carried out to ensure the ODI Championship table continues to reflect recent form. As such, the new table only includes results from matches played after August 1 2009, with older results from between August 1 2008 - July 31 2009 being discarded.

Indians settle for three silver medals I

nconsistency coupled with some sloppy finishes cost the Indian archers dear as they lost all their matches in the final to settle for three silver medals in the Archery World Cup in Ogden, USA. The Indians figured in three finals and one bronze medal play-off in the recurve section events held on Friday, but in could not register a win on the penultimate day, according to information received here. The country’s gold medal hope now rests on women’s trio of Jhano Hansdah, Gagandeep Kaur and Manjudha Soy, who have made it to a World Cup final in the compound section for the first time. They will take on the host’s trio of Erika Anschutz, Christie Colin and

August 2011 Edition

Jamie van Natta in the summit clash. In what could have been a hat-trick of gold medals for promising teen archer Deepika Kumari turned out to be a flop show as she lost both her individual as well as team finals with some inconsistent performances. In the mixed pair final, Deepika’s partner Talukdar let her down by running out of time in his last arrow, to pick a zero that virtually crowned their American opponents. The women’s recurve team of Deepika, Laishram Bombayla Devi and Chekrovolu Swuro began the Indian campaign on a sorry note when they lost to their opponents from Ukraine 213-210 to settle for silver. Ukraine became India’s nemesis

yet again when the fancied men’s recurve trio of Jayanta Talukdar, Thupuvoyi Swuro and Viswash lost by an identical margin in the bronze play-off. The 17-year-old Ranchi girl was overwhelmed by top seed Ming Cheng of China with some neat performance to settle for a silver in the women’s recurve. In the mixed recurve final, Deepika and Talukdar began the first end with a three point (36-33) lead over Miranda Leek and Brady Ellison of the US. But the American duo made a flying comeback in the second end with four perfect 10s to total 73 (40+33). On the other hand, it was a disaster of sorts for the Indians when Talukdar could not shoot his last arrow on time to slump to 26 for a total of 62.

Where is Team India’s aura?

F

Team Indian

A

fter being at the top for two years, India may not have expected their world to turn topsy-turvy in just two weeks; but the defeats at Lord’s and Trent Bridge have done exactly that, leaving them virtually down in the dumps. It showed rather alarmingly in their body language here at the Edgbaston ground on Monday morning as they prepared for the remaining two Tests. Being back-to-back matches, India won’t even find the time, space or energy to regroup or revitalize from any major setback. They need to win both the games, with the first starting on Wednesday, to hang on edgily to their World No. 1 ranking. But one more defeat and England will catapult over South

August 2011 Edition

Africa, from No. 3 to No. 1. It is the final stretch for both, the champions and the contenders. In such a scenario, you would have hoped - if not expected - the players to show a little more enthusiasm, if not passion, in their penultimate training session; it was glaringly missing, though, as they went through the routine in a lackadaisical manner. England, on the other hand, looked that much more desperate and fervent in their approach. Like always, the morning began with a light looseningup session; it quickly dissolved into the mandatory football game but the players were barely kicked about it. The bonhomie or even the desire to go one-up was conspicuously missing as they scrambled after the ball

A Lord’s 100 at last for Rahul Dravid

listlessly. Where had the confidence, if not the aura, evaporated? If that was not enough, they trooped away from the stunning ground towards the “nets” in ones and twos. Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir and Rahul Dravid took guard quickly enough and Munaf Patel, Praveen Kumar and Amit Mishra bowled at them, with support from local bowlers and fielding coach Trevor Penny. The others, however, seemed least interested. If Ishant Sharma sat in one corner, Abhinav Mukund was in another. Sachin Tendulkar quietly padded up, keeping an eye on Dravid’s footwork. Virat Kohli walked around aimlessly while Suresh Raina was not his usual energetic self either. Mahendra Singh Dhoni, after showing his fast bowling skills in the first Test, worked on his spinning abilities. Maybe, he realizes that he may need to back this up now in the absence of Harbhajan Singh. Pragyan Ojha, who finally joined the team, seemed in his own world too. All the others who are likely to figure in the playing XI had a go with their bats, including Virat Kohli. Mukund, who scored a hundred in the practice game, didn’t even bother to pad up, which means he is not in the reckoning at all. There was no sign of Sreesanth for the most part either. Clearly, this team is not just dispirited; it is too low on confidence and will need a miracle or a standout performance by someone to make a comeback. Sadly, Edgbaston is not the best place for such a turnaround. India’s record here, even when it used to be a batting track, is dismal. Now, of course, it has a tinge of green and promises to be pacy and helpful to England’s attack. Maybe, that’s why they are already down in the dumps.

ifteen years later on a glorious summery afternoon, arguably the prettiest batsman that the cricketing world has seen finally got to his first century at the Mecca of cricket – Lord’s. Rahul Dravid could have achieved this landmark in his debut Test in 1996 but fell 5 runs short and he had to live with that for fifteen long years. On day three of the First Test between England and India, to say he thought about it when he walked out on to the pith, would be an understatement. Of course, he must have had that 95 figure looming large in front of his eyes. And when he was dropped on 42 his heart must have skipped many a beat. But all that is in the past and today Rahul Dravid has the distinguished honour of being the second highest run scorer in Test cricket (12417 runs) and of course, getting his name etched on the Lord’s honours board. An amazing achievement at a time when his more illustrious teammate hogs the limelight, for scoring the most number of runs ever (14726), the master at 5 feet 5 inches - Sachin Tendulkar. Dravid has always lived in the shadow of ‘others’. Not a position he chose but what destiny gave him. Tirelessly, he plays for the country in all the international formats. Over time he has earned the pseudonym of ‘the Wall’ for his dogged determination to stay at the crease in the longest version of the game. But most of all ‘Rahul Dravid batting clips’ would form a crucial part of the coaching manual for youngsters as to how to play those ‘perfect’ shots. Be it the charismatic cover drive, or the scintillating straight drive and those elegant square cuts, just some of the Dravid repertoire. Dravid may not be the most exciting batsman but he is the most solid you would ever find. Given the character of Test cricket being a deep and insightful version, Dravid’s style of batting fits in to the scheme of things beautifully. For cricket lovers the world over, watching the likes of Rahul play is like applying a soothing balm on a painful knee. And his recent most 100, his 33rd in Tests was a delight to watch despite the one life that he got when he was on 42(a number associated with being the Ultimate answer to the Ultimate question in life). That’s cricket, and life really. In typical Rahul Dravid style at the press conference post his century, the 38 year old was his dead pan serious self, and sported no euphoria. A trait perhaps Dravid could work on, for even though he says he goes through life normally, the happiness, the passion the raw joy seldom appears on that Dravid visage. And this was his reaction to that 15 year wait at Lord’s for a 100. “ ... to miss out on my first Test match, to miss out on a hundred here fifteen years ago, it was something that did stay with me a little bit. It’s not that if I hadn’t got this hundred here, it would have been the end of the world. That’s fine, it happens… there are a lot of great names on that board and it is one of the most talked about honours boards by international players across the world, so it’s nice to be on it.” Unassuming, intelligent and oozing grace and finesse, Rahul Dravid will always be remembered as the man who silently achieved greatness. Perhaps a tad too quietly. www.indian-times.com.au

SCIATICA (Gridrasi) PAIN:

AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT

Dr. C.R.S. Kumar What to Eat and Drink Sciatica is one of the most painful condition that usually accompanied by lower back pain. The common symptoms of sciatica are radiating pain shoots along the sciatic nerve (That is down towards the legs). Mostly the pain will be single sided; very rarely this will radiate down towards both the legs. This is mainly due to the herniation of lumbar discs, which in turn puts pressure on the sciatic nerve and causes radiating pain. The other causes for sciatica include irritation of sciatic nerve from adjacent bone, tumours, muscle, internal bleeding and injuries. The symptoms mainly includes pain, burning sensation, tingling sensation and numbness radiating from lower back and upper buttock down the back of thigh to back of legs. According to Ayurveda Sciatica is related to Gridrasi Vata. According to Ayurveda the Sciatica is a result of vitiation of Vata dosha. Sciatica pain or back pain can be caused by an accident or an injury to the spine, degenerative, metabolic or congenital disease, or it may be the result of developmental problems or a tumor. Among these causes mainly back pain is caused due to poor posture habit. Diseases such as osteoporosis, scoliosis, spinal stenosis, muscle strain, ruptured intervertebral disc, (Herniated disc) arthritis and spondylolisthesis (disc slip) are the major causative factors for the back ache. Other factors such as overweight, wearing high heeled shoes and lifting heavy weight are also responsible for backache. Ayurvedic Treatment: It is better to detect the Sciatica pain or low back pain in the early stages to prevent further progression with the help of Ayurvedic medicine. Ayurvedic treatment is done according to individual body constitution and

accordingly following life style modifications will help to get better relief from the low back pain. Treatment in Ayurveda is to bring the vitiated vata dosha back to the state of equilibrium to achieve optimal health benefits. Risk of dying or surviving from a heart attack can be predicted I

t is possible to predict whether someone will survive or die suddenly from a heart attack, according to a new research. Researchers have found that some traits, such as hypertension, race/ethnicity, body mass index (BMI), heart rate, and additional markers that can be identified by an electrocardiogram (ECG) can differentiate between dying suddenly

versus living through a heart attack. “For some people, the first heart attack is more likely to be their last,” said Elsayed Z. Soliman, M.D., M.Sc., M.S., director of the Epidemiological Cardiology Research Center (EPICARE) at Wake Forest Baptist and lead author of the study. “For these people especially, it is important

that we find ways to prevent that first heart attack from ever happening because their chances of living through it are not as good.” Millions of people succumb to sudden cardiac death every year, caused by coronary heart disease. “Since sudden cardiac death usually occurs before patients ever make it to the hospital, there

ew research has suggested that mimicry may not always lead to positive social outcomes. In fact, sometimes the smarter thing to do is to refrain. A study Piotr Winkielman and Liam Kavanagh of the psychology department at the University of California, San Diego, along with philosophers Christopher Suhler and Patricia Churchland, also of UC San Diego, noted that in real-life situations there are often observers to the mirroring that takes place between two people. This led them to wonder whether mimicry sometimes comes at a reputational

cost. Are there cases in which an observer might actually think less of a person for mirroring the behaviour of another? Results of three experiments suggested that mimicry is more nuanced than previously thought and not, the authors wrote, “uniformly beneficial to the mimicker.” “Mimicry is a crucial part of social intelligence,” said Winkielman, UC San Diego professor of psychology. “But it is not enough to simply know how to mimic. It’s also important to know when and when not to. The success of mirroring depends on mirroring the right people at the right time for the right reasons.

Sometimes the socially intelligent thing to do is not to imitate,” added Winkielman. Our social lives are incredibly complex, said Winkielman, and in order to build or maintain relationships we have to keep in mind a variety of factors. “It’s good to have the capacity to mimic,” he said, “but an important part of social intelligence is knowing how to deploy this capacity in a selective, intelligent, context-dependent manner, and understanding, even implicitly, when mirroring can reflect badly on you.” The study will be detailed in Psychological Science.

is very little that can be done to save them,” Soliman said. “Identifying specific predictors that separate the risk of sudden cardiac death from that of non-fatal or not immediately fatal heart attacks would be the first step to address this problem,” he added.

scientific research has suggested that social isolation, in the long term, is as damaging as a 15-a-day cigarette habit or being an alcoholic.

Many other studies have found that those with a poor social network are at increased risk of dementia and high blood pressure. The studies reason that the genes we need to fight off serious viral infections seem to be less active in the lonely than in the rest of the population, and that loneliness may cause cancer or heart disease. “Feeling alone and unloved can also make it harder to sleep and even speed the progression of dementia. When time takes its toll on the body, loneliness steepens that slope of descent,” the Daily Mail quoted Chicagobased psychologist John Cacioppo, who has studied the phenomenon, as saying. His work found that loneliness raises levels of the stress hormone cortisol and can push blood pressure up into the danger zone for heart attacks and strokes.

DYSLEXIA – Not a laziness >>

n this issue, lets look into Dyslexia. Ilearning Dyslexia is one of the most common disabilities and about 4% of

there may be no need to give all these disorders different names or even different treatments because if you bring it all down to the molecular level, what’s happening is the exact same biochemical malfunction.

children over the world suffer from it.

UNDERSTANDING DYSLEXIA:

Standard medication includes ‘Ritalin’ a drug whose toxicology is very similar and almost identical to that of Cocaine. This has short and long term side effects on the child’s health and mind.

Dyslexia is a learning disability. Dyslexia manifests as difficulty to read, write and spell. Although Dyslexia is the result of a neurological difference, it is not an intellectual disability. Dyslexia occurs at all levels of intelligence. It is biological in origin, it tends to run in families, but environmental factors such as nutrition also contribute. Some famous people have had Dyslexia; one of them was Albert Einstein. It is important to understand that Dyslexic kids are not dumb or lazy, they just learn differently.

EXPLAINING DYSLEXIA AND CAUSES: The word dyslexia comes (“impaired”) and ‘lexis’ (“word”).

Our brain constantly collects every message from all senses, processes them and tells us what to do. If someone has Dyslexia, then the collecting part of the brain gets the seeing and hearing messages muddled up so that the brain can’t work things out correctly and is not sure what to do. This means that the child feels confused and gets upset trying to work out what are the right messages. It is believed that dyslexia results from differences in how the brain processes written and/or spoken language. Dyslexia is an inherited condition which appears to affect more boys than girls and the genetic component has been found to play an important role in the development of this condition. Many people with Dyslexia have also found to be deficient in omega-3 unsaturated fatty acids.

Dyslexia is a constitutional disorder, as it is an outcome of a constitutional problem (genetic factors). Homoeopathy is definitely recommended for the management of Dyslexia. Speech therapy along with Homeopathy helps children overcome Dyslexia strongly and to help children cope up with their problems in a better way.

SYMPTOMS : Dyslexia can occur at any level of intellectual ability. It is not the result of poor motivation, emotional disturbance, sensory impairment or lack of opportunities, but it may occur alongside any of these.

Since the problems are at multiple levels, Homeopaths usually recommend a holistic approach using-

Dyslexia is most commonly characterized by difficulties with short term memory, learning, spelling, reading accurately and fluently, absence of sound-letter association (the very principle of alphabets!), mathematical difficulty, reversal or transposing of letters when writing, difficulty in writing, copying, confusion between letters such as b, d, p, q, especially in childhood, Not remembering or understanding what they just read, difficulty repeating, mixing up left and right, poor personal organization skills .

• Remedial Teacher (provides educational inputs through various special techniques keeping in view the child’s perceptual difficulties.)

HOMEOPATHIC TREATMENT: The top most challenging behavioural disorders a parent may have to face will be Autism, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Dyspraxia and Dyslexia. Neuroscientists have started to believe that

• Homoeopathic remedies

• Occupational Therapist (stimulates the system and helps to bring about moderation in the aberrations of the sensitivity. Here sensory integration therapy is very helpful). • Speech Therapist (helps in speech and language development). • Psychologist (assessment and counselling). • Yoga (for physical activity, mind control and stress relief etc). All modalities may or may not be used at the same time depending on the nature of the child’s ailment. The right Homeopathic remedy will set the child’s development and recovery into action. Patience and correct timely medicine intake is essential.

HELP THROUGH DIET: As discussed before, diet plays a vital role in preventing or treating any disease and certainly Dyslexia is not an exception. Eliminate foods with synthetic food colourings and flavourings, salicylate-rich foods such as tomatoes, junk food, excessive amounts of sugar and synthetic food additives (such as those described as “E” numbers). Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, learning difficulties and ADHD all involve poor nerve cell communications in the brain, and essential fats are crucial in keeping neurons talking to each other. Supplement their diet with essential fatty acids from unpolluted fish or flaxseed oils. A diet high in fresh fruits and green vegetables can help the ability to concentrate. Discuss suitable diet for your child with your medical practitioner.

HELP FROM FRIENDS AND FAMILY: It is most important for the child to have confidence in the parent so they can come up and discuss their problems and difficulties. It is up to the parent to develop that healthy relationship with their child. Show lots of support. Give them the confidence and appreciate. Most of all, be patient and empathetic. Most Dyslexic people are visual, multidimensional thinkers. They are intuitive and highly creative, and excel at hands-on learning. With the support of family, friends, good food and safe medical treatment, they can learn to read, write and they will excel in anything they wish to do.
