Enrolment of women in higher education increases

T

he number of women students enrolling for higher education in India has shot up, and Kerala stands second in terms of enrolment. Women enrolment in higher education which was less than 10% of the total enrolment on the eve of Independence has risen to 41.5% in the academic year 2010-11. Out of 169.75 lakh students enrolled in higher education

September 2012 Edition

in 2010-11, almost 70.49 lakh were women as compared to just about 47.08 lakh women enrolled in 2006-07, reveals the University Grants Commission (UGC) report. Among the states, Goa with 61.2% topped in terms of women enrolment followed by Kerala (56.8%), Meghalaya (51.8%) and Nagaland (50.5%). But there is bad news for the state. Though Kerala is amongst the

17 states which had higher enrolment of women than the national percentage of 41.5%, the state has actually witnessed a decline in enrolment of women in higher education in the last academic year as compared to those who enrolled in 2006-07. “We will have to study the data to understand whether this decline is due to demographic shrinking or because more women are opting for vocational streaminstead

of going for graduation,” said higher education principal secretary K M Abraham. he enrolment position of women students enrolled for Master’s level courses has been 12% while a very small proportion, that’s 0.8% of the total number of students had been enrolled for research. Similarly, only one per cent of the total number of students had been enrolled in diploma or certificate courses.

At the end of the fourth year of XIth Plan (2007-2012), the number of universities has gone up to 523 (43 central, 130 deemed and 345 state universities and five institutions established under Special State Legislature Acts) and the number of colleges to 33,023, thus registering an increase of 44% in the number of Universities and 56% in the case of colleges in comparison to the figures at the end of Xth Plan.

Washington Post stands its ground, says no apology for PM article

T

he Washington Post said that no apology has been offered for an article written by the India bureau chief which called Manmohan Singh a ‘silent’ Prime Minister who has become ‘a tragic figure’. TV channels claimed that the Prime Minister’s Office has

sought an apology from the paper and said that its demand was accepted but the Washington Post vehemently denied it. Simon Denyer, the bureau chief, in a tweet from his personal account responded to a reader saying: “@KabirTaneja Its not true. No threats were issued from their side, no apology

was offered from mine”. After the Time magazine dubbed Manmohan Singh an “underachiever”, the Washington Post article criticised him as a ‘silent’ Prime Minister who has become ‘a tragic figure’. “... the image of the scrupulously honorable, humble and intellectual technocrat has slow-

ly given way to a completely different one: a dithering, ineffectual bureaucrat presiding over a deeply corrupt government,” the article said. The article said that under Singh, “economic reforms have stalled, growth has slowed sharply and the rupee has collapsed. But just as damaging to his reputation is the accusation that he looked the other way and remained silent as his cabinet colleagues filled their own pockets”. The UPA 2 government has been under tremendous pressure over the controversy surrounding the CAG report over the coal blocks allocation which stated that they caused a loss of Rs. 1.86 lakh crore to the exchequer. A belligerent Opposition has been demanding the resignation of the Prime Minister over coal row and has disrupted Parliament stalling both Houses. The monsoon session which ends on Friday is about to be washed out because of Opposition’s unrelenting stand. The Post article talks about how Singh “introduced a series of policies that freed the Indian economy from suffocating state control and unleashed the dynamism of its private sector” and says that he “is in danger of going down in history as a failure”. The Time magazine too had

criticised Singh, who has been lauded for his pivotal role in liberalising the Indian economy, has been dubbed as an “underachiever” by a top US magazine, which says he appears “unwilling to stick his neck out” on reforms that will put the country back on growth path. Singh, 79, is featured on the cover of Time magazine’s Asia edition, which will be out next week. With his portrait in the background, the title on the cover reads The Underachiever — India needs a reboot. ‘Is Prime Minister Manmohan Singh up to the job?’ Time’s report titled A Man in Shadow asks, adding that apart from facing the challenges of a slowdown in economic growth, huge fiscal deficit and a falling rupee, Congress party-led UPA coalition “has found itself fending off corruption scandals....” “....investors are beginning to get cold feet. Voters too are losing confidence, as rising inflation and a litany of scandals chip away at the government’s credibility,” the magazine said. Pointing towards Singh’s fall “from grace,” the magazine said, “in the past three years, the calm confidence he (Singh) once radiated has been absent. He seems unable to control his ministers and — his new, temporary portfolio at the finance

First Coalgate victim: Maha minister may be told to quit

M

aharashtra education minister Rajendra Darda will be the first casualty of the coal scam, with

the Congress high command signalling him to resign after being named an accused by the CBI. A decision on Darda’s fate

may be taken after Congress chief Sonia Gandhi returns from abroad in two days, but he may resign before that, said party

officials, representatives from ministries such as power and steel, central officials and those from Coal India Limited and its subsidiaries. “We have to see if there was criminal intent for overlooking the ineligibilities of companies, if money changed hands and whether the committee had enough resources in the first place to check the firms’ eligibilities,” said an investigator. Sources said investigators have found that coal block applications were often okayed by consensus — when there would be no opposition from a state or any screening committee member.

sources. Darda is accused of criminal conspiracy and violation of the Prevention of Corruption Act in one of the five CBI FIRs. But no immediate action is planned against the minister’s brother and Congress Rajya Sabha MP Vijay Darda — another accused — as he does not hold a party position. After registering FIRs against five companies for allegedly distorting facts to get coal blocks, the CBI is probing if the screening committee deliberately overlooked ineligibilities of firms that had applied for the blocks. The panel was usually presided over by the union coal secretary and included chief secretary-level state

Modi pokes fun at Aakash, Cong’s laptop promises

The latest Congress promise of education infrastructure overhaul and free Aakash tablets to students has drawn derision from chief minister Narendra Modi. Discomfited earlier by the overwhelming response to Congress housing scheme promise, the chief minister this time responded with sarcasm. Addressing students on Teachers’ Day from Gandhinagar, Modi — punning on the word “aakash” — said, “The Aakash tablet promised by union minister Kapil Sibal is yet to arrive on earth.” “He (Sibal) had stated that the world’s cheapest low-cost PC would be made available to students at Rs. 3,000. Mind you, it was not for free, you had to pay for it, but even after paying, no tablet PC has been delivered since its launch.”

September 2012 Edition

The aggressive poll campaign of the Congress had been making the state government increasingly uncomfortable. After the overwhelming success of its scheme promising affordable houses to economically weaker sections of women in urban areas, the party had promised free plots of land to women in rural Gujarat. The Gujarat Congress had pledged to make education “affordable and accessible to the poor, marginalised and rural communities” and blamed the Modi government for ruining the education system. Party president Arjun Modhvadia promised a free laptop to every student after Class 12 if the party came to power in the coming assembly elections. He also promised hostels in cities, sports complexes in every block and universities in tribal areas.

CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF FUN!

O

n December 13 2012, Melbourne’s giant face of fun, Luna Park, celebrates 100 years! This is an extraordinary milestone which the entire city is invited to celebrate. An exciting Centenary program including free community activities, music concerts and a heritage

weekend will run throughout the summer months. Luna Park will also play host to a series of special ticketed events appealing to all ages. The Centenary festival will kick off in November with the launch of a Centenary book, detailing Luna Park’s rich and sometimes

controversial history. December will feature a series of special events both at the Park itself and spread throughout the city of Melbourne. A number of largescale, free community events are planned as well as parties for Melbourne’s VIP’s and the Park’s staff and their families. Luna Park’s CEO, Mary Stuart, is keen to spread the excitement of this great occasion as far as possible. “Luna Park is Australia’s oldest ‘pleasure park’ and is a treasure that has survived against the odds. It has a charm and a character that cannot be invented or replicated. Luna Park holds a special place in the hearts of people who come here with such goodwill and excitement. Melbourne is rightly proud of this special place and what it stands for.” Luna Park is the iconic face of Melbourne and a vital part of the city’s heart and soul. The Park has put a smile on the faces of generations of families and is as much loved now as it was when it first opened its gates. When Luna Park first opened on Friday 13th December in 1912, an excited 22,319 people flocked through the now famous Face and Towers and the huge Mr Moon mouth. The owners of the Park, the JD Williams Amusement Company, had set out to create a world-leading amusement park, scouring the globe for the best rides and side-show amusements, drawing on their own experience

as well as employing experts to create an attraction that would stand the test of time. Over 80,000 lights were turned on that first night, adding an atmosphere of fairy-tale amazement to the scene. Key attractions during the early years of Luna Park included the Great Scenic Railway, the Palace of Illusions (which later became the Giggle Palace), the River Caves and the Ferris Wheel. Live entertainment was also very popular at the time, including global high-wire stars Granada and Fedora, who would traverse high above Luna Park on a length of wire, dressed up as an elephant! Today Luna Park remains a favourite destination for all ages and features 18 rides and attractions, including the world famous Great Scenic Railway, the beautiful Carousel, the spooky Ghost Train, the Dodgem Cars and heart-stopping contemporary rides including the Spider, Enterprise and Pharaoh’s Curse. Luna Park was registered with Heritage Victoria in 1987 and today continues to delight and entertain young and old as it has done for 100 years. The iconic Mr Moon face continues to welcome hundreds of thousands of people each year. Two of the most popular attractions at Luna Park today have a long history. The world famous Great Scenic Railway circled the Park from its opening, offering thrills, laughs and unique views

across the Bay. The Great Scenic Railway is the oldest continually operating wooden roller coaster in the world still operating under its original design with a ride-on brake operator. The beautiful heritage listed Carousel is a year younger than the Park and is a very proud 99 years young. Located at Luna Park since 1923, it is more than just a ride - it is a work of art. Each and every one of the sixty-eight horses has been painstakingly restored to its original beauty making it a formidable favourite for visiting families. Of the upcoming Luna Park Centenary celebrations, Lindsay Fox, one of the owners of Luna Park and Director of LinFox International says, “You take the stages of life for granted when you live them, but then certain milestones come along and shake you up a bit. Luna Park’s centenary is an example of that. I have rich memories of growing up in this place. I took my six kids there and they take their kids there now. My experiences and stories get passed on to add to the ones they are enjoying now and that’s the value in sharing heritage. That’s why Luna Park’s centenary is worth celebrating.”

Indian-American NASA astronaut Sunita Williams and her Japanese counterpart Akihiko Hoshide have successfully restored power to the International Space Station on their second attempt. With this Spacewalk, Williams surpassed Peggy Whitson’s record during yesterday’s excursion for total cumulative spacewalk time by a female astronaut. Whitson worked outside for 39 hours and 46 minutes over the course of six spacewalks.

Williams has conducted six spacewalks for a total of 44 hours and 2 minutes. Peggy Whitson, sent up congratulations: “You go, girl!” Williams replied: “Anybody could be in these boots.” The astronauts had to go into space for the second time in less than a week. The spacewalk lasted 6 hours 28 minutes. Williams and Hoshide have finally completed repairs on the main power unit switching mechanism, the repairing of

which ran into problems earlier this week. As a result of the faults in the system, the astronauts had to save energy by turning off part of the solar cells and de-energised some compartments of the station. This was the second attempt to correct the problem. Earlier, last Thursday, Williams and Hoside were in space for more than eight hours, but failed to fix the unit and attach it correctly to the ISS.

India ‘gutka’ chewing tobacco habit a tough nut to crack

T

en Indian states have banned a popular form of chewing tobacco in a major policy shift that may save millions of lives and strike a blow at the global tobacco industry, already reeling from new anti-smoking laws around the world. But an estimated 65 million Indians use “gutka” - a heady form of chewing tobacco made of crushed betel nut, nicotine and laced with thousands of chemicals - and furious manufacturers are fighting to have the bans overturned. Companies such as Delhibased DS Group are dragging states to courts, complaining that the billion-dollar industry should be regulated as tobacco and not as food and that the bans threaten the livelihoods of millions of farmers and street vendors scattered from Bangalore to New Delhi. “Nobody understands the bigger picture. What will happen to those poor farmers? No one thinks of them,” said a company official on condition of anonymity. No company Reuters consulted would speak on record.

Last week, Punjab became the tenth of 28 states to ban the sale of gutka after the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India reclassified

it as a foodstuff, prohibiting the use of tobacco and nicotine as “ingredients in any food product”. Gutka making is controlled

by family-run Indian firms, with no international tobacco companies in the business. Several other forms of chewing tobacco considered

less harmful have not been reclassified as foodstuffs and are not banned. Some 482 million people live in the 10 states which have enforced the bans. Delhi, Gujarat and Chandigarh, with a combined population of 77 million, are due to follow suit - Delhi this week. More Indians, including children, chew gutka than smoke, making the trend of outlawing the cheap, colorful packets a more effective health policy in the world’s second most populous nation than antismoking laws like Australia’s ban on cigarette pack logos. “We’re using all kinds of means to persuade the rest (of the states) to enforce the ban. It’s a central legislation. States have no option but to abide now,” said Amal Pushp, director of the health ministry’s National Tobacco Control Programme. Gutka is popular with the young and old alike, many of whom are blase about the nation’s leading cause of oral cancer. Some of the chemicals in some brands of gutka are also used in tile cleaners and battery acids.

Railway cop and friend rape 20 year old in New Delhi station room

A

railway special force constable, along with an accomplice, allegedly gang-raped a

20-year-old woman passenger on 4th September near the VIP waiting room of the New Delhi Railway Station, which is

in line to be declared a ‘worldclass’ station. The constable, Pintu Singh, 24, and his friend

Hawan Pratap Singh, 21, have been arrested and an FIR registered. According to the police, the victim had arrived at the station with her younger sister late on Tuesday night. Since it was very late, the two decided to wait for the morning before heading to their home in Vishnu Garden. “After the younger sister had volunteered to look around for a locker room, the two accused convinced the victim to come with them to a second-floor waiting room in the VIP arena of the station, near the international tourist information office. They took her to room 201 and raped her there,’’ said a GRP official. Cops are checking claims that the woman was known to Hawan, a resident of Tilak Nagar. Pintu Singh, posted with the 8th Railway Protection Special Force battalion in Delhi, has been suspended. “We arrested the RPSF constable on Wednesday

morning after the medical test of the victim confirmed rape. Investigations are on,” said DCP (crime and railways) Sanjay Jain. Sources said there was some delay in the arrests because the victim’s statement initially appeared a bit contradictory. Railway officials said that they have decided to take prompt action to send a stern message to the forces. “We have come to know that there was also a financial dispute between the woman and the two men over a sum of Rs 7 lakh. However, until proven guilty, we have suspended the constable. We are in talks with RPF, RPSF and GRP on how to make the station complex safer,’’ said a Northern Railway spokesperson. Cops said they would examine CCTV footage in the railway station to gather information on the sequence of events.

McDonald’s Vegetarian Restaurants: Latest in Long, Tough Battle to Woo India

T

he announcement by McDonald’s on Tuesday that it would open a few vegetarian-only restaurants in India next year marks the fast-food chain’s latest attempt to appeal to consumers in an

unlikely market. The fast-food chain has been on a nearly twodecade slog in India, one marked by both controversy and success. On Tuesday, the company said it planned to open vegetarian outlets near the Golden Temple

in Amritsar and a Hindu shrine in Jammu and Kashmir. McDonald’s now has 270 outlets in India, less than 1 percent of the company’s more than 33,000 stores worldwide, but a much larger presence than Western

food chains like KFC, which has 160 restaurants in India. Much of the controversy has revolved around the product on which the McDonald’s brand is based: beef hamburgers. The company does not sell any beef products in India, where about 80 percent of the population is Hindu.McDonald’s accounts for 3 percent of all beef consumption in the United States, or some 800 million pounds a year, according to Meat Trade News Daily. (Based on average beef production per cow of 585 pounds, that’s 1.37 million cows per year killed in the name of the fast-food chain, in the United States alone.) Just over a decade ago, McDonald’s was nearly forced to leave the country after it was reported that beef flavoring was in the fat it used to make French fries around the world. Shiv Sena and other Hindu activists protested McDonald’s outlets, in some cases ransacking them. In a letter to then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, activists demanded the chain be banned from India, saying “in a country where 80 per cent of the population worships the cow, one cannot go on with

this kind of a controversy,” The Hindu newspaper reported in May of 2001. “McDonald’s has made itself extra-sensitive in the Indian market since then, and the results are beginning to show,” The New York Times reported in 2003. “Its mayonnaise is made without eggs. All stores maintain two separate burger-cooking lines, one vegetarian and one not. Workers in the vegetarian section wear green aprons, and workers from the non-vegetarian section are forbidden to cross over without showering first.” The announcement inspired navel-gazing among avowed foreign vegetarians and enthusiasm from the Indian news media. But some Hindu groups took it as a call to arms. McDonald’s, an “organization associated with cow slaughter,” is attempting to humiliate Hindus by opening the outlets in religious spots, an official from the Swadeshi Jagran Manch, a branch of the Hindu nationalist group Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, told The Daily Telegraph of Britain. “We are definitely going to fight it.”

India and China Agree to Resume Joint Military Exercises T

he two ministers, Liang Guanglie of China and A. K. Antony of India, announced the agreement after talks in New Delhi. The two countries also decided to hold high-level official exchanges, conduct joint maritime search-and-rescue exercises and strengthen antipiracy operations off the coast of Somalia, where pirate attacks pose a threat to shipping. No dates were set for the exercises. The ministers said in a statement that closer military ties would help deepen trust and friendship between the two countries. The exercises were frozen after Beijing denied a visa to an Indian general who worked in Indian-controlled Kashmir, the Himalayan region also claimed by Pakistan. India and China’s tangled relationship dates to a 1962 border war. They also have unresolved territorial disputes, are competing for leadership across the continent and are vying for energy sources to supply their growing economies and huge populations. Analysts said that Beijing was likely to have used the brief talks to ask India to stay out of a dispute in the South China Sea. Beijing is coming under increasing American pressure to agree to a regional code of conduct to reduce the risks of a conflict there. China’s claims in the area have created tensions with Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei. China has also cautioned India

September 2012 Edition

to stop what it says is an illegal joint project between Vietnam and India’s state-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation that is searching for hydrocarbons in the disputed waters. Vietnam says the exploration is within its territorial waters. India could play a role in persuading Beijing to ease its aggressive posture in the territorial disputes, said Sujit Dutta, an international affairs professor at Jamia Millia University.“At a time when Beijing is in a confrontationist mode with several countries over

territorial disputes, China must be persuaded that its unilateralism in the South China Sea is affecting security in the region,” he said. Mr. Liang and Mr. Antony also reviewed progress in talks to resolve a long-running border dispute in the Himalayas that led to the brief war in 1962. Fifteen rounds of talks on the dispute have made little headway. “The Chinese side is willing to work together with the Indian side to jointly maintain peace and tranquillity in the China-India border areas,” Mr. Liang said in an inter-

view with The Hindu newspaper. The defense ministers also discussed security in Afghanistan after the drawdown of Americanled NATO troops in 2014, a government official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media. India and China — a strong ally of India’s main rival, Pakistan — share concerns about Pakistan’s role in arming and supporting the Taliban forces that are threatening to make a comeback in Afghanistan once NATO leaves.

Mr. Liang was also expected to reassure India over China’s rapid military buildup and its growing investment in Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and the Maldives. China’s deepening involvement in the four countries has fanned concerns that China is encircling India. Despite tensions, trade between India and China has soared from $5 billion in 2002 to nearly $75 billion last year. However, the trade remains heavily skewed in favor of China, which is now India’s biggest trading partner.

Over 50 die in Sivakasi firecracker unit blaze

I

n one of Sivakasi’s worst accidents ever, over 50 workers were reported

N

to have died in a major fire that broke out on Wednesday afternoon in a factory at the

firecracker manufacturing hub. However, police put the death toll at 36.

Senior officials said the deputy chief controller of explosives, Sivakasi, had

cancelled the licence of the unit, Om Sakthi Fireworks at Mudhalipatti, on Tuesday due to violation of norms. However, work was still on at the unit. The cause of the fire that started from a godown of the factory is not yet known. The Om Sakthi factory is among the bigger ones in the town. Police said there were nearly 300 workers at the factory when the fire began — a larger than usual number because of the coming Diwali season. The fire and smoke suffocated the workers, making it difficult for them to escape. The fire also led to explosions that brought down the shed of the factory and trapped workers. Many among the local public who rushed in to help were also injured. With no good facilities to treat burn victims in Sivakasi or its neighbourhood, the injured had to be taken to Madurai. While the factory owner is reported to be absconding, PTI quoted police as saying that the foreman of the firecracker unit has been arrested. Both the Centre and the state government announced ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each for the families of the victims.

Nigerian army retakes hijacked oil tanker, frees Indian sailors

igeria’s navy has retaken an oil tanker hijacked off the country’s largest city, freeing 23 Indian sailors held hostage by pirates who fled as the navy arrived, a spokesman said. None of the sailors was hurt in the hijacking of the MT Abu Dhabi Star, which happened off the coast of Lagos, said Pat Adamson, a spokesman for Dubai-based Pioneer Ship Management Services LLC. The Nigerian navy was providing an escort for the vessel on Wednesday afternoon to make sure it arrived safely at Lagos’ busy port, Commodore Kabir Aliyu said. The pirates who took over the vessel fled when they saw the Nigerian naval ship on the horizon, Adamson said. It was unclear whether they stole any of the ship’s cargo, though the crew had begun an inspection of the ship, the spokesman said. The pirates targeted the ship as it was anchored off the coast Tuesday night, Aliyu said. The sailors onboard sent distress signals as the pirates boarded the Singapore-flagged ship, with their last message

September 2012 Edition

indicating they had locked themselves inside a panic room on the vessel, Aliyu said. During the short hijacking, the ship’s management received no ransom demands for the crew, Pioneer Ship Management Services said. That is not unusual, as pirates

in the region increasingly target oil tankers for their cargos, holding control of the vessels only long enough to offload the fuel before escaping. That is in contrast to pirates off the Somali coast, who typically hold sailors for months for ransom.

Pirate attacks are on the rise in West Africa’s Gulf of Guinea, which follows the continent’s southward curve from Liberia to Gabon. Over the last year and a half, piracy there has escalated from low-level armed robberies to hijackings and cargo thefts.

Last year, London-based Lloyd’s Market Association, an umbrella group of insurers, listed Nigeria, neighbouring Benin and nearby waters in the same risk category as Somalia, where two decades of war and anarchy have allowed piracy to flourish.

Ganesh Chaturthi Festival in India

T

his spectacular festival honors the birth of the beloved Hindu elephantheaded god, Lord Ganesha, popularly worshiped for his ability to remove obstacles and bring good fortune. epending on the cycle of the moon. It falls on the fourth day after new

moon in the Hindu month of Bhadrapada. In 2012, Ganesh Chaturthi is on September 19. It is celebrated for 11 days (ending on September 29), with the biggest spectacle taking place on the last day called Ananta Chaturdasi day. Mostly in the states of

Maharashtra, Goa, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. One of the best places to experience the festival is in the city of Mumbai. Celebrations take place in a special way at the towering Siddhivinayak temple, located in the central suburb of Prabhadevi, which

is dedicated to Lord Ganesha. An incalculable number of devotees visit the temple to join in prayers and pay their respects to the God during the festival. In addition, around 10,000 statues of Lord Ganesh are displayed at various locations in the city. The festival begins with the installation of huge elaborately crafted statutes of Ganesha in homes and podiums, which have been especially constructed and beautifully decorated. Artisans put months of effort into making the statues. It’s forbidden to look at the moon on this first night as legend had it the moon laughed at Lord Ganesha when he fell from his vehicle, the rat. On Ananta Chaturdasi (the last day), the statues are paraded through the streets, accompanied by much singing and dancing, and then immersed in the ocean or other bodies of water. In Mumbai alone, more than 150,000 statues are immersed each year! Once a statue of Lord Ganesh is installed, a ceremony is undertaken to invoke his holy presence into the statue. This ritual is called the Pranapratishhtha Puja, during which a number of mantras are

recited. Following this a special worship is performed. Offerings of sweets, flowers, rice, coconut, jaggery and coins are made to the God. The statue is also anointed with red chandan powder. Prayers are offered to Lord Ganesha every day during the festival. Temples devoted to Lord Ganesha also organize special events and prayers. Those who have a Ganesha statue in their house treat and care for him as a much loved guest. Hindus worship idols, or statues, of their gods because it gives them a visible form to pray to. They also recognize that the universe is in a constant state of change. Form eventually gives away to formlessness. However, the energy still remains. The immersion of the statues in the ocean, or other bodies of water, and subsequent destruction of them serves as a reminder of this belief. The festival is celebrated in a very public manner. Local communities compete with each other to put up the biggest and best Ganesha statue and display. Expect very crowded streets, filled with boisterous devotees, and lots of music.

hina’s military has suspended an officer, after he and his wife were accused of scuffling with a flight attendant in a midair argument over stowing their luggage. The altercation which occurred on a China Southern flight on the 29th of August, has sparked outrage, and the announcement of the decision has brought about widespread anger over haughty and sometimes violent behavior by officials as well as the power of Chinese websites to stir public

interest and opinion. The flight attendant posted photos on her Weibo microblog showing scratches and a tear in her clothing she says were inflicted during the scuffle. Media accounts say the officer and his wife smelled heavily of alcohol but other details are unclear. Official media say Fang Daguo was suspended as a district military political commissar in the southern city of Guangzhou pending an investigation.

Indians’ Australian Dream M

Many Indians come to Australia, attracted by its great lifestyle

India has surged ahead of China and Britain as the largest source of settlers to Australia, but can skilled migrants from the subcontinent forever resist the magnetic appeal of their homeland?

September 2012 Edition

any are students who are seduced by one of the world’s great “lifestyle powers” and go on to thrive under the cobalt skies of their adopted homeland. The latest figures show that 29,000 Indians, most of them qualified professionals, including software engineers and cooks, became permanent residents in Australia, which is more than 15% of the total intake according to the 2011-12 Migration Programme report. But homesickness and a hankering for familiar haunts and faces can be unsettling for both new and old arrivals. There is so much to learn, experience and do in India that no other country has to offer” “There is something unique about India and even though it is a difficult country and you want to probably work elsewhere, there is something about the richness of Indian culture and the affection of the people around you which keeps pulling you back,” said Professor Amitabh Mattoo, the Kashmiri-born director of the Australia-India Institute at the University of Melbourne. “Of course, then there is also nostalgia, which can often make you dream about things that probably didn’t exist,” he added.

NEXI - the robot with facial expressions NEXI has many features besides the facial expressions. Self-balancing wheels, hands, eyes (cameras) and 3D infrared camera with laser rangefinder

A

latest invention by MIT Media Lab is a new robot that is able to show various facial expressions such as ‘slanting its eyebrows in anger’, or ‘raise them in surprise’, and show a wide assortment of facial expressions while communicating with people. This latest achievement in the field of Robotics is named NEXI as it is framed as the next generation robots which is aimed for a range of applications for personal robots and human-robot teamwork. DESIGNING The head and face of NEXI were designed by Xitome Design which is a innovative designing and development company that specializes in robotic design and development. The expressive robotics started with a neck mechanism sporting 4 degrees of freedom (DoF) at the base, plus pan-tilt-yaw of the head itself. The mechanism has been constructed to time the movements so they mimic human speed. The face of NEXI has been specially designed to use gaze, eyebrows, eyelids and an articulate mandible which helps in expressing a wide range of different emotions. The chassis of NEXI is also advanced. It has been developed by the Laboratory for Perceptual Robotics UMASS (University of

Massachusetts), Amherst. This chassis is based on the uBot5 mobile manipulator. The mobile base can balance dynamically on two wheels. The arms of NEXI can pick up a weight of up to 10 pounds and the plastic covering of the chassis can detect any kind of human touch. CYNTHIA BREAZEAL: HEAD OF THE PROJECT This project was headed by Media Lab’s Cynthia Breazeal, a well known robotics expert famous for earlier expressive robots such as Kismet. She is an Associate Professor of Media Arts and Sciences at the MIT. She named her new product as an MDS (mobile, dextrous, social) robot. FEATURES OF NEXI Besides a wide range of facial expressions, Nexi has many other features. It has self-balancing wheels like the Segway transporter, to ultimately ride on. Currently it uses an additional set of supportive wheels to operate as a statically stable platform in its early stage of development. It has hands which can be used to manipulate objects, eyes (video cameras), ears (an array of microphones), and a 3-D infrared camera and laser rangefinder which support real-time tracking of objects, people and voices as well as indoor navigation.

Forget Windows, Midori is coming

W

INDOWS is a name that has ruled the whole computer world since its first launch in November 1985. Since then it is like a trademark of Microsoft Corporation. With many advanced versions of Windows available today such as Windows XP, Windows Vista, it is the most used operating system in the world. In 2010, Microsoft is going to launch WINDOWS 2007, but now here is time to experience a yet another technology of operating systems. Yes, MICROSOFT is working on a new generation of operating systems called Cloud-Based Operating System and rumors are there that MIDORI will be their first such operating system, which will replace Windows fully from computer map. WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE MIDORI is an offshoot of Microsoft Research’s Singularity operating system. In this the tools and libraries are completely managed code. MIDORI is designed to run directly on native hardware (x86, x64 and ARM),

September 2012 Edition

will be hosted on the Windows Hyper-V hypervisor, or even be hosted by a Windows process. MIDORI can be also seen as MICROSOFT’S answer those competitors who are applying “Virtualization” as a mean to solving issues within contemporary computing. The main idea behind MIDORI is to develop a lightweight portable OS which can be mated easily to lots of various applications. IMPORTANCE OF MIDORI For knowing the importance of MIDORI you have to think about, how an operating system is loaded on a computer. Actually operating system is loaded onto a hard disk physically located on that machine. In this way, the operating system is tied very tightly to that hardware. As Windows is dependent on hardware, it might face opposition from contemporary ways of working because people are extremely mobile in using different devices in order get diverse information. Due to this trend installing different applications on a single

computer may led to different compatibility issues whenever the machine require updating. The new operating system will solve these problems by the concept of Virtualizing. This will solve problems such as widespread security vulnerabilities, unexpected interactions among different applications, failures caused by errant extensions, plug-ins, and drivers and many more. ERIC RUDDER, Senior Vice President, Technical Strategy The importance of this project for MICROSOFT can be understood by the fact that company choose Eric Rudder , former head of Microsoft’s server and tools business and a key member of Chairman Bill Gates’ faction of the company, to handle it. WHEN WILL IT BE LAUNCHED Just Wait and See. Microsoft has not declared any such date about launching of MIDORI, but there are rumors that this project is in incubation phase.

Apple seeks to ban Samsung Galaxy S3

S

amsung has accused Apple of resorting to litigation in an effort to limit consumer choice after the iPhone maker said it was seeking to stop the sale of Galaxy S III smartphones in the United States. Fresh from its $US1 billion court victory over Samsung, Apple, in a separate case, asked a federal district court in San Jose, California, on Friday to add four more products to a list of Samsung goods that Apple says infringe its patents. The new list of 21 products includes Samsung’s flagship smartphone Galaxy S III as well as the Galaxy Note, another popular Android phone. If the court finds those devices are infringing Apple’s patents and irreparably harming the US company, it could temporarily halt sales in the US market even before the trial begins. The latest accusation is part of a larger, epic struggle over patents and innovation in one of the most lucrative consumer electronics sectors that is unfolding in 10 countries. The biggest stakes are in the US, the world’s largest smartphone market in 2011. Last month, a jury in the San Jose court found that Samsung had copied Apple’s design innovations and Samsung was ordered to pay Apple $US1.05 billion. Samsung

has vowed to appeal the verdict, all the way to the US Supreme Court if necessary. On Saturday, Samsung denounced Apple’s attempt to halt sales of the S III, which hit the 10 million global sales mark in July, less than three months after its release. “Apple continues to resort to litigation over market competition in an effort to limit consumer choice,” Samsung said in a statement. “We will continue to take the necessary legal measures to ensure the availability of our innovative products in the United States.” The strong sales of the S III were crucial in driving Samsung’s quarterly profit to a record high in the last quarter and helped it stay ahead in the worldwide smartphone market. In documents filed with San Jose federal district court said 21 Samsung smartphones, media players and tablets released after August 2011 were “copycat products”.”Rather than innovate and develop its own technology and a unique Samsung style for its smartphone and tablet computer products, Samsung has chosen to copy Apple’s technology, user interface, and innovative style,” Apple said in one document. The Cupertino, California-based company claimed that Samsung is illegally using its eight patents.

One patent is related to the way the device retrieves information in a computer system and another is about gestures on a touchscreen

display to unlock a device. Apple and Samsung are the world’s two largest smartphone makers and together they control

T

his would sure delight the couch potatoes! Engineers have developed a TV which can monitor your eyes and change the channel if you give it the nod. On one hand, it sounds really, really cool. You can raise and lower the volume, change channels, and turn the TV on and off just by moving your eyes. That means no more getting up to find the remote and one less device viewers have to worry about. But, as with every kind of new technology, there are certainly some drawbacks. One of them is the large, table-sized sensor that needs to be installed in order to track eye movements. The Eye Control Television comes with a bulky device that you place in front of your TV, and with a determined blink of your eyes you can change channels, change the volume, or power your television off, the Daily Mail reported. The eye-sensing technology relies on a Kinect-style sensor sat on your table, and your standard blinks will not interrupt your scheduled viewing, the Chinese manufacturer claimed. The sensor sits in front of you and needs calibration the first time you run it, which involves chasing a circle around the screen with your eyes. After that, long blinks activate the sensor, bringing up an on-screen

over half of the global market. They are embroiled in similar legal tussles in Asia, Europe and the United States. display. Looking downwards brings up the volume controls, which you can then adjust by looking at the plus and minus signs. Meanwhile, other menus allow you to switch channels and glide between still images. The equipment was tested at the IFA technology conference in Berlin this week. While random blinks have not hampered the sensor’s features, no one knows if the technology with break down and have issues over time. And while it is a cool device to show off to your friends, some may actually find it kind of creepy. Not to mention the fact that the price tag will most likely point towards the category of ridiculously expensive, at least for now. One thing is for sure: The TV experience is moving towards more interaction with 3D and Internet connectivity. Do not be surprised if this feature pops up in finished products sooner rather than later.

News India looking at opening two border points with Pakistan

F

resh from the successful opening of the Wagah-Attari border trading post, India said it was keen to throw open the Khokhrapar-Munabao border point as well. Addressing a group of Pakistani parliamentarians, Indian Commerce Minister Anand Sharma said that India was also willing to start talks with Pakistan to open the Husseiniwala-Sialkot border point. The Attari-Wagah border post was recently opened for traffic, though he said, some infrastructures was still needed to be put in place. India and Pakistan have started talks on exporting electricity to Pakistan, the minister said. The first step, Sharma said, would be grid connectivity with Pakistan. This has been done between India and Bangladesh in the past couple of years, and the Indian concept could be replicated on the Indo-Pak border. India, the minister said, was willing to sell 500MW of electricity as the first step. Arvind Mehta, Joint Secretary in the Commerce Ministry, said the two sides in their recent meetings were looking to fast-track the process. Sharma said India was negotiating to sell petroleum products to Pakistan as well. Pakistan buys these products from third countries, and Sharma said it would be cheaper to source them from India. Pakistani MPs asked for greater access to tourists from either side. There was also a demand for In-

dian healthcare facilities to set up institutions in Pakistan. India, for its part, would like Pakistan to allow Indian goods to transit through its territory to Afghanistan. On the Munabao border point, sources said a recent meeting of the experts group in July discussed the possibility of a dedicated rail route on the Rajasthan-Sindh border. Given that Barmer in Rajasthan is now a source of oil, India could even export petrochemical products from there to Pakistan. The Khokhrapar-Munabao route has been a consistent demand from the Indian side, because New Delhi believes it offers huge opportunities for local businessmen in Gujarat and Rajasthan as part of the old Kutch-Sindh trading practices.

Mother Teresa remembered on her 15th death anniversary

S

pecial prayers were held at the Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata today to mark Mother Teresa’s 15th death anniversary. Prayers and floral tributes were offered at the grave of the Mother. The Superior General of Missionaries of Charity, Sister Prema, said we are celebrating the Feast Day and the going home of Mother to Jesus. “Today we keep the Feast Day for Mother Teresa. Since the church declared her blessed, we are celebrating this joy together with all our Missionaries of charity family. It is also the 15th anniversary of the going home of Mother

to Jesus, as she called it, when she spoke about death, said Sister Prema. After the beatification of Mother Teresa, the Roman Catholic Church had declared September 5, the day Mother left her earthly abode, as Feast Day - a day for joy and celebration. Albanian born Mother Teresa made Kolkata her home and dedicated her life to the service of poor and destitute children. The Pope beatified the Nobel laureate in October 2003, paving the way for her canonisation, or being declared a saint. She qualified for beatification after Vatican officials acknowledged that she was responsible

for a miracle in which an Indian woman was cured of stomach cancer through her intervention. She came to India in 1929 at the age of 18 and took up teaching and became an Indian citizen in 1948. sually actors aspire to play romantic or action roles, but Gagan Malik wanted to play the mythological character of Lord Ram -- he got the chance to do it in the latest version of “Ramayan”. He says the character is a huge responsibility and he doesn’t fear comparisons with Arun Govil. “Comparisons are unlikely as I can’t even get any closer to Arun Govilji (who played Lord Rama in the original ‘Ramayan’ televised series in 1987). I have tried to portray the character in my own style and with full conviction. I hope people like it too,” Gagan told. “For a long time, I wanted to

portray a role like this and finally I got the opportunity and I am very excited. It’s a huge responsibility as people connect to it. We have grown up listening to ‘Ramayan’ and now being able to bring it to the younger generations, it feels really good,” he added. The actor, who made his small screen debut with popular TV soap “Kumkum”, had to work a lot on his physique and body language for the role of Lord Ram. “It was very important for me to get the look of Lord Rama right and understand it in a better way. I read a lot about it. I had to shed 7-8 kgs to get the look and I have also worked a lot on

my body language. However, the spoken language is very simple so that was not a problem at all,” he added. The first televised version of “Ramayan” came in 1987, which was produced and directed by Ramanand Sagar. Produced under the Sagar Arts banner, it was a hit, and Arun Govil got his due for playing Lord Rama. Another version, by the same production house, came in 2008 with actor Gurmeet Chowdhary playing the same role. Following his father’s footsteps, Moti Sagar recreates the magic once again with the new and simplified version that comes on Zee TV.

was voted out of the dance reality show “Jhalak Dikhla Jaa 5”. In “Jeannie Aur Juju”, an Indian adaptation of popular American

show “I Dream of Jeannie”, Giaa has shed the traditional look and will be seen in harem pants and shimmering outfits. In the show, Jeannie, who has been caught in a bottle for 2000 years, tries to charm her saviour and the love of her life, Vicky, played by actor Ali Asgar on SAB TV. Anooj Kapoor, Executive Vice President and Business Head, SAB TV, hopes Giaa’s presence attracts viewers. “With Giaa in the show, we’re sure to attract a huge audience to watch the show as she has a big fan following. Giaa’s innocence works for the character and Ali’s experience will enhance the show even further,” Kapoor said in a statement. “The show is unique as it will have special effects and tricks that Jeannie performs. It is an uncommon genre on Indian television and the audience will surely enjoy the novelty we are providing them,” he added. The show will stick mostly to the original content and story of “I Dream...”, originally created and produced by legendary author Sidney Sheldon.

Alcohol MAY INCREASE CANCER RISK IN THE BODY

N

ew research suggests that alcohol consumption could be linked to cancer. European researchers tracked more than 350,000 people in eight countries for 13 years, and found that overall cancer risk increases with every extra daily drink greater than

one a day for women or two a day for men. About 10 percent of cancers in men and 3 percent of cancers in women may be attributable to alcohol, including 5 percent of breast cancer cases, according to findings published last week in the British Medical Journal. Drinking too much

alcohol could also account for nearly 45 percent of cancers of the mouth, larynx, and throat in men, and 25 percent of those cancers among women. And the research suggests alcohol leads to 33 percent of liver cancers among men, and 18 percent among women. Exactly

how alcohol triggers cancer is unclear, but the researchers say that when alcohol is digested in the body, it’s converted into a chemical that damages DNA and prevents cells from repairing themselves, which could play a role. “This is the best data we’ve got and we’re ever likely

to get,” Karol Sokora, medical director of Cancer Partners UK, told the BBC. “The take-home message is that the more alcohol you drink, some of the common cancers do increase, and that’s worrying. So the message has to be ‘look at drinking habits, and reduce.’

In 1901 the population of Mussoorie was 6461 which rose to 15,000 in the summer season when the people from plains visited here in order to escape the hot and sultry conditions. The number of tourists visiting Mussoorie kept on increasing every year and thus Mussoorie became popular day by day. Previously, Mussoorie was approachable by road from Saharanpur (93 km) away. Accessibility became easier in 1900 with the railway coming to Dehradun, thus shortening the road trip to 34 km. In present date Mussoorie is very well connected by all means of transportation. Mussoorie is one of the most frequently visited hill station and holiday spot and has very few competent tourist spots. [Paralympics Exclusive]

Girisha hoSANAGARA NAGA The parents of an Indian athlete who won silver at the Paralympics in London will pay off outstanding loans from the money their son has earned with his effort, reports said on Wednesday. Nagarajegowda Hosanagara Girisha, 24, who was born with a defective left foot, has been promised three million rupees ($53,700) dollars by the federal sports ministry for coming second in the men’s F42 high jump. The Paralympic Committee of India also announced a cash award of one million rupees ($18 000). The athlete’s father Nageraje Gowda, a labourer in the southern state of Karnataka, told local media his son’s achievement meant the 350 000-rupee loan he took for his daughter’s marriage and to build a house would be repaid. “I can now forget the struggles we went through,” Gowda told the Times of India. “When he was a kid, the doctor told me he needed a surgery to correct his disability but I got scared and refused. “It was also because we could not afford the costs of the operation... Look at him, he has made us proud with his achievement. “We struggled to make ends meet because of the bank loan we had to repay. But I can forget all that.” Girisha is the third Indian to win a silver medal at the Paralympics in addition to javelin thrower Bhimrao Kesarkar and shot-putter Joginder Singh Bedi in 1984. The Indian contingent included a total of 21 members including ten athletes, six coaches and five escorts. Athlete Jagbir Singh was the Indian flag-bearer for the

contingent parade at the Paralympics opening ceremony. Athletes and their respective competitive events: Here is a List of Indian contingent athletes: H N Girisha (High Jump (SILVER MEDALIST), Jagseer Singh (Long Jump), Jaideep,Amit Kumar (Discus), Narender (Javelin), Farman Basha, Rajrender Singh Rahelu, Sachin Chowdhry (Power Lifting), Sharath Gayakwad (Swimming), Naresh Kumar Sharma (Shooting). These are the coaches for these athletes: Naval Singh (Discus), K S Nizzamuddin (Long Jump), Satyanarayana (High Jump), Vijay B Munishwar (Power Lifting), Sadanand Malashetti (Power Lifting), John Christopher, Nirmal Kumar (Swimming). Controversy broke out in the Indian Paralympic team in London with an athlete alleging lack of escorts to look after them even as the officials sought to make light of it. Powerlifter Farman Basha said that he was not provided with an escort and that has affected his performance in the games, “I do not have an escort here and even my coach was not allowed to stay with me. I have been in London since August 11 and our federation representatives promised that all arrangements will be made but nothing has been taken care of,” said Basha, who is competing in the men’s 48kg PO classification powerlifting event. “My escort was supposed to take me to the dining area, which is half a kilometer away but he was not available. Only one escort is here for all of us. It is very difficult for us to move around in wheelchairs. I was confident of a medal but now

all my training has gone in vain,” he added. A Paralympic Committee of India official, however, said that there were enough escorts and that the problem arose as there was no provision of one escort per athlete. “We cannot have an escort for every athlete. We have 10 athletes and only six people have been sanctioned to stay inside the Games Village. We are managing things with some people coming early at the Village and leaving late in the evening,” the official said. “The few people available will have to manage and escort the 10 athletes. We are doing that and managing things.” Amit Kumar, who is competing in men’s discus throw F51/52/53 category, said that the officials have been doing their best under the circumstances. “I don’t know about the athletes of other countries if they also face these kind of issues. But our officials are doing their best under the circumstances. Each of us cannot get a coach and an escort,” Kumar told. The London 2012 Paralympics opening ceremony is called Enlightenment and showcased the achievements of British disabled artists and performers, including members of the charity Aerobility. The event also featured a parade of athletes from each of the competing nations, before the cauldron was lit by the Paralympic flame, marking the official start of the 14th Paralympic Games.

ARAJEGOWDA

He is India’s first ever medal winner at the Paralympics. High Jumper Girisha Hosanagara Nagarajegowda’s silver medal feat brings a fresh hope for the ‘neglected’ category of ‘para’ athletes who often beg for recognition. The 24-year-old Girisha’s way to success, like many others, has been full of obstacles - the biggest being his disability. But his undying spirit to achieve always kept him at his confident best.

Indian Athletes at Paralympics: • H N Girisha (High Jump SILVER MEDALIST) • Jagseer Singh (Long Jump) • Jaideep (Discus) • Amit Kumar (Discus) • Narender (Javelin) • Farman Basha (Power Lifting) • Rajrender Singh Rahelu (Power lifting) • Sachin Chowdhry (Power Lifting) • Sharath Gayakwad (Swimming), • Naresh Kumar Sharma (Shooting). These are the coaches for these athletes: • Naval Singh (Discus) • K S Nizzamuddin (Long Jump) • Satyanarayana (High Jump) • Vijay B Munishwar (Power Lifting) • Sadanand Malashetti (Power Lifting) • John Christopher (Swimming) • Nirmal Kumar (Swimming).

A

amir Khan has once again proved that they don’t call him a

Perfectionist for nothing! This time round, Aamir Khan gets featured on the cover of the

prestigious Time magazine, for taking up social issues on his television show ‘Satyamev Jayate’. With this, Aamir became the third Indian actor to be featured on the Time magazine cover, the first two being Parveen Babi (July 1976) and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan (2003). Aptly titled as, ‘Khan’s Quest: “He’s breaking the Bollywood mold by tackling India’s social ills. Can an actor change a nation?”, the magazine tries to decode the phenomenon called ‘Aamir Khan’ who has succeeded immensely in bringing in a revolution of sorts with this show. Thanks to the show, the Rajasthan government promised to set up fast track courts to resolve pending female foeticide cases in the state. Not just that, Aamir was also invited to Parliament to discuss the issue of FDI in pharmaceuticals. If that wasn’t enough, he even met PM Manmohan Singh to emphasize the plight of manual scavengers. Besides Aamir, the other Indians who featured on the Time magazine cover include Sachin Tendulkar, Sania Mirza, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and Narendra Modi.

The Meaning of Karma

E

ach of us creates our own karma. Our past thoughts, speech and behaviour have shaped our present reality, and our actions, thoughts and speech now will in turn affect our future. The influence of karma carries over from one lifetime to the

September 2012 Edition

next, remaining through the latent state between death and rebirth. The law of karma accounts for the circumstances of one’s birth, one’s individual nature and the differences among all living beings and their environments. The idea of karma predates

Buddhism. The pre-Buddhist view of karma, however, contained an element of determinism. Shakyamuni maintained that what makes a person noble or humble is not birth but actions taken. Good karma, then, means actions born from good intentions, kindness

and compassion. Conversely, bad karma refers to actions induced by greed, anger and foolishness (or the holding of mistaken views). Some Buddhist treatises divide the causes of bad karma into ten acts: the three physical acts of killing, stealing and sexual misconduct; the four verbal acts of lying, flattery (or idle and irresponsible speech), defamation and duplicity; and the three mental acts of greed, anger and foolishness. Buddhism teaches that the chain of cause and effect exists eternally; this accounts for the influence of karma amassed in prior lifetimes. The influence of such karma resides within the depths of our lives and, when activated by the moment-to-moment realities of this lifetime, shapes our lives according to its dictates. Some karmic effects may appear in this lifetime while others may remain dormant. “Fixed karma” produces a fixed result at a specific time, whereas the result of “unfixed karma”, of course, is neither fixed nor set to appear at a predetermined time. Some karma is so heavy, so profoundly imprinted in the depths of people’s lives, that it cannot easily be altered. For instance, suppose someone deliberately makes another person extremely unhappy or even causes that person’s death, that person has created heavy negative karma. According to the strict law of causality, this negative karma will surely lead to karmic suffering far beyond one’s ordinary

powers to eradicate it. Such grave karma usually exerts its influence at death, and the most influential karma at the time of death will determine one’s basic life condition in the next lifetime. The influence of particular karma will be extinguished after its energy is unleashed in one’s life. This is similar to a plant seed that sprouts and grows to blossom as a flower or bear fruit. After fulfilling its function, the same seed will never repeat the process. Bad karma can be erased only after it “blossoms” in the form of our suffering. According to pre-Lotus Sutra teachings, the influence of severely bad karma, created through numerous actions, could only be erased through several lifetimes. But the Lotus Sutra teaches that the principal cause for attaining Buddhahood is the Buddha nature inherent in each individual life, and that faith in the Lotus Sutra opens the way to that attainment. It is not required that we undergo lifetime after lifetime of austerities. Through our diligent practice of faith in the Lotus Sutra, we can instantly tap our innate Buddhahood and extricate ourselves from the effects of our bad karma in this lifetime. Moreover, the transformation of an individual’s life condition can evoke a similar transformation in others. As this process ripples outward, similar transformations become possible throughout entire societies, all humankind and even into the natural world.

JOKER Director:

Shirish Kunder

Producers:

Farah Khan, Akshay Kumar

Starring:

Akshay Kumar, Sonakshi Sinha, Minisha Lamba, Shreyas Talpade

September 2012 Edition

We have always been fascinated by the power of the unknown. Movie makers too appear smitten by its influence. Though Hollywood has portrayed [and continues to do so with brilliance] UFOs, aliens and ETs in several path-breaking movies, Rakesh Roshan took the initiative of projecting an alien in a Hindi movie first. And did so very convincingly and triumphantly. Now Shirish Kunder makes an attempt... From the looks of it, JOKER reminds one of SIGNS [the crop circles], seems inspired by KOI MIL GAYA [UFO, alien], also SWADES [a well-settled Indian in the U.S. returns to his roots -his village], LAGAAN [the dhoticlad hero and the villagers strike a pose] and GOLMAAL series [Shreyas Talpade’s incoherent speech, a la Tusshar Kapoor] and of course, the fav of many a film-maker, Spielberg’s ET. Yet, despite everything going in its favor, JOKER falls flat on its face! In 1947, when the maps of India and Pakistan were being drawn, an oversight ensured that the village of Paglapur didn’t find a place in either country. The village had the distinction of housing the largest mental asylum in the region and in the melee that ensued during partition, the asylum inmates broke loose, drove away

the villagers and established their own republic in Paglapur. And that’s how it stayed for the next 60 years! While the world outside changed, Paglapur remained isolated, with no electricity, water, television or sanity!

“Joker runs out of gas... because neither does the comic quotient work, nor do the aliens salvage the show...” Now, decades after the world forgot this village, a NASA scientist of Indian origin, Agastya [Akshay Kumar] and his friend [Sonakshi Sinha], find themselves on the road to Paglapur. Agastya is working on a project for creating a device to communicate with aliens. So why is he in a village whose colorful inhabitants include a man who speaks in gibberish, another who thinks he is a lamp post and everyone else who think that the World War II is still going on? And more importantly, what are they going to do that will soon turn the universe’s spotlight on this forgotten village? Although the title may give an impression that it’s all about a funny guy trying to make people laugh, the fact is that this one’s about guys pretending to be aliens and how, eventually, they face an actual alien in the end. On the brighter side, the setting

7b

and structures look magical and to build an entire story around a desolate village must have been enchanting. But interesting concepts don’t necessarily translate into interesting films. JOKER runs out of gas as soon as director Shirish Kunder establishes the plot, because neither does the comic quotient work, nor do the aliens [fake and actual] salvage the show. In fact, the film makes a mockery of everything you may have seen or heard of UFOs and aliens. While bits and pieces of the first half is tolerable, the film goes completely awry in its post-interval portions. Seriously, what was Kunder thinking while penning and executing this one? Imagine an alien dancing to Indian songs and also doing pelvic thrusts!!! Yes, you read that right! Akshay is monotonous and repetitive. Sonakshi gets no scope at all. Also, the spark is missing. Shreyas Talpade is reduced to being Akshay’s glorified sidekick. Minissha Lamba is hardly there. Arya Babbar, Vindu Dara Singh, Asrani, Sanjay Mishra, Vrajesh Hirjee, Pitobash, Gurpreet Guggi, Darshan Jariwala, Anjan Srivastava, Avtar Gill and Bikramjeet Kanwarpal are gap fillers. Alexx O’Nell is strictly okay. On the whole, JOKER is a joke of a film. Disaster!

Saif & Kareena: The BOLLYW OOD Love Story As the two actors get ready to tie the knot, here’s a recap of Bollywood’s grandest love story...

A

fter 13 years of being married to first love Amrita Singh, and then dating Rosa Catalano for three years after his divorce, Saif and Kareena began seeing each other in October 2007. Before falling for Chhote Nawab, Bebo was in a steady relationship with Shahid Kapoor, from 2004 to 2007. It was during the filming of ‘Jab We Met’ that they parted ways. Ironically, the Imtiaz Ali film had them playing lovers, and went on to become a huge hit. Stories of the Saif-Kareena linkup began while the two were shooting for Yashraj Films’ ‘Tashan’ in Ladakh and Rajasthan. Although Saif has received his share of criticism for leaving his kids and family, he has maintained that he is genuinely in love with Kareena. On the other hand, Kareena, who has been quizzed in the media more than once about her relationship with Saif, has always reiterated that destiny brought them together, and that, for her, Saif is the best. Ever since they began dating, Saif and Kareena have made no pretensions about their relationship. They are happy to be clicked as one in the media, and are very open to PDA. In fact, they very rarely appear without each other in public. Like every couple, Saif-Bebo have also had their ups and downs, at least as per the tabloids. In June 2011, reports of their alleged break up were gaining steam. However, the lovers rubbished the reports

Saif and Kareena have been a common feature of tabloids and media stories. September 2012 Edition

and put all rumours to death. Also, according to some media reports, Kareena was initially uncomfortable having Saif’s kids around, but has been spotted with them a few times recently, forcing the doubters to believe that all was well. Kareena supported Saif wholeheartedly during the controversy at Taj Hotel earlier this year, when a bizman alleged that the ‘Cocktail’ star had punched him. Somehow, their real life love hasn’t translated into on-screen success. The pair has acted in films like ‘Tashan’, ‘Kurbaan’ and ‘Agent Vinod’, all of which tanked at the box office. After innumerable media speculations over the D-day (October is rumoured to be the month of the wedding), Saif-Kareena will put ‘the stamp of validation for the society’ (as Saif said in one of his interviews) before the end of the year. Although the wedding date

is yet to be decided, it has been confirmed that the nuptials will be a two-part affair. The actual ceremony in Delhi will be followed by a lavish celebrity affair in Mumbai.

‘Heroine’ censored: Bebo’s smoking scenes with statutory warning

t’s victory time for the Censor Board Of Film Certification (CBFC). Though the producers UTV of Madhur Bhandarkar’s Heroine have gone to the honourable High Court to protest against the new policy of a statutory-warning ticker whenever a smoking sequence is shown, the CBFC on Friday, passed Heroine with an ‘A’ certificate, and with a statutory warning for every scene showing Kareena Kapoor smoking. And since Kareena is shown smoking for approximately 30 percent of the film it means audiences will get to see the statutory warning for about one-third of the playing-time. Explaining the decision, a source from the CBFC said, “Yes, we’ve instructed the makers of Heroine to put statutory warnings wherever the heroine is shown smoking. We’re following the rule. In Raaz 3 as well, a character who smokes would be seen doing so with a statutory warning .Even in Hollywood films whenever any characters smokes on screen, we ask for the statutory warning to be flashed at the bottom of the screen.”

mainstream format. Remakes for now do not interest me. It is easy for me to do what everyone else is doing or what is working. But I’ll always choose to attempt something new with every film.” Sajid Nadiadwala will be now both producing and directing Kick. The film is a remake of a Telugu film of the same name which released in 2009.

Cigarette smoking is not all that has proven injurious to the health of Madhur Bhandarkar’s much-anticipated film. Even scenes showing a brand of cigarette have been censored. Says the CBFC source, “A box of the same brand of cigarette has been shown in ten different places in Heroine. This amounted to endorsing a cigarette brand. We’ve asked the brand name to be blurred out in all the ten places where it is shown.” Interestingly, the much-talked about love scenes in Heroine have been left intact. The decision to carry a statutory warning with every smoking scene has not gone down too well with the makers of Heroine. Someone from the core team said, “Way back in 1968, Nargis was shown smoking for a majority of the running time in Raat Aur Din. Are we moving forward or backward in time?” As for the film’s core team’s contention that the constant nosmoking warning would distract the audience a source from the CBFC said, “After a while the audience wouldn’t even notice it.”

ost newbie actresses would give a hand as well as a leg to act in a Shah Rukh Khan film. However, Sagarika Ghatge, who had quite a prominent role in SRK’s Chak De! fter a year of dating discreetly, earlier this year, Kangna Ranaut came out in the open about her relationship with UK-based doctor Nicholas Lafferty. In June, Kangna was spotted in his company outside a Bandra cafe during his trip to Mumbai. In fact, during that trip, Nick, her boyfriend of more than a year, was spotted with her at several public places in Mumbai. At that time, friends of the actress had said that the duo are in a “committed space”

and that’s why they’ve become comfortable being spotted in the open together. However, earlier this week, the couple decided to part ways. The reason of conflict — their expectations from the future. Apparently, Nick wanted to take the relationship to the next level and Kangna wasn’t ready, professionally and personally, to take that plunge. Says a source, “Nick wanted to get married and have babies soon. He had that immediate future in mind. However, even though Kangna’s

very attached to him, she is not ready for that commitment.” Apparently, the 25-year-old actress felt that she is now treading a path of steady growth and would like to achieve her goals first. Says our source, “She is very focussed on her career right now, so, she felt it was too soon for marriage. She discussed it with Nick and a few days ago, they amicably parted ways.” Kangna didn’t confirm the news despite being messaged for comment.

“Dabangg 2 is not getting delayed” - Arbaaz Khan

A

rbaaz Khan was in for a rude surprise when he woke up to the ‘news’ making rounds about Dabangg 2 getting pushed to March next year. The delay was attributed to the film’s shooting still being on as 40% of it is still remaining. It was also being stated that after Salman Khan and Aamir Khan deliberated on these changes, it was also decided that Talaash would now push ahead. This means that instead of its originally planned 30th November release, the film was now supposed to occupy Aamir’s favourite

Christmas slot by arriving on 21st December, the slot left vacant now due to (apparent) moving ahead of Dabangg 2. ”This is bizarre”, says Arbaaz in a defiant role, “There is no change in plan and we are arriving as scheduled on 21st December. There is no

“I have no idea who is the gossip monger behind this...We are on target...21st December is final...” delay in the film schedule’s either and we are on track. Yes, 40% of

the film’s shoot is left but we have dates already allocated for that. In fact we resume the film’s shoot in a week from now.” He is particularly surprised that Aaamir’s Talaash came into the picture as well. “I have no idea who is the gossip monger behind this. May be some idle mind is just playing mischief. We are on target and anything and everything else that you hearing are plain rumours. 21st December is final for Dabangg 2”, he states. Guess that should set the record straight.

bollywood music Music Review :

I M 24

I

t is really surprising to see films from the ‘alternate camp’ of Rajat KapoorVinay Pathak-Saurabh ShuklaRanvir Shorey-Neha Dhupia seeing such a sudden release one after another and that too after considerable delay from the time they were completed. Just a few weeks ago one saw the arrival of Fatso and now comes I M 24. Resultantly, even the music is seeing a haphazard release and though Jatin Pandit is the composer here with Saurabh Shukla as the lyricist, one wonders how far it would go considering the fact the film too is now in the cinemas. I M 24 surprises at the very beginning with Anwesha Dutta Gupta coming up with a cover version of ‘Do Lafzon Ki’ [The Great Gambler]. She actually does a good job behind the mic and makes one nostalgic enough to check out the original song as well (along with the video). It is a pity though that the song is abruptly ended in a matter of two minutes. The mood is set though with ‘Do Lafzon Ki’ and in the same setting arrives ‘Tan Mein Jalan’ which is sung by Sunidhi Chauhan. Belonging to the old school and reminding one of ‘Raat Akeli Hai’ [Jewel Thief], the song has a jazz setting to it and is a decent hear as long as it plays. A situational track that should do well with the film’s narrative, it makes one look forward to what the rest of the album has to offer. Sonu Nighm

The song that does catch your attention is ‘Abhi Abhi Mere Dil Mein’, a love song which could well have been a ‘ghazal’ in the way it has been structured and composed. With slightly different arrangements, this Jaspreet Singh Kohli sung number could have indeed fitted into the ‘ghazal’ mode. Moreover, the serene atmosphere it manages to create is the kind that makes it just the right song to be played on a romantic evening. The best of the lot so far. One thing that stays consistent in the album is its sound that never strays from the mood of the film. ‘Yeh Kaya Hua’ maintains that and Shaan’s vocals only accentuate the impact further. In fact by the time one listens to this song (followed by the ‘remix version’), it is time to ask the makers a question around what stopped them promoting the album. Jatin Pandit has indeed done well with his compositions here and it is a pity that ‘Yeh Kaya Hua’ may go totally unnoticed as well. Just when one was so convinced about the overall sound arrives ‘Dil Yeh Pagal Maane’. Getting into a dance mode, this Sukhwinder Singh number seems like a clear distraction from the overall scheme of things. Moreover with lyrics like Dan Dana Dan, one really hopes that this is placed as a spoof in the film. Shreya Ghoshal brings the album back to its original setting with ‘Chota Sa Sapna Hai

Yeh’. A song about dreaming and hoping for some great days and nights ahead, this one is a situational track that does have melody at the core of it though staying close to the average mark. Guest composer Jaspal Moni is the chosen one for ‘Sab Chalta Hai’, a song which is designed as a title song. Frankly, this one

is a total aberration when compared to what one has heard in the album. Sung by Gaurav Bangia and written by Rani Malik, one can sense that this is a last minute inclusion by the music company. Though audio wise it is quite ordinary, one can only hope that it’s picturisation in the film (most likely as an end credit title roll or as a part of the

background score) elevates it some extent. I M 24 has a decent score with ‘Abhi Abhi Mere Dil Mein’ and ‘Yeh Kaya Hua’ deserving some listening at the least. However, the very fact that the album has seen a sparse release and that too without any publicity whatsoever, this has all the chances of going completely unnoticed.

Dreamliners new destinations, direct India to Australia

A

ir India plans to place three new Boeing Dreamliners on a direct service between India and Australia this year. Although the aircraft have been covered in Air India’s livery and are ready to fly, Boeing and the Indian government are still in the process of finalising a compensation package agreement. The Dreamliners were expected to be delivered in June of this year but considerable delays involving production strikes and the sourcing of parts has continually postponed the aircraft being dispatched. India ordered 27 Dreamliners from Boeing in 2005, according to SMH. Air India said operating a direct Australian service would enhance profitability and help to elevate the carrier’s performance.

September 2012 Edition

“The Australia operation will commence in August-September,” Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh said. There is equal interest from both the Australian and Indian government to establish these services. Direct flights from India would boost trade, tourist and student links and are a priority for the Australian government, according to the Australian High Commissioner to India Peter Varghese. The NSW and Victorian governments have provided allowances for Air India to fly to Australia. Tourism Australia revealed research indicating up to 300,000 Indians could visit Australian shores annually by 2020 if growth in tourist numbers continues to advance.

three counts of manslaughter and one count of unlawful grievous bodily harm, by ruling his trial a mistrial. In a TV interview aired on Tuesday, Patel who was dubbed as ‘Dr Death’ by Australian media, expressed his sympathy to the families of his patients while declaring he would remain in Australia “as long as it takes” to clear his name. “I want to offer my sincere condolences and sympathy to my former patients and their families affected by these events,” Patel said after his release from the jail. “It has always been my belief and continues to be my belief that I am innocent of the charges against me. But that does not mean that I don’t understand the pain and suffering of others,” “I believe that I have always done my best for my patients and their family, despite the attack on my character at the trial and much adverse publicity about me,” he said. He mentioned that the last four years of which two years he spent in prison had been “traumatic”. “In that trial, allegations were

made not only about my competence as a doctor but also going to the root of my character and my decency as a human being,” he said. “The trauma was not mine alone. I’m acutely aware that the trial and the events surrounding it and the appeals are also very painful for those involved in the events concerned.” Patel was found guilty by a Supreme Court jury in Brisbane on June 29, 2010, of the manslaughter involving Gerry Kemps, 77, James Phillips, 46, and Mervyn Morris, 75, as well as causing grievous bodily harm to Ian Rodney Vowles, now 65. Meanwhile, his former patients and their supporters have strongly reacted with anger on his TV appearance. The 65-year old Ian Vowles who had a section of his bowel removed by Patel said he was not convinced by Patel’s offer of condolences. “He went on a real lot about nothing. He absolutely said virtually nothing at all,” he said. The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) is considering whether to hold another trial. Patel is due to appear in the Supreme Court on Friday.

Why are men thronging lingerie shops suddenly...

Men are trying to emulate the erotic novel Fifty Shades of Grey character Christian Grey in order to take control of their partner’s underwear purchases, a lingerie shop has revealed. However, they are not quite as smooth as the racy book’s hero, with lingerie stores reporting that men are turning red when browsing the latest laces. Unlike the male protagonist in the hit novel, few men have an assistant they can send out to buy saucy smalls for their partners. Real life romeos are hitting high street department stores themselves and buying underwear for their partners. Men are investing in items traditionally reserved for Christmas gifts such as lacy bra and knicker sets in red, black and purple, which Debenhams have noted are up 63 percent.

Babydoll nighties have seen a 105 percent increase in sales over the last month. “We’ve seen a huge increase in male customers visiting our lingerie departments, over the last fortnight,” Debenhams Head of Lingerie, Sharon Webb said. “Usually we never see so many men until the week before Christmas when there is a mad rush.” Although these embarrassed husbands and boyfriends who have taken the first steps into the underwear section, end up baffled and confused when confronted with the vast array of styles and sizes on offer. “Since the 50 shades phenomenon men are purchasing more daring pieces. Traditional knicker sales have been surprisingly low, but we have seen a big increase in sales of babydoll negligees, silky underwear sets, thongs, stockings and suspenders.”

SRK all set for Chennai Express and Happy New Year

hah Rukh Khan’s Chennai Express and Happy New Year are pretty much on track. Of late there were some speculations around possibility of change in plans, considering the choc-o-block schedule of the superstar. However, those associated with his films confirm that everything is as per plans and there are no delays whatsoever. “Shah Rukh has been constantly shooting for Yashji’s film. He has been travelling from Ladakh to Kashmir. However, that was always on the cards and there is no change in schedule. Even though he is still shooting for his Diwali release, it won’t make any difference to either Chennai Express or Happy New Year”, informs an insider. Given the fact that just a couple of months remain for his yet untitled film and it is expected that at least an entire month would go into it’s promotion, one did wonder if Chennai Express, his immediate next film to go on floors, would be impacted. ”None whatsoever”, says a source attached to the Rohit Shetty film, “The film was always meant to start in September end or October beginning. That’s the way it stays.” Meanwhile Shah Rukh is also committed to Farah Khan’s Happy New Year. Would Shah Rukh manage to start the film’s shoot this year itself? ”Yes, we are definitely starting Happy New Year this year itself with a 5-6 days schedule in December. After the Christmas and New Year celebrations, we go full steam from January onwards”, says Farah Khan. Rohit Shetty too sent back a text stating that Chennai Express is all set to roll and would indeed begin on 27th September. With all being well with his films, guess audience can well expect a Shah Rukh double bill in quick succession next year, just like it was with Ra. One and Don 2, which literally arrived back to back last year.

ridevi is fit as a fiddle at 49, and the reason behind it, she says, is the right diet, power yoga and the quality time she spends with her two daughters. ”I believe whatever is inside, reflects on your face. I hate fried and junk food. Being happy and in a good state of mind, thinking positive really makes a difference. I love power yoga and love to play tennis with my children, maybe that is the reason,” Sridevi said. She spoke on the sidelines of the launch of Society Interiors magazine’s special issue, which features her on the cover. The actress is ready to make a comeback to the big screen after 15 years. She stars in ‘English Vinglish’, directed by filmmaker R. Balki’s wife, Gauri Shinde. Revealing the reason why she took up the project, Sridevi said: “I signed this movie because of the script. I fell in love with the script and of course, I loved Balki’s previous films like ‘Paa’ and ‘Cheeni Kum’ and I thought the audience would relate to the subject like I do. I am praying that everybody is going to love it.” ‘English Vinglish’, about a housewive’s struggle to learn English, is slated to release Oct 5. It will premiere at the Toronto Film Festival Sep 14.

irat Kohli will go on to score many centuries for India. The initial proof of that was provided by the manner in which he made his unbeaten half-century at the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Monday, which followed his first innings ton. It was an innings that guided the Indians to a hard-fought fivewicket win in the second and final Test and helped complete a 2-0 whitewash of the New Zealanders in the Airtel series. Set a target of 261 to be got in a little less than two days after the Kiwi innings, resuming on 232 for 9, was closed out for 248 on the fourth morning, a series of poor shots followed the first 50plus opening stand in 12 innings, to put the hosts in trouble at 166 for five. R Ashwin, later named Manof-the-Series for his 18-wicket haul, was the lone man with some batting ability left in the dressing room when Kohli, on an extremely watchful 8, was joined by his skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the side still 95 runs adirft. From then on and until Dhoni (48 not out, 94m, 60b, 3x4, 2x6) smashed an otherwise impressive Jeetan Patel over midwicket for a six when five were needed to complete the win, neither put a foot wrong. After that it was all about congratulatory hugs, the mild scramble to pick up the souvenir stump and acknowledging another sub-

stantial crowd that had made it to the venue on a working Monday. Kohli (51 not out, 130m, 82b, 9x4) was especially brilliant, in all ways at that, in choosing the balls to leave, in shot selection and overall temperament. He saw Cheteshwar Pujara and Suresh Raina fall to offie Patel, came in after Sachin Tendulkar no less had been castled yet again, but didn’t allow any of it to worry him. That the bowlers, naturally, had a fresh spring in their steps, was respected as he left alone as many deliveries as possible to start with. It was all part of a plan as Kohli slowly made each of them bowl to his strengths, the bowlers’ frustration apparent as they started bowling to him rather than at him. And there was Dhoni. Some play exquisite shots, but Dhoni, who can never be accused of that, plays exclusive ones, the type that you can’t play at home even if you tried! Let alone his strokes, even his defensive plods cannot be copied. But what people like Raina could do is pick up his calmness under pressure and not step out in the premeditated manner, as he did to Patel and threw away his wicket. Raina, could, of course, point to Virender Sehwag and say in what way was the latter’s dismissal better; both having been dismissed in similar fashion.

Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni lead their team to a har-fought five-wicket win in the second and final test against NZ. Kohli has earned even more praise for the manner in which he made his unbeaten half-century. Ashwin was named Man of the Series for his 18-wicket haul.

It wasn’t, but by then Sehwag (38, 57m, 33b, 7x4, 1x6) and his opening partner Gautam Gambhir (34, 81m, 58b, 7x4) -- whose guiding an innocuous away swinger from Trent Boult straight to Ross Taylor at first slip too was a poor effort - had each played a good hand raising 77. In any chase, especially big ones such as this, the start is most crucial, serving to calm the nerves in the dressing room, and the Delhi duo played their best knocks of the series in terms of quality to set it up well.

When Pujara (48, 122m, 104b, 7x4) and Tendulkar added a further 69 for the third wicket, the Kiwi shoulders had started drooping. It was then that another botched on-drive by Tendulkar, this time off Southee, and Pujara’s tendency to stretch forward to Patel’s short-of-length deliveries, which finally resulted in a batpad catch, brought the visitors back into the game. But try as they might, the Kiwi bowlers, backed as always by their agile fielders, just couldn’t

get Kohli to make a mistake. Elsewhere in Sharjah, Michael Hussey and Glenn Maxwell hit fighting half-centuries to help Australia beat Pakistan by three wickets in the third and final one-day international, taking the three-match series 2-1 on Monday and spoiling Pakistan’s chances of beating Australia for the first time since 2002. Australia won the first match by four wickets, before Pakistan levelled the series with a seven wicket win in the second match in Abu Dhabi.

The U19 boys have won the Cricket World Cup after beating the Australians by 6 wickets. The final was played in the coastal town of Townsville. The Australians made 225-8 from 50 overs. Indian skipper and Man of the Match Unmukt Chand lead his team to victory with an unbeaten 111*.

he young guns came out all blazing in the final in the coastal Australian town of Townsville to beat hosts and holders Australia by six wickets, powered by skipper Chand’s unbeaten 111 in a tense final on a bouncy pitch. Wicketkeeper Smit Patel (62*) played a perfect supporting role and their unbroken 130-run stand saw India win the U-19 cup the third time. Sent in to bat, Australia made 225-8, with captain William Bosisto scoring 87 not out. India started strongly but collapsed to 97-4 before Chand guided the winners to 227-4 in the 48th over. Winners in 2000 and 2008, India will relish this victory for long as it was achieved in demanding pitch conditions and

against rivals who were high on confidence after staying unbeaten - until the final. Chand was named the man of the match. India now are both the senior and junior world champions. MS Dhoni’s men captured the bigger prize at home last year. The seniors were generous in their praise of the juniors, having kept an eye on the proceedings in Australia during their Test series against New Zealand, which the Indian team has claimed with a 2-0 lead. “First of all congratulations to the U-19 World Cup team, Unmukt Chand batted really well,” said Dhoni. In his congratulatory message to the U-19 team, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said, “You are the sports stars of tomorrow.”

Romain Grosjean sorry for causing huge crash in Belgian Grand Prix

R

omain Grosjean has apologised and vowed to learn after causing a frightening first-corner smash in Sunday’s Belgian Grand Prix for which he was criticised by the stewards. It was the seventh incident early in a race that Grosjean has been involved in this year and the Frenchman appears to lack spatial awareness. On this occasion at the SpaFrancorchamps circuit, Grosjean tried to cut across Lewis Hamilton in his McLaren, only to bump wheels, sparking a chain reaction that resulted in a huge pile-up. At one stage on-board footage showed Grosjean’s Lotus come within inches of the championship leader Fernando Alonso’s helmet as it flew over the front of the Ferrari. Alongside Alonso and Hamilton, the Sauber driver Sergio Pérez’s race was also destroyed, resulting in the stewards deciding to ban Grosjean for next Sunday’s Italian Grand Prix at Monza. It is the first time a driver has been banned from a race since Michael Schumacher was excluded for two grands prix in 1994 for ignoring black flags during the British event.

Grosjean appeared shellshocked as he spoke, but was honest in admitting to his faults as he said: “I accept my mistake.” Grosjean, who was fined €50,000, added: “I misjudged the gap with Lewis. I thought I was in front of him. It was a small mistake, but a big incident. I’m very sorry, and I’m just glad nobody is hurt. That’s the main thing.” “Obviously it’s a very hard decision to hear, and when you love racing it’s hard. If there is more than one [mistake] then that is too many. It is too much. I know that. Some are not my fault, but I will analyse and I will try to not repeat it in the seven last races. For sure I don’t want to do any more [crashes], so I will work as much as I can to try and avoid those. “It’s just most of the time misjudgment of the space I have in front or the space I have on the side. It’s true we don’t see much in the mirrors and stuff like that and it goes very quick at the start. “I was 100% sure I was in front of Lewis, but I was not so I need to rethink about my view of the car.” Lotus’s team principal, Eric Boullier, who described the penalty as “severe”, believes the one-race ban will give Grosjean time to reflect on the error of his ways

‘Sad’ Ronaldo sparks off speculation

Indian national team captain Sunil Chhetri is now going to don the famous Green and White colours of SportingLisbon’s B team, the club that has given the world the likes of Luis Figo, Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani. Chhetri will become only the third Indian footballer to play in Europe following in the footsteps of bare-footed Mohammed Abdul Salim, and Baichung Bhutia.

Cristiano Ronaldo sparked a storm of media speculation over his future by saying he was ‘sad’ at the club. Ronaldo scored a brace in Madrid’s 2-0 win over Granada, but did not celebrate either goal. Quizzed by reporters after the game, he said “It could be because I am a bit sad. That is the only reason. When I don’t celebrate goals, I am not happy.” Ronaldo was elusive about his reasons, but did say it was something professional rather than personal that upset him.

the reasons for his unhappiness, saying only that it was professional rather than personal. “I am not going to say more. People know why,” he was quoted as saying in the media. Asked if he was upset because Barcelona midfielder An-

dres Iniesta was crowned UEFA Best Player in Europe on Thursday, he replied: “No, it’s not that. There are more important things.” Ronaldo had gone to see Real Madrid chairman Florentino Perez on Saturday to say he was

unhappy in the club, a report in sports daily Marca said. It said team-mates, who were not named, believed he had become more miserable since Iniesta was honoured. Ronaldo and Barcelona striker Lionel Messi had also been in the running.

Three doshas - Biological and psychological energies of your body

P

eople are so different from each other in nature, body type, preferences, strength, weaknesses etc. Has this thought ever crossed your mind? Whether you are a businessman or employed in an organization, you meet many people in a day. Their natures, perspectives, thinking ability, energy levels, eating habits, preferences everything is different. Even your family members are quite different in nature. One prefers to eat spicy food while the other prefers salad. One is cool, calm and composed while the other is short tempered. One is go getter and energetic while the other is laid back. Every idiosyncratic mannerism and preference is a signature of individual personality. Ayurveda doctors attribute these differences to ‘Doshas’. As per Ayurveda these idiosyncratic characteristics can be attributed to ‘Doshas’. Doshas are biological energies made up of five elements Water, Air, Space, Fire, Earth. Human body is made up of these five elements as well. A person is considered healthy, happy, composed with a sharp

Dr. C.R.S. Kumar

brain and intellect when these doshas are in balance. There are 3 types of Doshas: 1. Vata (Space and Air) 2. Pitta (Fire and Water) 3. Kapha (Earth and water) Vata Dosha:- Vata dosha shows characteristics of elements space and air. They are quick thinkers and tend to move fast. Like wind, when uncontrolled negative qualities overcome positive qualities. Vata constitution rules communication, quick thought process and creative zeal. Pitta Dosha: Biologically, pitta

governs small intestine, spleen, stomach, liver etc. As you can understand it is related to digestion. It automatically rules enzymes, acids and hormones. Psychologically, it rules perception, joy, anger, jealousy etc. Like Vata, uncontrolled pitta can make a person behave rash and egoistical. It is due to the fiery element of pitta. Kapha Dosha:- Kapha Individual will demonstrate qualities of Earth and Water. Biologically it rules fluids of the body and psychologically it rules patience,

tolerance, compassion etc. Like catastrophic flood, unruly water in body is dangerous. It can make a person lazy, depressed like too much of moist or dampness left in the air after a heavy rainfall. As aforesaid, a person who has all these three doshas in balanced state is considered perfectly in balance. In every person, one dosha is dominant while secondary dosha influences the person. Lifestyle, eating patterns, sleeping patterns are responded to by body and mind. When a person start living or doing that doesn’t suit

his body, mind and body respond. Ayurveda doctors confirm that going against the natural way of a constitution is known as Vikruti. Three state of doshas according to ayurveda doctors: 1. Balanced 2. Increased 3. Decreased While balanced state refers to the state when all the elements are in equilibrium, imbalanced state can be of 2 types. When a dosha increases more than it is required for the equilibrium state, it is called increased or aggravated state. When a dosha decreases and reduces to the level which is less for equilibrium state, it is called depleted state. Ayurveda doctors say that since Ayurveda looks at each case on its own merit, ayurvedic treatment to cure imbalances of doshas is given accordingly. Unlike any other treatment, ayurvedic treatment doesn’t believe in one size fits all. How To Speed Up Weight Loss

H

igh levels of fruits, vegetables, greens and beans help you lose weight because they are low in calories, high in volume and high in critically important nutrients. On a very practical level they fill you up, without loading you up with fat and calories. And when your stomach is filled up with high volume, low calorie food, there is less room for other bad stuff. There is also a growing body of evidence that shows that plant-based foods

help to control food cravings and overeating. They are nutrient dense, which simply means they are packed with all sorts of good things for you, which is something most of us know. But what is new is the idea that a diet very high (much more than the recommended 5 servings a day) can help turn off our cravings for processed foods. They can short circuit the food addiction cycle, and help provide a jolt to your weight loss efforts.

SPAS FOR A HEALTHY MIND AND BODY

T

here were times when your elders would say “we never felt the need to go for a spa treatment” but now times are changing. Not just the young but even the elders

are seen having a relaxing time at the spas these days. Today everyone is on their 24/7, be the males or females. Emotionally and physically both are drained because of the demand of work,

home and well, often a turbulent love life. That is precisely why the focus is now on wellness — a healthy balance of the mind, body and spirit. Body massage and spas

are a must in the to-do-list of everyone. Be it winters, summers or monsoons, body spas help you to relax and rejuvenate. These days people live a very stressful life and it is not easy to take

frequent holidays, so going to a spa is the next best option. In fact it is travelling that has changed people’s mindset. People travel so much that they are very well exposed to all these services. Internationally there is a culture that friends go to spa together and spend quality time and the same culture is now adopted in India too. Spending on oneself is no longer seen as a sin. “A saloon has to offer that something extra. From body buffing, body wraps and packs, to body treats and massages, people now want to revel in anything that would give them a sense of relaxation and rejuvenation. And wraps like aloe and lavender wrap, sea mud wrap, body treats like Vino therapic, organic milk and honey, as well as herbal, Ayurvedic, aroma and Swedish massages are quite popular now,” says Janvi Menghani, a spa therapist at Shades of Blackk Spalon. She adds, “Body massages are a must today. People should opt for body massages once in a week for relaxation and if they want to heal their pain it should be done twice in week. Getting body massage improves blood circulation, tones and improves elasticity of the skin and gives strength to the bones.”

Common virus could give you diabetes later

A

common viral infection could increase the risk of developing diabetes in older adults - and they may not even realise they have contracted it, a new study has warned. The Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is part of the herpes family and can be sexually-transmitted. It can also be spread via coughs and sneezes and it is estimated around half of all adults have been infected. The virus tends to remain dormant and most people don’t exhibit any symptoms, but if they do they are similar to flu. However, new research from Leiden University and the University of Tubingen in Germany suggests it is a significant risk factor for type 2 diabetes in the elderly. They found adults aged 85 and over who were infected with cytomegalovirus were about twice as likely to have type 2 diabetes compared with those not infected, the Daily Mail reported. The team analysed information from more than 500 elderly adults in the Netherlands. Around 80 per cent were in-

September 2012 Edition

fected with cytomegalovirus and 15 per cent had type 2 diabetes. While 17 per cent of those in-

fected with cytomegalovirus had type 2 diabetes, only 7.9 per cent of those without the virus had the condition.

The researchers found chronic infections including CMV can ‘’stress’’ the immune system. They suggested the virus could

be acting directly on pancreatic cells or indirectly by causing the immune system to attack the pancreas.

COLICY PAIN IN BABIES >>

The scariest thing for any parent is to find their baby crying constantly and hard and not knowing the cause of it. In most cases it can turn out to be colic (also called as infantile colic). About one in five babies develops colic. It is more common in boys and first born children. In most cases, colic is the worst pain a baby has experienced. Colic is a common infant disorder that

Raj Kothuru

causes cramping, discomfort and excessive crying. It is usually an acute, abdominal pain with intense spasmodic cramping. But as the baby cannot exactly describe its distress, their suffering can cause a lot of stress to the parent.

do not talk and so cannot complain about the pain or colic. Many times, putting hand on abdominal makes them cry a lot indicating that there may be abdominal pain or colic. Paediatricians often use the “Rule of Three” to diagnose colic: “A baby that cries for three or more hours per day, at least three times per week, within a three month period. • Otherwise healthy colicky babies cry hard and constant, at about the same time at least 3 days a week, often after feeding or meals, usually ending as abruptly as they begin. • Baby kicks a lot, pulls their legs up close, and makes tight fists. • Baby’s tummy seems hard, distended; the baby burps and passes gas often. • Baby makes crying sounds like it is in great pain. • Baby spits up frequently after feeding • Baby looks like its stomach hurts, and may stop crying after it passes gas or has a bowel movement.

SYMPTOMS: It is quite difficult to diagnose the abdominal pain in babies as they

CAUSES: Exact cause for Colic pain is not clear. But many factors can

contribute to it. • An immature nervous or digestive system • Swallowing of air especially when feeding • Reacting to something in mother’s diet (breastfed babies) • Allergic to some food in its own diet (like milk) IMPACT OF COLIC: Remember that colic can start anywhere in the first few weeks and usually disappears between 4 - 6 months of age. However, less commonly, inguinal hernia, bladder infection, appendicitis, pyloric stenosis, constipation etc may also give raise to abdominal pain. Hence it is wise to take your baby to your health practitioner to rule out other underlying causes. WHAT CAN BE DONE? No harsh medication should be given to the child for this condition. Eliminating foods that cause gas, use supportive herbal or homeopathic remedies to easily help relieve your baby’ s colic. Ensure that healthy food is taken by the mother is breast feeding. Try avoiding caffeine, dairy products, citrus fruits, soy products,

broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and spicy foods. If bottle-feeding, change the formula. Keep the baby in a sitting position when feeding, and massage their back to get rid of gas bubbles. Burp the baby after every feed. A tea made from fennel seed (Foeniculum vulgare) can be taken by the feeding mother to help relieve colic pain and increase digestion. HOMEOPATHIC HELP: Homeopathic remedies can very specifically, easily and safely help babies with colic, who display drastically different symptoms, like restless, irritable infants whose symptoms of colic are relieved by firm pressure. infants, in whom diarrhea and pain may occur after eating fruit, for colic with a distended abdomen with burping or belching or for colic that occurs when a breastfeeding mother eats rich food, drinks alcohol, or coffee or when baby insisting on being carried around, which relieves pain a little. Teen Depression Linked to Internet Overuse

September 2012 Edition

Teenagers who have an unhealthy dependence on the Internet are almost twice as likely to become depressed as other teens, giving parents yet another good reason to limit kids’ screen time. That’s the news from a study in Pediatrics, which tracked the Internet use of teenagers in China, where “Internet addiction” is considered a serious and growing problem. The researchers tracked 1,041 teenagers, finding out how much they used the Internet and whether that use was unhealthy. They used surveys similar to those used with pathological gamblers. The vast majority of the teens, 94 percent, weren’t pathological Internet users. But 6 percent were considered moderately at risk. Nine months later, those students were one-and-a-half times more likely to have symptoms of clinical depression than teens who were less dependent on the Internet, though they had not been depressed before. Depression is common among teenagers;

each year, an estimated 2 million teens and preteens develop clinical depression, and last year the federal government recommended that all teenagers be screened for depression. So parents may want to note the link between “Internet addiction” and depression, and keep a closer eye on children who depend on screen time as a pacifier or mood stabilizer. One-third of children exceed the two hours of daily TV and computer screen time recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics.
