Air India starts hourly flights on Mumbai/Delhi sector

R

esponding to the increase in demand for flights because of the holiday season, Air India, on Monday, launched a schedule that has flights operating between Mumbai and Delhi (both ways) every hour. “Passengers can travel on the Mumbai/Delhi/Mumbai sector every hour starting from 6am in the morning to 11pm in the

December 2012 Edition

evening daily,’’ said a release issued by the airline. The Mumbai /Delhi/ Mumbai sector of the airline is operated with Airbus A-320 and A- 321 aircraft. The hourly flight operation amounting to 18 flights on this route was started. ``Passengers can avail of mostly direct flights and a few one stopover flights on this sector,’’ the release said. Air India flies to 63 domestic stations and 27

international destinations. However the Air India hourly flights have not bought down airfares on this route. The reason is that there has been no increase in the number of flights operated by Air India on this route. The airline has stuck to its winter schedule, but earlier, like all other carriers, Air India too bunched its Mumbai-Delhi-Mumbai flights with a spike in flight frequency during

the peak hours of morning and evening. The difference now is that the airline has evenly spread out its flight schedule throughout the day to ensure one departure every hour from each of these airports. Air India one -way airfare on the route for the weekend and for next week started at Rs 8,600. The cheapest fares for a Mumbai-Delhi flight was being

offered by low-cost airlines and was in the range of Rs 8,200. But a few weeks ago, during the current peak season, the fares on this route were very dynamic with the cheapest fare starting at Rs 9,000-Rs 11,000 on some days, especially for early morning flights. The Air India scheme may get the lowest airfares on the Mumbai-Delhi route average out at Rs 8000-Rs 9000.

Angioplasty for Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit

elhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit underwent angioplasty for a blocked artery on Tuesday morning. Dr Ashok Seth, her cardiologist and chairman, cardiac services at Fortis Escorts Heart and Research Institute, performed the procedure. Angioplasty is the process of propping open a blocked artery in the heart using a metallic mesh tube called a stent. “She had breathlessness for the past three-four days. A CT scan suggested she had a blockage. An angiogram showed a 90% block in the right coronary artery and a stent was put in without wasting any time,” Dr Seth said. The procedure was performed at 8am on Tuesday. Dikshit’s immediate family — her son, daughter, daughter-in-law and sister — were present during the procedure. “We deliberately asked all her official staff to stay away, since that would have added stress,” he said. She was shifted from the critical care unit to the regular hospital room within a couple of hours. According to the doctors attending to her, she has been recovering well. “Though she is talking, we have advised that all officials and politicians be kept away. But,

knowing her...she will get back to her official duties from the hospital itself,” said Dr Seth, who has been her personal physician for more than a decade.

The CM has a history of heart ailments. In 2006, she had undergone a procedure called stenting. In 2001, Dikshit underwent an

open heart surgery after a blockage was detected in her arteries during a routine health checkup. The bypass surgery — con-

ducted by a team headed by cardiac surgeon Dr Naresh Trehan, now the CEO of Medanta — the Medicity, Gurgaon, and cardiologist Dr Seth — took five hours.

26/11 four years on: India’s grand terror checks a no-show

F

our years after the Mumbai terror attacks that lasted three days, leaving 166 dead, India still isn’t equipped to prevent another 26/11-type attack, at least going by the status of the three anti-terror initiatives of the UPA government - the National Intelligence Grid (Natgrid), National Counter

December 2012 Edition

Terrorism Centre (NCTC) and the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network & Systems. “None of the big ticket projects have reached a critical mass where they would alter our capabilities in terms of counterterrorism,” said security expert Ajai Sahni. Natgrid, which was meant to

set up a sophisticated network that could pull out data about any terrorist suspect within a matter of seconds, was P Chidambaram’s pet project when he was home minister. But when Chidambaram returned to the finance ministry, the project lost its most ardent supporter, and consequently,

the momentum. Currently, enmeshed in bureaucratic and inter-departmental power struggles, it runs the risk of falling on its face. The NCTC - the most adventurous project of the three - has been shoved into the deep freezer after chief ministers protested that the Centre was giving itself

the right to arrest terrorists anywhere in the states. And, the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network & Systems, which seeks to link 15,000 police stations in the country, hasn’t taken off either. Sahni, executive director at the institute for conflict management, attributes these no-shows to the absence of technical expertise within the police leadership. “Our vulnerability remains despite some half-hearted, hesitant steps,” former UP and BSF chief Prakash Singh said, counting NSG hubs, creation of NIA and a coastal security plan as steps forward. “But poor police strength is the weakest link in the entire security architecture.” According to the Bureau of Police Research and Development’s latest report, all the states put together had just about 10,000 more policemen in 2011 than in 2009, though home ministry officials say that recruitment - initially sluggish due to lack of adequate training facilities - has picked up remarkably. Also, going by the number of VIPs making a beeline to get themselves armed police guards, the security and intelligence measures put in place after 26/11 haven’t beefed up confidence in public security arrangements.

‘Shivaji Park is still an option for Thackeray memorial’

C

hief minister Prithviraj Chavan might have publicly vetoed Shiv Sena’s demand for a Bal Thackeray memorial at Shivaji Park, but Sena leaders continue to keep it on their list of options. Sources said the Sena is actively considering the park, along with the Mayor’s bungalow located across the road from it. The Municipal Kreeda Bhavan, a civicrun gymkhana opposite Shivaji Park is another contender. The final decision will be taken by Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray after the 13day mourning period is over, Sena leaders said. Bal Thackeray passed away on November 17. Mayor Sunil Prabhu denied

fixed, the Sena is considering several ways to commemorate its beloved leader. “We want to build a fitting memorial for Balasaheb. We don’t want merely a bust of him. We want a way to display his speeches, cartoons and his photographs in an elaborate manner,” said another Sena

leader, requesting anonymity. Meanwhile, senior Sena leader Manohar Joshi, while speaking to reporters in Nashik said the Sena will ensure that a memorial is built at Shivaji Park. “Although we are yet to take a call on the location, if Sainiks decide that the memorial will be built at

Shivaji Park we will not take no as an answer from anyone, be it the chief minister or even the prime minister.” Congress party spokesperson Sachin Sawant said it was “unfortunate that a leader of Joshi’s stature was using the language of force.”

having taken any decision so far. “We are still deliberating over various locations at which we can build the memorial.” Sena corporator and civic standing committee chairman Rahul Shewale said,“There are a number of options and Shivaji Park remains one of them. However, Uddhavji will make a decision soon.” A senior Sena leader, who did not wish to be named said, “The state government and other senior state-level leaders have been asking us to settle on the Mayor’s bungalow as the memorial site. They insist that Shivaji Park is not a feasible option.” While the location is yet to be

Delhi govt eyes 15% quota for poor in private schools

T

he Delhi government is set to propose an additional 15% reservation for children from poor families in most private schools in the city. According to the proposal, which will be presented before the high court once it’s cleared by the chief minister, the quota will be applicable to admissions made from class II to XII. The reservation, if passed by the court, will affect 394 private

recognized schools in the capital that have been allotted land at concessional rates by government agencies. The proposal is in response to a high court order. The schools, according to lawyer Khagesh Jha whose PIL resulted in the proposal, include “all the big names you can think of”. As per their lease deeds, these schools were obliged to reserve seats for economically weaker

sections (EWS) although there was no unanimity on the extent of the quota. “In response to a PIL about schools not complying with obligations in the lease deeds, the high court had issued an interim order in 2007 that had fixed reservation at 15%,” says a senior official in the department of education. However, in 2011, a new set of rules came into the picture with the Right to Education

Act. RTE enforced reservation of 25% but that was only at the entry level. Admissions till Class I are now covered by RTE. Many schools, now reserving 25% seats for EWS students at entry, were under the impression that the RTE’s provision nullifies whatever obligations were spelt out in their respective lease deeds. The list of schools that have received land includes all major school chains such as Modern School, Delhi Public School, Bal Bharti and Springdales, as well as most other well known institutions — Vasant Valley, Sanskriti, St Columbus, Mother’s International and Sardar Patel, to name just a few. “The RTE provides for 25% reservation at entry point. The high court asked us to come up with a policy that combines the RTE admission guidelines with the lease deed obligations that have never been superseded or repudiated legally. We are not in a position to ignore this and following the court’s interim order, the reservation for EWS on admissions after Class I has been made 15% across the board,” said Kiran Walia, Delhi’s education minister.

Walia added that one-third of the 15% will be for the school’s own staff and the rest for outsiders. The decision is awaiting the approval of chief minister Sheila Dikshit and once cleared, will be presented before the court. “The confusion was the result of a DOE notification dated January 1, 2011 that stated it was ‘in supersession’ of the notification based on the 2007 high court order that had upheld the validity of obligations mentioned in the lease deeds. But following this new notification, schools started fulfilling the reservation requirements of RTE alone ignoring the lease deeds,” said Jha. Another petition filed in 2011, this time by a parent, resulted in the high court directing the department in September 2012, to make the “necessary policy decision” within eight weeks. Jha, who, along with Ashok Agarwal, had filed the petition in 2011, says that number of students sometimes doubles in higher classes. “We have found through RTIs that number of seats increase manifold, typically after class six. Entire sections are added. Now for new admissions they’ll have to have reservations,” says Jha.

Where is India, we need it, ASEAN says

A

s Prime Minister Manmohan Singh arrives in Phnom Penh on Sunday, he is likely to hear a common refrain in this part of the world: India is sorely needed here, but India is too slow. It’s a critical time for ASEAN countries -- they are struggling to remain cohesive and stay relevant. They are caught in a bruising territorial dispute with the big Heavy in the region, China. And now the even bigger US is sailing into their waters and telling them how to stand up to China, with its help. US defense secretary Leon Panetta

told everyone “we are deepening our military engagement with our allies and partners in this region in order to ensure that we are able to promote security and prosperity in this region for many years to come.” For many, India is a natural balancer in this region. India struck roots here hundreds of years ago, and there are signs all around. But in the current strategic debate roiling the region, India is a peripheral presence. India’s only statement so far has been to endorse the importance of ensuring freedom of navigation and mineral resources in the

troubled wats of the South China Sea. In a joint statement with the Chinese, India also emphasized its stakes in the Asia-Pacific. That lone position by the MEA, India believes may have absolved it of all other responsibility. With $80 billion in bilateral trade, India needs a louder ASEAN policy. “ASEAN needs India now, not 10 years later,” says Kavi Chongkittavorn, a regional expert, of the Jakarta-based ERIA group. “we need strategic support from India about the way forward. How do we deal with the advent of big powers and still retain our relevance?” there is much talk about “ASEAN-led” and the “centrality” of ASEAN, but everyone knows its in danger of being swamped. China watchers here say Beijing is likely to get more tough in the next six months, as the leadership transition will only be completed by next March. This is the time, they say, India needs to ramp up its engagement and support in this region. But there is no Indian voice that is heard here. Seoung Rathavy, secretary of state of the Cambodian foreign ministry, said 200 senior officials have gathered here to discuss the agenda of the key summits. She told journalists, “implementation of a declaration

of conduct on the South China Sea is crucial for political and social stability of ASEAN.” The South China Sea disputes would be discussed at every meeting in the several summits that will be held here. The Chinese are unlikely to agree to the declaration of conduct on the issue, regarding it as their sovereign territory. Indonesian experts, familiar with their country’s position, said very little forward movement would be expected. For many, the US “pivot” is a mixed blessing. While many countries here are happy to get external support as they deal with the rise of China, there remains some uncertainty about whether the US would actually come to their help. For many, Vietnam and Philippines have been “burnt”. In 2011, the US stopped short of fully backing up these countries during their respective stand-offs with China on the South China Sea. Cambodia needs the kind of defence interest from India like Vietnam has. India should offer joint exercises with everyone in this region. Most of them have old naval fleets, and even with modest means, India can help upgrade them. In fact, India needs to work

harder with naal cooperation with all the ASEAN countries. In 2011, Indian naval vessels paid port calls to many in the region before ending up in Shanghai. That should become a run-ofthe-mill affair. A look at the map will show how India, with its still superior navy, can successfully block off the Malacca Straits for the Chinese if a conflict breaks out in the Himalayas. For India to carry out a successful blockade, it needs all the littoral countries on its side. India, many ASEAN analysts here believe, should openly reiterate its position on an issue which will deeply affect India’s own future. There is a sense that India is piggybacking on the US. Even Cambodia, which is believed to be close to China, is crying out for an alternative partner. The India linkages are for all to see, from the Ganesha idols to the Mekong river. “Connectivity” is India’s mantra but it’s China that’s putting stakes on the ground. China is doing more on the Mekong river and China is building the KunmingSingapore links, while India’s trilateral highway to Thailand through Myanmar will take many more years to realise. The wasted opportunities are stacking up.

Two Zee editors sent to police custody, notice to promoter

Ricky Ponting retires

Delhi court on Wednesday dismissed the bail plea of two senior Zee Group editors arrested for allegedly demanding Rs. 100 crore for not broadcasting reports on a Jindal group company’s role in the coal scam. Metropolitan magistrate Gomati Manocha sent Zee News editor Sudhir Chaudhary and Zee Business’ Samir Ahluwalia to police custody till November 30 for further interrogation. What’s more, a senior police officer said Zee Group promoter Subhash Chandra and Zee News

MD Puneet Goenka — alleged by Delhi police to have been involved in the bid to extort money from the company owned by Congress MP Naveen Jindal — were served notices to join the investigation. But the Zee journalists’ counsel Rebecca John denied the charges: “The first information report [FIR] is nothing but a counterblast to put media on the back foot.” She said the manner in which police arrested the two senior editors was a direct violation of the freedom of the press. Opposing the need for custo-

dial interrogation, John made a counter-allegation that the accused were approached by the Jindal group. But additional public prosecutor Rajiv Mohan said it was clear from the forensic report that the audio and video evidence was not doctored, he said. Both the journalists have been booked under section 384 (extortion), 420 (cheating), 120 B (criminal conspiracy) and 511 (punishment for attempting to commit offences punishable with imprisonment for life or other imprisonment) of the IPC.

ormer Australian captain Ricky Ponting on Thursday called time on his Test career, announcing this week’s clash against South Africa in Perth will be his last. “A few hours ago I let the team know that this upcoming Test will be my last,” he said at a hastily-called press conference, adding that he will continue to play for Tasmania in the domestic competition this summer. Ponting, who turns 38 next month, has failed in three innings against the Proteas during draws in Brisbane and Adelaide and pressure has been building on the 167-Test veteran ahead of Friday’s series decider in Perth. He will equal Steve Waugh’s mark of 168 Tests in the upcoming match -- the most in the history of Australian cricket. The Tasmanian, who has 13,336 Test runs to his name, including 41 centuries with only Indian legend

Sachin Tendulkar scoring more, said it was time to call it a day. “Over the last couple of weeks my level of performance hasn’t been good enough,” he said. “My passion and love for the game hasn’t changed but at the end of the day (the decision) was based on my results. “In this series so far they have not been up to the level required of batsmen and players in the Australian team. “I’m glad I have got the opportunity to finish on my terms.” “Decision to retire was taken my me, not by selectors,” said Ricky Ponting after announcing his retirement. The Australian cricker has scored 13,366 Test runs at an average of 52.21. Ponting was dropped from the one-day team but has remained in the Test side as a specialist batsman with disappointing results.

Bhagat Singh chowk: Pak court extends stay on renaming roundabout

A

Pakistani court extended by three weeks a stay on a move to rename a traffic roundabout in Lahore after legendary freedom fighter Bhagat Singh. Justice Nasir Saeed Sheikh of the Lahore high court extended the stay after the Punjab government and the Lahore city district government failed to submit their

responses to a petition challenging the renaming of Fawara Chowk at Shadman after Bhagat Singh. The Tehrik-e-Hurmat-e-Rasool, a movement launched by the Jamaat-ud-Dawah, had filed the petition against a move by authorities to rename the roundabout. Zahid Butt, a local trader who filed the petition on behalf of the organisation, claimed

that RAW, India’s external intelligence agency had funded the Bhagat Singh Foundation to raise the issue. He claimed the Foundation lobbied the Dilkash Lahore Committee that recommended the renaming of the roundabout. Senior JuD leader Maulana Amir Hamza, who heads the Tehrik-e-Hurmat-e-Rasool, has said the group will not allow places to be named after Hindus, Sikhs or Christians. “Pakistan is a Muslim country and such ideas cannot be appreciated,” he said recently. The JuD wrote a strongly worded letter to district administration chief Noorul Amin Mengal and other government officials, warning them not to rename the roundabout after a “Hindu freedom fighter”. The Dilkash Lahore Committee had rejected all objections and asked authorities to notify the new name for the roundabout without delay. In a related development, civil society activists have filed two applications in the Lahore High Court, asking it to make them parties to the case challenging the renam-

ing of the roundabout. Activists Taimur Rehman and Saeeda Diep filed the ap-

plications in the Lahore High Court yesterday through lawyer Yasir Latif Hamdani.

Man featured in Aamir Khan’s show on honour killing murdered

F

ive months after a young couple appeared on Aamir Khan’s television show, Satyamev Jayate, and talked about the threat to their lives because they had married without their parents’ consent, the man was shot dead near his village in western Uttar Pradesh on Thursday evening, allegedly by his wife’s brothers. Abdul Hakim, 28, and his 26-year-old wife Mehwish, both Muslims hailing from families with different social standing, had been living under the protection of an NGO in Delhi since May last year. About 15 days ago, Hakim and his wife, who is nine months pregnant, went to meet his ailing mother near Adoli village in Bulandshahr district. He was shot there, while on his way home from the local police station. The couple, who were neighbours at Adoli, ran away together two years ago after marrying secretly in June 2009. According to Mehwish, her family was opposed to the match because Hakim was poor and belonged to the ‘lower’ Fakir community. Ha-

kim’s father was earlier allegedly killed by Mehwish’s family in the village, although it was shown as suicide in police records. “They would not let us live in peace and now they have taken their revenge,” she told “The couple was scared even before coming to the show,” Aamir Khan told reporters in Jaipur. “We didn’t force anyone to come to the show. The incident is highly unfortunate and shameful.” UP police, meanwhile, have spun an elaborate theory saying the killing was an act of “personal enmity” going back to the time when the couple was in Delhi. But Mehwish and her Delhi-based shelter-providers, Love Commandos, said it was a clear case of murder involving her brothers. Bulandshahr circle officer Lal S Yadav said Hakim was a victim of a family feud that had its roots in Delhi. “The girl’s family had come to accept the marriage. Nothing indicates this murder is linked to the couple’s marriage,” he claimed. Yadav added that Hakim’s nephew, Salman, had entered into a brawl on June 6 and the alleged killers wanted him to take back the police case lodged against them. “Hakim’s death was a result of this feud,” said Yadav. The couple, after a 12-year courtship, had secretly married on June 5, 2009. They kept living with their respective parents till Mehwish’s family fixed her marriage for November 11, 2010.

The couple then eloped on October 29. Till then, exchanging letters across a brick wall was the only source of communication between the two. Mehwish’s family then announced a bounty on the couple’s capture. In May 2011, the pair started living in a shelter in Delhi provided by Love Commandos, an organization that works to eradicate ‘honour killings’. This was the first time they had returned to their village, where Hakim also had a police case lodged against him of kidnapping Mehwish. The nation became aware of the couple’s struggles when they were featured in Aamir Khan’s Satyamev Jayate on June 3. “On June 30, the National Commission for Women ordered UP police to protect the two. But this directive was ignored. They asked Hakim to come down to Bulandshahr to record his statement. When he refused, they never contacted him again,” Sanjoy Sachdev, chairman of Love Commando, said. The area SSP, however, offered to review his security. Meanwhile, a girl was born to the couple bringing fresh hope that relations between the two families would normalize. But that was not to be. “I didn’t know people of my own village had arranged for weapons to kill us. I am the next target,” a shocked Mehwish said. Hakim’s family had moved to Bhargardi village, 2km away from Adoli. But his father, Abdul

Hafiz, refused to leave his ancestral house and stayed back. On July 6, 2011 Hakim’s nephew Salman visited an ailing Hafiz to know about his well-being and on his way home, he was allegedly assaulted by Mehwish’s relatives. When Salman reported the matter to the police, a noncognizable report was lodged. Enraged over the police case, the accused allegedly reached the house of an ailing Abul Hafiz, hanged him upside from a tree right outside his house and assaulted him in full public view. When Abdul Hafiz’s wife Shahooran, who had come to stay with her ailing husband, intervened, she too was assaulted. Hafiz died hanging from the tree. The police, however, saw the incident as suicide. The couple was on the run when Mehwish gave birth to a baby girl who was now a yearand-a-half. In August 2012, when Mehwish got pregnant for the second time, she reached

Bhargardi village to stay with Hakim’s family for the delivery. Hakim used to visit her once or twice a week. On November 20, Hakim visited Mehwish when he was informed that people were on the lookout for him. Hakim lodged a complaint with the local police the same day but no action followed. On Noveber 22, he was walking back after buying medicines for his wife when he was intercepted by three persons who shot him dead in public view around 4.30pm. Aamir Khan said he is aware of the incident and would speak to the authorities to ensure the safety of the rest of the family. He described the murder as “disturbing and unfortunate”. “I will speak to government authorities in UP to help and ensure the family is safe. The culprits must be brought to book. The case must be registered on basis of facts,” the actor said.

NRI hedge fund manager freed on $5 million bond

A

n Indian-origin hedge fund portfolio manager, charged with participating in one of the “most lucrative” insider trading schemes ever, has been released on a five million dollar bail after he appeared in Manhattan federal court here. Mathew Martoma, 38, appeared in a brief court hearing before US magistrate Judge James Cott and was informed of his rights as a criminal defendant. Martoma, who was arrested last week at his home in Boca Raton, Florida, did not enter any plea and the judge set a next court hearing of December 26. Martoma has been charged with using material, non-public information that he received from a doctor on the clinical trial of an Alzheimer’s disease drug to make profits and avoid losses for his hedge fund in an amount totaling approximately 276 million dollars. The US Securities and Exchange Commission have also filed a civil insider trading case against him on similar charges. A Stanford University graduate, Martoma is the son of Indian immigrants and was born Ajai Mathew Mariamdani Thom-

as. He later changed his name in 2003. Under the new bail requirements, Martoma would have to post two million dollars in cash

or property by next week. While free on bail, his movements will be restricted within the US. Manhattan’s top federal

prosecutor Preet Bharara had last week brought the charges against Martoma, who had worked with CR Intrinsic Investors, an affiliate of SAC Capi-

tal Advisors. SAC is owned by hedge fund titan Steven Cohen, who is among one of the richest men in the world.

First man to visit 201 nations without using plane

B

ritish globetrotter Graham Hughes has become the first person to visit all 201 countries in the world - without using a plane. The 33-year-old adventurer from Liverpool used buses, taxis, trains and his own two feet to travel 160,000 miles or 256,000 km in 1,426 days - all on a shoestring budget of just $100 a week. He spent four days “crossing

open ocean in a leaky boat” to reach Cape Verde, was jailed for a week in the Congo for being a “spy”, was arrested trying to “sneak into” Russia and had to be “rescued from Muslim fundamentalists by a Filipino ladyboy called Jenn”. On Monday, Hughes ended the epic four-year journey by crossing into Juba, the capital of South Sudan, which did not even exist when he set off from his hometown

of Liverpool on New Year’s Day 2009. “I love travel, and I guess my reason for doing it was I wanted to see if this could be done, by one person travelling on a shoestring,” he said. “I think I also wanted to show that the world is not some big, scary place, but in fact is full of people who want to help you even if you are a stranger.”

Palghar again: Teen grilled over Facebook post

T

post

he controversy over the arrest of two Palghar girls over a Facebook had not even begun

to subside, when another youth from the same area in Thane district near Mumbai was questioned by police on

Wednesday for an allegedly “abusive” Facebook post against Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray.

He was eventually let off following investigations. Sunil Vishwakarma, 19, a high school dropout is currently

pursuing a computer course. On Wednesday afternoon, a group of MNS activists brought him to the local police station claiming he had posted abusive literature against their chief Raj Thackeray as well as the Marathi manoos. “MNS workers traced Vishwakarma and handed him to the police. We demand strict action,” said Kundan Sankhe, Thane district chief of MNS. However, by evening it was clear that a fake account using Vishwakarma’s name had been used to post the abusive content. A senior official said Vishwakarma is now the “complainant since he has been victimised”. Acting SP Anil Kumbhare said a case under section 66 A of the Information Technology act has been registered against unidentified persons and police are now trying to trace the guilty. On November 18, two girls from Palghar, Shaheen Dhadha, 21, and Rinu Shrinivasan, 20, were arrested after they posted a comment on Facebook criticising the Mumbai shutdown. Palghar police booked the girls for hurting religious sentiments. Two officers were eventually suspended for the unlawful arrest.

DOE, NASA testing fission reactor for spaceflight “Why don’t we have warp drive yet? Well, because, according the “Star Trek” lore, inventor Zefram Cochrane hasn’t been born yet.”

B

aby Zefram is due in about 20 years, but in the meantime NASA and the Department of Energy are working on something somewhat tantalizing if you’re planning a deep-space probe. Researchers including engineers from Los Alamos National Laboratory have demonstrated a nuclear reactor that could power spaceflight. It’s nowhere near as powerful as NASA’s conceptual

antimatter engine--the Demonstration Using Flattop Fissions (DUFF) experiment produces just 24 watts of electricity. The researchers used a heat pipe to cool a small nuclear reactor and power a Stirling engine, according to the lab, yielding “a simple, reliable space power system.” It was the first space nuclear reactor experiment in the U.S. since 1965. A proposed craft using the system would be powered by a 50-pound hunk of enriched uranium that sits inside a 12-inch reactor core, as the video below illustrates. Having more power aboard a probe could mean more instruments or faster data transmission.

This uranium-based reactor would use nuclear fission energy to power small spacecraft and possibly installations on Mars. Heat pipes -- a cooling technology used in many laptops -- distribute the fission heat to eight Stirling engines that would produce about 500 watts of power. In contrast, the CassiniHuygens probe is powered by 72 pounds of plutonium-238, which generated about 880 watts at its

launch in 1997. The researchers believe the reactor could be adapted to applications such as power plants on the surface of Mars, or more elaborate spacecraft. “The heat pipe and Stirling engine used in this test are meant to represent one module

that could be used in a space system,” Marc Gibson of NASA Glenn Research Center said a Los Alamos statement. “A flight system might use several modules to produce approximately one kilowatt of electricity.” Dilithium crystals it ain’t, but let’s be optimistic.

Aakash 2 to be showcased at UN

T

he Ministry of External Affairs will go ahead with the planned showcase of Aakash 2 tablets citing it as India’s technology innovation at United Nations, despite allegations of some tablets been purchased off the shelf from firms in China. In an email to ET’s query to India’s UN Mission in New York, Joint secretary at Ministry of External Affairs Syed Akbaruddin replied that India’s UN Mission ‘will go ahead’ with the event despite the allegations. “The decision to unveil the Aakash 2 at the United Nations (during India’s Presidency of the UNSC) was taken after it was confirmed that the device would be formally unveiled by the Hon’ble President of India on November 11, 2012. Hence it will go ahead.” India has the rotating presidency of UN Security Council for the month of November. The device is expected to be unveiled in the presence of UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon and other member nations. The MEA spokesperson said that the device was designed at the request of the Ministry of Human Resource Development of the Government of India. “Given its cost competitiveness, it aimed to bridge the digital divide by providing access to quality education for all. It was

the successful implementation of this ‘idea’ and such technologies, that we intend to show case, using the platform provided by the United Nations, which is a common practice amongst developing countries.” India’s permanent representative to the United Nations Hardeep Singh Puri earlier this month told media that a presentation on Aakash would be held on November 28, at the UN’s global headquarters in New York. Media and member states would also be invited to the event. Indian Mission may also distribute the tablets to some member states. Aakash 2 got mired into controversies last week after some Indian and global media including ET published reports of how several tablets supplied to the Indian government were picked off the shelf from firms in China by the contracted firm Datawind. ET cited invoices of purchase from firms such as Trend Grace Limited, Kalong Technology Co Ltd and Dasen International Electronics Co Ltd. UK based Datawind denied the allegations. Datawind CEO Suneet Singh Tuli said, the touch panels used in the device were manufactured in Montreal but “were consolidated in Hong Kong or China” for expediency.

An app by Indians is No. 1 grosser on the Apple iPad

Magzter, an online magazine store developed by two Chennai-based entrepreneurs Girish Ramdas and Vijayakumar Radhakrishnan, has become the top grosser on the Apple iPad.

M

agzter, an online magazine store developed by two Chennai-based entrepreneurs

Girish Ramdas and Vijayakumar Radhakrishnan, has become the top grosser on the Apple iPad.

Magzter has overtaken international favourites and long standing grossers like Angry Birds, NY Times for iPad,

‘Microsoft Surface is a mess.’

T

he initial buzz around Surface -- Microsoft’s answer to Apple’s iPad -- is not the stuff tech legends are made of. “Surface is a mess,” said David Morgenstern, technology writer . “For all the years that Microsoft had to manage this transition, the Surface machines and OS don’t have all the little bits and pieces nailed down and polished. It’s all very first generation.” “Black Friday”, the day after the US Thanksgiving holiday, often serves as a sales bonanza for the hottest new IT devices has gone, however, so far the Surface appears to be sticking to store shelves, industry experts say. Microsoft is not yet divulging sales data for its new product and analysts caution that it is still too early to say whether the software giant’s big foray into touchscreen hardware is on the ropes. But anecdotal information suggests that while consumers have shown some interest in the Surface, that “interest was not necessarily leading to sales”, said Trip Chowdhry, analyst with Global Equities Research. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer told a French newspaper that Surface sales were off to a “modest start”, a choice of

December 2012 Edition

words followed quickly by a two percent drop in Microsoft shares - and a swift damage control scramble by the company’s public relations teams. One bit of anecdotal evidence widely reported by US tech blogs was a report from researchers with the investment firm Piper Jaffray who monitored foot traffic literally the numbers of people entering and exiting - at one Microsoft retail store in the sprawling Mall of America in the US state of Minnesota. According to that report, there was 47 per cent less customer traffic at the Microsoft store than at the Apple outlet situated directly across the hall. Reviews of the Surface have been mixed so far. While critics praise the look and the design, they were less than thrilled about the software, functionality, and the retail price starting at $500. Another gripe is the Window’s app store that has only a fraction of the applications unlike Apple’s App Store that has millions of them. Notably missing are applications for popular social networks Facebook and Twitter. But the Redmond-based Microsoft has heavily invested in the Surface’s, launched an aggressive marketing campaign that reportedly cost

Clash of Clans and Frontline Commando. Clash of Clans had briefly recovered its No. 1 spot, but when we last looked at the list of top grossers on the iPad, Magzter was back at the top. The iPad has over 700,000 apps. “Even in the number of daily downloads, Magzter has crossed other reading apps like Flipboard, Pulse and Zite,” Ramdas, CEO of Magzter, said. It has 4.5 million users globally, many of them in the US, the market that the company is most focused on. Magzter has more than 1,500 magazines in its store. About 400 of them are Indian magazines. “We have readers from all over the world who buy magazine subscriptions every day. Cross border selling is helping the digital magazine industry by generating more global readers,” Radhakrishnan, president of Magzter said. The app was launched 17 months ago, but received massive traction over the past 45 days thanks to some Facebook sharing features that were added to the app. “Now, if you like the cover of a magazine, you can share it on Facebook, and if your friends like it, they can click to come to

our store to buy it. This has had a major viral effect,” Ramdas said. Magzter’s popularity is also because of the ease with which publishers can use it to publish replica versions of the magazine or even to create highly interactive magazines. “We give complete control to publishers and they get to decide what they want to give to their readers,” Radhakrishnan said. Magazine prices are also heavily discounted, by as much as 50% in many cases, which also adds to Magzter’s allure. Another big advantage of Magzter, compared to some of its other online newsstand competitors, is that you can buy a magazine on one platform, say Apple’s iOS, and read it on another one of your devices that runs on the Android or Windows 8 platform. Ramdas graduated from the College of Engineering, Guindy, in Chennai. He ran an IT services company in Chennai called Dot Com Infoway and then started a magazine called Galatta Media focused on south Indian films. He later created an iPhone and iPad app for the magazine, which gave him the idea to create a global online magazine newsstand.

What do you think?

more than $1 billion to generate positive, youthful mojo and prepare the ground for early sales. And while Microsoft has resorted to pop-up stores, billboards, and splashy TV ads with big name US celebrities including actress Jessica Alba and singer Gwen Stefani, apparently even some of the firm’s hired big guns still prefer

Apple products. For instance, media mogul Oprah Winfrey’s endorsement of the Surface raised eyebrows when she tweeted her love for Microsoft’s new tablet, from her iPad. Still, tech experts point out that it has not yet been even one month since the Surface hit stores and say it is too early to discern the fate Microsoft’s

latest creation. “Microsoft still has a huge market share advantage in desktops and laptops: more than 93 per cent. Yes, it’s made mistakes in mobile computing and tablets. And perhaps again with its latest Windows release. But Microsoft isn’t going anywhere and its problems may turn around,” said Morgenstern in a blog post.

Israel ahead of US in race to supply ‘tank-killer’ missiles to India

srael has upstaged the US in the ongoing race to bag the huge deal to supply third-generation anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs) to the Indian Army, in a project which could well be worth $1 billion eventually. Defence ministry sources said the plan to go in for the American FGM-148 Javelin ATGMs has “virtually been shelved” because of Washington’s reluctance to provide full military knowhow licensed “transfer of technology (ToT)’’ - to allow India to indigenously manufacture the “tank killers’’ in large numbers after an initial off-the-shelf purchase. Instead, the Army has already completed extensive trials of the Israeli ‘Spike’ ATGM, which like Javelin is also a shoulderlaunched and fire-and-forget missile, under varied conditions in plains, deserts and mountains. “The staff evaluation is now in progress as the next step in the procurement process,’’ said a source. The Javelin imbroglio has once again rekindled long-held fears in the Indian defence establishment about the US not being a reliable longterm supplier of cutting-edge military technology. India also detests American conditions on “intrusive end-user inspections’’

of weapons sold to its armed forces. The US has notched up military sales worth over $8 billion to India in the last few years, including mega deals for C-130J ‘Super Hercules’, C-17 Globemaster-III and P-8I maritime patrol aircraft, but they did not involve licensed production in India. The AGTM project, in contrast, involves ToT since the 1.13-million Army wants to equip all its 356 infantry battalions with the man-portable missiles as an effective counter to Pakistani and Chinese main battle tanks. A bulk of the estimated 2,000 launchers and 24,000 missiles required for this are planned for production by defence PSU Bharat Dynamics (BDL) after getting requisite ToT from the selected foreign vendor. With General Bikram Singh identifying infantry modernization as a major thrust area, the Army wants to complete the induction of these 2.5-km range advanced ATGMs by the end of the 12th Plan (2017). At present, infantry units are making do with secondgeneration Milan (2-km range) and Konkurs (4-km) ATGMs, produced by BDL under licence from French and Russian companies, which are wireguided and do not have fire-andforget capabilities.

QUOTEUNQUOTE “I need a guy who can cook for me...”

Overall, the Army has an “authorized holding’’ for over 81,000 different kinds of ATGMs, which are critical to stem enemy armoured attacks, but does not have even half of that number in its inventory. A part of the deficiency will be met by the induction of the long-delayed indigenous thirdgeneration Nag ATGMs, which are vehicle and helicoptermounted, with a 4-km strike range. The Army has already

placed an initial order for 443 Nag missiles and 13 Namicas (Nag missile tracked carriers). If Israel, the second-largest defence supplier to India after Russia, does indeed stitch up the ATGM project, it will be the third major missile programme between the two countries. They are already collaborating in two surface-to-air missile (SAM) systems, under which deliveries are slated to begin soon. While the DRDO-Israeli

Aerospace Industries (IAI) project for long-range-SAM to arm Indian warships is worth Rs 2,606 crore, the medium-rangeSAM one for IAF is worth Rs 10,076 crore. From Heron and Searcher UAVs, Harpy and Harop “killer’’ drones to Barak anti-missile defence systems and Green Pine radars, Python and Derby air-to-air missiles, Israel notches up military sales to India roughly worth $1 billion every year.

T

he Centre has told the Supreme Court that deaf and dumb government employees could not be equated with blind and physically handicapped ones, who face much more difficulty in commuting and are hence given double the transport allowance paid to other employees. Citing a health ministry office memorandum, the government said it was advised that “it would not be just and fair to equate the disability of deaf and dumb persons with those of blind persons in so far as grant of transport allowance facility is concerned”. The ministry in the 2003 memorandum said that deaf and dumb people generally do

not require physical assistance for commuting to and from their residence to the place of duty. However, the proposal to give deaf and dumb employees enhanced transport allowance was again considered in 2006. The Centre said the Sixth Central Pay Commission did not make any recommendation on this aspect while revising the transport allowance. “As per the recommendation of the commission, as accepted by the government, statusquo continues regarding the categories of physically disabled employees eligible for transport allowance at enhanced rate,” it said. “In view of the aforesaid position, it is not considered

feasible to extend the benefit of enhanced transport allowance to hearing impaired employees,” the government said. However, solicitor general R F Nariman sought 12 weeks time from a bench of Justices K S Radhakrishnan and Dipak Misra to make a fresh attempt to find an amicable resolution to the grievances of deaf and dumb employees. A PIL filed by ‘Deaf Employees Welfare Association’ had alleged that the government remained unmoved despite several representations by hearing impaired employees seeking enhancement of transport allowance to bring at par with that paid to blind and physically handicapped.

Now, get coaching for Kaun Banega Crorepati

A

s Indians, we’re well aware of the importance exams play during our school years, what with last minute cramming and taking additional coaching from private tutors. Now, a past winner of reality game show Kaun Banega Crorepati is taking this concept a step further by offering coaching for wannabe contestants, at no added cost. Anil Kumar Sinha, who won a crore on the show, has taken the initiative to help others get an entry to the hot seat round. “Many contestants are intelligent but lose their confidence due to nervousness in game shows. They are like a champagne bottle, once the cork is opened, the knowledge rushes forth. It took me 11 years to get an entry into the show, yet I didn’t lose patience, whereas others get discouraged and let it go,” says Sinha. He has written two books — one containing general knowledge questions and the other is a compilation of

interviews of other winners on KBC and their journey. Sinha got this idea of coaching aspirants when one of them contacted him to ask for tips. “Vineet from Coimbatore wanted to know how I made it and soon we got chatting on the phone. It wasn’t possible for us to meet in person, so when he asked if I could coach him daily for one hour over the phone, I agreed. I found the idea interesting and soon many others joined. I connect with people on Facebook and later guide them through emails. She had even informed the production house regarding her decision when Sushant Singh Rajput quit the show last year. However, things did not work at that point of time and she has now finally decided to quit the show. Ankita has put in her papers and will continue with the show for next three months (till February 2013). The story will

soon see a major turn where the show will take a seven months generation leap and Archana’s (Ankita Lokhande) daughter Ovi (Shruti Kanwar) will deliver a baby. We hear that Ankita has quit the show because it is taking a generation leap as she is not comfortable playing a grandmother. Archana who is currently playing a mother of four grownup kids is not happy with the new storyline. The show will also witness the entry of Shakti Arora who will enter as the new parallel lead and will be paired opposite Purvi ( Aasha Negi). When contacted, Ankita refutes the news saying, “I don’t want to comment anything on the news and if I decide to quit you will come to know.”

Alcohol for teenagers ‘never safe’ For those 15 to 17 they say "the safest option is to delay … drinking for as long as possible", and "if drinking does occur it should be at a low-risk level and in a safe environment". The study found the chances of developing an alcohol disorder among low-risk drinkers were closer to that of risky drinkers than to that of nondrinkers. Director of adolescent health research at the Royal Children's Hospital George Patton said he had expected that those with no evidence of excessive drinking patterns as teens would do well as adults. "But we found, particularly for males, that those who start drinking early had very high rates of alcohol abuse and

T

EENAGERS who drank only small amounts of alcohol had a significantly higher risk of abusing alcohol or engaging in risky sexual behaviour as young adults, research has found. The research casts doubt on new national guidelines that suggest there is a low-risk level of drinking for under-18s. It provides evidence for a move away from the harm-minimisation approach and raises questions about the apt legal minimum drinking age, experts say. A team from Melbourne's Murdoch Children's Research Institute says its study, which has tracked 1520 young people's drinking habits over more than 10 years from mid-teens to mid-20s, shows there is no safe or sensible level of drink-

ing for adolescents, in light of later likely events. National Health and Medical Research Council guidelines define a low-risk level of drinking for adults as fewer than three standard drinks a day. The research found teenagers, drinking at even this level, increased their chances of alcohol abuse, social or legal problems or alcohol-related high-risk sexual behaviour, 10 years down the track. "The issue of when teens start drinking is a very important question," lead researcher, epidemiologist Elya Moore, said. "Those who abstained from any alcohol in adolescence experienced fewer (bad) alcoholrelated outcomes than those who drank at the recommended level. "We found no evidence of a

dependence, even if they had started (by) drinking sensibly," Professor Patton said. "For some time, we have seen rising rates of alcohol abuse and binge drinking in the young adult and adolescent age range. "One view was to teach adolescents to drink sensibly: the harm-minimisation approach. In the 1990s, the health education messages going out were based on that idea. This paper is significant because it looks at that question," he said. Alcohol Education and Rehabilitation Foundation chairman Scott Wilson said the study suggested alcohol guidelines for under-18s should be made clearer: "Zero alcohol, full stop."

level that may have been safe," Dr Moore said. The research, published in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health, found that by young adulthood, 27 per cent of men and 13 per cent of women met at least one of the criteria for alcohol abuse and risky sexual behaviour. The research showed a clear trend: the more boys drank as teenagers, the more likely they were to develop alcohol-related problems as a young adult. The trend was not as clear for girls. Dr Moore said this could have been a failure of the research method, rather than evidence that girls were more able to drink at safe levels. Official guidelines state that the safest option is not to drink alcohol under 18.

Varanasi, the holy city of India, is also known by the name of Kashi and Benaras. Kashi, the city of Moksha for Hindus since centuries, is known for its fine-quality silks, ‘paan’ and Benares Hindu University and Avimukta of the ancient days, Varanasi is the most popular pilgrimage point for the Hindus. One of the seven holiest cities, Varanasi city is also one the Shakti Peethas and one of the twelve Jyotir Linga sites in India. In Hinduism it is believed that those who die and are cremated here get an instant gateway to liberation from the cycle of births and re-births.” Considered as the abode of Lord Shiva, Varanasi is situated on the banks of River Ganges, which is believed to have the power of washing away all of one’s sins. As pundits here will tell you, whatever is sacrificed and chanted here or given in charity reaps its fruits thousand times more than those good deeds performed at other places because of the power of that place. It is believed that three nights of fasting in Varanasi city can reap you rewards of many thousands of lifetimes of asceticism!

History

The land of Varanasi (Kashi) has been the ultimate pilgrimage spot for Hindus for ages. Often referred to as Benares, Varanasi is the oldest living city in the world. These few lines by Mark Twain say it all: “Benaras is older than history, older than tradition, older even than legend and looks twice as old as all of them put together”. Hindus believe that one who is graced to die on the land of Varanasi would attain salvation and freedom from the cycle of birth and re-birth. Abode of Lord Shiva and Parvati, the origins of Varanasi are yet unknown. Ganges in Varanasi is believed to have the power to wash away the sins of mortals.

Festivals of Varanasi

Varanasi is the most popular pilgrimage place for the Hindus. The rich cultural heritage and tradition of Varanasi makes it the cultural capital of India. For ages, Varanasi has been a center of learning of Indian philosophy, spiritualism, mysticism and other branches of education. Varanasi is essentially a melting pot of Indian culture. In Hindu religion, it is believed that one, who dies and is cremated at Varanasi, gets an instant gateway to liberation from the cycle of births and re-births. Being associated with Hindu traditions and religion, Varanasi is home to numerous temples, muths and Ashrams. By virtue of its religious and cultural importance, Varanasi is abuzz with fairs and festivals all round the year. Almost every month, some important festival is celebrated in Varanasi. Besides festivals and holidays, many “Melas” or fairs are also held at Varanasi. At Varanasi, fairs and festivals are celebrated

with traditional gaiety and fervor and are symbolic of celebration of life at its best. The festive atmosphere never seems to end in Varanasi. It’s not important to make itinerary according to the dates and months as one can come and enjoy the festive season of Varanasi anytime of the year!

Places to Visit in Varanasi

Being the oldest city of the world and an important Hindu pilgrimage center, Varanasii attracts a large number of people from all over the world. For centuries, Varanasi is famous for spiritualism, mysticism, Indian philosophy and Hinduism. All these are reflected in numerous sects, temples, Ashrams and Ghats. Varanasi is associated not only with Hinduism but also with Buddhism and Jainism. Besides numerous temples, Varanasi also boasts of Buddhist Stupas and Jain temples. Varanasi is also a mirror of the age-old Indian civilization. The archaeological museum at Sarnath houses numerous remains of the past, including the National emblem of India, the Ashoka pillar.

Varanasi Ghats

Varanasi or Kashi is older than traditions. Varanasi presents a unique combination of physical, metaphysical and supernatural elements. According to the Hindu mythology, Varanasi liberates soul from human body to the ultimate. It is the Ganga Ghats of Varanasi that complement the concept of divinity. Ghats of Ganga are perhaps the holiest spots of Varanasi. The Ganga Ghats at Varanasi are full of pilgrims who flock to the place to take a dip in the holy Ganges, which is believed to absolve one from all sins. There are number of temples on the bank of the Ganga river in

Varanasi. It is believed that people are cleansed physically, mentally and spiritually at Ganga Ghats. It is at the Ganga Ghats where we see life and death together. For thousands of years people have been thronging these Ghats to offer their morning prayers to the rising sun. There are more than 100 ghats along side Ganga in Varanasi. Some of the prominent and popular Ghats at Varanasi are the Dasaswamedh Ghat, Manikarnika Ghat, Harischandra Ghat, Kabir Ghat and Assi Ghat.

Shopping in Varanasi

Silk weaving is perhaps the most popular art of Varanasi and Banarasi silk sarees form an indispensable part of an Indian bride’s trousseau. The worldfamous gold and silver brocades and richly worked saris are known to have passed on from generations to generations much like family jewels without loosing their charm. Besides Banarasi saris and brocades, you may look for wonderful pieces of brassware, copperware, wooden and clay toys and antique designs of heavy gold jewellery in Varanasi.

Cuisine of Varanasi

There are numerous food outlets and a very dynamic range in quality. The restaurants closer to the ghats cater more to foreign tourists, with variable success. To get really authentic Banarasi Khana you’re going to have to get to the main market area or, better, to have a banarasi friend inviting you at home. Benares Dum Aloo is a local specialty, and the city is also known for its desserts. You can’t go away from Benares without eating local specialities as aloo chat and pani puri and, in general, the street food. Paan, a betel nut mixture usually containing tobacco, is not really food, but is something Benares is famous for all over India.

These guys are super talented and also completely crazy, which made the whole process so much fun.” And The Chainsmokers, “Working with Priyanka was such an incredible opportunity. Priyanka has such a sensual voice that really opens up which allowed us to create this big room vocal house sounds and still have a hard electro break.”

any filmmakers wish to work with Kareena Kapoor, but she has her eyes set on one director Zoya Akhtar, who has scripted the actress’ forthcoming film “Talaash”. “I am grateful to the directors who have cast me and that means a lot. (There are) Actors that I have worked with double times, so I consider myself lucky. But I personally love Zoya’s work. She is a wonderful filmmaker. I would love to work with Zoya,”

Kareena said in an interview. Earlier, reports indicated that Zoya was working on a script and intended to cast Kareena and her cousin, actor Ranbir Kapoor in the movie. However, to this, Kareena said: “She is wonderful. I hope things fall in place. I think Zoya is writing a script, (but) nothing is concrete right now.” Meanwhile, Kareena believes the “audience has become very sharp and they are liking different films.”

Why We Need To Remember God

W

hat is reality? Neither reasoning nor arguments can unravel the mystery of reality. Perhaps as human beings we are unable to grasp reality on account of our limited intellect and understanding. Anything determined by intellect is an intellectually concocted thing. That is not reality. Absolute reality cannot be manufactured

December 2012 Edition

by a conditioned soul suffering from limitations of birth, death and disease. Supreme reality always exists; it cannot be manufactured by mind. Krishna says mind is material; that it is apara parakriti, not para. Para prakriti is superior energy, while apara is not. Apara is composed of eight elements -- earth, water, air, space, heat, mind, intelligence, perverted ego. Because of being

the outcome of material energy of the Supreme, we have material mind. We are unable to know transcendental reality which is beyond comprehension. We need to find ways to see transcendental truth without having to manufacture it. Hence the need for darshan shastra. This means we don’t have to create God for God is already present. Absolute reality is existing eter-

nally and is self effulgent, the cause of all causes. When the Supreme Lord with self effulgence of transcendental knowledge is experienced, everything falls into perspective. Brahma is said to have performed penance of one hundred years and more and then the knowledge was revealed to him. Without the grace of the Supreme, we may get the apparent but not actual meaning. Externally, no one can know. The only way is to submit to spiritual channel. That is why my gurudeva Srila Bhakti Siddhant Saraswati Goswami Thakura said that I pay my obeisances to preceptorial channel. Transcendental knowledge descends. Who am I? What is ultimate reality? What is this world? What relation we have with world and the Supreme? All will be imparted. Any time one can get knowledge and immediately all problems will be solved. We have got misconception of our self. We are averse to the Supreme Lord, hence are suffering. The best way of getting grace is to chant the Supreme’s name. Krishna and Gita are not different. Name of God, Vedas and the Supreme are not different. Transcendental name and

form of the Supreme are not different. Chanting the names of God is something you can do anytime, anywhere. Suppose you wish to draw water from a deep well but the rope snaps and the bucket falls into the water. How to pull it back from the well? We will have to try all means – fling another rope with hook to snag the bucket in the hope that at least one of the attempts will be successful. Similarly when fall into the ‘well’ of the material world, the Supreme comes to us in the form of various avatars with different name in the hope of ‘hooking’ us to bail us out. Hence chanting the names of God is beneficial. One sure way of ensuring we keep remembering the names of God is to give those names to your children. Ajamil has named his younger son Narayan. At the time of death, the messengers came to take him to the land of death, out of sheer fear he called out the name of his son. Immediately Lord Narayana ensured that Yamaraj’s messenger did not take him away. We should have firm belief. If we have belief we will get everything; else we cannot get it. Have faith. This is darshan shastra.

LIKE ME, VIDYA HAS GUTS TO DO DIFFERENT FILMS: WAHEEDA REHMAN Always willing to take chances, Waheeda Rehman experimented with unconventional roles in films such as Guide and Teesri Kasam. She sees a reflection of herself in Vidya Balan, who has also shown great chutzpah in selecting her films. Asked who among the current lot was like her, the screen legend said: “I’ll say Vidya Balan.” “I also used to choose different movies. I never stuck to one good girl in love (kind of role) and Vidya does the same thing,” Waheeda said. “I had the guts to do Guide. At that time, they told me not to do it because it was a vamp’s role. I did Mujhe Jeene Do and Teesri Kasam. I wanted to take a chance and even Vidya is doing that now,” she said. The graceful 76-year-old thespian follows the same maxim even today. The reason why she has taken up nothing after Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s 2009 release Delhi 6: “The role should excite me. It must contribute to the movie... not just like standing there. That’s not exciting. What kind of role is difficult to say. Even if it is an elderly role, it must contribute. I don’t want to be there for the sake of being there,” Waheeda said. In a 56-year acting career, she gave all-time classics such as Kagaz Ke Phool, Guide, Chaudhvin Ka Chand, Teesri Kasam and Mujhe Jeene Do. With no prior experience in acting, she always focussed on her director’s brief. “Whatever acting I

did, it was with the help of my directors and my imagination. I used to do things to the best of my ability. I emphasised on my feelings and not so much on the technique,” she said. The big screen veteran has no plans to join TV. “I got so many offers, but I don’t want to do TV. I was told you get stuck badly if the serial becomes popular. Then the timings and all...I want to have my life at my time,” she said. “If I do one picture (at a time), it is fine... I want to enjoy my life. Currently, I’m enjoying myself. There are so many things to do, I run a house, meet my friends. I do a lot of reading, meditation and I travel,” she said. And she is doing that... meeting friends from the industry regularly for lunch or films. “Nanda, Asha Parekh, Sadhna, Helen...we meet quite often. We go out for lunches or visit each other’s house. We watch movies. Salim (writer Salim Khan) saab and Helen have screenings for all the movies they can get, and all of us watch them together,” she said. The actress has always been fond of her fans but believes that there is a line that should not be crossed. “Sometimes, it bugs you and irritates you. We go to a restaurant and we are eating. People don’t have the sensitivity that they should let us eat. Once we finish, they can ask for autograph or a photograph. Let us be. You are eating, so are we. We don’t want to be disturbed like that,” she said.

Deepika’s spokesperson said: “She has been approached to perform to ‘Angrezi beat’. However, Deepika still has to work out her dates.” “Angrezi beat”, sung by Yo yo Honey Singh, secured its place as a chartbuster, and is a popular number among the youth.

JTHJ mints Rs. 101 crore at Indian Box Office

Jab Tak Hai Jaan” (JTHJ), Yash Chopra’s last directorial venture, continues to mint money. The romantic saga has earned Rs.101.26 crore at the domestic box office in 11 days since its release. The movie, featuring Shah Rukh Khan, Anushka Sharma and Katrina Kaif, released on 2,500 screens on the auspicious occasion of Diwali, Nov 13.

December 2012 Edition

Made at a budget of Rs.50 crore, the film has surpassed the Rs.100 crore mark in the Indian market, even though it had crossed the milestone figure in terms of worldwide collections within six days of hitting the screens. Despite mixed reviews from all quarters, it had grossed over Rs.120 crore from all over the world in six days, and at the

Indian box office, the movie had managed to get Rs.80.73 crore. The figures only seem to be on a rise. The buzz for the film was immense, given the fact that it is Chopra’s last directorial, a project he took up eight years after helming “Veer-Zaara”. It has also brought back Shah Rukh in his classic romantic avatar, which his female fans love him for.

H

e has been delivering a series of blockbusters, especially in last couple of years, and one thing that Salman Khan is being conscious about is ensuring that each of his films caters to family audience. Though Dabangg did have a hint of some tongue in cheek humour (remember ‘Hum Tum Mein Itne Chhed Karenge.....’?), by and large he has stayed away bringing anything in his films that reeks of adult content. “Same is the case in Dabangg 2 as well”, says a prominent crew member, “Yes, there is some naughty humour that goes with Chulbul Pandey. However even that would be subtle and there won’t be anything vulgar about it. Thodi masti rahegi, thoda funny rahega but there won’t be any place for toilet humour.” In fact Salman as well as Arbaaz Khan was conscious about this fact due to which there was a slight alteration done in the

fter a commendable performance in Homi Adajania’s “Cocktail”, actress Deepika Padukone is said to be stormed with offers to dance on film’s hit song “Angrezi beat” at award functions. “Many organisers are in talk with Deepika as they want her to perform to the song. Some of

theatrical promo compared to the one (with Salman getting into his naughty self) which went online. “As a character Chulbul Pandey is intrinsically naughty and since the film is set in the UP-Bihar belt again, the core of the stage and setting has to remain intact. However that doesn’t mean that the Khan brothers are compromising on the ‘clean’ tag with which they wish to release Dabangg”, the crew member continues, “Neither is there any bad language nor any hint of skin show. Even the item song ‘Fevicol’ doesn’t have any vulgarity to it. You can’t expect that either with Kareena Kapoor in there.” With the most intimate moment between Salman Khan and Sonakshi Sinha also being restricted to a mere peck on the cheek, and that too rather symbolically, guess Dabangg 2 could well end 2012 on a ‘clean’ note.

apt if during the promotions of the film he got a chance to interact with crime journalists especially those who have done investigative journalism. Aamir has been a keen follower of crime and investigative journalism and he thinks that they do a very commendable job in the tough circumstances. Hence he would be meeting and interacting with various crime journalists during

his promotional spree in various cities of India. Talaash starring Aamir Khan, Rani Mukerji and Kareena Kapoor is a suspense thriller that explores Mumbai’s underbelly like never before. Directed by Reema Kagti and written by Zoya Akthar, the highly anticipated Bollywood film releases worldwide on the 30th of November.

bollywood music Music Review :

B

Khiladi 786

ollywood’s ‘khiladi’ Akshay Kumar is back in action to pack a punch with his new outing “Khiladi 786”. The film’s soundtrack has been composed by Himesh Reshammiya. It has seven original tracks and five remixes. First up on the playlist is “Lonely”, whose initial tune sounds similar to Alexandra Stan’s hit number “Mr.Saxobeat”. The song has rap by Yo Yo Honey and, on the Nighm has good whole, theSonu number

dancing beats. There are good vocal inputs by Himesh Reshammiya and Hamsika Iyer. The song is addictive, thanks to Himesh’s nasal touch as he croons “Oh bawariya” at regular intervals during the song. The track has a remixed version too, but that isn’t too great. “Balma” pays tribute to the music of the late R.D.Burman and features sounds from the past. However, it also takes some inspiration from

LMFAO’s track “Sexy and I know it”. It is full of energy and manages to charm the listener with its groovy beat and the seductive voice of Shreya Ghoshal who has good company in the vocals with Sreeram Chandra. Surely a track that can make you hit the dance floor. The remix though is quite ordinary and it is better to stick with the original. The next track “Long drive” starts off as a rock number

with the guitar but suddenly moves into desi beats. The sounds then fuse and it transforms into a hip-hop and rock mix. It’s a daring experiment by Himesh, who has got Mika behind the mike in a different avatar altogether. He is slow, yet his voice doesn’t dilute the track; instead, it allures you all the more towards it. It also has a fun Bhangra remixed version which features dhol and tumbi to make you sway.

Next up is the romantic number “Sari sari raat”, crooned by Himesh. It has a very dreamy and beautiful composition, and will surely strike a chord with lovebirds. It is followed by “Hookah bar”, which has the trio of Himesh Reshammiya, Vineet Singh and Aman Trikha sounding quite celebratory. However, despite some fine music, the song is unable to move the listener. It’s remixed version is passe. The title track gets the smiles back. However, it sounds like a new version of “Hud hud dabangg” with fresh lyrics. Despite the vocals by Vineet Singh, Aman Trikha, Yashraj Kapil, Alam Gir Khan and Rajdeep Chatterjee, the listener is unable to get out of the “Dabangg” mode. There is a racy remix of this one too, but it suffers because of the same trajectory. Last but not the least is “Tu hari peer”, which musically speaking has a lot to offer as Himesh combines qawwali and Punjabi folk to dole out an eclectic mix. Javed Ali, Shreya Ghoshal, Chandrakala Singh and Harshdeep Kaur mesmerise with their voices. Overall, the album is a mixed bag that has some shortcomings, but there are tracks which are capable of making it to the music charts.

Monash Media Release

More migrants than economic sense

T

he Gillard Government’s immigration policy is out of sync with the current economic climate, causing many Australians to compete with migrants in the struggle to find work, according to new research. In the most recent report compiled by Monash University’s Centre for Urban and Population Research (CPUR), researchers argue that Australia’s immigration intake is too high. Lead researcher and Head of the CPUR, Dr Bob Birrell, said the report shows that under the current employment conditions, several of

the major visa subclasses need to be culled. “Australia has been in the grip of a boom mentality over the last decade,” Dr Birrell said. “In such booms, government and business enterprises seem to lose the capacity to put claims of economic growth to a reality test – claims such as those from the Australian Workforce and Productivity Agency, which say demand for workers will increase.” Immigration policy settings have been adjusted to accommodate this boom mentality, with the permanent migration program for 2012-13 set

at a record high figure of 210,000. The Government’s 457 temporaryentry visa program is also running at record high levels. “The immigration program is set on full throttle, whereas the net growth of the employed workforce in Australia has slowed to a crawl,” Dr Birrell said. “The net growth in the employed workforce in Australia was just 58,000 between the 2011 and 2012 August quarters. Yet, in the past year, at least 100,000 migrants who arrived found employment in Australia.” The report shows that due to the

current immigration policies, domestic job aspirants are being crowded out, particularly young people seeking to enter the workforce. Australian-born youth unemployment has increased and, as of August 2012, there were 666,830 unemployment benefit recipients, up from 626,969 in August 2012. “The most serious implication of migration for domestic workers is the huge presence of migrants on temporary visas in metropolitan lower-skilled labour markets,” Dr Birrell said. “Though allegedly here for various educational, holiday and cul-

tural exchange purposes, large numbers are primarily in Australia to work.” The research found the current rules regulating temporary entry are excessively generous. Once in Australia, tens of thousands of migrants then extend their presence in the labour market by moving from visa to visa. “There is an urgent need for a review of the temporary-entry visa subclasses, which examines the impact on young domestic workers of the flood of migrants competing with them for available jobs,” Dr Birrell said.

2012: is it really thee

END OF THE WORLD?

W

ith end of the Maya’s “long count” calendar set for Dec. 21, there have been predictions about the world coming to an end. Will you be having an End of the World Party on Dec. 21 or do you still expect to be around the next day? There are reportedly many parties planned for Dec. 20 or 21 this year, just in case. With the “long count” calendar of the Ancient Mayans coming to an end that day, some people are a little pessimistic about any calendar continuing past that date. Experts on the matter, however, say we’ve got

nothing to worry about. “Experts estimate the system starts counting at 3114 B.C., and will have run through 13 baktuns, or 5,125 years, around Dec. 21. Experts say 13 was a significant number for the Maya, and the end of that cycle would be a milestone — but not an end.” Some people believe the Maya may have predicted “impending astronomical disasters that would coincide with 2012, ranging from explosive storms on the surface of the sun that could knock out power grids to a galactic alignment that could trigger a reversal in

Earth’s magnetic field.” But according to the article published, that is not the case. In fact Mayan predictions go way past our present-day, indicating that they expected a future to come even after their long count calendar came to an end. There have been several predictions of the end of the world, including the May 21, 2011 biblical prediction by then 89-year-old old “minister” Howard Camping. On May 22, however, the sun rose just as surely as it had the day before.

In a candid interview, Butler opened up about his affection for Priyanka. He said: “Last year, Priyanka was here (US) and I was going out of town to a wedding. But we are in touch all the time,” he said. hen Akshay Kumar had signed Khiladi 786, he had predicted that the film’s music would be huge and catch fancy of the masses. The continued success, right from ‘Balma’ and ‘Lonely’ to ‘Hukka Bar’ and now ‘Long Drive’ has shown that. No wonder, both Akshay and Himesh are a happy lot. To celebrate this success, a mashup of all the songs is being released and that too 15 days before the film’s release. Says a source, “This is the first time when a mash up of all songs is being released by the makers and the music company on the request of fans worldwide before the release of the film. Himesh is super excited to create this mashup which has been mixed by Kiran Kamath and is on top of the world with quite a few chartbuster albums in a row, most recent being Son Of Sardaar.” “If fans were asking for it, we thought why not? Why should we wait for the release of the film since the music is a hit already,” adds another source close to the makers. Credits of the ‘Khiladi Mashup’ will include music by Himesh Reshammiya, mixed by Kiran Kamath, and sung by Himesh, Shreya Ghoshal, Honey Singh and Band of Power.

alaash actress Rani Mukerji rules out requesting her director to swap roles. he actress states that she has no qualms playing a de-glam lowkey role opposite a glamourous co-star like Kareena Kapoor. The actress rules out wanting to take up Bebo’s role, preferring to play the role the director has envisioned for her. The actress states, “I’m a bit egoistic about my work. When a director comes to me with a part, I want to play only that particular role. The question of me wanting to play another character would arise only if the director tells me to choose between two roles. But when Reema (Kagti, director)

came to me, she had this particular role for me etched in her mind.” Rani and Kareena have done a film together after more than a decade but didn’t share a single frame. But that doesn’t deter Rani from speaking fondly about her co-star. Kareena and I have mutual love and understanding for each other. We had a lot of fun while shooting Mujhse Dosti Karoge and even after that, whenever we have met at social dos or parties there has always been a lot of love and warmth. In fact, when I was told that Kareena would be a part of the film, I was looking forward to working with her. Unfortunately, there was no such possibility for us in the script to meet.

f there is someone that superstar Shah Rukh Khan is scared of, it is his 12-yearold daughter Suhana. The actor says he often bows down to the whims and fancies of his little angel. “I never feel bad about any scolding that I get from kids. Even my kids at home keep scolding me. I feel bad when I break rules in India and my elders scold me. But at home, if I stay up really

late at night or do a couple of things which irritates them, my daughter Suhana scolds me a lot and quite loudly at that,” Shah Rukh said on “India’s Prime Icon”. Shane Watson ready to push himself in Perth

S

hane Watson has bowled 71 first-class overs in the past year. Peter Siddle delivered nearly that many in the Adelaide Test alone. Watson has bowled with the red ball in only one match this summer - the Sheffield Shield game in which he broke down after four overs. Since the start of last season, he has sent down fewer first-class deliveries than Simon Katich. And yet Australia will rely heavily on Watson to ease the workload of the frontline fast men when the Perth Test starts on Friday.

It is easy to forget how little longform cricket Watson has played in recent times. His presence around the squad, and his omnipresence in Twenty20s and one-dayers around the world never keep him away from a headline or a highlights package. But the decider against South Africa at the WACA will be Watson’s first Test on home soil since the disastrous 2010-11 Ashes campaign. How his body will cope remains to be seen, but he is confident that his most recent calf injury is behind him.

Saturday, 15 December 2012

V HOBArT HUrrICAnES MCG Friday, 21 December 2012

V SydnEy SIxErS MCG

“Over the last week I’ve been gradually building up my running and my bowling,” Watson said in Perth on Wednesday. “I bowled six overs in the nets yesterday before we left in Adelaide so I’m certainly going to be up to bowling as many overs as Michael [Clarke] wants and probably the normal sort of workload really that I bowl in a Test match. Things have progressed really well over the past week so I’m ready to go.” He needs to be. The heavy burden shouldered by Siddle and Ben Hilfenhaus in Adelaide,

where the loss of James Pattinson early in the match left Australia one bowler short, will make Clarke reluctant to ask too much of them, given the short break between games. Put simply, it is unlikely the Australians will have the luxury of easing Watson back in with one or two overs here or there, and despite his serious lack of red-ball bowling over the past year, he believes he is up to it. “I understand that could be a possibility and at the moment that’s the biggest challenge for Ben and Peter for their mammoth effort in second innings to be able to freshen up as quick as they can,” he said. “I do understand there will be a possibility of me bowling as many overs as I need to, to be able to help the team hopefully win. But in the end my body is on the condition to be able to do it, so I’m certainly fresh over the past couple of weeks compared to some of the other guys that have been out there.” Fresh is one way of putting it. But the line between being fresh and underdone can be a thin one. That’s something Watson has come to learn the hard way over the course of his career. Rushing back too soon from injury has cost Watson in the past, and he has had more time than most players to ponder the best balance for his game. Typically, bowling has caused or exacerbated his many injuries, even though his batting at

the top of the order is his primary role within Australia’s Test side. The Adelaide Test marked an unwanted milestone for Watson: it was the 50th Test he had missed since his debut in 2005. Although he might have been left out of some of the early matches for reasons of form or team balance, the vast majority of his absences have been due to injury, and the numbers are staggering when compared with his batting teammate Michael Hussey, who also debuted in 2005 and has played 75 Tests without missing one. But despite the frequency with which he has been sidelined, Watson remains unwilling to consider himself a specialist batsman. In his own mind, he remains an allrounder, and it would take a drastic course of events for him to change his thinking - more drastic, that is, than missing more Tests than he plays. “Not unless something goes very horribly wrong, I wouldn’t want to give up on bowling,” he said. “One part I love of the game - I know it puts more pressure on my body to be able to play consistently but it’s something I just love so much and have loved doing since I was an allrounder since I was a young kid. The ultimate enjoyment for me is to play as an allrounder. Mentally the injury setbacks are frustrating at times, but it doesn’t take away the love of being able to contribute with bat and ball.”

ith constant speculation about his retirement following the recent poor show, batting legend Sachin Tendulkar has given an indication that he may finally be ready to call it a day. He had a discussion with chief selector Sandeep Patil on Tuesday. “They had a frank discussion, and Tendulkar told Patil that since he is not getting runs, he would like to leave it to the selectors to take a call (on his retirement),” told a cricket board insider. This comes in the wake of the crushing defeat India suffered against England in Mumbai. Tendulkar fell to left-arm spinner Monty Panesar in both innings, scoring only eight runs each time. In the first Test in Ahmedabad, he got out for 13. Though the national selectors made only one change in the squad for the Kolkata Test — replacing Umesh Yadav with Ashok Dinda — most cricket debates remain focused on Tendulkar’s retirement. The batsman, eight short of becoming the first cricketer to play 200 Tests, has not scored a century since the Cape Town match against South Africa in January 2011. Since then, he has gone 15 Tests, and 28 innings, without reaching triple figures. The little master, who will turn

40 on April 24 next year, also had a forgettable home series against New Zealand recently. Though India won 2-0, he was bowled in all three innings, with critics raising concerns about whether his legendary batting skills were waning. Patil’s talk with Tendulkar also puts on notice other players who have not performed consistently. Though the selectors were supposed to announce the 15-member squad on Tuesday for the last two Tests as well as the two Twenty20 internationals, they named the side only for the Kolkata Test, leaving room for more changes. Meanwhile, MS Dhoni faces another dilemma ahead of the Test at Eden Gardens. The Mumbai rout notwithstanding, MS Dhoni has again asked for a track that turns from Day One. Whether he really meant it or the thought of possible embarrassment over changing his stand on the ideal Test wicket forced it out of him is something only he would know. The bigger question is, whether his demand would be conveyed to Kolkata, the venue for the third Test, as forcefully as it was to Mumbai. And will Kolkata be as accommodating as Mumbai to such a request? While those concerned are tightlipped on the issue, Dhoni

Batting legend Sachin Tendulkar has given an indication that he may finally be ready to call it a day. The little master has played 25 innings since his last century, scoring 885 runs at an average of 35.36, though his 2012 record worsens. He has played 12 innings this year for a return of 274 runs and an average of 22.83.

wanting a Mumbai-like wicket in Kolkata has left many stumped. “The pitch will be different from Mumbai. But a rank turner is also possible if asked for. However, it beats me why Dhoni is still asking for a turner,” said former national selector Sambaran Banerjee, who has observed the Eden pitch for over 30 years. What would make the powersthat-be think twice before making drastic changes to the wicket

is India’s record at this venue they have been unbeaten here over the last decade, winning five and drawing two Tests. And as a cherry on the cake, the last two Tests finished in massive victories for the hosts. So why fix what ain’t broken? The Eden wicket has traditionally been quite close to the typical Indian wicket, on which the hosts have vanquished their strongest opponents. The wicket helps

pacers initially and then the spinners start asserting themselves from Day Three onwards. While Harbhajan Singh has been the most successful spinner here with 46 scalps from seven Tests, Javagal Srinath got his career-best of 8-86 against Pakistan here in 1999. And nine of the 20 wickets were taken by Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav in the last Test win over the West Indies.

ebastian Vettel became the youngest triple champion in Formula One history on Sunday when he finished sixth behind the victorious Jenson Button in a tumultuous Brazilian Grand Prix. The 25-year-old German, who was involved in an opening lap collision, made light of the damage to his Red Bull car as he fought through the field in a dramatic race run in treacherous rain-swept conditions at the Interlagos circuit. Vettel’s only title rival, twotime champion Spaniard Fernnando Alonso, finished a fine second after a courageous drive for Ferrari, but it was not enough to overhaul a pre-race 13-points deficit as his German rival won the crown by just three points. The race was littered with accidents and incidents and ended behind a Safety Car with Vettel bringing his car home in the rain in tears, unable to respond to the screamed congratulations from Red Bull team chief Christian Horner. Vettel became only the third driver in Formula One history to win three successive titles, equalling the feats of the great Argentine Juan Manuel Fan-

gio and his own childhood idol Michael Schumacher, who finished seventh for Mercedes in his final race before retiring. Alonso’s Ferrari team-mate, local hero Brazilian Felipe Massa, drove brilliantly to finish third ahead of Australian Mark Webber in the second Red Bull and German Nico Hulkenberg of Force India. Hulkenberg played a prominent role in the race, not only leading for a spell but also crashing into Lewis Hamilton’s McLaren to wreck the Briton’s hopes of a triumphant conclusion to his career with the British team just when he looked sure of winning. Vettel was sixth, Schumacher seventh in his last race before retirement and Frenchman Jean-Eric Vergne eighth for Toro Rosso ahead of Japanese Kamui Kobayashi of Sauber and Finn Kimi Raikkonen of Lotus. Vettel, whose Red Bull team took a third constructors’ championship in succession last weekend in Texas, finished with 281 points and Alonso with 278. It was Briton Button’s first win in Brazil, his third of the season and the 15th of his career.

yurvedic Medicine for infertility is based on a different approach. According Ayurvedic system, the reproductive tissue or shukra dhatu either in men or female is an end product of metabolic processes. Sukra Dhatu (tissue) is present in both men and women. In women, it denotes ovum, which is a part of menstrual cycle. While in men, it comes out as semen after being sexually stimulated. Finally, healthy Ovum in female and healthy sperm in males is completely depends on healthy metabolic processes involved. How can one should have healthy metabolic process is depends on Agni (Dhathwagni). It plays crucial role in coordinating and conducting “Rasa” between the all the seven tissues (Sapta dhatus: nutrient fluid to blood, muscle, fat, bone, bone marrow and finally to the shukra tissue) to form and healthy end product which is “Sukra”. There are many factors which influence the fertility, which include wide range of general health and lifestyle issues. Factors such as Smoking, excess caffeine intake, excess consumption of alcohol and drugs, other medical reasons

such as previous cancer treatment, obesity, celiac syndrome (whether it is diagnosed or undiagnosed) and finally age related decline in natural fertility. According to Ayurvedic medicine, if we look for the underlying root cause

among all the above mentioned reasons, there is improper co ordination of “Rasa” due to sluggish metabolism, which influences the healthy production of “Sukra” (Healthy semen or Ovum). For example, it is predicted by many modern

world researchers, excess caffeine intake will cause either tubal block or mild to severe endometriosis. In case of Obesity, it is also predicted that excess adipose tissue will cause the production of excess oestrogen as a metabolic end

product of Insulin resistance. For most of the above mentioned reasons the root cause remains the same. As per the Ayurvedic medicine, it always very important to evaluate the root cause before treating the problem. The line of treatment in Ayurvedic medicine starts with the treatment of root cause, which is cleaning the part (Systemic location of DOSHA) of vitiated or imbalanced DOSHA. Low cholesterol can be bad as well Though we all know that high cholesterol is badfor health, on the other hand, very low cholesterol is also associated with health problems. Vitamin D deficiency in teens a serious problem “Does your teenage daughter often complain of backache and joint pain? Is your college-going cousin always lethargic? Vitamin D deficiency among youngsters, which causes such problems, is becoming common these days and is a growing health concern, doctors say?”

ikas Ahluwalia, senior consultant of Internal Medicine at Max Super Specialty hospital, said that vitamin D deficiency among young people has increased over the last couple of years, especially in metros like Delhi. “We have observed a rising number of cases of young people coming with complaints like backache, leg pain, joint pain and lethargy, which relate to vitamin D and vitamin D3 deficiency. It’s a cause of concern,” Ahluwalia said. The trend is mostly seen in metros, like Delhi, he added. “What is even more worrying is that children as young as 16, who are in the growing stage of their life, are coming with such problems,” Ahluwalia said. Paediatrician Anju Virmani of the Indraprastha Apollo hospital agreed. “Vitamin D deficiency is becoming very common these

ngrown hair not only prove to be an ugly sight but can also get painful. It is embarrassing to have a whole load of ingrowths on hands and legs and they also prevent you from flaunting your otherwise beautifully toned limbs. Ingrown hair or ingrowths look like tiny bumps on the skin. They occur when hair grows within the hair follicle instead of outside the follicle. Consultant dermatologist Dr Kshama Vibhakar says these bumps can also get infected leading to folliculitis. Folliculitis occurs because of blockage of the hair follicle. Boils or pimples might form in the hair follicle which then itch and could salso lead to pus formation. Ingrown hair often occur because of improper methods of hair removal. “Not waxing or shaving properly are the most common reasons for ingrown hair,” quips Vibhakar. “When skin is not completely stretched and hair is removed or pulled out, only a part of the hair is removed. The rest of the hair recoils and grows inside the hair follicle. This leads to ingrowths, clogged pores and eventually folliculitis.” Vibhakar advises to wax hair only when your hair have grown properly and completely. “Hair

days, and it’s affecting different sets of population. Among kids too it is becoming common,” Virmani said. “Scientific studies show that vitamin D deficiency is increasing in each decade. So the deficiency in the population between 2000 and 2010 was more than the previous decade. And the urban population is more affected than its rural counterpart,” she added. The root cause of the problem is lifestyle-related, doctors say. “It starts right at the beginning - when a woman is pregnant. If she is low on vitamin D, so will the child be. If there is not enough breastfeeding, the child will have this and all sorts of other problems when he or she grows older,” Virmani said. Young office goers, in their twenties and early thirties, who mostly have desk jobs and work in air-conditioned offices, also come with similar complaints. “I remember one patient who

came to us with a fracture. She was married for just six months and we were concerned if it had to do with domestic abuse. But after two days, her other leg too had a fracture, removing our doubts, because it meant that her bones were very brittle because of vitamin D deficiency,” she added. Exposure to sunlight is the biggest source of vitamin D something that we consciously avoid under various pretexts. “We are a nation obsessed with fair skin although we are naturally blessed with more melanin which is meant to protect, unlike our Western counterparts who also have higher incidence of skin cancer. So people here put lots and lots of sunscreen and sit behind tinted glasses that blocks UV rays. This is not always healthy,” said Ashu Agarwal, consultant in internal medicine at a private hospital in Delhi. Pollution too blocks the sun’s

rays, she added. “Children these days hardly play outside. They are running from school to tuitions and then when they play, it’s mostly video games in their rooms. So there is not enough exposure to sunlight,” Ahluwalia said. “Also, the common trend in all the kids with vitamin D deficiency is that they don’t take milk or milk products. So where do you get your calcium? Fast food has added to the problem. The normal range of vitamin D is 30 (nanogrammes per millilitre of blood) and at times we get children with 3-4; so that’s

how severe the problem can get,” he added. Virmani advises parents not to encourage their children, especially their young daughters who are more conscious about their weight, to have low fat milk. “It hardly does any good and doesn’t slim you down,” Virmani said. “The good thing is that tests for vitamin D are easily available and more reliable nowadays, so you can keep a check on it by maintaining a healthy lifestyle and ensure that your children do too. Ultimately your health is in your hands,” Agarwal said.

Get rid of ingrown hairs! cannot be pulled off completely if the growth is very small. Hence do not wax hair when you don’t have a full growth,” she says. Instruct the waxing technician to stretch the skin and wax properly. If shaving is your preferred method of hair removal, then remember to shave in the direction of the hair growth instead of against it. Also shave hair when they are wet because wet hair equals to soft hair. Ensure to wet hair for at least five minutes before shaving it. Clean the area of the ingrowth with a little hydrogen peroxide and then gently remove the ingrowth with a pair of a sterile tweezers. But remember to pluck it out in the direction of the hair growth. It helps to bathe with warm water before opting for any technique of hair removal. As hair can be easily removed from the root, when the pores open up. Exfoliate your skin to reduce the occurrence of ingrowths. Because your pores have become clogged, it is extremely important that you scrub your skin with an appropriate exfoliator. Always use warm water before you start exfoliating the skin as it opens up the pores on

the skin thus helping in removing dirt and grime. Regular exfoliation will make the ingrown hair grow out of the hair follicle.

You can use exfoliators available in the stores or make your own at home. Salt mixed with olive oil is an effective exfolia-

tor or you could opt for sugar instead of salt. Wear loose clothes after shaving or waxing.

Wild sex past can turn deadly later in life

he sexual revolution of the 1960s and 1970s could be behind a spike in cases of cancer of the tonsils and

tongue, a specialist from Brisbane has said. Head and neck specialists, radiologists and other clinical experts

came together at a recent health conference at Brisbane’s Princess Alexandra Hospital to discuss the rise in those caused by the human

papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Director of the Head and Neck Department at Princess Alexandra Hospital and president of the

Australia and New Zealand Head and Neck Cancer Society, Associate Professor Ben Panizza said that the current spike in cases could be a direct result of the sexual revolution of the sixties and seventies. “Oropharyngeal cancer, which is cancer of the tonsils and tongue, is on the rise. Ten years ago we were seeing around one patient every fortnight,” the Courier Mail quoted him as saying. “Now we encounter about two cases a week,” he said. The cancer is divided into two types - caused by the human papillomavirus infection and those caused by heavy drinking and smoking. “Previously most cases we saw were caused by the latter, and since it typically takes years of alcohol and tobacco abuse to cause this type of cancer, patients were generally elderly,” Prof Panizza said. “Now we are seeing younger patients, around middle age, who are developing cancer following infection with the human papillomavirus, which many people usually associate only with cervical cancer,” he said. According to Prof Panizza, the virus had a long lag phase, so it is often decades between exposure to the virus and the appearance of symptoms. “As a result, it is highly likely that the current increase in cases is directly linked to changes in sexual behaviour seen in the sixties and seventies,” he added.

ension Tamer, a simple and brief technique to reduce stress, can help improve sleep quality and decrease fatigue, say researchers. Researchers from Walter Reed National Military Medical Centre, Bethesda, Maryland, attempted to determine the effect of stress reduction technique, the 10-minute Tension Tamer, on improvement of stress levels and sleep parameters in 334 patients in a heart health programme. After a 30-minute introductory workshop, subjects were given instruction and guided opportunities to practice 10-minute Tension Tamers over the course of four 30-minute

visits with a stress management specialist, according to a Walter Reed statement. This brief technique, encouraged at bedtime, involves deep breathing and imagery using the subject’s personal preference. Of the patients, 65 percent improved their perceived stress by 6.6 points; while those not improving showed worsened stress levels by 4.6 points. Improvers also reported better sleep quality, decreased sleep latency, and decreased fatigue. These findings were presented during CHEST 2012, the annual meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians, held in Atlanta, Georgia.
