Air India may face fresh trouble over salaries

A

ir India may be headed for a fresh round of staff trouble. Constant delay in salary payment and the uncertainty surrounding pay cut following the implementation of Dharamadhikari committee report has forced the pilots of

erstwhile Indian Airlines to call an emergency meeting of their union on Monday. Their union, Indian Commercial Pilots’ Association (ICPA), is going to discuss the payment of just about Rs 7,000-10,000 this month as only basic pay was

given in March and not the flying allowances that account for over 80% of the total pay. “The morale of the airline staff has never been lower than it currently is. People are fed up with the never-ending financial troubles and the uncertainty over salary pay-

ment,” said an ICPA member. The ICPA is likely to authorize its office bearers to take any action they deem fit over the proposed pay cuts that implementing the Dharmadhikari committee report will lead to and the unending uncertainty

over getting paid. “Our calculations show us that the pay cut for co-pilots will be up to 26% and for senior commanders, especially from Air India side, the cut will be almost 46% to 48%. This is not acceptable,” said a member.

Mumbai: Civic gardens and parks to stay open till 11pm, have CCTVs soon

T

he next time you take your child to the public park in your locality, you will not get hustled out by park attendants by the time it gets dark. In a move to make the city’s open spaces safer, more convenient and more accessible, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to install closed circuit television cameras, build toilets and extend

the timings. Accordingly, the civic administration will be sending directions to all wards to collate a list of public open spaces where the programme can be put in place. Aseem Gupta, additional municipal commissioner, said, “We need to provide more facilities to people who visit the open spaces.

“We are looking at getting private parties to build toilets and recover the cost by operating them. We also plan to install CCTVs in our open spaces so that there is a sense of security.” Currently, most BMC-run open spaces shut between 7pm and 9pm — a process that is sometimes arbitrary, depending on the inclination of the local staff.

The BMC has now decided to extend the timings to 11pm. “Most people in the city don’t reach home before 9pm, so we are looking at extending the timings of our gardens. “We will start off with a few plots and see whether it is practical from the security point of view and then decide whether to extend it to the other gardens as well,” Gupta said.

Activist Nikhil Desai, resident of F-north ward, which has many BMC-run open spaces, objects to the plan to build toilets. “Going by their dismal record in maintaining toilets, I dread the thought of having to deal with such stench in our open spaces. But, extending the timings is a welcome move, provided the BMC appoints security guards.”

Survive during a bushfire

M

ost people living in bushfires areas know they are at risk but think it will happen to someone else. Many think about preparing but never get around to it. Bushfires impact

people every year and there is a good chance it could be you. Be prepared and have a plan, your survival depends on it. During a bushfire the safest place to be is away from the fire.

Being involved in a fire may be one of the most traumatic experiences of your life. You and your family’s survival and safety depend on the decisions you make now and how you act. Put your safety first - do not wait and see. Any decision you make should be based on survival, homes can be rebuilt. If a fire starts, leaving hours before a fire can reach you will always be the safest option for you, your family or household. Only stay and defend your home if it is well prepared and constructed, and you are capable of actively defending it. Prepare for the emotional, mental and physical impact

of actively defending your property. If you have any doubts about defending your home, you should leave. Act decisively the moment you know there is danger. Whether you choose to leave for a safer place or shelter in a well prepared and defendable home, preparation is the key for survival. During a bushfire, emergency services will provide as much information to you as possible through a number of different channels. There are three levels of warning and an All Clear. These change to reflect the increasing risk to your life and the decreasing amount of time you have until the fire arrives.

Governor’s office sends Dutt pardon plea to home department

A fire has started but there is no immediate danger, this is general information to keep you informed and up to date with developments. A fire is approaching and conditions are changing, you need to leave or prepare to actively defend to protect you and your family. You are in danger and you need to take immediate action to survive as you will be impacted by fire. This message may start with a siren sound called the Standard Emergency Warning Signal (SEWS). The danger has passed and the fire is under control, but you need to remain vigilant in case the situation changes. It may still not be safe to return home.

overnor K Sankaranarayanan has forwarded a petition to pardon actor Sanjay Dutt to the Maharashtra home department. The actor was sentenced to five years in prison by the Supreme Court in a case linked to the 1993 serial blasts in Mumbai. The governor’s office also received at least 20 letters and emails from citizens, opposing the move to pardon Dutt. “All the 20 letters and emails have opposed any sort of mercy being shown to the actor,” said an official. According to the governor’s office, the petition was forwarded to the home department on March 28, soon after MP Jaya Prada and former Samajwadi Party leader

Amar Singh met and forwarded the petition. The duo said Dutt had suffered long enough and has been a victim of a media trial. Another petition has been filed by Justice Markandey Katju, chairman of the Press Council of India, who first made an appeal to the governor. citing Article 161 of the Constitution gave him the right to pardon a convict. The governor’s office has so far not given any clarification on the status of that petition. A home department official said they are still looking into the petition and would only take it up if any directives are received from the higher-ups.

Everyday - the Road Accidents

istorically road accidents had a simultaneous growth with construction and expansion of road network and increase in vehicular traffic. During the last one century there has been a remarkable improvement in the designing, construction and maintenance of roads including freeways, intercity or the approach roads within the city including construction of tunnels, fly overs and in signalling of traffic. Simultaneously the number and type of vehicles as also the number of road users has multiplied many a time resulting in enormous increase in road accidents many of them proving to be fatal for the drivers and the other road users. Several agencies conducting studies on cause and effect of the road accidents have concluded that a large number of road accidents are not ACCIDENTAL but are known to have happened as a result of faulty driving skills, disobedience of traffic rules, and unworthiness of the motor vehicle, defective road conditions and inadequate signalling equipment. In the light of these observations, a well-coordinated and sustained effort on behalf of the state government department of road construction and maintenance, traffic police department, department of vehicular registration and licencing as also department of education is needed. Victorian government has made substantial headway in studying the phenomenon of road accidents and adopted both an educational and

punitive approach in controlling the number of road accidents. In the progressively designed approach some of the following factors need to be given more and more emphasis. 1. Physical and Mental Fitness of the Drivers Drivers role being crucial, his age, physical and mental fitness should be checked not only at the time of issuing the driving licence but more often because there number is ever increasing and it should not be taken for granted that the driver has retained his normal eye sight and hearing ability or the mental balance without it being disturbed by use of alcohol, drugs or distraction. In fact the drivers should be made to feel their own responsibility in controlling the mishaps to protect their own lives as also other innocent people. 2. Adequacy of Needed Acquired Knowledge and Skills Levels of literacy have no doubt improved but a large number of drivers since belonging to different countries and regions do not speak and read the same language. Imparting of detailed knowledge and acquiring of needed skills in driving and at times communicating with people on the road or other drivers being important, efforts should be made so that the fundamentals of road safety are imbibed in the English language. Regional languages seem to leave a scope of misinterpretation at times. 3. Fitness Check-up of the Vehicle and Operational Familiarity The types of vehicles, their models with increased addition of elec-

trical and mechanical gadgets are making the physical and operational check-up somewhat complicated. The drivers are therefore required to check up their use and ensure if the vehicle is driven on petrol, diesel or LPG. A news item telecast during March, 2013 revealed that one of the vehicles under use by the USA President had once stopped because of wrong fuel use .The adequacy of the fuel should also be ensured before the commencement of the journey. A timely look at the air pressure in tyres as also the fitness of the spare wheel can also be useful to avoid accidents. Checking up the lights, dippers, indicators, brakes, rear view mirrors, the front and the rear screens and the seat

belts may also be advantageous. In certain cases advance familiarity of the road route has also been a factor in reducing the accidents. Drivers are further required to be vigilant over the prohibited use of mobile telephones, over speeding and other sources of distraction and elements of personal fatigue during the course of long journeys. 4. Educating the Masses In todays world of scientific advancement an “ACCIDENT” at best can be considered as an human error caused under” FAULTY” circumstances .All efforts to minimise the road accidents or the death of the passengers/ road users have therefore to be sincere and comprehensive in educating the large number

of drivers including the” LEARNERS OR THE PROBATIONERS” and the people at large. In these efforts the staff of the state governments, local bodies, the manufacturers and service agencies of the automobile industry will also have to be included. Contribution of each category is important but it is the drivers of the vehicles who have a maximum responsibility in reducing the number of road accidents .By way of quality training their confidence and skill will have to be enriched. They would need to be vigilant at all times as otherwise the accidents will happen at ANY TIME at ANY PLACE and with ANY BODY causing huge damage to property and human lives.

8 DAV schools ban skirts in Jharkhand

A

mid growing concerns over the rise in crime against women in the city, DAV Group of Schools perhaps thought changing the dress code of girls would be the best possible solution to the problem. So they decided to replace shorts skirts and tunics with salwar kameez for female students from Class VIII upwards from this academic session. Several schools have been

battling with rising hemlines for sometime now. The DAV Group in the city, which felt that girls clad in tunics or short skirts unwittingly welcome unwanted attention, decided to do some moral policing by bringing about a complete change in school uniform from this year. LR Saini, director of DAV Group of Schools said, “We’ve taken this step to make children aware of our culture and tradition. Female students from Class VIII

onwards will now be required to wear only salwar-kameez with a bandi (jacket). We’ve done this to ensure girls dress decently to school and follow a discipline.” The move initiated in eight schools of DAV in the city aims to keep the sobriety of girls intact. “During adolescence, girls keep growing so we felt the need to initiate the step, which has been welcomed by both girls and parents,” he added.

Different DAV schools in the city were faced with the problem of students dressing inappropriately to school. This was increasingly being viewed as distracting pupils of the younger generation. “The step has been taken as a precautionary measure to combat the increase in crime against women in the city,” said SK Singh, vice-principal of DAV School Bariatu.” Echoing similar sentiments, SR Modgil, principal of DAV School Hehal, said the move was taken in view of the fact that girls look sober in salwar- kameez. This will also prevent them from exposing themselves. Big girls wearing skirts do not look sober at all. The step has been taken to ensure they look decent and sober, he added. This apart, several schools defended their ban on skirts in the wake of incidents where girls are seen rolling up their skirts at the waist in order to show more leg. AK Singh, vice-principal of Jawahar Vidya Mandir, Doranda said, “At the time of leaving their homes, the length of the skirts appear just fine. No sooner do they reach school, than the hemlines rise. The girls manage to transform their sober uniform into miniskirts by the time they reach school and that looks vulgar. You can’t call it a ban on skirts; we too have decided to change the uniform for girls in our school from the next session. It will only apply

to the older students who are in Class VIII and senior classes.” Defending the move, he added that the intentions of the girl clad in tunics or skirts may be fine, but the case may not be the same with people who look at them. There’s no harm in covering yourself from head to toe, he added. A section of parents have hailed the move. They said the change in uniform was a welcome move and should have been done before. “I understand that it’s the uniform, but the move is a step in the right direction. It should have been done before by the school administration. But better late than ever,” said Suhashi Verma. Social activist Poonam Anand, was, however, critical of the move. She said, “Though some city schools have made such a move, one can’t deny the fact that it is tantamount to curbing the freedom of girls. This means that girls have to dress in a manner that is deemed fit by others, her own choices are being throttled. This is a reflection of how men still want to show that they are superior to women. A person can look vulgar even in a salwarkameez.” Ankita, a student, protested, “The change in uniform was a breach of the right of self-expression of girls. I understand that after all there’s been a change only in the uniform, but the move is regressive. The length of my skirt is not a measure of my morality.”

While rehearsing for one of the scenes, Kangs apparently got so engrossed that the entire crew stopped work and couldn’t take their eyes off the actress. Sunny too was intense during his rehearsals, discussing the details with his co-stars, director and crew. A source says, `Kangs got so immersed in her rehearsal that she even got a round of applause from her crew. corruption. I think in this regard, BJP and RSS have to decide,” Ramdev said. He added, “The BJP can capitalize on the failures of Congress and emerge as an ideal political option in the next Lok Sabha elections if it puts country at the top.” On the political turmoil in the Centre, the yoga teacher said, “Every political party has betrayed the people and for them individuals have become larger than issues. I’ve been visiting places to find out at least 300 people who can be sent to the Lok Sabha in the next elections, who can work to bring India’s wealth stashed abroad and show zero tolerance of corruption, work for social and economic equality and check inflation.” Predicting Congress’s defeat, he said, “From Bofors to the helicopter scam, people of this country have seen much corruption. I am sure Congress will not fare well in the Lok Sabha elections.” He advised Samajwadi party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav to withdraw support to UPA government. “Ab to Mulayam Singh ji ko Congress ko raam raam keh dena chahiyey (now Mulayam Singh should say good bye to Congress party),” he said.

Cash transfer of subsidy could save Rs 60,000 crore

guidelines laid out in FRBM (Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management) Act, 2003. “CACP’s calculations show that direct transfer of food and fertilizer subsidies in cash to targeted beneficiaries has the potential to save almost Rs 60,000 crore, without any major adverse impact on the beneficiaries,” the study authored by Ashok Gulati, chairman of the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP), and Shweta Saini said. The CACP advises the government on price policy for

major farm commodities to help maintain the interest of producers and consumers. ”This would require political courage as well as innovative ways to implement direct cash transfers to targeted beneficiaries through Aadhaar,” the study said. The project was undertaken to identify the causes for high food inflation and suggest possible remedies. The report identified three factors which have contributed to sticky food inflation. It included the

ballooning fiscal deficit, rising farm wages and transmission of the impact of global food inflation. The study said the three factors accounted for 98% of the variations in Indian food inflation over the period 1995-96 to December 2012. Among key suggestions for tackling food inflation, the study recommended mechanization of farms to raise labour productivity, and dovetailing of MGNREGA with farm operations through panchayats. This, according to the authors, could be a way to contain ‘cost-push’ inflationary pressure. “And, in order to ensure that small farms are not over-capitalized, raising their costs of production, land lease markets should be freed to let economically viable size of the holdings to emerge. Also, custom hiring of capital farm machinery will have to be developed to contain capital costs,” the report said. It said global food inflation seeping through domestic prices could not be wished away as India was increasingly integrating with the world economy and recommended stable, predictable, and open trade policies with moderate duties of 5 to 10%. There should be a provision of special safeguards to protect from sudden spikes and troughs and this may also help to keep food inflation within the com-

fort zone of less than 5% per annum. The study also called for boosting supply response in agriculture and save on large wastages in the supply chains. It said this would require large investments in the supply chains, from agri-R&D to investments in irrigation, logistics (warehousing and movement), processing and organized retailing. “Private sector investments can be leveraged through open and more investor friendly policies on one hand, and farmer producer organizations on the other, with the two reinforcing each other for a take-off in agriculture,” it said. The report said taming food inflation and bringing it down to comfortable levels, below 5%, needed to be accorded high priority. Food inflation in India has been a major challenge to policy makers, more so during recent years when it has averaged 10% during 2008-09 to December 2012, the study said, adding that an average household still spends almost half of its expenditure on food. “These policy steps, if taken in a synchronized manner, will go a long way in not only taming food inflation in India but also lifting agri growth and reducing rural poverty much faster than has been the case so far,” the study said.

seven-year-old girl, who had crossed the international border and entered Pakistani territory through the fencing at 43KYD village in Bikaner district on Friday is likely to be returned by Pakistani Rangers on Monday. According to sources, the girl, Pooja Meghwal, was grazing cattle in the area and unintentionally crossed over to Pakistani territory as the fencing was a bit damaged in the sector. Pakistani Rangers, after witnessing the entry of the child, informed BSF men about it. Since then, the BSF has held several flag meetings with Pakistani Rangers to get the girl back. “Since Friday, we have been conducting flag meetings with Pakistani counterparts. Let’s

hope that on Monday when a flag meeting is scheduled, the Rangers after completing their investigations, might hand over the child to us,” said a senior officer of district collectorate. Sources said that on Sunday evening the Rangers invited BSF for a flag meeting which was fixed for Monday. “Since they invited us for the flag meeting, it is a positive indication in the direction of release of the girl,” said an official. BSF officials were keeping mum on the developments and preferred not to divulge more details on the meeting with Rangers. Sources said that the family of the girl is in shock after the news and they have been pleading before the local police and district administration to expedite the process of release of the girl.

eijing Olympics bronze medalist Vijender Singh, who is in the eye of a storm in connection with a multicrore drug haul, had allegedly consumed heroin about a dozen times after procuring it from suspected drug dealer NRI Anoop Singh Kahlon who is under arrest, Punjab Police said. “As per investigation conducted so far, Vijender Singh consumed the drug about 12 times and Ram Singh about five times. During the investigation, it has been established that boxers Ram Singh and Vijender Singh took heroin from Anoop Singh Kahlon and Rocky for personal

consumption between December 2012 and February 2013,” a Punjab Police spokesperson said in a press statement. But, police said both boxers “did not actively connive” with Kahlon and Rocky and nothing was recovered from them. “As such both of them are not being arrested in the case at this stage,” police said. In an exclusive report on March 9, it was in middle of December 2012 when Vijender and his roommate Ram Singh, a national champion boxer, began experimenting with heroin. The seizure of 26kg heroin by Punjab Police from Kahlon and his accomplice Rocky — arrested from Zirakpur

near Chandigarh on March 3 — has put Vijender and Ram under the police scanner. Later, on March 10, in an exclusive interview Ram had also said that he and Vijender took heroin three-four times from their “friend” Kahlon and consumed it “for fun”, but had denied knowledge of Kahlon’s business. Again on March 11 Vijender and Kahlon had spoken on the phone at least a dozen times, while Ram and Kahlon had exchanged over 50 calls during the same time. In fact, Vijender found himself under probe after Kahlon named him and Ram as “clients”.

Indian scientists developed robotic ‘jellyfish spy’ to patrol oceans!

R

esearchers, led by an Indian origin scientist, have developed a lifelike, autonomous robotic jellyfish - the size and weight of a grown man - for surveillance and monitoring of oceans. The prototype robot, 5 foot 7 inches in length and weighing 170 pounds, nicknamed Cyro, is a larger model of a robotic jellyfish the same team - headed by Shashank Priya of Blacksburg and professor of mechanical engineering at Virginia Tech -

Jellyfish are attractive candidates to mimic because of their ability to consume little energy owing to a lower metabolic rate than other marine species. They appear in wide variety of sizes, shapes and colours, allowing for several designs. They also inhabit every major oceanic area of the world and are capable of withstanding a wide range of temperatures in both fresh and salt waters, researchers said.

unveiled last year. ”A larger vehicle will allow for more payload, longer duration and longer range of operation,” said Alex Villanueva of St-Jacques, New-Brunswick, Canada. The goal is to place selfpowering, autonomous machines in waters for the purposes of surveillance and monitoring the environment, in addition to other uses such as studying aquatic life, mapping ocean floors, and monitoring ocean currents.

Priya’s team is building the jellyfish body models, integrating fluid mechanics and developing control systems. “We hope to improve on this robot and reduce power consumption and improve swimming performance as well as better mimic the morphology of the natural jellyfish,” Villanueva said. Cyro is powered by a rechargeable nickel metal hydride battery, whereas the smaller models were tethered, Priya said. The jellyfish must operate on their own for months or longer at a time as engineers likely won’t be able to capture and repair the robots, or replace power sources.

Google plans to invite a limited number of users to test the interactive glasses in the next few days after conducting an online competition, it said on Thursday. For $1,500 developers could buy the device, whose features include taking a picture by voice command, Brin said in February. In June, Brin said he expected to make the device available to product testers early this year with a broader consumer offering by 2014.

Obama White House embraces Yoga amid conservative contortions

T

he White House has wholeheartedly embraced Yoga as a worthy physical activity at a time some schools in America are railing against the ancient Indian practice, saying it promotes Hinduism. The White House announced last week that President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama will include a ‘yoga garden’ for children and their parents

who attend the traditional Easter Egg Roll festivities. “Come enjoy a session of yoga from professional instructors,” the White House exhorted thousands of workaday Americans parents and their kids from across the country who will troop into the Presidential lawns, reminding participants that the event’s theme is ‘Be Healthy, Be Active, Be You!’ It is not the first time that Obama’s residence has

hosted a yoga garden for Easter, but this year’s event is significant because of an ongoing lawsuit in California challenging the teaching of yoga in schools. In fact, the case came up for hearing in a San Diego courtroom on Thursday with a mirthful opening. In an indication of how deeprooted mainstream yoga has become in the US, it turned out that the presiding judge himself is a

yoga practitioner. “Does anybody have a problem with that?” San Diego Superior Court Judge John Meyer was reported asking at the start of the case. Dean Broyles, representing parents suing the Encinitas Union School District in a lawsuit that has gained international attention, said he was fine with Meyer presiding over the case if the judge can keep an open mind about the plaintiff’s argument regarding spiritual connections to yoga, according to reports in the local media. At the heart of the case is the argument by some parents that yoga is inherently religious, a contention most Americans, including the judge, seem to disagree with. Judge Meyer is reported to be a practitioner of Bikram Yoga, likening it to simple stretching exercises. “If you think there’s something spiritual about what I do, that’s news to me,” he was quoted as saying. The White House meanwhile is stretching every muscle and sinew to get Americans, including children, to get more concerned about the decline in the nation’s overall well-being and its soaring healthcare bill. The drive is led by Michelle Obama, a health and fitness, and herself a yoga enthusiast. The yoga garden is conducted by Leah Cullis, a certified yoga teacher who the White House reached out to in 2009 as soon when the Obamas came to office. Cullis, whose husband, event producer John Liipfert, handled

Obama’s Presidential inauguration, selects yoga instructors from all over the US to put parents and children through basic yoga drills. ”The mission of the event is to share ways where families and children can use simple tools for an active lifestyle — tools that require no props and no money and which they can go home and do it themselves,” Cullis said, speaking of her association with the White House initiative. In fact, the White House has taken its yoga drive one step — or one stretch — further. It has now initiated a Presidential Active Lifestyle Award (PALA), a Obama White House Challenge designed to motivate Americans to make physical activity and healthy eating part of their everyday life. In embracing the practice, the White House also dismissed any specific religious connotation sought to be attached to yoga. “Yoga has become a universal language of spiritual exercise in the United States, crossing many lines of religion and cultures,” the White House said without any reference to the ongoing controversies and lawsuit. “Every day, millions of people practice yoga to improve their health and overall well-being. That’s why we’re encouraging everyone to take part in PALA, so show your support for yoga and answer the challenge.” Among the invitees for the White House Easter Monday festivities is Ajai Dhadwal, an Indian-American field hockey player, who had represented the US.

Bengali New Year - 2013 It’s only the 15th century by the Bengali calendar, and Bengalis are fast forgetting the traditional ways to celebrate the ‘Naba Barsho’ (Beng. naba = new, barsho = year). However, people still wear new clothes, exchange sweets and pleasantries among friends and acquaintances. Younger people touch the feet of elders and seek their blessings for the coming year. There’s also a custom of wearing gem-studded rings to appease the stars and planets! Near and dear ones send gifts and greeting cards to each other. On that auspicious day we wish all Bengali friends “Shubho Naba Barsho!” (Happy New Year!) on Poila Boishakh. Ushering in the New Year with Rabindra Sangeet or Tagore’s musical invocation Esho Hey Baisakh Esho Esho (Come Baisakh, Come O Come!), or the relatively obscure composition Aaj Ranashaje Bajiye Bishan Esheche Esheche Baisakh.

The Bengali penchant for gormandizing good food comes through best on Poila Baisakh. Household kitchens exude the aroma of freshly prepared Bengali delicacies, especially sweet dishes, because it’s thought to be a good omen to start the year with mishtanna or traditional sweets such as Rosogollas, Payesh, Sandesh, Kalakand and Ras Malai. The New Year cuisine for lunch, of course, contains various preparations of fish and rice. Those who prefer to go out to eateries get to have some pure pleasantries for the palate, and other mouthwatering culinary dalliances. For Bengali traders and shop owners, Poila Baisakh is Haal Khata time - an auspicious day to ‘open’ the ledger. Ganesh and Lakshmi Puja are solemnized in almost all shops and business centers, and regular customers are formally invited to attend the evening party. Bengali Society of Melbourne (BSM) celebrates this auspicious cultural event for the 1st time in the Wyndham Council at Woodville Primary School, 33-57 Warringa Crescent, Hoppers Crossing VIC 3029 on Sunday 14th April 2013. This is a strictly RSVP event. Please refer to www.bsm.org.au for further details or email info@bsm.org.au.

That Bad Saas-Good Bahu Show!

y now, we know that if we throw a dart at a Hindi serial, it will, in all likelihood, hit either a Bad Saas or a Good Bahu. The former persecutes the latter and the latter suffers quietly. Even when we are told that a serial is different – such as Diya Aur Baati (Star Plus) which was allegedly about a girl who dreamt of becoming an IPS officer with the support of her husband – we end up with a Bad Saas-Good Bahu story. (In Diya Aur Baati, the girl is still being harangued by her mother-in-law and is about as far away from becoming an IPS officer as Shakti Kapoor is to becoming another Salman Khan). Which is why I am very wary of accepting the premise of the two new serials that have begun on Sony (Chhan Chhan) and Zee (Badaltey Rishton Ki Daastan). Chhan Chhan is apparently a takeoff on the 1980 film, Khoobsurat, in which a vivacious, freespirited girl (Rekha) visits her sister’s sasural and wins over the strict mother-in-law, played by Dina Pathak. But Khoobsurat was made by Hrishikesh Mukehrjee, master of the warm-hearted, middle-ofthe-road, middle-class film which rarely failed to charm. Can we even speak of Chhan Chhan in the same breath? Anyway, the serial is supposed

to be about a lively, forthright girl called Chhan Chhan (yes that really is her name, and she’s played by Sanaya Irani) who will eventually tame her orthodox, obnoxious saas, Umaben (Supriya Pathak). At the moment, Chhan Chhan and Umaben have just met a few times and have clashed over dowry (Umaben thinks it’s all right to give and take dowry; Chhan

Chhan abhors it). At the moment, the show has a sort-of modern feel (Chhan Chhan is a jean-clad dog trainer, her very nice normal mother is a history professor and her father is a painter). But if the show does end up as yet another cookie-cutter Bad Saas-Good Bahu show, well, we’ll just have to clock another dud down the drain.

Shefali Zariwala, Parag Tyagi sweat it out

In Badaltey Rishton… (which is based on a hit Bengali serial, Khela), the Bad Saas is replaced by the Bad Father-In-Law, and two women – his widowed bahu and her friend – are supposed to take on this patriarchal ogre. (He really is an ogre; everyone has to take permission from him to breathe). Wait and watch is the only way to go, I guess.

In international shows, coming up next week is an intriguing new series, Hannibal (AXN), based on the sinister serial killer created by novelist Thomas Harris. We’ve all seen Anthony Hopkins’ chilling turn as the cannibalistic Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs, but the TV series goes back to the time when Hannibal was not what he became. Sounds promising.

rom the thirsty person’s point of view Alcohol looks heavenly when it is ice cold in a tall mug, with cloud like froth humming over the rim. For most a beer can simply scrub away the fatigue of the day. Nevertheless a heavenly thing like Alcohol has a well known life-threatening effect on the body’s nervous system. Alcohol is a natural mix of hydrogen, carbon, and oxygen. It is a fickle, transparent liquid that has a trivial characteristic odor. It is composed from the fermentation of sugars and starches and widely used, either pure or denatured as an intoxicating beverage. The nervous system consists of two main divisions, the central nervous system - the brain and the spinal cord and the peripheral nervous system- the cranial, spinal, autonomic nerves sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. The spinal cord directs sensory information from the peripheral nervous system, both somatic and autonomic, to the brain. It carries out motor information from the brain to the body’s skeletal muscles, smooth muscle, cardiac muscle and glands. The brain gathers sensory contributions from the spinal cord as well as from its own nerves. It assigns most of its volume and computational power towards handing out its various sensory inputs and instructs appropriate, coordinated, motor outputs. Ultimately the nervous system is the body’s center of every day operations. Alcohol enters the body when

April 2013 Edition

it is consumed through the mouth. Only a small amount of alcohol stays in the stomach, the rest heads towards the small intestine. The small intestine is a part of the gastrointestinal tract, which is located between the stomach and the colon (large intestine). The small intestine is the gateway for absorption of practically all nutrients into the blood. Through the walls of the small intestine alcohol enters the bloodstream. After alcohol is immersed into the bloodstream, it streams swiftly throughout the body. Although alcohol is bound to water because of hydrogen bonding, its unique hydrophilic qualities make it an ideal molecule for rapid entry and exit from the brain. In the human body the central nervous system is damaged by alcohol more then any other bodily system. Alcohol decreases the central nervous system’s activity, and reduces anxiety, tension, and inhibitions - alcohol is a central nervous system depressant. If alcohol is consumed in large amounts, especially on an empty stomach making it easier for alcohol to rush into the bloodstream, the possibilities of being poisoned or becoming intoxicated greatly exist. Immense amounts of alcohol can result in loss of motor control and cognitive faculties, euphoria and unconsciousness. The more a person stays unconscious due to heavy drinking the more likely it is that that person will receive miniature brain hemorrhages. Each hemorrhage is a point were brain cells die from lack

of oxygen. Clinical symptoms of the central nervous system being high with alcohol are diminution of attention, emotional instability, decreased sensatory response, increased reaction time, impaired balance, disturbance of vision and perception of color, form, motion and dimensions, muscular in coordination, impaired consciousness, depressed reflexes, subnormal body temperature, impaired circulation and respiration and possible death from respiratory arrest. During alcohol intoxication memory dysfunctions vary from momentary episodes of forgetting to critical amnestic

syndromes, which are accompanied by structural changes in the brain. “Blackout” is one of the most common and dangerous form of memory loss during alcohol intake. One the whole “blackout” is complete amnesia that can last from hours to days depending on the length of the drinking spree. In serious, long term drinkers there is a shortage of B- vitamins (especially thiamine) which interrupts nerve operations, the results of this grave deficiency on the brain generates Wernicke’s encephalopathy. The symptoms of Wernicke’s encephalopathy are instability of speech and

gait, bewilderment and eventual coma. A syndrome known as the Korsakoff syndrome, which is distinguish by amnesia, apathy and disorientation, can be the result of additional deficiencies of thiamine. Great amount of thiamine deficiency in alcoholics can also lead in heart failure due to reduced pumping efficiency in the heart, usually combined with edema - fluid collection in the tissues. Alcoholics are prone to suffer from psychiatric illnesses starting at anxiety and/or depression, and ending at paranoia and/or dementia. These mental disorders can lead to attempts of and actual suicide.

Khalsa Panth 169

TIMELESS IS HIS IMAGE,- NOT BEGOT

BY THE GRACE OF THE GUR Vaisakhi is an important historic holiday of Sikhism which occurs in mid April on the first day of the month of Vaisakh according to the scripture based Nanakshahi calendar. Vaisakhi day commemorates the first Sikh baptism ceremony and the creation of the Khalsa by Tenth Guru Gobind Singh. Vaisakhi (also spelled Baisakhi) is the festival which celebrates the founding of the Sikh community known as the Khalsa. It is celebrated on April 14 each year. On Vaisakhi day in 1699, Guru Gobind Singh summoned Sikhs from all over India to the city of Anandpur Sahib. At this gathering, the Guru called upon Sikhs to uphold their faith and preserve the Sikh religion. Guru Gobind Singh then lifted his sword and asked that anyone prepared to give his life for his faith to come forward. There was a big silence, but the Guru went on repeating his demand. One Sikh finally came

forward and followed the Guru into a tent. Shortly after, the Guru reappeared alone with his sword covered in blood, and asked for a second volunteer. Another Sikh stepped forward and again the Guru took him into the tent, and re-appeared alone with his sword covered with blood. This was repeated until five Sikhs had offered their heads for the Guru. Finally, the Guru emerged from the tent with all five men dressed piously in blue. Guru Gobind Singh called the five Sikhs the Panj Pyare, the Five Beloved Ones. The Panj Pyare were then baptized in a unique ceremony called pahul. Guru Gobind Singh prepared amrit (holy water) in a bowl using a short steel sword. Then the Guru’s wife, Mata Sundri, added patashas (sugar crystals) into the amrit. After completing prayers, Guru Gobind Singh sprinkled the amrit on each of the Panj Pyare. The Guru then knelt before the five and asked them to baptize him as well. The Guru pro-

claimed that the Panj Pyare would be the embodiment of the Guru himself: “Where there are Panj Pyare, there am I. When the Five meet, they are the holiest of the holy.” The Panj Pyare were the first members of the new Sikh community called the Khalsa. Guru Gobind Singh gave the Khalsa a unique identity with five distinctive symbols of purity and courage, known today as the Five K’s. The Guru gave all Khalsa men the surname of Singh (lion) as a reminder to be courageous. Women took on the surname Kaur (princess) to emphasize dignity. With the distinct Khalsa identity, Guru Gobind Singh gave all Sikhs the opportunity to live lives of courage, sacrifice, and equality. These Sikhs were to dedicate their lives to the service of others and the pursuit of justice. NAL TRUTH IS HIS NAME;

ALL THINGS,

T ENMITY WITH NOTHING,

RU, MADE KNOWN TO MEN. The Great Holocaust (1762) The Sikhs had given a good thrashing to the returning armies of Ahmed Shah Abdali after the Battle of Panipat. Angered by this, Abdali decided to teach the Sikhs a lesson in his next invasion. Although the Sikhs had prepared for safety in anticipation of the attack, yet the suddenness with which it came took them by surprise. Consequently thousands of Sikhs laid down their lives fighting in the plains of Kup. Under the command of Jassa Singh Ahluwalia, the various Sikh Misls (confederacies) came together and fought unitedly to save the Panth. This Massacre, known as Vada Ghallughara (Great Holocaust), claimed the lives of over fifty thousand Sikhs. Nonetheless, the same year, Sikhs took over Sarhind and celebrated VAISAKHI in the HARMANDIR SAHIB. Massacre at Jallianwala Bagh (1919) Thousands of Punjabis, assembled for VAISAKHI at the Jallianwala Bagh,

were caught unaware, when General Dyer ordered gunfire at them without any warning. Nearly 1500 people were killed; out of which 347 were Singhs. The killings at the Jallianwala Bagh evoked strong reactions of anger and grief in the whole country. Martyrs of Amritsar Vaisakhi 1978, This day must Not be Forgotten, The Bloody Awakening On 13th April 1978 a cult supported by the Indian Government known as Nirankaris under the leadership of Gurbachana who had claimed himself to be a prophet and incarnation of Guru Nanak Dev Ji held a procession and a conference at Amritsar. During their conference the speakers made venomous attacks on Sikhism, Sikh Gurus, Sikh scriptures etc. Over 150 Sikhs under the command of Bhai Fauja Singh of the Akhand Kirtani Jatha, marched from the Darbar Sahib to protest peacefully against this fake Nirankari proces-

sion in which Gurbachana had seated himself on a higher position that of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. As the Sikhs approached the meeting place, the police stopped the Sikh protesters under the guise of granting them official and safe passage. During this time an ambush was set in motion, the police on duty hurled tear gas bombs against the unarmed Gursikhs and then armed units of Nirankaris briskly advanced forward and sprayed bullets indiscriminately with machine guns. This incident resulted in the death of 13 devout Gursikhs. The Delhi police and the High Court bailed out all the Nirankaris involved and never charged them. This denial of justice and the failure to deal with the guilty led to resentment amongst the Sikhs. The Indian Government was clearly pro-Nirankaris. This Amritsar massacre became the starting point of the new phase of the struggle of the Sikh Nation.

Thanks to ‘Dostana’, Priyanka got ‘Planes’

Tusshar Kapoor denies ‘unhealthy competition’ with sister Ekta

A

ctress Priyanka Chopra, who has lent her voice for a character called Ishani in action-packed 3D animated film “Planes”, got the opportunity because of her film ‘Dostana’. “Planes” is directed by Klay Hall and he said: “I became a fan of Priyanka after seeing her film ‘Dostana’.” “She’s a triple treat - an actor, singer and dancer - and we

noticed that when she came in to record her lines, she attracted the attention of a lot of people who’d stop by to watch her in action. Priyanka exudes heart, charm and warmth, and we’re incredibly blessed to have her as part of our cast,” he said in a statement. Disney’s “Planes” is about Dusty’s dream of competing as a high-flying air racer and his decidedly unfortunate fear of

heights. Hall said: “We decided to make India a stop on the race for two reasons: Practicality -- the planes needed to refuel in that region of the world -- and aesthetics -- India is a beautiful, exotic country that many of us had experienced. We loved the opportunity to highlight the warmth of India’s people, colours and culture in the world we were creating for ‘Planes’.”

ctor Tusshar Kapoor has denied reports of “unhealthy competition” between his sister Ekta Kapoor and fellow producers over the release date of the second installment of Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai and Chennai Express in single screen theatres. Clearing the air on the reports that Ekta has decided to club Once Upon A Time in Mumbai Again (OUATIM 2) with her five other films, Tusshar said there

was no conflict of interest with other producers. Both OUATIM 2 and UTV Motion Pictures Chennai Express are likely to be released on Eid this year. “I guess we had announced the release of OUATIM 2 long ago. We are sticking to our old strategy. No one is looking to outdo another. There is no unhealthy competition. I think the release date was announced earlier”, Tusshar told reporters on behalf of his elder sister Ekta.

It was my dream to work with Karan Johar: Saqib Saleem

H

e is just two films old in the industry but newcomer Saqib Saleem, who was last seen in Yash Raj’s “Mere Dad Ki Maruti”, is happy that he is working with Karan Johar in “ Bombay Talkies”. Saqib, 24, will be sharing the screen space with Rani Mukerji and Randeep Hooda for Johar’s segment of the Indian anthology film. The film is being helmed by four directors Anurag Kashyap,

Johar, Zoya Akhtar and Dibakar Banerjee and will be releasing on May 3, to mark the centenary year of Indian cinema. Its trailer was launched yesterday. “As a newcomer in the industry, it was my dream to work with Karan Johar. When my casting director informed me about this project, I could not believe. I met Karan and he narrated the script and I must say that I never had such a better narration in life. I was actually visualising each

and every scene in my mind. “I will be sharing the screen space with Rani Mukerji and Randeep Hooda in this segment of 25 minutes. I can’t ask for more than this at this point of my career. I had the best time of my life working on this film,” Saqib told . Having a dream start with Yash Raj’s “Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge”, the actor was next seen in banner’s last youth production “Mere Dad Ki Maruti”.

The actor said he is a big fan of superstar Aamir Khan and wants to have a body of work like him. “I am a very big fan of Aamir Khan. He has a great filmography. I also want to do films like him. I don’t want to be stuck to any specific genre. I don’t think about my future but I am happy that I have been accepted well in this industry,” he said. Even his last film “Mere Dad...” was accepted well in the boxoffice and Saqib said he is over-

whelmed by the response. “I am getting a congratulatory message in every five minutes. It seems nice when people walk up to you and appreciate your performance. Reviews are fantastic and it’s a good feeling. The film has been received well in Northern India,” he said. Saqib’s sister Huma Qureshi is already on her way to stardom after starring in “Gangs of Wasseypur” and upcoming film “Dayan”.

Enough of 100 crore club, just want good roles: Asin

C

hronicling the sinister plot by Nathuram Godse and his partners to kill the ‘Mahatma’, Manohar Malgonkar’s book ‘The Men Who Killed Gandhi’ would soon be made into a film. Roli Books, the publishers of the book, announced that Cinetek Films have bought the rights for the motion picture to be directed by Siddharth Sengupta. The film is scheduled for release in January 2014 to mark the 66th death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, they said in a statement. The shooting will coincide with the Independence Day on August 15 this year. The book is an account of Gandhi’s assassination with details of the plan, the

politics revolving around and the trial of Nathuram Godse and his partners in crime - Narayan Apte, Vishnu Karkare, Gopal Godse and Madanlal Pahwa. The book looks at the reasons why Mahatma Gandhi was killed and how these five men came together and planned the assassination. The author Malgonkar was then living in New Delhi, only one bungalow away from Birla House, where Gandhiji was killed. When these events occurred he had access to some of the family members of the conspirators. As a result, he came into possession of several important photographs and documents related to the assassination.

aving starred in big budget movies like Ghajini and Ready, it would seem Asin is doing fine in Bollywood but the actress says she now wants to do good, well written roles. The 27-year-old actress is often referred to as the ‘Queen of 100 crore films’ as five out of her six films in her Bollywood career, including last years’ hits Bol Bachchan and Khiladi 786, are part of the elite club. These films, often driven by their male leads, don’t have much for their actresses to do when it comes to performance. “I have taken a conscious decision about my career. This year I plan to take it little slower. The box office record and 100 crore club, big films, good collection- all that has happened. “I should move forward and try and do more roles which give me more scope to perform. I think it is the right time in my career to take this decision since it is now that I have the freedom to choose my roles,” Asin said. The actress, who began her acting career in the South Indian film industry, turned to Bollywood after establishing herself there. Her first Hindi film, Ghajini opposite Aamir Khan was the remake of her breakthrough film of the same name. Asin was singled out for acting her part brilliantly and remained in the memory despite sharing screen space with Aamir Khan. Not surprisingly, she was chosen to star alongside superstars like Salman

Khan and Akshay Kumar. Asin is keen to add some variety to her resume and focus on creative satisfaction. “I don’t want to do exactly female oriented roles. I do not want the whole film and story to revolve around me only. Whatever there was to prove has already been proven with these entertainers. Now I think I should try to satisfy the artist in me. “We all want to work for creative satisfaction and that will come when you portray a very well written character because that is when you get to perform. I don’t believe in being part of any race,” Asin said. The actress has just returned from a long vacation in the US with friends and family. The visit was blown out of proportion with reports of an impending marriage, which Asin later denied. “I just laughed it off. When people don’t know where you are, then they tend to speculate and it was somebody’s overactive imagination going overboard. It is funny because I am single and there is no guy or fiance at all. I am not taken,” Asin said. “I am happy that a lot of people came to me and clarified without giving it much of an importance.” When asked what is keeping her busy, Asin said, “Right now I am caught up with the endorsement responsibilities because last year was all about films and promotions. With Holi and IPL coming up, I am busy with both campaigns.”

bollywood music Music Review : Chashme Baddoor

O

nce the king of comedy, David Dhawan, is going through a lean phase with his last big hit PARTNER in 2007! But looks like things will be back on track for the director with his next, CHASHME BADDOOR which happens to be a remake of the iconic hit film of the same name. Music of David’s films has always been very entertaining and has garnered popularity, especially amongst the masses and youth. So let’s check out if it happens this time too, with the aid of his trusted lieutenants, SajidWajid. First up is ‘Har Ek Friend Kamina Hota Hai’, a song that has already attracted attention because of its’ addictive rhythm and humorous hook line, ‘Har ek friend’ borrowed from the famous cell-phone ad jingle, ‘Har ek friend zaroori hota hai’. Rendered by the versatile Sonu Nigam whose emotive vocals and voice modulations are just right and suited to the theme of the movie. Helping the cause further are the apt lyrics by Kausar Munir that are superbly situational and a mirror of the characters of the lead protagonists. Next up, ‘Dhichkyaaon Doom Doom’, by Ali Zafar and Shreya Ghoshal, is a light ‘chhed-chaad’ or ‘nok-jhonk’ song between the two lead protagonists. The tune has Sonu Nighm its inspiration from quite a

few of RD Burman’s numbers like ‘Chura Liya Hai’ and even the arrangements hark back to the good old days of the seventies. Neelesh’s lyrics are funny and very identifiable and the youth will definitely give it a thumps up. There is a second version with Wajid and Shreya and it’s not much different from the first. The mood is once again retro, and this time it’s Kishore Kumar and his house of music that inspires Sajid-Wajid for ‘Early Morning’, a number that is set in the same corridor as ‘Mere Saamne Wali Khidki’ (PADOSAN) . Kishore Da’s much popular ‘yodling’ and rib tickling sounds are a testimony to our claim. However the USP of the song is the teaming of Sonu and Ali Zafar and superb lyrics by Jalees Sherwani, whose reference to Face book, Yahoo Messenger, BBM will be patronized by the youth and Gen X. There is a remix version sung by Ali Zafar, ‘Early Morning’ complete with nice rhythmic rap and lovely female chorals and is a good hear. From one fun number to another, ‘Ishq Mohallah’ is sung by Mika Singh and Wajid and the addictive chorus in the beginning reminds of SajidWajid’s very own chartbuster, ‘Chammak Challo’ (ROWDY RATHORE) which was in itself a Laxmikant-Pyarelal inspired composition. Once again it’s

Neelesh’s zany, comical and apt lyrics that serves as the highlight of the track. We next encounter another fun situational track, ‘Andha Ghoda Race Mein Dauda, a song befits the mood/ theme of the movie . Even though the song starts of as a soft, soothing fun track, it later transforms in to an all-

out zany rock... Wajid and Ali Zafar along with Neuman Pinto are all in their elements and so is the lyricist Jalees Sherwani whose similes and proverbs are simply hilarious! Summing up, the audio of CHASHME BADDOOR is targeted at the masses and youth and that is exactly where the response to the

songs will come from, as evident from the popularity of ‘Har Ek Friend’. However, the class and mass appeal of PARTNER and MUJHSE SHAADI KAROGI is missing and especially since this is a remake of such a classy film, and with actors like Ali Zafar, Siddharth etc one expected more from the team.

vital for Australia’s economy and energy security. “[It is about] the flows of energy,” he said. “Where is the flow of energy going to go? Well, we are going to be exporting uranium to India, so the Indian Ocean is going to become even more important as an energy highway/ “China has got a huge energy deficit; South Korea, Japan - all energy deficits - so where do they take their energy from? n ancient mustard plant that stars in modern Indian and Chinese cuisine experienced two “waves” of migration into India and China, says a new study. Commonly known as oriental or Indian mustard, Brassica juncea is widely grown in Australia, India, China, Europe, and Canada. It is an economically important oilseed crop that has been studied internationally to improve commercial productivity. Led by Assistant Professor Sheng Chen of UWA’s School of Plant Biology and UWA Institute of Agriculture, researchers in India, China, and Australia collaborated on a genetic study that aims to improve the plant’s diversity and ensure its sustainability as climate changes around the world. The study was published this week in the Journal of Heredity. “Mustard has been cultivated for up to 7,000 years in China, where it is used as both an oilseed and vegetable crop,” the authors write. “It is the predominant oilseed crop in India and has been an important component of Indian agriculture since 2300BC.”

people are moving here in the first place has to do with insecurity somewhere else, and that insecurity needs to be dealt with collectively.” Punjab University’s Professor Sanjay Chaturvedi says the report suggests Australia and India assume regional leadership with an actively engaged Indo-Pacific region. “We believe, I suppose, that India and Australia have to show leadership role in operationalising this concept of a new energy security [and] maritime security regional organisation,” he said. Diplomacy could continue under the existing regional grouping, the Indian Ocean Rim Association for Regional Co-operation (IORARC). Australia’s Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign Affairs says that role may be examined when Australia assumed the chair of the group in November. “Our approach to Indian Ocean Issues is incremental, but it is very purposeful,” he said. “We are trying not to overreach particularly in regional organisations, but we are also taking care not set our sights and ambitions too low.” The Australian Senate has an inquiry underway into the Indian Ocean region, and the AustraliaIndia relationship is expected to feature prominently in the next Defence White Paper due later this year.

Indian Mustard ‘Migrated’ From West Asia

and through the Indian Ocean at some point or other.” The Indian Ocean region is under a variety of traditional and new threats, such as piracy, terrorism, people smuggling, rising sea levels and overfishing. All the major players in the Indian Ocean, including China, India, the United States and Australia are inter-dependent. Professor Dennis Rumley says there is mutual interest in managing and resolving conflict . “If you look at security as a multi-dimensional thing, not just traditional, but including maritime, environmental and human and economic security, all of the regional security regimes occur at the sub-regional level - there is no overarching maritime regional authority,” he said. “It is not just a state responsibility. The nature of threats are now beyond the state or within the state.” The report by the Australia India Institute says the approach to the Indian Ocean region needs to change. Professor Dennis Rumley says the current security arrangements are “fragile” and “incomplete”. “I don’t think you can solve problems of piracy, or people smuggling or whatever on a piecemeal basis, because there’s a source of the problem and a solution to the problem,” he said. “The actual source and the end result are both important...why

The study investigated mustard’s molecular genetic diversity as the Indian and Chinese types are distinct and adapted to different environments. The Indian type is brown-seeded and adapted to autumn sowing in northern and central India where winters and mild and dry. Chinese types – both yellow and brown-seeded – are adapted to spring sowing in higher parts of central and western China while others in China are winter-hardy. Plant scientists have disagreed for many years about mustard’s origins. Using molecular markers, the authors concluded that in ancient times there were two “waves” of migration of Brassica juncea into India and China from West Asia and places such as Afghanistan. The Indian and Chinese agricultural types separated from each other during thousands of years of cultivation and selection, but are joined in history and ancestry through these waves of migration. The authors hope that understanding the heritage of Brassica juncea will help broaden even further the genetic diversity of the crop and breeding for the future.

It all depends on the choices we make in life.” There has been speculation about strife in her married life, and that she has chosen to be away from Bollywood to avoid probing questions. “Ranvir (Shorey) and I have laughed over all the speculations about our situation,” says Konkona. “I have never spoken about my marriage or my relationship openly and I don’t want to. rithik Roshan has been in the film industry for over a decade now and feels there are no negative aspects to being a star. The 39-year-old started his career with the 2000 hit Kaho Naa...Pyaar Hai and has been part of many successful projects. The actor feels that everything is okay as long as an actor does not focus too much on himself. (Read: After Agneepath, Karan Johar ropes in Hrithik Roshan for Shuddhi) “There are no side effects of anything. If there is a negative feedback then it is just a feedback. There is no negative side-effect. We all have areas in

our life which are not perfect and we can choose to sit and complain about that,” Hrithik said. “I feel the best way to live is to not to have a camera facing you. It should be facing outwards and you should be watching the world and you should be seeing your reflection on other people. If they are smiling at you and they are happy that means you are doing good,” he added. Having been part of blockbusters like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Mission Kashmir, Jodhaa Akbar and Agneepath, Hrithik feels blessed to have received all the love from people around him and says it is his aim to spread happiness and give back the affection. (Read: When Amrita Puri was “rude” to Hrithik Roshan ) “My aim is to be able to make people around me feel as good as possible and basically give back all the goodness that I have felt. Kangna Ranaut refuses tattoo on cleavage

K

angna Ranaut was to get inked again (after Tanu weds Manu) on her cleavage for her next film Queen, directed by Vikas Bahl. However this time the actress refused. In TWM, Kangna, in a scene, pulls down her top and shows off a tattoo reading ‘Awasthi’, her screen boyfriend’s name and shocks a prospective groom. Bahl had wanted a similar ele-

ment in Queen since Kangna essays the role of a desi girl whose boyfriend ditches her right before their marriage. But Kangna was not keen on doing a similar act again. She didn’t want any comparisons between her two roles. Bahl says, “I was keen for her to get a tattoo that said ‘Queen’, but then we discussed and I agreed with her point of view and we dropped the idea completely.”

roubled New Zealand cricketer Jesse Ryder was in an induced coma with a fractured skull and serious internal injuries on Thursday after being severely beaten as he left a bar in the South Island city of Christchurch, police said. The 28-year-old was in a critical condition in hospital, and his family were at his bedside. The attack came just days before the talented batsman was to take up a lucrative Indian Premier League ( IPL) contract. Ryder has a history of disciplinary lapses and alcohol-related incidents, but although he had been drinking before the early morning attack police said alcohol was not a factor. Detective senior sergeant Brian Archer said there was a brief altercation involving Ryder and “two or three” people when he stepped outside the bar. Ryder then crossed the road to a nearby fast-food outlet where he was attacked by one of the people from the initial confrontation. “The hospital advise he is in a critical condition. He is in an induced coma as a result of suffering multiple injuries,” Archer said. Prime Minister John Key, who led messages of support for Ryder, said the attack appeared “somewhat unprovoked, so there must be something behind that and the as-

sault seems extremely vicious”. “Obviously we wish him a speedy recovery,” he added. A witness, identified only as Adam, said Ryder tried to fight back as four men “absolutely smashed him”. He said he was not sure if the attackers were known to Ryder but said they “damn knew who he was”. Police were viewing closed-circuit television coverage of the brutal attack and Archer said they were following “positive lines of enquiry”. The incident occurred while Ryder was having a night out with his Wellington team-mates after earlier losing a season-ending oneday match to Canterbury. The batsman is on a self-imposed break from international cricket to address “personal issues” following a series of incidents. New Zealand Cricket Players’ Association chief executive Heath Mills said Ryder was known to have resumed drinking in recent weeks. “It will be an ongoing struggle for Jesse and we need to do all we can to help him. So it shouldn’t be a surprise if, in the future, we have to deal with isolated issues,” Mills said. “What I will say is Jesse was having a few drinks with his teammates at the conclusion of his season. The actual assault was not an alcohol-fuelled incident.”

Jesse Ryder in coma after bar brawl in Christchurch

Ryder, who last played for New Zealand a year ago, was due to fly out to India this weekend to compete for the Delhi Daredevils, who paid $260,000 for his services at an auction.

Last year, Ryder, who has a Test average of 40.93 and a highest Test score of 201, took his manager and a psychologist with him to India when he played for the Pune Warriors.

“We are all shocked by what has occurred and extremely concerned for Jesse. New Zealand Cricket’s thoughts are with him and his family,” said New Zealand Cricket chief executive David White.

ce Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal was on Wednesday nominated for the 2012 Female Player of the Year Award of the Badminton World Federation on the back of an impressive performance in the season which had seen her win a bronze medal in London Olympics. World number two Saina is the only non-Chinese among the five contenders for the top annual award among women shuttlers instituted by the BWF. The four Chinese are world number one Li Xuerui of China who won eight titles in 2012, including the London Olympic gold medal, Olympic silver medallist Wang Yihan Olympic Women’s Doubles gold-winning pair Tian Qing/Zhao Yunlei (China). Should a pair win the award, they will share it, the BWF said in a statement. Saina won four major titles in 2012 -- two Super Series and two Grand Prix Gold events, besides bagging London Olympics women’s singles bronze. She won Indonesian Open and Denmark Open Super Series titles besides the Thailand Open Grand Prix Gold and Swiss Open Grand Prix Gold events.

Among those nominated for the Male Player of the Year for 2012 are two-time Olympic gold medallist, Lin Dan of China and his perennial rival, Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei -the current world number pone and two-time Olympic silver medallist. Others in that category are Olympic bronze medallist and winner of BWF World Super Series Finals, Chen Long (China); Men’s Doubles Olympic gold medallists Cai Yun/Fu Haifeng (China) and Lee Yong Dae and now retired Jung Jae Sung Korea), who won the Men’s Doubles bronze medal at London 2012. The key criteria for nomination include exceptional and consistent performance across a calendar year, performance at the Olympics, BWF events and Super Series events, a good role model for the sport which goes beyond on-court performance, ranked among top five in the world in the year of nomination. The announcement of the winners -- to be chosen by the BWF Council -- and the presentation of prizes will take place at a gala dinner here on May 18, following the BWF Annual General Meeting.

e has relinquished the Delhi Daredevils captaincy after last season but Virender Sehwag feels that his decision will have no bearing on his approach as he again shoulders the burden of being the batting mainstay of the franchise in the sixth edition of IPL. “I don’t think it matters whether I am captaining the side or not. Captaincy has never affected my game. I have never ever felt the pressure on my batting while leading the side,” Sehwag said. “I have never felt any pressure as captain, my approach to batting has always remained the same”, he said when asked whether Sri Lankan Mahela Jayawardene donning the mantle of captain will lessen the burden on him. For Sehwag, captaincy and performance are two separate entities which should not be mixed with each other. “I have always maintained that captaincy and performance are two separate issues altogether. If you talk about pressures of captaincy, then I had scored five consecutive half centuries during the last edition of IPL and the highest number of runs for Delhi Daredevils,” he said. Sehwag’s five half-centuries in a row (he scored 495 runs last season) is an IPL record but he reckons that it might be sur-

passed this year. “Someone can break it this year,” he answered with a smile after his interaction with kids during NDTV’s ‘Marks for Sports’ Campaign at Modern School (Barakhamba Road) ground. Sehwag admitted that Kevin Pietersen, who is out with knee injury will be missed a lot as his contribution was immense in helping the team reach last four stage in the fifth edition of the cash rich league. “KP is a big occasion player and he will certainly be missed but we have other players who can put their hands up and be counted. We have 10 quality foreign players and whoever replaces him in the XI will get an opportunity to make a name for himself on the big stage. If they can grab their chance and prove their worth, we can win the trophy.” Asked about how he is shaping up going into the first game, the 34-year-old opener said, “Very well and I feel 100 percent fit.” This edition will be doubly important for Sehwag as he tries to make a comeback into the Indian team and he feels that any player on his day can win the championship for his team. “If one guy can play particularly well on a given day, he can very well win the trophy for his team. ample. He played a superb knock in the IPL final and Kolkata Knight Riders won the trophy. I am hopeful that someone will do it for the Delhi Daredevils this year,” Sehwag added. However, the veteran of 104 Tests and 251 ODIs felt that it will not be fair to earmark certain teams as favourites. “Look at the IPL history and you know that any team can win the tournament. It is difficult to pin-

point any one team. Every team has the capability to pose equal challenge and it will depend on how a particular team fares on the day.” The ‘Nawab of Najafgarh’ wants everyone to keep guessing when asked about whether one would find him wearing spectacles during the league. “You will see that,” he answered. United’s Vidic thirsty for M FA Cup success

April 2013 Edition

anchester United captain Nemanja Vidic says he is eager to taste success in the FA Cup for the first time, ahead of his side’s quarterfinal replay at Chelsea. Vidic was on the losing team when United lost to Chelsea in the first final at the new Wembley Stadium in 2007 and has also seen his side fall to Everton and Manchester City in the semifinals. However, with United 15 points clear in the Premier League, the Serbian has set his sights on the only domestic trophy that is still to elude him in his seven-year spell at Old Trafford. “My aim before every season is to win a trophy,” said Vidic. “You want to be there for the big games and once the season is finished, and you are going home or on holiday, you want to see what you have won. That is the thing that has always pushed me.” Despite the FA Cup having apparently lost some of its lustre in recent years, as the leading clubs prioritise the Champions League above all else, Vidic says it retains a unique appeal. “The cup in Serbia is obviously a trophy, but the league has always been seen as the main thing,” said the centre-back. “Over the last few years in England the semifinals and finals have always been interesting because Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal have always been there and they

tive taken up by NDTV and Nirmal. “It is a great privilege to be associated with NDTV Marks for Sports Campaign. I believe country has a great sporting talent and such initiative will encourage parents and teachers to support more active and healthier outlook in their children’s lives. Also if there can be marks for studies, there should be marks for sports as well,” he concluded.

are the teams who are always watched. “People always want to see them, especially when they are fighting for a trophy. It makes them important games.” The winners of Monday’s game at Stamford Bridge will face Manchester City in the last four, and Vidic admits he would rather have a less intimidating opponent awaiting in the last four. “I would prefer to have a semifinal against Blackpool!” he said. “I want to win the trophy. That is more important than who we play against. “Obviously City are in the semifinal. That would mean one more step towards a trophy. But first it is Chelsea.” After 16 months dogged by knee problems, Vidic has returned to full fitness to marshal a United defence that has kept a clean sheet in six successive Premier League games. However, the 31-year-old says he does not need silverware to prove that he has recaptured his best form. “A trophy doesn’t show I have recovered and I am back,” he said. “It is more important for me to be part of the team and to feel I am helping it. “I am working hard. I am trying to be in the same form as I was before my injury. The fans can say whether I am or not. “That is the challenge for me. Winning trophies is about the team, not the individual.”

Infertility: An Ayurvedic Approach – A complete natural solution

A

yurvedic Medicine for infertility is based on a different approach. According Ayurvedic system, the reproductive tissue or shukra dhatu either in men or female is an end product of metabolic processes. Sukra Dhatu (tissue) is present in both men and women. In women, it denotes ovum, which is a part of menstrual cycle. While in men, it comes out as semen after being sexually stimulated. Finally, healthy Ovum in female and healthy sperm in males is completely depends on healthy metabolic processes involved. How can one should have healthy metabolic process is depends on Agni (Dhathwagni). It plays crucial role in coordinating and conducting “Rasa” between the all the seven tissues (Sapta dhatus: nutrient fluid to blood, muscle, fat, bone, bone marrow and finally to the shukra tissue) to form and healthy end product which is “Sukra”. There are many factors which influence the fertility, which include wide range of general health and lifestyle issues. Factors such as Smoking, excess caffeine intake, excess consumption of alcohol

21b

and drugs, other medical reasons such as previous cancer treatment, obesity, celiac syndrome (whether it is diagnosed or undiagnosed) and finally age related decline in natural fertility. According to Ayurvedic medicine, if we look for the underlying root cause among

all the above mentioned reasons, there is improper co ordination of “Rasa” due to sluggish metabolism, which influences the healthy production of “Sukra” (Healthy semen or Ovum). For example, it is predicted by many modern world researchers,

excess caffeine intake will cause either tubal block or mild to severe endometriosis. In case of Obesity, it is also predicted that excess adipose tissue will cause the production of excess oestrogen as a metabolic end product of Insulin resistance. For most of the above

mentioned reasons the root cause remains the same. As per the Ayurvedic medicine, it always very important to evaluate the root cause before treating the problem. The line of treatment in Ayurvedic medicine starts with the treatment of root cause, which is cleaning the part (Systemic location of DOSHA) of vitiated or imbalanced DOSHA. In this scenario, mostly pitta and Vata will be imbalanced, so It will be good idea to start with VIRECHANA KARMA (purgation treatment) and followed by VASTI (Medicated enema). Following to Shodhana Treatment (Panchakarma or detox treatment) the samana treatment follows. Samana treatment normally includes administration of Ayurvedic classical herbal preparation to stimulate the Dhatwagni (Fire), which indirectly, stimulates the metabolic process for the production of healthy sperm or Ovum. Try turmeric for supple skin

T

urmeric is a staple ingredient in most Indian cuisines. It has many therapeutic effects. While you might not think beyond sprinkling a little in a glass of warm milk to battle a cold, there’s much more to the innocuous turmeric than that. Indians have been using turmeric to beautify themselves since ages now. Here are just some reasons why you should be using turmeric as well: If you have an uneven skin tone and would do anything to get that perfect peaches and cream complexion, then turmeric’s what you need. Turmeric evens out the skin tone by reducing the traces of

pigmentation. Mix a little turmeric powder alongwith cucumber juice or lemon juice and apply on skin. Wash it off after 15 minutes. But remember to do this everyday to notice a significant change in your skin colour. Turmeric makes for an awesome body scrub. This is why most Indian brides used to smear a paste of turmeric and besan on their bodies before their wedding to get skin that is super smooth, baby soft and glowing. Application of turmeric and a little milk cream also makes the skin supple and improves its elasticity.

f a mother is exposed to stress during pregnancy, her placenta translates that experience to her fetus by altering levels of a protein that affects the developing brains of male and female offspring differently, according to a new study. These findings suggest one way in which maternalstress exposure may be linked to neurodevelopmental diseases such as autism and schizophrenia, which affect males more frequently or more severely than females.. “Most everything experienced by a woman during a pregnancy has to interact with the placenta in order to transmit to the fetus. Now we have a marker that appears to signal to the fetus that its mother has experienced stress,” said Tracy L. Bale, senior author on the paper and an associate professor in the Department of Animal Biology at Penn Vet. The study builds on previous work by Bale and her colleagues, which found that female mice exposed to stress during pregnancy gave birth to males who had heightened reactions to stress. Further research showed that the effect extended to the second generation: The sons of those male mice also had abnormal stress reactions. Meanwhile, human studies conducted by other researchers have shown that males born to women who experience stress in

female offspring, Bale’s team developed a mouse in which they could genetically control OGT’s expression. Comparing females with normal levels of placental OGT to females that had been manipulated to have half as much, the researchers observed changes in more than 370 genes in the offspring’s developing hypothalamus. Many of these genes are known to be involved in energy use, protein regulation and synapse formation, functions that are critical to neurological development.

In addition, Bale and colleagues found promising signs that these results translate to humans. They analyzed human placentas that had been discarded after the birth of male babies. No identifying information was associated with the tissue, but the researchers discovered that the male (XY) side of the placenta had reduced OGT expression compared to the maternal (XX) side, similar to this genes regulation in mouse placenta. Together, the results suggest that the OGT enzyme may

be acting to protect the brain during gestation but that males have less of this protective enzyme to begin with, placing them at an increased risk of abnormal neurodevelopment if their mother is stressed during pregnancy. If OGT’s status as a biomarker for exposure to prenatal stress and heightened risk for neurodevelopmental problems is confirmed in humans, Bale said it could help detect vulnerable individuals earlier in life than is currently possible.

Irregular beats spell higher risk of kidney failure

he risk of kidney failure is greater for people with chronic kidney disease (CKD), especially those suffering from atrial fibrillation - a common form of irregular heart beats in adults, says a study. The findings by the researchers at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), and Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research could open the way to new approaches, with improved outcomes for CKD patients. Those who suffer with CKD or end-stage renal disease commonly have atrial fibrillation and tend to have a stroke or to die. However, the long-term impact of atrial fibrillation on kidney function among CKD patients has been unknown, the journal Circulation reports. The new study involved 206,229 CKD patients who were drawn from members of Kaiser Permanente Northern California, a large integrated health care delivery system,

April 2013 Edition

according to an UCSF statement. Over the course of about five years, approximately 16,400 patients developed atrial fibrillation, and those who did were 67 percent more likely to progress to end-stage renal disease compared with patients who had CKD, but did not develop atrial fibrillation. “These novel findings expand on previous knowledge by highlighting that atrial fibrillation is linked to a worse kidney prognosis in patients with underlying kidney dysfunction,” said kidney specialist Nisha Bansal, assistant professor of Nephrology at UCSF. “There is a knowledge gap about the long-term impact of atrial fibrillation on the risk of adverse kidney-related outcomes in patients with chronic kidney disease,” said senior study co-author Alan S. Go, director of the Comprehensive Clinical Research Unit at the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research.

the first trimester of pregnancy are at an increased risk of developing schizophrenia. The Penn team hoped to find a biomarker that could account for these changes and risk factors. To be an effective signal of maternal stress, the researchers reasoned, a biomarker would need to show differences in expression between male and female offspring and would need to be different between stressed and unstressed mothers. They also wanted to find a marker that behaved similarly in humans. They went about their search by first exposing a group of female mice to mild stresses, such as fox odor or unfamiliar noises, during the first week of their pregnancies, a time period equivalent to the first trimester of a human pregnancy. Another group of pregnant mice was unexposed. In a genome-wide screen of the female’s placentas, one gene stood out as meeting the researchers’ criteria: Ogt, an X-linked gene that codes for the enzyme O-linked-Nacetylglucosamine transferase (OGT). Placentas from male offspring had lower levels of OGT than those from female offspring, and all placentas from stressed mothers had lower levels than placentas from their unstressed counterparts. To determine how placental exposure to reduced levels of OGT might differentially affect the brains of male and

In India, sex discrimination begins in womb China, Bangladesh and Pakistan, evidence of sex-discrimination in the womb existed. But in Sri Lanka, Thailand and Ghana - which are not considered maledominated - no such evidence existed. Lakdawala said that in India, while it’s illegal for a doctor to reveal the sex of an unborn baby or for a woman to have an abortion based on the baby’s sex, both practices are common. She said that but knowing the sex of the baby through an ultrasound also can lead to discrimination for those pregnancies that go full-term. “This type of discrimination we’re seeing, while not as severe as sex-selective abortion, is very important for children’s health and well-being,” Lakdawala said. Given that previous research has linked early childhood health to later outcomes, sex discrimination in prenatal care might also have long-term effects. “We know that children born at higher birth weights go to school for longer periods and have higher wages as adults, so the future implications here are pretty serious,” Lakdawala said. The study, titled “Discrimination begins in the womb: Evidence of sex-selective prenatal investments,” appears in the current issue of the Journal of Human Resources.

omen in India are more likely to get prenatal care when pregnant with boys, according to ground-breaking research that has implications for girls’ health and survival. The study by Leah Lakdawala of Michigan State University and Prashant Bharadwaj of the University of California, San Diego, suggests sex discrimination begins in the womb in male-dominated societies. “It paints a pretty dire picture of what’s happening,” Lakdawala, MSU assistant professor of economics, said. In studying the national healthsurvey data of more than 30,000 Indians, the researchers found that women pregnant with boys were more likely to go to prenatal medical appointments, take iron supplements, deliver the baby in a healthcare facility (as opposed to in the home) and receive tetanus shots. Tetanus is the leading cause of neonatal deaths in India. According to the study, children whose mothers had not received a tetanus vaccination were more likely to be born underweight or die shortly after birth. The researchers - the first to study sex discrimination in prenatal care - also looked at smaller data sets from other countries. In the patriarchal nations of

Whole grains, cereals, almonds, walnuts are very rich in Vitamin E, which makes our skin soft, smooth and supple. 5. In winter we don’t feel like drinking water but make it a point to drink loads of water as water flushes out toxins and maintains skin elasticity. 6. Avoid intake of excessive tea/coffee as it dehydrates the skin and blocks the absorption of nutrients making the skin look dull and dry. Instead consume green tea which is an excellent skin rejuvenator and antioxidant. 7. Exercise regularly as it improves blood flow throughout the body.
