GHANDI JI You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty. You must be the change you wish to see in the world. You can chain me, you can torture me, you can even destroy this body, but you will never imprison my mind. Where there is love there is life. Where love is, there God is also. When restraint and courtesy are added to strength, the latter becomes irresistible.

n yet another assault on a woman near a pub in Gurgaon, a 23-year-old mother was allegedly gangraped by seven men after being abducted from outside the Sahara Mall on M G Road at 2.30 am on Monday. The victim, who reportedly works in a pub at the mall, has alleged that the accused abducted her after stopping the radio taxi she and her 15-year-old brother had hired to return home to Badarpur. She said as soon as the Wyn cab left the mall, a Maruti 800 bearing the number (HR266458) forced it to stop. Five of the accused pulled her out of the cab and forced her into their car. The victim, who has a three-year-old son, said she was taken to a flat in Gurgaon and raped by seven men. She was later dumped outside the Chhatarpur Metro Station around 4.15am. In her complaint, the woman said she worked at a pub in Sahara Mall and was responsible for seating “arrangements” of customers during night shifts. She worked from 9pm to the “last show”. However, DCP (East) Maheshwar Dayal said she was not employed by the pub but worked as a “help” for single men enter the “couples only” pub. The cab driver told the police that he and the victim’s brother rushed to a Gurgaon police van stationed nearby. “However, when we told them of the incident, they merely

flashed a message and refused to move from their position. They asked us to approach the police station.” Not knowing what to do, the minor boy reached home and told his mother. The two then took the same cab back to Gurgaon to search for the victim. “It all happened in the wink of an eye. The Maruti car pulled up right in front of my car. I had slowed down as I was taking a Uturn. Five men came out while one remained in the seat. They put a hand on her mouth, dragged her inside the car and sped away in the wrong direction,’’ said Mehdi Hassan, the cab driver. Although the victim could not identify where she was taken, she has mentioned in her complaint that they crossed the Aya Nagar MCD toll booth on MG Road. The car’s registration number was probably not flashed in time. “The car crossed one checkpost and three pickets but was not stopped even once,’’ a cop said. Then girl finally called her mother from her mobile phone and her mother subsequently informed the Delhi Police. A team of Mehrauli police led by the DCP and the area ACP and SHO reached the spot. However, the Delhi Police insisted that it was not their case and decided to inform their Gurgaon counterparts. They also asked the mother-son duo to contact the Gurgaon police even after they

had noted their statements as well as that of the victim. A medical examination was conducted on the victim but the police are yet to access the reports. DCP Maheshwar Dayal said, “We have registered a case of gang rape and abduction at DLFII police station against seven unknown person under sections 366/ 376 (2) G IPC. Two police teams have been constituted to

search the accused.” The cops have taken the CCTV footage of the pub and the Sahara Mall for examination. The victim told the police that she suspected the role of a woman friend, who introduced her to the profession a month ago, in the assault. The two had a heated argument two days ago and, according to the victim, some of the accused were seen dancing with

her friend at a pub in Sahara Mall just before the incident. However, the woman denied these allegations during preliminary investigation. The city police seem to be caught in a crisis in identifying the owner of the Maruti car, since many files were destroyed in a recent fire at the regional transport office. They suspect documents related to the car too were lost in the fire.

200 million Indians have no TV, phone or radio One-sixth of the country, or 200 million Indians, don’t possess any of the most basic assets like a transistor or TV, phone, vehicle of any kind or a computer. In three states - Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and MP- close to a third of the households own none of these assets. On Tuesday, the registrar general of India released the final figures for the first phase of Census 2011, known as the Houselisting and Housing Census. The data shows how India lives - how many people to a house, how they light their houses and where they get their water from, and some of the things they own. The Census measures ownership of five assets - radio/transistors, television, telephone, computer and mode of transport. The proportion of households which own a radio has fallen, almost at the same rate at which the proportion of households with a TV has risen. Yet, there remains a stark difference between TV penetration in rural and urban India: Just one third of rural households own a TV set, while over 75% of urban households own one. TV penetration is highest in Delhi (88%), followed by Tamil Nadu (87%), Punjab, Chandigarh and Puducherry. Bihar has by far the lowest TV penetration of any state at just 15%.

March 2012 Edition

2011 is the first year that the Census is counting mobile and landline use separately, and the numbers show that telephony in India is overwhelmingly about mobile phones. While 63% of households owned a phone, 53% owned a mobile phone only and another 6% owned both a landline and a mobile phone. Over half of rural households and three-quarters of urban households now own a mobile phone. Here too, there’s considerable regional variation; east and northeast India have low telephone density, with Chhattisgarh and Orissa being the country’s worst. Delhi, Chandigarh, Goa, Lakshadweep and Kerala all have a tele-density close to 90% About 20% of urban households and 5% of rural households now own a computer or laptop. Internet penetration at the household level follows further behind just 1% of rural households own a computer with internet, and 8% of urban households. Chandigarh, Delhi and Goa are the only states or union territories with household internet penetration above 10%; it is under 1% in Bihar. Close to half of India owns no means of transport. Just 5% of households own a car, 21% own a two-wheeler and 45% own a bicycle (some would own more than one of these).

Lankan forces killed LTTE chief’s son in cold blood?

I

t is a chilling piece of footage that represents yet another blow for the beleaguered Sri Lankan governm-ent in its attempts to head off a critical resolution at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva this week. The short clip dates from the final hours of the bloody 26-year civil war between the government and the secessionist rebels of the Tamil Tigers, the LTTE. A 12-year-old boy lies on the ground, stripped to the waist and has five neat bullet holes in his chest. His name is Balachandran Prabakaran and he is the son of the LTTE leader, Velupillai Prabhakaran . Beside him lie the bodies of five men, believed to be his bodyguards. There are strips of cloth on the ground indicating that they were tied and blindfolded before they were shot - further evidence suggesting that the government forces had a systematic policy of executing many surrendering or captured LTTE fighters and leading figures, even if they were children. The footage - dating from 18 May 2009 and which seems to have been shot as a grotesque “trophy video” by Sri Lankan forces - will be broadcast for the first time on Wednesday night in a Channel 4 film, ‘Sri Lanka’s Killing Fields: War Crimes Unpunished’ - a sequel to the controversial investigation broadcast last year which accused both the LTTE and the government of war crimes and crimes against

humanity. Last year, a special panel appointed by the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon suggested that as many as 40,000 civilians died in the last few weeks of the war. The new evidence of the death of Balachandran will increase pressure on the Sri Lankan government. In addition to the footage of the boy’s dead body lying beside his slaughtered bodyguards, Channel 4 has obtained a series of highresolution stills of the scene. These have been analysed by a respected forensic pathologist, Derrick Pounder, to assess the cause of death. It is possible, he suggests, that the boy may have been made to watch the execution of his bound and blindfolded guards before the gun was turned on him. Pounder believes he has identified the first of the shots to be fired at the boy: “There is a speckling from propellant tattooing, indicating that the distance of the muzzle of the weapon to this boy’s chest was two to three feet or less. He could have reached out with his hand and touched the gun that killed him.” The High Commission of Sri Lanka rejected what it calls “malicious allegations” in the film. It said it had chosen to focus on: “A number of highly spurious and uncorroborated allegations and seek - entirely falsely - to implicate members of the Lankan government and senior military figures.”

Delhi Food & Nightlife Guide Awards 2012

Gurgaon, and some even from Noida and Faridabad. The winners are divided into ‘star category hotel restaurants’ and ‘standalone’, and also, we always have our eyes, ears, especially noses, open to sniff out new aromas, and like to honour the newcomers who show most promise - hence the ‘noteworthy newcomer’ awards. For instance, Megu, the new Japanese outlet at The Leela Palace, one of the exciting new outlets in the city, will be watched keenly in the future, as it is a serious contender and has shown a great deal of promise. The standalone restaurants do not have the backing of a star hotel, who have the money to hire the best - chefs, ambience and service. Thus, they are awarded separately by us to encourage such restaurants to grow. The star hotel restaurants get to take home their awards, while standalones win theirs. Every one’s represented at the Times Food and Nightlife Awards. The best in the food and beverage industry may have taken their awards for this year home, but this shouldn’t stop you from voting on www.timescity. com. Log on to the site, surf for your fave food joints and head to the most happening nightclubs around the city. And don’t forget to keep writing reviews on www. timescity.com. Your ratings will help decide next year’s winner!

he star-studded Times Food and Nightlife Awards 2012 awarded the best in various categories of cuisines and nightlife venues in Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida and Faridabad.

Once upon a time, Gurgaon was a Delhi suburb, but the Millennium City has come into its own, and people who live and work in Gurgaon don’t need to travel to Delhi every day. Gurgaon now, like Delhi, offers

great food and nightlife options in most categories, and so it was only fair that we select the best from both cities and present them separately. You’ll find that many of the important awards have winners from Delhi as well as

New tech to run ultra-fast Internet

L

ightning-quick Net speeds, more robust connections and a big increase in network capacity at little extra cost may now be possible, thanks to the ground-breaking fibre-optic technology, under a new project. The project, known as Sardana , involving a consortium of European universities and research institutes, has demonstrated speeds of up to 10 Gigabits per second (Gbps), around 2,000 times quicker than the fastest Internet speed today. Researchers also showed that such speeds can be achieved at relatively little extra cost using existing fibre infrastructure . Though still in the experimental stages, the fully optical technology would mark a giant leap forward in fibre network performance. “We are proposing a new access network architecture using fibre to the home that provides new functionalities and extended performance,” said Josep Prat, researcher in optical communications, Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya (UPC), Spain and the scientific coordinator of the project. According to some estimates , yearly global internet traffic will need to be measured in Zettabytes (one trillion Gigabytes) within the next three years, a four-fold increase from today and the data equivalent of all the movies ever made passing through operators’ networks every five minutes, according to a university statement. Streaming video from sites such as YouTube and Netflix will account for most of the traffic, alongside more widespread use of similarly bandwidth-demanding video conferencing and telepresence applications.

11 lakh households have no electricity 85% of rural India uses firewood as fuel. Barely one in every ten households in rural Bihar and two-thirds of houses in the state’s urban areas use electricity to light their houses, Census 2011 figures reveal. Just over half of rural India uses electricity as its main source of lighting, an increase of 12% over 2001. If that seems heartening, the data also shows that 43% of rural households still use kerosene to light their houses, implying that the kerosene subsidy may not be as pointless as some would suggest. In urban India , the spread of electricity is more complete , with 93% of households using electricity as their primary source of light. Perhaps the most depressing statistic on this count is that there are still 11 lakh households in India with no source of lighting whatsoever. That is a number slightly larger than the number of households using solar lighting. Data on the other major use of fuels, that is cooking, shows an even less

March 2012 Edition

modern picture, with over 85% of rural India still using firewood, crop residue or cow dung as its primary source of fuel for cooking. Even in urban India, the proportion of those using LPG is under twothirds. The proportion of families in urban India using kerosene for cooking has been reduced to almost a third of the 2001 figure over the last decade. But 20% of urban Indians too still use firewood for cooking. For urban and rural areas put together, the proportion of those using kerosene as the primary cooking fuel has come down from 6.5% to 2.9% over the last 10 years. In Bihar and Orissa, the spread of LPG lags far behind the rest of the country , with less than 10% of households in both states using LPG.

he crisis at Kingfisher Airlines worsened on Monday as pilots and other employees started a no-pay-nowork agitation, forcing the carrier to to cancel nearly 50 flights. This

Unpaid pilots force-land 50 Kingfisher flights

does not portend well for flyers as unpaid pilots of Air India (both domestic and international) have also decided to resort to a similar strike from April 1. If that happens, and the Kingfisher strike doesn’t

end by then, the availability of seats would further fall, leading to a steep rise in ticket prices. AI and Kingfisher together account for nearly one-third of all domestic flights.

A statement issued by Kingfisher on Monday said: “Kingfisher operated 145 flights (out of its highly truncated daily schedule of almost 200 flights)... All guests were notified in advance and

Large amounts paid to KG

preparations for ensuring that we operate at least 80% of our schedule were made.” The statement blamed the delay in paying salaries on freezing of Kingfisher’s accounts by the tax authorities. While passengers booked on Kingfisher in the coming days face uncertainty, the aviation ministry is watching the situation helplessly. Aviation ministry say it can do nothing more than ensuring the safety of flights. “We have not got any adverse report from the DGCA on Kingfisher’s safety aspect, nor has the Airports Authority of India said it could not accept any more nonpayment of daily cash-and-carry from the airline. Unless these two things happen or the airline’s fleet falls to below five aircraft, we cannot do anything,” said sources. Officials admitted that Kingfisher had not met the commitments made for airline’s recovery after the DGCA pointed out its financial mess last December. Authorities also said they could not single out Kingfisher for action on grounds of penury and failing to pay dues and salaries as AI was also guilty of the same things. Kingfisher employees’ resentment stems from reports that Kingfisher promoter Vijay Mallya had pumped in £20 million into his Formula One racing team, Force India.

F

ormer Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan’s tenure as chairman of National Human Rights Commission hit a bump on Monday when the government for the first time filed an investigation status report before the Supreme Court detailing large payments allegedly made to his two sonsin-law and brother when he was the CJI. A bench of Chief Justice S H Kapadia and Justice Swatanter Kumar was informed by attorney general G E Vahanvati that the income tax department’s probe had also revealed that the properties acquired by the sonsin-law and brother at this time were declared but prima facie appeared to be held benami and grossly undervalued. Regarding the large payments to Justice Balakrishnan’s son, the AG said, “Why were the

payments made? Is there a link to the payments? Income tax department cannot investigate why payments were made. This needs to be gone into at a different level.” This indicates that other agencies may be roped in to probe the charges against the ex-CJI. It also indicates that the government is not holding back its hand any longer on the controversy. When the controversy about the disproportionate assets of his relatives first appeared in the media, Justice Balakrishnan had told TOI that he had nothing to hide and if his relatives were in possession of unaccounted wealth, it was for them to answer the I-T department. The bench of Justices Kapadia and Kumar carefully stepped around counsel Prashant Bhushan’s plea for a direction to the Union government to send a presidential reference to

the apex court to inquire into the misconduct of the ex-CJI and give its opinion whether the former CJI should continue as the head of NHRC. Instead, the bench asked Vahanvati, “We only want to know what further step the government intends to take in this matter.” This might push Justice Balakrishnan into a tight spot, given the high degree of propriety attached to the position of NHRC chairman, even though it is only a statutory and not a constitutional post. The AG sought three weeks to respond to the question and said, “We may have to convene another meeting of all agencies on this issue.” At the beginning of the hearing, Vahanvati handed over a status report by the I-T department to the bench, which during the last hearing on two PILs filed by NGO Common Cause and advocate M L Sharma, sought details of every

investigation carried out by the agencies into the charges against the former CJI. When the bench asked about the status of other investigations, Vahanvati said, “The representations received in the Prime Minister’s Office were forwarded to the ministry of home affairs, which in turn were sent to the CBI.” However, the CBI appears to have not investigated the allegations because of the vagueness of the charges leveled in the representations. The bench adjourned hearing on the petitions for three weeks saying, “Let the AG take instructions on what steps the government is taking.” Attorney General G E Vahanvati on Monday raised questions before the Supreme Court about the large payments made to former CJI K G Balakrishnan’s relatives.

The government’s stand indicates that other agencies may be roped in to probe the charges against the ex-CJI. Americans should leave now, so we can live in peace: Afghans

T

he massacre of 16 villagers by a US soldier has triggered angry calls for an immediate American exit from Afghanistan as Washington tries to negotiate a long-term presence to keep the country from sliding into chaos again. Just days before Sunday’s attack, Kabul and Washington had made significant progress in negotiations on a Strategic Partnership Agreement that would allow American advisers and special forces to stay in Afghanistan after foreign combat troops leave at the end of 2014.

But securing a full deal may be far more difficult now after the shooting spree in villages in the southern province of Kandahar, the Taliban heartland, which killed mostly women and children. “This could delay the signing of the Strategic Partnership Agreement,” an Afghan government official told Reuters. The attack, the latest American public relations disaster in Afghanistan, may be a turning point for the United States in a costly and unpopular war now in its eleventh year. Afghanistan’s parliament

condemned the killings, saying Afghans had run out of patience with the actions of foreign forces and the lack of oversight. Popular fury over the killing spree, which brought demands that the United States withdraw earlier than scheduled, could be exploited by the Taliban to gain new recruits. “We have benefited little from the foreign troops here but lost everything - our lives, dignity and our country to them,” said Haji Najiq,” a Kandahar shop owner. “The explanation or apologies will not bring back the dead. It is better for them to leave us alone and let us

live in peace.” Anti-Americanism, which boiled over after copies of the Muslim holy book, the Quran, were inadvertently burned at a Nato base last month is likely to deepen after the Kandahar carnage. “The Americans said they will leave in 2014. They should leave now so we can live in peace,” said Mohammad Fahim, 19, a university student. “Even if the Taliban return to power our elders can work things out with them. The Americans are disrespectful.” The civilian deaths may also force Afghan President Hamid Karzai to harden his stand in the partnership talks to appease a public already critical of his government’s performance. The partnership agreement, which Washington and Kabul have been discussing for more than a year, will be the framework for US involvement in Afghanistan after foreign combat troops leave at the end of 2014. Without a pact that keeps US advisors or special forces here, there is a danger that civil war could erupt again in Afghanistan because ill-trained Afghan forces would be unable to keep insurgents at bay. The Kandahar violence came just days after the United States and Afghanistan signed a deal on the gradual transfer of a major US-run detention centre to Afghan

authorities, overcoming one of the main sticking points in the partnership negotiations. “The Americans are not here to assist us they are here to kill us,” said Najibullah, 33, a house painter in Kabul. “I hate the Americans and I hate anyone who loves them, so I hope there is no longterm partnership between our countries.” Afghanistan wants a timeline to take over detention centers and for the United States and Nato to agree to end night raids on Afghan homes as preconditions for signing the pact. Civilian deaths are one of the main sources of tension between Kabul and Washington. US officials warned of possible reprisal attacks after the villagers were killed in the likely “rogue” shooting. Washington has rushed to distance the shootings from the efforts of the 90,000-strong US force but faces growing criticism at home and abroad about its conduct of the war. “The US Embassy in Kabul alerts US citizens in Afghanistan that as a result of a tragic shooting incident in Kandahar province involving a US service member, there is a risk of anti-American feelings and protests in coming days, especially in the eastern and southern provinces,” the embassy said in an emergency statement on its website. India to set up Crude Oil network in Central Asia via Iran

I

ndia is making a concerted push into Central Asia by taking charge of a crucial transportation network through Iran into the region and beyond. After getting an enthusiastic thumbs up from 14 stakeholder countries in the region in January, experts from all the countries will meet in New Delhi on March 29 to put final touches to the project known as the International North-South Corridor. The project envisages a multimodal transportation network that connects ports on India’s west coast to Bandar Abbas in Iran, then overland to Bandar Anzali port on the Caspian Sea; thence through

Rasht and Astara on the Azerbaijan border onwards to Kazakhstan, and further onwards towards Russia. Once complete, this would connect Europe and Asia in a unique way -- experts estimate the distance could be covered in 25-30 days in what currently takes 45-60 days through the Suez Canal. In the January meeting, Sanjay Singh (secretary east, MEA) and Rahul Khullar (commerce secretary) told Iran that India would take charge of the project, including building the missing sections of the railway and road link in Iran. Thanks to US sanctions on Iran’s oil sector, India is finding it difficult to pay for

its oil imports with hard currency. One of the best ways of paying for Iranian oil is through infrastructure projects like the corridor, which serves economic and strategic interests of all states concerned. This has been a win-win proposition for India since the North-South Corridor agreement was signed between India, Iran and Russia in September 2000. But over the years, the project fell into disuse. Iran made little attempt to complete construction on its side, expending little political or administrative energy. Neither did Russia or India, which preferred to talk about it but did little to push

it. Meanwhile, 11 other countries, including all the Central Asian states, joined up. Several recent developments have changed India’s timid approach. First, China has been building an extensive road and railway network through Central Asia, aiming to touch Europe. It’s fast, efficient and already on the ground. While this has made Central Asia accessible to China and others, it is worrying these countries no end. Over the past few years, Central Asian states have repeatedly approached India to play the balancing role. Nursultan Nazarbayev of Kazakhstan actually gave an oil block, Satpaev, to India on strategic considerations. Second, with Pakistan in a state of almost chronic instability, India can never hope to access Central Asia through Pakistan. Its best bet remains Iran. While India will have to reduce oil imports from Iran, building a big-ticket infrastructure corridor is a reaffirmation of its commitment to the relationship. Meena Singh Roy, senior fellow at IDSA, who is closely connected with the project, said, “The potential of this corridor will be manifold with India, Myanmar and Thailand getting linked by road. This will boost trade between Europe and South East Asia as well.” The North-South Corridor, which can be described as part of the “new great game”, is now a battle for “power, hegemony, profits and resources”, as a senior official put it. Quite apart from opening up new

Supa Cheap Travel

Licence No 32885

markets for India, the corridor could also be used to transport energy resources to India -- from oil, gas to uranium and other industrial metals. In the forthcoming expert-level meetings in Delhi, Indian officials expect to finalize issues of customs and other commercial infrastructure. India has now agreed to provide all this expertise. Simultaneously, India is eyeing two other transit and transportation networks from Central Asia -- all of them going through Iran. One is a Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan Corridor -- a 677-km railway line connecting these countries with Iran and the Persian Gulf. It will link Uzen in Kazakhstan with GyzylgayaBereket-Etrek in Turkmenistan and end at Gorgan in Iran’s Golestan province. The second comes in from Uzbekistan through northern Afghanistan, known as the Northern Distribution Network through which the US and NATO currently route 70% of their supplies for the ISAF forces. But after the US and NATO exit Afghanistan in 2014, India plans to extend this route to link up with the Zaranj-Delaram road that enters Iran. India has been pushing Iran to complete construction of the Chahbahar port, which is crucial for these corridors to work to India’s advantage. Iran has been notoriously slow in taking these up but India expects that in its current isolation, Iran could do a rethink.

Govt uses special powers to slash cancer drug price by 97%

The government has cleared the application of Natco Pharma to sell generic drug Nexavar at Rs 8,880 for a 120-capsule pack for a month’s therapy. Bayer offers it for over Rs 2.8 lakh.

In a landmark decision that could set a precedent on how lifesaving drugs under patents can be made affordable, the government has allowed a domestic company, Natco Pharma, to manufacture a copycat version of Bayer’s patented anti-cancer drug, Nexavar, bringing down its price by 97%. In the first-ever case of compulsory licencing approval, the Indian Patent Office on

Monday cleared the application of Hyderabad’s Natco Pharma to sell generic drug Nexavar, used for renal and liver cancer, at Rs 8,880 (around $175) for a 120-capsule pack for a month’s therapy. Bayer offers it for over Rs 2.8 lakh (roughly $5,500) per 120 capsule. The order provides hope for patients who cannot afford these drugs. The approval paves the way for the launch of Natco’s drug in the

market, a company official told TOI, adding that it will pay a 6% royalty on net sales every quarter to Bayer. The licence will be valid till such time the drug’s patent is valid, i.e. 2020. As per the CL (compulsory licence) order, Natco is also committed to donating free supplies of the medicines to 600 patients each year. Bayer said it was “disappointed” and would “evaluate options to defend intellectual property rights”

in the country. In July 2011, Natco had applied for the CL in the Mumbai patent office to make Sorafenib Tosylate for which Bayer has a patent in the country since 2008. Under Section 84, a compulsory licence to manufacture a drug can be issued after three years of the grant of patent on the product, which is not available at an affordable price. Under the World Trade Organisation TRIPS Agreement, compulsory licences are legally-recognized means to overcome barriers in accessing affordable medicines. This is the first time in the history of the Indian Patents Act, 1970, that the provision under Section 84 has been invoked. The patent office acted on the basis that not only had Bayer failed to price the drug at a level that made it accessible and affordable, it also was unable to ensure that the medicine was available in sufficient quantities within India. Controller general of patents, P H Kurian, based his decision on Bayer’s admission that only 2% of kidney and liver cancer patients were able to access the drug, and its pricing (Rs 2.8 lakh for a month) did not constitute a “reasonably affordable” price. Since 2005, domestic drug

manufacturers have faced formidable barriers in the manufacture of patented drugs, and this has been remedied by the compulsory licensing provision to prevent patent holders from having a monopoly over certain essential medicines. Interestingly, generic manufacturer Cipla has already launched generic Nexavar (Sorafenib Tosylate) at around Rs 28,000 per 120-capsule pack, and is embroiled in a dispute with Bayer in the Delhi high court. Economist and intellectual property expert James Love said, “The Bayer price of Rs 34,11,898 per year ($69,000) is more than 41 times the projected average per capita income for India in 2012, shattering any measure of affordability. Bayer tried to justify its high price by making claims of high R&D costs, but refused to provide any details of its actual outlays on the research for Sorafenib, a cancer drug that was partly subsidized by the US Orphan Drug tax credit, and jointly developed with Onyx Pharmaceuticals. Bayer has made billions from Sorafenib, and made little effort to sell the product in India where its price is far beyond the means of all but a few persons.”

Leopard strays into CRPF camp in Guwahati informed the forest department. Forest department employees tranquilised the feline animal and took it away to the Assam State Zoo here. Incidents of leopard straying into human habitats in the state has registered a significant increase in the past two months

with more than 20 cases of leopard attacks reported so far. The encroachment of forest areas for human habitations was reducing the leopards habitats leading to the man-animal conflict and forcing the animals to come out in search of food, environment groups pointed out.

Greenland ice most vulnerable to global warming, says study

T

he Greenland ice sheet appears more vulnerable to global warming than previously thought, as a small increase in temperature could melt it completely and lead to a catastrophic sea-level rise, claims

a new study. The ice sheet may lose its ability to grow once global warming reaches 1.6 degrees above the pre-industrial levels , said the study published in Nature Climate Change.

Earlier research put that threshold a little higher, with a best estimate of 3.1 degrees . To put these numbers in perspective, climate scientists said the Earth’s surface has already warmed by more than 0.7 degrees since

the Industrial Revolution, when humans began pumping out large amounts of greenhouse gases. According to researchers , the Greenland ice sheet matters because the ice it contains would substantially raise sea levels if it

melted, LiveScience reported. Antarctica, too, is covered in ice and could also become a major source of sealevel rise. Warming is also expected to melt other pockets of ice around the world and to raise sea levels, the experts warned.

Salman challenged by three franchise movies?

I

f all goes as per plan, Bollywood would pretty much be creating a record of maximum number of sequels/franchises/prequels releasing this

winter. At last count, as many as four such films are slated for release in the last five weeks of the year. With more films already in production, this number

may well go up. The man seeing all such competition building around himself? Salman Khan. “First sequel to be announced for winter release was of course

Salman Khan’s Dabangg 2, shooting of which is starting this month. However, slowly but steadily, many other films have stepped in the fray as well. These are Race 2, Aashiqui 2 and the newest entrant Shootout At Wadala. There are going to be a lot of ‘familiar’ films that audience would be exposed to this winter”, says an industry insider. Traditionally last quarter of the year is considered to be the most lucrative period for Bollywood due to the holiday season that kick starts with Diwali. Now it is obvious that Bollywood is betting its money on those films that enjoy a good track record. The fact that these are star studded affairs only makes them the first choice for all involved. “Salman is at his career peak and life should come back full circle for Dabangg 2. Obviously it is the hottest film of the year and would be just perfect for the cold season. On the other hand, with Deepika returning to Race 2, the film has regained its star value. Since the prequel was much appreciated, stocks are high for Race 2, especially with Saif, Anil Kapoor, John Abraham and Jacqueline leading from the front”, a trade veteran adds. Meanwhile Bhatts’ franchise Aashiqui 2 is touted to be the biggest musical of the year. Even

though its cast is yet to be finalized, work has already begun on its music. A source from the production house informs, “Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt know that they have a huge challenge to do something that matches up to Nadeem-Shravan’s score in Aashiqui that was composed 20 years back. They have to match it at the least, if not better it.” However, the one which has arrived all of a sudden and is now carrying a burden of huge expectations is Sanjay Gupta’s comeback affair Shootout at Wadala. A prequel to Shootout At Lokhandwala, the film’s huge cast led by Anil Kapoor, John Abraham and Kangna Ranaut has just been announced. “Just like Yash Chopra, even Ekta is very particular about her announcements. Now that she has declared her intentions to release the film in December, Sanjay too is working backwards to make this happen”, adds an insider, “The film is arriving in between Race 2 and Dabangg 2 but the makers aren’t deterred with the competition.” Good for the audience who are all set to enjoy this quartet of sequels/prequel/franchise that are all set to gain further hype as the year progresses. Guess how Salman is thinking about this though.

Music Agent Review : Vinod

AV

EXPECTATIONS You expect a riveting soundtrack in Agent Vinod. Due to its genre that encapsulates thrills and action elements, the film presumably has stage set for the kind of soundtrack that one had heard (and immensely enjoyed) in films like Cash, Dus or Blue, to name a few. With Pritam at the helm of affairs this time around and Amitabh Bhattacharya handling lyrics, Agent Vinod makes one look forward to an adrenalin pumping score. MUSIC First to arrive is ‘I’ll Do The Talking Tonight’ which is actually an uncharacteristic start of an album. Though one wasn’t expecting a romantic number to kick-start the proceedings, a situational/item number like this does come as a surprise. Nevertheless, the song races by soon after as Neeraj Shridhar and Aditi Singh Sharma lead from the front with Shefali Alvaris and Barbie Amod joining in as well. A fusion mix of a popular Russian tune with Western arrangements and Pritam’s styling (which is most apparent in the way Neeraj goes about singing this one), ‘I’ll Do The Talking Tonight’ is a decent start though not extraordinary. The ‘remix version’ that follows expectedly pumps up the jam and as one hears it repeatedly; you do get a slight hint Sonu Nighm

March 2012 Edition

of ‘Music Band Na Karo’ [Hum Tum Shabana] . It isn’t surprising though since Sachin-Jigar were once assistants with Pritam and hence similarities can be expected to seep in. It is time for the most hyped number of the album, ‘Dil Mera Muft Ka’, to arrive next. A ‘mujra’ track that has been in news for over six months now, it is finally unleashed with the kind of characteristic sound that one associates with this genre. However the song takes volte-face in one minute flat with a club sound holding prevalence and the ‘mujra’ losing its relevance sooner than one could have actually classified it as one. In fact it won’t be wrong to say that the song (with Muazzam, Rizwan, Shadab Faridi, Altamush Faridi, Shabab Sabri as the add-on vocalists) is more in a ‘Munni’/’Sheela’ mood than an Umrao Jaan one was looking for here. Nevertheless, coming back to the song for what it is, ‘Dil Mera Muft Ka’ (which has Neelesh Misra as the guest lyricist) doesn’t quite come close to the hype that was build around it and just about manages to pass muster. What is also noticeable is the fact that Nandini Srikar’s voice is just not the right fit for Kareena Kapoor and seems out of place here. Yes, she sings well and also demonstrates a

good range (after being terrific in ‘Bhare Naina’ (Ra.One) last year but in case of ‘Dil Mera Muft Ka’, it is a case of mismatch. Thankfully the ‘remix version’ (surprisingly) is more ‘desi’ with Malini Avasthi sounding further authentic. Also, the kind of arrangements that one hears here makes one strongly feel that perhaps the tagging of ‘remix’ was exchanged here and the earlier version could have been rather termed as one. Soon Pritam does come on his own with ‘Raabta (Siyaah Raatein)’ which is clearly the best track that one has heard

in the album so far. Just the kind of sound that one associates with the composer, ‘Raabta’ is a beautiful melody that may have more suited an Imtiaz Ali film but is still a welcome inclusion in Agent Vinod even if it is nowhere near to being adrenalin pumping. Thank goodness for that though since after ‘I’ll Do The Talking Tonight’ and ‘Dil Mera Muft Ka’ one was looking for some ‘thehrav’ and that comes in good abundance with ‘Rabta’. The song arrives in as many as four versions and one doesn’t mind that one bit as it manages to hook you on

every time it appears. While Aditi Singh Sharma (in an altogether different avtar from ‘I’ll Do The Talking Tonight’) leads from the front for the ‘Raabta (Night In A Motel)’ version, it is Arijit Singh who does well for the male version ‘Arijit Singh’. Later he also joins Shreya Ghoshal for the final version ‘Raabta (Kehte Hain Khuda Ne)’ which does well as a round up version. Special mention for lyricist Amitabh Bhattacharya who indeed ends up getting something new to cheer about and demonstrates once again that he has a good knack of playing around with words.

stead, it offered the same strength in a thinner package. Apple, who worships at the altar of lightness and thinness, wouldn’t pass up the

opportunity to use the new material — especially since Apple already uses Gorilla Glass in the iPhone. In addition to the larger screen

and thinner design, frequent iPhone 5 rumors include LTE, an NFC chip, and (less likely) the removal of the home button. It’s commonly

he next couple of weeks are going to belong to the iPad. It’s a given: it will be announced on Wednesday, will release (probably) a week or two later, and, in between, it will be talked about incessantly. However, there is another Apple device that’s capable of stealing a few headlines. Yes, iPhone 5 rumors are still coming. The latest rumor claims to debunk much of the accepted line of thinking about the iPhone 5. Though many have been expecting to see an iPhone with an aluminum back (see our conceptualized iPhone 5), iLounge reports that the next iPhone will instead have either a glass or ceramic back. If Apple went with a glass back for the next iPhone, then the design would probably look similar to the iPhone 4/4S. Even if it were thinner, more widely-proportioned, and had a larger screen, there are only so many ways that you can sandwich two pieces of glass together. The back wouldn’t likely be rounded (that would make it highly prone to scratches and breaks), so we’d probably see two flat pieces of Gorilla Glass again held together by a stainless steel antenna. That Gorilla Glass could be the key to making the next iPhone thinner. When Corning announced Gorilla Glass 2 at CES, the company made it clear that it wasn’t stronger than standard Gorilla Glass; in-

Mercedes create near invisible car using LEDs T

he emission free car is still a vehicle of the future, as even with the introduction of electric cars there’s still emissions produced in manufacturing and ultimately recycling the batteries they contain. However, car manufacturers have to be forwardthinking and experimental, and Mercedes is one of the best at trying out future tech. Since 2002 the company has

March 2012 Edition

been manufacturing a hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle, called the F-Cell, in very limited quantities. The original was based on an A-Class and only had a range of 160km, but the second-generation F-Cell was based on a B-Class and can travel 402km. Impressive, but just as impressive is how Mercedes decided to advertise this zero-emission F-Cell vehicle. Mercedes decided that zero

emission is zero impact on the environment, so it’s as if the car isn’t even there. With that in mind, they opted to make the F-Cell invisible as it traveled down the street making heads turn. How do you make a car invisible? With lots of LEDs and a camera. The video above shows how one side of the F-Cell was covered with LEDs to form a display. On the other side of the car a camera sys-

tem was mounted which captured the required image to output to the screen. The end result is actually quite impressive. While the car isn’t completely invisible, you are just seeing a moving outline because the LED screen is projecting what’s behind it. The effect works best when the scenery behind is uniform, e.g. while crossing the bridge in the video, and at night when there’s

more contrast between light and dark. Putting a reactive layer over an object seems to be the best way to hide it at the moment. BAE Systems demonstrated a similar technique with its thermal invisibility cloak. For those wanting something a little simpler you could actually do at home, then look no further than Ben Heck’s Portal shirt.

echnology analyst firm Gartner’s top researcher in India sees strong demand for IT services from the country in 2012, but warned that less than bullish comments from service providers, brokerages and Nasscom could contribute to the overall sentimental weakness and eventually prove counter-productive for growth. Gartner’s top analyst in the country, Partha Iyengar, said the gap between what it expects and what the industry is projecting has only widened with Nasscom’s lower growth estimates for software exports in the com-

ing fiscal. As compared to a 16% plus growth software exports are likely to clock in FY12, Nasscom, India’s apex software industry body, has projected only 11%14% growth in FY13. Iyengar said he was puzzled by the widening gap between the two. Nearly all the top service providers have warned of weakness in demand. “The global economy, driven by slower growth in developed markets coupled with the European crisis, could impact the growth of the IT industry,” said SD Shibulal, CEO and managing director of the country’s second largest software exporter, Info-

sys. Similarly, TCS CEO and MD, N Chandrasekaran, said the company was seeing delay in closure of discretionary projects. The top 5-8 companies had a revenue growth in the range of 19-25%. That doesn’t go with what is being projected,” Iyengar said, adding that in one-on-one conversations, service providers were still fairly bullish. If the goal is to keep market expectations low, Iyengar warned that it could turn out to be counter-productive for the companies’ growth. “It might give an impression to prospective customers that they are in buttondown mode and may stop making new investments,” he said. Iyengar, who holds the title of vice-president and distinguished analyst in Gartner’s executive leadership research team, has 17 years of experience in tracking offshore services. “Cognizant’s best ever quarter was in the height of recession,” he pointed out. The key factor determining the growth of an organisation in such an environment was management vision around sales and marketing and how it positioned itself from a global sourcing perspective. Till two years ago, the company’s performance was in line the industry’s overall performance but now there is a separation between them, Iyengar said, adding that sales and marketing would be the biggest performance differentiator between companies that do well and those that don’t.

new lawsuit claims Google and Apple have infringed a patent by using the Street View feature in Google Maps. In a lawsuit filed last week in the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida, Floridabased PanoMap Technologies accuses Google and Apple for infringing on its patent covering the the 3D panorama mode found in the Google Maps app on the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. The lawsuit (pdf), picked up by PaidContent, says both companies knowingly infringed on U.S. Patent No. 6,563,529, issued to developer Jerry Jongerius in mid-2003. That patent covers an “interactive system for displaying detailed view and direction in panoramic images.” In the suit,

that’s described as the Street View feature, the one that lets users see 3D imagery of the street, as captured through Google’s Street View camera system. PanoMap Technologies, which does not have a Web site, claims both companies were aware of its patent ahead of infringing on it, with Google going so far as to include it alongside related patent filings. In its suit, PanoMap says Google listed PanoMap’s ‘529 patent as prior art when applying for two of its own patents covering its Street View technology. As for Apple, PanoMap says the company accessed Duckware.com, a business run by Jongerius that both shows off and licenses a panoramic image viewer program called PMVR, on July 8, 2007.

Coming back to their wedding, Aamir and Sanjeeda held their cocktail party 2 days before their wedding, where many known faces from the industry like Ekta kapoor, Ragini Khanna, Karishma Tanna, Jay Bhanushali, Mahhi Vij, Mithun Chakraborty,Mouni Roy,Kavita Kaushik, Bhagyashree, Rohit Roy, Mansi Roy, Jay Soni , Punit Malhotra, Manjari Phadnis,Drashti Dhami, Karan Singh Grover, Jen-

And finally on the 2nd of March, 2012, both Aamir and Sanjeeda whispered the words ‘Qabul Hain’ to each other and got together for the rest of their lives. Dressed in a beautiful green and silver lacha, Sanjeeda looked the perfect bride, while groom Aamir wore a formal bandhgala for the occasion. Friends Mouni Roy and Amna Sharif essayed the bridesmaids in the wedding while close friends Shabbir Ahluwalia along with his wife Priyanka, Kanchi Kaul and Bollywood stars like Sohail Khan graced the wedding ceremony. erala, a state in Southern India is known as a tropical paradise of waving palms and wide sandy beaches. It is a narrow strip of coastal territory that slopes down the Western Ghats in a cascade of lush green vegetation, and reaches to the Arabian sea. Kerala borders the states of Tamil Nadu to the east and Karnataka to the north. It is also known for its backwaters, mountains, coconuts, spices and art forms like Kathakali and Mohini Attam. It is the most literate state in India, and a land of diverse re-

ligions, where you can find Hindu temples, mosques, churches, and even synagogues. With world class tourist sporting options, ayurvedic spas and treatments, eco-tourism initiatives, a large number of visit options ranging from beautiful high altitude blue mountains to pristine rain forests to golden sun-sand beaches and an enormous range of accommodation, Kerala has much to offer the visitor. The tourism department of Kerala boasts that the state is God’s Own Country. Once you visit, you will see where this claim comes from. The state really is blessed with great natural beauty, and diverse ecology. The state is also considered to be one of the safest regions of India. Incidents of local people cheating tourists are almost non-existent. Kerala has high standards of living compared to its neighbours and other Indian states and has social lifestyle indices such as education and healthcare that are on par with developed countries. Therefore tourists can relax without being followed around by taxi drivers, touts, guides and similar. However still be prepared to put up with beggars who have migrated from poorer neighbouring states. Abundant rainfall means that you can find lush greenery that remains pretty much throughout the year. A holiday here is an opportunity for rejuvenation. You can get an Ayurvedic oil massage, spend a day or two on a houseboat with nothing to do but watch palm trees pass by, or just laze around on Kovalam or Varkala beaches. Thus tourism is more experiential here, rather than being composed of superficial sightseeing options. Kerala was named as one of the “ten paradises of the world” and “50 places of a lifetime” by the National Geographic Traveler magazine. Kerala is a state wedged between the Western Ghats on the eastern side and the Arabian Sea on the West, thus having a wide range of topography from high altitude mountains to golden beaches

and is criss crossed by 41 rivers. The tributaries, unique backwaters, lagoons and numerous small islands provide many scenic attractions for visitors.

Culture

Unique to Kerala, the Malayalee culture is derived from ancient Tamil-Dravidian practices combined with Arya-Indian culture, with influences from China, Japan, Arab countries, Portugal, Holland and even from the British. There are a lot of Tamil-Sanskrit elements, resulting in many unique practices and customs. The Malayalee culture is matriarchal; thus, women enjoy special status in the society. The Buddhist influence brought Ayurveda into a prominent position as well as Kalaripayattu (Kerala’s traditional martial art). Kerala architecture has lot of Tibetan-Chinese influence, due to its seclusion from other parts of India when the Western Ghats prevented Tamil influences. Most of the buildings have gabled, tiled roofs and a heavy use of wood with prominent slanting windows and ornamental flora designs. The Sree Padmanabhapuram Palace near Trivandrum, is a classic example of this style.

ised movement, particularly eye expressions. Some parts of the stories are expressed only using the eyes. There are more than 14 to 15 various Dance forms, all indigenous to Kerala. A detailed check with locals or web search, may help you to identify some others.

Beaches

The world famous Kovalam beach, well known for fun and frolic Kerala has 650 km of coastline and numerous beaches. Some of the more notable are:

23a

Kozhikode Beach is where Vasco da Gama first landed in India, marking the start of European colonisation and the Age of Discovery. Muzhappilangadu near Kannur A long drive in beach in Kannur district with lush greenery around. This beach has a naturally clean and closely packed sand which makes it drivable. Beach is very long 4-5 km and is a pleasant place to spend time. Lots of adventure activities like para gliding/ para sailing etc. are arranged in this beach regularly.

Dance

Kathakali, the lone Indian classical dance drama, originated from Kerala. Mohiniyattom: This classical artform of Kerala is a subtle and graceful dance performed by women in traditional costume. Most of the themes are poems, unlike other classical dances which have an emphasis on Hindu mythology. Koodiyattom.: An ancient form of theatre with a legacy of more than 2,000 years. This is very stylised Sanskrit theatre and recognised by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Most of the characters are noted for Sanskrit recitations and highly styl-

Kovalam Beach near Trivandrum has a good bathing area, clean environment and plenty of accommodation. This was a centre of Hippy counter-culture in sixties, and is today well known for hedonistic beach parties. Varkala Beach in Thiruvananthapuram district - A long cliff makes the beach more natural (no restaurant behind you). It is long beach with natural springs from the cliff. Cherai Beach near Kochi city has a large sand beach.

n behalf of all Rotarians, Partners, Families and Friends of Rotary in District 9800, I’d like to extend a very warm Australian Welcome to Team Leader Dr Vaijayanti Padhye and her Team ( Asif, Mugdha, Pawan and Sonal ) from District 3030 in Mahararastra State, India. This is the first GSE program with India since 1988 and although we have very different cultures, we are all bound together by the common values of Rotary; Service, Fellowship, Diversity, Integrity and Leadership. Rotary beganin Chicago USA on February 23 1905 and the GSE Team from

T

he Group Study Exchange (GSE) program of The Rotary Foundation is a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for young business and professional men and women between the ages of 25 and 40 and in the early years of their professional lives. The program provides travel grants for teams to exchange visits between paired areas in different countries. For four to six weeks, team members experience the host country’s institutions and ways of life, observe their own vocations as practiced abroad, develop personal and professional relationships, and exchange ideas.

India arrives on February 26 2012, just 4 days after Rotary’s 107th Birthday. Rotary started in India in early 1920 and in Australia here in Melbourne on April 21 1921 so we celebrate 91 years of Rotary in this country at that time and 92 years in India. We get together from March 9 to 11 at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre to celebrate the 80th Conference of D9800; it is therefore appropriate that our Theme for the Conference is “Celebrate the Past; Commit to the Future.” The main vocational interest of the D3030 GSE team centres around health and wellbeing, engineering and education so a wide and varied vocational

visit program is promised. We have much to learn from our Indian GSE Team members. I understand D3030 lies in the state of Maharashtra in India and extends from Nasik in the western extremity to Bhandara in the east, nearly 700 km across. D3030 has 81 Clubs and nearly 3,200 Rotarians. Our District extends around 270km from Brighton in the south to Echuca-Moama in the north with 69 Clubs and nearly 2,700 members. D9800 Team Leader Dr Murray Verso and his Team members; Del, Jim, Lizz and Mel- have just completed their Exchange with D3030 and have filled their Facebook Page with many fascinating

stories and superb photographs. Click on www.facebook.com/ rotaryd9800gse and you will see what I mean or just check the District Website. Welcome again and may you have a very safe, happy , enjoyable and enriching time as part of the wonderful Group Study Exchange Program. We all look forward to learning more about the world’s largest democracy and showing you why we are so proud of D9800, where “City meets Country” with Australia’s second largest city and some of the finest country towns and communities.

Rotary International records that the GSE program began in 1955 as the idea of a New Zealand district. Originally known as the Rotary Overseas Travel Award (ROTA), it was adopted by the Trustees as an official educational program in 1965. As at the end of the 2003/2004 Rotary year, an estimated 54,000 participants have been involved in the program worldwide. A GSE team consists of up to six non-Rotarian business or professional people and a Rotarian team leader. Individuals who participate in this once-in-a-lifetime experience will return home not only with new perspectives and an enriched

vision, but with fresh ideas and an understanding of a nation’s culture, commerce and Government that can be invaluable to their future. For each team member, The Rotary Foundation provides the most economical round-trip air ticket between the home and host countries. Local Rotarians in the host area provide for meals, lodging, and group travel within their district. It has been said - “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has”. Past GSE team members

have commented on their experience: “This trip has opened my eyes to the full scope of our world and has taught me to think more globally”. “The GSE also opened my eyes to what Rotary Clubs do in their respective communities. Although each Club has a different focus or way of doing things, they all have the same honourable objective”. “We saw the culture, social values and history of another country through the eyes of our Rotary hosts, as we lived their lives with them for five weeks. This was an experience that will remain with me forever and has formed permanent friendships for me”.

Keith Ryall Governor; District 9800. 2011-2012

Did our District found Rotary’s Group Study Exchange program?

T

here is some controversy as to the origins of the GSE program , the Centenary History of Rotary gives the official credit to New Zealand with their ROTA program which were introduced in 1955 to celebrate Rotary’s Jubilee. These were two month study tours by teams of six young professional and business men and a Rotarian leader. Visits in odd numbered years were to the UK and the

USA, but the programme was simply a friendship tour similar to the current friendship exchanges, without a formal study component. It is however hard to dispute the claim from the Rotary Club of Melbourne that the team led by the late PDG Frank Newman in 1963 to Papua New Guinea was the genesis of what we now know as the Group Study program, that commenced in 1965. In John Thompson’s history of the Rotary

Club of Melbourne it states “The club project for 1962-63 was a most interesting and valued one –namely “Papua-New Guinea Study Visit” the objectives were to develop Rotary fellowship with the 5 Rotary clubs in the area and to give the Study Team the opportunity to meet people of Papua New Guinea and to study their life, activities and aspirations. The five members of the team under the leadership

of Frank Newman were away 5 weeks. The ages of the team ranged from 24 to 28, three were from the metropolitan area of Melbourne and two were from country areas. Their vocations were a shop-fitting Production Manager , an Agricultural reporter for the ABC, an IR officer for Mobil Oil, a sheep and cattle farmer from Gippsland, and an engineer/acoustic consultant.

So aggressive is he about this ‘mission’, that he has even declared that he wants every child to have access to schools and private classes teaching martial arts and until that happens; he won’t call it a day. Readers maybe aware that last year, he was busy with his incessant efforts of talking with many government bodies of various states to include karate, judo, kung fu and other such fighting styles in school and college curriculum. This resulted in Gujarat’s Chief Minister Narendra Modi agreeing to make martial arts a mandatory subject in state’s schools. nce a princess always a princess. This could well be the adage for Zareen Khan (yes, that’s the way she is spelled now, and not Zarine Khan) who has gained an entry into a period drama all over again. After being seen as the princess who fell in love with the ‘veer’ Salman Khan, she is now going further back in time with yet another assignment which is on the similar lines. “Yes, she is playing a princess all over

again. This would be for the Tamil film called Karikalan. It is a step in the right direction for her as this one is a biggie with a multicrore budget. Also, she is the leading lady opposite Tamil superstar Vikram who was seen as Ram in the Hindi version of Mani Ratnam’s Raavan. She has already finished one schedule of this film and would soon be resuming shoot after the release of Housefull 2”, informs a close friend of Zareen.

Sonu Sood to play Dawood in Shootout At Wadala

S

anjay Gupta’s Shootout At Wadala seems to be getting bigger by the day. The film which already stars heavyweights like Anil Kapoor, John Abraham and Manoj Bajpayee now has yet another addition to its cast. Sonu Sood, who impressed one and all with his act in Dabangg, has been signed to play the character of dreaded don Dawood Ibrahim in the film. Confirming the news, Sonu said, “I am extremely thrilled to be a part of this prestigious project. Sanjay Gupta is one of the best technicians we have in the

industry. He presents his actors like no one else. On the other hand, Ekta Kapoor is one of the most prolific producers. She leaves no stone unturned for her films. It’s an iconic role for me.” Dawood has always been an important character and a strong actor was needed to portray it and hence Gupta zeroed in on Sonu Sood. Sanjay Gupta says, “It is the clash of the titans. Who better to play young Dawood than Sonu Sood? Have you seen him? His body language and his physique work for the role perfectly. It is a very important character in the film.

Dippy will neither have a say in the matter of nor be consulted about the film’s release date. She won’t even be adamant on her ‘I-won’tdeal-with-middlemen’ policy in her communications with Race 2 directors Abbas Mustan. Our feathered friend told us that the 26-year-old has agreed to treat the film as a regular project and not as a special favour to the producer. This clearly indicates that despite Dippy’s fast rising star status she isn’t big enough to lay down ‘ifs’ and ‘buts’, especially since she doesn’t have a godfather to back her and is not the bearer of a wellknown surname. What can we say? Sometimes you pay a heavy price for a priceless lesson.

The public feud between the Desi Boyz leading lady and producer Ramesh Taurani will soon end on a happy note hile producer Ramesh Taurani can stop fretting over the future of his ambitious project Race 2, Deepika Padukone can wipe off the muck that landed on her image after he called her “unprofessional”. We’ve just heard that the Desi Boyz actor has agreed to complete shooting for the thriller even though the conditions she is supposed to have put forth during the initial peace talks will not be fulfilled. Dippy will be informed as and when decisions are made regarding the shoot and promotions, and not before a month as she had demanded. The model-turned-actor won’t be able to insist on getting her preferred set of designers, hair stylists and make-up artists.

We show how Dawood forms his D company the very night his brother Shabbir dies. John of course plays dreaded gangster Manya Surve. The clash of two of the best bodies in the industry should be interesting to watch.” The film, based on a story by Hussain Zaidi, deals with the rise of Dawood in the underworld and his rivalry with Manya Surve. It talks about the death of Dawood’s brother Shabbir (to be played by Manoj Bajpayee) and the encounter of Manya Surve reportedly orchestrated by Dawood.

hahid Kapoor’s fans have bought their superstar a gift that he will cherish forever. As a birthday present for Shahid who turned 31, a few of his fans have bought him the most unique and special gift ever- a heavenly body named after him. Some of his fans booked a ‘star’ through the official website starfoundation.net and named it after him. When Shahid returned to his Andheri residence from his 3 day birthday celebration in Goa, he received an official letter from Star Foundation and a certificate claiming that a star is now named ‘Shahid’. Shahid was really touched with this gesture by his fans. ‘Bollywood Striptease’ speaks the truth:

Riya Sen

I

ndecent proposals are the norm in the Hindi film industry claims author Neeta Shah in her new book “Bollywood Striptease” and actress Riya Sen seconds this, saying she too has had such experiences. “This book has everything and I think what she has written is true. My journey has been very different because I am not so ambitious. But yes, I have been offered, I have gone through a lot of experiences, directly and indirectly,” the 31-year-old told reporters at the launch of the book. “It depends on individual to individual, it’s what you choose. I have made my own decisions and I am happy with them,” she added. Riya, who herself got into trouble after allegedly being part of an MMS chain, says worrying about rumours

is not her style. “I have read my own interviews where people have quoted me when I have not even spoken to that journalist. I don’t sit and cry or howl or say I am running away from India or world. I still get my work, my money, I still have the same lifestyle, my friends and same producers, directors call me. So it (rumours) doesn’t affect me,” said Riya, who was last seen in “Benny and Babloo”. Daughter of yesteryears actress Moon Moon Sen, Riya’s journey in Bollywood began with “Style” in 2001. She has featured in films like “Dil Vil Pyar Vyar”, “Jhankaar Beats” and “Shaadi No. 1” and is currently working in “Krrish 2”, in which she plays Vivek Oberoi’s girlfriend.

decade-old in the industry, but Bipasha still hasn’t found a strong foothold in a Khan or Kapoor camp. And the less spoken about her on-again-off-again relationship with the Bhatts, the better. Recently, she was promoting her film at zoOm when she got down to talking about holding her own and being independent in the industry. She jokingly said, “No camp is ready to accept me. I must be a bad child! Ha, ha...” On a more serious note, she added, “Actually, I’ve had phases where I haven’t taken my career seriously. I’m accepting that I’ve had a laidback attitude. But that’s how I’m built. I’m not competitive and I won’t make efforts to network. I’m a hippie at heart. Ideally, I’d be living in Goa and working in Mumbai at the same time. When everyone takes a step ahead, I take a step back and relax.” Kya funda hai, Bips! The other lovely ladies of B-Town should also try taking a chill pill. Vicky Seth a well-known bookie, part of big syndicate: Police

M

atch-fixing and allegations of players’ involvement with bookies are back to haunt the sub-continent. The London daily Sunday Times’ report alleging that Indian bookmakers fixed the World Cup semifinal between Indian and Pakistan in Mohali on March 30 last year, has sparked fresh fears of the return of the scandal that rocked world cricket in the last decade. On Sunday, India and Pakistan will meet each other for the first time since the Mohali encounter in the ongoing Asia Cup in Bangladesh. According to the report, undercover reporters met Vicky Seth, a Delhi bookie, who claimed he could fix international matches - both Tests and T20s -- and games in both the Indian Premier League (IPL) and Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). Police sources in Ahmedabad - a city with a history of bookies and cricket betting -- said they have had information about Seth’s involvement in match fixing for quite some time now. “Seth is a well-known bookie attached to a very big betting syndicate. He started operating out of Delhi and was on the police’s radar for his alleged involvement in match-fixing but he has never been arrested,” said a police source. “Seth’s syndicate is operated very professionally. They are always one step ahead of the administration and they are equipped with latest gadgets and software too,” he added. “If Seth and his group would

March 2012 Edition

have been targeting to fix that particular World Cup match, they would have struck the deal when the Indian team was in South Africa or the Pakistan team was touring New Zealand before the World Cup. Actually, they have nothing much to do when a

match is on except accept bets because every deal is done well in advance,” he pointed out. “You will be surprised to know that these bookies mainly operate from countries where there is very little cricket or no cricket at all. They are high-

fliers and live life king size. Seth is known for his life style - he frequents the most happening dos in the city, including aftermatch IPL parties, because tournaments like IPL and BPL are always fertile ground for these bookies.”

The report has caught the Delhi Police crime branch unawares. It was gearing up to file the chargesheet in the Hansie Cronje match-fixing scandal but has now decided to “informally” look into the fresh allegations involving Seth and Monu Bhai, named as Seth’s associate. “We are on the verge of filing the chargesheet (in Cronje case). Hence we thought a background check on the two will help us rule out any link between the Hansie case and the new allegation,” revealed the Delhi police source, adding, “So far, we have spoken to several bookies, some of them established businessmen in the city. “However, we have not been able to trace anyone by the name of Vicky or Monu. We have, however, learnt about one Munna who was operating from Ahmedabad. He was a smalltime player and had gone off the scene four years ago.” The source also added that there was a need to look into bank accounts to ascertain the truth. The cops pointed out that they are yet to receive any official complaint. “If we receive a formal complaint, we will check the background of some north Indian bookies,’’ said DCP (crime) Ashok Chand.

Rahul Dravid expected to formally announce his retirement on Friday

F

or Rahul Dravid fans, the colour would have gone out of their lives on the day of Holi once they heard that he would not don the Indian team whites ever again. The official announcement is slated for Friday afternoon when Dravid is to address the media along with BCCI president N Srinivasan but the decision to retire from Test cricket (he had retired from the shorter versions of the game earlier) has already been taken by the man after consultation with family and friends. With this the curtain goes down on a glittering 15-year-long international career. Questions galore arise on the timing, naturally at that, as the man had after all failed in a mere

March 2012 Edition

four Tests on the disastrous Australian tour, prior to which he was the toast of the Indian team on their tour of England even as the rest of the side burned. Was he under external pressure, say from the BCCI which in the past has ingloriously pushed out many stalwarts, did the push come from within the team itself, or was it a combination of both or altogether something else? The simple answer is none of the above. Dravid is the sort who believes in leaving when there are more people asking why as opposed to why not. Remember he gave up the Indian Test captaincy when no was asking for his head and just after he had led the side to a series win in England. Also, like with the

captaincy, the call hasn’t been made in haste in the middle of a series, there was a lot of deliberation, with the clincher being that with the Indian team having finished with the tours of the big three nations - South Africa, England and Australia - the extra challenge that the man thrives on, would have been missing for a while. Now, Dravid couldn’t really care if his runs came against Bangladesh or Zimbabwe, he has always been hungry for more, but at 39, the plate was always half-full rather than halfempty and that is the basis of his decision. With the call having been made, Dravid is at peace and now, most ironically, he can concentrate on the upcoming

IPL, normally the least of his priorities. Surely he would have expected a lot of his IPL press conferences to centre around his Test future and in one timely stroke, he has dealt with it. Dravid may be at peace but Indian cricket surely will take some time to recover from this body blow. Things will move on but it will not be the same without the calming, assured presence of Dravid walking out at the fall of the first Indian wicket. The gentle raising of the bat, the shoulders stretched wide in celebration on reaching yet another landmark, all following his literally sweating bucketfuls, will no longer be on view. Oppositions the world over will rejoice, bowlers will jump

with joy in the knowledge that they will not have to work so hard to get a single wicket. Batsmen who had got used to their nicks being gobbled up at slip by the man with the safest pair of hands will sigh in relief, but to a man they will also agree that the game itself will be poorer for his absence. Dravid, indeed, was a great ambassador of the game, a perfect role model for the gentleman’s game. Surely, there is something bigger waiting for him. Perhaps Mr Srinivasan will throw some light on that on the morrow. For now though, it’s time to say goodbye and good luck to a true legend. Thank you Rahul for all the wonderful memories.

Communication is a vital part of having Good Sex Dr. C.R.S. Kumar Clinical Practice. Under these Feelings, feeling of “I am not successful” will be the major underlying causative factor for most of the sexual problems. 1. Fear of pregnancy; Fear of pain; Fear of being caught / heard / or interrupted. 2. Performance Anxiety-Fear of failing to perform well. 3. Fear of losing control (during orgasm) and or becoming vulnerable. 4. looking unattractive during the climax. 5. Bad feelings about yourself or your body like, feeling that the body is unattractive. 6. Feelings that I am not successful (low self-esteem).

Problems in relationship:

Ayurveda believes sexual communication plays vital role in sexual satisfaction. Sexual communication is an important aspect of sex. Sometimes the use of words to describe certain wants or needs for sexual satisfaction can create certain fears, which can ultimately lead to a breakdown of communication. This break down or non-existence of sexual communication can often serve as a barrier for sexual intimacy which can lead to a decrease in libido. Sex, like most other functions of

our body is a normal process. As other functions, like for example, the digestion, can be upset by factors like a bad mood, stress or similar such things, so can the sexual function be disturbed by a whole lot of factors. These may not necessarily involve the anatomy but instead it’s the mind, communication between partners which makes the difference. There are wide ranges of problem or situations that can upset the normal sexual responsiveness, most of them, fortunately, can be helped in a positive manner by understanding on our part.

Here are a few of the most common amongst them and ways to improve. Misunderstanding and/or lack of information about sex: Its indeed one of the most telling ironies that Sex, despite being one of the most commonly discussed topic in our lives and in the media, there is a surprising lack of correct information about ‘What to Expect and How to Act’. Bad feelings about Sex and its consequences: This is one among the major factors that can observe in majority of the clients in Ayurvedic

Anger/resentment against the partner should be resolved as it can decrease the performance and pleasure while having sex.

Improve communication: Communication is a vital part of having Good Sex. Remember “Sex is as much between the Ears, as it is, between the Legs”. Good communication with your partner can make the difference between having Sex ‘for the sake of it’ and having ‘a really good time’. Good verbal communication is a necessity in all relationships. An open

and honest conversation about sex can solve many sexual problems. Often, honest and open communication is cause for enhancements in overall sexual and emotional intimacy. Every couple is unique and has different methods for communicating. Some couples never talk about sex, while others show less inhibition. However, there should be a method between couples within the relationship to express feelings about sexual likes and dislikes in such a manner that provides important feedback without creating feelings of inadequacy. Finding this healthy sexual communication in your relationship can lead to the development of higher sexual intimacy. Regular coffee drinkers have lower cancer risk

A

new study has found that people who regularly drink coffee don’t have an increased risk of diseases like heart disease and cancer, and they also have a lower risk of Type 2 diabetes compared to sporadic drinkers or nondrinkers, Huffington Post reported. “Our results suggest that coffee consumption is not harmful for healthy adults in respect of risk of major chronic disease,” said study researcher Anna Floegel, an epidemiologist at the German Institute of Human Nutrition Potsdam-Rehbruecke. The study included 42,659 people who participated in the European Prospective

Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC)-Germany study. The researchers had the study participants record how frequently they ate the different foods in their diets (including coffee), and they also collected information on whether the study participants had any chronic diseases. After almost nine years, the researchers found that the people who drank four or more cups of coffee a day were at no higher risk for chronic disease, compared with those who drank less than a cup of coffee a day, according to the study.

new study has found that people who wake up early are slimmer, happier and healthier than those who get up later in the day. Researchers at the Roehampton University concluded that those who fight the urge to ignore the alarm clock complete morning chores faster, pack their children off to school earlier and thrive in the workplace. However, night owls have a higher chance of feeling de-

pressed or stressed and becoming overweight. The researchers quizzed 1,068 adults about their health and sleeping habits and found that ‘morning people’ were out of bed by 6.58 am on average, while ‘evening people’ waited until 8.54 am to start their day. At the weekend both groups enjoyed about an extra hour under the covers, with early risers waiting until 7.47 am to get up and night owls lying in until 10.09 am.

COLICY PAIN IN BABIES >>

The scariest thing for any parent is to find their baby crying constantly and hard and not knowing the cause of it. In most cases it can turn out to be colic (also called as infantile colic). About one in five babies develops colic. It is more common in boys and first born children. In most cases, colic is the worst pain a baby has experienced. Colic is a common infant disorder that

do not talk and so cannot complain about the pain or colic. Many times, putting hand on abdominal makes them cry a lot indicating that there may be abdominal pain or colic. Paediatricians often use the “Rule of Three” to diagnose colic: “A baby that cries for three or more hours per day, at least three times per week, within a three month period. • Otherwise healthy colicky babies cry hard and constant, at about the same time at least 3 days a week, often after feeding or meals, usually ending as abruptly as they begin. • Baby kicks a lot, pulls their legs up close, and makes tight fists. • Baby’s tummy seems hard, distended; the baby burps and passes gas often. • Baby makes crying sounds like it is in great pain. • Baby spits up frequently after feeding • Baby looks like its stomach hurts, and may stop crying after it passes gas or has a bowel movement.

SYMPTOMS: It is quite difficult to diagnose the abdominal pain in babies as they

CAUSES: Exact cause for Colic pain is not clear. But many factors can

contribute to it. • An immature nervous or digestive system • Swallowing of air especially when feeding • Reacting to something in mother’s diet (breastfed babies) • Allergic to some food in its own diet (like milk) IMPACT OF COLIC: Remember that colic can start anywhere in the first few weeks and usually disappears between 4 - 6 months of age. However, less commonly, inguinal hernia, bladder infection, appendicitis, pyloric stenosis, constipation etc may also give raise to abdominal pain. Hence it is wise to take your baby to your health practitioner to rule out other underlying causes. WHAT CAN BE DONE? No harsh medication should be given to the child for this condition. Eliminating foods that cause gas, use supportive herbal or homeopathic remedies to easily help relieve your baby’ s colic. Ensure that healthy food is taken by the mother is breast feeding. Try avoiding caffeine, dairy products, citrus fruits, soy products,

broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and spicy foods. If bottle-feeding, change the formula. Keep the baby in a sitting position when feeding, and massage their back to get rid of gas bubbles. Burp the baby after every feed. A tea made from fennel seed (Foeniculum vulgare) can be taken by the feeding mother to help relieve colic pain and increase digestion. Sexual problems could be behind migraines

T

here is a possible link between migraines, headaches and sexual issues, latest research suggests. A new study found that 90 per cent of women with migraines and tension-type headaches also have sexual problems, and 29 per cent of these women are stressed about their sex lives.“Women treated for primary headaches were found to display a high rate of sexual symptoms and distress,” researchers said. According to Huffington Post, they found that migraines and tension-type headaches are linked with the sexual pain and hypoactive sexual desire disorder (low sex drive that results in personal distress, according to the Mayo Clinic), while women with chronic tension-type headaches were more likely to have sexual distress. WebMD says tension type headaches are the most common kind of headache in adults; they are also called “stress headaches”.

The study involved 100 women with migraines (both with and without an aura) and chronic and episodic tension-type headaches. Researchers also took note of whether they had anxiety or depression. These women were observed for three months. The Daily Mail pointed out that women with headaches sometimes also have depression and anxiety that are also factors in sexual satisfaction. Some headache medication can also affect sex. Looking at things from the other direction, Everyday Health reported that sex can both help ease or hinder recovery from a migraine, depending on the person. For some people, the release of chemicals in the brain during sex help to make a migraine feel better; for others, sexual activity leads increased blood pressure and blood vessel dilation, which can lead to a headache, it said.
