Jawaharlal Nehru A leader or a man of action in a crisis almost always acts subconsciously and then thinks of the reasons for his action. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new; when an age ends; and when the soul of a nation long suppressed finds utterance. A theory must be tempered with reality. Action itself, so long as I am convinced that it is right action, gives me satisfaction.

designated Special Investigation Team (SIT) court on Thursday pronounced the quantum of sentence in the Ode massacre case in which 23 people were found guilty of killing 23 Muslims in the Ode town of central Gujarat during the 2002 riots. Judge Poonam Singh punished 18 persons, guilty of murder, with life imprisonment and five others, guilty of attempt to murder, with seven-year jail term. The charges of conspiracy, rioting, arson, unlawful assembly, destruction of evidence etc were common to all 23 convicts. All the convicts were sentenced to rigorous imprisonment. The accused remained silent and calm in the courtroom when the judge pronounced quantum of punishment. The 18 convicts punished with life imprisonment were also fined with Rs 5800. The other five were slapped with a penalty of Rs 3800 under various sections. The verdict triggered a stir among the relatives of the convicts gathered in the Anand court campus. The entire campus was in an uproar as the agitated relatives shouted slogans against the judiciary and chief minister

Narendra Modi. Women took the front and the SRP personnel were called in to disperse the mob. However, the relatives of the convicts continued to protest in the court campus. While a family claimed alibi for a convict, a girl Dhruti Patel said that her father, Dilip Vinu Patel, was mentally unstable and was wrongly implicated in the case. The defence lawyers Ashwin Dhagad and CK Patel were content with the sentence. “The court has rejected prosecution’s demand for capital punishment, and upheld our arguments that this incident does not fall in the category of the rarest of the rare category,” Dhagad said. However, they said they would challenge the verdict in the state high court. On the other hand, witnesses’ lawyer Irshad Mansuri expressed his dissatisfaction with the punishment handed out in one of the major post-Godhra riots cases. “The court upheld the conspiracy charge in this case. And no death sentence for killing hapless women and children with pre-planned conspiracy is a surprise for me. We will challenge this in higher court,” he said. Special prosecutor PN Parmar said that the SIT would decide on

appealing for death sentence after perusal of the court order. The Ode massacre was one of nine sensitive 2002 riot cases that the Supreme Court had asked the SIT to probe. 23 Muslims were burnt alive, in a house in Pirawali Bhagol in which they had taken shelter on March 1, 2002, by an agitated mob of more than 1,500 people. Most of the dead were

women and children. All 23 persons found guilty belong to the Patel community that is dominant in this part of Gujarat. The Ode massacre is the third case in the last 10 years, where a special court has pronounced a verdict after the SIT probed it. The first verdict came in the Sabarmati Express carnage at Godhra, which triggered the ri-

ots, after 59 people, mainly kar sevaks, were killed. Of the 31 people found guilty, 11 were given death sentence and 20 others life imprisonment terms. In the other case - the Sardarpura massacre in north Gujarat (33 people were killed)- the court sentenced 31 people to life imprisonment and acquitted 42 others.

SC upholds valid Right to Education Act

T

he Supreme Court on Thursday upheld the various provisions of the Right to Education Act, 2009. The apex court ruled that the RTE Act would apply to all categories of public and private schools except unaided minority schools. The SC judgement makes it clear that all schools will have to keep aside 25% of seats for poor children. The SC said the judgement would come into effect from today. The SC said the RTE Act will not apply to those institutions run by minority organisations and which do not receive a single penny as aid either from the government or local bodies.

S C upholds constitutional validity of Right to Education Act

April 2012 Edition

The apex court also said that the RTE Act would not apply to boarding schools. A bench comprising Chief Justice S H Kapadia and justices K S Radhakrishnan and Swantanter Kumar, which had reserved its verdict on August 3 last year, pronounced the verdict on the RTE Act. The main petitioner Society for Un-aided Private Schools, Rajasthan, and a host of associations representing various private schools questioned the validity of the Act on the ground that it impinged on their rights to run the educational institutions.

No one could breathe for 30-35 mins while watching Osama bin Laden raid: Hillary Clinton

Clinton, Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and members of the national security team seen watching the raid.

U

S Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has reveled how she and the fellow

White House officials were so astonished while watching live footage of the operation that killed

Osama bin Laden that they “could not breathe for 30-35 minutes.” In a speech to cadets at the US

Naval Academy in Maryland, Clinton gave a first-hand account of the incredible tension in the famous

‘Situation Room’ as the drama unfolded. When asked to reflect on bin Laden’s death and the process leading up to the mission that killed him in his Abbotabad compound, Clinton recalled her time as a New York senator during 9/11, and how the attack had affected so many of her constituents. Clinton then moved on to recount the night of the raid and told how none of the officials in the room watching the operation, including President Barack Obama ‘could breathe for 30-35 minutes,’ The Daily Mail reports. In the picture released by the White House last year, Clinton, Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and members of the national security team were seen watching as Navy Seals stormed the compound in Pakistan to take out the al-Qaida leader. According to the paper, Clinton, who was giving speech on US Asia-Pacific policy, also discussed North Korea’s impending satellite launch programme and described it as a provocation that threatens the security of the region. She stressed that history shows North Korea may follow a planned long-range rocket launch in violation of a UN ban with ‘additional provocations.’

Teenagers Shiva Thapa and Sumit Sangwan qualify for London Games

Thapa, Sangwan book Olympic berths

“I love you papa,” an emotional Shiva Thapa told his father when he called home soon after becoming the youngest Indian boxer to book an Olympics berth. The eighteen-year-old achieved this feat when he beat Japan’s

Satoshi Shimizu 31-17 in the semifinals of 56kg category of the Asian Qualifying Event in Astana ( Kazakhstan) on Wednesday. Another teenager, Sumit Sangwan, landed a powerpacked punch later in the

evening to extend celebrations in the Indian camp. The 19-yearold outclassed Jordan’s Ihab Almatdault 24-12 in the 81 kg category to become the seventh Indian to qualify for the London Games. India will now field its

biggest ever boxing contingent in the Olympic Games -- five boxers had represented the country at the Beijing Games in 2008. Celebrations also started at Sangwan’s home. “Jab se khabar aayi hai, phone pe phone aa rahe hai (The phone has not stopped ringing ever since the news of Sumit’s qualification broke),” Surender Sangwan, the proud father of Sumit said. Shiva was a point down at the end of first round but read his opponent well and changed his strategy to turn the tables on his Japanese opponent. The boy from Assam won the second round 15-6 and from there it was Shiva all the way. He will now meet Asian Games bronze medallist Wessam Salamana of Syria for gold on Thursday. Sumit was ahead on points from the start, leading 5-3 in the first round. The youngster from Karnal (Haryana) raised the level a notch in the second and raced ahead to 16-7 at the end of the high-scoring round. Despite the comfortable lead, the Indian did not allow his Jordanian opponent to settle down. Sumit had told TOI on Monday that he would win his semifinal bout. That was not an empty boast. His confidence shone through on Wednesday as he took apart his opponent.

Besides, the IIP growth has been revised downwards to 1.14 per cent in January, from the provisional estimates of 6.8 per cent, according to the official data released on Thursday. Output of the manufacturing sector, which constitutes over 75 per cent of the index, rose by just 4 per cent in February, compared to 7.5 per cent in February 2011. Audi pips Mercedes to No. 2 in India behind the rise of BMW and Audi. “The customer sees them as more contemporary brands, with more products. BMW and Audi have created multiple sub-segments within the luxury car market and this has worked to their advantage,” said Abdul Majeed, who tracks the auto segment at PricewaterhouseCoopers India. Majeed said unlike Mercedes, both BMW and Audi have been aggressive on product strategy. The entry-level corporate editions of models like BMW 3-series and Audi A4 have helped both companies gain higher volumes in the market. While BMW has a mini SUV in the X1 that accounts for a big part of its sales, Audi too is close to launching a rival in the Q3 mini SUV. Mercedes, however, does not have a comparable product globally as yet, though it is developing one. “We have the right building blocks in place and are confident of maintaining our momentum in the market,” Audi India head Michael Perschke said. Audi, he said, is not only expanding its product portfolio but also opening dealerships in newer cities. “Our plan is to open one new outlet every five-six weeks. We will be entering cities like Coimbatore, Nagpur, Goa and Lucknow as we get deeper into India.” Mercedes has chalked out an ambitious plan that includes launching two new models every year and pumping in nearly Rs 1,000 crore in fresh investment. One of its aims is to develop a fresh and youthful branding. “We are firmly moving as per our strategy and have plans to get back at rivals strongly,” Mitra said. “We are leading in most of the categories where we all compete, and it is just the absence of the mini SUV that makes a difference in overall volumes. The real test will be when we have a similar product in our kitty.”

A

fter losing the crown of top luxury carmaker in India to BMW in 2009, Mercedes Benz has now seen fellow German company Audi overtake it to occupy second spot. Mercedes, despite being the first of the three German luxury makers to set foot in India, has been hit hard by aggressive competition after BMW and Audi entered the market and launched locally-made products. According to data accessed by TOI, Mercedes sold 2,130 units in the first quarter of 2012 against 2,269 units sold by Audi. BMW stayed in the lead, selling 2,369 vehicles in January-March 2012. While BMW and Audi started their

operations in India only in 2007, Mercedes has been present in the market for almost 15 years. The company, however, has seen demand for its products dwindle after rivals started expanding their reach and launching new products, especially in the entry-luxury segment. Mercedes, however, did not read too much in the numbers and blamed ‘corporate edition’ variants offered by BMW and Audi -- cheaper but with some frills missing -- for their rising volumes. “Our customers do not compromise, and ‘strip down’ models are not for them,” said Debasis Mitra, sales & marketing director of Mercedes Benz India. “We are not selling commodity but luxury. Numbers are not the prime focus today.” Market analysts said contemporary styling as well as a younger buyer profile have been

Employees in India may get lower salary hike in 2012: Survey

E

mployees across corporate India are expected to get a lower average salary hike of 11.54% in 2012 compared to last year as companies are grappling with sluggish economic activities, says a survey. As per the survey conducted by HR consulting firm Right Step Consulting, the salary hikes for India would decline to 11.54% in 2012 from 11.89% in 2011. “After having grown at the rate of 8.4% over the last two years the Indian economy slowed down considerably in the year ended March 2012 and the lower than expected growth in economy at only 6.9% is reflecting in the Indian corporate sector’s lower outlook for compensation hikes for its employees,” Right Step Consulting Director Vishal Bhargava said. The drop in salary hikes is expected across both services and manufacturing sectors. While manufacturing sector is expecting a salary hike of 11.58% as against 11.91% in 2011, the service space is expecting a salary increase of 11.49% compared to 11.87% last year. “Drop in salary hikes in

manufacturing sector was expected given that sector’s estimated growth rate in 201112 at 3.9% is a drop of almost 50% as compared to 7.6% in the previous year,” Bhargava said. Among the sector, prominent core sectors such as power, steel, mining and construction are all expecting a lower salary hike. “Besides, the drop in expected salary hikes in services is on account of sharp drop in telecom and drops in sectors like retail, IT software, BFSI and travel/ hospitality,” he added. The survey, conducted among 2,326 Indian companies across sectors, said decline in salary hikes are expected across both foreign MNCs and Indian companies. “Drop in foreign MNCs is marginally higher from 12.17% in 2011 to 11.73% in 2012 a decline of 44 basis points as compared to Indian companies which are expecting a drop from 11.71% to 11.41% a drop of 30 basis points,” Bhargava said. Reflecting economic uncertainties and slow down in the home markets of foreign MNCs which is an additional concern for their India operations.

in court and cancellation of proceedings against them. Rajesh Talwar appeared in the court on Wednesday. He has been issued a notice by HC on an application recently filed by CBI challenging the extension of his bail. The agency says that “when he came out on bail on July 11, 2008, it was an interim bail not regular bail. He will have to apply for regular bail”. The couple and their counsels were not available for comments. On February 9, 2011, CBI Special Judge Preeti Singh declared the couple accused in the case under section 302 and 201 of IPC on the basis of circumstantial evidence pointed out by CBI in its case dairy and also on the basis of several witnesses, who had not directly seen the murders

but helped in reconstructing the sequence of events. Some of the witnesses, who were listed as important, included some friends of the Talwars, servants and Noida police officers. The court had also made elaborate observations on several leads including V-shaped injury marks on the bodies of both Hemraj and Aarushi, presence of only family members inside the house, cleaning of Aarushi’s private parts, the Talwars’ reluctance to open the door of the terrace on May 16, 2008, bloodstains on the stairs and the doctor’s opinion that only surgically trained person could have killed Hemraj and Aarushi. The judge had cited these points as the main grounds to charge the couple and ordered that the trial begin.

The Aarushi-Hemraj murder case took yet another dramatic turn on Wednesday as Nupur Talwar eluded the CBI, which had been ordered to arrest her by the special court. CBI teams raided her residence in Hauz Khas and some places in Noida but were unable to locate her. Nupur’s disappearing act followed the issuing of a ‘nonbailable warrant’ against her by the special CBI court on Wednesday. “She (Nupur Talwar) did not adhere to the Allahabad High Court order according to which she was supposed to be present in this court within 30 days,” said the special court. The court asked CBI to arrest Nupur Talwar and produce her before it by April 18. However, the agency as unable to locate her. Earlier in the day, Nupur Talwar had filed an application in the court through her counsel

citing her inability to appear. The application stated, “The review petition, which was heard by Supreme Court, on March 26 and after hearing the parties Supreme Court passed the order and issued notice to parties returnable to April 27. It is therefore humbly prayed in these circumstances that applicant could not turn up in this court today (Wednesday) and therefore request to provide further date till the outcome of the order of the Supreme Court after the hearing on April 27.” Countering her application, CBI requested the court to issue NBW against her on the grounds that “she was willfully evading appearance in the court”. Allahabad High Court had last month ordered that if she appeared within 30 days then her bail application should be expeditiously disposed. CBI prosecutor R K Saini said, “We

had moved an application in Allahabad High Court to recall the order (of High Court) on the grounds that she obtained the order by concealing material facts from Hon’ble High Court”. The agency stated, “It is necessary that non-bailable warrants of the accused Nupur Talwar be issued as she failed to appear before the court today. She is willfully evading her appearance.” Nupur Talwar was made an accused on charges of murder and destruction of evidence by the special court on February 9, 2011 along with her husband, Rajesh Talwar, as circumstantial evidence and statements of witnesses went against them. The trial has not started since then as the couple has filed many petitions in the lower court, high court and Supreme Court seeking bail, exemption from presence

No bar on migration of skilled workers: UK

T

he UK government on Wednesday allayed fears on its new migration policy, saying its decision was not meant to close doors on skilled workers from other countries. “We will continue to welcome those who can fill gaps in the labour market which can’t be filled by UK residents,” British

high commissioner to India, James Bevan CMG, said. Reacting to a recent TOI report on the new regulation curbing job prospects of Indian students, he clarified, “Students who wish to work in the UK after graduating will continue to be able to do so provided they have a graduate-level job.” He

said though Britain is committed to reducing net migration to the UK, it is equally committed to welcome legitimate visitors, students and business travellers. In fact, the UK government, he said, had last week announced that the annual limit for skilled migrants would remain at its present level for the next two

years. James Bevan said, “Ten years ago, some 14,000 came to Britain. In 2011, it was more than twice that number. We issued visas to 31,000 Indian students - 75% of those who applied.” On business visas, he said, “We have not set a limit on Indians

coming to the UK under intracompany transfers (where a company based in India wishes to send a staff member to work for the company in the UK). We listened to the views of Indian business in framing this approach. Last year, we issued 15,300 work and intracompany transfer visas.”

Bullied? It can hurt immune system too

B

ullying doesn’t just hurt one’s feelings it can damage one’s immune system also, according to researchers who have based their findings on a study on

monkeys. Lead author Jenny Tung at Duke University studied rhesus macaques and found that when one was introduced to a new group, which results in it having the lowest status,

it became stressed and its immune system dropped in efficiency. The researchers believe that the social stress that moulds a monkey’s immune system could

help understand how stress affects humans, the ‘Daily Mail’ reported. In fact, they studied 10 groups of female macaques in which researchers could manipulate

individuals’ social rank. Before being placed into new groups, all of the macaques started out as middle rank. “In the wild, macaques inherit their social rank from their mothers. “But in our research, the order of introduction determines rank. The newcomer is generally lower status. When some macaques’ status changed after a newcomer arrived , so did their patterns of immune system gene activity ,” Tung said. The researchers used microarrays , a technology that allows them to scan thousands of genes and read the expression levels, to look at the macaques’ immune cells. The gene activity that changed the most depending on social rank was what controlled inflammation. Previous studies have found lower status macaques have higher levels of inflammation and have changes in their levels of hormones that indicate they are under more stress. Based on the pattern of gene activity, the researchers could, without looking at a monkey’s identity, predict whether that animal was high (rank one or two), middle or low (rank four or five) with 80% accuracy. The gene scans revealed the pattern of immune system activity changed along with these monkeys’ social ranks.

Mumbai loves its vacations, 80% prefer 2 breaks

It’s vacation time and as people sit to chalk out their travel plans this year, instead of the usual one, they are getting ready to prepare two. Leading the list of travellers planning two breaks are people

from Mumbai, with more than 78% saying they prefer more than one holiday in a year. Despite a cringing economy and rising prices, 69% of Mumbai travellers and 63% from

Hyderabad are willing to loosen their purse strings and spend anywhere between Rs 50,000 and Rs 2 lakh on their holidays this summer, according to a recentlyreleased survey by an online travel

portal TripAdvisor. Drawing a correlation between the city a person stays in and the amount they plan to spend on a holiday, the survey said that Bangaloreans came out as the thriftiest with the lowest number of respondents across the six metros willing to splurge between a lakh and two on their summer breaks. Chennai-based travellers were willing to spend more with 40% saying they will spend in excess of Rs 1 lakh, while 39% said their travel cost will be between Rs 10,000 and Rs 50,000. People from Mumbai, followed by those in Bangalore and Delhi were the least excited about the ongoing cricket season. “Seventytwo per cent respondents said they were not excited about the matches. Only 15 per cent plan to travel to catch the game live in different cities,’’ the survey said. The survey was conducted over a course of three days with inputs from 1,500 respondents who used the site. “It seems like a bustling summer for travellers this year. It is interesting to note that more Indian travellers are willing to explore newer destinations and seek more adventure on their vacations,” said Nikhil Ganju, country manager, TripAdvisor.

The survey also found that Indians continue to be loyal to destinations in South-East Asia with Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia topping the mostpreferred list. They are followed by Australia, the UK and the US. “Destinations like Kashmir, Port Blair, Spain, Greece, Nepal, Bhutan, Cambodia and Vietnam also emerged as new vacation choices for a few, indicating a trend to go off the beaten track,” said the survey. People were game to travelling to unknown, mystery destinations as well. “Fifty per cent Indian men and 40 per cent women were willing to experiment with mystery holidays. The big surprise was that 65 per cent of travelers in the age group of 65 plus were game for a mystery holiday,” the survey said. After hill stations and beaches, Mumbaiikars are planning wildlife safari holidays, camping/hiking/ rafting and romantic getaways. There are not many new birds flying international, as 93% of Mumbaiikars surveyed said they have touched foreign shores before. While Kolkata had the highest percentage (17) of travellers looking to go abroad, Chennai had the most (94%) planning a holiday this summer.

Govt approves restructuring plan for Air India

The issue of allowing foreign airlines to invest in Indian carriers could be taken up by the Cabinet next week.

I

n a big boost to ailing Air India, the government on Thursday approved a turnaround plan (TAP) to restructure the operations and the finances of the cashstrapped carrier, including infusion of additional equity. “The turnaround plan of Air India has been approved,” civil aviation minister Ajit Singh told reporters after a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA). The CCEA approved the TAP and the airline’s financial restructuring plan (FRP), which includes additional equity infusion by the government. Besides, the issue of induction of the much-awaited Boeing Dreamliner-787, part of the TAP, was also given the green signal

April 2012 Edition

by the CCEA, official sources said. They said the issue of allowing foreign airlines to invest in Indian carriers could be taken up by the Cabinet next week. As part of the airline’s restructuring plans, the government had announced infusion of Rs 4,000 crore during the current fiscal in the 2012-13 Union Budget. This would raise the airlines’ equity base to Rs 7,345 crore. US aircraft manufacturer Boeing is expected to deliver the first of the 27 Dreamliners, ordered in 2005, to the national carrier next month. The delivery of these aircraft was initailly to commence from 2009 but the US aircraft-maker deferred it for various reasons,

including labour unrest. The SBI-led consortium of 19 banks had last month approved the FRP which includes debt restructuring of Rs 18,000 crore by the banks and a committed equity infusion by the government. The FRP would provide relief to Air India from its debt servicing obligations on working capital, in the form of a substantial reduction in interest outlays while giving it the necessary time to improve its operational efficiency and implement the TAP. As part of the FRP, Air India had signed four agreements with the banks’ consortium on March 31 -- the master restructuring agreement, working capital facility agreement, appointment of facility agent agreement

and appointment of trustee agreement. A major highlight of the agreements included conversion of about Rs 10,500 crore of the airline’s working capital into longterm loan, carrying an annual interest of 11 per cent. “The first year interest would accumulate in a funded interest term plan,” the sources said, adding these would lead to substantial savings of about Rs 1,000 crore in 2012-13 itself. In addition, non-convertible debentures (NCDs), guaranteed by the government, worth Rs 7,400 crore, would be issued and subscribed by the investors. The proceeds from the NCDs would be used to repay the lenders, they said. Apart from this, part of the

working capital of about Rs 3,500 crore would be restructured as cash credit arrangement. Under the FRP, Air India has proposed that the government should infuse equity of about Rs 30,231 crore in the 2012-21 financial period. The government has so far infused equity of Rs 800 crore in 2009-10, Rs 1,200 crore in 201011 and another Rs 1,200 crore in 2011-12. The debt-ridden carrier has outstanding loans and dues worth Rs 67,520 crore, of which Rs 21,200 crore is working capital loan, Rs 22,000 crore longterm loan on fleet acquisition, Rs 4,600 crore vendor dues besides an accumulated loss of Rs 20,320 crore.

India one of top performing clean energy economies: Report

India’s “National Solar Mission”, with a goal of 20 GW of solar power installed by 2020, helped drive the seven-fold jump in solar energy investments, to $4.2 billion, says a report by an American NGO.

April 2012 Edition

Clean energy investment, excluding research and development, has grown by 600 per cent since 2004, on the basis of effective national policies that create market certainty, Cuttino added. India’s “ National Solar Mission”, with a goal of 20 GW of solar power installed by 2020, helped drive the seven-fold jump in solar energy investments, to $4.2 billion, the report said, adding the country received $4.6 billion and an additional 2.8 GW of capacity was installed over the course of the year. India now has 22.4 gigawatts of installed clean energy generating capacity, it noted. “The clean energy sector received its trillionth dollar of private investment just before the end of 2011, demonstrating significant growth over the past eight years,” said Michael Liebreich, CEO of Bloomberg New Energy Finance, Pew’s research partner. “Solar installations drove most of the activity last year as the falling price of photovoltaic modules, now 75 per cent lower than three years ago, more than compensated for weakening clean energy

support mechanisms in a number of parts of the world,” Liebreich said. Globally, investment grew to a record $263 billion in 2011, a 6.5 per cent increase over the previous year, the report said. The US reclaimed the top spot among all G-20 nations and attracted $48 billion. However,

with $45.5 billion in private investments, China continued to be a hub of clean energy activity - leading the world in wind energy investment and deployment as well as wind and solar manufacturing. Germany received $30.6 billion ranking third among G-20 nations.

The combination of falling prices and growing investments accelerated installation of clean energy generating capacity by a record 83.5 GW in 2011 bringing the total to 565 GW globally. This represents almost 50 per cent more than installed nuclear power capacity, the report said.

ith Indian receiving $10.2 billion investments in clean energy, the country has emerged as one of the top performing clean energy economies in the 21st century, an eminent American non-profit organisation said in a report. The Pew Charitable Trust, in its report, said India’s clean energy sector continued to flourish in 2011, with private investment increasing 54 per cent to $10.2 billion, placing the country at number 6 spot among the G-20 nations. This was the second highest growth rate among the G-20 nations, The Pew Energy said in its research report released here on Wednesday. “On a number of measures, India has been one of the top performing clean energy economies in the 21st century, registering the fifth highest fiveyear rate of investment growth and eighth highest in installed renewable energy capacity,” said Phyllis Cuttino, director of Pew’s Clean Energy Program. “The country holds great potential in the Asia/Oceana region and will continue to be a top destination for private investment this year,” she said.

Shahrukh Khan caught smoking during IPL

S

ome time back it was a Goa-based anti tobacco organization that served a legal notice to actor and KKR team owner Shah Rukh Khan for smoking in public at a summit and at a cricket tourna-

ment in Mumbai. Well this year, yet another complaint was filed in a court in Jaipur on Monday against SRK for publicly smoking at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium during a cricket match on Sunday. Bollywood Hungama

has learnt that the complaint lodged by lawyer Nem Singh Rathore on behalf of Jaipur Cricket Academy director Anand Singh Rathore was submitted in the court of the additional chief judicial magistrate, which has

since fixed the date of April 12 for hearing in the matter. Apparently, smoking public is banned in Rajasthan since 2000. However, Shah Rukh Khan was smoking publicly in front of thousands of spectators.

Further, the complainant added that while other viewers in the stadium were frisked and their cigarette packets were confiscated, the actor was allowed entry, which is negligence on part of the police also.

TEZZ She makes the song as her own despite Rahat leading from the front with his own solo and gives a great account of herself all over again. In fact it won’t be wrong to say that the ease with which she sings the songs, especially the ‘antara’ portions, this version could well have appeared at the start of the album. What arrives much earlier though is the title track ‘Tezz’ which has it’s opening sound reminding one of the signature theme of Pulp Fiction (which is a genre in itself and was also heard in the theme track of Cash, another action film). It sets the tune for the song (well, literally) and with Sunidhi Chauhan bringing in good energy here, one can well expect the track to appear at number of junctures in the film to aid its narrative. An out and out Western outing that also has a ‘remix version’ for itself, this Jalees Sherwani written track also sees a Shaan solo for itself which doesn’t quite cover as much distance as the original. The song which catches your

ezz gets a highly impressive start for itself, what with Rahat Fateh Ali Khan bringing on magic all over again with ‘Tere Bina’. A smooth-n-silky song that one expects from the singer every time he comes behind the mike, ‘Tere Bina’ is as ‘desi’ as it gets and turns out to be a haunting melody which would be played for many more months to come. In fact the film gets a huge bonus in the form of ‘Tere Bina’ because this could well have been a flagging song in a quintessential romantic number. This is a kind of number that Salman Khan could have grabbed with both hands from Sajid-Wajid if they would have made him hear it. A chartbuster song all the way, Jalees Sherwani written ‘Tere Bina’ deservingly gets three more versions for itself. While the standard ‘remix’ version is a definite good addition to the album and so is the ‘sad’ version (both by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan), what catches one’s attention most is the Shreya Ghoshal solo.

attention all over again though is ‘Main Hoon Shab’ which is easily the pick of the lot (along with ‘Tere Bina’), especially when it comes to the melodic quotient. While the name Mohit Chauhan is a good enough reason to keenly look forward to what the song has to offer, it is to the credit of Sajid-Wajid who make place for a romantic outing. In fact the kind of structure and arrangements that ‘Main Hoon Shab’ boasts of, it would be an easy and comfortable pick for those who swear by tracks coming from the likes of Mohit Chauhan or for that matter even Atif Aslam. A smooth flowing song that is quite easy

on ears, it also boasts of some good lyrics by Shabbir Ahmed who comes up with yet another well written outing. Last to arrive is ‘Laila’ which is clearly a quick fix, the kind that works for the duration that it plays and creates good enough excitement to keep the audience engaged. One has to credit Sunidhi Chauhan for singing in a manner that it totally suits Mallika Sherawat. While this Shabbir Ahmed written song does sound like yet another template driven familiar sounding number, it comes on its own after repeated hearing, what with ‘remix’ version following as well. Though it isn’t the

kind that would be heard and seen six months down the line, it is good enough to constitute for a good ingredient in the narrative of Tezz. OVERALL Tezz delivers slightly more than what one had expected from it, given the fact that it is an action thriller. While there are a couple of racy numbers to go with the theme of the film, what really makes one pick on this Sajid-Wajid score are songs like ‘Tere Bina’ and ‘Main Hoon Shab’ which are indeed the pick of the lot and promise a good enough shelf life.

truggling cellphone maker Nokia on Wednesday disclosed a software bug in its new flagship Lumia 900 model, dealing a setback to its ambitions to re-enter the US smartphone market. Nokia lost smartphone market dominance to Apple and Google in part due to its weak performance in the United States and the Lumia 900, which uses Microsoft’s Windows Phone software, is a key component in its comeback bid. “It’s like they stalled their engine when everybody is looking at them at the start of their race,” said Gartner analyst Carolina Milanesi. The model went on sale in the United States through AT&T on April 8 and is due to launch globally this quarter. “A memory management issue was discovered that could, in some cases, lead to loss of data connectivity,” Nokia smartphone unit chief Jo Harlow and Nokia US chief Chris Weber said in a joint statement. “This issue is purely in the phone software, and is not related to either phone hardware or the network itself,” they said. A solution would be available around April 16. Nokia said it will offer anyone who has bought Lumia 900, or will buy by April 21, a $100 credit to their AT&T bill. The operator sells the phone for $99.99 with a two year contract. “They really did not need it particularly in this market, but I like the way they are dealing with it,” Gartner’s Milanesi said.

Bharti Airtel in talks to buy 4G licences from Qualcomm

Bharti Airtel is in advanced discussions with US chipmaker Qualcomm to buy its fourth-generation licences for about Rs 6,000 crore.

Bharti Airtel is in advanced discussions with US chipmaker Qualcomm to buy its fourth-generation licences for about Rs 6,000 crore, an acquisition that will allow the country’s largest telecom firm to quickly launch 4G services in the key markets of Delhi and Mumbai. A person familiar with the development said the deal is likely to be closed by June and will be accompanied by technology agreements between Qualcomm and Bharti. Fourth-generation, or 4G, services offer users internet access at three times the speed of 3G and require broadband airwaves.

April 2012 Edition

Qualcomm, which had won airwaves in four regions - Mumbai, Delhi, Haryana and Kerala - in the broadband wireless auction of 2010 for Rs 4,900 crore, had begun talks to sell its 74% stake in its Indian joint venture to Bharti later that year. But the talks were put on hold after the telecom department cancelled the US chipmaker’s mobile broadband permits last year on the grounds that it had not applied for licences within three months of the auction. The telecom department further alleged that Qualcomm applied for

permits under the names of four different companies, violating auction guidelines that said winners could ‘nominate only one company for obtaining a licence’. But last month, the Telecom Disputes Settlement & Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) ruled in favour of Qualcomm’s India unit and the company is expected to receive spectrum in 10 days, paving the way for discussions to be revived and the transaction to possibly go ahead. A Bharti Airtel spokesman said the company did not comment on market speculation while emails

to the US company went unanswered. “The sale is Qualcomm’s decision, we are not involved at this point,” said HS Bedi, chairman and managing director of Tulip Telecom, one of Qualcomm’s two JV partners in India. Qualcomm sold 26% to Tulip & GTL Infrastructure Qualcomm divested 13% each to Tulip Telecom and GTL Infrastructure shortly after winning the 4G licences to ensure it adhered to Indian norms that cap foreign holding in a telecom company at 74%. On Tuesday, Bharti launched India’s first 4G services in Kolkata. The company plans to follow suit in Bangalore within a month. But the country’s largest telecom company had won permits for only four circles in the broadband wireless auctions and is in danger of being outgunned in this segment by Reliance Industries, which bagged airwaves for the entire country. Reliance is expected to launch 4G services in the third quarter of the financial year, triggering a price war in the high-speed data services market. Analysts say if the Qualcomm deal happens, it will help Bharti strengthen its competitive posi-

tion in the 4G market as it will be able to quickly launch operations in Delhi and Mumbai, the two cities that are expected to account for a third of all 4G customers in the next five years. Bharti currently holds licences in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kolkata and Punjab. Bharti is also eyeing the 700 MHz band auctions to consolidate its position in the 4G segment. The 700 MHz band is considered to be thrice as efficient as the 2300 MHz band that was auctioned in 2010. While the government has said it plans to hold the auctions in the current financial year, both Reliance Industries and Reliance Communications have demanded that these be held later. Qualcomm’s India unit has spent a total of Rs 5,214 crore so far, including spectrum fee and interest charges on borrowing. The equity capital of the company is around Rs 1,100 crore while the rest has been borrowed. Even as the chipmaker was contesting its licence cancellation in the telecom tribunal, the telecom department said Tulip Telecom had outstanding fee and penalty amounting to Rs 410 crore and the allocation of airwaves would only happen after the dues were cleared.

Support is included for 4:3, 16:9, and 16:10 output with resolutions up to 1280 x 800. The contrast ratio is 1,000:1, it achieves 75 lumens brightness, and has an LED bulb with an estimated lifetime of 20,000 hours.

As well as being a capable projector, the C120 does not require a power cable. You can plug it in to a laptop via a single USB 3.0 cable to get all the power it requires as well as handling data transfer. Plug in a power cable as well, and the brightness will get a boost up to 100 lumens. Size shouldn’t be an issue either, with the unit measuring just 4.72 x

3.23 x 1 inches and weighing a pocket-friendly 180 grams. The C120 is listed for $259, but can already be picked up for $229 on Amazon. That 100-inch display should make it appeal to anyone needing to do a presentation, but also wanting to play a game on something significantly larger than an LCD panel. With pico projectors becoming

pocketable devices, we should see competition heat up like it did when video cameras such as the Flip and Kodak Zi8 appeared. When that happens a $100 price point for HD pico projectors is inevitable. And then hopefully the components will become small enough to make projectors inside smartphones a reality.

Rockstar animator points to October launch for GTA V

W

e first started hearing rumors about GTA V nearing completion back in July last year, but it took until October for Rockstar Games to officially announce the game. At the time, no release date was given, but the developer did follow up the announcement a few days later by releasing the first trailer.

April 2012 Edition

We still don’t have a release date, but new evidence has appeared pointing to an October 2012 launch. That evidence comes in the form of a resume and LinkedIn profile for Rockstar North animator Alex O’Dwyer. The resume has since disappeared and LinkedIn profile updated, but not before the GTA V information

had been logged. According to O’Dwyer, GTA V will land in stores in October this year. He also lists it as a PS3, Xbox 360, and PC launch, but I doubt very much the PC version will be a same day launch. Historically there has been several months between a console and PC release of a Grand Theft Auto

game. Could that be different this time around? The modern GTA series, which I class as starting with GTA III, has typically seen a release happening on consoles in October. The exception to that rule is GTA IV, which arrived in April 2008. Even so, it has been 4 years since that release, and I’m sure Rock-

star would prefer to hit the main games selling period of the year in the run up to the holidays. If an October release turns out to be true, I’d expect a few high profile games to push their release back to early 2013, or try to launch a few weeks before GTA V arrives.

here is something special about MTV Roadies ninth season. This youth reality show will be shot in the US of A, making it the first ever Indian reality show to be shot in

America. Thanks to the logistics and taking the show abroad, MTV Roadies 9 has proved to be the most expensive season. Also, while shooting this one the price

of the US dollar saw an increase and it was this economic turn of events that caused the budget to go over the top. However, the producers Rajiv and Raghu pat themselves on

the back for their ‘economic TV info’ which they say helped control things. “Else things would’ve gone haywire and the situation could’ve become worrisome’. MTV Roadies 9 will see 6 boys

hekhar Suman’s Movers And Shakers has been in the buzz for a long time now. However, the stand-up comedy is nowhere funny and fails to tickle the funny bone! Ever since Shekhar Suman made the announcement that he would be back with the popular comedy show Movers And Shakers, people have been looking forward to the show. Unfortunately, Movers And Shakers has been disappointing so far. Though Govinda was the first guest on the show, he did not make the desired impact. Both Govinda and Shekhar Suman have a terrific sense of humour and anybody would expect the duo to cause a laugh riot. However, the magic was missing as Govinda went on a nostalgia trip. Though Shekhar Suman’s comic timing is good, his jokes sometime can cause quite a bit of embarrassment to the guest! Movers And Shakers needs to come up with a creative concept or else nobody will be interested in Movers and Shakers anymore!

Daal Makhani Recipe

D

al Makhani is a signature staple food that originates from Punjab, a region in the Indian subcontinent and made from urad also known as black gram or black whole lentil and rajma (red kidney beans). When India was portioned many families in western regions of Punjab and the northwestern provinces were uprooted and forced to take refuge in northern regions of India. This recipe travelled with the migrants, who took

restaurants as an alternate business to make their living and re-build their families. The legendary cook Kundal Lal of Moti Mahal in Delhi popularized Dal Makhani by serving it in his restaurant and believed to have perfected the recipe also. However, also because very popular with people eating “dhabhas,” dhabhas are not so elegant eateries mostly along the highways and in less posh area of the city.

INGEDIENTS 1 cup whole urad daal (urad sabut) 1 onion finely chopped 1” Ginger piece Chopped coriander leaves 1/2 cup stirred curd 2tbsp butter 1/2tsp turmeric powder Red chili powder to taste Salt to taste

1tbsp Red kidney beans (Rajma) 1 tomato finely chopped 2-3 green chilies finely chopped 4-5 flakes Garlic paste 1/2 cup fresh stirred cream (malai) 1tsp cumin seeds (jeera) 1/2tsp Garam masala 1/2tsp dhania powder

HOW TO MAKE DAAL MAKHANI: 1. Soak rajma in water overnight. 2. Add water & little salt and pressure-cook Rajma and urad daal till soft for about 20-25 minutes. 3. Can Alcohol be healthy?

fter a stressful day we all want a release. To a certain extent, in moderation, alcohol can help take the edge off a difficult day. But wine, beer, brandy and whiskey can be useful beyond just a bottoms up. The following text may inspire you to hit the club, hence proceed with caution; this article is not about the virtues of unbridled liquor consumption, rather it is about the virtues of how liquor can promote health, especially as an ingredient for home remedies. We begin with Brandy. Brandy: Made from grapes, brandy is a spirit that has more than one healing power. It can warm you up in cold weather, and be your favourite antioxidant and friend when you’re down with the flu. Science proves that 30 ml of brandy per day brings a similar benefit as your daily dose of vitamin C. But hold on, before you start sipping brandy, you should know that you must continue moderate Brandy consumption along with your daily intake of vitamin C. Psst: Copper is an important mineral for distilling brandy, hence pumps up the antioxidant in brandy. Brandy is good for preventing stroke and certain kinds of dementia. How to consume: You can make a hot toddy or simply add honey to 30ml brandy for a soothing drink. Whiskey: Distilled from grain and matured in wooden barrels, whiskey is a hard drink and has a huge fan following across the globe. There are different kinds of whiskeys from different grains

and from different countries. One pub measure, once a week will protect you from diseases, just like wine protects you from cardiac diseases as it raises the amount of antioxidants in your blood. Plus, phenol in whiskey brings a lot of health benefits with it. Psst: Did you know that the word Whisky is derived from Gaelic for ‘Water of Life?’ How to consume: A small

dose of neat, matured whiskey is enough to derive health benefits. Beer: One of the oldest fermented alcoholic beverages, beer has fans like Homer Simpson. We know that beer gives your hair an additional glow, but beer is rich in fiber, also magnesium, potassium, folate, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12. Long blamed for the beer belly, it has since been proved that it is not

the beer that causes abdominal obesity, but the food you tend to consume with it. Psst: In a research study on Italian men and women it was found that beer keeps your mind young. How to consume: One glass of beer a day is good for you, but more than that has the opposite effect. Wine: Indians have opened up to drinking wine; it is no

longer associated with just the Italians and the French. From rosy cheeks to a happy heart, wine was and is a popular beverage. Red wine is considered the fountain of youth by many thanks to the high level of antioxidants. A great accompaniment for romantic dinners, wine will boost your body’s defenses, build bones and balance blood sugar levels. Psst: Studies have linked moderate wine consumption to increased libido in women. How to consume: One glass a day of this fountain of life will keep you going for years. Vodka: Hip hop artists endorse it as the ‘cool quotient drink’, but the Russians believe it is a cure to all their problems and they might just be on to some thing. In several cultures, Vodka is used as an alternative medicine. Psst: Some say that Vodka does not give you hangovers. We suggest you try this out for yourself. How to consume: Consume no more than 1-2 units (30ml each) of Vodka at one go. Rum: Produced from sugarcance - when had in moderate quantities - rum can help prolong life, and even reduce risk of dementia, cancer and stoke. Psst: Did you know rum is also called Barbados water, Killdevil, gorg, Nelson’s blood, Navy Neaters and Demon water? How to consume: 42.5gms of Rum will do the trick. Any more and you’d better hold on to that flight pillow for work the next morning.

A village on stilts

xplore Cambodia’s Tonle Sap Lake, home to a charming floating village with rustic and colourful double-storied houses

Cambodia has so much to offer to international traveler in terms of a rich cultural, natural and historical heritage. Not only are there the world renowned Angkor Wat complex and surrounding temples steeped in history and mystique, but for those who enjoy relaxing on tropical beaches. The country undoubtedly offers some of the most beautiful unspoiled beaches in the world. Offshore lie coral islands and exotic fish while inland indigenous flora and fauna, waterfalls, and tropical forests all await discovery. Cambodia has places of interest all over the country but the principle attractions can be divided into three main areas: Phnom Penh, Siemreap (Angkor), and the South coast. However, for eco-tourists, more and more people are heading off the beaten track and venturing into the hilltribe regions of Rattanakiri, Mondulkiri, the Kirirom National Park and other more remote but beautiful rural areas. Without question, the heritage of Cambodia far surpasses that of any of its neighbor, harking back to a past time when it was the dominating force of the region. Its territory, far in excess of its current one, encompassed much of what is now Thailand, Vietnam and Laos. The architectural achievements from this period are without equal in the region and are on par with the wonders of ancient Egypt or Aztec Monuments. Extensive articles about the History - Angkor Civilization, Reasons for rise and fall of the Khmer Empire, and the Chronology are available for visitors to learn the background of this impressive country.

Geography Cambodia covers an area of 181,035 square kilometers and is divided into 21 provinces. It is bordered to the North by Thailand and Laos, to the East and South by Vietnam, and to the South and Southwest by the Gulf of Thailand. Much of Cambodia is relatively flat with vast tracts of land given over to rice production. Other areas of Cambodia are mountainous, including the Dangrek, Cardomen and Elephant mountain ranges.

Climate and Seasons As a tropical country, Cambodia is bathed in almost all year sunshine and has a high average temperature. There are two distinct seasons, the dry and the monsoon. The monsoon lasts from May to October with southwesterly winds ushering in the clouds that bring seventy five to eighty percent of the annual rainfall often in spectacular intense bursts for an hour at a time with fantastic lightening displays. The dry season runs from November to April averaging temperatures from 27 to 40 degrees Celsius. The collest and most comfortable for those from cooler climates is from October to January.

Arts and Handicrafts Cambodia is widely recognized as being associated with beautiful carvings though many of the artisans were executed during the Pol Pot regime. Cambodia is home to some of the most exquisite religious sculptures in the world, many of which command extraordinary prices on the world market. Woven silk products are highly popular as are basketry, gold and silverware, and all kinds of jewelry made from precious stones including the famous Pailin rubies. Also to be found are traditional musical instruments, paintings and ornate stone rubbings taken from the temples.

April 2012 Edition

Events and Festivals Cambodia has a wealth of traditional and international festivals. Most of these are a time of great rejoicing for the predominantly rural populace, many of whom flock to the capital to join in the celebrations and witness the organized fireworks displays which accompany the festivals. It is at these times the nation unites with a shared common understanding of values and traditions and they are looked forward to with great expectation. Even in times of hardship people try even harder to make these times special. All the traditional festivals are influenced by the concepts of Buddhism, Hinduism and royal cultures. The following are the most important of the celebrations organized throughout the year.

Water festival (October or November) This vast festival is probably the most extravagant festival in the calendar. Over three days starting with the last full moon day in October or the beginning of November up to a million people from all walks of life from all over the country flock to the banks of Tonle Sap and Mekong Rivers in Phnom Penh to watch hundreds of brightly colored boats with over 50 paddlers battle it out for top honors. The boat racing dates back to ancient times marking the strengths of the powerful Khmer marine forces during the Khmer empire. In the evening brightly decorated floats cruise along the river prior to and complimenting the fireworks displays. there is often a parallel festival at Angkor Wat and although it is smaller in scale it is just as impressive due to the backdrop of Angkor Wat.

Pchum Ben(Sep) This is the most culturally and religiously significant event of the year and is celebrated in September. This festival of souls concentrates on blessing the souls of ancestors, relatives, and friends who have passed away. All Buddhist temples, especially Wat Phnom, are the focal points for this festival and most Cambodians visit the temples to make traditional offerings and pray.

King Sihanouk’s Birthday Celebration (October 31) This celebration revering the country’s influential king take place in late October or early November. People from all over the country come to the capital to join in celebrations and festivities held throughout the capital. Often the King’s birthday and Water festivals coincide resulting in a mammoths celebration in front of the Royal Palace and along the riverfront. Provincial villagers who would ordinarily have no reason to visit Phnom Penh will save up and make this occasion their sole visit to the capital.

Saurabh & Aaradhana’s Congratulation!

How the world can change, it can change like that; With one little word “Married” The bride and groom have known each other for so long that Aaradhana casually jokes how next year, their first Wedding Anniversary would be their 10th Anniversary together. It has been a long journey. First finishing their undergrad together in New Delhi, followed by an MBA in La Trobe University, their first jobs and many more experiences, Saurabh and Aaradhana have literally grown up together. So when the time came to get married, they decided to go all out. Having a civil ceremony first on 7th February 2012 in Melbourne, they shared their special day with all close friends and then flew overseas to have another intimate wedding with just their families in New Delhi. Saurabh was quite concerned that their friends may miss out the Wedding Reception in Kathmandu and so the couple planned for another Wedding Reception in Melbourne once they got back. And was preparing for the Reception in a span of few days easy??? Not really. The couple was involved at every step of the preparations, straight from food tastings to the lightings. After long hours and a few ‘arguments’, the day arrived sooner than expected. They say ‘you never get to enjoy your own Wedding’. But the couple really put this saying to shame, as they rocked up to The River Room at Crown Towers dancing to the beats of Dhol, pulled each other’s leg during their speech and then danced until the wee hours.

She personally requested that she meets her and spends some time with her.” And since Shilpa’s expecting her first child, Katy apparently wants to personally congratulate her. “Shilpa may not be able to fly down for the ceremony, so they are trying to figure out if there is time to bring the musician to Mumbai so she can meet Shilpa.” The to-be mum is obviously excited to meet the 27-year-old musician. Mantra Meditation Technique

A mantra is basically a word, or a phrase, that is chanted repeatedly either mentally or out aloud. When a mantra is uttered out aloud, the sound is said to create powerful vibrations, allowing the mind to focus as well as concentrate more fully on the sound, while clearing away other emotions, thoughts, and distractions that sap the

energy. The mind becomes sharper, the senses more acute, thus resulting in heightened perceptiveness, with all the clutter being cleared away from the mind. In this heightened state of consciousness, one is able to connect with one’s soul at a profound level, resulting in a state of universal consciousness.

As practiced in Hinduism, the original source of the mantra meditation technique, Sanskrit words like ‘Om’, or ‘Om Namah Shivaya’, or ‘Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya’, etc., are chanted. However, any other words or sounds can be used, such as ‘Peace be to all’, or ‘I surrender myself to you’, and so on.

Mahie Gill plays Mona Darling in Zanjeer remake

Emraan Hashmi plays porn filmmaker in Shanghai

B

indu’s iconic ‘Mona Darling’ act in Zanjeer in 1973 is now being taken over by the audacious and saucy Mahie Gill. This week, Gill was signed for the coveted role above the other top contenders for the iconic part--Mallika Sherawat, Malaika Arora and Jacqueline Fernandez-- on the strength of her “raw earthy appeal”. We also hear that Mahie’s seduction of the arch-villain Teja, played by Ajit in the original and by Prakash Raj in the remake, would exceed all the limits imposed by Bindu’s conservative vamping in the 1970s.

Emraan Hashmi

E

mraan Hashmi fondly known as Bollywood’s “Serial Kisser” will now be seen playing a porn filmmaker in Dibakar Banerjee’s upcoming film Shanghai. In the film, Emraan plays the character of a small town Punjabi boy Jogi Parmar, who is a wheeler-dealer who shoots marriage videos during the day and porn films at night. When we asked Emraan Hashmi about his “promotion” from a serial kisser to a porn filmmaker, he replied cheekily, “Yes, that is quite a progression. Jogi shoots porn films after 12 in the night. I used to kiss girls

April 2012 Edition

in the morning and now I shoot porn films at night.” Surprisingly, Emraan doesn’t have any intimate scenes in this film. He says, “Yes, I don’t have any intimate scenes in this film. I have done something really different in this film. At a time I can do only one thing with my lips, I can either chew paan or kiss but in this film I chew paan.” Shanghai is a political thriller and also stars Abhay Deol, Kalki Koechlin, Prosenjit Chatterjee, Farooq Sheikh and Pitobash Tripathy. The film will hit the theatres on June 8, 2012.

While Bindu (married to her husband and to self-censorship when she reigned with her vampish voluptuousness during the 1970s) got away with slit dresses and body stocking showing thunder thighs and buxom torsos in Zanjeer, Mahie, we are told, would be doing some heavy duty love-making scenes with Prakash Raj and would also need to get into better shape for a bikini. Speaking on behalf of the film’s producers, Reliance Entertainment, Adai Mehra Productions and Flying Turtle Films, Amit Mehra said, “We definitely want Mahie’s ‘Mona Darling’ to go beyond Binduji. If Binduji became synonymous with the character in the 1970s, we want people to shout ‘Mona Darling’ at Mahie when she steps out. Those times when the first Zanjeer was made were different. Today being sexy doesn’t mean performing a cabaret in a slit dress. Mahie will have to be seen performing more horizontal acts with Prakash Raj. And she’ll definitely be seen a bikini.”

Both Mahie and Prakash Raj have been asked to shed kilos urgently. Mahie’s weight is not the only thing that goes from Bindu’s ‘Mona Darling’ act. The sizzling Asha Bhosle number ‘Diljalon Ka Dil Jala Ke’ has also been done away with. Mahie was apparently most keen to dance to Bindu’s number.

Says Mehra, “We’re doing an entirely new hip and slick club song for Mahie to dance to. With due respects Helenji and Binduji, cabarets are no longer a part of popular nightclub culture.” Says Mahie, “I was initially apprehensive about doing the part. I wondered if I’d be able to carry it off. It was the director Apoorva Lakhia who convinced me. Now I’m very excited. To recreate the original vamp ‘Mona Darling’ of the 1970s for today’s audience is a challenge. And most of my scenes are with Prakash Raj who is a very good actor. I think I’ll be able to pull it off.”

In the meanwhile all the Punjabi khana that Mahie can’t do without has been forbidden from her diet. The culture of an overweight seductress went out with Bindu.

Priyanka Chopra sizzles on stage at IPL-5 opening ceremony

T

he IPL-5 opening ceremony which took place earlier this week in Chennai saw a lot of big names but the one person who truly set the stage on fire was Priyanka Chopra. Piggy Chops took the packed audience by surprise when she went up in the air during her performance. Looking chic in a black and white sequined top, black pants and a red wrap-around skirt, the actress opened her act with her popular song ‘Aaj Ki Raat’. She displayed her sporty side as she

was pulled up in the air with a harness for an aerial act on the Don tune. The 29-year-old actress mesmerized the audience with her confidence, and landed on the stage for a power-packed dance on the number ‘Dhan Te Nan’ from the film Kaminey. She moved around in the audience, and urged the front row members, including cricketers Sourav Ganguly and Harbhajan Singh, to dance with her. Bhajji, as the latter is lovingly called, was sporting enough to get up and join her for a jig.

Later, Priyanka took to the stage again to interact with the team-members of Chennai Super Kings including MS Dhoni and Suresh Raina. She pulled Dhoni’s leg, and asked the boys to join her for a dance on the hit Tamil song ‘Nakka Mukka’. The ceremony was opened by megastar Amitabh Bachchan, who rendered a soulful poem penned by lyricist Prasoon Joshi. It was followed by a performance by Colonial Cousins, after which Priyanka took centre-stage.

mraan Hashmi’s newlyacknowledged superstar status has suddenly provided him with a certain leeway regarding his releases. That fact that he has four releases coming up in four months starting in May has prompted him to ensure the releases are spaced out to the satisfaction of the producers and the actor. Apparently, he has asked Percept Pictures to pull out of the current July release for their film Rush so that it doesn’t get lost in the other Emraan releases, namely Jannat 2, Shanghai and Raaz 3 which are being released one after another between May and August. Says a source, “Emraan has never had so many releases in

April 2012 Edition

such quick succession. And he doesn’t want audiences to suffer overkill. So he asked Percept Pictures to postpone Rush to a later date.” Shailendra Singh of Percept confirmed this. “It is true. Emraan thinks it’s unwise to release Rush during such a rush-hour of his releases. He has got Jannat 2, Shanghai and Raaz 3 along with our film Rush coming up one after the other. We decided it would be more sensible to hold our film back.” Adds Singh, “Emraan is not only the star attraction of Rush, we are also treating him like a co-producer on the project. If he thinks we should wait a while before releasing Rush, we will.”

Bipasha Basu

Bipasha will reinvent herself in ‘Raaz 3’

F

ilmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, who gave Bipasha Basu her career's first big break a decade ago with 'Raaz', says the latest installment of the film will see the actress in a new avatar Bipasha started her Bollywood career with 'Ajnabee' but got her first box office hit with the horror movie. Bhatt, 63, says he has been on the

sets and is happy with the way the Vikram Bhatt directed film has shaped up. "Bipasha is going to reinvent herself with 'Raaz 3'. She will reprise her acting skills and will dazzle the screen. We are happy that she is back with us and don't want to miss the opportunity to bring the best out of her. She did a fabulous job in 'Raaz', which gave her the due recognition in the industry, " Bhatt told. The filmmaker, who took a break from direction after the release of Sanjay Dutt's 'Kartoos' in 1999, has no plans to go behind the camera again despite giving meaningful films like 'Arth', 'Saaransh' and 'Zakhm'. "I am bored of making films. I have given my 12 years to the industry and always felt that you are not a human being if you don't have a story to tell.

After all these years, I am concentrating on making stars out of normal actors and churning out good stories from new filmmakers, " said Bhatt, who was in the capital to launch Aruna Mukim's book 'Doosra Rukh'. Bhatt has offered Indo-Canadian porn star Sunny Leone her first break in Bollywood with 'Jism 2' and given a different look to Kunal Khemu in 'Blood Money'. "There are some faces in the industry which need to be nurtured. They have immense talent but they are not getting right scripts. Sunny Leone and Kunal Khemu are such actors. Sunny is working hard for the film and I have complete faith on her that she will come out as a surprise package, " he said. In 1987, Bhatt turned producer and set up his own banner

Vishesh Films, with his brother Mukesh Bhatt, which is known for making films with bold content. With films like 'Hate Story', 'Dangerous Ishq' and 'Jannat 2' awaiting their release, Bhatt feels a new genre of films has taken the front seat in the industry. "Erotic component in the films has increased for past few years. The world wide web has changed the way of our society and paved a way to the bold content in films too, " Bhatt said. Bhatt has made many films inspired by his personal life. He is looking forward to start the production of 'Aashiqui 2', the sequel of 1990 film 'Aashiqui', which was based on his first love. The sequel too will have elements from his life. "There is a partial reference of my life in this film but director Vishal Mahadkar is writing a new script, " he said.

Kill Bill Series with

Neetu Chandra A

blackbelt in martial arts, Neetu Chandra is done with the veil. Lately seen immersed in efforts to fit into the image of the good domesticated future wife to actor Randeep Hooda, Neetu had consciously discarded her bindaas bold and provocative image for the sake of love, commitment and impending matrimony. But now we hear the relationship has for all practical purposes reached a dedend. With Hooda’s career on a sudden if not a steep upturn, we hear Neetu is tired of fitting into the Good Girlfriend Ideal Wife-material slot. While the industry was talking of a wedding date Neetu we hear has other plans. She is ready to strike back on screen, this time in a desi avatar of Uma Thurman’s kickass role in Kill Bill. The stunts would be on a par with what our Bollywood he-men do in action scenes. In collaboration with producer

Siddhartha Jain Neetu will create what is secretly being referred to as the Female Dhoom franchise. “Not like some actresses who did a few flips and somersaults and had everyone going wahwah over their derringdo. Neetu will actually be performing all the stunts that are associated with the action genre. She is as trained and equipped for the athletic stuff as Vidyut Jamwal who made such a terrific impact on Force, ” says the excited producer Siddhartha Jain, as he works out the nittygritty of the gritty series. Neetu who is the only certified blackbelter in martial arts would be performing all the stunts in the films that are are going to be made in the series. Says Neetu, “With due respects my female colleagues like Deepika Padukone in Chandni Chowk To China or Priyanka Chopra in Don who have

thrashed around their limbs in so-called action scenes, I don’t think we’ve had a genuine female action star since Fearless Nadia. I feel we’re ready for some kickass female action. I’ve trained in the martial arts for 11 years. So far none of my roles has been action-oriented. Of late I had begun to get very restless. There’s a lot of pentup energy within me. ”

Could the effort to be the demure sedate lady in waiting have taken its toll on Neetu’s energy level? She bursts out indignantly, “I don’t know where these rumours of marriage are coming from. It was only when a very dear filmmaker friend recently asked if I’d like to do his film that I got to know there was a prevalent belief that I’m getting ready to quit. For the record I’m not getting married for another five years. ” Another relationship in the entertainment business has fallen prey to the pressures of career management. RIP.

IPL 5: Rohit Sharma snatches win with a six off Daniel Christian’s last ball

A

Mumbai Indians

Mumbai-Hyderabad match is never devoid of drama and suspense. The two sides, who have an even record against each other in the IPL, produced some exciting cricket as there was a perfect blend of huge hits, flurry of wickets and a lot of melodrama in the middle. In a low-scoring thriller, Rohit Sharma’s level-headed approach helped Mumbai pull off a five-wicket win. It was heartbreak for the home side and especially for Dale Steyn, whose fiery 3-12 spell, had given his side a huge chance to win. In the end, however, it was Rohit who stole the thunder. With Mumbai needing 18 off the last over, James Franklin stuck Daniel Christian’s first ball for a four and then took a two and stole a bye off the third ball. With 11 needed off the last three balls, Rohit swung his bat wildly and connected a full toss outside the off-stump. The ball sailed over point for a six. Rohit then ran two off the next ball, barely surviving a run-out attempt. He then hammered the last ball over the long on fence to bring up victory. Rohit’s unbeaten 73 came off 50 balls with four fours and six sixes. Earlier, during the Hyderabad innings, there was high drama in the 13th over bowled by Munaf Patel which saw the dismissal of skipper Kumar Sangakkara. Sangakkara attempted a drive only to edge it on to his stumps. Even as the bails went up in the air, the ball

hit keeper Dinesh Karthik’s pads and then hit the stumps again. Sangakkara stood his ground even as the Mumbai players vehemently protested. Umpire Anil Chowdhary consulted his colleague JD Colete,

who ruled it not out. Harbhajan got into an argument with Colete and Patel and the other Mumbai players took on Chowdhary. After animated discussion, the umpires referred the decision to third umpire Dharmasena, who ruled San-

gakkara (14) out. The entire exercise took more than five minutes. What baffles one is the reluctance of the umpires to straightaway refer the decision to the third umpire. In the end, they made a mess of

what should have been an easy decision to make. It was Shikhar Dhawan who helped resurrect the Hyderabad innings after early hiccups. The southpaw tore into his former franchisee’s attack in a blistering display of power hitting.

Thank God I am home:

Yuvraj Singh

When Yuvraj Singh set foot in Delhi after India had won the World Cup, it was his “happiest moment in the capital”. A year later, the batting star returned to the capital after another “victory”. This time, he just looked relieved as he tried to keep his emotions in check in the face of a battery of cameras and microphones.

April 2012 Edition

Yuvraj’s homecoming, “Thank God I am home” was all he said. But the sentence captured his rollercoaster ride through hell and back these past few months. Yuvraj was returning from England after successfully completing the four-month chemotherapy course in the US for treating a malignant tumour on his lung. He walked out of the T 3 departure lounge through a side gate at 10am and was greeted by a sea of mediapersons and fans. His mother, Shabnam Singh, who was by Yuvi’s side as he battled his illness in Indianapolis (US), termed the Team India all-rounder’s return after fighting off cancer as “having won the World Cup again”.

As fans and onlookers greeted him with loud cheers, the southpaw acknowledged them with a wave of his hand. He then quickly got into a waiting car and drove straight to his Gurgaon house. There too, a fresh set of followers and mediapersons welcomed him. Overwhelmed, the nostalgic cricketer emerged on his balcony, waving his hands, smiling and thanking everybody. “I am very happy that Yuvi is back. The entire nation has been so good and he is so grateful that everyone is there. He does not have to see any doctor for another three months. For now, he will just take rest,” Shabnam told TOI. Sources close to the family said for next 10 days Yuvraj will be at home, resting

and recuperating from jet-lag. Sources confirmed that he will not rush back to the field. Doctors who treated him in the US have said he shouldn’t push himself.

“He will not start everything immediately. If he is feeling good after a gym session, he can continue to do that,” Yuvraj’s diet will be normal. His mother said that he will be on ‘organic food’ cooked at home. Another family source said Yuvraj plans to watch the IPL matches of his Pune team in May. “Right now, his only plan is to rest at home,” he said.

Indian fighter Anup Kumar makes mark in MMA

I

f you blinked, you would have missed it. American Todd Duffee needed all of 44 seconds to walk away with a win against Neil Grove in a clash of the heavyweights as the Super Fight League (SFL) left the vociferous Chandigarh crowds hollering for more at the exhibition-cum-circus grounds, Sector 17. The Duffee-Grove encounter the main event of the night - was over in a flash as Grove couldn’t recover from a killer punch that Duffee landed with his right. The advantage allowed Duffee to sit on Grove and punch away before the referee thought he had seen enough and awarded the fight to the American via a technical knockout (TKO). The muchanticipated, 84kg catchweight clash between experienced fighters Alexander Shlemenko and Minowaman wasn’t meant to last three rounds given their fetish for quick finishes and the bout stuck to script when the Russian walked away with a TKO in a little over two minutes of Round One. Known for his unorthodox style of fighting, Shlemenko was all over Minowaman, who suffered combination of punches followed by a fatal knee in the head before the referee decided the Japanese fighter couldn’t continue. Rookie Indian fighter Anup Kumar made a blistering start to his MMA career when he executed a perfect rear naked choke on Sri Lankan Dilanga Rathnaweera to win the 60kg catchweight bout by way of submission. Touted as a fighter with a bright future, Anup lived up to his cage name of ‘pit bull’, charging Rathnaweera at every possible chance. His risktaking was rewarded when he got in to the perfect position that left the Lankan with no option but to tap out. Bharat Kandare and Ricky Singh - the other Indians making their debut - gave the crowd much to cheer for when they nailed their featherweight and lightweight bouts with relative ease.

IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) Dr. C.R.S. Kumar

WHAT IS IBS? IBS (Irritable bowel syndrome) is also known as spastic colitis, mucus colitis and nervous colon syndrome. Around one in five Australians experiences the unpleasant symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) at some time. It is a long-term (chronic) gastrointestinal disorder that causes wide range of complaints. The most common symptoms include from abdominal pain, bloating, mucous in stools, irregular bowel habits, and alternating diarrhoea and constipation. Although it is a chronic condition, symptoms tend to wax and wane over the years.

CAUSES IBS cause great distress among patients. According to the conventional system it is an idiopathic, functional, gastrointestinal disorder, whereas According to Ayurvedic Medicine this is related to “Grahani” and the causes are explained in detail in the ancient books such as Charaka samhitha , Madhva Nidhana. According to the modern science it is a functional disturbance and it is mainly associated with stress. It is believed to be a disorder of motor and sensory functions of GI tract. According to Ayurveda it is related to Grahani. The main reasons are include improper eating habits, drinking, exercising too soon after eating, forcing and restraining natural urges and taking chemical drugs. Due to the above mentioned reasons there will increase accumulation of toxins (AMA) in the digestive system and blocks the circulation and finally cause disruption to the function of the GI (Includes dhoshic imbalance) and results in improper bowel moments and other symptoms. Vata type or the constipation

type of IBS which is mainly dominated by dryness of skin, abnormal mucus secretions, alteration of constipation and diarrhoea, bloating, insomnia, anal fissure and severe weight loss. Pitta type or the diarrhoea type of IBS which is mainly dominated by hotness, burning sensation, thirst, irritability, excessive sweat or perspiration, heartburn, fever and foul smelling stools. Kaphs type or the dysentery type of IBS which is mainly dominated by mucus, nausea, indigestion, heaviness in the abdomen, sluggish bowel moments and lethargy. Tridhosic type of IBS is mainly dominated by the three humors and consists all complaints of three different types of IBS. TREATMENT IN AYURVEDA According to Ayurvedic philosophy it is mainly triggered by the Vata dhosha and the treatment should initially address the Vata. Whereas, Modern medical science mainly treats the symptoms but the root cause by administrating Anti Spasmodic and anti cholinergic drugs to reduce the pain and

bloating, anti diarrheal, anti constipation, psychotropic agents such as tricyclic depressants and anxiolytics and serotonin receptor agonist and antagonists are used to treat the other symptoms. The side effects of anti cholinergic and other drugs include but not confined to urinary retention, tachycardia, dry mouth and constipation etc. According to Ayurveda the treatments starts from the behavioural and lifestyle modifications, drug therapy, detoxification and rejuvenation treatments to avoid the aggravated dhoshas (Humors). It mainly involves meditation, pranayama, doing asanas, and maintains regular routine like regular sleeping and eating and avoiding stressful situations etc. Generally a SATVIC diet and life style is highly advisable to prevent and cure the symptoms of IBS. Few Ayurvedic Life Style Recommendations: 1. Increase dietary fibre 2. Restore healthy balance of bacteria in GI tract 3. Indentify and avoid food intolerances

4. Mind – Body therapy 5. Need to know the Ayurvedic compatibility of the food ingredients 6. Timely eating and sleeping habits 7. Regular physical exercise Finally, IBS is not a life threatening disorder but it makes life more miserable. It is highly important for the patients and practitioners to be aware that the cure may take time and it not just simply enough with medications, but it needs a life style and behavioural change to prevent and control IBS. You may ask your personal query to Dr Kumar via Email drsathi@aurahealth.com.au or by phone 0402 282 745 regarding any of your health problems. You will be offered authentic Ayurvedic information and an opinion, as to what best can be done pertaining to your ailment. airy food could be essential for a healthy brain, a new study suggests. The study, by US and Australian researchers, involving 1,000 adults, found those who regularly have dairy products such as milk, cheese and yoghurt score better on tests of mental ability than people who never, or rarely, consume dairy products, the Daily Mail reported. Although the research, published in the International Dairy Journal, needs following-up, as it did not conclusively establish the link between dairy and fatty diets and brain power, it highlights an intriguing line of research. It follows another US study, involving 104 pensioners, where scientists found older people with higher levels of beneficial fats

in their blood had less brain shrinkage typical of Alzheimer’s disease. These beneficial fats - omega-3 essential fats - are found in foods such as oily fish. The study, published in Neurology, the journal of the American Academy of Neurology, measured the levels of different fats in people’s blood, rather than simply relying on their reports of what they tended regularly to eat. It’s now well established from brain-tissue studies that our mental functions depend heavily on a good supply of fat, the Mail said. Our brain is composed of 60 per cent fat. The brain cells are insulated by sheaths of myelin composed of 75 per cent fat. This myelin fat needs to be replaced constantly.

bad thing, but long periods of sitting and lack of stretching can cause postural problems. Regular stretching can address these specific postural imbalances. Do these stretching exercises in the prescribed order every day for a great pain-free body. Relax the back: Lie on your back, knees bent at 90 degrees, placing your calves on the seat of a chair. ood posture goes beyond sitting up straight. Slouching over a computer keyboard all day creates a chain reaction throughout your body that can result in shoulder, neck and back pain. Not pretty. Here are six simple stretches you can do to improve your posture. Good posture means good health. Sitting is part of our every day, even if we lead an active lifestyle. Sitting isn’t necessarily a

ly, letting your low back settle into the floor. Hold the position for 5 minutes. Stretch the chest: Stay in the ‘relax the back’ position. Lace your fingers, palms together, with your arms extended above your chest toward the ceiling. Extend your arms, keeping your elbows straight, over your head to the floor behind you. Repeat 30 times with a steady, controlled movement. Back-friendly crunches: Lie on your back with your feet on the wall and your knees bent less than 90 degrees (glutes should only be about four to six inches from wall and knees almost touching chest). Lace your fingers behind your head to support your neck. Keep your elbows back while looking at the ceiling. Exhale as you use

your stomach muscles to lift your shoulders, elbows and head off the floor, then lower. Be sure you don’t pull on your head with your hands. Repeat for two sets of 30 reps. Kneeling hip-flexor stretch: Kneel (preferably on a padded floor). Bring your right knee into a 90 degree angle and push your left leg back so it’s at an angle where you feel stretch in the front of your hip. Keep your legs parallel to each other and place your hands on your right knee and let your hips sink forward to the floor, keeping your upper body straight. Do not lean forward. Hold for 1 minute and switch legs. Supine hip-flexor stretch: Lie on your back with your right leg bent and resting on a chair at a

Drinking two cups of tea daily may help increase a woman’s chances of becoming pregnant, a new study has revealed. It found women were 27 per cent more likely to become pregnant if they regularly drank tea compared with those who did not, the Daily Mail reported. On the other hand, the same research also revealed that consuming two cola-style fizzy drinks daily apparently reduces a woman’s prospects of conceiving - and it makes no difference if the cola is a diet or sugary version. Women who drank these soft drinks at least twice a day cut their chances of becoming pregnant by 20 per cent. There was no effect on the chances of pregnancy for women who chose to drink coffee. The study took into consideration a group of 3,600 women who were actively trying to have a baby. The study’s author, Professor Elizabeth Hatch, of Boston University in the United States, wanted to find out if caffeine intake had any impact on women trying for a baby. Although there have been other studies on the subject, their results have not been conclu-

sive. Prof Hatch observed each of the volunteers for a year. Danish women were chosen for the research as every Danish citizen is given a civil registration number at birth, allowing health officials to recruit and then screen individuals through the Internet. The women, with an average age of 28, formed the largest group ever studied to evaluate a link between caffeine consumption and pregnancy. “We found that women who drank tea two or three times a day did have a 27 per cent increased chance of becoming pregnant. We don’t know how they took the tea or if they added milk or lemon, but they had this increased chance of getting pregnant over women who did not drink tea at all,” Prof Hatch said. Green tea, such as that being picked in this field in Japan, was not found to increase a woman’’s chances of getting pregnant “It may be linked to caffeine but clearly there may be other factors linked with the women’s lifestyle or there may be beneficial properties in tea itself.” “I think drinking two or three cups of tea a day for anyone wishing to get pregnant will be

fine. I would love to say tea is a miracle cure to get pregnant but that is not realistic. There may be other factors. The tea drinkers tended to be older women and there may be something

else in their diet or lifestyle that helped. “Tea contains a lot of antioxidants which are very good for male and female fertility,” she added.

90 degree angle. Place your left leg straight on the floor, keeping your toes pointed up so your knee and foot do not roll out. Place your arms straight out from your shoulders with your palms up. Breathe deeply and relax your body. Remain in this position for 10 minutes, then repeat on other side. Airbench: Sit against the wall with your feet shoulder-width apart and knees bent at 90 degrees, heels straight under or slightly in front (not behind) of your knees. Keep your feet pointing straight ahead, push your lower back into wall and keep pressure on heels. Press your shoulders back, keeping your head up, and relax your shoulders, neck, arms and hands. Hold for 90 seconds.

5 foods that boost your energy Glucose - This component is found in carbs. Yes! You need carbohydrates; it is a means of providing energy to the brain, muscle and the nervous system. Fiber - It has several reasons to be part of your daily diet, since it curtails certain types of cancer, improves memory as well as energy, and aids smooth digestion. Fiber takes longer to digest, which results in higher energy supply. Dry fruits -Almonds, dried figs and cashews may be a great accompaniment with alcohol, but there’s more to it than meets the eye. Unsalted nuts, closest to their natural state, contain magnesium that converts sugar into energy, while dried figs purge your blood of toxins. Lean meat - Meat eaters will love this one. Whether you love chicken, pork, beef or turkey you’re assured of sustained energy. ‘But’ it has to be skinned and trimmed, in other words, as lean as possible. Fatty fish - It’s strange that meat has to be lard-free while fish needs to be fatty. But before you reach for those frying pans, what we are looking for is Omega 3 in fish - a natural oil that your body needs for general health.

Anaemia in Children >> WHAT IS ANAEMIA: The body needs iron to make Haemoglobin, the red pigment in the red blood cells that transport oxygen. If there isn’t enough iron available, Haemoglobin production is limited, which in turns affects the production of red blood cells (RBCs). A decreased amount of Hemoglobin and RBCs in the bloodstream is known as anemia. Because RBCs are needed to carry oxygen throughout the body, anemia results in less oxygen reaching the cells and tissues, affecting their function. CHILDHOOD ANAEMIA: Iron-deficiency anemia (IDA), often caused by insufficient iron intake, is the major cause of anemia in childhood. Although it is become considerably lesser in developed countries due to fortified infant formulas and cereals, it is still a major problem around the world. There are many different forms of anaemia, ranging from the normal iron-deficiency anaemia, vitamin B12 anaemia and folic acid deficiency to the more serious Sickle Cell Anaemia, Aplastic Anaemia etc. In this article we are mainly dealing with normal, usual forms that occur in children. (It is important to remember that Homeopathy can help as a

Raj Kothuru complementary medicine to aid recovery in more complicated cases of anaemia but traditional medicine intervention is of utmost importance. CAUSES: Iron deficiency anaemia is the most common form of anaemia. Iron is an essential part of Haemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying protein in blood. The body gets iron through certain foods and also reuses iron from old red blood cells. Iron-deficiency anemia doesn’t develop immediately. Instead, a person progresses through stages of iron deficiency, beginning with iron depletion, in which the amount of iron in the body is reduced while the iron in RBCs remains constant. If iron depletion isn’t corrected, it progresses to iron deficiency, eventually leading to IDA. During infancy and adolescence, the body demands more iron. Kids are at higher risk for IDA through these periods of rapid growth because they may not be getting enough iron in their diet to make up for the increased needs. Iron deficiency most commonly affects babies between 9 - 24 months old. Babies are born with about 500 milligrams (mg) of iron in their bodies. By the time they reach adulthood

they need to have about 5,000 mg. Children need to absorb an average of 1 mg per day of iron to keep up with the needs of their growing bodies. Since children only absorb about 10% of the iron they eat, most children need to receive 8-10 mg of iron per day. Breastfed babies need less, because iron is absorbed 3 times better when it is in breast milk. Mother’s milk is normally rich in iron easily absorbed by the infant. An iron-poor diet is a common cause of iron deficiency. Also drinking too much cow’s milk is a common cause of iron deficiency in young children because cow’s milk contains little iron and can get in the way of iron absorption. Cow’s milk also can cause problems in the intestine that lead to blood loss and increased risk of anemia. Absorption and assimilation is also one of the major problems. Other vitamins (like Vitamin C for example) are required in the body to absorb iron. Also if the assimilation is not good, the child will suffer from anaemia. The adolescent growth spurt is another high-risk period. Low iron levels are an important cause of decreased attention span, reduced alertness, learning and behaviour difficulties, both in young children and adolescents.

Iron deficiency in children can be related to lead poisoning (especially those living in older homes) or slow bleeding. SYMPTOMS OF ANAEMIA: • Blue-tinged or very pale whites of eyes • Blood in the stools • Brittle nails • Decreased appetite (especially in children) • Fatigue, Headache, Irritability • Pale skin color (pallor) • Shortness of breath, tiredness • Sore tongue • Unusual food cravings (called pica) • Weakness, low attention span etc There may be no symptoms if anaemia is mild. FOODS THAT HELP: Iron-rich foods include raisins, meats (especially liver), fish, poultry, egg yolks, legumes (peas and beans), and whole-grain bread, dried fruits, spinach, prunes, dates, molasses, liver, dairy products, beets, fenugreek leaves and seeds, lettuce, almonds, honey, soy etc all help combat anaemia. Yoga asanas help increase digestion and proper assimilation of the food. Pranayama increases the

intake of oxygen into the system, thereby assisting the problem. ROLE OF HOMEOPATHY IN CASES OF ANAEMIA: Homeopathic remedies attempt to stimulate the healthy portion of bone marrow to improve cell production, improve general vitality and well being, to control bleeding, beneficial in countering side-effects associated with conventional therapy. Homeopathic Bio Chemic tissue salts like Ferrum Metallicum are very helpful in providing the body, easily assimilable and directly absorbable form of iron needed by the body to combat the anaemia. Unlike a standard Iron supplement for all, Homeopathic remedies are very specific to the total set of symptoms experienced/ displayed the child for more targeted action. Excellent remedies exist. Also Homeopathy remedies, as they do not adversely interfere with conventional medication, are absolutely safe to have synergetic effect of treatment. With treatment, the outcome is likely to be good. In most cases, the blood counts will return to normal in 2 months. You may ask your personal query to Raj Kothuru (Homeopath) via email drraj@aurahealth.com.au or phone 0425 761 826 / (03) 9077 5044 regarding any of your health problems. You will be offered authentic information and an opinion as to what best can be done pertaining to your ailment.

Got a headache? Blame it on your diet

A

headache is a discomfort or a pressure-like sensation in the head. A migraine is a common type of headache that usually occurs on one side of the head. Dietician Dr Sunita Dube agrees that one’s diet can affect headaches and says, “A family history of migraine, apart from stress, food and beverages may be responsible for up to 30 per cent of migraines. If you consider some other triggers such as hormonal changes, stress, sleeping habits, and depression, it’s possible that the percentage is actually higher.” One of the most common reasons for headaches due to dietary changes is sud-

denly switching to a very low calorie diet, in other words, crash dieting. Agrees consultant nutritionist Niti Desai, “This can lead to headaches, especially if these diets cut down or eliminate carbohydrates completely. The brain can only use carbohydrates as fuel. Headaches can also set in due to low blood sugar levels. Also, if you start skipping meals or have long intervals between your meals, headache sets in. Even a very low water intake can trigger headaches.” Tyramine is an amino acid that has been thought to trigger headaches by reducing serotonin levels in the brain and affecting the dilation of blood vessels
