VIEWS OF SYLT

ART - PHOTOGRAPHY - PHILOSOPHY

MAKING OF When ocean, wind, waves, weathering and erosion nibble on the Trunk of a ship,or algae and barnacles cling to it's body, the human must intervene. Therefore, after the winter, when the ships are let back into the water, it is first ensured that the trunk is cleared of all barnacles, old paint and rust. This job is done by the "grinding disk", leaving extraordinarily unique, colorful fragments on the ship. With a sharp eye, these can be captured to look like stunning and mysterious landscapes. On a deeper level, these "views of the ships" mirror the typical landscape of the island sylt, hence the name "views of sylt". The fragments mirror many parts of the island, going from the beaches to the dune landscape with it's varying light and dark shades, to of course the mesmerizing sunsets.

In the following pages, I will present to you nine of these very individual fragments. All pictures where taken without a tripod or special lighting, but simply out of my hand with a simple camera. The photography was taken in the small ports of 'munkmarsch' and 'rantum' on the island sylt. By now, all of the fragments that I have captured for eternity have been covered with paint. The ships will stay perfectly polished until their surrounding repeats the procedure and restarts the endless cycle. In the end, this will leave fragments as unique as the last ones. Therefore, take some time to make your own interpretation of these original "Views of Sylt". Sincerely, Rainer Maria Stark
