INTRODUCTION Railings Gallery is delighted to present ‘The Inheritance of Love’, a solo exhibition by London based artist, Louise de Lima. Louise de Lima uses paint, collage and mixed media, to produce abstract works that convey a broad repertoire of forms, gestures and surfaces. The rhythms within the works range from gentle meditations through to bold exclamations; shapes placed with tremendous sensitivity through to drips splashed with determined ferocity. These powerful abstractions push materials to their limits, presenting a rich vocabulary of painterly languages that speak of deeper meanings. The source material that de Lima draws upon is as wide ranging as her mark making: memories, poetry and philosophy, are all meditated on by de Lima when her brush meets the canvas. Discovering the references in her work is like an archeological process, in which artifacts are recovered through the layers of paint. The works in this exhibition connect everyday human endeavour to higher spiritual concerns, where the artist’s subjective interests are poured into a universal language of abstraction. There is a sense of shifting seasons and the passage of time, where memories of things long lost meet with the here and now. Railings Gallery London, 2019

T H E I N H E R I TA N C E O F L O V E My work is made up of many layers, using different textures and mediums. I particularly gravitate towards antique materials, which I like to work into my paintings. Sometimes the materials can’t be seen, but they’re there to build up the layers and enrich the work. At the same time, I place them there to symbolize our history, inheritance and memories. I think about those who’ve paved the way and continue to inspire and enrich us. Working in this way allows me to feel a connection to the past and think about the part I play in this story. My works are my daybooks, musings and a way of making sense of life. During the preparation and development of a show, I find myself drawn to particular pieces of work that inspire me. For a long time I’ve been fascinated by the works of Rainer Maria Rilke, through many of his letters and poems. Whilst painting for this show I’ve been reflecting on his words. One of the things that Rilke talks about and that I’ve reflected on deeply is the word Solitude. “What is necessary, after all, is only this: solitude, vast inner solitude. To walk inside yourself and meet no one for hours - that is what you must be able to attain.” – Rainer Maria Rilke
