There may be more beautiful times—but this one is ours. —Jean-Paul Sartre “This all started when I could not take any more news. I was going about my daily domestic life: walking the dog, doing a food shop, watching the seasons change while bombs are going off and disasters are happening that I have no relation to, control over, or complete understanding of.” Kate Lewis has always spoken the language of design. Since completing her master’s degree at the Royal College of Art in 1999, she has been transforming textiles into textured, multi-dimensional, manipulated fabrics that have been featured in the collections of design houses such as Louis Vuitton, Calvin Klein, Chanel, among others; but it was the onslaught of television news, while on a business trip to the US, that inspired this latest project to blossom. Borne out of the resulting anxiety, Kate found herself—quite literally—dissecting the news; going back to basics with scissors, newspaper, and glue as a way of processing the state of world affairs. What began as a calming act of low-tech creativity has resulted is a beautifully multi-layered and subconscious fusion of nature, current events, design and media. The flower, a fleeting beauty, signifies places and seasons. They are present for all of our major life events: births, deaths, weddings, birthdays. They serve as symbols through history. They are balm, they are bane. Without flowers, there would be no fruit. At first glance, you see a beautiful image of a flower, but upon closer examination the story emerge; fragmented pieces of history, staccato words, a familiar font, a sly bit of irony, the symbolism of the bloom: A cherry blossom beginning to bud, the explosive start to spring in London, tells the story of the bombings in Syria. The wispy greenbell of summer, inspired by the Guardian’s coverage of the Windrush scandal, conveys the ship that brought many of that generation to the UK in the 40’s as well as the earlier slaves ships. The incurve chrysanthemum of autumn, symbolizing death, tells the Times’ story of the Jamal Khashoggi murder in the Saudi embassy. The bright red winter berries of the ilex, taken from The Sun’s story of the parrot that fell in love with an Amazon Alexa. A year of flowers, a year of news. Sloane Warren

This digital catalogue features images and details of original works in paper collage by Kate Lewis. Created over the course of a year, these meticulous collages reconfigure newspaper cuttings into beautiful botanical illustrations. Responding to the most prevalent news stories of the day, these floral images make permanent a fleeting, disposable news cycle that often moves too fast for us to process. The works retreat from the maelstrom of online media and in, the face of fake news and alternative facts, return to nature in full bloom.
