WIDER RAGLAN COMMUNITY INVITED TO SEE AND TRY COURTS FOR THEMSELVES

Rangitahi’s new recreational courts are open – and a community celebration of the milestone is set for Saturday June 8.
The tennis and half basketball courts – six months in the making – are the first public amenities to be built on the as yet unnamed Rangitahi reserve overlooking Opotoru estuary.
And Rangitahi project general manager Sam Laity wants “the whole of Raglan” to make use of the courts.
An exhibition match on the astro-turf tennis court is planned for 3pm on the Saturday but all Raglan residents are welcome to bring racquets and have a hit-around, Sam says.
“Come check it out … bring your gear or borrow Rangitahi’s and have some fun,” is his message to the Raglan community.
There will be games and prizes to be won, he adds, along with some food provided.
Food trucks Casa Loco and Pasta Paradiso will also be on site.
Waikato District Council mayor Jacqui Church, who is officiating at the afternoon event, says the new courts are a “fantastic asset” and clearly boost the recreational opportunities in Raglan.
“Quality amenities contribute to establishing healthy communities and that aligns with our vision – which is building liveable, thriving, and connected communities.”
A children’s playground with slides, swings and a climbing-frame is yet to come to complete recreational facilities on the 3179 square-metre reserve, with some later commercial development and a public swimming pool to be built nearby on land where plantings and parking spaces have been established.
Rangitahi peninsula’s 117-hectare lifestyle subdivision now boasts 145 finished houses, with a further 44 under construction. The ambitious project on former farmland was launched back in 2017 – with building beginning two years later – and is now roughly at the halfway mark.

WhenKarla Stevenson saw the news about disability not-for-profit StarJam needing urgent financial support, the Monster Company owner and creative knew she had to do something to help.
StarJam has launched an emergency appeal and Karla has designed a You are a Star tile to raise money. The organisation is dedicated to empowering young people facing challenges due to disability, through music, dance and performance, and Karla’s friend Maisie is one hundreds of participants nationwide who benefits.
“I learned that StarJam is so good for Maisie’s confidence, her learning, and just being able to be part of a community.”
Maisie, who has Down Syndrome, is Karla’s good friend Becs Dowling’s daughter.
Long time locals, Maisie and Becs recently moved back to their home in Raglan after a few years in Hamilton.
The 21-year-old loves StarJam; Maisie has been a ‘jammer’ since she was 8 and before that she was a regular at Patti Mitchley’s dance classes and performances.
“I love it. I love dancing and the games we play and the exercises we do and my friends. I love the concert and the disco. It’s the best,” Maisie enthuses.
“It's just a really special place for her to be around her peers. Where she can be herself and express her creativity in a really safe environment,” Becs says.
“They also do a little five-minute performance at the end of each workshop and Maisie loves to be in the limelight.”
As well as being a haven, StarJam is also a place where Maisie has found her ’tribe’ and sense of belonging in the world.
“If she didn’t have it, she would be even more isolated, because she doesn't have much on in her week at the moment, and to be around people who she feels safe with and accepted by is really important to her.”
It’s also a place where Becs has found a supportive and caring community of like-minded parents and caregivers.
“StarJam felt really special to me, and I've met such lovely people who are in a similar boat to me and they are accepting of each other and our differences.”
Maisie’s younger sister Zoe has also helped at StarJam for the past few years.
“They really rely on the volunteers,” Becs says.
At the end of the year, StarJam holds a grand finale performance, which provides the opportunity for the jammers to shine on the big stage in front of family and friends.
“The big show has the best vibe and energy. All the parents get involved and it’s really fun and uplifting,” Becs says.
The organisation has been running for 22 years, and evidence of its popularity is in the waitlists for every one of the 10 locations.

SCULPTURE MARKS FULL CIRCLE FOR CANCER JOURNEY

Asculpture by local artist Simon Te Wheoro unveiled recently at Waikato Hospitals stands as a tribute to the exceptional mahi of the staff at the oncology department.
For Simon and his wife Jamie Haenga, the department provided life-saving cancer treatment to their daughter Ātea more than 10-years ago.
Diagnosed with Wilms tumor, a rare kidney cancer that mainly affects children, Ātea was just two years old when she underwent an operation to remove the affected kidney and then several months of chemo treatment.
“It was such a blur at the time but we feel so blessed that the treatment was successful. When the cancer was discovered, it had taken 90 per cent of her kidney at her young age,” Jamie says.
The couple say the staff were incredible throughout Ātea’s cancer journey, but the sculpture is also an acknowledgement of the support they received by Raglan locals.
“When Ātea was diagnosed with cancer, Dave Hanna from Ray White approached us about running a 43k hikoi (walk) around the maunga (Karioi) to raise some funds. And we just had this amazing influx of whānau and community support for the fundraiser,” Simon says.
“Life goes on hold when you're going through that whole cancer process at Starship and Waikato Hospital, and it’s awesome that it has come around full circle with the sculpture.”
Ātea, soon to be 13, still goes in for annual check-ups, but she is cancer-free and, while there are some things she can’t participate in like contact sports, Ātea is living life to the fullest.
“She loves kapa haka, dancing, singing and performing,” Jamie says.
“And sleeping,” Simon cheekily adds.
With the cancer somewhat behind them, it’s been all-go on the carving front for Simon.
As well as the sculpture at the hospital, he has had largescale commissioned pieces unveiled at Maeroa Intermediate, the Raglan Wharf, and a waharoa (gateway) at Waikaretu School carved in collaboration with Kawharu Greensill and Te Reinga Te Tai.
It’s these large works and the increasing demand for ta moko (traditional tattoo) that are keeping Simon busy and the Toi Hauauru Art Studio & Gallery closed to the public.
And now his plans to open up at Labour Weekend are on hold after being chosen for this year’s ‘21st International Larvikite Sculpture Symposium’ in Norway.
One of nine sculptors chosen from 120 International applicants, Simon will be the first Māori and New Zealander to ever take part in this prestigious event.
“I just feel so fortunate to be going, it’s such a cool opportunity and an amazing honour to represent Whaingaroa, Aotearoa/ New Zealand. I’ll be working on some massive works using the local stone larvikite.”
This is the second international symposium Simon has attended and he has his eye on more in the upcoming years.
“It’s an opportunity to open up doors internationally but also to work alongside sculptors from around the world.”

Billy Stairmand has returned to the top of the podium taking out the King and Queen of the Point, held 2426 May 2024 and presented by Quiksilver, Roxy and Backdoor, the local surfer being joined by Aimee Brown (Gt Barrier) who claimed the Open Women’s Division.
In a wild day of action, Aotearoa’s top surfers were confronted with strong southwest winds and a grunty 2.0m swell that pushed many participants to their limits.
Stairmand effectively went head-tohead with Kehu Butler (Mnt) in the final with both surfers notching up excellent rides, Stairmand amassing 17.50 points to Butler’s 17.07.
“Every second year by the sounds of it. It is good to get another victory at home,” exclaimed Stairmand about his win.
“It is good practice for Krui, I am off there tonight for the first event of the regional qualifying series. And then off to Tahiti for some more training, and the Olympics coming up too,” added Stairmand of his busy schedule over the next three months.
“It was a wild final, super windy, but real fun waves. I like those conditions; if you pick the right waves you can do some big turns and the boys were going for it. Having Kehu back always pushes my surfing; he brings out the better competitor in me,” said Stairmand.
It was Butler that pushed Stairmand the entire final, first notching up an 8.9 point ride before Stairmand answered back with a 9.17 on his final ride, the highest of the final. In a final effort to hunt down the win, Butler came up short of the 8.61 required with an 8.1
Navryn Malone (Rag) finished third in the final, surfing his fourth heat of the day and running out of steam while Callum Chuter (Mnt) finished in fourth place.

Barrier Island surfer Aimee Brown who today came through with a win in the Open Women’s Division to close out the NZ Surf Series on a high.
Brown finished the final with a total of 12.03 points, her last gasp effort for the win pushing her from fourth to first with a 6.83 point ride for committed surfing.
“Pretty hard out there, I am not going to lie, I am pretty unfit at the moment,” said Brown.
“For the first 15 minutes I was getting smoked from all the young girls paddling rings around me, they are so lively, but I guess I kept fighting and got a few waves in the end,” she added.
“I thought I needed to do something big on that last wave, that was my last opportunity, so it was good to put it up there and complete that turn,” said Brown who has had a break from competing over recent years.
“It has been really good for myself and my mental health and I am trying to enjoy competing now and not put pressure on myself,” she added.
In a final with three opponents under the age of 15, Brown was quick to heap praise on her counterparts. “All the girls are ripping so hard; wish I was that good at such a young age. I look forward to seeing where the girls take it, they are all amazing.”
All three of Brown’s opponents had contested the junior division earlier. It was Alani Morse (Rag) that finished runner-up in the Open Women’s, unable to complete the double alongside her junior division win. Morse posted a 9.76 point heat total to finish ahead of Lola Groube (Pau) who finished in third place and Kyra Wallis (Piha) in fourth.
Tai Murphy (Ohope) immediately put the pressure on his opponents in the Under 20 Boys Final with a 7.33 point opening ride, and never let up from that point. The in-form goofy foot surfer had posted a perfect ten-point ride in the semi-finals for two insane turns that had the hardy crowd cheering. In the final, Murphy finished with a 13.94 point heat total to defeat Cooper Ashill (Whngrei) who came home late with a
two wave total of 12.0 points. Mount Maunganui’s Joe Goodjohn finished the final in third place ahead of Spencer Rowson (Tara) in fourth.
Murphy’s ten-point ride saw him take the Volkswagen Wave of the Day home for the third and final day of the event.
Local girl Alani Morse claimed the Under 20 Girls Division with an emphatic win and 14.66 point heat
total. Morse held the lead for much of the final with a pair of six-point rides before stroking into her final wave on the hooter that netted the 13-year-old an excellent 8.33 points.
Pauanui surfer Lola Groube finished the final in second place with her last ride coming in at 6.57 for a 9.04 heat total. Kyra Wallis (Piha) finished in third

Jacqui from the Local Rag talks to Dirk De Ruysscher the sole owner and operator of Raglan's local bike shop, Cyclery Raglan. The business offers bike repairs, bike rentals as well as bike and part sales.
When did you start the Cyclery and what motivated you to provide this for the community?
I started the business 16 years ago, operating from a garage on Stewart Street. About 6 years later I moved to an empty converted shed at 10 Bankart Street opposite where Four Square is now located.
It was basically a jump into the deep end. I worked as a bicycle mechanic in Hamilton and got really tired of the daily commute. So decided to give it a go setting up my own shop and provide bike repairs for the community.
How has your business changed over the years?
Quite a bit. When I started, I had just $1000 in my pocket. The local Westpac declined me for a business loan, so I just went with what I had. I secured a few accounts with suppliers so I could purchase the most common accessories and parts and only had to pay for them a month later.
I remember my first customer walking up the driveway to get his bike fixed. Still grateful to Johnny from Raglan Lawns for trusting me.
Paying my bills on time gave me more and more credibility with my suppliers and slowly I was able to stock some good quality bike brands.
Very proud on being named "A real cyclist's bike shop" in the Classic NZ Cycle Trails guide. What challenges have you faced and what have you done to diversify?
Where do I start, haha. Running a small business in a small town is already a challenge on its own.
Specifically winter time can be daunting. So I figured that I needed something apart from bike repairs.
I was given the opportunity to take over the printer machine from the video store and one of the local locksmiths traded me his key cutting machine for some bike repairs. So for the last 5 years I have been offering printing, laminating and key cutting services. This has been a very good move.
It helps pay for the rent during the more quiet tourist months. It is surprising in this digital age that paper still has a place. But I am very grateful for that.
I have been victim of a few burglaries over the years, so that always sets you back a bit but you have got to bounce back from that.
Alongside running your business you have also been instrumental in creating community events like the iconic Karioi Classic. You provide ongoing volunteering in the community. Can you tell us about what this involves currently and why it’s important to you?
My endless passion for cycling and meeting up with Lisa Thomson brought me to organising the Karioi Classic for 13 years. The event definitely put Raglan on the cycling map.
I have also been involved with the Raglan Fire Brigade for almost 15 years now. It always has been a young boy's dream to be a firefighter, but I basically joined the brigade to serve this community and say thanks for the support that has been given to my business.
I currently have the rank of senior station officer and am involved with the management part of the brigade.
You also were involved in the development of the bike tracks. How are these going, and are there plans for further developments?
The mountain bike tracks are still going well. I believe they are a nice asset for Raglan.
The trails won't be further developed in the pine area as there is no room and more trails also means more maintenance.
We have been in talks with WDC and the Community Board about linking the trails through the Wainui Reserve with the Wainui Bush Reserve as it will give the safe cycling options in Raglan a real boost.

Tell me about life?
I am 13 years old and was brought up in Auckland and I skated and did heaps of athletics and did lots of sports and became super competitive. First of all I was a skater and did heaps of skate competitions and then I went out surfing with my dad. It was so much fun. I also had a good connection with the ocean better than any sport I had done, there were so many things to learn, you can only get better, it's a full way of living!
Tell me more about the connection with the water?
I was talking to my coach Daniel Kereopa (DK) and he has been teaching me about being mentally one with the ocean knowing exactly whats happening.
He always takes me to the ocean at low tide and shows me the things that are going to happen when the tide comes in, where the rips are going to be, where the best bank will be and its so interesting. People think the ocean is going to do something random but you can know what's going to happen.
What made your whanau come to Whaingaroa?
My dad got offered to start up a plumbing company. We were thinking about coming anyway and it all rolled out perfectly and we knew Raglan would be our spot for our whanau. We learnt our family connection Our great great grandfather was the first MP of Raglan, His ashes are in the harbour. Raglan was definitely our home. The community was super welcoming. Everyone thought they wouldn't be welcoming to the Aucklanders but everyone was so nice, everyone was like a family.
Recently you left Whaingaroa and did something amazing. Tell me about it?
Recently I went to El Salvador for the World Junior Surfing Championships. It was a long journey, we had to get picked to represent NZ which was a success in itself. Representing your country was so amazing. The culture was so cool, it was a big community. It was incredible to see how different countries prepare for the competition. We were in the same hotel as the Japanese team and they were so organized and their rooms were so tidy and clean. We all love one thing which is surfing.
How did you go at the Junior World Surfing Champs?
I placed overall 17th in the World for under 16s. Everyone from other teams would give you tips and help you set goals etc. I remembered what DK had taught me to feel the waves and ocean. It was epic to learn new waves.
What advice would you give to a young person who wanted to get good at a sport?
Just get a buddy or a sibling to share the experience. One of the reasons I surf is to get barrelled with my brother. Its not about the competition its about having fun and the community around you. Community is so important in a sport and makes it fun! One of the reasons I surf is not to win but to have a full connection with the community.
What advice would you give to adults in the community on how to support youth?
I would say believe in them, tell them they can do it.
You have spoken about a community who have supported you. Who are they? DK he has helped me with both my mental and physical aspects.

Raglan Food Journeys is a celebration of the diverse and vibrant voices that make our local food scene so unique. Delving into the kitchens of passionate home cooks, chatting with local food artisans, and exploring the creations of our local foodies.
TaniaAshman’s vibrant and engaging presence draws you in and makes you want to get involved in all of her projects. She first came to Raglan as part of the Karioi project helping to set traps on the maunga, and we are now incredibly lucky to have her as our Food Security Coordinator at the The Whaingaroa Environment Centre (WEC).
When asked to describe what her role involves, she explains, “I work on projects to encourage growing food, caring for the environment, and ensuring people have access to good quality and locally grown food that is sustainable. This is with the aim of food being grown everywhere so that people can have food, whether they are participating in crop swap, sharing over the fence or wanting an income. Basically encouraging growing food in sustainable and local systems”.
Her vision and dedication has led to collaboration on a multitude of projects, such as the Raglan Growers Market. Tania’s work, alongside Charlie Young and WEC, has brought the market to life, with Raglan District Union Church generously allowing the use of their space. Every Friday, from September to May, the market bustles with activity. Tania says, “It’s amazing because of the people. We have stall holders who look after each other, help each other to pack in and pack out. It’s a really friendly community and collaborative atmosphere”.

In Season - Watercress S
You may be lucky enough to know a spot to forage for watercress, this aquatic, nutrient-dense vegetable. If not, you can often find it at most vegetable shops where it has been grown hydroponically. Toss it into stir fries, put it on your sandwiches, or throw it into your pasta dishes; it truly is a versatile green leafy vegetable.
QUICK IDEAS
Make a simple watercress soup by sauteing 2 chopped brown onions and 4 small garlic cloves in 1 tbsp of olive oil in a soup pot until translucent. Add 500 ml of vegetable or chicken stock and 3 large chopped potatoes. Simmer until the potatoes are soft. Then, add 2 large bunches of watercress to the pot and simmer for 4 minutes. Whizz up the soup with a hand blender, adding salt and cracked black pepper to taste. Serve as is or with fresh cream or crème fraîche.
Make a fresh salad with a large bunch of watercress, 1 cup of mung bean sprouts, 3 tbsp of your choice of fresh herbs (coriander, parsley, or mint), and 1 tbsp of your choice of nuts (peanut, almond, pistachio, or macadamia). Then, make a dressing with 1 tsp Dijon mustard, 1 tsp honey, freshly squeezed lemon juice or lime juice, salt, pepper, and red chilli flakes. Slowly whisk in olive oil until you reach the desired consistency. Use this dressing on the salad and serve alone or with grilled meat on the side. This salad is especially good with fish!
Make hangi master Rewi Spraggon’s watercress toroi. You’ll need 2 litres boiling water, ¼ cup salt, 2 pots classic marinated mussels, 2 bags watercress, 2 whole chillies chopped, 4 cloves garlic chopped, 2 x 1-litre preserving jars. Boil water in a large pot. Add salt and mussels, including the marinade. Boil for 1 minute and set aside. In a separate pot, boil watercress for 5 minutes and drain. Chop mussels into quarters and roughly chop watercress. Mix watercress and mussels in a clean preserving jar, adding chillies and garlic. Top up with water from the mussel pot and press down with a knife to remove any bubbles. Screw lid on tight. Once opened, keep refrigerated for up to five days.

range of crops, talk about them, and share ideas. It’s often a mix of gardeners and non gardeners, and everyone is welcome to come along on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month from 3pm to 4.30pm”.
In addition to managing seed saving projects at WEC, she champions accessibility by organising a free seed stand stocked with seasonal varieties. This initiative hopes to reduce barriers to starting a garden. She also supports Waitetuna School with their Maara Kai and Garden to Table programme with Kate Dermer.
But, perhaps one of the most innovative projects is shared food growing in rural and urban settings. This initiative connects people who want to grow food with those who have land and are happy to have people on their land. Tania explains, “We have had 10 houses coming together, transforming part of a donated paddock into growing mass kumara and pumpkin crops. We then distributed the harvest amongst the people involved. It is a great opportunity to work together, learn together, and receive the benefits of the harvest”.
Tania shed light on the initiation process for these projects, “When I’m looking at a new project I ask, does it fulfil the guidelines of the six pillars of food sovereignty? Does the project focus on food for people? Build knowledge and skills? Work with nature? Value food providers? Localise food systems and put control locally?” The concept of food sovereignty came out of a movement in 1970s Italy. Tania is currently working with Liz Stanway on implementing a local model following the principles of Te Waka Kai Ora, National Māori Organics Authority of Aotearoa. They are the kaitiaki of the Hua Parakore, a kaupapa Māori system for Kai AtuaPure Foods. Tania makes a caveat here and says, “In New Zealand, we are not going to achieve food sovereignty until Māori have sovereignty in what is defined by Māori”.
When asked what makes our food scene so special, Tania says, “With the work I’m doing at WEC around food resilience, I’m seeing people really enjoying local, nutritious food that cares for them and the environment. The community is also willing to explore different ways of exchanging, selling, and growing food. Raglan is full of inventive and creative people. Get to know some gardeners and make friends with them because they often want to give away their excess, and you can learn a lot from chatting to them. Participate in what I call the ‘economy of abundance’ in Raglan. There are many opportunities available to locate fresh produce. Visit the community Free Pantry food stand on Wainui Rd. Visit Crop Swap; you can bring anything to the swap from, what’s growing in your garden, preserves, or even something you have baked or cooked that day. Volunteer at the community garden on Wineera St, or find Rose Wallis and get involved with community harvest picks from which you will not walk away empty handed.
TANIA’S CHOKO TRAY BAKE
Chokos are the most amazing vegetable. They are easy to grow, are often overlooked, and make a great alternative to courgette and cucumbers. They are awesome roasted with a medley of vegetables.
Cut up a baking tray full of your choice of vegetables e.g. choko, kumara, potato, carrot, onion, jerusalem artichoke, parsnip etc. Liberally mix the vegetables with olive oil and garlic cloves. Roast at 180° for up to 45 mins or to desired roastiness. The choko will be a juicy fresh explosion contrasting beautifully with the starchy warmth of the other vegetables.

AN INTRODUCTION TO EMILY EDWARDS, LOCAL RISING STAR PHOTOGRAPHER

Herewe are in ISO bar on a Wednesday evening with four massive bags of technology between us. Cameras, lenses, steady cams, laptops, phones, and Emily’s new toy… A SONY camcorder. Emily is a local mum to two, and local auntie to many more! In this interview you can read about the experience of self-doubt, and Emily’s inspirations.
Q: What do you love most about your work?
Emily: Meeting people, it is 100% meeting people, finding out their story, and finding out who they are. Photography has connected me with so many beautiful people. Raglan is full of people carving out a life which is unique and special to them and I love to capture their story.
Q: How did you get into photography?
Emily: Well I always loved it - I'm an emotional and nostalgic person, I used to love watching my Granny and Grandad’s silent films of my mum as a child, and flicking through their old photo albums.
I used to organise a photography competition and I always dreamt of being the photographer, but I was intimidated by all their expensive camera gear. But one day I bought a camera and thought I’m going to do it. But I didn’t, it sat in the cupboard unused. I didn’t have the
confidence, so I sold it. I must have done that three or four times. Bought and sold cameras, thinking it was a silly idea, I would never be a photographer.
When I had my first baby, I started taking photos of him. I didn't want to forget or miss anything. So I bought another camera. But I still didn't have the confidence to put myself out there. I was living in Wellington at the time and I was new to the city and a good friend said to me, "No one knows you here. Start saying you're a photographer, believe it."
So I did, and you know what, I did start to believe it. When I moved to Raglan, I believed I was a photographer. I offered to take photos of pregnant friends. Raglan is a special place. I found it easy to connect with people and before I knew it I was taking photos of people; friends of friends of friends would recommend me. But it was the confidence, as soon as I believed I could do it I could.
Q: What is your niche?
Emily: It's capturing the memories as they are, I need to connect with people individually, learn about their story and who they are so I can capture their unique selves. I love documenting family life and love stories. I love documenting people like the local musician Soulti hearing about how she became a musician and what her latest EP is all about. Families like Ziksi and Ryan, capturing them spending time in their tiny home, enormous veggie garden, and going for
their evening walk through the paddocks with their toddler. Mums like Emma; she was a new mum at home living off her land, baking and selling at the markets - that's what we captured, that's the story.
There are also so many incredible and talented people in Raglan that I also love to capture their talents and crafts. I hate the idea of someone who is incredible having to miss out on having their stories captured because they ‘didn't get married’ or ‘didn't have children’. I'm looking for the memories, nostalgia of everyone’s story.
Q: Who inspires you?
Emily: I love the Humans of New York style photography, capturing people in their story and finding out about who they are. I would love to do a Raglan series. So I'd say the people whose stories I am capturing; they inspire me. If we’re connected I am emotionally invested and it helps me create my best work.
And of course my kids inspire me. I want to capture their journeys but also I want to make them proud and I hope in turn inspire them one day.

My children were born at home in Raglan, with the help of our wonderful Raglan midwives. Natural births and organic living has been really important to me & just seemed right. Kia ora. I’m Nicky, one of the naturopaths. I’m from the UK and moved to NZ with my husband and 2 boys 12 years ago. We settled in Raglan in 2014 and the Raglan Dispensary was the first place I visited to buy my groceries and ask for work. Within a few weeks I had a casual post and worked throughout my naturopath training in the downstairs part of the shop. I’ve now worked my way up the stairs and after 5 years experience as a qualified naturopath, am now part of the permanent team.
I‘ve been a member of Whaingaroa Waka Ama Whanau Club for about 8 years and paddle mostly socially but have competed in the odd race. I also enjoy walking, whether it be on the beach or up a mountain. My interest in herbal medicine and nutrition means I love spending time in my garden growing my own produce, herbs, and some teas.
I enjoy being at the Herbal Dispensary, helping the locals, travellers and tourists with their acute and chronic health needs. I particularly love making herbal formulas specifically tailored to individuals. And it’s always a bonus to be working with a caring, friendly, supportive and fun team.

One of the questions I get asked most is, ‘Where is your accent from?’ and every time my answer remains the same: ‘Unfortunately, it’s not Canadian’.
The story goes like this: I was raised in Washington DC by a Kiwi mum and always aspired to live in Aotearoa to learn about my roots, and in 2020 I got the opportunity to do so.
Ever since I can remember, I have been interested in the natural world and when I moved here, I was shocked by the connection the people had with the land. This is something specific to Aotearoa, something cultural, an idea I didn’t grow up with but one I was delighted to adopt.
The idea is, that we are one, human and Earth. A oneness. We have a shared existence and mutual dependence. Our well-being is tied to the health of the Earth and vice versa. This idea encouraged a deeper appreciation for the web of life and
created within me a responsibility to our planet and to those living on it.
Fast forward to 2024, I am studying full-time SPCNM and working at the Herbal Dispensary to gain as much wisdom as possible. The goal is to become a certified Naturopath in three years allowing me to continue to deepen my connection with the plants and with all of you!

Kia ora, I’m Olivia! I love working in an environment surrounded by natural medicine, and healthy delicious food. I’m always so fascinated by the healing properties of plants, but for me my favourite part about working at the Herbal Dispensary is the community.
I enjoy working with and talking to people, to see so many familiar faces coming in and supporting the small business. I’m also so grateful to work alongside the most wonderful ladies; we’re like sisters and have shared lots of laughs, tears, chocolate, tea, and boogies behind the counter together over the years.
I’ve been working at the Herbal Dispensary for the past 7 years on and off between travelling around Europe, Hawaii, Japan and Bali and studying a bachelor’s degree in Poutū-Manahau (Population Health) at Waikato University, which dove into holistic approaches for supporting community health and well-being.
Currently I’m balancing working at the Herbal, disability support work and doing research for the Whaingaroa Youthwork Collective. Growing up in Whaingaroa, it feels fulfilling to be putting love and energy back into the community as I’m so grateful for the support I’ve received. When I’m not working, you’ll likely find me in or around the ocean.

Te Wiki Tūao ā-Motu –National Volunteer Week honours the collective energies and mana of volunteers in Aotearoa. They grow our people, open minds, open hearts and create joy.
Raglan Naturally is hosting a Celebrating Volunteers Event as part of Te Wiki Tūao ā-Motu – National Volunteer Week. They are teaming up with Timebank and Repair Cafe to organise this event for community volunteers that contribute their time to various local organisations.
This event will acknowledge the hundreds of volunteers who contribute significantly to the Whaingaroa communities and will serve as an opportunity to celebrate their efforts.

The law surrounding property owned by couples and its division when they separate is governed by the Property (Relationships) Act 1976.
The Act provides options for how parties can divide their property by agreement before, during and after their relationship ends. At Gina Jansen Lawyers, we provide advice regarding relationship property division so we put together some helpful FAQ’s.
What relationships does the Property (Relationships) Act apply to?
The PRA applies to married/civil union couples, and de facto couples in a relationship for at least 3 years. The Act also applies to couples in a de facto relationship for less than 3 years, who have children, and not making an order would cause serious injustice and to couples in a de facto relationship for less than 3 years where one partner makes substantial contributions to the relationship and not making an order would cause serious injustice. In these instances, shares are divided in accordance with contributions to the relationship.
What is Relationship & Separate Property?
Under the Act, property can be classified as either relationship property or separate property. Property classified as relationship property is divided equally i.e. 50/50. For example, the family home and family chattels are always relationship property no matter whose name they are in or how they were acquired. Other assets may also be classified as relationship property depending on the circumstances in which

otherwise mixed up with other relationship property and can include: income earned during the relationship, property bought by either partner during the relationship, the value of life insurance, KiwiSaver and superannuation paid for during the relationship, property bought with the proceeds of separate property for common use/benefit, and gifts or inheritances that
property. For example, inheritances paid into joint bank accounts. If it’s not classified as relationship property, then the property is separate property. Ownership of separate property stays with the partner who owns it. Separate property includes: property bought with the proceeds of sale of property owned by either partner before
common use or benefit, family heirlooms or taonga, gifts and inherited property which a partner receives during the relationship.
What Does ‘Contributions to the Relationship’ Mean?
The Court may decide that relationship property is to be divided according to the contributions of the partners instead of on a 50/50 equal sharing basis. If property is divided according to the contributions of the partners to the relationship, both financial and non-financial contributions can be taken into account, such as: caring for children or elderly relatives, managing the household so that one partner can build a business, and working outside the home so that a partner can gain qualifications.
We Have Separated. What Now?
Fortunately, the vast majority of couples are able to reach agreement on how their property will be divided. Written agreements should be undertaken by a relationship property lawyer to ensure it is binding and enforceable, as the law requires that each partner must receive independent legal advice with each lawyer certifying the agreement on behalf of the partner, he/she represents. Where a couple can’t agree about how property should be divided, then it’s important to get advice from a relationship property lawyer. That may not sound like good news but a good relationship property lawyer will ensure that you receive sound, realistic advice, and will help you to correctly identify and classify what is relationship property and each party’s contributions to it, along with helping to find and reach solutions by agreement and without the intervention of the Courts.

OdESSA is coming up from Wellington to play at The Yard Cafe on June 21st. Jacqui talks to band member Paul Mouncey to find out more.
Can you please introduce your band and describe your sound?
OdESSA are largely made up of four members: Paul Mouncey on bass, Thomas Friggens on drums, Chris Armour on guitar and Matthew Pender on vocals.
The sound is funky rock, soul, with a bit of country and blues.
When did you form and where have you mainly played?
OdESSA formed in Wellington in 2002 and released three albums: Oak Park Avenue (2005), The Prize (2007) and Bring Me The Head of Pepe Lopez (a 2010 posthumous compilation of b-sides and rarities after the band first split up in 2009).
Oak Park Avenue made a big splash when released, jack-knifing into the national top ten album chart with its big single Bring The Money Back.
OdESSA became one of the country’s most acclaimed live acts, playing big events such as the Big Day Out festival, the red carpet premiere of Peter Jackson’s
King Kong, as well as winning awards such as Best Indie Video for their song Promises, Promises at the 2006 Juice TV ceremony.
In 2009 the band members parted ways after a sold-out national tour to travel and focus on other projects.
Pender and Mouncey revived the group in 2021. A recording of a brand new album is underway for release later in the year.
What can locals expect if they come along?
High energy performances, dancing and fun. Front man Matthew Pender is a high-energy entertainer and the musicians are exceptional.
The other bands are funky instrumental group Snakebone from Wellington and Hamilton’s brilliant, bound-for-glory Pineja.
