Cracking fun with cartoon hero

OR HARDCORE fans of Asterix The Gaul the latest instalment of the film series Asterix: The Secret of The Magic Potion, ends a three-year wait. It has seemed like a lifetime since we last clapped eyes on our favourite fighting cartoon character. This cracking chaotic jaunt, directed by Alexandre Astier and Louis Clichy, with all the favourite ‘-ix’ based characters, makes up for any delay. The film quickly transports older viewers back to childhood memories, but has more than enough contemporary humour to enthral and attract a new audience

to the beloved comic book series from René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo. Things kick off with the wellworn, simpler comic-drawn recap of why the famous village has been able to fight off the entire Roman Empire and be a particularly nasty pain in the backside of the Empire’s head honcho, Julius Caesar. The series can boast its own theme park and countless book and film releases. Sitting in the screening room it seemed obvious anyone over 30 remembered the TV cartoons and books, while those under 30 were possibly new to the characters. Would this be a stumbling block? No, not at all it seemed. Laughs from all corners came throughout as the sharp writing catered for all ages. The only downside was the plot lines that were allowed to drift, remain incomplete and confusing. The story starts with village druid Getafix suffering a fall. Following this, his concerns about his future lead to him setting off to find a young druid to impart the recipe for the magic potion. The potion in

question has allowed the village to defeat the Romans for so long. Asterix the druid and his oversized and super-strength sidekick Obelix head off to help solve the problem. Visually the new film is a delight – long gone are the hand-drawn images, although this style is used superbly during a montage section. As the three begin their trek we are introduced to fallen druid Demonix, who, hearing of Getafix’s

plans, sets about scuppering them, trying to sell the potion’s recipe to the Romans in the process. The clever use of modern names such as Selfix and Gin and Tonix works well, and the ending, which is nicely tied to a small plotline, is a visual feast – even tipping its hat to Avengers Assemble.
