Dear Fellow Members, The GC has been busy moving on with the process of looking into the disbursement of compensation to members. I am pleased to inform members that we have appointed Baker Tilly TFW LLP as the consultants to look into the methodology of the distribution of the funds. They have started work on it and should be done with it in a few weeks’ time. Once the work is finished, we will be calling for an Extraordinary General Meeting to share and explain to members the methodology used in the distribution of funds. We have also recently appointed GoIndustry DoveBid (S) Pte Ltd as the company that will assist us in doing the auctioneering and disposing of all of our assets that could be sold. They will be assisting us in tagging all the items that could be sold, creating marketing brochures and putting out tenders for interested parties to participate in the tenders. GoIndustry DoveBid has a global presence and has the experience and industry reputation in managing such a business. The members’ lounge has been completed and members can now use the lounge for drinks and light finger food in a nice cool environment. We are doing some light final touches to the lounge so I ask members to please bear with us. I also want to assure members that the Club has been very prudent in setting up the members’ lounge. We have made use of surplus furniture and fittings where possible as we are aware that the Club will be winding down. I look forward to hearing from members if they have any suggestions on improving the members’ lounge. On the golfing operations, members would have noticed that there are significant damages to some areas on the Palm course caused by wild boars. We have engaged in discussions with AVA on how best to manage the wild boars intruding into our golf course. AVA has given us some recommendations and our course superintendent Christine Chungbhivat and her team is working on implementing these. Christine will be writing an article about it in this issue of the magazine (Pg 38). Recently there have been two cases of employee harassment by members or their guests. This harassment has been made to our female employees. I would like to remind members and for them to remind their guests that harassment of our female employees can result in them being charged for a criminal offence. Therefore I sincerely request members to please kindly extend their respect to our employees and be courteous to them. By the time you read this message from me, we have approximately five months to go before the Club closes after July 31st. I encourage all members to play as much golf as they can at RCC and also take part in the many events organised by our Golfing and Greens Sub-Committee. Let’s all do our part in making RCC a vibrant and fun place to be in the coming months. I mentioned in my last article that the Club will be staging the biggest party event for our final countdown and for members and staff to get together for our last party together. Watch out for the Club announcement for the date of the event. There will also be two days of fun golf on July 30th and 31st for members to have their final game at RCC. We will keep members updated on the progress of our compensation claim. We will also keep members informed of Club events through e-blast and posters as well as the monitors that we have around the Club premises. Ciao for now, Paul Singh President

Dear Fellow Members, As I pen this message, we are left with only five months before we hand over our beautiful Palm and Lake course and club premises to SLA under the acquisition notice served on us on 4 Jan 2017. Having been a member for more than 20 years, I have many fond memories just like many of my fellow members who have together made RCC a special place we all call our second home. Naturally I felt a deep sense of loss, a loss that cannot be replaced even if I were to buy another club membership. This feeling of loss is made even more painful knowing that the scenic piece of land with lakes and rolling hills as the backdrop will soon be turned into a rail track for the High Speed Rail and a depot for the Cross Island MRT line. In our meetings with Singapore Land Authority (SLA) and Land Transport Authority, I had made appeals for the landscape to be preserved as far as we possibly could by building the infrastructure underground. RCC is indeed very special to many of us active members whose median age is about 60. It’s a place we all come to play the game we all love. It’s a place we have fellowship. It a place we dine and wine and have fun. It really means a great deal to us, whether you are retired, semi-retired or even the economically active younger members. We are indeed very proud to have sponsored many junior golfers all these years and we certainly hope they will keep the Singapore flag flying high at future international golf competitions. Over the past many months, the General Committee (GC) has been busy interviewing consultants to help us with the task of valuation, legal and adjudication. The last consultant to help us with the assets realisation has just been appointed. They will advise and carry out disposal of Club assets through auction, tender or outright sales to turn them into cash. Smaller items will be made available to members to purchase if they are interested and a task force has been set up for this purpose. Our Club remains a legal entity even after we vacate the premises. RCC will continue as a club without golf and other facilities as registered with the Registrar of Societies until such time members vote in an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) to decide its future. Meanwhile our adjudication consultant has begun work to determine the compensation each member is entitled after SLA finalises the amount. Members can also expect his/her share of the club reserves after the consultant finishes its work. The GC has also made plans for a big party in July 2018 to mark the end of the one and only Raffles Country Club. We ought to make it memorable and grand so that RCC will be well remembered as it goes down memory lane. So I urge members to turn up in full force to participate in the final event of the Club. In conclusion, may I take this opportunity to wish each and every member good health and wealth, and continue to play this beautiful game of golf. Cheers, John Goh Club Secretary

CLUB NEWS

Coffee Table Book Submissions

RCC Memories RCC will always have a special place in my memory! I am a 'pioneer' member, having joined when the club first opened. Back in 1992, my then colleagues and I started a tradition of having a round of golf on the last working day of the year. We started with one flight of my immediate managers and over the years expanded it to include other senior staff and an average of three flights. Fast forward to today, 25 years later, and all of us have gone on to work with other companies, with a few of us already retired. Yet, we are still religiously keeping the tradition of having our golf outing on the last working day of the year. We always look forward to the fellowship and friendship strengthened by this get-together - golf was just an excuse. With the announcement that RCC was going to be acquired and be obliterated from this earth come end July 2018, there was dismay and regret that our longheld tradition would be meeting its demise. So to make up for the imminent loss, a few suggested that we make it a half-yearly game. We did just that, and had our most recent game in June 2017. We look forward to our next game on 29 December 2017. We plan to have a Big Bang at our final game on 29 June 2018. Come 1 August 2018 RCC will be no more, but I am sure the fond memories we have together will be etched forever. We all felt a tinge of regret that our tradition is coming to an end. While we have plans to continue at another golf course, it will never be the same. Adieu RCC. By Chua Cher Choon (11530)

Snapsh ts Happy 90th Birthday! We are certain you would have met Uncle at the Halfway House at Palm, serving you your yummy snacks as you play your rounds. Well, Uncle recently turned 90 on New Year’s Day! The HR rounded up some staff and together we gave Uncle a surprise birthday party on 4 January 2018. Indeed Uncle was surprised and extremely touched by the staff’s thoughtful gesture. At 90, Uncle does not even need reading glasses as he records the daily sales in his little book. We wish Uncle good health and happiness always!

Santa Golf 2017 23 December 2017

H

o! Ho! Ho! Once again it was the time of the year when RCC celebrates Christmas with its annual Christmas golf event. Aptly named Santa Golf 2017, the mascot was none other than Santa Claus himself. All participants arrived at the Club in high spirits on 23 December 2017, and most were game enough to come dressed to the theme, enveloping the Club in a sea of red and green – the colours of Christmas! The day was blessed with fine sunny weather and the participants enjoyed the golf segment of the event at the pristine Lake course. The golfers took a short respite with the popsicles sponsored by F&N Creameries. It was evident from the photos captured that everyone had fun during the golf event!

17

When dusk fell, it was time for to begin. Everyone emerged shower and the ladies were themselves from elegant golf evening wear.

the dinner segment anew after a quick quick to transform attire to glamorous

The whole evening was filled with much laughter and merry-making. Members were entertained by an energetic emcee who kept everyone engrossed in plenty of fun games. An LED backdrop updated everyone with the day’s golf event photos and a video helped to create the mood for a fun party atmosphere. Tummies rumbling at the start of the evening were satiated by a delectable semibuffet Christmas spread. Towards the later part of the evening when stomachs were filled, members danced the night away to the retro beat of the music. Indeed it was a Christmas event that everyone will remember for a long time to come.

Champion Medallist 2017 6 January 2018

T

he recent Champion Medallist took place on 6 January 2018 and we saw Amit Gulati and Jessie Oh emerging as the champions of champions for the Men’s Division and Ladies’ Division respectively.

With such commendable skills and tenacity, we conducted a Q&A interview with them to find out what makes them tick.

Interview with Amit Gulati

Starting in this tournament, what were your expectations playing against some of the best players in RCC? There was some positive pressure to perform and play my best round on the Palm course, which I managed to do despite some slip-ups during the round. I really enjoyed the company that I was paired with and I also managed to make some good putts that helped me to put together a good round. What were your preparations leading up to this triumphant feat? I made it a point to hit the driving range the evening before D-day and the morning before the round to warm up and get my shots in order, since I had not played for some time due to the New Year break. I guess that helped me to accomplish my goal of shooting a good round in the tournament. If there is one moment that best describes your feat during the 18-hole round in the tournament, what would that be? That would be my 40 to 45-foot putt for birdie on the 6th hole, which helped to lift up my round.

One word to sum up your victory? Awesome! If you were able to play a round of golf with anyone, who would your flight partners be? Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth.

Smiles all around at the Champion Medallist 2017

22

What is your favourite club in your bag? My 3 hybrid. How often do you golf in a month? I golf around four times a month.

Interview with Jessie Oh Starting in this tournament, what were your expectations playing against some of the best players in RCC? It was a pleasure. What were your preparations leading up to this triumphant feat? As usual, I just try to enjoy the competition. If there is one moment that best describes your feat during the 18-hole round in the tournament, what would that be? It was at Hole no. 9 where I overshot my approach shot to the green by about 30 feet and managed to convert it to Par. What is your favourite club in your bag? My Honma BERES driver. How often do you golf in a month? I golf around 8 to 10 games a month. In one word to sum up your victory? Elated!

Ladies' Flag Competition 24 Jan 2018

T

he RCC ladies golfing community started 2018 with a fun-filled and happy event. The Ladies Flag Competition that took place at Lake course on Wednesday 24 January 2018 saw a good turnout of 27 golfers. The play format was such that the ladies had to plant their flags when they had used up all their strokes which were allocated based on their handicaps. Theresa Ng who planted her flag 12 feet from the pin at Hole 2 (extra hole) emerged as the winner. Jessie Oh came in first runner-up. A sudden heavy downpour in the late afternoon saw two remaining flights not completing their rounds. Ibolya Stark and Boo Geok Ching who were contenders, sadly had to give up. The ladies adjourned to Albatross for a makan kechil and mingled among themselves, forging new friendships, bringing old friendships to new heights and creating more RCC memories to talk about in years to come. We will remember this final flag game at RCC with fond memories…of deep red roses and white-feathered angel wings.

Flying the Singapore Flag

R

CC Member Eric Tan did Singapore proud with an individual title win in the World Amateur Golfers Championship (WAGC) in November last year. Taking out the title in Divison B (5.5-10.4 handicap index) on four of Kuala Lumpur’s championship courses, Eric, who plays off 7.9, bounced back from an ordinary second day on the fairways to post a 67 on the final day of the four day tournament at The Mines Resort & Country Club. His 288 nett total, nine strokes ahead of Vietnamese runner-up Duc Lan Vu ensured a well–deserved victory for the 40-year-old oil and gas company director. 1. Congratulations on your win! How familiar were you with the four courses in KL before the WAGC Final? I had not played those four courses - Kota Permai, Templer Park, Sungai Long and The Mines - before the WAGC final. I played Sungai Long and The Mines during the practise round at WAGC final. 2. What contributed to your win over the four rounds - your game (driving, short game etc), winning mindset, a combination of both? Please elaborate. During the tournament, my driving was average and my iron shots were below average but my short game was very good. Over the course of the four days, I had 57% drives on the fairway, 30.5% greens in regulation and 28.75 putts per round. Concentration was a key factor and I managed to focus shot by shot during the event. I had a couple of bad shots especially on day two when I shot nine over on the first nine holes but managed to pull myself back into the game with one over for the second nine. I was the overnight leader on day one (I led by two strokes), trailed by four strokes after day two, led by two strokes after day three and won by nine strokes after day four.

3. Your birthday was the day after the WAGC tournament - how did you celebrate? My celebration was a good night’s sleep as I was so tired after this six-day event. Of course a good dinner with my family ☺ 4. How many times have you participated in the WAGC? This is the second time thanks to Tan Lee Hong who invited me to join this event. 5. What other tournaments have you won over the years? 2011 RCC Stroke Play Club Champion 2013 RCC Match Play Club Champion 2015 RCC Match Play Club Champion 2015 RCC Stroke Play 1st Runner up 2017 RCC Match Play Runner up 2017 RCC Stroke Play Nett Champion and other charity events and monthly medals. 6. With RCC unfortunately closing mid-2018, name some key highlights for you at RCC over the years. It is sad as I have so many good memories with my gang from RCC playing the golf courses especially the "wild boar" event at Tanjong course and "sake" event at Fullerton Hotel. Year-End Bash 30 December 2017

T

his year’s year-end party was aptly called the Year-End Bash 2017 - or YEB 2017 for short. It was intended to be ‘a party by RCC Members for RCC Members’, and was marked as the ‘final’ of all Year-End Events as we will never have the opportunity to witness this again with the Club’s closure this July.

Despite limited resources, the LSSC planned and worked very hard to come up with a programme that would have 200 people enraptured and enthralled throughout the evening. The success of the YEB 2017 was also due to a group of passionate RCC members who put in much time and effort into rehearsals, in the weeks leading up to the event itself. The YEB 2017 evening’s programme started with a display of ‘chipping skills’ by the members. Alas, not many of our great golfers from the floor could chip their golf balls into the net placed some 10 metres away. The special marching-in of the first dish by Fu LI Men staff set the mood for the commencement of dinner. A ‘table game’ for the audience midway through the evening involved answering 10 Questions pertaining to facts about RCC. It was interesting to note that none managed to get full marks for this segment; perhaps the generous flow of beer and liquor sponsored by Fu Lin Men Restaurant could have dulled their grey matter at the beginning of the event.

29

The main attraction of the night was definitely the performances by members of RCC. This segment was called ‘RCC’s Got Talent’. Our talented singers for the night were Nina Koh, Lawrence Kwok, Yong Kah Teck, Francis Loh, Fator Wong and Keziah and Christopher Soh; all showed that not only could they swing well on the golf course, they could also belt out a song with finesse on stage too. Similarly the dancers: Loh Yan Poh, Yong Kah Teck, Soh Eng Ann and their partners, were all just as nimble on their toes as they were with their golf clubs! Live music was provided by The Mysterians, which helped create the atmosphere for the entire evening. Towards the final part of the evening, the audience all joined in to sing the popular Cantonese song, Friends, to symbolise the many friendships forged among RCC members in the Club. It was followed by the ever popular Auld Lang Syne at the end to bid farewell to the year. As usual there was the lucky draw segment that drew great excitement among the participants. However what members treasured most taking home with them that night was the specially commissioned RCC Mug with the signature 18th holes of Lake and Palm courses printed on it. This Mug will serve well for members to remember their many happy days of great golf games played at RCC and also the great friendships made at this remarkable place that most of them called ‘home’. Special thanks goes to Mr Fator Wong for his generous sponsorship of wine and alcohol for the evening, Mr Francis Loh for getting partial sponsorship for Cornell items as lucky draw and the many talented RCC members who put in extra effort for the talent contest. The emcee for the evening was the live-wire Mr Johnny Chor who was impressed by the level of coordination among the performers, staff, members, committee and even the lighting and band contractors. Kudos to everyone for an unforgettable evening!

Cardiovascular (Heart) Disease By Loh Kum Chuen, Pharmacist

C

ardiovascular Disease generally refers to narrowed or blocked blood vessels (atherosclerosis) that may lead to chest pain (angina), stroke or heart attack. Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) is the most common type of heart disease. Other forms of heart disease include abnormal heart beats (arrhythmias), congenital heart defects or heart infections (endocarditis). Cardiovascular Disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women worldwide. By 2030, almost 25 Million people will die from heart disease every year and the largest increase will occur in the S.E. Asian region. Symptoms depend on the type of heart disease and may include chest pain, shortness of breath, pain or in your legs or arms or pain in the neck or throat. Knowing the symptoms of an impending heart attack may help save lives. The chances of survival are greater if emergency treatment begins quickly. The heart is a muscular pump that collects and pumps blood to the lungs to refresh blood with oxygen and removes carbon dioxide as a waste product. The heart then pumps the refreshed blood and nutrients to the various organs and tissues. Oxygen is required by all cells, tissues and organs, including the heart and brain. Risk Factors in heart disease include the following:Ageing increases the risk of damaged, hardened or narrowed arteries Family History is an important risk factor especially if one or both parents have a history of heart disease

32

Smoking is a major risk factor as nicotine constricts your blood vessels and other chemicals such as carbon monoxide can damage the lungs and blood vessels. Unhealthy Diet of high salt, sugar and saturated fats Other risk factors include High Blood Pressure, Diabetes, Obesity, Physical Inactivity, Stress and Poor Hygiene. The main culprit of heart disease is blood viscosity. When your blood gets thicker and stickier, your heart has to work harder. Your organs and tissues get less of the oxygen and nutrients they need. Your blood viscosity is likely to increase with age, setting the stage for life-threatening cardiovascular diseases and other debilitating chronic conditions.

Raffles Connection • Mar - Apr 2018

LIFESTYLE

Complications of Heart Disease may lead to Heart Failure when your heart is unable to pump enough blood to meet your body’s needs, Heart Attack when a blood clot causes damage to the heart muscle, Stroke when the arteries to the brain are narrowed or blocked so that little or no blood reaches the brain and brain tissues begin to die just minutes after a stroke. Aneurysm is a serious complication that can occur anywhere in the body when a bulge is formed in the artery. If an aneurysm bursts, it may lead to life threatening internal bleeding. Peripheral Artery Disease is a condition when the legs do not receive enough blood flow, causing pain when walking (Claudication). Sudden Cardiac Arrest is due to an unexpected loss of heart function, breathing and consciousness often caused by an arrhythmia. If not treated immediately, it is fatal. Don’t let a heart attack be your warning sign: Prevention: Many types of heart disease can be prevented by Lifestyle changes such as to quit smoking, engage in regular exercise, adopt a healthy diet, have better control of Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, High Cholesterol, reduce and manage Stress and adopt good hygiene to prevent infections to the heart. Health Supplements may help to minimise the risks of heart disease by improving blood flow, reducing blood viscosity and providing nutrients to the heart and blood vessels.

Ginkgo biloba helps improve peripheral blood circulation by blood thinning and also helps improve memory. Calcium with Magnesium supplement provides Calcium for the heart muscles to contract and Magnesium for the heart muscles to relax. Chinese Salvia is prized for its blood vitalising properties, reducing blood viscosity and supporting crucial microcirculation. Safflower invigorates the blood, boosting circulation and breaking up stasis, while protecting the heart and brain. Dong Quai, used in TCM for thousands of years, supports blood flow and oxygen supply to the heart. Many other herbs and health supplements have been used successfully to help nourish the heart, brain and blood vessels to prevent heart disease.

Coenzyme Q10 supports cellular energy for the heart to pump efficiently and inhibits oxidation of LDL (bad cholesterol). Omega 3 fish oil supports healthy brain, heart and cardiovascular functions and also supports healthy triglyceride levels.

Wild Boars Control Measures W

ild boars have been doing some serious damage in various play areas in Palm course for the past nine months. Despite primary deterrent measures being put in place to curb wild boar intrusion, it did not yield significant results. The primary deterrent measures include setting up traps and snares, repairing of holes in the fence and installation of concertina barbed wires at the wild boar frequent entry spots. The Club consulted animal control agencies namely AVA and ACRES. A site inspection was conducted on 5 December 2017. The authorities together with the Club staff identified the entry points and habitat areas of the wild boars.

Laying of concertina barbed wire at wild boar entry point.

Site inspection with AVA and ACRES officers.

Various options being considered but found to be not feasible.

The Club has considered various options for control of wild boars such as installation of metal stand traffic barriers, installation of opaque water barriers and construction of hording. After weighing the pros and cons of cost, effectiveness and timeline, the Club found these options not feasible. Golf Course Maintenance department is currently carrying out piling up of hard-core material along the perimeter fence to prevent wild boars from digging in. Thus far there is a significant reduction of wild boar activities on the golf holes near the perimeter fence. The department is also carrying out vegetation clearing at the fringe of wild boar habitat areas behind the driving range and plant nursery.
