WELCOME I would like to wish you all a very warm welcome aboard Qatar Airways. As we start the first month of 2015, we take the opportunity to set our sights on new destinations to be discovered, new goals to pursue, and new frontiers to rise above. This is the focus for Qatar Airways, as we explore new ways to introduce product excellence and innovation in how we deliver our five-star signature service on board, which Qatar Airways is renowned for. Aside from this, in 2015 it will be a year of ‘expansion’ with more frequencies to existing gateways, making it even more seamless when travelling from Barcelona to Bangkok, or from Shanghai to São Paulo, or Tokyo to Tunis. We know how important it is to have a network that takes you where you wish to go in as short a period as possible, with the best available aircraft in the skies, which is why Qatar Airways’ mixed fleet of state-of-the-art next-generation aeroplanes makes the flying experience one to be revered and adored. The Art of Travel is a concept we have carved as an ethos into how we approach our operations – because indeed – travelling is an art and it is our mission to provide a canvas for your journey – whether it be for business or pleasure. It is our aim that our passion for flying and comfort is felt each and every time you experience Qatar Airways. Have a most enjoyable flight, and we look forward to welcoming you again soon.

REACHING MARGINALISED CHILDREN IN CAMBODIA

The Tower Chelsea Creek, London SW6

Launched in November 2012 by Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, the globally focused Educate A Child (EAC) programme strives to bring quality primary education to millions of children. In partnership with EAC, Aide et Action International (AEA) is leading a consortium of 17 national and international organisations to provide education to 57,372 out of school children in all 25 provinces of Cambodia by the end of 2017. The EAC project seeks to reach the most marginalised children, including children with disabilities, to ensure that they receive a quality primary education. Cambodian children are denied an education due to obstacles such as poverty, child work, minority group status, and gender. Children with disabilities are one of the most vulnerable groups in Cambodia, and are the least likely to go to school. Less than 10% of Cambodian children and youths with disabilities have access to any form of education. EAC’s and AEA’s efforts in Cambodia address the range of obstacles children face and include support to children like 13-year-old Ratha Natra. Natra has hydrocephalus and was abandoned by his parents at birth. AEA’s partner, the Rabbit School, a Cambodian organisation that supports disadvantaged children and develops formal education programmes for children with multiple and severe disabilities, began working with Natra in 2008. “He was not able to walk or talk. He could not understand pictures. He could not use the toilet or get dressed,” recalls Hun Touch, a mediator for the Rabbit School. “He was so skinny, even after years of treatment. He was critically sick and had already had brain surgery twice.” oryxinflightmagazine.com

Natra’s caregivers and teachers at the Rabbit School developed an individual educational plan tailored to his specific intellectual and physical needs. Their work with Natra paid off: in 2012, he enrolled in the Rabbit School’s integrated classroom at Toul Kok public primary school. There, learning alongside nondisabled children, Natra learned to read and write words, to speak using three-word sentences and gestures, and to make simple calculations. Today, Natra is healthy and strong. He enjoys reproducing his teachers’ handwriting in his own notebooks. He can also walk by himself. “He likes to help caregivers and teachers. He helps to clean the table, sweep the floor, or help his friends,” explains Hun Touch. “He is an amazing little boy.” Although Natra has only just started his formal academic journey, his caregivers hope he will engage in vocational training and job placement by next year. “Natra is unsure about what he would like to do in the future. But some teachers here are confident he could be a teacher or a driver,” says Touch.

The partnership between EAC and AEA is an example of EAC’s commitment to reach the most marginalised out of school children by partnering with local not-for-profit organisations. EAC identifies suitable partners and co-funds their efforts in priority countries to reach more children and get closer to the goal of education for all. Qatar Airways is honoured to partner with Educate A Child to bring access to education to out of school children. The Doha Film Institute (DFI) has launched a dedicated Qatari Film Fund to support short and feature filmmaking by Qataris. Fatma Al Remaihi, acting DFI Chief Executive Officer and director of the Ajyal Youth Film Festival, announced the new film development, production, and post-production fund at the screening of the Made in Qatar films during the festival.

Beginning this year, the Qatari Film Fund will develop up to four feature films and both develop and produce up to eight short films annually through two application sessions for Qatari directors and writers. This support includes mentoring, financial, equipment, and production assistance.

QATAR BIOBANK RECEIVES ISO CERTIFICATIONS Qatar Biobank has been awarded two International Organization for Standardization (ISO) certifications by British Standards Institute Middle East (BSI). As a member of Qatar Foundation for Education, the centre supports the foundation’s mission to ensure that Qatar addresses national health priorities by enabling research into the causes of the country’s most prevalent diseases.

OOREDOO: QATAR INCREASINGLY CONNECTED Addressing the inaugural session of the ITU Telecom World 2014, Ooredoo Group chairman His Excellency Sheikh Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Saud Al-Thani stressed that Qatar is moving towards an ultimate goal of being the best-connected nation in the world. In speaking to conference attendees, His Excellency said Qatar’s recent development has demonstrated what is possible when mobile technology is incorporated into every aspect of national development. He also observed that Qatar is uniquely placed to be a hub to connect and share the benefits of new breakthroughs between the East and West, the developing world, and developed countries. In speaking about Qatar’s achievements, His Excellency noted that the country boasts the second highest level of household broadband penetration of any developing country after Korea at 94.6%, while the small Gulf nation sits 17th in the world in terms of the number of people per capita using the Internet. In addition, Qatar has 4G LTE coverage nationwide, and high-speed fibre connecting more than 85% of homes. oryxinflightmagazine.com

With Qatar Biobank set for a large-scale public launch later this year, having collected health information and biological samples from more than 1,700 members of the local community, the certifications represent a milestone, enabling the organisation to welcome more participants.

QATARI, ITALIAN VENTURE INVESTS US$205M IN ITALIAN FOOD State-backed Italian and Qatari investors are investing US$205 million to buy more than a quarter stake in Inalca, expanding the Italian meat producer’s overseas markets in the first such deal by the two investment partners. Under the deal agreement, the IQ Made in Italy joint venture will buy a 28.4% stake in Inalca, currently wholly owned by Italian food producer and caterer Cremonini. Italian state-backed private equity fund Fondo Strategico Italiano (FSI) and Qatar Holding, a fund created by the Qatar Investment Authority, set up the joint venture in March 2013 to invest in Italian companies across the food, fashion, luxury, tourism, and leisure sectors.

I URWERK EMC BLACK WATCH Words by Ariel Adams

n a matte black titanium case and with four eccentric dials, the Urwerk EMC takes the form of a curious science-fiction instrument on the wrist. To many watch-lovers the unique ‘Electro Mechanical Control’ watch is in fact something out of fantasy; a machine whose engineering complexities could have only been solved by the clever minds at the Geneva-based boutique watchmaker. Following up the initial model in a naked brushed titanium case, the EMC Black timepiece is more visually striking in its jet-black tone with brightgreen indicator scales. So what does it do aside from telling the time? The timekeeping portion of the engine in the EMC watch is quite straightforward. Manually wound, the mechanical movement offers the time and seconds via two distinct dials. A third dial offers a power reserve. The other portion of the mechanism is dedicated to giving the wearer an immediate reading of just how accurate the watch is – any time and on demand. It starts by turning a crank on the side of the case 20 times in order to generate a small electrical charge. The EMC watch’s functionality becomes much more interesting thanks to the inclusion of a rate testing machine in the movement. Urwerk was able to miniaturise tools used by watchmakers to determine how accurately timepieces are running. Not only will the EMC watch tell you how accurately it is able to indicate the time, but turning a small screw on the rear of the case allows the owner to regulate the watch without having to take it to a watchmaker. The goal, which is thoroughly delivered, is to encourage a closer level of interaction and engagement between watch and wearer. US$126,000 urwerk.com

motoring 29 ALFA ROMEO 6C 2500 COMPETIZIONE After the Second World War, Alfa Romeo was raring to get back into production. Its first competition model, the 6C 2500 Competizione, was built in 1947, and of the two cars specially produced, only one survives today. In its four years of touring race circuits, the 6C racked up a series of podium finishes, but more important is its place in the company’s history. Alfa Romeo’s focus on mass production meant it was the last racing model for many years, making it even rarer. At the illustrious 2005 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, this car took home a class win. Estimated auction value US$4.84 million (Gooding & Company, 2013)

Words by Karl Peskett

‘They don’t make ’em like they used to.’ In today’s throwaway society, that oft-quoted saying applies especially to motor cars, and one look at a 10-year-old vehicle testifies to its accuracy. In the ‘good old days’ there were hardly any plastics, the metal was thick, wood was real, and there was no such thing as ‘pleather’. Old cars last longer. But throw in a bit of heritage, rarity, race history, or owner provenance, and suddenly values begin to skyrocket. Some even qualify as investment opportunities. This month we take a look at some of the most expensive cars to have ever sold at auction.

DUESENBERG MODEL J LONG-WHEELBASE COUPE

MERCEDES-BENZ 540K SPEZIAL ROADSTER

With race wins at the Indianapolis 500 in 1924–25 and 1927, plus a Le Mans victory in 1921, Duesenbergs became synonymous with driving excellence. Built entirely by hand and to exacting standards, these rare automobiles stood as the pinnacle of US craftsmanship. This Model J LWB Coupe features a one-off body by Murphy coachbuilders, with complete original documentation. Having only changed hands five times, it has just 12,500 miles on the clock and was lovingly restored by dedicated craftsmen. Winning in class at Pebble Beach, its truly bespoke nature made this Duesenberg a one-of-a-kind vehicle, but its being part of George Whittell’s collection is what gives this car true desirability. Estimated auction value US$9.68 million (RM Auction, 2011)

At over 5.3m long and with a massive inline eight-cylinder engine under the bonnet, this 540K is perhaps one of the largest two-seat grand-tourers of its time. It is also possibly the last of the Spezial Roadsters ever built, with bespoke build for its original owners, including a five-speed transmission – a rarity for pre-war times. But during the war, luxury cars were too showy, and thus the car was hidden away in Germany, emerging in the Soviet Union decades later. To get it out, a reporter defied regulations and simply drove it into Sweden, thus preserving it for future generations. With only 26,000km on the clock and all numbers matching, this 540K has been authenticated by Mercedes-Benz themselves. Estimated auction value US$7.48 million (RM Auction, 2007)

oryxinflightmagazine.com

BUGATTI TYPE 57SC ATALANTE One look at the breathtaking Type 57SC confirms its desirability, but having been designed by master creator Jean Bugatti adds another level of allure. With a racederived chassis and supercharged engine, the 57SC is as quick as it is beautiful. Finding an original, however, with matching body, engine, and chassis is the real key, and Bugatti historian Julius Kruta (a man with more knowledge of the brand than anyone else alive) has confirmed its authenticity. Awarded both first in class and French Cup at Pebble Beach, the Bugatti was loving restored to its original glory a few years ago, still retaining its perfect black paintwork. Estimated auction value US$7.9 million (RM Auctions, 2011)

DELAHAYE 135 COMPETITION COURT TORPEDO ROADSTER The Delahaye 135 is perhaps one of the most beautiful cars ever created, yet its appeal lies not just in its curvaceous lines, but also in its race-bred inspiration. As close as you could get to a trackready special, the 135 Competition Court and its 130hp engine were cobbled together from parts used in competitive cars. Adding to its provenance, it still has its Geo Ham body tag. Ham, the car’s designer, was embroiled in a legal battle which saw him credited with styling only three Delahayes, of which this is the only surviving example. It is said that this car was used as a showpiece for Delahaye. Estimated auction value US$6.6 million (Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, Florida 2014)

14-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal Parera is back – fit and hungry for the upcoming 2015 tennis season, as he explains to Sean Calvert in our exclusive interview.

Interviewed for Oryx Premium by Sean Calvert world’s 5-star airline

interview 42

interview 43 RafaEL Nadal is closing in on Roger Federer’s all-time record of 17 major titles. after a 2014 season that was blighted by injury and illness, the ‘King of Clay’ is ready to challenge again, but with one eye on life after tennis.

In the off season Nadal underwent pioneering stem-cell treatment on his back and also had his appendix removed. “The treatment went really well,” Nadal reveals. “Both my wrist and my back are much better now, and I’m ready to compete. The appendix was simply bad luck and it was at the end of what I call ‘a funny year’. I had some good results during the year, but those injuries didn’t allow me to compete enough.”

oryxinflightmagazine.com

The Qatar ExxonMobil Open will be the first tournament of the new season for Nadal, who defends his title at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex from January 5–10 – and he’s looking forward to the challenge. “The tournament is a good start to the season and the facilities have been improving every year. Karim Alami (the tournament Director) does a great job and I always feel very welcome there.” Doha regularly attracts the biggest names in the game, including world number-one Novak Djokovic, who, in a change from his usual schedule, has committed to play here in 2015.

© Nike

A long-term back issue and appendicitis also contributed to an early end to his season, but with plenty to aim for when the new ATP World Tour campaign kicks off this month, Nadal is positive, though typically circumspect, about his chances of adding to that haul of major titles.

For most professionals on the ATP World Tour a Grand Slam title in Paris, a runner-up finish in Melbourne, and a Masters 1000 title in Madrid would amount to a very successful year, and the majority can only dream of such glory. But the driven Nadal is ready for better in 2015, starting in Qatar.

© Nike

After landing a ninth Roland Garros crown in the early summer, the rest of the season held great promise for Nadal before a wrist injury struck and ruled the Spaniard out of the North American hard court season, and he was to play only seven more matches in 2014.

interview 45

“I always try my best at every tournament, and I believe that is the right attitude. I only do tune-ups before matches and in the week prior to the Australian Open. Doha is a real competition and a tournament where all players are there to try to win it.” When it comes to the Australian Open, Nadal needs this title to equal the incredible achievement of Australian tennis legends Rod Laver and Roy Emerson as the only men to have won all four Grand Slams at least twice. After losing in the final last year, hampered by injury, Nadal could tie with Laver and Emerson come the end of the month. “Well, that would be amazing. To win the Australian Open again would be another great highlight for my career, and I am trying to do all the right things to try to achieve it. But the competition is tough! It won’t be easy, that’s for sure.”

oryxinflightmagazine.com

Should that happen, he would be just two majors behind Federer on the all-time list. And with nine Roland Garros crowns, how would it feel for him to win an unprecedented tenth? “I always say that winning a tournament is special, so you can imagine what it means for me to have already won nine. If I am able to win Roland Garros again, it would be important, but that’s something to look back on at the end of my career. Right now I’m not thinking about records and things like that; I’m just focused on winning and giving my best effort, always.”

WHAT ESSENTIAL ITEMS DO YOU ALWAYS PACK WHEN YOU TRAVEL? Well, in my case the normal things to have are my tennis racquets. Most of the travelling I do is to tournaments, so I tend to have plenty of racquets with me. WHAT WAS YOUR MOST RECENT MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE OVERSEAS THAT YOU WOULD RECOMMEND?

The change in the tour calendar for 2015 appears to have opened up an opportunity for Nadal to add to that tally of majors on grass, as there is now one further week between the French Open and Wimbledon, which could be key in his quest for a third title on the legendary lawns of the All England Club. In previous campaigns, shock losses – to Lukas Rosol, Steve Darcis, and this year young Australian prospect Nick Kyrgios –

I am lucky to travel around the world to beautiful places. Most of the time the tennis tour follows the sun, so we are very fortunate in that sense. I have had the chance to visit the most amazing places, but I always say that Mallorca is my favourite place (and home).

© Nike

So, the challenge will be a stern one, but Nadal doesn’t see this as a tune-up event for the Australian Open – far from it.

WHERE IN THE WORLD WILL YOU GO NEXT, AND WHY? Once I finish my tennis career I am sure I will have more time to enjoy the places I have been to, in a different way. There will be places I will discover, although I might have already been there 20 times!

on the grass of Wimbledon may be a thing of the past now that the schedule has changed in his favour. “I think that allowing the extra week is the right decision, and also benefits grass tennis – and in particular Wimbledon. It was tough to go straight like that from clay to grass. But, as well as continuing to improve his game, Nadal is also looking ahead to a life after tennis. The Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar has just seen its first foundation stones laid back home in Mallorca, and this project looks set to be Nadal’s passion once his competing days are over. “This is a very important project for me, my team, and sponsor. It is not only my future, but also something that will benefit the whole of Spanish tennis, and in

particular Mallorca as a travel destination. It will not only be a tennis academy but also an international school for kids and a state-of-the-art medical facility. A private man, Nadal rarely allows glimpses into his life away from the court, but this proud Mallorcan won’t be straying far from home in the years to come, and he looks set to be a big influence on the potential tennis stars of the future. “Now I can say that one of my main focuses after my tennis career will be the Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar. I will be very much involved in it and will try to pass on the values I always believed in to the kids coming through and following in my steps. But Nadal is far from finished with his tennis career, and 2015 could yet be a record-breaking year.

interview 51

The founder and Chief Creative Officer of Bobbi Brown Cosmetics speaks to Oryx Premium about her own personal style of natural beauty.

Interviewed for Oryx Premium by Ayesha Khan

Growing up in a suburb of Chicago, Bobbi Brown was always a little insecure about her ‘unconventional’ looks. “When I was growing up, it was so much about looking like Barbie, and I think it was always difficult for me because I don’t look like Barbie,” recalls the petite brunette as she sits cross-legged in her New Jersey garden on a crisp autumn day. “I had a lot of self-esteem issues when I was a kid. I was always using make-up because I wanted to look prettier. Just like most young girls, I didn’t think I was pretty. I used to watch my mum do her make-up; I was never as beautiful and glamorous as she was and I could never compete with that, so I would use her make-up so that no one knew that I was wearing it. That was my personal style,” she adds. What this young girl didn’t know was that her ‘personal style’ would end up launching a make-up revolution, with magazine covers, red carpets, and runways all featuring her signature nude ‘no make-up make-up’ look. After studying theatrical make-up at Boston’s prestigious Emerson College, a decision her mother helped her make one summer when she was uninterested in the more conventional degree she was pursuing, Brown stepped out into a beauty industry dominated by pale-faced, over-contoured women wearing the brightest shades of make-up (this was, after all, the eighties). “I tried to do make-up like other make-up artists, but I think I was just bad! I couldn’t draw lips, it looked silly to me; I couldn’t sculpt noses, it looked dirty to me; I couldn’t make girls’ skin look a different colour, it just didn’t make

sense to me,” she laughs, recalling how some make-up artists even told her she would never make it in the business. But, in the classic American success story of beating the odds, Brown progressed, first with her own mail-order line of basic lip colours and then with a foray into storied New York department store Bergdorf Goodman. “We wanted to sell 100 lipsticks in the first month; we sold them in the first day,” Brown recalls. Soon beauty behemoths began to take notice. “We weren’t really for sale and we’d had other offers, but none of them were ever right. Someone said Leonard Lauder wanted to meet us, and though we weren’t for sale I fell in love with him. When he said to me, ‘I know that your family is really important to you and that you don’t want to just be this businessperson. What if I told you that we could grow your business and you could do what’s important to you – being a wife and a mother?’ I believed him and here I am all these years later, so the man only speaks the truth!” Today, as Brown’s growing cosmetics line features on counters all over the world, grossing an estimated US$1 billion, her ultimate message to women is to use make-up to enhance their natural beauty, not as a mask to alter their looks. She has penned eight books on make-up and self-image and is now at the helm of Yahoo’s online beauty magazine. “I’m excited about starting these conversations about all different issues, including body image, because we all have them.

My advice is to just deal with it; it exists, you’re not alone, figure out how you can make yourself feel better.” Brown also lends her time to worthy causes such as Dress for Success, which helps American women take the journey ‘from welfare to work’; the Broome Street Academy, a New York school where 30% of students are homeless or in foster care; and the Girl Rising Fund, which helps impoverished women around the world. Whether she’s backstage at Fashion Week, creating a new palette of autumn eye colours to be shown off by her spokesmodel Kate Upton, interviewing celebrities for Yahoo, or teaching young girls how to use make-up, Bobbi Brown never takes herself too seriously. Always attentive, she offers the same warmth and empowering positivity to everyone she meets. “I always tell young kids that you have to be nice if you want to get anywhere. No matter what, you have to be nice,” she says. As for the not-so-nice naysayers who believe that her industry preys upon women’s insecurities, she simply shrugs, “I think the beauty industry has gotten a bad rap. To me it’s empowering to put make-up on that gives you better self-esteem. To be able to put make-up on so you feel more awake and prettier is an empowering thing. It’s not about wearing bad make-up, it’s about wearing make-up that makes you feel like your best self.”

BOBBI BROWN’S MAKEUP TIPS My biggest make-up advice is to not listen to the trends. Look at the trends, but take from the trends that you like. Just because everybody is wearing a red lipstick doesn’t mean you have to. Don’t ever buy make-up that someone talked you into.

Figure out your basic make-up, which I call the nude make-up. Nude make-up is make-up that’s right for your skin colour. A great combo of moisturisers for whatever your skin texture is, and whatever foundation is right for your skin, from a tinted moisturiser to a beauty balm cream. The end result has to be that you look like you’re not wearing any make-up.

Blush has to look like you’ve just exercised. Find a colour that matches your cheeks when you pinch them. Find a lipstick that’s the colour of your lips.

For your eyes, eyeliner makes your eyes stand out, and choose black mascara over brown, always. Your eyebrows should be the same colour as your hair; if you’re blonde it should be a little bit darker.

In 1977, Thierry Sabine got lost on his motorbike in the Libyan Desert during the Abidjan–Nice Rally. He returned home captivated by the landscape and vowing to share his fascination. He came up with a route starting in Europe and finishing in Dakar, and the following year the most daunting off-road rally of all time was born. The 2015 Dakar Rally begins in Buenos Aires on January 4 and Qatar’s Nasser Al-Attiyah, winner of the 2011 Dakar Rally, will be hoping to win a second title.

Cyril Neveu won for the second time in a row on a private Yamaha, while in the car class, Kottulinsky and Patrick Zaniroli were victorious.

HAUTE HOTELS Creative Collaborations

It’s hard to ignore the rising number of collaborations between international style brands and luxury hotels. These sumptuous living spaces give travellers the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in a brand’s DNA, but what does the future hold for the relationship between fashion and travel?

In his six-decade career K arl Lagerfeld has designed just about everything imaginable, from D iet Coke bottles and motorcycle helmets to haute couture. So it should come as little surprise that he is currently redesigning the hospitality industry.

lifestyle 69 ast year, the chief designer for Chanel and Fendi announced two major hotel projects that will further the reach of his already formidable eponymous brand. The first is a commission to design suites for Paris’s majestic Hôtel de Crillon, a Rosewood Hotel, which is currently undergoing major renovations and is due to reopen at the end of this year. The second is even more substantial: in 2016 he is set to open a 270-room Karl Lagerfeld Hotel in Macau. In fact, in recent years, Lagerfeld has become increasingly involved in designing for hotels. He created the impressive monochrome poolside and restaurant décor at the Hôtel Métropole in Monte Carlo, and oversaw interiors of the Alma Schlosshotel in Berlin and the Sofitel So Singapore.

Karl Lagerfeld is not alone: a growing number of international fashion tastemakers, from Dior to Armani, and Missoni to Oscar de la Renta, have teamed up with luxury resorts and hotels to put their stylish stamp on properties. Some, like the impossibly elegant Dior Suite at the St. Regis New York, distil the DNA of a fashion house’s aesthetic into a series of rooms. Other design houses, such as Missoni, Bvlgari, and Armani, have partnered with big-league developers to launch eponymous hotel brands with international locations. In the Macau complex set to house Lagerfeld’s hotel, there will also be a Versace-themed hotel designed by the Italian fashion label.

In recent years, Bvlgari has leveraged its status as an arbiter of haute taste to create its own luxury hospitality chain. This includes five-star hotels and resorts in Milan, London, and Bali. For Silvio Ursini, Bvlgari’s Group Executive Vice President, attention to detail is crucial for successfully translating Bvlgari’s aesthetic into a lifestyle context.

He is adamant that Bvlgari’s properties are about offering a new perspective on genuine luxury, not a gimmicky theme. “The priority is ensuring for the sophisticated traveller the most impeccably executed experience, and, when needed, connecting them in a privileged way to the interesting things happening in the city, from art to music to personalised fitness programmes,” he explains. “The Bvlgari brand is present in a subtle way throughout the hotel, with references coming from our

Done well, the fusion of style and luxury hospitality is not simply a case of changing the colour scheme and stitching designer logos on the bed linen. From the specially selected artwork on the walls and the scent in the corridors to the unique guest services, it adds up to a design brand’s vision of a lifestyle.

“We believe that Bvlgari is offering a new kind of luxury experience, a unique combination of contemporary Italian lifestyle with the magnificence of the Bvlgari brand’s heritage,” Ursini explains. “This starts from the way our hotels and resorts are designed, from the building’s architecture down to the smallest details, the rare and exquisite materials employed, the craftsmanship, the fixtures, and so on. It’s the way great luxury hotels were built a century ago.”

vintage archives, be they sketches of old jewels, or photographs from paparazzi shoots during the Dolce Vita.” His formula is working: Bvlgari is currently expanding its hotel portfolio and has already announced plans for launches in Shanghai 2016, Beijing 2017, and Dubai 2018. Luxury brands and their designers have a strong sense of style, and this enables them to bring values that complement the traditional expertise of hotel brands, agrees Radha Arora, President of Rosewood, the company behind Hôtel de Crillon’s multimillion-dollar renovation. The current restoration, which will be completed in 2015, will add a contemporary polish to the hotel while remaining respectful of its traditions and faithful to its character. For Arora, when it came to redesigning its luxury suites, Lagerfeld was the only man for the job.

“We are delighted that Karl Lagerfeld has agreed to work with us on the restoration,” Arora says. “Our core philosophy is ‘a sense of place’ and no one understands Paris

or the heritage of Hôtel de Crillon better than Mr Lagerfeld.” It’s not just about designing spaces; hospitality and style brands are finding new and increasingly innovative ways to collaborate. These collaborations are becoming more sophisticated as hotels develop more meaningful ties with the fashion community. The Dorchester in London was one of the first to explore these possibilities when in 2010 it launched the Dorchester Collection Fashion Prize for emerging fashion talent. The winner receives US$42,375 to help establish their business. Starwood’s W chain has formed a long-term partnership with the Council of Fashion Designers of America’s Fashion Incubator initiative, in which emerging clothing designers chosen by the council visit W’s 42 locations around the world to display their new designs. The aim is to give new designers exposure to potential customers on an international level, and has the additional benefit of cementing W’s credibility as an in-the-know style destination.

The Ace hotel chain, which has built its reputation on a hip clientele and eclectic style, also keeps its image fresh by collaborating with new fashion talents. In doing so the Ace brand has not only aligned itself with the latest designers, but it has also established itself as an arbiter of taste. This includes hosting a pop-up store by New York boutique Opening Ceremony at its London hotel, and collaborating with brands like Moscot and Converse to create limited-edition ‘Ace’ designs. While it is hard to predict how the style and hospitality trend will evolve, it’s clear that these creative collaborations are showing no sign of slowing. Instead, they are evolving into something more sophisticated. And while the financial benefits for the fashion brands and hotel chains may be obvious, travellers aren’t doing badly out of this new collaborative approach either. At its root it is about combining the best of style and luxury, and, after all, aren’t these the two essential ingredients for any great trip?

FALCONRY For 5,000 years, falcons have flown at the heart of Qatari society.

alcons are noble birds, celebrated for their loyalty, courage, and perseverance. In the autumn months, peregrine and saker falcons migrate south across Arabia for the winter. Traditionally, Bedouin trainers had two or three weeks to catch and train the birds, gaining their trust before the migration of houbara bustards from the northern hemisphere to the Arabian Peninsula and Africa, which heralded the hunting season from October to March. There are several types of falcon, and four categories: lanner, peregrine (shaheen), saker (hurr), and gyr. As part of their training, the birds need daily handling by their trainers or their wild nature takes over. They are natural hunters, preying on birds, bats, hares, and even gazelles. The name ‘peregrine’ means ‘The Wanderer’, and they can cover vast distances: falcons have conquered all the continents with the exception of Antarctica, and thrive in wide open spaces near coasts where there are plenty of opportunities to hunt. The peregrine hunts from above, and can spot prey from several kilometres away, plunging into a steep dive at

gauntlets to state-of-the-art GPS locators used to keep track of the valuable birds. Falcons are highly prized and correspondingly expensive – prices start at US$1,375 but can be as high as US$275,000 for a rare white saker. It is little surprise that the finest falcons travel with their own passports and can occasionally be spotted with their handlers on board aircraft in the Middle East.

astonishing speeds of up to 320kph. During hunts, the handlers drive the falcons ahead to pursue the prey, and follow at speed in 4x4s, tracking them closely so that the birds can be separated from the prey once it is brought down. Falconry is a hobby deeply rooted in Qatari society, and a skill passed down from generation to generation, father to son. A visit to the Falcon Souq near Souq Waqif is a highlight of any trip to Doha. The souq comes alive in the evenings when the alleyways bustle with activity, but if you are lucky you can see falcons being exercised throughout the day in the outdoor areas. They are frequently hooded – falcons are beautiful but deadly, and visitors to the souq are advised to look but not touch, unless a store owner is generous enough to allow you to handle the birds under skilled supervision. In the souq there is also a Falcon Hospital, and fascinating stores stocking everything from traditional falcon leashes and

Falcons truly are global birds. They can live up to 26 years of age, and although they are migratory they have the instinct to return to favoured eyries. Some sites have been used by falcon families for hundreds of years. UNESCO recently recognised the importance of falconry’s intangible cultural heritage for its qualities of friendship and participation across all ages. It is little wonder that this intelligent bird holds such an important place in Qatari culture, and as parents pass on their knowledge and love of the desert to the next generation, falconry instils qualities of patience and selfdiscipline, and imparts knowledge of the natural environment for the future generation.

AL GANNAS SOCIETY The Al Gannas Society was formed in 2008 to educate people about the traditions of falconry and the preservation of Qatari wildlife. From their base in Katara, Doha’s Cultural Village, the society also promotes the annual Qatar International Falcons and Hunting Festival. Contact the society at Building 33, Katara. algannas.net

enzo Piano is touted as one of the most important living architects of our time, having secured nearly every honour the architecture world has to offer, including the ever-important Pritzker Prize. Mild-mannered and more taken by his craft than his celebrity, this 21st-century Italian master talks to Oryx Premium about The Shard, London Bridge. When asked to describe the design philosophy of the Shard, Piano’s answer is manifold. “In architecture you don’t just have this one spark for the inspiration. Things just come together, with the form and the function of a building,” he explains. “One of the first things was the fact that I loved the idea of a tall building that is trying to reach a point it will never reach. When The Shard reaches 300m it breaks. That is part of the story that is more poetic. But I can also tell you that the inspiration came, very practically, from the fact that when you design an office building you need a very large floor area, but when

you design a hotel, you need a smaller floor area, and when you design a restaurant it’s even smaller. Finally, when you design a tall building, if it’s narrower at the top, you won’t have a lot of wind at the top. So there are many things that go into the design of a building. Some of the reasons are very pragmatic, some are more functional and some are more poetic,” he adds. Be that as it may, The Shard is quickly replacing the Gherkin and Big Ben as the most iconic mark on London’s skyline.

But redefining skylines is all in a day’s work for Piano, whose first iconic commission, Paris’s Centre Georges Pompidou, came when he was in his early thirties. “We were convinced that we had to do something that changed the relationship between people and cultural establishments,” he says of the controversial design that famously presented all the mechanical features that go into the service of a building on the outside in plain sight. Other iconic edifices conceived by Piano and his Building Workshop (so named because he believes that a well-crafted building is just as important as a well-designed one) include the New York Times Building and Osaka Airport’s international terminal.

oney is an integral part of Yemen’s agricultural traditions, harvested from Wadi Do’an in the Hadramout region, Usaimat in the north, and the Socotra archipelago, and collected by semi-nomadic beekeepers whose techniques have hardly changed for the last 7,000 years. Balqees Honey, available at Hamad International Airport’s Marmalade Market, produces a host of honeys, but its flagship is the Hadrami Sidr, a mono-floral honey that comes from bees that feed exclusively on the Sidr tree’s nectar. This ancient tree grows uncultivated in the remote mountains that climb up from the Wadi Do’an, some 1,000km inland from the Arabian Sea. The exclusivity is in sourcing the honey as it can only be harvested in the spring and autumn. Yet, through a great deal of time, exploration, and negotiation, Balqees Honey founder and owner Riath Hamed has secured a network of suppliers for Balqees, with the goal of making fine Yemeni honey – once almost worth its weight in gold – a currency in its own right once again.
