PROJECT RECOGNITION @ VIA EGNATIA: DESIGN SYNERGIES IN THE URBAN CONTEXT [exhibition at conference]

B Y T H E S T U D I O ’ S F A C U LT Y

This academic project takes place in the area of the most historical and important axis of Thessaloniki, the “Egnatia Street”. The objective was to locate the defficiencies of the area as well as to realize the true potential of the abundant inactive and unexploited elements of the local urban reality. Utilizing those inactive elements, new pockets of public space are created in the third dimension - having a massive impact on the urban life of the area without making immence alterations on the urban landscape. It proposes a new route on the ground level passing through arcades and penetrating the urban blocks, the conversion of blind side façades into vertical gardens and vertical activity spaces [graffiti walls, climbing walls and more], as well as a new network of routes and public event areas on an upper level with the creation of air bridges, connecting the inactive terraces of the area’s buildings with the same height. It is all about utilizing the inactive.
