10.30 World in Action Special THE SCARMAN DEBATE

Lord Scarman chairs a

studio disciicsion on the issues arising out of the three W orld in A ction specials on The State of the Nation. With the . studio audience and experts, he will be finding out what we think of ourselves as a nation and whether we are heading in the right direction. Should we accept the divisions in today's Britain, or try to change things? What duties do the 'haves' owe to the 'have nots'? Lord Scarman will be aided by a special opinion poll commissioned for The State of the Nation. The poll will show whether people in Britain are happy with their present position in society and, if not, what they would be willing to do to change it. It will find out what sort of society we think we are — one in which we pull together as a nation, or one in which it's everyone for themselves. RESEARCH JAN ELSON
