ITV, 9.50am - 11.20am Coloured in pastel shades, a pleasant if unexceptional cartoon version of the story Disney made live 20 years earlier. 1973

C4, 9.00pm - 11.55pm Not even in the same actor-director's Henry V has Shakespeare ever made such dazzling, hypnotic screen entertainment as in Laurence Olivier's Richard Ill. His power-hungry Richard Crookback is unforgettable - a ruthless, dominant, unstoppable gross black spider of a figure that devours or possesses everything in its path. 1955

Raiders of the Lost Ark ITV, 11.10pm - 1.20am High adventure driven along with tremendous panache by director Steven Spielberg. It's the kind of movie where the hero can say 'Meet me at Oscar's' while parting from a friend in the middle of the desert and no-one seems to think it amiss. Harrison Ford is terrific as the intrepid archaeologist transformed into a man of action at the drop of his spectacles while Karen Allen more than matches him as the spunky heroine following him through fire, water and (in one especially hackle-raising sequence) a pit of writhing snakes. , 1981

All Night Long ITV, 1.20am - 3.00am This is quite a nice little comedy in its gently quirky way. Gene Hackman's demotion to nightstore manager results in some highly amusing encounters with shoplifters and assorted felons and there are elements of The Graduate in there somewhere. Hackman is very good in a rare comedy role. 1981

ITV, 3.00am - 4.50am Blonde goddess Kim Basinger and peppy Nashville star Tanya Tucker both made feature film debuts in this gritty, hard-driving

C4, 10.55am - 12.30pm Who could have guessed that this modest Paramount musical could have ignited the world with laughter under the complementary talents of Bing Crosby and Bob Hope and lead to nationwide queues with the most successful comedy series of its time. In this one, the 'patty-cake' routine is invented and songs include The Moon and the Willow Tree. 1940

sideshoot from Urban Cowboy. Fairly superficial stuff, but directed with such conviction by David Greene that it works. 1980

C4, 5.30pm - 6.00pm Without doubt one of the finest and most influential British animated films of recent times, made by the same company that produced Yellow Submarine. The highlight is the flying sequence (to the beautiful accompaniment of young Peter Auty singing Walking in the Air) but the whole thing is sheer magic from start to finish. And on New Year's Eve, there's Granpa. TVM 1982

ITV, 11.20am - 1.20pm More magical adventures from the fertile imagination and painstaking creativity of special effects genius Ray Harryhausen. This time Sinbad's escapades are a bit padded out and Ray's colleagues let him down a little with some North Pole backprojection work, which might well be the Land of the Wobbly Lines. Harryhausen's own work is well up to standard, especially in the swarm of flying devils. 1977

Return of the Jedi ITV, 2.00pm - 4.55pm See panel page 51

The Red Shoes

C4, 3.15pm - 5.40pm One of the very few successful films about ballet, helped by striking design and ravishing Technicolor to delight the eye. The highlight is The Red Shoes Ballet (with music by Brian Easdale), perhaps the most effective and entertaining thing of its kind ever put on celluloid. 1948

Danny the Champion of the World ITV, 5.10pm - 7.00pm The heroes and villains are engagingly whiter than white and blacker than black in this charming adaptation of Roald Dahl's story about a father and son who hold out against scheming landgrabbers. Robbie Coltrane and Jean Marsh score well as the obnoxious developer and the child welfare agent. 1988

Ruthless People

ITV, 9.00pm - 10.45pm A broad blue-collar farce about a kidnapped wife who is so gross her husband is only too pleased not to pay the ransom, especially as he was planning to bump her off. The comedy gets funnier as it goes on, due mostly to the increasing role played by Bette Midler as the wife. For her, it's an unalloyed triumph. 1986
