Young Arnie Rogers, who earlier spotted the corpse, returns to the scene with his mother, Jennifer. She recognises the corpse as her estranged second husband. She too blames herself for Harrys death, having clobbered him with a milk bottle when he sought to force himself on her. Before the captain can hide the victim, he is disturbed by a passing tramp, by the absent-minded Dr Greenbow and by Sam Marlowe, an unsuccessful abstract painter, who sets about drawing sketches of the corpse. The trouble with Harry is who killed him and what to do with the body? When private detective Philip Marlowe is called to the mansion of General Sternwood, he finds the old and dying man sitting in a hot-house surrounded by tropical plants. It's not the only odd thing he finds. The General has two wild young daughters. One, Charlotte, is a gambler who lives among the petty criminals of the city. The other, Camilla, is a zany swinger being blackmailed by a pornographer with a glass eye. But what starts out as a simple blackmail case turns into much more. 10.45 St Nicolas CANTATA OP 42 BY BENJAMIN BRITTEN WORDS BY ERIC CROZIER

St Nicolas is.the patron saint of Christmas— Santa Claus — and it is his life that is celebrated tonight in a performance of Benjamin Britten's Cantata. Written in 1948 for the centenary celebrations of Lancing College in Sussex, it has been recorded in the magnificent setting of St Alban's Cathedral, with the Wandsworth School Choir, under their leader Russell Burgess, tenor Ian Partridge, and the Orchestra Nova of London. Although we know very little historical fact about St Nicolas, there are many legends about his life and the Miracles he worked. Benjamin Britten has woven all this folklore into a musical tapestry. The programme was the first UK music winner of the Prix Italia, in Venice in 1977.
