she/her/ella Alex is a Chicago based adventurer and supporter of the arts. She does a little bit of everything these days, documenting as much as she can with her trusty Pentax and contributing to a number of locally driven projects that highlight some of the best artists, musicians, and events throughout the city. You can hear her on a new, monthly podcast called “Yo. Check This” with friends at Pursuit of Dopeness, and tag along on her adventures and art walks via Instagram at alvarezfotos. She proudly contributed the mural section of this magazine and is excited to share more of the city through her eyes with everyone.

Jax has played bass in local bands spanning a variety of genres including post-rock, witch house, darkwave, and Spanish rock. Before the pandemic, Jax could be seen regularly attending live shows and events. She has been spending much time in her music and art studios with her Eskie, quietly working on a number of projects.

he/him Hailing from Chicago, Rob found his passion and meaning through art.

Dipping his toes in music, photography, writing and even finding his voice (all that talking finally paying off) as a loud radio co host. While growing up in Chicago, drumming in bands became his number one focus before moving to the West Coast bouncing back and forth between the Golden state of California and the scorching valley heat of Arizona. Out west his focus on writing became much stronger as he searched high and low for himself. After four and half years out west working with peers and classmates it was time to head back home. Upon his return to Chicago the search for himself continues; he documents stories in the city while working on modern noir short stories.

he/him Hex is a Chicago native who is continually exploring the city with his camera in hand. Once embedded in the Chicago music scene, he continues his love for local musicians and artists through Radio One Chicago and now through ROC. Hex has always strived to bring equity to the art scene by working to bring attention to the diverse range of artists that inhabit Chicago and its surrounding area. Hex has been proud to collaborate with the R.O.C. Team in bringing awareness of the rich culture that Chicago has to offer.

His family later moved to Chicago where he attended Saint Augustine College and earned an Associate of Arts in Spanish. He then earned a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish with a concentration in Latin American literature and a minor in Latin-American Studies at Northeastern Illinois University. He currently attends Loyola University Chicago to earn a master’s degree in Spanish. His research interest is focused on the creative writing of Mexican immigrants in Chicago. He is an active poet and writer and has participated in various poetry events in the city’s local areas

Gabe spent 5 years from 2014 to 2019 on-air with WLUWFM, 88.7f as both a host and producer for several shows including Radio One Chicago and The Morning Rush with WeekendGabe.

Gabe currently hosts and produces Weekend at Gabe’s with WeekendGabe on Twitch TV every Tuesday and Friday evening where Gabe talks with industry insiders, artists and entertainment actors and performers. Gabe in addition also is part of the Pick UR Brain Podcast with Johaz and WeekendGabe that focuses on the history of Los Angeles and California hip hop culture.

Radio One Chicago has been on the airways for close to 25 years on 88.7FM WLUW at Loyola University. Throughout the years, Radio One Chicago has relied on many amazing hosts who have each brought their own style to help enhance the show. We have always strived to bring diversity to the forefront of Chicago, not only through its arts but its people.

Radio One Chicago is #AllChicagoEverything, and we mean it! We’re a group of musiclovers dedicated to promoting exceptional local talent, from artists, musicians, and change-makers. We like to think that we have had a huge influence on promoting up-andcoming Chicago artists. We are often the first interview for many artists; we take pride in giving people a chance to present their art through our radio show, social media, and website.

With the onset of the pandemic, we found it difficult to run our show the way we wanted to. After a long time of deciding what to do, we have pivoted to present to you a monthly magazine.

Eventually, we’ll be on the airwaves again. In the meantime, we hope you enjoy ROC.

LIVING WALLS

For the inaugural Living Walls section of this monthly magazine, our first feature is Chicago artist Tubs and their interpretation of the city’s flag. Their work usually consists of a mix of lettering, calligraphy, and graffiti, with a design they have previously described as “calligraffiti.” I come across this mural pretty regularly on my daily walks in the neighborhood and although it’s a little worn out from battling the drastic weather over the years, it’s still one that stands proudly in place. This piece in particular can be found hidden away from the busyness of 18th street and you can spot more of Tubs’ work in numerous areas around the city such as Pilsen, Bronzeville, and West Loop neighborhoods just to name a few.

I KNOW WE K N O W B U T. . .

These days dragging out the words over and over again whenever you are presented with the chance of speaking to someone that you haven’t spoken to in a while or someone new, is such a pain.

“How are you? How’s lockdown going?” they ask. You wait for a moment almost wanting to scream or just wish you didn’t have to answer but you try to grasp onto something normal and kindly reply. “You know, the usual” Or “Just getting by.” Or the classic, ”Just another day in quarantine.” And the extremely popular, “I just can’t wait for things to go back to normal.”

You sigh at these thoughts and words that cycle through your mind like an actor ready at the drop of the slate, regurgitating the same lines over and over and over. It gets tiresome, dull and discouraging. Is there anything else to talk about, is there anything to keep our minds off of this plague?

What a damn pain it is to be constantly living through historical events. As I write this I think ‘pain’ may be too strong of a word or perhaps, not strong enough. It’s more of an annoyance, let’s say. Like that of waiting for a scar to heal, waiting for the drab cold months to pass with hopes and promises of green grass and not having to layer up when you leave the house. An itch inside your skull right behind your eye that you wish you could reach. If only you could manage to stretch out your nostril to a big enough opening that your back scratcher could enter to reach and satisfy. We can’t however. As much as I’d love this world to have ACME cartoon rules it just doesn’t.

Now what do we do about that? Do we hunker down and hope for the best? You definitely could and there’s nothing wrong with a little hope but with hope comes movement and hunger for change. We turn to art and creative outlets. We turn to passions and tools to help us resist and fight for what we think is right, for our human rights and most importantly our sanity.

What we’ve all seen throughout the last year

has been more than just masks and misery. We’ve seen incredible growth in our humanity and unity between people from all different walks of life. Not just how artists and creatives alike are trying to make the best out of a bad situation, but how most of us came together to support one another. We saw the world turning sour but interestingly enough there was something else going on. To myself someone or something had hit the pause button. We witnessed firsthand the halt this pandemic created. It just about stopped the world from spinning. It stopped just long enough for us to catch the things that we had been allowing to happen for too long. The world (and as much as I hate saying this) woke up, or at the very least parts here and there. But hey, it’s a start and I’ll take that, I think we’ll all take that. However, taking that alone doesn’t mean we should be satisfied with what is on our plate. Now more than ever we should be greedy and hungry for more, just down right gluttonous for change. It’s happening, slowly but surely it’s happening.

At the beginning of all of this I was in a state of denial. Why? Why did this have to happen? I was finally feeling better, things were going well, I could see the sun shining over the horizon, things were finally going to be ok. And for most of us, it was a rude awakening. Ice cold water had splashed us in our sleep. And when lockdown hit, there we lay cold and confused.

It was as if the world said, “No you don’t get to be happy. You don’t get to be better. Stay exactly where you are.” A terrible state of mind to put yourself in, I definitely wouldn’t recommend it. But we may have prematurely jumped into our beds of depression, pulling a blanket of self pity and ‘nothing-f***ingmatters’ over our heads. Something was stirring up, (CONTINUED...)

something else was happening. Why this? Why now?

Perhaps not the wrong questions to ask, I started to think. No, not wrong to ask “why this?” and “why now?” Definitely the normal reaction to have, but perhaps most of us were asking these questions in the wrong context. Then just like that, clarity hits.

Maybe this wasn’t something to hurt me, but what if it was to protect me, to help me. The frustration and hopelessness turned into a calm realization that maybe this was the world’s messed up way of telling its inhabitants to slow down. And we did, and from that slow calm grew beautiful art and powerful movements that we will continue to keep growing throughout the years to come. Sometimes you have to just cut out all the noise to hear what’s going on around you. Maybe I’m wrong but I think it’s very creepy, in a cool collective way, that we were all feeling this immense pressure build up and a sense of longing for something we couldn’t quite place. Maybe sometimes you have to slow down before spinning out of control like a big blue rock hurtling through the universe.

If you’ve managed to make it this far, I give you a round of applause and tip my metaphorical hat.

Thank you for making it through the ramblings of an amateur carpenter, drummer, loud radio co-host, and writer. A man of many hats that sit just off to the side of the head, stacked on one another to create some sort of stable foundation. It’s all we can do. Mainly because not one fits on its own. It’s a supportive system, not a perfect one, but one that works to keep this ADHD, Depressed, Obsessive Compulsive at ease.

I sincerely, with thunderous applause and salutation, thank you for your time. That was my chaotic way of not only introducing myself to you but to the wonderful team I get to work with.

This is a new venture for all of us here at Radio One Chicago and we’re all so very happy and eager to get to know you. We are just as excited for you to get to know the people, artists and creatives that make this beautiful city and home of ours so special.

This being my first article for the magazine was something exciting for me, peppered with horror and nervousness. It has turned into something of a diary entry of all the bugs in my mind, but it was my way of sharing a bit of myself with all of you. Going forward the team and myself look forward to sharing stories with all of you. Stories of the people and places that bring us hope, joy and inspiration with hopes that it may rub off on you as well. And in the coming months it would be an honor to share those with you, and have

you take some time out of your busy days to sit down and check them out with us.

We are all in this together and we are all going to pull through. I could sit here through these last lines of this chapter and give you all the pretty quotes sugar coated in hope, but I’ll be real with you. It’s been tough and more or less if we’ve learned anything throughout history it’s that things get tougher before they get better. But, through pain and struggle I promise we’ll come out of this on top. That may be a big promise to chew on but it’s definitely one to hold on to with high hopes. I’ve always been one to balance on the edge of optimism and pessimism, on a high wire dangling above a canyon of my own fears. But there’s something beautiful about how (at the very least) most of us here and around the world have banned together through everything that’s come our way.

2020 wasn’t a curse to me, it was a gift, a hard hitting gift of attention to who we are and what we want out of this life. It’s incredibly fragile and incredibly short and we must not lose sight of that.

The year that should have destroyed us, didn’t and (hopefully) if you’re reading this you’re alive.

You’re breathing and in somewhat good health, just as I am seated here writing. I am here. You are still here, and it’s important to remind yourself that every now and then. After a year of waiting for something good to happen, for things to change, we are still here.

The only thing left to think or work on rather, is are we going to let another year go by or are we going to fight, create and lead by example for a better tomorrow. I think it’s simple, surely difficult, and not without a lot of hard work but simple. Simply put, I’m thinking we keep pushing. I’m thinking we keep fighting.

Holly and Marc met when they were both college kids working on the Chicago River. They have been playing music together for 15 years and tied the knot in 2016. They make music and films with their current project, Hobbyist.

With the onset of the pandemic in 2020, I found myself becoming a hermit. I started this project to catch up with new and longtime friends during the lull of the pandemic. My hope was to take roughly 10 to 15 photos, but ended up doing over 70 in less than three months time. It was great to hear the stories of friends. I felt connected to people in a way I hadn’t felt connected before.

They know each other since back in 2006, everything started because an add posted by Paul looking for musicians to collaborate with and by 2008 they were already playing in a band, in 2010 it was clear they were best friends, in 2013 they welcomed Truman their dog, Ivan got him as a birthday present for Paul, since then Truman has became one of the best things that have happened to both of them, also in 2013 Ivan moved to Paul’s house and they have been living in the same place in Wicker Park until today.

Louda

A Spotlight on Latinx Music in Chicago While we await the return of live music performances, we’re sharing music and videos you can continue to enjoy safely at home. These Latinx artists cover an array of music styles sure to be enjoyed by everyone.

Louda started the year off with a bang with a new single and video for the song, “Equity”, a critique on what’s going on in the US as the rich get richer and the poor continue to be ignored and cast aside. It’s a powerful song and also, as a heads up, NSF radio.

The Mini Projects

Pattern Dreams is the latest EP release by The Mini Projects, a dreamy rock-pop band formed by siblings Emi, Mikey and Angel. Their fun, vintage rock vibes remind us of another Chicago band, The Lemons, but in español. The band is currently working on new music and is slated to release a new video soon.

The Braided Janes

Latin rock band Las Juanas Trenzudas (their band name in Spanish) were busy releasing new music in 2020 while preparing for 2021. When protests erupted after the killing of George Floyd they created the single, “I Can’t Breathe”, with monies from the single supporting BLM advocacy work and also in tribute to Breonna Taylor and those affected by police violence. Their latest single is “2020” and it’s a recap of emotions experienced through the turbulence of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Marisol La Brava

A Flor de Piel is the name of the trio Marisol La Brava forms along with her husband and daughter.

The alt-folk trio enjoys blending genres although their foundation is based on traditional Latin music like son jarocho, cumbia, and AfroLatin rhythms. In 2020, shortly after the quarantine was set in place, A Flor de Piel committed to playing a daily/ virtual one-hour show that lasted through Halloween. What a feat!

Their most recent releases include a cha-cha remix by DJ Afroqbano of their song “La Bruja,” a winter-time celebration song titled, “La Conga del Viejo” and our favorite, “Mental Lockdown”, which discusses feelings of loneliness and despair due to the pandemic.

Singer-songwriter and producer Joslyn Marie just released ELLA a 4-track EP that showcases the artist’s vocal range and ability to effortlessly handle different genres. The album focuses on self-love, female empowerment and overall positive vibrations.

From soul to pop and jazz and R&B, Joslyn Marie handles any style of music with grace and when she’s not busy producing new music or singing somewhere, Joslyn Marie can be found coaching aspiring vocalists.

Robot Consciente

Alternative rock band Robot Consciente, formed by some of Chicago’s most talented rock en español musicians, debuted a new 2021 release, Tu Noche Brilla. The EP features four tracks and two remixes and includes a new video for the title track, “Tu Noche Brilla”, which was filmed entirely in Chicago.

“Writing has always been a place for me to ease my anxieties,” says Sophie Brochu, the leader behind Fauvely, a project that since 2017 has ranged from a solo endeavor to a 6-piece band. “Waiting on an answer, coming around a bend in the road too fast, watching a loved one plunge beneath a wave. A lot of my inspiration comes from the moments in which I’ve found myself holding my breath.” Fauvely, which is an iteration of the French word ‘fauve’, now encompasses Dale Price on lead guitar, Dave Piscotti on drums, and Phil Conklin on bass, an arrangement that has become something more akin to family. The group’s 2019 EP, This is What the Living Do (Diversion Records) was called “perfect dream-pop” by The Chicago Reader. With honest songwriting and melodic guitar lines, Fauvely has cultivated a strong following in Chicago, landing support slots for Stella Donnelly, Hand Habits, Say Sue Me, Ellis, Alison Sudol, Ultimate Painting, Ryley Walker, and Laura Veirs. Fauvely’s forthcoming LP, Beautiful Places, is set to release on April 2, 2021.

How long have you been together now?

Sophie: Fauvely is one big family. The line-up evolves depending on what’s needed.

You were all musicians in previous projects. How has your sound changed from your previous projects to when you started Fauvely to where you are all at now?

Sophie: The last EP was pretty shoegazey with Scott Cortez (Astrobrite) in the mix. The new album is a lot more pop-centric, though still guitar-driven. Dale has really stepped up with his guitar-playing. Before we were concerned with holding back, minimal playing.

This album, I really wanted Dale to shine, and he does.

I was also listening to more country-esque music while writing. You can hear some subtle twangy undertones.

Dale: The natural tendency when you get a group of people in a room is to be as loud as possible all the time. When I first started playing with Sophie, it would often be just the two of us. As the band filled out APRIL 2021 / WWW.RADIOONECHICAGO.COM

again, we still tried to have more of a dynamic to the music.

How were you able to stay in contact and work on music during the pandemic?

Sophie: Well, we text every day, lol. Releasing music really takes an emotional toll on me. I’m in a season of listening to the universe right now. When it’s time to write again, it will come fast. I’m practicing patience with myself and with the world.

Dale: Certain songs on the album were written at the start of the pandemic when we still thought things would get back to “normal” fairly quickly. Our energy shifted to release prep, so we’re working, but on different elements.

What did you learn about yourselves/each other while writing music during the pandemic?

Sophie: I’ve been thinking about what it means to play music in a sustainable way--how it can look in five years, ten years, etc. This has really forced us to stop, to slow down, and think about long-term goals.

What do you think the future holds for the way Fauvely writes and records music going forward?

Sophie: If I knew, that would really take the fun out of it :)

Dale: I love technology, and I want to figure out a way for us to collaborate beyond just getting in a practice space once a week… although I think we all have Zoom fatigue now.

With many things going virtual, where do you feel live music will be going for Fauvely?

Dave: I think we will do as much virtually as makes sense, but live virtual music just cannot match the energy and feeling of being on a stage in front of (CONTINUED...)

people. The second we can safely play in venues for an audience, that’s where we’ll be.

You’re fairly active on Twitter, what are your views on social media?

Sophie: I love that. These songs may sound sad, but they are hopeful. Writing and playing music is magical.

It’s such a privilege. I’m grateful to be able to do it at all.

Dave: A necessary tool that can be as frustrating as it is useful.

Sophie: Yeah, it can feel pretty toxic for me at times, but we’ve also made important friendships and connections through social media. When we’re finished releasing the album, I’ll welcome a break from all of it.

Dale: I love it. Most of my music discovery has shifted to seeing what people talk about and share on Twitter - magazines and blogs have become so dependent on ad revenue, they rarely take risks, but peeps on social media just share what they love.

What type of relationship does Fauvely have with social media?

Dave: Platonic bordering on “it’s complicated.”

Dale: I used to work in social media. Like any tool, you can use it in positive or negative ways.

Recently, I saw that you posted about a conversation you had with another artist about success. Do you have a measure of success?

Sophie: To be able to constantly evolve as an artist, to carve out time to experiment, to have people around you that care and can challenge you. These are all small measures of success that matter greatly.

What is a goal you are hoping to achieve with your new album?

Sophie: To better ourselves as musicians and people and to connect with others. For anyone struggling with mental health or feeling lonely, if they hear our music and feel less alone, I feel we did okay.

Dale: For me, it’s always about trying to connect. You don’t want to change songs to be cool or popular, but you don’t want to keep people at arm’s length all the time. Even if the sentiment isn’t always upbeat, I think this album is very melodic and inviting.
