ARITZ

ARANBURU Portraits _ José V. Glez / Fanfi Shop

27 years old Quiksilver, Pukas, Moskova ZARAUTZ, GUIPÚZCOA

Of every cover , we interview the protagonist about his impressions of his image occupying that important space. We love to change the routine, thats why, putting a picture of most the most international Spanish surfer of this country, give us a touch of purity and elegance, characteristics from him, at this moment we know, the words are useless, and standards, much more.

His look says delivery, talent and charisma, words fail to convey all his effort in every season. Despite how hard that is this tour, Aritz has managed to do what very few surfers are able to achieve, and even put his picture beside to the best ones. This house wants to thank you for all your contributions and ways of understanding the surfing culture.

Show this gallery of portraits, is the only way to bringing them to the other side of the picture that, on very few occasions, we are accostumed to seeing in the media. They are all linked to the Ocean with the same purpose, be in a full glide. The discipline that

gives the same, they feel that their lives, without that passion, would not make sense. Freessurfers, longboarders, professional and a media star, disparate places prepared natural moments, all in 35mm b / na 3000 ISO

Stoner, photographer, pioneer in California cultural scene of the 1960s. A decade in color and B&W.

R0N ST0NER The smell of empty tide reached the courtyard of the wooden house. And it is together with the resin and paints. Background I could hear the roar of the waves. They have been there, since the existence of oceans, before man was man, before he had even life on the planet. They will be there when we are gone forever and our history has forgotten in the infinite time line. He was the first, we certainly know this, the first teacher, then came many more, but the first one, never forgets, because it’s in the magazines we read, in our museums, and in our memories. He paved the way for others,

like the mountaineer that crowns the summit of Everest for the first time. His photos became the cover of “Surfer” six times consecutive, enlightening in an age, where catch waves was something new and different. And in those moments, when the echoes of gunfire gave wars overseas, Ron Stoner squeezed out the juice to each swell. History not makes it clear that who was the Grandmaster, they say that he was hooked on drugs, and because of them he suffered from schizophrenia, was taken to mental hospitals and treated with electro-shocks, so common in the post-war period. These

treatments left in a catatonic state, and in 1977 disappeared.Same still go travelling distant places, or they killed him because of some secret conspiracy. Maybe, he died peacefully in his bed at the hospital and was buried without penalty or glory, trying to forget as well the legacy he left us. Either way, aren´t even to the height, or these words nor this House, but remind you is to remember our origins, those which we discovered along the banks of the sea when the waves began to intensify against the shores of our memory.

Naum Ildefonse seen by Pujol from another angle more usual, but certainly surprising.

LAURENT PUJ0L

r e v o l u t i o n a r y

Ambassador to the North Shore and faithful to the French banks, so the experienced surfer Pujol. Years of pilgrimage to the Pacific and aware of the many tubes that already has in it’s extensive curriculum, what began as a curiosity, has finished making it water photographer of truth, many surfers that haveit trying, but that have fallen by the wayside. Pujol was always a surfer of great seas, which, the challenge of being in the right place, has not been a difficulty. He spent several years working with a long lens from the water, giving a personal touch and possibly going out of the canons of the already famous fish-eye. That made him

36  RADICAL SURF M A G A Z I N E

stand out quickly, but has done something that many have been carried it out, but without success, are the recent images of two months ago with Sancho Landes (see the editorial), towed by Alain Riu. Pujol in one hand takes the housing and on the other will releasing the tape, ready to surf with Sancho. Both are on the wave, deeper Puyol and in many cases without leaving, but with a job that has revolutionized the way of seeing theaquatic photography, a concept suitable for experienced surfers, or who wish to die in the attempt. This phenomenon of wanting to show the world a vision shared by two surfers, is a gigantic step, or a new beginning.

I was getting too much water. Everyone got ready to shrink it with what they had at hand, the heavy seas threatened to capsize the boat. ─ This year would not. Thought David Lyman. He had already participated for two years earlier in a similar expedition, together with a ship replica of the old boat used by the Polynesians, the Hawaiian with Tahitian islands. This year, the Hokulea, from18 meters length, would be among others a beloved character, Edie Aikau. A true athlete who shared his time saving lives and surfing the biggest waves at Waimea Bay. Now, with the water above the knees, and waves that threatened to engulf them, this dream is longed more and more impossible. And when the sea, finally made it to capsize the ship, the dream turned into just one thing, survive. Edie, inmediately said to the captain that he would come with his table to seek help. Lyman and several of the sailors had to persuade him to take a life jacket.

38  RADICAL SURF M A G A Z I N E

It disappered soon, paddling in the waves. Edie, thought he saw the coast of Molokai last night, so there, along with two sailors, led their table. It was the last time that saw him alive. The body disappeared forever into the dark abyss of the ocean, that he loved so much. Aikau, who had challenged the biggest waves participated in events where he struggling against the best in the world, as Barry Kanaiaupuni, Terry Fizgerald, Mark Richards and Shaun Tompson, (the last two were World Champions), disappeared forever, trying to save the lives of their fellow travelers. From him we have his memory, his skill and courage in big waves, and never will be forgotten, because since 1986, is held in Waimea Edie Aikau invitational, it makes the best surfers on the planet and in conditions in which the waves go out of the seven feet in height. Edie would go!

FLASH

O n e

m o r e

r e a s o n . . .

The surfer is nonconformist by nature and if we add to that a photographer has incorporated into its housing a flash, it’s a blessing to be until the sky is closed, and even on nights of full moon nights, which also held sessions. Get a good picture, is much difficult if we bear in mind it´s only worth a shot at the full power of flash. To do nothing better than having Jonathan Glez, a perfect professional. Chose the beach with the right tide and after half an hour, the result was gotten. It should be noted that on oter occasions attempts have not given the expected result, but the sky and technical data are the other 50% of the work. We love this kind of images, we know that they arouse curiosity and sometimes become amazing. We try to offer photography from a different perspective, that aims to Radical Surf whenever you come to the field.
