UN-SCHOOLING
MENTOR : Trilochan Chhaya SITE : Borders of National Park, Thane, Mumbai DESIGN INTENT : The preschool years represent a time of expansive psychological growth, with the initial expression of many psychological abilities that will continue to be refined into young adulthood. Likewise, brain development during this age is characterized by its blossoming nature, showing some of its most dynamic and elaborative anatomical and physiological changes.
Contemporary Schools have reached a point where rooms and spaces are intended to meet precise functional needs, and the function of school is framed in neat periods of time, dedicated to specific areas for teaching. Conceptually, the design of the school is such that it activates different sensory experiences in different spaces for a complete activation of the mind and body cells. The K-12 school design breaks away from the contemporary school designs to bring out a change in the way teaching and learning takes place. Philosophies of J. Krishnamurthi and Rabindranath Tagore play an extensive role in the school design.

This school is built on thE philosophy of J. Krishnamurthi and is committed to foster -the spirit of inquiry in the students -to make them think critically -to encourage them to pursue their own knowledge and discoveries, andto engage them in self-reflection The school was a low-rise structure built on a terrained surface, creating interesting outdoor learning pockets. The school tries to focus on J. Krishnamurthi’s ideology of integrating nature into learning.
The Architecture Team had an approach designed to inspire and engage children in outdoor activities, but without sacrificing on creating a sense of place. The importance of playing is widely known in facilitating and generating learning and creativity. The design team played around with different ideas that developed into a design that does a good job of capturing a sense of play and fun in a landscape that includes plantations, roads, small lunch areas and courses.
Natural light plays a very important role in the sculpting the spaces. It is brought in to the space through two sources: an oval skylight over the staircase void at the entrance that acts like a lantern to light the inner section of the site and a double storied louvered window towards the external facade of the estate. Spaces are open and visible through transparent screens. This ensures that all classrooms and foyers are naturally lit through the day with minimal dependence on artificial lighting. Smooth curvilinear sweeps demarcate the program and accentuated flow of the spaces in contrast to the hard, sharp edges.

METRO + PLUG IN
MENTOR : Mr. Priyank Mehta SITE : Malad, Mumbai DESIGN INTENT : The intent was to create a transport hub that could serve multiple activities. The functions of the plug-in were selected and designed after a detailed analysis of the site surroundings for multiple days at various times. The first step was a study conducted on existing metro station traffic movement and design at Andheri Metro Station. The case study was
well documented and analysed to understand finer details of design. The next step was a understanding what kind of facilities could be proactively used next to a metro station. After freezing all programs, the massing exercise helped understand the volumetric arrnagements of the project. The massing was then further carved out to create interesting spaces with water bodies and green patches. The circulation was deisgned to provide easy commute for daily users of metro and provide them with waiting areas and cafes, and yet transform this space in to a leisure activity space on weekends-a design serving as a transport hub and a mixed use space.

NATU-RE-SORT
MENTOR : Ms. Tapan Mittal Deshpande SITE : Lunuganga, Srilanka TEAM : Radha and Jay DESIGN INTENT : Different spaces, due to the difference in materials, the spatial arrangement, light, touch and sound, activate various human senses. Naturopathy explains how it can help to cure human beings by stimulating all our senses. Similarly, this center of naturopathy,
which aims to accelerate various senses in different areas of the structure, has been developed, enabling people to increase the use of each sense in different sections of space. Walking on a path interspersed with trees, for example, the shuffling sound of pebbles and cobbles or the chirping of birds all evoke various sensations within us.A strict schedule of time should also be kept in naturopathy. So, the distribution of the circulation is such that it responds to this time schedule. In order to be able to communicate with nature, spaces are semi-covered. The residential areas are 9-10 meters high and are surrounded by trees and birds chirping.

DESIGN CONCEPTS : Bawa - relationship between buildings and landscape - relation of that landscape within the building. ‘Good Sri Lankan architecture’ - place, to light, views, topography, materiality and climate. Lunuganga - series of separate contained spaces. From the house it is possible to set out in any direction and combine the different parts of the garden into any one of an infinite number of possible spatial sequences.
WIND
LIGHT
The transitional spaces - activate senses - create a path leading to multiple enhanced spaces - feel closer and within nature - helps restoring a balance in ones mind and soul thus being cured by nature. A space becomes a retreat for people who come to be with nature not only for ailments who come to be cured with natural therapies but also ones who seek peace and joy of being with nature.
NATU-RE-SORT
WHERE ? The site selected is a balance of all the experiences that were felt in Lunuganga as a whole. The area of focus has proportions of water bodies, paddy fields and tree cover thus creating permutations and combinations of various sensory enhanced experiences by creating vistas, play of light and shade and the acoustics of nature

CASA DAL MARE
MENTOR : Ms. Anjana Chhaya SITE : Capri, Italy DESIGN INTENT : The brief stated a study of an exisitng villa and the proposal of a guest house next to it. Villa Malaparte is a secluded villa on a cliff top in Capri. The only way to access the Villa is through the deep blue water or by foot from the nearest vehicular drop-off. The Villa has an iconic presence due to the bright orange color and a rigid form.
The guest house was names Casa Dal Mare - in Italian means Villa by the sea. The guest house took into consideration the climate and accessibility. The idea was to provide a panoramic view of the beautiful vast sea. I didn’t wish to take away the importance of the existing villa so the guest house was designed such that it camouflages with the cliff and is carved out of it.

2. ACCESIBILITY: The site accesibility is through waterways on the south facing side. Having a guest house along the same pathway before reaching the main villa gives some privacy to both the individuals.
3. CLIMATE : The cliff facade facing South recieves good natural light as well as good wind direction.
4. PANORAMIC VIEW : Having a built form on the facade of the cliff will give them a full panoramic view of the ocean from each point and also not block the view from the existing villa
5. CAMOUFLAGE : The material and finish designed so as to match the rock color to camouflage it and let the iconic presence of the orange villa remain.

HARVARD: DESIGN DISCOVERY
MENTOR : Ms.Sudeshna Sen SITE : North End, Boston, USA Design Discovery is a six-week summer program at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design (GSD). The program had three departments : 1. Architecture 2. Urban Planning and Design 3. Landscape Design I chose the department of UPD. The 6 week long progam was divided into 3 main exercises that were meant to explore the existing
conditions of a given site in Boston and then propose a solution to the exisitng problem. I got the opportunity to explore the North End of Boston. The first exercise was a comparison of a housing typology in Boston to the one in Mumbai. The second exercise was analysing the land use pattern of North End. The third and final exercise was to select an existing problem on site and provide a design solution for it. The program was well curated with a mix of seminars, lectures, site visits and group discussions. The summer was well spent exploring a new department, a new city and meeting amazing people.

PROFESSIONAL WORK
INTERNSHIP : February 2019 - June 2019 EMPLOYEMENT : August 2019 - Present Working at Perkins Eastman has helped me grow as a designer and as a person. The different type and scale of projects helped me learn about the design approach that is required for different projects. On some projects I worked on the Design Development drawing set, while on some I did a massing exercise to develop the form and layout. Working at PE I not only got the oppututnity to work with the Mumbai Studio, but
also with the New York and DC office. Interacting with people across offices helped me build my confidence. My biggest take-away is the positive and energetic work environment that allows for self growth. The director of Mumbai office, Supriya Thyagarajan has been an amazing boss and a true leader helping each one of us enhance and flourish in our careers.

6.1- HAMSTEDE STUDENT HOSTEL : SITE : TATHAWADE, PUNE, INDIA SIZE : 1,05,650 sqft ROLE : Designing the Room layout and Ammenties, Design development and Interior designing, Site supervision and material selection. DESIGN INTENT : The design of this hostel is centered around three key concepts: • Home, not a hostel • Sense of Community • Youthful and Bright The design seeks to create a place that is not a hostel, but a home for
students, where they might spend their formative years as young adults without missing the comforts of home. This is a place where they can form strong bonds of friendship and become part of a meaningful community. A place that is youthful and bright and fosters healthy living. These three concepts were integral to the design for the shared amenity spaces and the rooms, as well as inspiring the choices for materials and furniture throughout the building. Each room has a distinct theme, examples of which are forest, ocean and sunset – nature inspired and peaceful getaways for the students
to rest or study. The amenity spaces are the perfect balance of contemporary and cozy, designed to have a fun and eclectic vibe with colorful accents. The aesthetic is industrial - minimal yet modern, combining a raw concrete shell and sustainable elements like reclaimed wood and metal mesh with bold graphics and patterns. Facilities include the reception and lounge, reading room, games room and gymnasium and a cafeteria with an outdoor terrace. These spaces encourage residents to make the most of their free-time here and come together as a community.

DESIGN INTENT : The design Module below illustrates ‘Structural coloration’, the peacocks ability to control the color of their feathers, by persistent fluctuating layers (a result of constant cellular activity). The final module is a depiction of a the coloration of cells frozen in time, the mechanism serves to show the nature of a lattice in its self organising mechanism state creating volumes of space within.
DESIGN INTENT : The installation depicts a metaphorical representation of themystical Kalpavriksha tree. The 5 elements of nature - earth, air, fire, water and sky (depicted by the colors on the base ) churn together in this conundum called universe. These forces of nature come together to give birth or ‘create’ the biotic sphere. The consequent spinning of the base and the modules depict the cyclic nature of creation.
