For designer Jan Brown, rooms possess an innate sense of power— they can swiftly invoke a feeling of awe, an enveloping sensation of comfort, or the irresistible draw of dynamic energy. As principal of c3d design, she is innately attuned to such power, wielding it to her advantage as she shapes and transforms spaces with uncanny precision and a discerning eye for harmony and timelessness. The creative fusion of design elements and the impact of space composition have always been passions for Jan, an interior design graduate of Toronto’s Ryerson University, who worked on corporate interiors in New York City before relocating to Hong Kong. She returned to the Toronto area in 2001, swiftly adding a stable of prestigious residential projects to her portfolio. Her fresh, elevated approach to design is directly informed by her love of distinct cultures as well as her travels throughout Asia, including China, Japan, and India. Such an international perspective contributes an illustrious dimension to her classic yet modern aesthetic. Multidimensionality is a cornerstone of Jan’s overarching design philosophy, where she seamlessly moves from residential to commercial projects at her full-service firm, specializing in everything from home renovations, space planning, and furnishings selections, to custom builds and multinational corporate offices. Keenly attuned to the faceted layers that define a room and its uses, she curates the careful balance between form and function. She is dedicated to pragmatically solving her clients’ lifestyle needs while satisfying their personal aesthetic through exceptional design work. With a signature approach to space, design architecture, and client service, combined with meticulous attention to detail and proportion, Jan and her team of designers are constantly inspired to create new, compelling designs that are ripe with character and uniquely perfect for each client.

PAGES: A complete renovation, this Craftsman-style home was designed to beautifully flex to meet the needs of a growing family. Livable and welcoming, the family room leads to a French bistro-inspired kitchen, where a medley of stainless steel, Carrara marble, glazed light grey cabinetry, and dark blue accents create an elegant yet friendly mood. Textural painted walls, reminiscent of stamped tin, along with reproduction vintage cage lights both infuse the space with historic character. Homework and art, which are often pinned to the refrigerator and the pantry’s chalkboard doors, only add to the charm.

LEFT: Space and storage are at a premium at this intimate downtown Toronto property, where the open-concept kitchen and dining area serve as a unified space for cooking and entertaining. Custombuilt banquette seating seamlessly accommodates guests without the clutter of extra chairs. Built-in drawers and shelving smartly house everything from serving utensils to intriguing collectibles and accessories amassed during the homeowners’ travels. FACING PAGE: This urban loft, overlooking Toronto’s High Park, is strikingly attuned to its surroundings, taking full advantage of the view with 22-foot-high, floor-to-ceiling windows, a wraparound balcony, and luminous light flooding every square inch. Neutral hues and natural materials, including walnut millwork, marble, and softly radiant polished concrete floors, impart an organically elegant sensibility. Subtle differences in texture and tone, along with a custom wood shelving unit, delineate the living area and kitchen. A stone waterfall island, embellished with sculptural pendant lights above, acts as both culinary workspace and social gathering spot. The homeowner’s collections from around the world—from hammered silver to coral pieces, shells and hand-woven textiles—contribute a compelling sense of depth. LEFT AND ABOVE: Designated as a heritage home in the prestigious Rosedale neighborhood of Toronto, the property maintains its Victorian tradition in the exterior street façade and original interior living areas. However, the rear addition demonstrates a gradual conversion into more contemporary styling with a family room that’s anchored by a concrete fireplace wall. The kitchen’s stainless steel appliances, custom cherry millwork cabinets accented by glass doors, and custom crystalfilament pendant chandeliers suspended above the massive 14-foot island each speak to the modern transition. Bold shades of orange, burgundy, and green, fueled by the homeowners’ love of color, put an artistic, spirited spin on the open-concept space. PHOTOGRAPHS COURTESY OF C3D DESIGN, INC.

“I love when clients come to us with unique design requests—it’s very rewarding when we hear them say that we achieved their highest dreams.” –Jan Brown

The intimate dining area and lounge were designed for both elegant entertaining and relaxed socializing. Previously white and sterile, the space was renovated to convey warmth through rich hues and comfortably accommodating furnishings. The statement, geometric red wallpaper informed the selection of fabrics and accessories with a similar motif. A trio of mirrors creates a sense of depth while reflecting the dark crystal chandelier, a progressive twist on the traditional light fixture.

Anne Hepfer Designs, Inc. 1004 Eglinton Avenue West Toronto, Ontario M6C 2C5 416.800.2485 www.annehepfer.com

Achieving a “perfectly soul-quenching balance” of design in each and every room is second nature to Anne Hepfer, as she transforms interiors from blank canvases into captivating, statement works of art. Acting much like a painter, she innovatively mixes a layered palette of saturated colors, lush textures, sculptural furniture and oneof-a-kind accessories that reflect a multitude of influences— from the global cultural scene and international fashion runways to historical eras, architecture, and even dreams. Yet perhaps her most constant source of inspiration is the natural environment as she looks to harness the energy of the great outdoors and bring it inside. Anne and her team at Anne Hepfer Designs, Inc. have even been known to spend from dawn until dusk in a room, watching as sunrays skip across every angle in order to capture the right interplay of light and shadow. Keenly aware of the delicate dance of design—and that spaces are not only to be admired, but also lived in— Anne works closely with her clients, carefully curating every element to achieve impeccable proportion and scale and a functional plan. She has long created signature furniture and home accessories for just the right fit, which led to the launch of her own boldly hued collection, ah ha!, all featuring luxurious ostrich leather and custom-crafted in South Africa, where a portion of the proceeds support local schools there. The sentiment and the spirit of the pieces couldn’t be a more perfect pairing to her richly multidimensional, soulful interiors.

A fresh and friendly family room is essential in a home. While everyone tends to congregate in the kitchen, a warm and comfortable space to relax and entertain guests cannot be underestimated. The punch of a crisp hue, such as this apple green, is incredibly welcoming. It also gives this Toronto home a flash of appealing brightness while satisfying a craving for lush color, especially when it’s cold and gray outside. The color motif repeats in the demi-lune-shaped, breakfast nook, located right off the family room, where ultra-suede, Douglas Levine dining chairs are both practical and striking. The bubbly, resin light fixture adds effervescence to the weighty, clean lines of the antiqued brass table topped with checkerboard cerused oak, which was designed by Marlieke Van Rossum.

PREVIOUS PAGES:

Evoking a quietly formal yet inviting mood, this living room is designed to entertain guests in comfortable yet luxuriously appointed style. Tone-on-tone neutral hues, fresh linen curtains, and mixed metals create transitional accents amidst the more traditional design of the home, while symmetrical design cues set the stage for works of art by Erin Rothstein and Tim Pitsiulak. Most of the sculptural furnishings, including the coffee table, sofa and chairs are custom-made, with the silver-trimmed, ostrich-leather console tables from Anne’s signature line, ah ha!. On the opposite side of the family room, a Chuck Close portrait hangs above a console crafted in sting ray shagreen. The attention to symmetry continues with two polished nickel lamps; extra seating for guests comes courtesy of two pull-out cubes.

“There is definitely something to be said for a touch of whimsy when creating beautiful interiors—something a little unexpected; a conversation piece.” — Anne Hepfer

Original, wood-paneled walls in the library of a brick-clad, Georgian-style home establish a stately presence for this transitional room that also smolders with mod ’60s-inspired, sultry appeal. The curves of the shapely, verdant-green sofa and white wing-back chair soften the sleek lines of the gilded, smoked-glass coffee table and contrasting side tables, achieving the ultimate balance between masculine and feminine energy. Layered elements, such as colorful art pieces by Josef Albers and Scott McFarland, printed accent pillows, and vintage Maison Jansen gold-leaf pineapple lamps with dramatic black lacquer bases and shades, all provide a touch of whimsy. Crisp, white linen curtains with Greek key trim offset the darker tones while a David Hicks custom chocolate brown and white rug unites the space with a contrasting yet complementary geometric pattern.

FACING PAGE: Canadian modernist Jack Bush’s 1976 vibrant canvas entitled “Allegra,” provides a focal point for this formal living room; a gut renovation where Anne tore down several walls to completely transform the space into a gallery-inspired setting for the homeowner’s art collection, including a Sorel Etrog statement sculpture. The remaining walls were finished in a subtle white Venetian plaster, which provides beautiful depth to display art. Illumination from custom picture lights was a necessity since concrete ceilings prevented the addition of recessed lighting; a crystal lamp nearly disappears from view—intentionally, so as not to interrupt the effect. Every piece was selected and curated to be an integral part of the room’s artistic story—from the Art Deco chairs, reupholstered in graphic silk velvet, to the verdant moss-green sofa with peacock-colored pillows, and the custom-designed metal coffee table with an illustrious labradorite stone insert. A grey wool and silk-bordered rug quietly connects the space while dark-stain espresso floors provide a contrast to this vividly imagined yet clean and contemporary design. “The smallest of artisan-crafted details can make all the difference in the world when it comes to a home’s distinct design personality—from hand-carved wood pieces to meticulous copper accents and intricate limestone work.” —Lloyd LeBoeuf

The bar area of a recreation room demonstrates the power of sleek minimalism in a contemporary, transitional space that features custom chrome shelving and floating cabinets paired with white marble counters and a marble backsplash.

ABOVE RIGHT: Designed to reflect the homeowners’ love of Tuscany, the Italian villastyle home on Ontario’s Georgian Bay boasts a magnificent yet rustic charm. The immense chandelier was custom-made for the living room as were the silk brocade furnishings. The painting over the fireplace slides down over the television screen when not in use.

FACING PAGE: A premier example of classic Tudor style, the 4,300-square-foot home in Lawrence Park features the subtle dimensionality of Indiana limestone mixed with superior board and batten work, leaded glass windows, and appropriately scaled buttresses at each side. The front door portico is highlighted by an intricately hand-carved, wood gable that took more than a month to complete. Inside, the traditional Tudor interior echoes the exterior design.

Although the stately, 5,000-square-foot home is a replacement property on a unique corner lot, it appears as if it has always been part of the exclusive and established Lawrence Park neighborhood of Toronto. Thoughtfully designed to mirror the existing architecture of surrounding residences, its traditional Indiana limestone exterior is enhanced with impactful details such as beautiful filigree ironwork, only magnifying the impressive, manicured curb appeal. However, there is more than meets the eye with this home, as its traditional exterior gives way to a contemporary, transitional interior space, well evidenced in the two-story family room anchored by a large pendant chandelier and a serenely muted color palette.

“The only limitation is the imagination. We are solely focused on quality, while constantly pushing the envelope to deliver interesting and innovative solutions that strikingly resonate with the architecture.” —Spencer Crouch RIGHT: Naturally refined, soothing tones characterize this private villa in the

Tumbled and chattered Belgian wood floors are an earthy, rustic complement to the sleekly contemporary space. The uniquely warm, honeyed hue of the wood planks was achieved through the rapid acceleration of the wood’s natural oxidation, a process pioneered in Belgium.
