Three cheers for Threeways! A not-for-profit organisation has recently taken over the old Ridings School in North Halifax with the intention of the local community getting involved in the management and day-to-day running of what will become the Threeways Centre. Opened in June, the Threeways Sports Centre is just the start of a three-year plan to develop the Threeways Centre, providing different areas dedicated to enterprise, community, health and wellbeing. Threeways Sports Centre Manager, Paul McLaughlin, oversees a variety of activities at very reasonable costs, including Zumba classes and a ‘Just Ladies’ session. Threeways wants to inspire change in the area, develop local partnerships and most importantly, run Threeways Centre with the community.

Many Brits will be hopping over the Channel to France this summer, but how many families will be confident enough to speak the language whilst there? A Yorkshire mum of 3, Leanne Jefferson, wants to help change this and get children learning French when they are most receptive - at an early age in nursery and primary school.

in and around our area to help you entertain your family during the break – so keep it handy or see www.familiespennines.co.uk/whatson . We’re back in September with a packed schools and clubs & classes issue. If you want to be included, our deadline

Leanne, a French language teacher, has developed an innovative, userfriendly programme ‘Learning French with Camembear’ for Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage One.

is 12th July so contact 07580 612800 or editor@familiespennines.co.uk . Have a great summer!

Leanne says, “The magic of ‘Learning French with Camembear’ is that he is so engaging and children love to speak with him. He is stored in ‘le sac magique’, comes out of ‘le sac’ for the French session, and then is returned to ‘le sac’ to retain the aura of magic! It’s a very simple programme to deliver, is very user friendly and has proven so with nonspecialists. With the Tour de France coming to Yorkshire in 2014, it would be nice to see this programme working in all Yorkshire primary schools in time for next summer.” To help get your child’s nursery or school involved, contact Leanne Jefferson: enquiries@headstartlanguages.co.uk, 07725 813321, or see a clip of Camembear in action at www.headstartlanguages.co.uk.

People have different concepts of debt. Some of us are fortunate to never know what this word means, some find it hard to admit that they are in debt whilst others don’t even know that they are. DEBT can mean the most stressful, and sole destroying experience of our lives. But in order to solve a problem we first have to admit that we have one!

Her national babyballet classes are for girls and boys aged six months to five years. “At babyballet every child is treated as an individual and never made to feel different from the others, whatever their ability. Our classes give youngsters confidence, make them feel more positive and gain independence too.” She suffered badly from post natal depression but believes starting babyballet really helped. “I suffered with my first two children - it was the worst thing ever - but because I had started developing babyballet when the girls were born it really helped me focus. I still have low times but recognise the signs now and manage it better. I want others who are suffering to have faith that they can come through it.”

Holiday to book (and pay for!) ...Childcare to book (expensive!)... Free Activities to dream up (only so many picnics and swings a child can put up with!) …Theme park trip (credit card!)... Seaside (increase overdraft!) ...Visit friends (savings for the train ticket!)

Claire’s dream of providing ballet classes for any ability came from her own unhappy experience. Instead of being the star pupil - her mother, Barbara Peters, was a professional dancer and teacher - she found that traditional ballet classes didn’t work for her. Claire says, “I loved ballet but it didn’t love me. I was the wrong shape and couldn’t master the moves. It left me with a tremendous lack of self-confidence and a poor body image which followed me into later life.”

Check out the babyballet website for classes near you and summer events (plus read about the NEW babyballet theme tune!) www.babyballet.co.uk.

The competition runs from Saturday 13th July – 1st September and then a selection of judges will pick the winners. Not only will the winner see their design in print and sold for a good cause, they will get the chance to win prizes donated by Electric Bowl, Vue Cinema and a selection of independent shops within The Piece Hall, so it’s well worth entering.

The words HOLIDAY and SIX linger painfully in my head .

Song and dance academy, babyballet, started in 2005, based in a converted Halifax mill, by local mum of 4, Claire O’Connor. Since then, she has expanded via franchises all over the UK, designed fab party packages, created shows for family events all over the UK, and gained both local and national recognition not just for her passion for her business, but for being such a hard-working mum.

Claire says the brand is built on trust, credibility and meaningful relationships – both in and out of business. “It’s challenging not just for me, but for all the franchisees, juggling the demands of a family and running a business. It’s manic sometimes but girl power really is alive and kicking!”

The Halifax Visitor Centre inThe Piece Hall wants kids to design a new ‘Postcard forThe Piece Hall’ and has launched a great competition. Free to enter, there are two age groups - 4-7years and 8-11years. Entrants will have their design displayed in the Visitor Centre & Art Gallery until the judging which takes place at the end of the school holidays. One winner from each age group will have their postcards printed up and sold in aid of Forget me Not Children’s hospice in the Visitor Centre and other shops withinThe Piece Hall

O.M.G. THE 6 WEEKS HOLIDAYS………...

Halifax mum and entrepreneur, Claire O’Connor, founder of national children’s dance academy, babyballet, tells her inspirational story.

Claire’s hard work has paid off and babyballet is going from strength to strength. Claire’s business aspirations include hitting the 200 franchise mark and having 50,000 children at classes within the next five years. She would also like to take her brand to other countries.

A new monthly club for children and their families has been launched by local mum, Chayley Collis. Huddersfield Eco Action Team (H.E.A.T) meets at various locations in the Huddersfield area on Sunday afternoons around once a month. Aimed at children aged between 6 - 16 and their parents and guardians, it is possible to attend the club regularly or just for one-off events and is free to join, however some events may require a small charge for materials for example. H.E.A.T. is planning a visit to Stirley Community Farm open day on Sunday 1st September, to take part in fun activities for children and learning about energy efficiency & growing vegetables. Chayley says, “I set up the group because I felt there was nothing for children and families to take action on environmental issues at dates and times that fit around them. I want the club to be fun and sociable and a chance to meet others who care about these issues.”

Hipperholme Grammar School Foundation Celebrates Successful Inspection Staff and pupils at Hipperholme Grammar and its Junior School are celebrating their Independent Schools’ Inspectorate’s Report from May, which portrays the School as a secure and caring family environment providing a good education for pupils of all ages and highlights many excellent features. The Junior School demonstrates that pupils develop strong independent and critical thinking skills, showing much initiative. Senior School pupils demonstrate high levels of independent

abstract and critical thinking and very good powers of analysis. Pupils’ personal development was reported as excellent at all ages and well supported by excellent pastoral care throughout the School. They found that the School is very effective in promoting good behaviour and guarding against harassment and bullying, with pupils’ spiritual and moral development reported as excellent. What’s in a name? Successive governments have changed the format and names of examinations with for example ‘O’ levels becoming GCSEs and recent news suggests the GCSE grading system is to be axed. One thing that never changes is the need for maths and English skills - children who are able and confident with maths and English will be able to cope with any exams, no matter what the name. The earlier a child is identified as having numeracy or literacy needs the quicker they can be helped with tutoring and the better their future potential. Students who are exceptional at maths and/or English greatly increase their career potential. NumberWork’nWords is about helping your child to be the best they can be. Summer Holidays Some parents (and can you believe children) find these holidays long and difficult. The challenge is to keep young people active (mentally and physically). Here are some activities for the summer holidays that cost very little but help keep your child’s mind active: • Keep a scrap book for drawings and photos with captions of holiday adventures. • Make a collage of holiday photos. • Play board games. • Library activities. • Take a walk or explore - looking out for specific things e.g. find something in a museum/gallery/ along the river. • Get family quiz sheets from NumberWorks’nWords - call us and we will send quizzes to you. • Facebook www.facebook.com/NumberworksnWordsuk for weekly ideas to entertain and educate the children. Summer holiday Classes: Numberworks’nWords Huddersfield will be running classes for maths, English and 11+ preparation in August for the Kick Start Programme. This programme prepares children for the coming school year and re-focuses them for the learning to come.

A non-residential course will take place at Delph’s Castleshaw Centre over 4 days with the option of taking part on any day, a combination of days or all of the days on offer. But hurry – the course is on for only 4 days and spaces are strictly limited. The Castleshaw Centre is tucked away in a beautiful setting close to Delph and very handy for Oldham, Huddersfield and Halifax. It has its very own amazing climbing wall and close access to open water in the form of a small local reservoir. This means that activities on offer are right on the doorstep. The Centre is part of Oldham Council’s Outdoor and Environmental Education Service and is used for school and other similar organisation visits from single days to overnight stays in the accessible residential facility. With Roman ruins and a myriad of local wildlife the Centre is a hidden gem and feels much further into the wilderness than just 15 minutes from Junction 22 of the M62! Adventure Training will provide an exciting opportunity for young people to attain nationally recognised certificates in two Adventurous Activities: • Paddlepower and Star awards for Canoeing and Kayaking

Activity camps at local schools Following the success of the Olympics last year and with getting kids active a priority for many families then a popular mix of childcare and entertainment is provided by an activity ‘camp’. Hipperholme Grammar School is hosting Kings Camp’s NEW Multi-Active programme from 22nd July – 23rd August. This is a chance for children from 4-14 to try lots of new activities including parachute games, dodgeball, basketball, hockey, tennis, football, cricket as well as arts and crafts alongside team challenges and events. Children of all interests get the chance to develop their skills, make friends and discover new activities. Visit www.kingscamps.org for more details. Oldham Hulme Grammar Schools will be running a camp called Bat and Ball Activities for girls and boys aged 6-14 from 22nd to 26th July with morning and afternoon sessions and a supervised lunchtime available too. Activities include football, cricket, tennis, swimming and multi-sports. There’s nothing like a dip in a cold pool on a hot day – so make sure your little ones are prepared this summer. Swimbabes, the Holmfirth based baby and toddler swim tuition experts give us some Dos and Don’ts for swimming with your baby or child this summer. (Remember, these tips are for guidance and your child’s safety is your responsibility.)

Swimming DOs Use bathtime ‘splash about’ to introduce your little one to water. Pre-potty training, you need a good swim nappy. Outdoors ensure they have a suit that covers their skin and gives good sun protection. Consider buying a specialised baby wetsuit aimed to keep them warm. Toddlers should go down the steps with adult supervision or enter from sitting on the side using a “swivel” entry. (Hands on the poolside, swinging bottom towards you in the water and slowly lower them in.) Jumping in is fine if an adult is in the water and the child is standing and walking confidently - the water mustn’t be more than 1½ times the height of your child. Keep heads out of the water - even in swim aids they might sink their head. Limit swim time to no more than 30 minutes.

Swimming DON’Ts Don’t feed baby or allow your child to eat at least one hour before swimming – take a snack or feed your baby after – they’ll definitely be hungry and tired!

The programme for the week looks like this: • Day 1 (Tuesday 30th July 2013): Rock climbing induction • Day 2 (Wednesday 31st July 2013): Rock climbing improvement

Make sure your walking child takes a BIG step into the pool so that they don’t catch the side with their head.

• Day 3 (Thursday 1st August 2013): Open Canoe/kayak induction

Don’t let your child ‘drink’ the pool water

• Day 4 (Friday 2nd August 2013): Open Canoe/kayak improvement

Don’t let toddlers and walkers run near the pool or on slippery floors.

Costs are £30 per day or just £100 for the full 4 days. Participants will need to bring a packed lunch and the Centre will give guidance on what else to bring. Please do contact the centre as soon as possible to ensure your child secures their place. Castleshaw Centre, Waterworks Road, Delph, Oldham, OL3 5LZ. Stir gently and leave to settle overnight or longer to thicken up. Have fun making bubbles with your homemade bubble wands!

Search for nice smooth stones in the garden or at the beach. Use acrylic paint and transform them into animals, bugs, people, monsters or use your imagination. Use googly eyes, buttons for noses or scraps of fabric or wool for clothes & hair.

Bend a pipe cleaner in half, form a circle at the bend and then twist to join. Add some beads to create a handle (leave some pipe cleaner to bend up so they don’t fall off). Experiment with different shapes like squares and triangles, or join pipe cleaners together to make big wands! Bubble Mix 1 teaspoon glycerine (from chemists – also called glycerol), 2 tablespoons concentrated washing up liquid, 1 cup water.

In the sun stand and cast shadows on paving stones. Take in turns to draw around the shadows, add details like faces and clothes, and make different action poses! Sponge Water Bombs

Place them on top of each other, wrap an elastic band tightly around the middle, fluff out to make a ‘pompom’, soak with water & then have a water fight! Softer than water balloons & last longer - ideal for both garden and beach! Getting kids active over the summer can involve giving them opportunities to enjoy an adventure - within boundaries. Liz Smallman, Visitor Experience Director at Eureka! The National Children’s Museum, Halifax, considers how risky play can help our children to develop. I was talking with friends about the ‘dangerous’ things we’d do when we played out as kids – like the infamous tree jumping challenge - 3 grades – ‘easy peasy’, ‘bit braver’ and ‘broken arm for sure’ – no padded floors, supervising parents. TRUST our children to take risks

“Physical activity is activity that involves movement of all the major muscle groups and the body (the trunk) from one place to another” Source: Joint home countries Chief Medical Officers report Start Active, Stay Active 2011 In essence we NEED to MOVE - A LOT throughout life. The report says that walkers under 5 should be active for at least 3 hours spread through the day and 5-18 year olds at least 60 minutes up to several hours a day. Could you keep a note of how many minutes a day your child is active and make small changes to transform their activity levels?

3 top tips – 1. Make sure your baby’s clothes do not restrict movement. 2. Allow your toddler to walk with you and park the pushchair for a little while during outings. 3. Help your older child get active outdoors. So make a start this summer - and keep your family moving this summer and beyond.

Philippa can run a practical fun workshop for your group about moving with your child to support their ‘whole’ development. Contact Philippa on pyoulden@inspire.fsbusiness.co.uk follow her onTwitter @philippayoulden or visit www.philippayoulden.co.uk .
