TOP TIPS FOR PERSONALISING YOUR BAG FOR LIFE NOW CHARGING FOR PLASTIC BAGS IS IN FORCE This October the 5p charge for single-use plastic carrier bags came into effect in England, for larger retailers, to help the environment and benefit charities. Families Pennines asked Brighouse’s Judith Schur of Needlecase (www. needlecase.co.uk) for top tips to upcycle your ‘bags for life’. Judith says, “Buy cheap, plain, cotton bags and decorate – perhaps with your own crochet or applique. Or cut and sew your bags from old jeans or duvets or how about using knitting lined with fabric for strength or crochet using cotton which isn’t as stretchy as knitting. Best for the environment - use old plastic bags cut into strips and then knitted together!”

EDUCATION AND CHILDCARE Are We Over-Testing our Children?

Brighouse Dyslexia Centre

By Carey Ann Dodah, Explore Learning’s Head of Curriculum

SUPPORTING CHILDREN AND ADULTS

In the UK, the move towards the new curriculum and introduction of new assessments such as the the Baseline Assessment tests, Phonics Screening check, and KS2 SATS including the new SPAG test, is disturbing many parents, who are concerned that too much emphasis is being placed on teaching children to pass tests. So what exactly are these tests? Here is an extract from our website – for the full article see www.familiespennines.co.uk/educationchildcare. The Baseline Test 1:1 formal test that will take place within a few weeks of a child starting school. It focusses on a child’s literacy and numeracy to generate a ‘baseline’ against which to measure progress to Key Stage One and Two. The Phonics Screening Check Taken by pupils in Year 1, this test is designed to confirm whether pupils have learnt phonic decoding to an appropriate standard. It will identify pupils who need extra help to improve their decoding skills. KS2 SATS National Curriculum tests which are taken by pupils at age 11 at the end of Key Stage 2. Tests include: The SPAG Test An English grammar, punctuation and spelling test which assesses a child’s English skills in four key areas: spelling, punctuation, grammar, and vocabulary.

French Fun for Heathfield Children from Year 6 at Heathfield School took a residential trip to France for five days in September, staying in an ancient chateau and using their French language skills in a variety of situations – in an artisan bakery, the market at Le Touquet, a snail farm and, possibly more enthusiastically received, a chocolatier! As well as language work, the children also enjoyed visits of historical interest to the immense V2 rocket factories at La Coupole and Le Blockhaus d’ Epercules, and the Commonwealth War Graves.

‘Outstanding 2011/12’

Anthony Wilkins, Head of Heathfield, accompanied the children on their visit to France, and explains, “Travel to other European countries is a fantastic experience for our Heathfield pupils – a chance to use language skills developed through specialist teaching in class, to see for themselves some of the effects of the occupation of France in World War II, and an opportunity to bond by undertaking physical challenges at their chateau.” Take a closer look at the schools – Juniors, Heathfield and Seniors, Rishworth – www.rishworth-school.co.uk. EDUCATION AND CHILDCARE Admissions to Oldham Hulme Grammar School Oldham Hulme Grammar School (OHGS) is taking registrations for the Yr7 Entrance Examination (2016 intake).

Memorial library is pinnacle of a summer of investment at Hipperholme Grammar School Hipperholme Grammar School has opened a brand new library named after one of its longest serving teachers who passed away earlier this year. The Petford Library – commemorating former History teacher Alan Petford – will serve as a lasting reminder of the former teacher’s dedication to the school, both in the classroom and as a long-standing Governor. Following the £12,000 investment from the school, the former staff meeting room has been turned into a modern library, complete with an array of fiction and non-fiction books. Twelve tablet computers have also been installed to aid student research, following a donation of over £2,000 from the school’s Parent Teacher Association. A series of projects took place over the summer holidays to improve facilities throughout the school, with more than £72,000 invested across various projects including upgrading kitchen and catering facilities and new, energy efficient boilers. The Year 7 Entrance Examination for 2016 is on Saturday 21st November, 8.30am-12pm. Register or find out more by calling Mr Andy Eastcrabbe on 01422 202256, email a.eastcrabbe@hgsf.org.uk, www.hgsf.org.uk.

The OHGS Entrance Exam takes place on 13 January 2016 and consists of papers in English, mathematics and verbal reasoning (specimen papers in maths and English can be found on the School’s website). Those who pass the criteria will be asked for an interview in February of the year of entry. Entry to the co-educational Sixth Form is a minimum of five satisfactory GCSE subjects (Grade C or above), including English and mathematics and each sixth form applicant will be interviewed. The Sixth Form Open Evening for prospective candidates and their parents will be on 19 November 2015. Helping dyslexic children with spelling, by Francine Garnier of Brighouse Dyslexia Centre Dyslexic pupils often have difficulties with phonological awareness – the ability to hear and identify sounds in words – which means they may have problems learning to spell. English words can sound the same but be spelt differently, such as ‘their’ and ‘there’, or they are not always written as they sound, for example, ‘have’ has a silent e on the end. Vowels represent sounds both on their own, as in ‘cat’, or blended together, such as in ‘through’. This can be very confusing for dyslexic people and create insecurity when learning to spell. Help your child identify parts of words you can spell sound by sound and the tricky parts you need to memorise. For example, to spell the word ‘light’ you need to remember there is a ‘gh’ in it. Using colour and pictures can create a memory hook. See more strategies at www.familiespennines.co.uk/educationchildcare. Other useful websites include www.spellzone.com/pages/ dyslexia.cfm, www.nessy.com, magicalspelling.co.uk. CHRISTMAS CHRISTMAS SHOWS

BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN FANCY DRESS AND EVERYDAY CLOTHING www.clobberbox.co.uk, 07786624837 Bridging the gap between fancy dress and everyday clothing If the kids are choosing fancy dress when a nice top and trousers would be more appropriate, you need to take a look at Clobberbox.co.uk! Launched by Huddersfield mum, Ruth Whitbourn, Clobberbox.co.uk is a website devoted to imaginative clothing for kids. Ruth’s own experience of putting up with her children in dressing up box clothing inspired her to start Clobberbox – a collection of quality clothing and fun accessories great for every day, but with a nod to the child feeling they are dressing up. The range includes British brands, organic fabrics and always ethical. Ruth says, “I’m really excited to launch Clobberbox, after 2 years in the making alongside my day job. What we offer is totally different to anything else around at the moment.”
