And March is the month when I move on. I am delighted to announce that I have a very worthy successor, Emily Raleigh. A local mum, Families reader and business woman, Emily will be a fabulous new Editor and will take the magazine from strength to strength. RUDDI’S RETREAT AND GWENNIE’S GETAWAYS BOUNCING BACK IN 2016
Families Pennines HQ was sent a sweet book for young children, by Wyke based author and illustrator, Louise Aaron. Jamasaurus (think strawberry preserve rather than nightwear) is a rhyming tale packed with fun illustrations of our hero trying to find something delicious to eat in a pre-historic world.
Huddersfield Charity Ruddi’s Retreat had a bit of a bad year in 2015. The Charity’s caravans were broken into and there was great upheaval in Linthwaite as they had to move their cafe across to the other side of Manchester Road.
What do the kids think: the younger ones liked the rhyming and simple pictures, whilst the older ones found it easy to read – children of all ages liked the description of a large part of a dinosaur’s anatomy that was used to rhyme with ‘plum’…
Ruddi’s Retreat was set up to provide much needed holidays to families touched by childhood cancer by supplying lovely static caravans in Filey. A brand new sister good cause has just been launched – Gwennie’s Getways. Dementia patients and their families can apply for respite stays in the caravans completely free of charge. This additional service was launched on 24 February.
Louise has been taking Jamasaurus out to local play gyms and trying the book out in schools too. See where his next event is by visiting the Undiscovered Books Facebook page. The book is out now and costs £5.99.
BATH FIZZY MAKING MASTER CLASS FROM SCENTED EVENTS
Fizzy Making Master Class! Each young guest gets to colour, scent and decorate their own Bath Fizzy Cupcakes to take home or make as a gift. NEWS As National Training & Business Development Manager with Electrolux Home Products UK, and later as Youth Worker & Trainer with a Halifax-based, award winning charity delivering training in the outdoors to develop self-confidence and life skills, Trudy gained vast experience during her impressive career which she is now putting in to delivering First Aid training to a diverse range of clients in her new venture. Trudy says, “My aim is to continue with the ethos that Kiss It Better’s previous owner, Emerald Brook, created – to deliver practical, flexible and fun First Aid training for both professionals and families. I recognise that people have busy lifestyles so it is important to be flexible and by working for myself I can adapt courses to clients’ needs wherever possible.” Having concentrated on Accredited courses, which meet the needs of Workplace Compliance for Businesses and Professionals, Trudy has now put together a programme of short bespoke courses for families, parents, carers, grandparents and expectant parents.
Schools across Calderdale have been coming up with their own fundraising ideas to help the four schools which have been badly affected by flooding and many have donated via a fundraising web page set up by staff at Bowling Green Primary School – with over £26,000 pledged by mid-February. Paul Cobbing, Chief Executive of the National Flood Forum, will be the Independent Chair of the Calderdale Floods Commission. The Commission will consider the causes, the impact and response to the flooding across Calderdale. Members will invite written submissions and hear evidence from local residents, community groups, businesses and key agencies, such as the Environment Agency. AFTER THE FLOOD Many people in our area have been personally affected by the Boxing Day floods, or know someone who has. With communities still coming to terms with the aftermath, the remarkable thing is how neighbours and volunteers from near and far have pulled together. The Book Case
Janet Warne, Secretary of the Mytholmroyd Marmaladies Women’s Institute says, “It’s been devastating. Most of the local community buildings have been severely damaged, and all the shops were under water.”
Janet has been amazed at the amount of help that has been offered and how communities are supporting one another. In her own area she is part of a team planning a wonderful event, the ‘Reet Royd Waater Do’, on 30 April (www.facebook.com/reetroydwaaterdo). With stalls and activities, there will be lots of fun things to do – including wanging wellies, rather than wearing them! Janet says, “It’s a chance to get our amazing community together again to raise funds and, importantly, to educate and prepare local people for the next flood.”
Emily is a local mum based in Huddersfield and has two young children, Joseph (5) and Eliza (2). She comes from a PR and marketing background with over 11 years of experience under her belt, as well as running her own successful freelance PR business for the last four. Due to family commitments, Rachel has decided to stand down from the magazine and pass the baton onto Emily, whom she believes has all the credentials to hit the ground running and has no doubt that she will do the magazine justice. A big thank you to Rachel for all her hard work, passion and dedication over the years, turning the magazine into the success it is today. We wish her all the best for the future. The Book Case was one of the Hebden Bridge shops hit by serious flooding last Boxing Day. Uninsurable after the 2012 floods, the owners used social media to ask the literary community to help re-stock Paul Cobbing their shelves. Kate Claughan, children’s book buyer at the shop, says, “We’ve had donations from children’s publishers Chicken House, Dorling Kindersley & David Fickling, among others, and a grant from the James Patterson Fund for Children’s Book Sellers. Booktokens has also donated to affected schools in the Calder Valley.”

Heathfield was privileged to receive a very special delivery from NASA, via the Natural History Museum in London. Heathfield pupils in Year 6 were the first to open the case, with two people operating the padlocks before four people worked together to release the catches. Inside the pupils found an amazing selection of objects – meteorites from Mars, tektites from the Libyan desert (made when sand is fused into glass by the incredible impact of an object falling to Earth) and, arguably the best of all, samples of lunar rock collected by astronauts on the Apollo missions. The delivery was only possible when NASA were satisfied that the school had put into place high levels of security including officials at the school being sworn to secrecy and signing declarations to the

Children throughout the School had a chance to look at the exhibits and a chance to handle many of them. In Year 6, it was the culmination of a project on space which had seen a visit from a spaceman, trips out, and an investigation of strange goings-on in the extensive outdoor areas. Mr Anthony Wilkins, Head of Heathfield, says, “Officials came to visit the School to ensure that our site was properly secure and that we had storage facilities sufficient to hold objects deemed to be ‘irreplaceable’ and ‘beyond value’. The loan of lunar samples was an amazing chance to become a part of one of the greatest adventures in human history, and was an incredible way to help learn about our place in the solar system and beyond.”
potential if they’re not developing effective work habits, according to Steve Uttley, of NumberWorks’nWords. “Struggling students often experience feelings of hopelessness so overwhelming that they don’t know where to begin to catch up. It may be that they have difficulty organising their time, materials and priorities, or they may just need to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of their reading, writing or studying,” says Steve. But whether they’re falling short or performing well above average, most students can benefit from improved time management, organisational techniques and study skills. Steve suggests some tips you can share with them: LEARN TO LIST Itemising specific tasks (homework to do; assignments to complete; tests to study for; problem topics to master), along with when they should be completed, and which may require extra help, is the first step in regaining control. For the fallen-behind student the first list may look daunting, but this makes crossing off completed tasks all the more satisfying.
Good habits work wonders for students of any ability.
DIARISE AND PRIORITISE Students should take a homework book to every class, fill it in immediately homework is given, and bring it home every day. Have a large desk calendar at home to complement the homework book. Parties, sports days and other events that prevent homework being done should be noted. Then each day’s homework can be transferred onto the calendar, dates of tests and due dates of assignments entered as soon as they are announced, and appropriate preparation scheduled. At the beginning of each session the day’s homework should be reviewed and prioritised. Work due tomorrow should be completed before tackling longer term projects.

Set up a file at home for notes and tests that will be needed for exam preparation (having them easily accessible reduces stress as exams begin to loom). PREVENT DISRUPTIONS Make sure the workspace has all necessary supplies – paper, sharpened pencil, ruler, etc. The space should be away from distractions such as TV and visitors; mobile phones and games consoles should remain off. Pre-School Rules! Clubs and classes for pre-schoolers By Sally J. Hall We take a look at the kinds of activities you can find near you to keep your pre-schooler amused.
Little ones can learn how to kick and control the ball, use gross motor skills and understand teamwork. Mini rugby is always gentle and does not involve contact and the skills and size of the pitches are suited to the kids’ ages. Look for a local club which may allow kids to go into more serious games as they grow.

Arts and Crafts There are lots of places to drop in to get involved in crafting with your kids. They can learn skills such as painting, gluing, cutting out and sticking and of course the art of adding glitter! Gymnastics Indoor gym activities are good for rainy days and help with flexibility and strength. Look for classes suited for very young kids that show them how to roll, jump and use

From nursery rhyme sing-alongs in the local park or café to learning a simple instrument, teaching a very young child to love music will give them a lifelong gift. Look at local classes from national brands Rhythm Time (rhythmtime.net) and Jo Jingles (www.jojingles.com).
Dance
Learning to swim is a great and useful life skill and it seems that the younger you start, the less likely it is that your child will be nervous in water. Many local leisure centres run mother and baby swim sessions where you can start to teach your child how to gain confidence in the water. Theatre It’s never too early to start treading the boards and there are lots of drama and acting clubs for even quite small kids. All children aged 8-12 are welcome, younger children need to be accompanied by an adult, and there is no need to be a member of RSPB. With the number of child abductions in the UK increasing year on year (www.childabduction.org.uk) and NSPCC figures suggesting nearly half of children and young people (46%) have been bullied at school at some point in their lives (www.nhs.uk/Livewell), to be able to offer children some practical help in time of need seems like a really good idea.
The Children’s Protector is a series of fully interactive DVDs teaching all aspects of children’s safety via carefully selected martial arts academies and consoles such as Xbox and PlayStation. Whilst the interactive DVD, which can be played on Xbox and PlayStation, can be studied at home by children with their parents, it is the practical teaching in a professional setting by qualified instructors which is the preferred teaching option. CVBBA has become the locally approved partner of MANTIS, the company which has devised The Children’s Protector in partnership with the Anti-Bullying Alliance (ABA), hosted by the National Children’s Bureau (NCB). Bob Sykes, Senior Instructor at Colne Valley Black Belt Academy, says, “We were immediately impressed. The programme takes techniques from martial arts and adapts them specifically for young children to be able to apply at the beginning of an assault at someone twice their height and twice their weight.”

The Great Easter Egg Hunt Keep up this fun tradition with your children this Easter By Sally J. Hall Easter means different things to different people. But for the kids it is quite simple – it means time off school and plenty of Easter eggs! So why not organise an Easter Egg Hunt with your children and their friends? Here’s how to make this year’s Easter’s egg hunt one that will be talked about for years to come.
Don’t forget! Easter Sunday is March 27 WHAT IS AN EASTER EGG HUNT? The Easter Bunny, helped by the grown-ups, hides eggs and treats around the house for the kids to find them on Easter morning. The planning is almost as fun as watching the kids finding the eggs and you can make it as simple or as complex as you like. FIRST, THE SHOPPING LIST Buy a few eggs per child. Look for packs that are cheaper than individual eggs. Perhaps buy some small gifts as well as eggs – books, fluffy chicks or colouring pens. Find holders for the children to collect the eggs in such as paper bags, baskets, plastic bowls or flower pots. Make a note of where you have hidden all the eggs!! SOME NICE IDEAS TO DO THE DAY BEFORE, ESPECIALLY IF IT’S RAINING Get the children to decorate the holders they will collect the eggs in. Decorate paper bags, line baskets with straw and tie on a ribbon and add a label with the child’s name on it to the pots. WHERE CAN YOU DO AN EASTER EGG HUNT?

At home, inside the house. Great if the weather’s bad. Lock rooms that you don’t want the children in. In the garden. If it’s fine, this is ideal. Put the eggs out in the morning. Why not make bunny footprints from flour or talc near each hidden egg? In the woods. If you live near some open space, gather the kids in one area until the adults have planted the eggs and clues. Then let them loose! SOME GROUND RULES So that the children all feel they have been treated fairly and for safety, it’s important to have some rules. When they have collected three eggs, they must come back to ‘base’ before going off again. Give the kids clear boundaries that they must not stray outside. If you’re outdoors, place small kids with grown-ups or older children for safety. Help kids get a fair share by collecting different colour eggs each – wrap them in coloured paper. Make those intended for the small kids easier to spot.

The Star Tree Studio in the centre of Littleborough has come up with a fab idea for Easter – a craft with a difference.
Get older children to help younger ones. MAKE IT BETTER Make it more fun with activities along the way. Tell an Easter themed story, or play some games. GIVE US A CLUE Add an extra dimension with clues. You could also make a treasure map for them to follow. Think of a theme – numbered pictures of bunnies, pirates looking for buried treasure, fairies looking for magic eggs.
Neela Jackson who runs the Studio says, “One of our popular activities at the Studio at the moment is modelling with Foam Clay. It’s a wonderful, squishy, tactile modelling compound which is soft, not messy and easy for children of all ages to use! “We discovered it was very easy for children to decorate a polystyrene or plastic egg and allowed them to really use their imaginations to think of creative and fun designs!” Here’s an idea of what you can make.

Hop On Board the Easter Eggspress at the Kirklees Light Railway this Easter weekend Travel by steam train aboard the Easter Eggspress at the Kirklees Light Railway from Friday 25 March to Monday 28 March from Clayton West to Shelley to meet the Easter Bunny where children can take part in an Easter Egg Hunt.
