NEWS

New starts for the new school year… After an extra-long school summer holiday for many families, we have now merrily packed the children off to school. Most of us will be standing in the playground for the umpteenth time, but for some this will be a new experience. For our take on the 10 mistakes parents make when they’re new to school life, see our education pages, where you’ll also find our handy guide about how to visit a selection of local schools for those who are looking at their child starting or moving school in 2016. And at this busy time if you want to avoid activity overload, our clubs and classes section considers age appropriate pursuits including some of the best ones available in our area. As your children ‘fly the nest’ back to school this autumn, now is the time when stay-athome parents look at flexible working, so take a look at our feature on how to find your dream job now the kids are at school… ...and that leads me to tell you that Families Pennines is up for sale! As my family are now ‘fully fledged’ secondary schoolers, the time has come for me to pass the baton to the next generation of enthusiastic parents of 0-12s who love what we do and want to become part of the Families family. Maybe becoming a Families editor and franchisee working at home around your family could be YOUR dream job? See our ad opposite for more information including contact details so you can just pick up the phone or email to see if you might be the right person (or people) to take the area’s most popular parenting magazine and website to the next level! NEWS WRAP YOUR LITTLE ONE IN LOVE THIS AUTUMN In the beautiful Calder Valley nestles a wonderful artisan business providing desirable crocheted hats and booties for babies, lovingly hand-crafted by local mum, Ronnie Wright.

WHY THIS MYTHOLMROYD MUM IS SO PASSIONATE ABOUT HER COMMUNITY Just over two years ago, Janet Warne was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer. At the time Janet was enjoying the playgroups in her community with her toddler, Thomas, and she was just about to set up a local WI group, the Mytholmroyd Marmaladies. Understandably, the diagnosis devastated her and her family as they prepared for 2 years of mastectomies, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and further surgeries.

Ronnie says, “My journey to motherhood was protracted, and aged 41, I welcomed my daughter into the world. Finally holding this precious creature in my arms, I had an overwhelming desire to wrap her in soft and beautiful things. I knitted her blankets and clothing, which met a deep-seated maternal urge in me to provide for her.” This loving skill developed into Ronnie’s unique business, Purl’s Handcraft. Exclusive designs are made entirely by hand with on-trend colours and soft, baby-friendly textures. The winter booties have suede bottoms, lined with sheep’s fleece, and a woollen crochet upper. The summer booties and slippers are made with either 100% cotton or a cotton-silk mix to keep tootsies cool! Materials are locally sourced wherever possible. For purchases, orders or commissions contact Purl’s Handcraft – 07867 643694, purlshandcraft@gmail.com, purlshandcraft.squarespace.com.

Luckily Janet had a critical illness policy with Aviva which she had taken out years before to cover a small mortgage. The policy covered her condition and its proceeds meant Janet and her family could focus on her treatment rather than worrying about money. Happily Janet had her final operation in October 2014 and in November 2014 she started working for Aviva to spread the word in her community about why protecting you and your family against critical illness is so important. Read more about Aviva and how to get in touch with Janet on page 5.

EXCITING CHANGES FOR TOMTAG The creative mums behind TomTag, the colourful school bag packing checklist, have recently introduced 2 new ranges – ‘I can do it’ packs to teach self-help skills and ‘I know what to expect‘ sets for making timetables and schedules for home, school or going out.

Helping to protect what’s most important When we think of our children’s future, we imagine them happy, surrounded by friends, sharing the best life has to offer. It’s only natural to want the best for your child. But if one day you were critically ill, or no longer here, you’d want to know that their life would still be fulfilling, that they’d still reach their true potential, that money worries wouldn’t hold your family back. Aviva Protects is a totally new approach to family protection An Aviva Protection Adviser in your local community can help you to financially protect your family should the worst happen. Which means you can enjoy today knowing you’ve prepared for tomorrow. Your adviser will take time to get to know you – they are not on commission, so there’ll be no hard sell, just a friendly chat with no obligation, or pressure, to take out a policy. (Aviva Advisers can talk generally about protecting what matters most, but they can only offer advice on a selection of Aviva’s protection products.) To arrange an informal chat, please contact Janet Warne on 07827 306977 or email janet.warne@aviva.co.uk. You can read Janet’s story of how Aviva helped her family when she was diagnosed with cancer at www. familiespennines.co.uk/family-life/work-and-money Find out more about Aviva Protects at www.aviva.co.uk/avivaprotects

Their new blog ‘TomTag Life Skill of the Month’ also offers practical advice on how to use TomTag to teach essential life skills. TomTag has become a firm favourite with children of all ages and abilities. Take a look at the range and find links to the blog at www.orkidideas.com.

People all over the UK will be hosting their own Coffee Morning and donations on the day go to Macmillan. Last year alone you raised £25 million for this great cause and they hope you can help them to raise even more in 2015. WORKING PARENTS

Are you a stay-at-home parent who’s looking to get back into work, a teacher who dreams of being a landscape gardener, or a lawyer who wants a move away from the legal world? Fiona Clark, from Inspired Mums career and confidence coaching, helps with some ideas to find your new career direction.

shutterstock

How to find your dream job now the kids are at school

Maybe you secretly know what you want to do, but haven’t plucked up the courage to go for it, or you just don’t want to continue in your current job or what you’ve done in the past. If you have been out of the workplace for a while, knee-deep in nappies, it’s all too easy to lose sight of what skills you have to offer. But being a parent allows you to develop and acquire a wide range of new skills.

REDISCOVER YOUR NATURAL SKILLS It’s easy to undervalue something which comes easily but you need to be proud of your skills and focus on how they can help you find your dream job. • Think about a typical week – with family, helping at school or when you do sport – and write down all the skills you use doing them. • List the skills you’ve used in previous jobs and life situations. • Choose five core skills you enjoy using most and would like to use in your future career, playing to your strengths so you can enjoy work. • How can you use those skills in different working environments – can your project management skills be used to set up your own business? So how can you come up with new ideas for a career? Try using different resources like social media and your network to stimulate your thoughts and generate new career ideas.

CAREER BRAINSTORM QUESTIONS Here are some thought-provoking questions to get you going…

How about working from home around your family?

BECOME A FRANCHISEE! Flexible working can be a solution for some. Part-time work is available though remuneration may not be great and the timing might not suit family life. A solution found by an increasing number of people is to run their own business and take control of their work hours, experience fun and satisfaction, win back lost commuting hours and earn an income. Parents looking for a new way to create a career and experience the financial rewards of being their own boss could find franchising a really good way of getting their own venture off the round with a ready-made business model and ongoing support. Franchises exist for all sorts of activities such as cleaning, food outlets – and publishing. Families Pennines Magazine is a franchise, one of 40 Families® magazines nationwide and part of a great brand that first launched in 1990 in south west London. The Families Pennines magazine and website franchise is now up for sale, as a going concern, by the current owner and Managing Editor, Rachel Bentley.

• What did you want to be or do when you were younger? What attracted you to it? • What would you do if you won the Lottery and could choose what to be or do? • What hobbies/interests do you have or would take up if you had more time? • What kinds of roles have attracted you on paper, even though you’ve never applied for them? • Who in your network has a job that fascinates you? What is that role? • If you could try someone else’s job for a day, what job would you choose? • What industry or organisation would you love to work in? In an ideal world, what would you like to do for them? • What type of people do you want to be interacting with or helping? • When you think about your favourite days in previous roles, what clues does that give to your future career? Fiona Clark is a qualified confidence and career coach who founded Inspired Mums to help women reach their full potential at work. Contact fiona@inspiredmums.co.uk.

6

Rachel says, “I have found running Families Pennines for the last 3 years a really great way to manage my own independent business whilst getting invaluable support from the Families® Head Office, and from other franchisees.” She continues, “As my own family is fast growing up, it is time for me to pass the business on as a going concern to one (or more!) people with local knowledge, preferably with younger children and definitely with self-motivation. Writing and building relationships with current and potential clients will form the core of the business and you will get support with skills training plus access to editorial and group sales generated centrally. And our Head Office has strategies planned which the new owners of Families Pennines will be able to access if they wish.” See page 3 for how to find out more about this rare and highly desirable business opportunity or call 07976 621496.

EDUCATION AND CHILDCARE

Been there, done that!

by Liat Hughes-Joshi

…Ten mistakes that parents make when they’re new to school life Marks and Spencer

1

Complaining to the teacher based on what your child told you happened…only it didn’t… Your child tells you X did Y, you march in demanding answers from the teacher, only to discover that what your little one reported wasn’t actually correct. Stay open-minded until you find out the facts.

2

Sweating the small stuff

Try to not get obsessed with reading levels or who got the hardest spellings and sums. As long as they’re enjoying school, and learning, that’s what matters most.

3

Getting embroiled in school gate competitiveness

Engaging with competitive parents is a lose-lose situation. If your child is ahead of their child, they’ll hate you for it. If their’s has one up on your’s, you’ll have to endure their smugness. Walk away or change the subject to something more interesting, like the weather.

4

Not helping at school…or doing so for the wrong reasons

8

Expecting your child to be pleased to see you at 3pm

With so much to learn, by home time many reception kids are exhausted. Postpone the after-school activities in favour of quiet time back home for the first few days. See our Clubs and Classes for practical ideas for age related activities.

9

Focusing on academic rather than practical skills before they start

Ask reception teachers what they’d like their new charges to be proficient at – and it won’t be about letters or numbers. Can your child dress and undress for PE, use the loo independently and recognise their name on their coat peg/ belongings?

10

Not naming absolutely anything of use or importance!

There’s a black hole in every school into which children’s belongings fall, never to be seen again. If you want to get lost uniform, pencil cases or shoes back, add their name to it all! Get 10% off from Labels4Kids: use the code ‘families’ at the checkout online at www. labels4kids.com/fam. Liat Hughes-Joshi is a parenting journalist and the author of four books including ‘New Old-fashioned Parenting’ and ‘How to Unplug Your Child’ (both published by Summersdale) and Raising Children: The Primary Years (Pearson).

Volunteering in the classroom or for the Parent Teacher Association will help you make friends and feel part of the school community.

5

Fretting about fall-outs

Reception children switch friends quicker than you can ask ‘who’s your best buddy now?’ It’s completely normal and bust-ups are quickly forgotten.

6

Tackling other parents about problems between the children

Even if your protective instincts kick in, don’t head over to give the other mum what for. She probably won’t agree that her child is to blame and parental fall-outs can endure long after the kids forget. Speak with the teacher instead.

7

Losing sight of the fact the teacher has 29 other pupils to look after

At ‘big school’, you won’t get the daily report you’re used to at nursery. Assume ‘no news is good news’.

If you’re dreading the return to school – or your children are – Steve & Judith, of NumberWorks’nWords, Huddersfield have some tips to make this challenging time of the year less stressful. 1 Re-establish the school year routine. Return your family to set meal, homework and bed times at least a few days ahead of term. 2 Ensure a smooth start by ensuring there’s a suitable place (quiet and tidy) for homework. Make sure there’s space for notes and study tools – help keep these organized to minimise time-wasting. 3 Talk to your children about their goals for the term. These may be academic (e.g. B or higher in every test) or behavioural (hand in all homework on time). 4 At the same time, establish a relationship with your child’s teachers. Inform them of your child’s goals and discuss any issues so they can be addressed before they turn into problems. 5 Steve & Judith have one further piece of advice: if you require expert help to make the return to school a better experience for both you and your child, give them a call. NumberWorks’nWords centres offer specialist, one-to-one maths tuition and English tuition to schoolaged students. They’ll tailor the lessons to suit each student and their goals – and make it “so much fun it doesn’t feel like learning”. Make sure your child starts the new academic year on the front foot and don’t wait until they’ve fallen behind and lost confidence. A positive start to the new school year can make the world of difference to what your child can achieve. For a free assessment and introductory lesson call 01484 487911 or visit www.numberworks.co.uk/huddersfield.

Hipperholme Grammar promotes individuality and self-esteem Hipperholme Grammar Junior School provides small classes, tailored support and a rounded education for pupils aged 3-10 years, helping each to be the best they can be. Its aim is to nurture and celebrate each child’s unique individuality. Mrs Sarah Weller, Headteacher of the Junior School, says, “Our goal is to equip every child with an unshakeable self-belief and life-skills that will see them flourish during their early years of education.”

The Senior School delivers an outstanding academic education and tailored extra-curricular activities for pupils aged 11-18 years, promoting self-esteem. “We enable every child to succeed by providing a rounded education, tailored learning support and excellent pastoral care along with a wide-range of extra-curricular activities,” says Headmaster Mr Jack Williams, who adds, “We aim to empower each child to achieve their career aspirations by embedding a tenacious and enterprising attitude that will last way beyond their years in education.” See page 10 for our open days special to find out more details of how to visit Hipperholme Grammar school.

Oldham Hulme Grammar School nurturing potential since 1611 With over 400 years of experience educating local children, Oldham Hulme Grammar School invites parents to take a look at what they offer today so you can start an exciting new chapter in your child’s education. Oldham Hulme Grammar School is an independent school for boys and girls aged 3-18. In the Nursery and in the Sixth Form education is fully co-educational, whilst in the Prep schools and in Years 7 to 11 the pupils are educated in single sex classes yet are able to mix socially outside the classroom.

EDUCATION AND CHILDCARE The pupils achieve excellent examination results at both A level and GCSE. In 2014 97% of pupils achieved at least 5 A*– C at GCSE and 30% of all pupils achieved in excess of 8 A*/A grades. 12 pupils gained 10 A*/A grades. At A level there was a 99% pass rate with 61% of students attaining A* to B grades and 11 students achieving A grades in at least 3 subjects. But academic excellence is only part of the story. The pastoral care and the support of the individual matter greatly to the school, which encourages all pupils to fulfil their potential in all areas of school life. They have a comprehensive extra-curricular programme from Astronomy to Zumba, and an extensive range of educational school visits from Aldwark to Zinkenbach!! To appreciate the school’s ethos and happy atmosphere, why not attend one of their open events (see page 10) or call the school to arrange a tour.

Run by specialist Francine Garnier, Brighouse Dyslexia Centre offers services including diagnostic dyslexia and dyscalculia assessments for children, college and university students and adults, exam access assessments for SAT’s, GCSE’s and A-Levels, assessments for DSA (Disabled Students Allowance) applications and adult and work based assessments. Francine says, “Parents can struggle to have their concerns recognised at school, which sometimes means that pupils’ difficulties are not picked up early enough, or expertise and resources in school may be hard to access. We provide a service to bridge this gap.” She continues, “We are sensitive to individual’s needs. Dyslexic difficulties can and should be addressed – dyslexia should not condemn pupils to low achievement.” For diagnosis, support and specialist dyslexia & dyscalculia private tuition contact Francine Garnier 07971 105743, www.brighousedyslexia.co.uk.

EDUCATION AND CHILDCARE

How do you choose a new school? How do you start the process of choosing a school for your child? You can access lots of information online about local schools, such as Ofsted or ISI reports and grades, you can talk to other parents at your primary school or nursery to see where they have sent their older children – but nothing beats getting a really good look round your shortlisted schools and, if possible, seeing them in action. And autumn is the most popular time for primary and secondary schools to open their doors to prospective pupils and their families.

Marks and Spencer

Admissions and applications Primary and secondary school admissions will depend on your local authority, so start with your borough’s website. They often list state school open events and will provide links to individual schools. They also are the go-to place for the requirements for applications including the closing dates.

Foundation or free schools, grammar schools, faith schools and academies may each have their own admission requirements, and Independent schools usually only offer a place following an entrance exam and possibly an interview. Application criteria and closing dates may be specific to each school, so check each one individually. USEFUL RESOURCES The School Checker at www.rightmove.co.uk is handy – just find a property in or near your postcode, look for the School Checker tab on the house details page, and you’ll find a map showing local schools with links to more information. Useful borough websites in our area for state school admissions: www.rochdale.gov.uk www.kirklees.gov.uk www.calderdale.gov.uk www.oldham.gov.uk www.tameside.gov.uk. Our table below has more information about independent schools, and also go to www.familiespennines.co.uk and choose out What’s On where you can search for school open events. Why not ask your school to email their open event dates to editor@familiespennines. co.uk so we can put them on our searchable listings free. Selected local Independent school open events: This table looks at open events for families with children moving into the primary or early secondary years – kindergarten, nursery and 6th form open event dates might be different, and entrance exams are normally on a different day too. Check details and especially times online with the school as these events may be morning, afternoon, evening or all day and please call the provider before setting out as things change which are beyond our control.

CLUBS & CLASSES Shutterstock

Put a smile on your child’s face with swimbabes lessons! An amazing photo – and this could be your baby or toddler too!

What do clubs and classes offer your child? • Mixing with children from other areas will widen their social circle • A chance to take part in activities not offered at school • A potential career • Teamwork skills • Increases confidence • Persistence and patience.

You need water confidence for both parent and child to get an image like this. And that is provided by specialist swimming lessons aimed at babies and toddlers and offered by Holmfirth-based swimbabes which provides lessons starting with babies of just 6 weeks of age (they recommend beginning lessons before your child is 18 months), graduating to Swimstars classes for kids up to 11. Classes take place in warm, handpicked pools all over Yorkshire and Lancashire with termly courses bookable in advance – including a swim kit for new swimbabes starters.

What age is best to start classes?

Too Much, Too Soon? Are we pushing our kids too far by signing them up to lots of activities – or offering valuable advantages? Parenting writer Sally J. Hall takes a look at clubs and classes. Kids need to have plenty going on to stop getting bored and parents are aware of the value of after-school clubs to ensure their children are stimulated. There’s no doubt a couple of well-chosen activities can be great for those pursuits that a school or nursery can’t cover.

Early years Babies and little ones get very tired so keep outside activities to a minimum. An art, singing or baby ballet-type class with the emphasis on play is great. Prep and Infant school Add a low-key activity – music, dancing, sports and swimming are ideal.

Swimbabes was founded in 2003 and now teaches over 2,000 children to swim each week. The business has developed into a group of companies offering baby and child oriented courses including Zenbabes for baby yoga and first aid courses, plus a fab shop in Holmfirth, where it all started.

Junior school As tests loom, add an educational class if your child is struggling with one subject.

Contact www.swimbabeslessons.co.uk, 01484 683570 or www.zenbabes.co.uk, 01484 689100.

Senior school It’s easier to add activities as energy and independence increases – and your child will be able to decide for themselves.

Free trial at Colne Valley Black Belt Academy

Play is important too With such a vast range on offer, it can be tempting to sign them up for a different activity every evening. Educational Psychologist Peter Gray wrote that we should allow children more time for play and that more time in the classroom can be detrimental, because kids’ “Judgement, wisdom and creative ability... come from life experiences,” he says. “For children, those experiences are embedded in play.” Check our Clubs and Classes section for suggestions, and see the directories at www.familiespennines.co.uk. Sally J. Hall is a parenting writer and editor. She is author of Eco Baby and contributing author to Watch My baby Grow (Dorling Kindersley).
