LITTLE LOCOMOTIVE’S LONG JOURNEY FROM WALES TO WEST YORKSHIRE Our local scenic, heritage railway, Kirklees Light Railway (KLR), has bought the historic steam locomotive Katie, to add to the existing engines at Clayton West near Huddersfield.

Birthday parties and day trips

Katie was built in 1956 for Dudley Zoo Railway. From the 60s to the 80s, a ride behind Katie was a must for thousands of holiday makers who visited the Welsh seaside resort of Fairbourne! From there the locomotive has resided in Wigan and Cleethorpes until 2001 when it moved to the Windmill Farm Railway in Lancashire for painstaking and loving restoration by Austin Moss.

Why not stay with us? We have a range of options – a manor house, holiday homes, a tented village and spacious campsites. Kayaking Canoeing Grass sledging Climbing Archery Crate challenge

KLR has some work to complete on Katie, but they hope to have the locomotive in operation in the not too distant future. Kirklees Light Railway – 01484 865727, www.kirkleeslightrailway.com.

NEWS New rules have completely changed the way parents can take time off after having a baby. Shared Parental Leave regulations give eligible parents across the UK flexibility to juggle childcare between them. After a compulsory two weeks off for the mother, parents can share up to 50 weeks of leave in the baby’s first year (or the first year of adoption). The law applies to same sex couples and those bringing up a child together, even if it’s from a previous relationship.

CHAOS OVER CHILDCARE SUPPORT? PARENTS LEFT IN THE DARK OVER NEW RULES

flickr, Oakley Originals

DAD’S IN CHARGE

Changes in child support has led to confusion among parents. The system has previously allowed working parents to be able to pay childminders with vouchers worth up to £243 per month. Parents could ‘buy’ these with their pre-tax salary. This has meant a saving of up to £930 per family.

The leave can be taken in blocks (up to three each) so you can alternate time off if one of you has a particularly busy time at work before resuming parental leave.

Families will be able to claim a ‘topup’ payment of 20p for each £1 they spend on childcare. In brief, single parents earning below £150,000 or couples earning less than £300,000 can claim. Families with one parent who stays at home are not eligible.

Finances will play an important part in the decision. While you can share up to 50 weeks, only 37 are paid. You will receive £139.58 per week or 90% of your average weekly earnings, whichever is lower.

How you split the leave is up to you. It will depend on who earns more, who feels their career will be least affected by taking time off, and who wants to be at home. Significantly, for the first time, dads can take all or most of the year off while mums return to work.

See more on www.gov.uk/government /topical-events/shared-parental-leave.

With parents having to work out the rules themselves, some may slip through the loop. The voucher system will remain but the Government has not confirmed if families will have to re-apply.

With thanks to Judy Yorke, journalist, mum and tutor.

MORE CHILDREN READING FOR PLEASURE

According to moneysavingexpert.com, even though the new scheme will be open to millions more people, some families will better off sticking with the current one so it’s vital to check it out urgently.

Children’s laureate, Malorie Blackman said she is ‘delighted’ at figures released by the National Literacy Trust that show that more UK schoolchildren are choosing to read in their spare time.

TO COO, OR NOT TO COO? A study has shown that mums are more likely to coo and use non-word based language with babies and dads are more likely to talk in ‘proper’ language. The research suggests that both approaches are good for your baby’s development and have a role to play in how babies learn language.

The Trust asked 32,000 eight to 18 year olds about their reading habits. 40% of the kids questioned thought reading was ‘cool’, while only 10% said they did not enjoy it.

A team at Washington State University recorded verbal exchanges between parents and their pre-school children and used speech recognition software to analyse results.

Learning will be the last thing on a child’s mind this summer holiday, but with research revealing that two thirds of children fall behind in their studies at this time of year, when they go back to school, many children are lacking in confidence and unable to recall things they learnt in the previous school year. Carey Ann Dodah, Head of Curriculum at Explore Learning says, ‘It’s surprising how much children’s academic ability slips over the summer holidays and it seems such a waste of all the time and effort they have put in over the previous year. EDUCATION AND CHILDCARE HEATHFIELD’S HANDY HOLIDAY HINTS FOR ACTIVE MINDS!

flickr, John Morgan

By Mr Anthony Wilkins, Head of Heathfield, Junior School to Rishworth. Keeping young minds active over the summer can be a headache, so here are some ideas to make sure those hard-won skills don’t wither too much in the sun. Creative writing arises from word-play Vocabulary – descriptive words and their alternatives. Comparisons – words that conjure images of greater size and put them in order. Funny similes, metaphors, proverbs and sayings. Word tennis – exchanging one word on a theme until one person can’t think of anything. Practice short pieces of writing so the skills are not forgotton Write short items – shopping lists, notes, scrapbook. Use fine motor skills – careful construction, colouring and painting of models. Postcards – create ‘serial stories’ a chapter per postcard. Diary – writing feelings and descriptions in a blog. Maths skills also suffer from being under used Adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing – shopping and using money. Maths vocabulary – get a good childrens Maths dictionary or try amathsdictionaryforkids.com. Patterns – looking at a wall, how many rectangles can you see? Advanced maths – ask a question which needs research and mathematical analysis.

Make sure they have a good rest too so they return to school with enthusiasm for learning, rather than worn out by having no break from study at all! Heathfield School, Rishworth, 01422 823564, www.heathfieldjunior.co.uk.

LEARNING BY STEALTH WITH NWNW’S STEVE STORM Is learning times tables repetitive and boring for your child (and you too)? With NumberWorks’nWords’ all that will change! We all know how important it is for children to learn their times tables. Future maths skills build on this knowledge and without it children will struggle later on as they progress to fractions, algebra and more complicated maths. The difficulty often lies with persuading children to do the practice. They would rather be entertained than faced with tedious school work. This is where Steve Storm comes in. He is the main character in the App and online game from NumberWorks’nWords. Children are engaged on an educational level without it seeming like homework. Steve Storm and the Tables of Doom was developed by the maths tuition experts at NumberWorks’nWords, and based on the company’s 30 years of success in transforming children’s relationships with learning. The big first day is almost here – reduce the chances of wobbles at the classroom door with our starting school tips. Ease them into a ‘school compatible’ routine If you’ve been enjoying lazy summer holiday mornings and later nights, head towards more of a routine a few days in advance to lessen the shock.

Pre-empt worries and highlight the positives Your child could be feeling anxious but unable to articulate their concerns. Ask them questions, provide reassurance and tell them it’s absolutely fine to talk to the teacher if they’re scared or sad. Read stories about school or recount tales of your own positive experiences. Remind them of the toys and activities they enjoyed at any settling-in visits. Swot up on the school run Make sure you know how long it might take to get there, where to park if you’ll drive and which door to pick up from, as well as drop off, if there are several. Keep farewells short but sweet A quick hug will be more reassuring than a ten minute goodbye – this makes it seem a bigger deal than just a few hours apart. For especially nervous little ones, it works well to provide a kiss on their hand to ‘keep’ in their pocket during the day. Skip the mascara but remember a tissue It’s normal for parents, not just kids, to feel emotional on day one. Try and hold back tears until you’re out of sight if possible so as not to worry your child. (But rest assured, if they do roll, you won’t be the only ones and we promise no-one will remember in years to come.) By Hannah Hunter Children of all ages are happy outdoors. Even hardened city-dwellers can revel in the natural world – once they’re used to the damp and mud! Many of today’s children are missing out. Stephanie Hilborne OBE, Chief Executive of The Wildlife Trusts, comments, ‘Children in 2015 are spending half as much time outdoors as they were a generation ago... society is starting to realise the risks that this separation from our natural environment poses to our children’s health and happiness.’

SUMMER

Summer Safety Tips Don’t let your social media posts encourage burglars this summer!

Swimbabes Summer Sun Safety

Local swimming tuition experts, swimbabes, also offer paediatric first aid classes for parents and carers. We asked them for handy hints to provide first aid for burns and top tips for keeping children safe around water.

Around 8 out of 10 burglars scour social media to find empty homes during the summer holidays, according to North East based home security company eSafes.co.uk.

BURNS

With more than 200,000 burglaries during the warmer months of 2014 in the UK (re: ukcrimestats.com), experts from eSafes have highlighted two possible reasons why, and provided Families readers with some useful summer security tips.

Burns are extremely painful and where they involve children it is always advised to seek medical attention. There are a few important points to remember when treating burns: Avoid burns – prevent sunburn by regularly reapplying high SPF sun cream and covering up and ensure everyone is hydrated with plenty of water. Keep children away from any fire for example fire pits, barbecues, lit candles.

Stephen Wylde, eSafes spokesman, says, ‘Firstly more people leave their windows and back doors open on sunny days which thieves take advantage of. Secondly, and most importantly, as people take their annual summer holidays, thieves are preying on the empty houses left behind.’

Cool it – all burns should be put under cool running water for a minimum of ten minutes – where the burn is due to chemicals (e.g. bleach) then this should be for a minimum of 20 minutes.

5 tips to keep your home safe during the summer holidays

Cool it – no this isn’t a misprint! The biggest mistake people make is not cooling the burn for long enough. Remember 10 minutes minimum under cool running water (can use a mixer tap with cold water and a little warm water as long as the burn area is being cooled). Cling film – dress the area in cling film which keeps the area airtight, is non-stick and can allow medical professionals to assess the burn easily. Don’t wrap the film too tightly in case of swelling.

NEVER apply butter, ointments, creams or oils as the heat from the burn then heats the oils and causes more damage. Though some ointments say they can be used on burns, don’t use them until medical attention has been sought. NEVER apply dry dressings, bandages, cotton wool or similar. NEVER burst blisters. NEVER remove clothing or jewellery unless it is safe to do so and it will not damage skin.

WATER SAFETY Never leave your child unattended by the pool even if they are wearing a floatation aid – floatation aids are not drown proof.

Terry Rich Australia

Pool toys can also mask what’s going on at the bottom of the pool so make sure you haven’t got so many toys that you are unable to see the bottom. Check the depth of the pool before allowing any child to jump in. For more information about all of the swimbabes courses held throughout Yorkshire including their unique swimming programme, plus their relaxed baby massage and yoga classes and NEW, their essential paediatric first aid course, see www.swimbabeslessons. co.uk or call 01484 683570.

flickr, Ewen Roberts

Burn dressings are non-stick and have a liquid formula and these can be used but only after the area is cooled for at least 10 minutes – if in doubt use cling film.

Don’t tell the world your home is empty. It can be tempting to post a selfie at the airport or on the beach to show your friends you’re on your holidays. However 78% of thieves use social media to find empty houses (re: mediabistro.com) so resist posting status updates like this to Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Make the house appear lived in. If you get newspapers or milk delivered then cancel them during your holiday as a buildup is just like erecting a sign that says ‘no one’s home’ which will attract burglars. Also if you’ve got timers for your lights then use these to make the house appear occupied. Enlist a neighbour or family member. One of the best deterrents is to ask your neighbour or a family member to come around and do every day things like move your post, put your bins out and park a car on your driveway. All these little things will put a burglar off who may have been monitoring your home. Lock all windows and doors. Locking the front and back door is something we all do but can you honestly say that you regularly lock your windows too? Around 25% of break-ins occur via a window so they need to be locked so dig out those little window keys and start to use them! Keep valuables in a safe place. It might surprise you to hear that 51% of people don’t keep their valuables somewhere secure (re: confused.com) with 13% still keeping items in a sock drawer – a burglars favourite place. If you have a safe make sure you use it to store all your valuables, keys, paperwork and cash.

TAKE A DIP When summer showers don’t allow you to get dry, get wet anyway and head to your local pool. There’s nothing better than swimming with mum or dad on a rainy day – the perfect opportunity to make swimming fun and get the whole family summer holiday ready. Take a look at the summer safety information from swimbabes on page 10. KEEP LEARNING ALIVE Six weeks is a long time to be out of the classroom. Keeping them occupied on a rainy day during the summer may give your child a head start once they’re back at their desk in September. Check out tuition companies which run holiday sessions or offer fun things to do online – see our Education section for some top ideas. CREATE A RAINY DAY JAR A chance to do those things you’ve not had the time for – bake a batch of biscuits, build that Lego or watch their latest dance routine. At busy times your child can write down an activity and pop it in your ‘Rainy Day Jar.’ As soon as you hear the words ‘it’s raining!’ you have ready-made activities to choose from.
