WELCOME

SILVER CELEBRATIONS! and

25th anniversary of Families

cloth-ears.co.uk

25th issue of Families Pennines

®

In 2015 we are celebrating a year of special anniversaries! This is the 25th issue of Families Pennines which is part of the Families® group started by Pascale and James Gravell 25 years ago this year. They began with the first Families magazine, Families South West, based in the bottom left hand corner of London, and the brand is franchised nationwide with almost 40 titles in the UK. Over the next few issues we will celebrate our’s and other organisation’s anniversary years too. And first, one that you may well be familiar with, the gorgeous book Guess How Much I Love You which is 20 years old this year. I like this quote from the author, Sam McBratney “The best thing about books like Guess, books which are very popular, is this: I know that somewhere in the world a mum or dad will reach for a copy of something I’ve written, and read it to the most precious thing they have in the world. That thought really pleases me.” The publisher, Walker Books, has 5 copies to give away to celebrate the anniversary of Guess. We’d like you and your ‘most precious thing’ to enter our competition with something representing the book – a drawing by your child perhaps or a photo of you and your child illustrating something from the story or a saying you use in your family to show how much you love each other. We will put the best ones into a free prize draw to win a book. So whilst we raise a glass or two to celebrate, join us too and sit down with a cuppa (or something stronger) and browse through our pages including news, education and childcare, clubs and classes plus activities to keep you and your family active this March and April including Mother’s Day and, of course, Easter.

NEWS Cycling in the Pennines – The Big Pedal and Tour De Yorkshire 2015

For schools unable to take part in the main challenge there is also a three day version, which can include cycling and scooting activities in the school day as well as on the journey to school. A superhero fundraising event is planned on the final day, Friday 20 March, where parents, staff and children are encouraged to dress up as their favourite superhero, decorate their bikes and scooters or buy the exclusive Big Pedal superhero wheelie transfers. All money raised for Sustrans will enable thousands of children to have an active, fun

CREDIT Welcome to Yorkshire

and sustainable school journey. If you are interested in your school taking part please contact Natalie.Whelan@sustrans.org.uk or see www.bigpedal.org.uk. The first ever Tour De Yorkshire will take place 1-3 May and the Pennines will be hosting stage 3, on a route that passes many of our schools and childcare providers. This provides local families with free access to a major sporting event and the chance to see some of the world’s greatest athletes up close. Lots of schools will be waving from the roadside or having special assemblies and topics to help them be part of the event and celebrations.

Huddersfield Juniors parkrun is a weekly free 2km timed run just for 4 to 14 year olds each Sunday (weather permitting) at 9am with Seniors scheduled on Saturdays. Taking place in Greenhead Park, Huddersfield HD1 4HS, the run is free but your child (or you if you want to take part in the Seniors parkrun) must register online with parkrun before your first run, print out the barcode that will be generated and then take it with you – you can even set up a reminder too! For more information on Juniors or Seniors parkrun events around the country see www.parkrun.org.uk and for Huddersfield Junior parkrun visit www. parkrun.org.uk/huddersfield-juniors.

As one of the biggest international cycle races in Europe in 2015 it is anticipated that, just as with the Grand Départ of the Tour de France last summer, the people of Yorkshire will get behind the event and have a fantastic weekend. See www.familiespennines.co.uk for links to a free education pack and other resources you might like your school to use and visit letour.yorkshire.com.

Huddersfield Juniors parkrun When Paul Sinton-Hewitt first started the Bushy Park Time Trial (which would later become Bushy parkrun) in 2004, little did he know that 10 years on there would be any other events in the UK, let alone events around the world. Open to everyone, parkrun organises free, weekly, 5km timed runs in pleasant parkland surroundings and people of every ability can take part – from those taking their first steps in running, Olympians and even juniors.

The Big Pedal is open to individual classes as well as whole schools. Each day of the challenge schools compete to see who can record the greatest number of pupils, staff and parents cycling or scooting to school. The school’s best 10 days will determine their final position, but they can log journeys on all 15 days if they wish.

This is a great time of year to get your school onto 2 wheels. Not only are we getting excited about the second major cycle race in under a year to whizz through our region, but the Big Pedal 2015 is underway too with the organisers, Sustrans, aiming for two million bicycle and scooter journeys between 2-20 March.

EDUCATION AND CHILDCARE Explore Learning

Bunny Hunt at Oldham Hulme Grammar School Kindergarten Wellies will be the ‘dress-code’ for the annual Bunny Hunt at The Kindergarten Site of Oldham Hulme Grammar School (OHGS) on Saturday 21 March from 10-11 am. The event provides an opportunity for potential OHGS nursery and reception 2015/16 starters to have a fun time at the school.

Free maths and English activities 14 April in Ashton under Lyne On 14 April, Explore Learning Ashton under Lyne will be hosting a day of free workshops for children aged 5-14 from the local community. Taking place during the Easter break the day will have a range of different fun themed learning activities to engage your child and give both you and them an idea of what learning with Explore could be like. Explore Learning Ashton under Lyne provides maths and English tuition to 5-14 year olds of all abilities. Based in Sainsbury’s, Explore fits easily around family life – open 7 days a week with children able to attend up to twice a week on a drop-in basis. Explore will tailor the tuition given to the needs of each child. Spaces are limited so call the local centre on 0161 300 6260 to reserve your place (or to book a free trial if you are not able to make the activity day) or visit www.explorelearning.co.uk. Childcare vouchers are accepted.

Mrs Carol Wilkinson, Deputy Principal of OHGS and in charge of the Prep School, says, “We conduct individual tours all the time to show our school in action to prospective parents and their children, but this open event is tailored to younger children to spend time with us in a fun way. Parents can relax whilst their child is occupied giving them a chance to ask our staff questions about the Kindergarten and the School and also chat to other parents too.” The event takes place in the nursery building and there will be collaging, biscuit decorating and carpet time with singing. Then it will be time to pop on the wellies for the Bunny Hunt in the school woodlands. “Day care centres provide fantastic preparation but we are a teaching nursery,” continues Mrs Wilkinson. “Even with our Bunny Hunt, we never miss an opportunity for learning,” The children will need to collect numbered Easter Bunny cutouts in return for an Easter treat! To book in please call the switchboard at the Kindergarten site on 0161 630 6255 and speak to Mrs Shaw. EDUCATION AND CHILDCARE Countdown to exams with NumberWorks’nWords, Huddersfield Local tuition experts at NumberWorks’nWords in Huddersfield are urging parents to act soon if they would like their Year 6 children to get extra help in getting ready for SATs this summer. By the time you are reading this it will be less than 10 school weeks to the Year 6 SATs which take place mid-May. NumberWorks’nWords offers a free assessment and then designs maths and English tuition around the child. Steve Uttley from NumberWorks’nWords, Huddersfield, says, “Even after SATs, children should’t take their foot off the ‘gas’. The summer term is often taken up with school trips and visits plus catching up with parts of the curriculum which have taken a back seat due to SATs preparation. Followed by the long summer holiday before starting a new school in Year 7 means that numeracy and literacy may well need additional work to prepare your child for their new school, especially considering that secondary schools re-test Year 7s on entry in order to determine sets for key subjects.” Speak to Steve to book your child’s free assessment on 01484 487 911.

New Headteacher for Hipperholme Grammar Junior School Hipperholme Grammar Junior School began 2015 with a new Headteacher, following the retirement of Mrs Louise Reynolds who had led the School for 6 years. The appointment of Mrs Sarah Weller, previously Head of Key Stage 2, heralds a new dawn for the local Independent Junior School, which is due to celebrate its 100 year anniversary.

Hipperholme Grammar has 2 open events planned for March: Open Morning Junior School Saturday 21 March 2015, 10am-12 noon Open Evening Senior School Thursday 12 March 2015, 6.30-8.30pm Photo shows HGJS Head Mrs Sarah Weller with Form 5 pupils Luchia Shaw and William Bentley. For admissions information contact Sue Oliver, Marketing Manager, Hipperholme Grammar School, 01422 202256, s.oliver@hgsf.org.uk or visit www.hgsf.org.uk.

Hebden Bridge Nursery rhymes to a funkier beat! Parents, staff and children at Crossley Mill Nursery have launched a fundraising CD, bringing a musical makeover to nursery rhymes. Developed by parent Shirle Janes – a singer herself – she wanted to share unfamiliar nursery songs with her daughter. “It occurred to me that if other parents needed it too, then we could raise money for the nursery at the same time,” says Shirle. The CD is available in Hebden Bridge from Spirals, Old Treehouse and Clean Green Nappy Machine or from Ebay or the nursery direct. Sound clips from the CD are available on the nursery’s website www. crossleymillnursery.org.uk. For more information contact Jessica Cracknell, nursery manager, on 01422 845820, manager@crossleymillnursery.org.uk.

Independent Schooling: Hogwarts or Tom Brown?

Speaking of her appointment, Mrs Hip l Weller says, “I am delighted to take up p er hoo holme r Sc a m G m a r the Headship after a long and happy teaching career at Hipperholme Grammar Junior School (HGJS). This is the beginning of a new chapter which I am excited to be part of. Education is a journey and using our initials, I have introduced a new School motto which I feel is significant of the approach here at HGJS: Here Great Journey’s Start!” Mrs Weller, who grew up in Brighouse, still lives in the town with her husband and two teenaged children. After leaving Brighouse Girls Grammar School, she gained a Bachelor of Arts degree from The University of Leeds, with her study of education and teaching practice taking place in and around Scarborough.

Families Pennines asked Mr Anthony Wilkins, Head of Heathfield School (the Junior School to Rishworth) as to how Independent Schools might, in fact, differ to the expectations we get from fiction. “Every year, thousands of parents and carers across the country have to make decisions about the schooling of their children. It may be that they are trying to find the right Nursery. It may be that they need a Primary School. Sometimes, choices get made but families are disappointed by the allocation of places. Independent Schools represent another possibility. “For some, the image of the independent School is quite daunting: Hogwarts at best, Tom Brown’s Schooldays at worst. Some might think of it as something of a ‘closed shop’, with multiple generations attending the same establishment – but, in fact, most families deciding to place their children in Independent Schools are now ‘first-time buyers’, and far from being stuck in the past, Independent Schools enjoy a freedom in the delivery of the curriculum which has made them amongst the most innovative of educational institutions. Independent Schools typically have relatively small class sizes, employ specialist teachers, encourage a range of extra-curricular activities and have excellent facilities. More importantly, such Schools are able to develop a particular, idiosyncratic character. In a world which can sometimes seem homogenised, our Independent Schools can offer very particular emphases: upon particular sports, or upon academic excellence, or outdoor pursuits... the possibilities are endless, and there will be a School which will be exactly the right fit for you.” www.rishworth-school.co.uk, 01422 823564/822217, admin@heathfieldjunior.co.uk

EXTRACT YOUR CHILD FROM SCREEN LIFE THIS EASTER

EASTER FUN AT LEEDS MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES An array of fantastic activities and events are guaranteed to keep all the family entertained this Easter at Leeds Museums and Galleries. Councillor Lucinda Yeadon says, “We have a brilliant activities programme and our nine fantastic sites are all taking part in the fun, which will include crafts, Easter egg hunts, special themed events, and the chance to learn new skills such as looming and weaving.”

The fun kicks-off at historic Thwaites Mills Watermill, hosting a Spring Festival on Sunday 5 April from 11am-4pm with a spring market, boat rides, face painting, a bouncy castle, children’s crafts and more.

Ever wondered how you might extract your child from screen life? Take a leaf out of this new book, 100 Family Adventures by the Meek Family, Tim, Kerry, Amy (10) and Ella (8). Tim Meek says, “The idea for 100 Family Adventures grew from wanting to spend more quality family time outdoors. We didn’t want our children to grow up preferring to spend their time indoors in front of TV or computer screens. We wanted them to be connected to nature as well as technology and to balance their screen time with plenty of green time.” The 100 adventures in this book are designed to encourage other families to get out and do things together. Activities are grouped into themes: Woodland, Water, Close to Home, Hills and Mountains, Exploring, By the Sea, Extreme Weather each with activities like holding a birthday party outdoors to scrambling up a stream with helpful and encouraging instructions, tips from Amy... and jokes from Ella!

‘Easter Eggstavaganza’, a family favourite, is at Temple Newsam House 3-19 April. Search for clues around the house and be in with a chance of winning an ‘eggcellent’ prize. More in our What’s On listings in this issue and online at www. familiespennines.co.uk and see all the 9 museums and galleries holding Easter events in Leeds at www.leeds.gov.uk/ museumsandgalleries.

As the Meeks say, “Adventure is out there – you just have to go and find it!” For a chance to win one of 3 books, we want you to tell us briefly about your best local outdoor adventure – please see www.familiespennines/win for how to enter including T&Cs. There’s a really special opportunity on Saturday 28 March to meet Tony Ross, illustrator of the Horrid Henry books too!

Tucked away in the beautiful Pennines village of Scholes just outside Holmfirth, Huddersfield, is Totties and The Olive Tree – the area’s most lovely garden centre and Bistro Cafe. Stunning scenery and the boutique style Bistro Cafe is a big pull for lunches and afternoon teas and this Mother’s Day is no exception. And the venue has a treat in store for children at Easter too. Mother’s Day bookings are now being taken for Brunch and Lunch served in the Olive Tree Bistro Cafe on Sunday 15 March from 10am to 3.30pm. Easter brings children’s activities from 3pm on 7 to 9 April and 14 to 16 April. This includes an Egg hunt where your little ones can ramble around Totties and discover hidden treats – but only if you get the clues right! Lambing season well under way, seek out the newest additions to Totties, due at Easter, and watch the lambs with their mums. If the weather doesn’t hold don’t worry, there’s plenty to keep the kids entertained indoors with themed craft activities. Once the children have finished playing you can all enjoy seasonal treats with an Easter Afternoon Tea served daily from 2.30pm (please book ahead) and kids meal and drink is available at just £7.95 per child.
