We also focus on Babies and Toddlers and have two competitions on offer. Take a look at our regular News, Education, Clubs and Classes plus What’s On sections – introducing our NEW! Don’t forget we only have room for a FRACTION of what is happening locally so we have our regularly updated online searchable What’s On events listing for you which you can link to via www.familiespennines.co.uk/whatson. This year marks three special ‘silver’ anniversaries for us. It is 25 years since Families was started in South West London and there are now 40 titles across the UK, it is 25 years since my husband and I were married (I was VERY young!!) and it sees the 25th issue of Families Pennines (March-April). The party room is also available for private cake demonstrations, hen parties and baby showers.

lights of our region’s tourism industry. To emerge as a runner-up in such a strong category is a fantastic achievement. “Winning Best Frozen Product in the Food Awards England and Wales on the same night was just brilliant and has given us another boost of confidence to go away and do what we do best – make delicious ice cream. We will be back next year to try and retain our title.” Yummy Yorkshire Ice Cream Company was established in April 2007 by Jeremy and Louise Holmes as a new addition to the family run P Holmes & Son dairy business at Delph House Farm in West Yorkshire. Visit www.yummyyorkshire.co.uk for further information.

Dial-a-Health-Visitor after dark Kirklees health visitors have launched a telephone help line offering parents advice between 5pm and 8pm. Set up by Locala Community Partnerships, which provides the Kirklees NHS health visiting service, the line gives families the chance to speak to a qualified health visitor after hours. The new service, for parents of children under five, is available Monday to Friday. Health visitors are there to support and advise families on issues including crying, feeding, teething and can arrange for their own health visitor to contact them the next day.

Little Cake Corner, 106 High Street, Lees, 0161 879 1309, www.littlecakecorner.co.uk.

Yorkshire Ice Cream Company triumphant at two awards ceremonies Artisan ice cream company Yummy Yorkshire finished 2014 by gaining recognition for its dairy ice cream and business at two awards ceremonies held on the same night. The Denby Dale based business was awarded ‘Best Frozen Product’ in The Food Awards England and Wales 2014, as well as being highly commended in the ‘Taste of Yorkshire’ category of the White Rose Awards held by Welcome to Yorkshire.

Rebecca Holley, one of Locala’s health visiting team leaders, says, “Often parents need reassurance and benefit from having someone who can advise and support them. This isn’t an emergency service though and we urge families to call 999 or 111 in an emergency.” If you live in Kirklees and would like to talk to a health visitor between 5pm and 8pm, please call 030 330 9588.

Special Offers at Family Run Benetton, Huddersfield The lovely new United Colors of Benetton store in Huddersfield will have seasonal offers running until mid to late January. The store focusses on children’s wear up to 12 and ladies fashion.

Speaking about the awards Jeremy Holmes, co-founder of Yummy Yorkshire says, “We are very proud of this recognition. The White Rose Awards are rigorously judged and celebrate the leading

The store is owned and operated by Helen Blakeman, a local parent of 2, who opened the shop at the end of March 2014, moving from a concession in Peter’s Department Store to its own premises in the former Beaumont’s Opticians shop on New Street. The store went through an extensive refit to Benetton’s highest specification, using local businesses and craftspeople to complete the work. Why not take a look this January and you just might find yourself a great deal into the bargain! United Colors of Benetton, New Street, Huddersfield HD1 2AR.

NEWS Free childcare to double

Vitality from Pharmaton We all know what it’s like to feel physically and mentally exhausted from a busy day at work or with the kids and coping with everything can be an everyday battle.

The number of 2 year olds eligible for free childcare is to double by the end of the winter with around 40% entitled to 15 hours of free early education per week, up from 20% last year.

Did you know that taking Pharmaton Vitality capsules helps to reduce temporary tiredness and to restore vitality when taken daily, and can be taken for a period of twelve weeks?

“Giving a helping hand to families that need it most will mean thousands more children get a brighter start in life,” says Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg. “All parents need to do to check if they qualify is contact their local authority or children’s centre.”

Pharmaton Vitality capsules are packed with vitamins, minerals and the unique Ginseng G115 that’s clinically proven to relieve fatigue and also aid mental and physical wellbeing. Pharmaton Vitality capsules are also supported by over 30 clinical trials and studies.

Childcare and Education Minister Sam Gyimah adds, “We know that good quality early education can make a huge difference in levelling the playing field and improving a child’s life chances. This free childcare entitlement gives children crucial support that could make all the difference to how well they do at school and beyond. I encourage parents who think their toddler may be eligible to check this and make sure they don’t miss out.”

Is it cow’s milk allergy? Is your baby crying excessively in its first few months? Are you concerned that something might be wrong? New research shows that persistent and unexplained crying can be a sign of cow’s milk allergy, an intolerance that is notoriously difficult to diagnose. A new campaign called ‘Is it Cow’s Milk Allergy?’ provides expert advice to help parents spot and understand the symptoms of CMA, which occurs when the immune system identifies a protein within the cow’s milk as harmful, and triggers an allergic reaction. Cow’s milk allergy can affect up to 7.5% of children under the age of one, and is the most common type of food allergy in young infants, yet it can be very difficult to diagnose as symptoms are often mistaken for other common conditions such as colic and eczema. Symptoms will also vary from baby to baby, and can be immediate or delayed, so it is important to know the signs and symptoms to look out for. Visit www.isitCowsMilkAllergy.co.uk for more information and to download a fact sheet, symptom diary and detailed questionnaire which you can complete and then discuss with your GP. The Allergy UK helpline is on 01322 619898.

EDUCATION Hipperholme Grammar holding free choral workshop for primary schools Following the tremendous success of Hipperholme Grammar School’s first Choral Workshop for Primary Schools in February 2014, the event will be held again this coming February. In collaboration with the Director of Music at Bradford Cathedral, the Choral Workshop for Primary Schools will be held at Hipperholme Grammar School (HGS) on Saturday, 7 February starting at 2pm. The Workshop is aimed at children in Years 3 – 5 who demonstrate a love of singing, and school children throughout the area have been invited to attend.

Heathfield Parents’ Week Last term Heathfield’s classes included some slightly more mature students than usual as family members visited to experience lessons themselves, taking on specific tasks with the class and subject teachers. The response to this new initiative has been extremely positive, even if it has brought back some scary memories for a few parents (and grandparents). One highlight was the Year 4 Science experiment, shooting cola and chewy mints 5 metres into the air. The family members were heard to say:

“Enjoyed every bit...” “Miss Robinson was truly inspirational...” “What a fabulous idea!”

The children will spend the afternoon at HGS with warm-ups, singing in rounds and in different languages, practising some choral pieces and learning techniques and what it is like to sing in a Cathedral Choir. The children will then have tea in the School Dining Room before travelling in coaches provided by HGS to Bradford Cathedral to perform for their parents, where they will be collected to return home.

“...an amazing experience…” “Very good way of fostering the partnership between school and home.”

There is no charge for children to take part but booking via HGS Marketing & Admissions Manager, Mrs Sue Oliver, is necessary. HGS is also holding open events in the Spring term as follows: Senior School Open Doors Morning: 15 January – 9.30am-12 noon Sixth Form Subject Information Evening: 12 February – 7-9pm Senior School Open Evening: 12 March – 6.30-8.30pm Junior School Open Morning: 21 March – 10am-12 noon.

“What a super day!” “All the children were so happy.”

Hipperholme Grammar School, 01422 202256, s.oliver@hgsf.org.uk, www.hgsf.org.uk.

“Pitched at a great pace for both kids and Dads!”

Oldham Hulme Grammar School January Entrance Exam for Year 7

“...very exciting... a lovely experience...”

Children in current Year 6 are invited to take the Oldham Hulme Grammar School (OHGS) entrance exam for Year 7 on Wednesday 14 January between 8.45am and 3.30pm.

“The atmosphere in and around the school is wonderful. Just another indication that Heathfield is a very special School where children area able to flourish in all areas.”

What can your child expect in the OHGS entrance examination? It consists of papers in English, mathematics and verbal reasoning and specimen papers in mathematics and English (but not in verbal reasoning) are available from the OHGS office. Candidates who meet certain requirements in the examination will be invited to attend an interview. The school also takes account of a child’s current school report and any special circumstances, for example, recent changes in school or health, when assessing candidates. When vacancies are available in Years 7 to 9, potential candidates for these vacancies are tested in English, mathematics and verbal reasoning and competence in a modern language and science may also be assessed. Please book with the school immediately for the 14 January entrance examination or if would like to find out more about the school, please contact the OHGS reception team who will be happy to organise a personal tour by telephoning 0161 624 4497.

5 It develops social skills – meeting others, listening, singing and dancing together, sharing.

Families Pennines asked Gaynor, a local parent, to tell us about her children’s experiences. Gaynor says, “A friend told me I should try Colne Valley Black Belt Academy to help raise the confidence of one of my children and find a challenging outlet for another. My friend has recommended at least 4 other families to go there – I think that says a lot about the Academy. I have never met an organisation that embraces the whole child and all their achievements like they do. It has been amazing for all of us. If you haven’t tried it for your children, I can’t recommend it enough.” Why not give it a go – take advantage of the free trial lesson with your family this New Year! BRINGING UP BABY

ON A BUDGET By Joanna Parry

Having a baby is a costly business, and it’s not unusual for parents to spend thousands of pounds on kit before their baby even arrives. But the truth is, babies need very little stuff and what they do need you can almost always borrow from friends or buy second-hand.

Some DOs (and a DON’T) for buying on a budget DO invest in some necessities before your baby arrives, but you DON’T need everything yet. Tell the world you’re pregnant you’ll be amazed at what hand-me-downs come your way. DO prepare a gift list, or (diplomatically) exchange unwanted gifts for something useful.

DO hit eBay with a vengeance. Baby clothes and equipment often come in bundles, which are far cheaper than bidding for individual items. DO buy new if there is a safety issue involved. You can buy almost everything second-hand and as most baby gear is used for such a short period of time, things will be in surprisingly good nick. Look out for NCT and baby table top sales, and if you live in a baby-centric area your local charity shop will be packed with prams, cots and highchairs. DO organise your own swapping event with your friends who have children. DO join recycling forum Freecycle or other swapping-buying-selling websites such as Nappy Valley or Gumtree. DO go budget if you must buy new. Budget brands have to pass the same safety tests as the expensive ones and are often made by the same companies. Look out for great value local retailers who know their clients and will offer the whole range. Many supermarkets sell stylish baby clothes at a great price, and Ikea has brilliant value nursery furniture. If you can’t live without the expensive brands pick one or two key items carefully – and check out the sale rail.

The gear you need SLEEPING Think about a cot-bed from the start or decorate a basic cot with baby friendly stencils to make it look like a designer one. While cots can be bought second-hand, current guidelines on preventing S.I.D.S. suggest that babies should sleep on new clean mattresses. Baby sleeping bags are great but pricey so buy them second-hand or from the supermarket. Many mums think baby monitors are unnecessary but if you do want one the £20 basic model is just as good as the all-singing, all-dancing variety.

OUT-AND-ABOUT Easily the most expensive piece of kit is a buggy, so look for decent models on a recycling site. Or go for a cheap one that folds up and is light-weight and some buggies will recline to allow a newborn to lie flat.

CARRYING Invest in a second-hand sling for as little as £10, or borrow one – an unbelievable number of mums buy slings brand new and never use them. Across the UK

BABIES & TODDLERS www.slingmeet.co.uk organises meet-ups for mums to test-drive different slings and locally the Huddersfield and Halifax sling library is a hub for local parents to try the options and hire their ideal sling – www.slinglibrary.com.

DRIVING Car seats CAN be bought second-hand but make sure you are confident that the seat has not been in an accident. Go for a convertible model that lasts from birth to 4 years (check for instructions for safe use if you are borrowing/purchasing second hand).

FEEDING AND CHANGING Apart from a pram, cot and car seat, babies need very little – nappies, a few babygrows (in neutral colours), a blanket, cardigan and

hat. Don’t buy any other baby clothes – you’ll receive enough gifts when they’re born. Save money by breastfeeding – bottlefeeding costs over £500 a year and that’s just the formula! Bottles can be sterilised without a machine and they can be warmed in a jug of hot water or consider getting your baby used to room-temperature feeds. You don’t need a highchair yet, and hopefully someone will lend you one by the time you do. Whichever side you’re on in the debate about green washable nappies, there’s no doubt they work out cheaper – as long as you don’t wash them at 90 degrees or tumble-dry. It can cost up to £1000 to keep a baby in disposable nappies until they

are potty-trained, whereas using reusable nappies costs only a few hundred pounds for baby number one and even less when siblings come along. HUDDERSFIELD AND HOLMFIRTH NANNIES Parents need access to all sorts of childcare so wouldn’t it be great to look at the Nanny option (including Maternity Nannies) without the headache of sorting out interviews, checks and employment requirements all by yourself. Step in Huddersfield and Holmfirth Nannies (H&H) which places Nannies, Maternity Nannies, Housekeeper-Nannies, Before and After School Nannies, Mother’s Help’s and Babysitters. Rachel Bradley, who owns and runs the agency, says, “I bring my many years of experience as a Nanny and maternity Nanny plus the invaluable insights that I’ve gained as a mother myself to the process of selecting nannies and other child care helpers that I offer for placement.” See www.huddersfieldandholmfirthnannies.co.uk or call 01484 645621.

KES SILVER JEWELLERY – TOP TIPS FOR TAKING BABY PRINTS Getting a good hand print from a baby is not easy. Babies tend to curl their hand up and keep them moving at all times. So we asked Huddersfield silver print jewellery craftswoman Kirsty Flerin of KES Silver Jewellery for her top tips for taking baby prints for making into her lovely silver jewellery: • It’s easiest to get a print when your baby is asleep, and when you have someone else to help! • Get the reactive paper (supplied in KES kits) ready, on a flat surface that you can move under the hand (e.g. supported on a magazine or book).

KES Silver Jewellery

• Press the fingers and thumb gently to make sure there is contact with the paper then lift off as cleanly as you can after a second or two.

• Foot prints are much easier and less wriggly. Again, sweep the wipe over the whole surface of the foot and press cleanly onto the paper for around a second or two. (Don’t worry about smudges as I tidy the images up using computer software.) • Cleaning the hand or foot with an ordinary wet wipe afterwards to make sure there is no staining to other surfaces. (I have heard one instance of the wipe reacting with paintwork, but they are non-toxic so are no risk to your baby.) Order in plenty of time for special occasions and this spring completed order forms and prints will need to be received at KES by 14 January for Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day is 15 March so completed order forms and prints will need to be at KES by 15 February. 07980625535, kessilver@hotmail.co.uk, www.kessilverjewellery.co.uk

NEW YEAR, NEW STARTS • wash dishes (with supervision) • wipe out bathroom sinks • match socks. This can easily be turned into a fun game! • fold simple clothes or tea towels • water indoor plants • feed pets Why not try rewarding younger children for doing their chores, at least when you first introduce them? For older children chores can become a normal part of their day.

AGES 6-8 All the above plus: • help prepare meals, wash vegetables, simple cutting • wipe counter tops and kitchen units • hang up laundry • sweep • vacuum • fold clothes • clean microwave • rake leaves As the chores get more complex and time-consuming, mix them up with simpler ones from the younger age groups so it doesn’t become too onerous.

AGES 9-11 Alena Ozerova_Fotolia.com

NEW YEAR FAMILY RESOLUTION:

CHORES FOR KIDS? Have a family plan for everyday household tasks and you will teach your kids a great life lesson, and there’s no better time to start a New Year Family Resolution. Here are some ideas from Families contributors. Chores help kids learn responsibility, and sharing chores gives you help around the house. Not sure your kids will go for it? Turn it into a game when they are young, a way to earn stars and later credits when they are older. (And since you ask, no, we don’t think children should get paid to help you around the house!)

TODDLER (AGES 2-3) • pick up/put away toys • unload the dishwasher, especially plastic cutlery, plastic cups and Tupperware • dust (little ones love a feather duster!) • collect dirty clothes and put them in the hamper • help move clothes from washer to dryer • put clothes away • make their bed • wipe down cupboards, cabinets and skirting boards with soapy water. This one can get messy but it’s lots of fun! At this age, it is more about ‘helping mum’ and having fun than chores!

PRESCHOOLER (AGES 4-5) All the above plus: • load the dishwasher • take out the recycling • lay the table • clear the table

12

All the above plus: • make simple meals • clean the loo (they’ll love this one!) • mop floors

AGES 12-14 All the above plus: • clean the bathroom • make full meals including a meal plan • clean out the fridge and freezer • mow the lawn • supervise younger children’s chores – a great time to get bossy themselves! Do take into account your own child’s maturity and capabilities when giving them chores. Some children may be able to tackle many more than others – and some will certainly complain more than others! Good luck! What do you think? Email editor@familiespennines.co.uk with your comments and ideas!

NEW YEAR, NEW YOU:

TIME TO BUILD YOUR CAREER Many of us wake up on January 1st feeling exhausted from Christmas, a little worse for wear from the night before and desperate for the kids to go back to school. But we also find ourselves scribbling lists of New Year’s resolutions – to get fit, lose weight, get stuck in to that pile of paperwork on the kitchen table and, often, to give our working lives a shake up too. The New Year is not just about detoxing our bodies – it can also be a time to detox our working lives. In fact, January is a fantastic time for those of us with children in nursery or full time education for the first time to go back to work, start a new venture, set up our own business or to re-train in something that will get us leaping out of bed every morning!

www.f amiliespennines.co.uk

NEW YEAR, NEW STARTS From a new job or a whole new career, the world is your oyster as a working parent. If your hours are limited by the school run then setting up your own business, perhaps taking up a franchise or network marketing opportunity can offer you the chance to do something you love whilst working flexible hours and the options are limitless.

Perhaps you can build on a hobby or use your own skills for example teaching a language or taking your full time work skills like accountancy or marketing to fill a niche in the market and work for yourself. Take a course, design websites, set up a blog, open a café – it’s up to you.

You can choose anything from network marketing such as retailing greeting cards and stationery to selling aloe products, running a franchise from teaching little ones dance to running your own Families magazine franchise (existing plus new franchises available all over the UK so please contact editor@familiespennines.co.uk for referral to our Head Office).

There are plenty of websites out there to help you get started to find a new job, re-train, choose the right business, give you ideas, advise you on tax and even help you design your logo, so there’s no excuse not to get stuck in this New Year. Take a look at www.gov.uk/starting-up-a-business. You can do it!
