WELCOME

Christmas seems to get earlier each year... though perhaps if we are going to put some thought into Christmas shopping then it is good to have plans in place. Rather than your Christmas being delivered in the back of a supermarket van, could this be the year you support your local producers, shops, attractions and events? Small Business Saturday is 6 December this year – an ideal date to get your shopping well underway. To help you and your family get festive, we have pages (and pages!) of information including where to find Santa and his friends and Christmas Shopping Locally. With our regular News, Education and Childcare, Clubs and Classes plus What’s On sections Families Pennines just about has it covered for busy parents and carers.

Wishing you a peaceful end to the year and happy start to the next – see you in 2015!

Grateful thanks to the businesses and organisations which support our magazine and keep it free to you – please support them too and mention you saw them in Families Pennines.

Customer satisfaction was an early lesson, “When a 6’ 6” lorry driver tells you his dinner is not what he ordered, you are very aware of making sure things are right.” Brian is the President of the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts which started the Chefs Adopt a School charity linking professional chefs with schools to teach children about food, its provenance, growing, healthy eating, nutrition, hygiene and cookery. There is a waiting list but schools can register via www.chefsadoptaschool.org.uk – and the charity is looking for chefs and food professionals to register themselves too. And what does a busy, talented Chef cook for himself when he gets back from a full day in the professional kitchen? “Welsh rarebit – Cheese on Toast!” Brian answered, with relish.... HELP LOCAL CHILDREN KEEP WARM THIS WINTER

NOVEMBER PLAY ZONE OFFER... AND LOOK AHEAD TO CHRISTMAS

Parents are being asked to support Uniform Exchange’s Winter Coat Appeal 2014 and help keep Kirklees children warm this winter.

As the cold, wet November weather draws in, you’ll be keen to find somewhere to entertain your little ones – indoors! Visit the Play Zone at the Zone, Huddersfield, on selected weekdays in November and pay only £2 for entry between 10am-2pm. The offer applies every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday throughout November 2014.

The Uniform Exchange was set up in 2011 by local mum Kate France, supported by like minded friends, to help parents in financial difficulty to provide a uniform for their children free of charge. Kate says, “Due to spiralling costs and other financial pressures many parents are not able to dress their children appropriately for winter weather. We desperately need donations of outgrown coats, winter boots or shoes and accessories like hats, gloves, scarves and tights.” Drop off points include all Kirklees Libraries and Children’s Centres and for more information on how to donate or volunteer see www.uniform-exchange.org.

The Zone is an ideal Christmas party venue for children’s groups like schools, clubs, Brownies, Cubs, Guides or Scouts. You can hire out the dance studio or play structure and turn it into your own private Christmas party. Call now to secure a date and start planning. Also see our Clubs and Classes and Christmas sections for more on the Zone. 01484 484134, reception@thezone.uk.com, www.thezonehct.com

Sadly, in the run up to Christmas, courts can fill with disputes such as where children will wake up on Christmas morning and where they will eat their Christmas dinner. Mediation provides an alternative route to reaching a child friendly agreement – to ease the burden on family courts, judges now insist that parents first try to resolve issues themselves and will not hear cases unless parents have first considered mediation. The process involves both parents meeting together with a trained mediator (after meeting separately first) who supports them in discussing what is best for the children and then in reaching an arrangement which suits everyone as closely as possible, not only for Christmas but in the future. For parents who cannot be together in the same room ‘shuttle mediation’ is a possibility, with the parties in different rooms. The Mediation process is helping many local families to reach swift and cost effective decisions regarding arrangements for children, reducing stress for children and parents alike and enabling families to experience a peaceful Christmas. Clive Masters is a family law practitioner and specialises in child related matters. Based at Fountain Street, Halifax, Wilkinson Woodward also has offices in Brighouse and Huddersfield. Things change so, to get the most up to date advice, including advice about mediation, contact Wilkinson Woodward on 01422 339 600 or visit www.wilkinsonwoodward.co.uk.

HIPPERHOLME GRAMMAR SCHOOL FEES CUT From September 2015, Hipperholme Grammar School is introducing a new fee structure, reducing the fees at the Senior School by an average of 10%. Fees will continue to include lunches, books, stationery and examination costs, to enable parents to plan their finances more easily. Headmaster Jack Williams said, “Hipperholme Grammar School offers a small school, family ethos, high standards and excellent provision. We are aware that many parents would like their sons and daughters to be able to come to our School. Our hope is that the new fee structure will now make that feasible for many more families. Our A-level results this summer show our pupils’ academic success, enabling them to leave our School as well qualified, rounded and confident young people.” The Hipperholme Grammar School Foundation is an Independent School providing outstanding education for 3 - 18 year olds. The Foundation offers Scholarships in Year 7, including Academic, Music, Choral and Sports as well as a generous Sixth Form Scholarship scheme, and applications are welcomed from all. HEATHFIELD YEAR 2s LEARN ABOUT THE GREAT FIRE OF LONDON With the onset of Bonfire Night, Heathfield School Year 2s have been looking at fire in a different way, trying to understand how the Great Fire of London of 1666 started and why it spread so quickly. They conducted an experiment with fire, wood and bricks in the Dingle (a wooded area in the wonderful Heathfield grounds) and concluded that the dry wooden structure of the buildings was partly responsible. They made replicas of the typical buildings found in one of the London streets and carried out the ultimate experiment – set the bakers shop in Pudding Lane on fire in the Heathfield fire pit! EDUCATION & CHILDCARE PARENTS RECOMMEND HUDDERSFIELD’S NUMBERWORKS’NWORDS After successful exam results this summer for students of NumberWorks’nWords (NWnW), Huddersfield, Families Pennines talked to 3 local parents about their children’s experiences with NWnW for Maths tuition. Louise’s son W found it hard to understand numeracy and keep motivated. Louise says, “W liked Steve, Judith and his main teacher, Nathan and really enjoyed going. They motivated him and gave him confidence, reinforcing what he had learnt at school. They run a tight ship – friendly, capable, bright and buzzy! Exactly what kids need. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend.” Dilbagh’s daughter N is a good student but needed extra help. Dilbagh says, “NWnW has a good reputation, is an established family venture and we liked the classroom environment – and the fact that N got a reliable, guaranteed session. We would definitely recommend NWnW to other parents.” Patricia’s daughter F went to NWnW from primary school through to Year 11 to get 1 to 1 attention her school couldn’t provide. NWnW personalised her tuition and gently encouraged F to reach her potential. Patricia says, “NWnW were absolutely fantastic, like part of the family. We would recommend NWnW – it was worth 100% of the investment our family made.” Call Steve Uttley of NumberWorks’nWords, Huddersfield, to find out more and to arrange a free assessment – 01484 487911.

TV CHEF OPENS NEW FACILITIES AT HUDDERSFIELD GRAMMAR SCHOOL Yorkshire chef Brian Turner CBE opened Huddersfield Grammar School’s new £4 million development, the St David’s Building, in October. The development provides new classrooms for Food Technology and Art, Pre-Prep, Senior School English and Modern Foreign Languages. Guided by the Headmaster, Mr Tim Hoyle, and accompanied by the Mayor and Mayoress of Kirklees, Brian Turner enjoyed a tour before officially opening the new buildings. The TV chef then entertained over 200 guests with an impressive cookery demonstration. Mr Hoyle says, “The atmosphere was one of enthusiasm and excitement when viewing the quality of the new facilities. Brian Turner brilliantly entertained us all and was delighted to see the wonderful new facility for teaching Food Technology. There remains work to be completed and we have plans for continuing development. The future for the school is bright and the opportunities for the children ever increasing.” Huddersfield Grammar School, 01484 424549, ggarside@huddersfield-grammar.co.uk, www.huddersfield-grammar.co.uk.

CHRISTMAS

SHOP LOCALLY THIS CHRISTMAS AND GIVE MORE THAN JUST PRESENTS Christmas is upon us once again, and unless you are amazingly prepared, there’s shopping to be done! The big retailers have been bombarding us for weeks, and you can rarely walk down the street or switch on the television without seeing adverts for this year’s Christmas must-haves.

ENJOYABLE SHOPPING But what about the things that the big businesses don’t offer? Often products and services small businesses can excel at providing – handmade goods and locally produced items, in-depth product knowledge and personalised advice, customer service, a friendly and enjoyable shopping experience.

SUPPORTING THE LOCAL ECONOMY Added to all of this, when you buy local you are making an important contribution to your community’s economy. Spending money with local businesses causes a ripple-effect, as those businesses in turn

spend locally, and on and on. A variety of research tells us that when £10 is spent in a local shop, between £16 and £50 goes back into the local economy, helping to improve local prosperity and create jobs. We must bear in mind that big brands support the local community by recruiting locally and many are actually run under licence or as a franchise by local families.

SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY Small Business Saturday UK is a grassroots, non-political, non-commercial campaign, which highlights small business success and encourages consumers to ‘shop local’ and support small businesses in their communities. The day itself takes place on the first shopping Saturday in December each year, but the campaign aims to have a lasting impact on small businesses. In 2014 Small Business Saturday UK will take place on Saturday December 6th. Will you shop local this Christmas and support the Pennines economy?
