babyballet founder Claire O’Connor has been handpicked to take part in a Channel 4 documentary being screened this December. The series, called ‘Big Ballet’, with former Royal Ballet Dancer Wayne Sleep, follows a troupe of plussize amateurs as they attempt to realise their ambition of performing in a ballet on stage with scenes from Swan Lake. The show challenges the idea that only super skinny dancers can perform ballet, something Claire has always felt passionate about. Wayne Sleep, producers and Claire hope it will prove weight, shape and size really don’t determine gracefulness and the ability to show emotion through dance. And it is thanks to her positive experience filming the series that Claire has decided to start ballet and tap classes for adults at the school from January 2014. To register your interest in the adult classes or any of the children’s classes in ballet, tap, modern, jazz, singing, break dancing or drama contact the friendly team on 01422 329471 or email halifax@babyballet.co.uk

NEWSdesk World cup coming home!

om an Sidebott y R ’s d l ie f s . Hudder ket academy ic r c s e h c n lau

The home of Rugby League, Huddersfield, is taking a major role in hosting the Rugby League World Cup 2013. On 2 November, local school children got together to celebrate the event at the John Smith’s Stadium in the town. Over 1000 children from Kirklees have been learning cheer-leading, street dance or the Haka and choirs have been practicing new songs so they can take part in the pre-match entertainment.

Yorkshire cricketer Ryan Sidebottom has launched an academy for young cricketers. Taking place initially in 3 locations, sessions will be split by age: 8-11 year olds and 11-15 year olds. Ryan says, “I hope my academy will give children a place where they can try cricket. That’s how it started for me. I went to Kirkburton Cricket Club and absolutely loved it.”

With matches played all over the North of England, France, Ireland and Wales - with semi finals at Wembley and the final at Old Trafford, Manchester – the event will attract teams and supporters from all over the world.

Ryan’s father, Arnie, who also played cricket for England, will be involved and Johnny Bairstow will do work on wicket keeping, with Jack Brookes and Liam Plunkett taking specialist bowling sessions. Ryan continues, “Success for me would be to see kids come along and develop a love of the game. And if some of those kids go on to get county honours, then I’d be absolutely delighted.”

Classes will take place in York, Leeds and Wakefield. www.ryansidebottomcricketacademy.co.uk

Work with local schools and groups has already taken place and players are promoting reading though the ‘Try Reading’ scheme. Children have been trying trying out primary rugby league with the help of the Huddersfield Giants Community Trust.

n Day at Every Day is an Ope ar School m Hipperholme Gram Finding the right school is one of the most important decisions a parent will make in their child’s life and there is no better way to gain a thorough understanding of a particular school than by visiting at every opportunity. Hipperholme Grammar School has a variety of opportunities to visit as well as an open invitation to new families. Open Evenings at the Senior School and the Open Morning at the Junior School are ideal opportunities to view the School’s facilities, meet the staff and talk to students from all year groups whilst enjoying displays and demonstrations in all departments. Alternatively, the Open Doors events are less formal and offer an insight into the School on a normal working day. Families are also encouraged to book an individual visit at a time to suit them during the normal School day. They can meet the Headteacher, discuss specific questions or issues and receive a guided tour by our students, tailored to their child’s specific age and interests. Sue Oliver, Hipperholme Grammar School’s Marketing & Admissions Manager, says ‘Whatever the age of your child, do come and talk to us. We offer seamless education from age 3 – 18 and we promise you a warm welcome.’ For more information contact 01422 202256 or info@hgsf.org.uk, visit www.hgsf.org.uk of follow on Twitter: @HipperholmeGS

The buildings are newly refurbished and there is an amazing new outdoor play area for Early Years Foundation Stage pupils. With just over 100 pupils, aged between 4 and 11, the school has a family atmosphere and along with academic achievements values the children’s personal development. Also, Scout Road Academy hosts the Caterpillar Club, a parent and toddler group, which runs every Monday morning 9am to12 noon. Principal: Mrs Anne Stamp (B.Ed. Prett y Pettiskirts

Christmas Unique - Children’s Clothing for Christmas Cassandra Cryer, a Brighouse mum, wanted to run a business round her family. This summer she found her ideal fit and took over Unique Children’s Clothes Boutique, a Facebook shop, selling an amazing variety of children’s clothing labels. Cassandra said, “Especially at party time, we think we’ve bought something cute from a major store only to find everyone else turns up in the same outfit! I provide an alternative, at reasonable prices but maintaining the quality.”

Angel’s Face frothy tutu pettiskirts are sure to be on every girl’s Christmas wish list this year. Their multi-layered skirts are perfect for the party season and come in dozens of different colours and prints. Sizes start from 0 to ‘never too old’ (perfect for girls who are still young at heart!) and are priced from £35. Presented in a luxurious vintage style striped hat box, they’re almost as much fun to open as they are to wear.

Unique are taking orders direct for tutus in lots of styles and colours. Take a look at their Facebook shop for more Christmas party and winter themed items. Bizzy Bitz - The 21st century toy! As see on BBC’s Dragon’s Den, Bizzy Bitz is a must for every family this Christmas. Invented in the UK by husband and wife team Alta and Rachel Fogel, Bizzy Bitz is the only toy in the world which uses basic shapes with simple ball-and-socket connections to create true models of absolutely anything and everything without the need for expensive custom made blocks or pieces. The inventors have worked with children over 20 years and they have developed the concept to be educational too, helping fine motor skills and problem solving techniques. “We have seen children as young as 3 making cars, necklaces and little people, yet Bizzy Bitz appeals to older children too as they can create more detailed models like lorries and planes.” Sets and boxes are available to suit different age groups and prices compare with other construction type products on the market. To shop or find out more see www.bizzy-bitz.com. For a chance to win a massive 850 piece set of Bizzy Bitz go to our website www.familiespennines.co.uk/win with links to enter online (and T&Cs).

There’s Nothing Like a Dame... ...Oh yes there is! She’s behind you! We join our hero on a long walk from Halifax to London this Panto season as The Victoria, with Imagine Theatre, presents the spectacular family Pantomime, Dick Whittington, this year. The cast includes Clare Waugh as Dick with the hugely popular star of stage and TV, local lad Neil Hurst, playing the hilarious Idle Jack. Joining the team as Panto Babes will be local children aged between 9 and 16 who were invited to audition (a bit like X-Factor!) earlier this autumn. And who can forget Richard Cheshire as Panto Dame, Sarah the Cook (pictured).

Pantos So how did the honoured role of Panto Dame evolve? Iain Lauchlan, Creative Director of Imagine Theatre and experienced Panto Dame explains, “The Panto Dame is not a man in drag – a true Panto Dame is always a man in a dress with over the top make-up and costumes unlike anything a real woman would wear – that is where the humour comes from.” Although the origins of Pantomime can be traced back to Commedia dell’arte, the Panto Dame is a very British institution and first appeared in its current form early in the 1800s. In 1820 the famous clown Joseph Grimaldi played the Baron’s wife in an early version of Cinderella. The role of the Dame evolved before really taking off at the end of the 19th century when the character of the Dame emerged in all her bawdy glory, and has remained largely unchanged since. So this year join in the fun and frolics with Dick Whittington at the Victoria Theatre in Halifax – and see for yourself just why the Dame is the heart and soul of the show. Dick Whittington runs from 14 December to 5 January at the Victoria Theatre, Halifax. To book or for further information contact 01422 351158 or see www.victoriatheatre.co.uk.
