Clubs & Classes N E W T E R M FO R C LU B S AND CLASSES Autumn. Schools start the new academic year and many clubs and classes enrol for the year too. It is a great way for your child to improve or learn a skill, develop friendships outside the playground (for you as well as your child) and simply provide a stimulating change to school and home environments.

Learn to dance with Twinkle and Teddy at babyballet!

Whilst some schools offer extra-curricular activities, and community organisations like Brownies or Cubs provide activities through volunteers, many parents want their children to have access to a specific type of activity to match a child’s talents, interests or needs, from sport, dance or drama to creativity, language or to help with special educational needs. It is really important to encourage your child to ‘stick at it’ so consider how you can make it a positive experience and how it is going to fit around other commitments in the family so the activity does not become a chore. Some further things to consider: • W ill you leave your child with the provider? • Do parents recommend it? • A re correct disclosures & checks in place, and a sufficient staff to child ratio? • Practice to do at home? Your involvement?

• Pay for upfront or as you go? • T ravelling to and from the activity – can you share with a friend? • A dditional costs such as exam fees, special clothing and equipment, trips to add in?

AND NOT FORGETTING YOU! As the kids go back to school (or pre-school) then take the opportunity to sign up for a class aimed at adults - a hobby, qualifications or health and fitness - make some time for yourself! Modern Education with Traditional Values Learn toGrammar dance with Oldham Hulme School

The Hipperholme Grammar School Foundation provides a unique, individual education for children aged 3 to 18. The site is split between the Junior School and the Senior School, where pupils are given individual attention to maximise their educational and personal development. The School prides itself on its warm and friendly environment, leading to excellent learning potential. Visitors often remark on the friendly, calm and purposeful atmosphere which characterises the School.

Twinkle and Teddy at babyballet!

Oldham Hulme Grammar School is an independent school for boys and girls aged 3-18. Its students achieve excellent examination results at A level and GCSE, consistently reaching a 100% pass rate at both levels and reflecting the long tradition of excellence. Strong pastoral care underpins the many and varied successes enjoyed by pupils and students are supported in small classes by well-qualified and dedicated teachers. Pupils develop as individuals in a caring and supportive environment, both socially and ethnically diverse. In the nursery and in the sixth form, education is fully co-educational, whilst in the prep schools and in years 7 to 11 the pupils are educated in single sex classes yet are able to mix socially outside of the classroom. Hulme has high academic standards but prides itself on being able to nurture and encourage children to fulfil their true potential. A wide ranging and comprehensive extracurricular programme sees pupils excel on the sports field, on stage and in the concert hall.

Jack Williams, Head Teacher, says, “Every child and student is guided on the path of personal enrichment and self-fulfilment. We work to ensure that all students leave us with a confident approach to life, an enquiring mind and a generous heart. I do hope that you will be able to visit us to see for yourself.”

The alumni show a rich mix of talent: Professor Brian Cox (physicist), John Stapleton (TV presenter), Nedum Onuoha (premiership footballer) and Nicola White (England and Great Britain Olympic hockey player), to name but a few.

Education The new school year will bring fresh challenges and hopefully your child is getting everything they need from their school. Some parents feel their child needs a little extra help to improve confidence or to prepare for 11 plus, SATs or entrance examinations. There are a variety of tuition options – here are some ideas and facts to keep in mind.

ks – Tuition Wor ing rn Explore Lea An independent study into the effects of Explore Learning membership has recently been published by The University of Reading. The study tested 1,539 Explore members and compared with a control group of children who did not attend Explore. Explore Learning members’ improvement in maths was 30% higher than that of the comparison group. Building confidence, overcoming shyness to put up their hand to ask for help, being more independent and less reluctant to try without assistance were all elements that parents recognised in their children and directly attributed to Explore Learning.

Tips for the new term By Steve Uttley, NumberWorks’n’Words, Huddersfield.

It can be an exciting time for your child as they move into Term 1 of a new school year. Here are some tips to help them get a really good start in their new class.

Tips for Term One Be encouraging and praise your child for the amount of effort they put into a project. This develops the idea that success is linked to effort, rather than talent alone. Make a real difference to your child’s learning by supporting them to do their homework. Taking an interest will help them to develop positive attitudes to learning, in and out of school. Have high expectations for your children. Believing in your child will give them the confidence to believe in themselves. Look for ways to support your child’s school. Volunteer a few hours a week in the classroom or speak to your child’s class about a hobby or an area of expertise you have. Research shows that children who are read to in their early years do better in school. Read to

your child for at least 20 minutes before bed each night and if your kids see you reading, they’re more likely to pick up the habit. If you have concerns from the previous year, do discuss them with the new teacher as soon as possible. We regularly meet parents who hold off, ‘waiting to see how things go’ and suddenly it’s Term 2 and their child has fallen into a really bad pattern. If you are considering tuition at NumberWorks’nWords we find it is better for your child to receive support now and start the year solidly, rather than try to play “catch-up”. Finally We hope that you and your child have made a positive start to the new school year. If however, you have any concerns whatsoever, please give us a call or send us an email. TIVE AUTUMN - AC HERE COMES REKA! IDEAS FROM EU Let’s face it, after surviving a six week school holiday (physically, mentally and financially) the change in seasons from summer to autumn brings a whole new range of fresh challenges for parents. And with the September return to school a challenge in its own right, there’s no wonder that many parents feel overwhelmed at the prospect of keeping children active and busy – especially at a time when the weather can be unpredictable, and evenings start drawing in.

Health Swap the road for the pavement during Beat the traffic and get out in the fresh air er. International Walk to School Month this Octob the UK join forces Each year, primary school children from across benefits of the ate celebr to ide worldw ies countr 40 with over part of (even g Walkin week. a once walking to school at least taking the car and the way) can be quicker and less stressful than with our children. provides the opportunity to spend quality time streets and the on cars fewer with quality air ses It also increa . strengthens communities www.livingstreets.org.uk

However, rather than retreat indoors to the ready-made comforts of TV and technology, at Eureka! we believe children should continue to enjoy outdoor play as much as possible – and get to experience the change in seasons. Last September, Eureka! attended The Natural Childhood Summit in London, organised by The National Trust in response to its Natural Childhood Inquiry which aimed to explore why and how new generations of children are growing up with little or no experience of the countryside or natural space around them. Stephen Moss, author, naturalist and former producer of BBC Springwatch (and also a keynote speaker at the conference) warned that UK children were losing contact with nature at a “dramatic” rate, with their health and education suffering as a result. “The natural world doesn’t come with an instruction leaflet, so it teaches you to use your creative imagination. When you build a den with your mates when you’re nine years old, you learn teamwork - you disagree with each other, you have arguments, you resolve them, you work together again - it’s like a teambuilding course, only you did it when you were nine.” So with autumn now upon us, we believe that the best way to keep children curious, enthralled and engaged with the world outside is to actively encourage them to embrace all the excitement of the changing seasons. Therefore, if you haven’t got them already, the best wardrobe investment for autumn winter 2013-14 must surely be a pair of wellies and a waterproof coat for each of your children, coupled with a dedicated commitment to getting out in the wild and exploring nature in all its elements. Even a simple walk in the park could provide the impetus for even greater outdoor adventures as the season unfolds. And while you’re there, safely encourage your children to act as nature detectives – collecting leaves, conkers, cones, twigs and tree bark – all to instil in them the simple (and free) pleasures of being outdoors. Alternatively, you could sit at home and do something similar on a PC, tablet or mobile phone – but the ultimate thrill must surely come from experiencing nature for what it is – the biggest free playground in the world. Eureka! The National Children’s Museum, is based in Halifax. See our What’s On Section for more about Eureka! this autumn or visit www.eureka.org.uk
