To maximize the amount of information in the digital file, use exposure compensation to shift the histogram, placing highlight values in the scene as high as you can on the histogram, without overexposing the highlights, i.e., expose to the right.

If you need to shift the histogram more than Exposure Compensation allows, go to Manual Exposure Mode.

The reflected meter reading can be adversely affected by many common scenes. Use EV compensation to correct the reflected meter reading in the following scenarios. Predominantly white or light-toned scenes such as snow, sand, or a white dress may require Exposure Compensation of 1 EV to 2 EV. Predominantly dark-toned scenes such as tuxedoes or spot-lit theater stages might need Exposure Compensation of 1 EV to 2 EV. Back-lit, top-lit, and side-lit subjects can use Exposure Compensation of 1 EV to 2 EV. Shadowed subjects against brighter backgrounds such as subjects with sunny backgrounds or a subject with a window in the background might need Exposure Compensation of 1 EV to 2 EV. Night photos with light sources in the picture such as street lights, neon signs, or headlights, or when shooting toward the sun could require Exposure Compensation of 1 EV to 2 EV.

Excessive Contrast What if all the pixels do not fit within the graph? In some situations, contrast will exceed the ability of the digital sensor to record detail from shadows through highlights. Excessive contrast cannot be corrected through Exposure Compensation alone. The contrast can be changed via the light or by altering tonal values. The only exposure options are expose for shadow detail and let the highlights “blow out or expose to retain highlight detail and let shadows go black. (See the section Contrast on page 61.) Excessive contrast can be corrected in the following ways: 1. Use flash to add light to the subject, bringing illumination and tonal values closer together, thereby reducing contrast, i.e., fill flash. 2. Use a reflector to add fill, reduce contrast. 3. Change the contrast response of the digital sensor by accessing the following adjustments in the Menu: Canon: Processing Parameters or Picture Style Nikon: Image Adjustments i. This is a way to expand or compress the histogram by changing the contrast setting. 45
