The media is keen to encourage a “catfight”, but the actress is sensibly saying no to a stale project, says Rachael Sigee By Rachael Sigee
There has to be someone to blame. And that person is Kim Cattrall.Because of her, we won’t get to see whether Carrie would get on board with polyamory, whether Miranda is tackling the gender pay gap or if Charlotte is helicopter-parenting her kids. Sex And The City 3 is not happening. Pour that cosmo down the sink – you won’t be needing it.Reportedly, everyone else involved is devastated. Not merely a bit miffed. According to media reports, her former co-stars are “heartbroken” and “forlorn”. The project has been “torpedoed” by Cattrall selfishly refusing to give fans what they want. With three-quarters of the gang signed on, Cattrall had to go and ruin the fun.Kristin Davis wrote a long Instagram post describing it as “deeply

frustrating” to have to say goodbye to Charlotte. Sarah Jessica Parker said, “It’s over,” and that she was “disappointed”. But headlines have ramped up the drama to full Mean Girls, labelling Cattrall a diva and playing up a feud between the stars. She has been called out for making demands that she would only agree to terms if Warner Bros produced other films she had in development. Cattrall’s version of events is rather simpler: she just didn’t want to do it.Tweeting on Friday, she said: “Woke 2 a @MailOnline [shit] storm! The only 'DEMAND' I ever made was that I didn't want to do a 3rd film....& that was back in 2016”. Is it possible that the true story isn’t about a megabitch intent on destroying a beloved franchise and sticking the knife in with her former colleagues, but simply a woman saying, “Thanks, but no thanks”?
“
Ultimately, it’s far easier to accept that a woman was a diva than accept she might have simply said no to something she did not want to do
We are forever hearing that women are steamrolled in the workplace. We are ignored, spoken over and belittled. So, how very Samantha of Cattrall to stand up for herself and opt out, despite the backlash from colleagues and fans. Because, ultimately, it’s far easier to accept that a woman was a diva than accept she might have simply said no to something she did not want to do. Easier to believe that there has been a catfight, that one woman has been vindictive, that Kristin Davis and SJP are cutting out pictures of Kim and sticking them in their Burn Book. Since SATC 2, Cattrall has enjoyed global success on the stage, starring in Noël Coward’s Private Lives, Tennessee Williams’ Sweet Bird Of Youth and Antony And Cleopatra, as well as heading up Channel 4’s acclaimed adaptation of William Boyd’s Any Human Heart. She has spoken openly about challenging Hollywood ageism and her battle with insomnia. Perhaps she is just reluctant to return after the debacle of the second film, which met with a frosty critical reception after the plot sent New York’s

finest on a trip to Abu Dhabi with all the subtlety of Kendall Jenner ending racism with a Pepsi. Cattrall has previously suggested that the concept might not chime with today’s state of current affairs: “To have four women talking about shopping trips and spending $400 on shoes when people are having trouble putting food on the table? It doesn’t mean we don’t need that, but I think the pendulum swung in a different direction.” After all, who would want to draw attention to a production that earned a 16 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, was variously called “racist”, “woman-hating”, “retrograde” and “insulting” by critics, and won the four leads a shared Razzie for Worst Actress? But perhaps the characters aren’t entirely dead for ever. After all, in the real world, “Samantha” took no bullshit, “Charlotte” posted soppy message to Instagram, “Carrie” dramatically dropped the bombshell while looking fabulous at the New York City Ballet and “Miranda” was too busy doing something more important to get involved. Anyway, presumably the people who are really “heartbroken” are the movie execs – SATC 2 might have been a mess, but it made $288m worldwide.
