the school complex is planned at the end of the mega-structure as a facility to support the residential area after the expo. This complex comprises of a kindergarten, a primary school and a middle school. Inspired by the scheme of master plan, my school design attempts to adopt the mega-structure as a baseline for design. However, my structure does not stay within the mega-structure nor does not completely replicate it. The design aims to extend beyond the constraint and deconstruct the mega-structure. This complex includes four major elements which are allocated not only within the mega-structure but also beyond it vertically and horizontally. The kindergarten stays separated from other elements and surrounded by gardens at the ground level. The classrooms for primary and middle schools are mostly allocated in the mega-structure; however, some classrooms attempt to reach out of the rigid constraint. The tower contains shared facilities for the whole complex, which creates a vertical expansion of the structure. Public facilities belongs to the fourth element, which comprises of indoor and outdoor sport facilities and green houses for agricultural learning. All these elements are firmly connected and interacted with each other, which helps create a friendly and innovative studying environment. Also inspired by the theme of Expo Milan 2015 ‘Feeding the planet. Energy for life’, the school design employs innovative and environmental techniques in design to enhance the building performance, human comfort and also environmental impacts. As an educational

nstitute of development study A plan to construct a building for Ho Chi Minh City ‘s Institute of Development Study has been committed by the city council. This research institute comprises of three main departments: urban planning, economics and sociology. These three departments used to be three separated institutes which were consolidated into one integrated research centre in 2008. Therefore, designing a general building complex for the whole institute is urgent to meet the real demand of development.

final concept design The design concept bases on the perception of the institute’s function in association with the real context and the local weather condition. The initial concept form is a basic geometry, then it is transformed, divided, separated and attached partially again. The basis for this process is the local weather condition such as sun path and main wind directions, as well as the arrangement of spaces required by the building typology. The form is improved in consideration for further design development; as a result, integrated design process is applied at a very first stage of thinking and designing.

TESTING ILLUMINATION WITH ECOTECT Based on Vietnam’s standards for indoor illumination, the recommended level for office space is 300 to 500 lux. With this information and the model simulation and calculation, an appropriate design for louver system can be approached. Besides, a relevant layout for office can also be obtained to optimize human visual comforts in term of daylight.

A steel structure is advantageous for this architectural design. Steel works well in both compression and tension conditions, so it will help to solve the structural problem in this project which is bigger structure at the top of the building than the bottom resulting in bending forces occurring in slanted columns and walls. Besides, composite flooring solution is employed to reduce weight of the whole structure and give permission for great spans as required by architectural design.

This science centre is a complex structure including office space, research centre, exhibition, housing for experts and service infrastructure, etc. This can be considered as a centre of technology and science of the city and the whole region. The special factor of this project is the main street getting through the structure, dividing it into two parts; therefore, the connection between these two parts is the key factor of this project.
