Our Legacy & Artful Inspiration
Originally erected in 1916 as the J.B. Mosby & Co. Dry Goods Store, this Italian Renaissance-designed building now houses Quirk Hotel Richmond, a captivating blend of art, history, and playfulness, brimming with natural light and charm.
Founded by Katie and Ted Ukrop in 2005, Quirk Gallery embraced the city's creative spirit, providing a unique space for local and regional artists to shine This same desire to ignite curiosity led to the creation of Quirk Hotel in 2015 Here, art and history intertwine, captivating both locals and guests, and inviting them to embrace the magic of the present moment
Quirk Hotel is recognizably one of Richmond’s most unique architectural gems. The building was an upscale department store, purposefully built to showcase beautiful displays and epitomize the height of retail in 1917. The legacy of the hotel’s original character speaks to the design-forward approach in every area of the property.
The expansive first floor, home to the Lobby Bar restaurant and Quirk Coffee Bar, embraces the originally preserved architecture, including the segmental arches, vaulted ceilings, unique entries, expansive windows, and ornamental ironwork staircase on the main floor.
Throughout, the hotel strives to pay homage to the original beauty of the building while curating artful delight Each guestroom, for example, has been outfitted with custom bed frames crafted from 100-year-old Virginia walnut beams that were taken out of the original structure and repurposed during construction The intentionality of each room is not merely present in the furniture, but it also extends to the thoughtfulness of the artwork within each space Select rooms even feature largescale mural installations
At Quirk Richmond, we ’ ve worked to embrace the legacy of our space and the location of our hotel while creating an artful environment for today’s discerning guest. Echoing the words of Junius B. Mosby, the original owner in 1917, it “is a distinctly Richmond product from its conception to its completion.”

Teapots (2015), Sean Donlon
Sean Donlon’s handblown glass teapots in the private dining room of the Lobby Bar reinterprets the traditional Southern tea service These whimsical pieces, commissioned by Quirk Hotel, encourage a modern look at familiar hospitality symbols Donlon remarks on the ritual significance of tea across cultures, suggesting these teapots remind us to pause, reflect, and appreciate the simplicity and joy of a shared cup of tea.
First Song (For Eleanor), Richard Carlyon
Richard Carlyon (1930–2006) was a celebrated Richmond artist and longtime VCU professor, honored for both his teaching and his wideranging creative practice Over five decades, his work appeared in major solo and group exhibitions, and today it resides in collections at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the Taubman Museum, and Longwood Center for the Visual Arts
Elizabeth Graeber Murals
Elizabeth Graeber is an artist and illustrator working in Baltimore, MD Primarily working in ink, gouache paint and watercolor, she creates drawings for books, magazines, shops and personal commissions. Elizabeth has drawn for a variety of companies including Warby Parker, Alice and Olivia, Washington Post and her favorite hotel, The Quirk
Cat Baby (2015), Sarah Hand
Commissioned for the hotel’s public spaces and elevator vestibules on each floor, Sarah Hand’s papier-mâché portraits draw from the building’s communal life, offering a playful homage to its daily characters These pieces echo the Ukrop family’s aim for a space that mirrors the warmth and uniqueness of a home, filled with personal touches and a sense of belonging
