itch Albom, author of “Tuesdays with Morrie,” among other bestsellers, spoke at Undergraduate Commencement this May, when 1,333 graduates received degrees. At the graduate ceremony the week before, 600 degree candidates heard Marna Borgstrom, CEO and president of Yale-New Haven Hospital. Later that day, the School of Law graduated 135 after a speech by Flemming Norcott Jr., Connecticut Supreme Court Justice. All of these speakers received honorary degrees.

hree finance students won three of the top spots recently at the prestigious 2011 CME Group Commodity Trading Challenge in New York City. The annual competition features students from colleges and universities across the country competing in a fastpaced electronic and open outcry trading competition. This year more than 100 students from 58 schools competed at the New York Mercantile Exchange. The winning students were juniors Christopher Gambella, who took first place and won $1,000; Francesco Compagnino, who took second place and won $750; and Kyle Lewis, who placed sixth and won $100. Eric Belgard ’11 and senior Egidio Carlino also competed. Gambella, the overall winner, also was offered a summer internship on the floor of the NYMEX. Ted Koly ’07, MBA ’08, a financial adviser and portfolio manager with Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, coached the team, assisted by Sean Reid, associate professor of finance. Thomas Coe, associate professor of finance and department chair, served as faculty adviser. “Ted Koly has been a great help and supporter of our work this semester,” Gambella said.
