“Serving as QU's president, as I have said before, is the greatest honor and the greatest opportunity I have ever been given. I believe our very best days as a community are still to come.”

A

s we approach the 160th year for Quincy University, I am honored to join the QU family as your 24th president. It’s been easy for me to fall in love with

QU, given our deserved reputation for academic excellence and our warm and caring campus community. This issue of QUniverse celebrates the many successes of our university as we begin a new academic year. Our students, faculty, staff, and alumni continue to dream boldly, to dare greatly, and to work for the transformation of the world. On the cover, members of the class of 2019 walk through our storied kiosk on Penny Lane, just after the commencement ceremony where they heard from U.S. Cellular CFO and QU alumnus Steve Campbell. Our student spotlight features sophomore Alsadiq Hasan who recently became a U.S. citizen. This is a heartwarming story of living the American dream. From the launch of our new QU Lacrosse Program to the successes of Josh Rabe and the QU Baseball team, many exciting things are happening in intercollegiate athletics at QU.

Glen Mandeville ’84 is fulfilling the QU service mission by helping the world’s most vulnerable populations. Closer to home, Dr. Len Biallas put the wraps on his 53-year teaching career with a final lecture this past spring. The Stations of the Cross at North Campus have been redesigned, thanks to the support of generous donors. Our new Stations will be a source of devotion and an object of contemplation for many years to come. This issue would not be complete without a retrospective on the legacy of President Emeritus Phil Conover. I thank Phil for his leadership and commitment to Quincy University over the years and I am glad he will still serve as a trusted advisor. I am excited to meet with QU alumni and friends in the months and years ahead, and I am thrilled to become a part of this community. Today and every day is a great day to be a Hawk! Sincerely,

Brian McGee, PhD President

asan was born in Baghdad, Iraq and lived there with his family until they fled war-torn Iraq to live in Syria in 2006. Hasan was only a first-grader when his family moved. The next few years were not easy on the family. In 2012 they were forced to make a critical decision as violence in Syria surged due to the presence of ISIS.

“We asked ourselves, should we die here or go home to die?” said Hasan. However, providence was on their side. Shortly after the family returned to Iraq, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees contacted them. In 2007, Hasan's parents had applied to the U.N. for relocation out of the Middle East. After a six-year-long wait, they finally were approved. They arrived in the United States in 2013 and settled in St. Louis, Mo. For the past few years, Hasan and his family have learned the language, acclimated to the culture, and established a new life. Within the first months living in St. Louis, the family found housing, work, and the children enrolled in school. They learned where to shop and how to adjust American ingredients to make family favorites. Meanwhile, they anxiously awaited the time they could apply for citizenship. Starting high school is difficult for many students, but Hasan faced a unique set of hurdles. The school system is very different in the Middle East. Hasan found that he was learning for the first time what his peers learned in elementary school. To compound the struggle, he was learning how to speak English.

HASAN HAD MUCH TO LEARN, BUT ONE PLACE HE FELT AT HOME WAS THE SOCCER FIELD.

asan started the school year as “the new Arabic kid,” but finished the season as the kid who played soccer and scored a lot of goals. Not only did soccer help Hasan through high school, but it also brought him to Quincy University.

“Alsadiq possesses strong character and overcame a challenging childhood. He is blessed to have strong family support,” said Mike Carpenter, head soccer coach. “I'm very excited about his development so far at Quincy University and expect him to be an important part of our men's soccer team's future success.”

WHILE STARTING HIS FRESHMAN YEAR AT QUINCY UNIVERSITY, HASAN APPLIED FOR U.S. CITIZENSHIP. “I’ve been living here, going to school, playing soccer,” said Hasan “I want to be able to travel, vote, and officially be part of this country.” Ninety days before their five-year anniversary, Hasan and his parents applied for U.S. citizenship. Their application was approved, and they each took the 100 question citizenship test. Hasan, along with his parents, received a passing grade and a ceremony date. Hasan was sworn in as a U.S. citizen on Friday, April 12, 2019, at the Thomas F. Eagleton United States Courthouse in St. Louis Mo. Hasan has faced many challenges in his young life. He has persevered through difficult circumstances and faced each hurdle with courage and determination. “I guess I would tell fellow students to stay out of trouble. Stay focused. Choose right over wrong,” said Hasan. “In the end, it's all about your decisions.”

degree recipients and the 30 master’s grads recognize that firm and final answers to that one may not be possible and aren't essential for survival and success. The graduates are ready for the opportunities and obstacles of the "great unknown."

As the music faded and the celebration drew to a close on May 11, 2019, the big question took center stage:

Fr. Bill Spencer, OFM, director of campus ministry, gave a moving invocation. After calling the audience on Mother’s Day weekend to reverence for “the women who loved these graduates into life,” he encouraged the students to live the Franciscan values of hospitality, service, respect, and stewardship for the earth.

Student spokesman Ernest Baker reminded the class that uncertainty is not new to them and that the unknown can hold the testing moments that produce unexpected achievements. Reflecting on a career marked by leadership accomplishments in residential life, admissions, music, and student government, the founder of QU’s Black Student Union admitted that, “There’s no way I could’ve imagined doing these things back when I was eighteen.” He concluded with the words of Matthew 6:34: “So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself.” Faith and friendship Baker affirmed, remain the best resources for confronting whatever the future may hold. QU | Main Feature More dangerous than the uncertainties we already recognize, these are the ones that can derail careers and lives. Extolling the strengths of a Quincy University education, Campbell added a note of caution. “However, such knowledge and skills are just the foundation for the aggregate wisdom that you will need to succeed in career and life. "

“FOR MANY PEOPLE, WISDOM COMES ONLY OVER A LONG PERIOD OF TIME. THAT’S CERTAINLY TRUE FOR ME. THE GREAT HEAVYWEIGHT BOXING CHAMPION AND PHILOSOPHER, MIKE TYSON, ONCE SAID: ‘EVERYONE HAS A PLAN UNTIL THEY GET PUNCHED IN THE FACE.’” –Steve Campbell ’73 COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER, STEVE CAMPBELL (’73), executive vice president

and CFO of U.S. Cellular, shared with the students his own sense of confusion as an undergraduate and the courage it takes to revise a life plan. Campbell has served as U.S. Cellular’s executive vice president — finance, chief financial officer and treasurer, since 2007. “As a student, I walked many of the same paths – literally and figuratively – that you have walked here at QU. And I have walked many of the same paths that you will walk in the future,” Campbell noted. “Accordingly, what I will offer you today is a report from my long journey into the world beyond 18th Street and College Avenue that you are about to enter.” He quoted former U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, who famously said, “There are unknown unknowns…things we don’t know we don’t know.”

n Campbell’s case, that metaphorical punch led to a change in his academic major, which taught him the value of using an unwelcome surprise to craft a more sustainable plan. In the first of his six guidelines for the graduates, he debunked the cliché that following personal passions build careers. “Be open to new opportunities and whatever you choose to do in life, work hard at it and be good at it. Throughout my business career, I have consistently seen that hard work and persistence beat talent that doesn’t work hard.” He observed that even hard work is no guarantee against difficulty and loss. “Adversity is part of most everyone’s life, and I want you to be prepared to reach down deep and find the inner fortitude that you’ll need to deal with it. How you handle life’s disappointments, and occasional setbacks will be key.” Campbell urged students to stay hungry for knowledge and new skills, actively seeking new pathways. “There is always something to learn to better yourself,” he stated, “and there are so many ways to do it.”

ELLL'S CTICAL STIONS: QUniverse | Fall 2019

He reminded the graduates to enrich their careers and service with joy and human connection. “Whatever path in life you choose, remember that relationships pave the path," he said. “Remember, too, that life is supposed to be fun! Another great philosopher, Ferris Bueller, said on his day off: ‘Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.’” Campbell’s last piece of advice tied all the rest together: “Remember that how you get things done is just as important as getting them done at all. In every aspect of your life, do what you know is right.” This ideal of integrity stands at the heart of the QU Mission Statement. Campbell issued a final challenge in words of support and camaraderie. “As you leave QU, I encourage you to go with the knowledge and the confidence that, no matter what lies ahead for you, what you have learned here has prepared you well to compete with anybody, anywhere, prepared you well to have a successful professional career and life, and prepared you well to change the world for the better.”

Q&A with Brian McGee, PhD Quincy University’s 24th president

10

QUniverse | Fall 2019

Main Feature | QU

Q Who were the mentors who inspired you Q What do you think and what did you admire most about them?

are QU’s strengths?

I’ve had many, not all of whom realized how much they taught me. They’ve been professors and academic leaders, musicians and coaches, priests and other religious, college presidents. They’ve taught me how to solve difficult problems, shown me how to treat all people with dignity and respect, and demonstrated how to ask questions before making decisions. There is much I admire about these mentors and leaders, but one common attribute for them has been their commitment to kindness and compassion, even when hard choices have to be made. I am grateful to have had so many good mentors, and I want every QU student to have the same opportunity to have outstanding role models.

We have many strengths. Initially, we have distinguished alumni, committed faculty and staff, and enthusiastic students. We have a great history and mission. We have a city that supports us and provides great learning opportunities for our students.

A

Q What excites you most about leading a Catholic university?

A

To return to Catholic higher education, for me, is a calling. I will get to live out my Catholic faith in my chosen vocation. And, at QU, I do so in the transformative and powerful tradition of St. Francis of Assisi, a tradition that provides the most beautiful and eloquent account of Christianity I have ever seen. Catholic universities have been a continuous, powerful force for good around the world and across the centuries. Catholic universities have displaced ignorance and disease by creating and disseminating new knowledge to every continent and country. They have served students and uplifted communities that otherwise would have been forgotten. They have prepared generations of new religious, business, and political leaders for principled service. They have provided a moral compass and direction in troubled times. And they have given Catholics and people of all faiths the tools to live their faiths more completely. People have had longer, healthier, happier, and more meaningful lives as a result of graduating from Catholic universities. And Catholic universities engage the questions that matter most in life in a way that public universities cannot and will not match.

Q What is the value of a liberal arts education?

A

A liberal arts education prepares students to adapt to changes in family circumstances, to the challenges of parenting, to economic upheavals, and to the needs of employers. As lifelong learners, liberally educated people can retool and retrain as the world around them changes. Whether a QU student selects a liberal arts major or a professional major, we will always make certain that each QU student receives a liberal education. At QU, we put a particular emphasis on the liberal arts that deal with life’s meaning and the fundamental questions with which all humans struggle. We also are interested in the moral and spiritual development of each person in a way that other universities cannot match.

A

While we all love the beautiful, nineteenthcentury architecture of Francis Hall, I also think our “mid-century modern” structures, which were built between 1950-1970, are a great asset. Those buildings are increasingly being recognized for their clean lines and simple beauty. At QU, our facilities were built to last. I love walking through campus and seeing those structures on our wellmaintained fields and lawns.

Q What goals do you

have for QU for the first few years as president?

A

I have many goals for Quincy University, as do other members of our community. Some of those goals can be realized more quickly than others. All our goals have in common a deep commitment to the success of every individual student. I believe that student success at Quincy University will increasingly be a result of an intentional, integrated series of strategies that help students take responsibility for their learning and overcome the barriers to graduating on time. We want to design programs for our students that maximize their chances to succeed while insisting that they take responsibility for their lives and learning. Serving as QU’s president, as I have said before, is the greatest honor and the greatest opportunity I have ever been given. We will work hard, and we will enjoy our work. I believe our very best days as a community are still to come. As we approach our 160th year, I am excited about what the next 160 years will mean for Quincy University.

McGee was previously provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at the College of Charleston (South Carolina), where he worked for nearly fifteen years. He also served as chief of staff and senior vice president of executive administration, and as a tenured professor and chair of the department of communication. Prior to joining the College of Charleston, McGee was the chair of the School of Communication at Spalding University (Kentucky) and held faculty positions at Texas Tech University and Northeast Louisiana University. He holds a doctorate in communication from The Ohio State University, and his bachelor’s degree and a master's degree in speech communication from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.

YES OR NO? Building a Life on...

EXPERIENCES

by Jen Wingerter ’13

In a final interview before his retirement on June 28, 2019, Phil Conover shares how choosing the right experiences leads to great opportunities.

W

hen you walk into Quincy University's 23rd President Phil Conover's office, you won't find a list of personal goals displayed on the wall. What you will find is a collection of experiences that Conover has built his life on.

“I don’t remember ever setting personal goals,” said Conover. Instead, Conover asks himself what kind of experiences will help him achieve what he wants to do. He reflects on who he is at the moment and asks himself, “What kind of person does it take to do that? What do I need to change to become that person?” He has learned that self-reflection prepares you for great experiences. 12

QUniverse | Fall 2019

“Most great experiences get reduced to what manner of person you are,” said Conover. “Who you are during the endeavor will make it positive or negative.” To make the right yes or no decision, you have to be comfortable in your own skin. Know what you can do, isolate behavior you need to work on, and learn what it means to give your best. Each day may look different. You are a different person every day. Embrace and utilize the energy you're given for the day. In Conover’s opinion, saying yes builds confidence, and gives you the ability to see outside yourself. No’s don’t do that, and they add little value to your life. A strong yes-list builds positive character traits in a person’s life.

Main Feature | QU Conover notes that it’s often the things we say yes to that build good memories. It’s the yes decisions that make the journey great. Conover has observed that people who are bitter and struggle with relevance at the end of their life have a short yes list. He believes that when you build a portfolio of experiences, opportunities will come to you. Conover admits:

“You know, it was never a goal of mine to be a university president. I didn’t know what I was going to be doing when I said yes here. I didn’t know for sure how I could help, but I knew I had to try.” He learned early to embrace the unknown. Fear holds you back and causes you to miss opportunities to influence, to help others, and develop new skills. Rather, go into each opportunity accepting it on the terms that are there and see what you can do. There is no harm in acknowledging that you might not know how to do something. We all have limitations. Don’t let that hold you back. Have the courage to say yes, and act on it. Conover's leadership at QU turned the university around. He took the lessons he learned from his previous experiences and moved the university through one of it's most difficult challenges. He built a strong team that believes in the messaging going out from the university. Watching QU evolve has made this a fulfilling experience for Conover.

UNDER Conover's Watch, QU... Increased new student enrollment by 11% in 2018

Partnered with Saint Louis University School of Medicine for Pre-Medical Scholars Program

“I tell our students they have the opportunity to build a great memory library. Making good 'yes' decisions isn’t just about satisfying a standard. It's about the kind of person you want to be when you’re 55, 65, or 75.” Conover challenges alumni with the same message. At each turn, milestone, or decision recognize the opportunity in front of you as an experience to add to your memory library. It is also important to look back and appreciate the experiences that helped shape you. “I contend that at any given moment we are the summation of our past experiences,” said Conover. “If QU was an important experience for you, revisit that. Come together, value, and support it.” In Conover’s mind, he doesn’t think he would have become president of QU if he had a long list of no’s. It was the experiences he took throughout his life that built up to this opportunity.

“If you want to leave your mark on this earth, leave it on the basis of good memories. Say yes to the experiences that will make a positive difference.” Conover assumed the role of President Emeritus on July 1, 2019. This status is reserved to honor a university president who is retiring or has retired and has provided outstanding and distinguished service to the university.

FIVE HOLE. FAST BREAK. SCREENING. by Dylan Schick ’19 ARE YOU FAMILIAR WITH THESE TERMS?

Each are terms that reference a sport you may or may not be familiar with. Quincy University Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Marty Bell announced last year the addition of men’s and women’s lacrosse programs. There are 72 men’s lacrosse programs that compete at the Division II level, seven of which participate in the GLVC. Next year there will be a total of ten GLVC teams, with Quincy being one of the additions. Women’s lacrosse has 119 programs that compete nationally. Last year, five GLVC schools sponsored women’s lacrosse, which is one short of the six needed to meet NCAA sport sponsorship standards. The addition of Quincy and Lindenwood Women's Lacrosse teams will push the conference into sponsoring women’s lacrosse for the first time this upcoming season. Both coaches have been hard at work over the past year, recruiting and building their respective programs to get ready for the inaugural season in 2020. Starting a NCAA Division II sport is no easy task, but both head coaches have hit the ground running.

To see guys from all over the country mesh together and create a team from a single determined mentality will be something quite special for us and the campus. We have a great group of guys ready to take on this task and solidify Quincy lacrosse. —Eric Ruppel, Men's Lacrosse Head Coach The team will see players from Texas, Washington, California and Colorado. Not only will fans see players from all over the U.S., but the 2020 team will feature international players as well, after tapping into talent from Canada. The 2020 schedule will be highly competitive, including national top 20 teams in Indianapolis, Rockhurst and Lindenwood. The first year will require a lot of growth and determination. The women’s team holds a similar makeup; featuring athletes from five different states and two countries.

“Over the past year we have created and sold a vision of what Quincy University Lacrosse can be,” said Men’s Lacrosse Head Coach, Eric Ruppel.

I have a very young and hardworking group this season, and I believe we have laid the groundwork for us to compete in the GLVC, one of the most competitive conferences in the Midwest. —Kathelene Kim, Women's Lacrosse Head Coach “Building a program is not easy. I am excited about what we've built and am looking forward to the 2020 season,” says Kim. This upcoming season will be a year of firsts. The task is big, but the programs are in a good place. Both coaches have uniquely shaped their programs and set their foundations, but they share a few common values and goals: Community. Tradition. Compete. Win.

2015 GLVC Coach of the Year 3 GLVC Championships 6 NCAA Regionals 2017 NCAA World Series QU All-Time Wins Leader Has Coached 5 All-Americans Has Coached 4 Drafted Players

These three things have gone hand-inhand at Quincy University for the last nine years. Since head coach Josh Rabe took over in 2011, the QU Baseball Program has proven to be a powerhouse in the Midwest region, year in and year out. Rabe has led the Hawks to an impressive 309-182 record. Those 309 wins make him the all-time winningest coach in QU history. Many of those are wins to remember, including three GLVC Championship wins and the 2017 NCAA Midwest Regional Championship win that sent the team to the Division II College World Series. However, the most recent one that sticks out happened on Saturday, March 16, in Springfield, Missouri. The Hawks defeated the Drury Panthers 10-2 to give Rabe his 289th win and put him at the top of the list. Three weeks later, the Hawks defeated the Missouri S&T Miners 1-0 at QU Stadium to give Rabe his 300th win.

VC C O GL A

“I was hoping that no one would notice that we passed Coach Pat Atwell and surpassed the 300-win mark,” said Rabe. “I have been surrounded by good players and good people during my nine years at Quincy. I am just happy that all those players chose Quincy and let us be a part of their lives.” Rabe is entering his 10th season at the helm, with new challenges and experiences to anticipate. The program graduated a highly decorated senior class in 2019, but still, have a lot of experience returning to the field. Nolan Snyder, Michael Nielsen, and Riley Martin are a few key players who have been with the program for at least three years and are returning for their senior season. That experience, combined with upcoming talent puts QU baseball in a great position to face new challenges head-on in 2020 and continue the winning tradition. QUniverse | Fall 2019

A Lasting Devotion The Early Beginnings QU History of the In the early beginnings of Christianity, Stations of the Cross Christian pilgrims would journey to Jerusalem to walk in the footsteps of Christ's passion on the road to Calvary. This early Christian devotion enabled one to enter into and to grasp the suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus by meditating on the Stations of the Cross. In the 13th century, the Franciscans were granted custody of the Christian sites in Jerusalem by the Pope. It was then that the Stations of the Cross, as a popular devotion, began to spread throughout Europe. Even today the Stations of the Cross are a significant devotion in the Catholic Church.

The 14 Traditional Stations There are 14 traditional stations: Pilate condemns Christ to death; Jesus carries the cross; the first fall; Jesus meets His Blessed Mother; Simon of Cyrene helps to carry the cross; Veronica wipes the face of Jesus; the second fall; Jesus speaks to the women of Jerusalem; the third fall; Jesus is stripped of His garments; Jesus is nailed to the cross; Jesus dies on the cross; Jesus is taken down from the cross; and Jesus is laid in the tomb.

A number of years ago, an Eagle Scout decided his project would be the creation of the Stations of the Cross for the courtyard. He envisioned it as a space to be used by the various retreat groups. He created the Stations of the Cross using wood and plaster of paris. Unfortunately, after a number of years, they deteriorated. “Quincy University and the Franciscan Retreat Center are blessed to have the Stations resurrected again in the North Campus courtyard. The Stations of the Cross are a significant devotion for each of the following Retreat Programs - Cursillo, Emmaus, TEC (Teenagers Encounter Christ), and Quest,” said Fr. John Doctor, OFM.

Donors Make it Happen On a campus visit in the summer of 2016, the 2019 Bill O’Donnell Distinguished Alumni Award recipients, Jim ’59 and Judy ’61 (Perko) Heinze, noticed the condition of the original Stations had fallen into disrepair.

“We felt the atmosphere of the spiritual garden deserved a replacement of a longer lasting construction,” said Heinze. Working with Julie Bell, vice president for advancement, and Matt Bergman, director of community relations and alumni services, they arrived at a beautiful set of granite pedestals set in concrete. In providing for these new Stations of the Cross, Jim and Judy have dedicated them to all the Franciscan Fathers who have spiritually inspired and academically prepared so many Quincy University students for so many years.

The Walkway The walkway around the Stations of the Cross was originally a gravel path. Quincy Cursillo donated the funds in memory of Joe and Sheryl Geisler for a concrete walkway through the courtyard. A wonderful addition to the Stations, the concrete walkway is easy to navigate and adds to the beauty of the courtyard.

The Stations of the Cross stimulate the imagination on how Jesus enters into our human experience, makes visible the Father’s ever faithful love, identifies with human suffering and death, and shows how to fall in the loving hands of God. Fr. John Doctor, OFM

For the third year in a row, QU’s Admissions Office toured surrounding area high schools on their Road Show. This past spring, QU visited 24 different high schools in seven days.

Not only is the Road Show a great opportunity to raise awareness, but it’s also a great recruitment tool. The National Alumni Board (NAB) is a proud sponsor for the Road Shows.

“The purpose of the Admissions Road Show is to raise awareness that there is a great option to stay local to attend college and show support for the community,” said Brittany Ellerman '11, director of admissions. “It’s a unique way to connect with high school students on their turf and encourage them to visit our campus in the future.”

“The main reason for the NAB to be involved in supporting the Road Shows is the recognition that recruiting new students and increasing enrollment at QU is the university’s key strategic objective for its long-term viability,” said NAB President Scott Thoele ’80. “This is an area the NAB thought it could make an immediate impact and help the university along the way.”

A typical tour starts off with a general presentation about QU, different majors, and scholarship opportunities. Students are encouraged to fill out a search card to be added to the Admission’s communication flow so QU can maintain a relationship with them. Students receive different swag items and those who fill out a search card are included in a raffle for prizes such as t-shirts, blankets, hats, and more. The tour includes QU representatives from admissions, student financial services, faculty, Blessing-Rieman College of Nursing and Health Sciences, the advancement office, the student body, and the National Alumni Board. “The different representatives provide a one-stop-shop for students who might have questions; it’s a way to connect them with the right contact,” said Ellerman.

QUniverse | Fall 2019

For the past three years, the Road Show has produced an increase in enrollment numbers. In 2017, 450 search cards were filled out, resulting in 18 applied applicants, of those, 14 paid and enrolled. In 2018, 770 search cards were filled out, resulting in 37 applied applicants, of those 21 paid and enrolled. In 2019, 1040 search cards were filled out, resulting in 46 applied applicants, of those 16 and counting, paid and enrolled. “Participating in the Road Shows is a great experience. The enthusiasm of the QU staff at these events shows in the reaction of the prospective high school students. It also demonstrates QU’s commitment to higher education, as QU is the only institution actively visiting local high schools in the manner of the Road Show format,” said Thoele. “QU has a great story to tell and is an affordable option for many high school students.”

Quincy University Graduate Studies office serves as a one-stop-shop for all things pertaining to graduate studies. Sara Deters, coordinator of graduate studies, has served this role since summer 2018, and her main goal is to grow the program and be a resource for graduate students.

Are you looking to advance in your career?

“Before there wasn’t a ‘go to’ place for graduate students if they needed anything on the staff level, including, security, parking passes, immunizations, and general questions,” said Deters. “I want them to know they’re valued and important, and that QU is not just a place you go once a week to take a class.”

Do you want to further your education?

Deters helps students from the moment they apply to the moment they graduate. She serves as a liaison between the faculty, the registrar office, IT office, and the students. Right outside of Deters’ office is the graduate study lounge, that serves as a central hub that graduate students can use to study or sit between classes.

You don’t have to do it alone.

Sara Deters,

graduate studies coordinator, helps navigate the enrollment process and offers support throughout your time at QU. To learn more about QU’s Graduate Program, contact Sara at graduatestudies@quincy.edu or 217-228-5404.

MASTER SUCCESS

QUniverse | Fall 2019

QU’s Master of Science in Education – Counseling (MEC) program is nationally recognized, CACREP accredited and is the closest one within a 90-mile radius. This program targets students who are

seeking a career as a counselor in settings such as community agencies, government, private practice, and elementary, middle or secondary schools; as well as college student personnel work in various studentfocused positions within higher education. “I enjoy the classes and how the professors present information. It has encouraged me to be a self-starter and constantly challenges me to do my best,” said Alyssa Vitale ’18, current MEC student. “It is no surprise that this group of professors were able to get this program accredited. This award-winning program has become something to be truly proud of." QU’s Master of Business Administration is available for both business and nonbusiness backgrounds and online or in-class (or both). The program also has the potential to be complete in one year. Due to a need in the community, the newest concentration in the MBA program is Health Care Administration. Courses focus on health care law, policy, ethical leadership in management and policy, and business sectors in health. There are many paths available in QU’s Master of Science in Education (MSE) program. The program is open for students to receive their MSE and concentrate in reading education, leadership, and curriculum and instructor with or without a bilingual/ESL endorsement. Current teachers who already work in the field can further their education through licensure programs and graduate-credit workshops. Para instructors are also able to get licensing, and their master’s all in one place. Deters and the faculty work together to improve the programs in order to benefit the students. They feel that graduate programs tailored to fit the student's needs is a win for all involved.

A MUSIC T R I P TO REMEMBER Amy Stollberg, director of choirs; Christine Damm, assistant professor of music; Bill Machold, director of bands, and Laura Kammerer, accompanist, chaperoned 25 QU music students on a 10-day study abroad trip to Germany. The group visited Frankfurt, our sister city of Herford, Halle, the birthplace of "Messiah" composer G.F. Handel, Leipzig, the site of the church where composer J.S. Bach finished his career and was buried, and Dresden. They attended a performance of the Mozart opera "Don Giovanni" at the famed Dresden Semperoper opera house, and the QU Chamber Choir, Saxophone Trio, and Clarinet Quartet took part in 3 concert performances during the trip.

QUniverse | Fall 2019

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX One of the highlights of the trip was sharing the stage with the Stadtsingechor Zu Halle (Boys Choir of Halle) ending with a combined performance of Rutter's "The Lord Bless And Keep You" conducted by Mrs. Stollberg.

Quincian and Germany native Mecki Kosin led the trip. The QU Music Department would like to thank the Quincy Sister City Commission and the many people who helped make this trip possible.

Final Lecture by Jen Wingerter ’13

Biallas came to Quincy University to teach in 1973, having completed his bachelor's degree from the University of Notre Dame, and doctorate from the Catholic Institute, in Paris, France. He taught 31 years at QU before retiring full-time from the Division of Theology and Religious Studies in June 2004. Since then he has continued to teach part-time. Biallas has published over 120 articles in several scholarly journals. He and his wife, Martha, have spent much of their life traveling. Biallas has lectured in eight different countries and taught with Martha in Uganda and Lithuania. He presented his final lecture at QU this past April, before he officially retired in May 2019.

Biallas is the only person on the QU faculty to have received all three of the University’s Faculty Awards:

What life lessons shaped your values? A university is a place where I came to start a lifelong love affair with the radiance of life, a place where I came to know that the only real tragedy is to live without passion, without the desire to romp with joy through the length and breadth of the human adventure. I was taught to encounter grace when I stretched my mind to realize my God-given potential, to strive passionately for a world of social justice, and to see all persons as sacraments pointing to the divine. The Chinese Relativity Axiom: "No matter how great your triumphs or how tragic your defeats, approximately one billion Chinese couldn't care less."

2

What principles did you want to instill in your students? Curiosity: A sense of wonder, a sense of awe before the mystery of life. A trusting atmosphere: where students feel free to be themselves while growing into the persons that God calls them to be. A sense of enthusiasm and a feeling of delight for knowledge and wisdom.

Faculty Focus | QU

3

What experiences hinted that teaching was your calling? While still an undergraduate college student I was hired to teach high school mathematics. After a while I found it too repetitious, but I loved being in charge of the classroom. I desired to go on learning for my lifetime, to explore questions of ultimate meaning in an academic setting. My first religious studies courses fascinated me because they presented other people's efforts to determine whether or not something more (Gods, perhaps), exist, and if so what that something more is.

4

What brings you joy?

5

Who influenced your life/career/faith? Thomas Barrosse: A teacher of the Bible, he was a model not only of scholarship but also piety. Walter Capps: He was careful in scholarship, unprejudiced, and passionate about the truth that can be garnered from meditating on the religions in all cultures. Morton Kelsey: He helped me learn how to find my place in the world, how to be rooted, how to believe in visions that startle and inspire, how to dream and how to hope.

Students who are engaged in the mystery of life, with hearts and minds full of wonder and awe, open to learning new things. That moment each semester when I’m explaining something and I realize that a student 'gets it' - and the light shines. The beauty of a peacock’s tail, the wings of a monarch butterfly, a flock of geese flying in V-formation. Father Augustine Tolton Attended St. Francis College (QU) 1878-1879 Pope Francis proclaimed Father Augustine Tolton of Quincy, America's first black priest, “venerable” on Wednesday, June 12, 2019. The venerable designation officially recognizes Tolton as having lived a life of heroic virtue by the Catholic Church, a vital declaration when being considered for sainthood. The Congregation for the Causes of Saints in Rome will now start investigating whether Tolton's intercession resulted in any miraculous healings. If one such miracle can be found to have occurred, Tolton would be declared "blessed," and if a second miracle could be confirmed, he would become a saint.

Tolton began seminary studies in Rome in 1880. He was ordained on April 24, 1886, and assigned to Quincy, where he was installed as pastor of Quincy's St. Joseph Church, a black congregation. After several years Tolton was reassigned to Chicago, where he organized a black parish called St. Monica's. He remained in Chicago until he died of heat stroke at age 43 on July 9, 1897. Tolton was buried in Quincy in the priests' lot at St. Peter's Cemetery.

Tolton was born a slave on April 1, 1854, in Ralls County, Mo., near Monroe City. In 1862, Tolton's mother escaped across the Mississippi River with her three children to the free state of Illinois. They settled in Quincy. Tolton was permitted to enter St. Francis College (Quincy University).

2018-19 HONOR ROLL OF DONORS

Michael ’90 & Kristine (Burkemper) Bickhaus ’89 Co-Chairs of the 2018-19 QU Fund Drive 39

T

he 2018-2019 fiscal year was a defining time for Quincy University. Would the university succumb to the financial headwinds that are facing many private liberal arts universities across the nation, or would QU persevere and thrive? Deeply committed to our nearly 160-year tradition of educating future leaders in the Franciscan tradition, the QU family chose the latter. A l u m n i , f r i e n d s , f a c u l t y, s t a ff , b u s i n e s s e s , a n d foundations rallied and invested nearly $4.7 million in support of this fine institution and the students we serve. Under the leadership of Michael ’90 and Kristine (Burkemper) Bickhaus ’89, we exceeded our increased $1.1M QU Fund goal in tandem with closing our $25 million Forever Forward Capital Campaign. In addition, support of Endowment reached its highest level in more than a decade. While all these accomplishments are a reason to celebrate, investments in QU must continue to increase for the university to remain viable for today’s students and future generations. I f y o u a re a s k i n g y o u r s e l f i f t h e re t u r n o n y o u r investment is worth it, the answer is a resounding YES. We consistently see students transformed by their QU experiences. Your generosity helps students like Allyson Jo Hoener ’20 receive a rich experience both in and out of the classroom. The following is an excerpt from Allyson’s thank you letter to her endowed scholarship donor:

"I am a junior at Quincy University studying elementary education and special education, with an endorsement for middle school science. In my limited free time, I work at the local Quincy YMCA as an after-school counselor, play ultimate Frisbee, lead an interdenominational Bible study group on campus, fundraise for Haiti Connection, and plan with my advisor for an upcoming mission trip to serve children in another country. These missionbased experiences will allow me to share the world with my students and open their eyes to people in need. Since July of last year, when they found a cancerous tumor in my mother’s brain, I have also been focusing on spending time with my family and helping them out as much as I can. After graduation, I plan on pursuing teaching abroad for a few years, God willing." On behalf of Allyson and all of our students, thank you for investing in their QU experiences today and in the years to come—an investment with a tremendous return. With gratitude,

Julie Bell Vice President for University Advancement

Permanent Legacy of Support for Quincy University “Michael and I both attended smaller liberal arts colleges. We really came to value and appreciate that learning environment and the opportunity for personal growth it provides. We are privileged to continue our support of QU and the liberal arts mission.” - Judy (Hinkes) ’83 Zeddies. Q- What is an endowment fund? A - An endowment fund is a permanent, self-sustaining source of funding. An endowment fund holds its principal in perpetuity and only pays about 4 to 5 percent per year, that supports campus operations, scholarships, and programs. Endowments consist of many different funds.

Judy (Hinkes) ’83 and Michael Zeddies, Jr.

Q- What is the Title III Endowment Challenge Grant? A - A grant that encourages eligible institutions to establish or increase institutional endowment funds. Each year of the 5-year lifespan of the grant, QU is able to draw down $50,000 as long as we have the required match of $50,000. This means QU has the potential to grow the endowment by $500,000 in 5 years! Judy and Michael Zeddies’ generous $50,000 match allowed QU to draw down $50,000 from the grant and put $100,000 in the endowment this past fiscal year. QU is currently looking for a matching partner for the current fiscal year. This opportunity doubles every donor dollar. Judy Hinkes Zeddies is a Chicago native. She received a BFA in Fine Arts from Quincy University and an MFA in Printmaking & Drawing from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, IL. She has also studied printmaking at Chicago Printmakers Collaborative and at Ox-Bow in Saugatuck, MI. She is the director of Printmaking and Book Arts at Lillstreet Art Center and teaches printmaking in the Chicago area. ~ Deceased Contact Julie Bell at 217-228-5229 or bellju@quincy.edu to find out how you can double your impact. “Our experience at QU helped to set us on the PATH OF LIFE together. In the liberal arts tradition, many professors influenced our education.” Scott and Nikki agree that their education at QU prepared them for their careers. Not only through the course work offered but through opportunities and professor inspiration. Dr. Wendell Mauter was the first person to tell Scott that he had the ability to attend graduate school. His coursework at QU in political science helped him to develop a breadth of expertise in the field which has helped Scott serve DIVERSE STUDENTS interests as a professor at a community college. “I can honestly say that his advice changed my life,” said Scott. “That is the kind of student-faculty interaction that is possible at a small liberal arts college like QU.” Father Joe Zimmerman’s passion for social justice has inspired Niki to make a difference in the world. He taught that standing up for your beliefs does not mean you have to be the loudest one in the room. Her MBA gave her the business knowledge and understanding to consult with businesses on their HR practices and procedures. It gave her the CONFIDENCE to engage in tough conversations with entrepreneurs about their business practices. Scott and Nikki have two children, Ryan (age 5) and Isabelle (age 2). After residing in the Chicago suburbs for a decade, they moved to Harbor Springs, Michigan in 2015 so Scott could accept a position as Professor of Political Science at North Central Michigan College. “We support QU financially because we know what a POWERFUL IMPACT it had on our lives and we wish that for future generations. We know that both of us benefited from the financial contributions of others through institutional grants and scholarships and we want to return the favor to others.”
