My first sock book was Nancy Bush’s Folk Socks (Interweave Knits, 1994). As a sock novice, I was quickly caught up in the front matter, the alluring ways to turn a heel and taper a toe for a fit as neat as Cinderella’s slipper. The three designs in this little book offer more sock allure. Star Athena’s Seven Layer Cake socks are a sweet riff on Victorian details with lace edging and dainty ties, Michele Wang’s Petit Fours uses a modern, unfussy wrapped eyelet in patterns on cuff and foot, and Cookie A’s Harbor Bar pair works a Fair Isle pattern on right and wrong sides and finishes with an afterthought heel. Many thanks to Cookie A, Michele Wang, and Star Athena for their imaginative designs, all worked in Finch, our classic fingering-weight. It’s wool, of course. The better to keep your feet cozy, dry, comfy, and pretty. pam
