Calgary Queer Arts Society acknowledges that we operate on the ancestral territories of the people of the Treaty 7 region of Southern Alberta. Treaty 7 is the last of the numbered Treaties made between the Government of Canada and the Plains First Nations. Treaty 7 was signed on the 22nd of September 1877 by five of Turtle Island's First Nations including the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprised of the Siksika, Piikani and Kainai First Nations), The Tsuu'tina First Nation and the Stoney Nakoda (including the Chiniki, Bearspaw and Wesley First Nations). Calgary, originally known as Mokhinstis is also home to the Metis Nation of Alberta Region III. We acknowledge and celebrate all nations, genders and spirits who work, live and play on this territory and commit to continuing the work of Truth and Reconciliation for the dignity and equity of all.
Fairy Tales Queer Film Festival is the longest running Queer film festival in Canada, and a premiere event for queer culture in Alberta.
For 25 years, since 1998, Fairy Tales Queer Film Festival has been bringing uniquely queer stories to the screen for audiences in and around Calgary. More than 1000 movies shown, all made by, written, acted in, shot by and produced by queer artists from around the globe. This unwavering commitment to showcase and support queer artists translates into a loyal and growing audience base who thirst to see themselves and their stories represented in film. Representation matters, encourages and saves.
2023 marks our 25th festival. Looking back at how far we ' ve come and looking forward to all the places we have yet to go The 2023 festival will showcase over 40 films from documentaries, features, short films, animations plus panels, workshops and performances by local 2SLGBTQIA+ artists. Calgary Queer Arts Society is a non-profit, charitable organization located Alberta that celebrates Queer culture and artists through story-telling.
We are passionate about bringing new experiences to Albertans, and our vision is to promote diversity, inclusion, and community-building. In addition to our annual film festival, we provide year-round programming through ally-ship education (OUTReels), youth mentorship (Youth Queer Media Program), and The Coming Out Monologues, YYC. The Fairy Tales Queer Film Festival remains our largest program and is the heart of our organization!
