The project is located in Cumbria, it explores ways in which we can tackle current issues such as food disconnect, food crisis, health and unemployment; as identified as a foundation of requirements to help society build. When researching Cumbria’s history in farming and initial agriculture - monasteries played in big role in turning farming into an industry whilst at the same time improving the quality of the land to grow on. I took this information and did a dive into monastic architecture and how the Cistercian Architectural elements were the crux to the monastatic living. My project then taking the monastic ethos and proposing a research centre for vertical farming - The researchers live and work together, this being the driving force of the how the research is carried out as it creates a connection between people in a space that is designed to create a sense of focus.

This project presented the challenge of working with an existing building. Due to Grimsbys rich history in the fishing industry and connection to the North Sea, with location and offshore workers I decided to design a Research Centre for Oceanographic studies. For me this felt like the right direction to go in as Grimsby hadn’t yet had a space that displayed the importance of its relationship with the North sea that was also available to the public to engage in. This space designed in hopes it would educate the locals and create a community that is submerged in what’s happening in the North sea and bring a sense of pride to the locals. When analysing the design of the existing building , I decided the majority of the overall structure of the building could be saved though I slightly changed structure to help with the movement through the building. The façade of the building is where I changed the existing design, this was challenging as I wanted to keep most of the façade glass to bring in natural light but this brought the challenge of overheating, I tackled this with using an automatic louvres system and a sedum roof.

Findings from the North sea brought to Laboratory and then sent to research and documentary rooms.
Lessons and lectures held on oceanogrophic studies ; Available to public through application process.
Public library focused on oceanogrpahic material available to public.
Exhibitons held on recent findings and public works focused on oceanographic studies.
Conferences held on findings and incorporated into teaching and gallery displays. Shared with the general public; increasing knowledge.
Creating a space to target specific issues that might need to be addressed and deep dive into.
Increased understanding on health of the ocean and understaning the North Sea.

When designing the cafe the main concept was to create a continuous space of the physical design and site flow which had complete freedom when walking around. This mimicking the vegetation in ways of letting it grow in complete freedom As the space is surrounded heavily with vegetation this will in a few years grow to completely cover the whole space and eventually growing onto the King Richard III Centre and the buildings around it, this merging the two buildings together in the most natural way possible. Another focus was the cafe space to be aligned with the King Richard centre, not in a way where the two buildings look alike and the existing elements are used but in a way where the space visually transforms you to a new location. However, the technical design would not be possible if the layout of the King Richard Centre wasn’t as is, so they exist with eachother fitting like a puzzle whilst utilising the space. The café is designed forall users whilst the amphitheatre is more suitable for youths.

River Soar Rose Market is a combination of stalls and workshops that give the visitors a chance to buy and engage in the production, it helps them understand where their product comes from and what the product can do. The space is designed with wood, concrete and glass. The timber creates an earthy atmosphere to the space, complimenting the roses and making it visually natural the design also shows off the way in which timber can be utilised. The raw concrete contrasts this but shows a strong solid structure. The market is designed in a way that shows the production and the stages of making oils and potpourri with fresh roses, the design mimics stages. Roses are grown and taken care of on site whilst also being transported to the market. The buying and making is separated on the site. In the first building the visitors can only buy the fresh roses, potpourri and oils at the stalls. In the second building which is attached to the bridge is where the visitors can make their own potpourri and oils. The beacon of the design is the roof of the second building that represents rose petals, it also express stages in the whole market. The market is an area for all age groups and is a family friendly activity space.
This Micro-House is designed with light and privacy being the main elements of inspiration. The home is designed in a way that lets the inhabitant control the light and privacy to their preference, giving them control of the design. The designs main features are the adjustable louvres that extend outside of the glass box design this allows the inhabitant to control the level of light, ventilation and privacy whilst also being able to create new spaces; outdoor spaces such as a front garden area.
Your Art Garden is located close to the Berlin Wall memorial although the location carries alot of history, it is also surrounded by a large area of vegetation. Berlin is a city that invites art and creativity, from this I took the opportunity to create a space where art and vegetation merge. Your Art Garden is a Hydroponic farm that grows plants which then are made into paints from the pigments and used in the art studios. Your Art Garden also has a botanical garden which carries an intimate collection of tropical plants. The design is a lightweight steel structure that is completed with transparent floors and a water collection system which is used to water to hydroponic plants. The design invites the existing su rounding of the vegetation whilst also respecting berlins love for the arts.
