This piece was written for Ryan Taylor and developed in collaboration with him. This solo work aims to highlight both Ryan's skill as a saxophonist and showcase the different aspects of the instrument. The piece features many short recurring sections, each with their own distinct character and expressive content, covering aspects of jazz influenced harmonic material to use of Haydn's Cipher as presented in Biographische Skizze (Rettensteiner, 1808). Originally conceived for alto-saxophone, the piece was re-imagined for bari sax in cooperation with Ryan.

“DreamSequence”isapieceintwoshortmovementswrittenforsolopiano Thetwo movementsofthepiece,eachlastingaroundthirtysecondsinlength,arebasedon twovividsurrealimagesfromacrypticdreamthatIexperiencedonenight.The lengthofeachmovementcorrespondswiththefleetingimagesexperiencedwithina dream.Thefirstmovement,titled“ConjoinedCattle”,isdarkinnature,featuring sprawlingbassostinatosagainstrhythmicallyoffsetpolymodalmaterialinthehigher rangeofthepiano ThismovementisbasedonthefirstvisionIexperiencedwithinthe dream.Iwitnessedagrotesqueimageoftwolankycowsinapaddockwhiledriving alongmyroad.Oneofthecowsappearedtobestandingontopoftheother,though thefeetofthiscowwereconjoinedtothebackofthecowunderneathit.Bothcows hadextremelyelongatednecks,thoughtheneckofthecowontopwaslongerthan thatofthecowonthebottom,andnaturallytheweightofthecowontopwouldnot besupportedbythatofthecowonthebottom,althoughinthedreamthiswasnot thecase.Thesecondmovement,titled“LargeBlackSheep”,isbasedonthesecond visionofthedream.Withinthisvision,Iwitnessedmultiplelargeblacksheeptowering overthecarlikeasetofarchesorskyscrapersasIdroveunderneaththem Whilethis isanextraordinaryimageandexperience,Idrovepastthesheepasifthiswasnotout oftheordinary.Thismovementfeaturesasetofchordsbasedonquartalstacks,or quartalharmony,torepresentthegiganticstatureofthesheepandtheextremely surrealimageryofthedream.

“DedicatedtoRemiRaymond“CoupDeFoudre”isaFrenchphrase, whichdirectlytranslatesto“ClapofThunder”,butisused colloquiallymostoftenasanidiomdenotingloveatfirstsight.My pianoquartetisinspiredbythispassionateanddramaticword imagerywhichjuxtaposesathunderstormwithlove.Itcomprisesof abackandforthoftwodistinctmelodicideas,fosteredby satisfyingandindulgentlyromanticaccompanimentlines.The musicinterruptsitselfwithanunconventionalTango,featuringa pianosoloandimprovisationindirectinspirationoftheplaying styleofRemiRaymond,towhomthepieceisdedicatedandwill alsobepremieringthepiecetoday.

NOSTALGIA byShelbyDevenish “NostalgiainA'isthefirstofthree minimalistinspiredpianoworksI've composedthatfocusoncapturing differentinterpretationsofnostalgia. “CrystalWaterisamethodofmeditation,ofrattlingthecageof Ego.Egoisaconceptintegraltothehumanconditionand importanttomentalhealth.Yetegoisrestrictinginitsinherent boundednesstotheindividualandit'srelianceoncause effect tocoheretheworld.Itisanexistentialcagefromwhichwe observeasimulationoftheuniverse.Achievingmomentsof relieffromegoisintegraltopersonal,spiritualandacademic pursuitsalike.SuspensionofegoledNewtontopositamystical forceholdingthecosmostogether,andhisownegocould neverreconcilethatnotionwetakeforgrantedasgravity.This pieceexploresapossiblemethodofgroupreflectionand suspensionofego,theglasssoundingbyforcesultimately beyondwhatthemindcaninfluenceorreconcile.
