ETUDE FOR PIANO NO. 1 IN AB MINOR MARCUS VAUGHN PIANO: MARCUS VAUGHN

THIS ETUDE BEGAN AS A SIMPLE “PRACTICALLY WRITTEN” PIECE: I SAT DOWN AT MY PIANO AND BEGAN TO PLAY, WRITING IDEAS DOWN AS I DID. IT WAS LITTLE MORE THAN A SOMEWHAT MUSICALLY COHESIVE COLLECTION OF ARPEGGIOS AND SCALES. HOWEVER, OVER THE MONTHS SINCE I WROTE IT IN LATE 2020, IT HAS BECOME SO MUCH MORE. AN EXERCISE, A MEDITATION, A FAREWELL… AND PERHAPS MORE. WHETHER YOU HEAR IN THE PIECE THOSE THINGS AS WELL, OR SOMETHING ELSE, OR SIMPLY AS THE COLLECTION OF ARPEGGIOS AND SCALES IT STARTED OUT AS, I HOPE YOU ENJOY IT.

WE ALL KNOW THE BASSOON IS A CRY FOR HELP, BUT LET’S TAKE A CLOSER LOOK INTO WHAT MAKES IT SUCH A SILLY INSTRUMENT. THIS PIECE EXPLORES THE FULL RANGE AND VARIOUS TIMBRAL QUALITIES OF THE BASSOON, WITH LIVE AUDIO MANIPULATION TO CREATE A RICH, SONIC, ATMOSPHERE DERIVED ENTIRELY FROM THE SOUNDS OF THE INSTRUMENT. BUT MOSTLY IT’S JUST ABOUT HOW BASSOON IS SO SO SILLY, HEHE!

EXPLORING THE WAXING AND WANING AND UNSTOPPABLE PROGRESS OF TIME, AND THE TOLES THIS TAKES ON A LIFE, AS WELL AS THE TRIUMPHS IT EMPOWERS. ALSO, A TREE GROWING WITH THE SEASONS. THIS PIECE IS A CONTINUOUS STRING OF SIMPLE ARPEGGIOS, EMBELLISHED WITH SIMPLE COUNTER RHYTHMS THAT TUG FOR ONE'S ATTENTION. FOCUSING ON THE SWEET UPPER REGISTERS OF THE PIANO BECAUSE I LIKE IT

COLOURS ON WOOD IS A FUN AND PLAYFUL PIECE, WRITTEN FOR TWO MARIMBAS. BEGINNING WITH A DRONE ON MIDDLE C, COLOURS ON WOOD GRADUALLY BUILDS INTO A COLOURFUL MIX OF CHORDS AND RHYTHMS. THE USE OF MINIMALISM AND MANIPULATION OF CHORDS AND CLOSE POSITION HARMONIES, CAUSES THE PIECE TO APPEAR SEAMLESS, TRANSITIONING INTO EACH SECTION WITHOUT WARNING.


THE CALLING OF ST MATTHEWS ZACHARY MIEZIO PIANO: LING LU

INSPIRED BY THE SCRIPTURE FOLLOWING MATTHEW THE TAX COLLECTOR WHO IS ASKED BY JESUS TO BECOME ONE OF HIS APOSTLES. JESUS SAW A MAN NAMED MATTHEW SITTING AT THE TAX COLLECTOR’S BOOTH. “FOLLOW ME,” HE TOLD HIM, AND MATTHEW GOT UP AND FOLLOWED HIM (MATTHEW 9:9-13) THE MUSIC FOCUSSES ON A MOMENT BEFORE MATTHEW FOLLOWS JESUS. A PROFOUND MOMENT OF HESITATION, QUESTIONING, AND DOUBT COMPOUNDS MATTHEWS MIND. A TRUE SYMBOLISM OF THE PARALLAX OF DECISIONS WE ALL FACE AND THE FAITH WE MUST PUT IN OTHERS TO SUCCEED.
